An indie graphic adventure / visual novel game in the style of PC-98 titles. Players take on the role of a ship's security officer in deep space near Jupiter as a deadly mystery threatens the entire crew.

Storyline

Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog takes place in a vintage anime and sci-fi inspired retro future. Players take control of a security officer transferred to the Jovian warship 'The Gun-Dog' as it heads into deep space to investigate reports of mysterious signals. As things begin to unravel on the Gun-Dog the player has to navigate the slow breakdown of the crew and do their best to uncover the mystery of the threat from deep space before it is too late.

If you love retro ADVs, Mecha anime, beatiful sprites, good world building and a banger soundtrack. This the game for you. I can't wait to see what Space Colony has in store for their next entry into the anthology!

This is, without a doubt, one of my absolute favorite games I've played in a very long time!

It's a fantastic blend of old-school point-and-click gameplay with a more standard visual novel format, that features gorgeous artwork, a solid soundtrack, and a really lovable cast of characters (except for Vanessa, ♥♥♥♥ you). And of course, the story is peak cinema! While I have very minor issues with some parts, overall I really enjoyed reading and being immersed in the plot. The ending is really interesting, and I love weird plots like this. Sometimes, it felt like watching Gunbuster for the first time again.

The one and only issue I have, is the fact that there are a good handful of spelling/grammar issues, and the punctuation is super inconsistent. They're not major by any means, but I'm the kinda person that reads these aloud and I struggle to stay focused if a handful of lines throw me off.

Don't let that ultimately minor fault dissuade you, however. This is so worth your time, and I hope that we get a sequel with more answers eventually! And also, if you choose to play as a male, you're playing it wrong.

Sol: The Gun-Dog is exactly as it describes itself, a retro Sci-Fi visual/graphic novel. All characters are very unique and enjoyable (Well besides Vanessa anyways)
The story leaves a lot questions at the end, becoming more interested on who exactly is Cassandra and what’s exactly is out within their galaxy. My only con with this game is that the story itself feels short, like there’s still a lot that we don’t understand and no clear answers.

I would hope to imagine the game is getting a sequel to help fill in a lot mysteries, because it definitely can’t end like this.

I initially got this game because I saw the character art and thought, "Hey, a waifus in space game, neat" and started playing it, only to realize it had a fairly interesting scientific grounding that played with its premise, which made me start paying attention. In most visual novels, I skip scenes or walls of text to get to the parts I'm more interested in, or the ones that have characters that I care more about. In Gun-Dog, every character proved to be interesting. Save for one particular Lieutenant. Every character is immediately presented in a way that best helps you understand who they are, and while they stick to their characterization, they prove to have more layers of depth and complexity that made me feel invested. Soon, I wasn't reading and clicking to progress the story, I was reading to see how the characters I was invested in reacted to various situations and growing conflict aboard the Gun-Dog. The game feels tense, the limited control and decisions force you to rely on context and understanding of the characters around you in order to get through situations. I wound up getting what appears to be the best ending, and ending that was still fairly depressing, but ultimately rewarded me for every decision that I made over the course of the game.

However, there are negatives. For a story that opens with ready access to explanations and context for the setting, with more lore sprinkled throughout, with so much logic used and teased in the story that I felt rewarded for thinking about problems with unclear answers... this caused the [spoiler]antagonists[/spoiler] to feel overwhelming. [spoiler]With technology that feels thousands of years more advanced than ours, with every encounter feeling like a hopeless battle of attrition, having no answers towards what they were, what they are, or even giving a name to refer to them by beyond antagonists makes them feel overwhelming, and overly favored by the story to the point I fully expect any follow-up to Gun-Dog to feature narrative convenience on to how the antagonists can possibly be opposed, or defeated, as even in Gun-Dog they seem to be unbeatable until the story decides that we can suddenly damage one.[/spoiler] But ultimately, this game is set in Stories From Sol, the first game of its series, and it tells you in the title that this is about the story of the Gun-Dog, and not about anything beyond that. You get a taste of the story outside of the Gun-Dog, but the majority of the game is about the experiences aboard the Gun-Dog itself on a particular mission, and its crew.

Despite my complaints, this is still a 9/10 experience, a must for science fiction visual novel enjoyers, well worth the full price, and I fully intend to buy the next story from Sol when it comes out, as I need to find out what comes next.

It was pretty good. Some of the escape scenarios are a bit tedious where you know what to do but telling the game that is a bit contrived. Interesting script on the game, I enjoyed it.
