I remember the day when the vanilla "remaster" released, and as somebody who received this game for his 4th birthday back in 2011, I was certainly not impressed. The excessive amount of bloom is an eyesore and ruins the beautiful stages (which is still in the vanilla "remaster").
The initial release of the vanilla "remaster" (And it's current state) left a taste so poor in my mouth that I opted to play the game on ORIGINAL HARDWARE, nope, not emulation -- ORIGINAL HARDWARE. (mainly for nostalgia's sake if I'm being real)
So no, this is not a positive review towards the developers or SEGA. This is another case of "Sonic Fans will do what SEGA won't"
Besides that, with the re-rainbow installed, I am happy to play this game natively and I recommend this game to anyone who's looking to get into Sonic.

Too many invisible walls and forced boosts make you feel robbed of the ability to basic things at every step. The basic movement feels horrible (especially the jump) and the homing attack is the same input as the double jump which can easily create situations where you want to perform one action (maybe grabbing one of the special collectible you require to 100% the game) and the game sends you flying away and an invisible wall keeps you from going back for the item you missed.

Owned Sonic Colours on the Wii many years back, and I'm enjoying it even more now than I did back then. I get that many people dislike this port, but for me, I really enjoy the mechanics, and I'm happy I'm not blinded by nostalgia (and that I didn't play the game in so long) otherwise I wouldn't have enjoyed how fun this game is.

El colors como tal tiene un diseño de nivel muy malo con algunos niveles que duran apenas segundos y que no tienen mucha cosa en ellos, y las cinematicas tienen un humor muy infantil que hacen ver a sonic medio como un bufon. Como remaster es horrible, tiene bugs, filtro brilloso todo feo y encima crasheos a cada rato (o almenos en mi caso), si quieren probar el juego mejor emulense la version de la wii que se ve mas bonita y no esta tan bugueada

The TRUE start of Sonic's downfall reducing him from a Shonen hero to an annoying Saturday Morning cartoon hero throwing every cringy one liner under the sun starring in perhaps the most dirivitive and mid game in the series that's still tons of fun to go through even if it lacks the depth, charm and challenge of Unleashed and less so Generations.
Oh, and the remaster is a buggy mess that got better with time. Even with all that being said, it's still recommended as it's still a fun game to go through. Just be prepared to cringe at the terrible written dialogue writen by guys who admitted that they didn't know a thing about Sonic and all of their knowledge of Sonic came from a Wiki lol

I really like this game, yeah I heard bad things at launch of this remaster and as in-complete re-rainbow mod is. It gets the job done! I highly suggest picking this up with the mod, it's in a better condition than how it was at launch.
Regardless, this game really brought the kid in me. I don't know if it's nostalgia but growing up, I always wanted to play this game but could never get access to it. Now, I can! I love the level designs, I love the atmosphere and especially the OSTs. "Speak with your heart" is honestly my personal favorite.
Something about that OST made me remind of my kid self, my desires, etc. It's funny, I get people disliked the story of this game but to me, I think the story got the job done. It was never meant to be a grand scheme of cinema when it comes to narrative. It tried to be its' own thing and I appreciate it. And maybe the lyrics hit hard for me but it made me cry, not a lot of games can do that but I thank for this game for doing something like that. If my kid self can see himself not only follow his dreams, but also playing the games he always wanted to play growing up. He'll be smiling.

Наконец-то дорвался до этой противоречивой игры в серии Соника! Что могу сказать?
1) Игра классная, действительно классная! Фанаты Соника заценят, НО... По меркам не фана серии, а обычного игрока она - средняя. Это раннер и платформер в духе всей серии и не более того. Да, она милая, да она прикольная, , да геймплей местами прикольный, но своих денег она вообще НЕ стоит. Обычному игроку если и брать - то по очень большой скидке. И да, все по канону - первые уровни и боссы простенькие, а последние 2 уровня и босс - дадут слегка прикурить. Но ничего сверх сложного.
2) Игра идеально подойдет детям 11-12+ лет. Взрослому и незнакомому с серией игроку, брать ее смысла нет.
3) Не знаю как на момент выхода, но сейчас, когда я ее прошел, я не встретил ни багов, ни вылетов, ни глюков, что однозначно +.
Как знаток и любитель серии - 7 из 10.
Как обычный игрок - 6 из 10.
Лучшее что было с Соником на данный момент это:
Ориджинс, Мания, Суперстарс, Эдвенчур 1, 2 (Фронтирс пока не играл, не могу сказать ничего). Все остальное - да, двигает лор и сюжет, но в целом, очень опционально.

sonic colors as its self is an ok game, but ultimate is so horrible bro i swear. the game has so many bugs and glitches (im sure you know),
and one time my game completely froze and i couldnt force close it with alt f4 or the task manager or anything. i had to then restart my pc entirely.
also as sonic colors in itself its not really the greatest. took me only about 4 hours to beat on my first playthrough and the writing is pretty bad. gameplay is fun though i guess

If you just want to play through it casually its not the worst thing in the world but for anything else i cannot stress on how stupid some of the mechanics are from random brief lag spikes that somehow flip sonic to dumb decisions by who made this game like the restart button I cannot tell you the amount of times I accidently hit restart and since it does not ask if your sure you just get put back at the beginning and for someone doing the egg shuttle be very careful cause for some inane reason if you hit restart even by accident your going straight back to level freaking one also if you bump your mouse slightly when pausing after using the controller the mouse will be at the middle of the screen and it will hover over restart even if you left it on resume and since you left it on resume you assume that you can just press A NOPE you just get restarted now as for other mechanics the lightning power up is really annoying to aim exactly where you want it which isnt usually a problem but theres this one red ring in aquarium park and the only one place in the game where i can remember having to aim the lighting power up so perfectly a lot of the acts in the same world you will just be running past the same part of the world on different levels which really does not add much variety I somehow hated trying to 100 percent this more than Sonic Forces The Rival rush was way too hard in some cases and in some cases that's okay but sometimes metal sonic would just straight up outrun me somehow getting S-ranks for some levels was really hard since the way they do scoring in this game isn't really good and I stopped at the long haul achievement which was the last one for me cause i got to the 43rd mission and the restart issue happened and I hit restart which put me back to level 1 and a alt 4 press later uninstalled because I'm not spending any more time on this maybe one day ill go back and spend another 2 hours but for now I'm done like I said at the beginning if your just doing it casually it isn't the worst thing in the world but I think this game is heavily carried by nostalgia because I actually believe they have made this game worse then the original one

I mean it's a fine harmless way to play Sonic Colors. Nothing terrible, but nothing amazing. Just servicable. Not Origins level offensive. So I'll give it a positive by default because Sonic Colors is a good game and it wasn't ruined in my experience, except the bumpers aren't sidestep buttons??? Dude okay that blows.

I liked this game a lot as a kid, and there's still a lot of good here; but man the level design is NOT what i remember it to be at all... it was good for the time, but after gens and shadow gens, this game just pales in comparison completely. the 2d level design is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad on this game its insane. id rather play forces tbh.
Segundo platino para un juego de Sonic, la verdad es que disfruté de este título de completarlo al 100% a pesar del mal diseño de algunos niveles pero dentro de todo eso la mejora de las mecánicas y corrección de bugs hace que este juego valga la pena. La personalización para Sonic es de la mejor que he visto con los guantes, zapatos, aura y turbo hay una variedad increíble, me saca tremenda alegría de disfrutar de este juego que quería jugar hace mucho 10/10.
Un gran juego, me encanta el gamplay y el soundtrack, de las pocas cosas malas deben ser lo bosses que son demasiado fáciles y repetitivos excepto el final boss.
Una pena que para poder poder jugarlo correctamente tengas que si o si descargar un mod que pesa más de 21gbs.

I was already not a fan of Sonic Colours, the game's level design is really poor, the writing is really corny (not in the good kind like with the Sonic Boom TV show) and the boss fights are really bad. The original game's only saving grace was the soundtrack.
Now let us take that and make it incredibly worse. This "remaster" is so buggy, even after the patch updates I had encountered so many visual and gameplay glitches in the levels and boss fights. The new music remixes basically assassinated the original game's main saving grace, so this can't even meet the "at least the soundtrack is good" compliment anymore (I'm aware you can change it to the original, but I'm reviewing this remaster by its original intentions). The new visuals are such a joke, the bloom is crazy and so many of the models look worse with the new lighting, it hurt my eyes every now and then.
To think this was even approved at all is crazy, this is not even a case of Sonic Adventure DX or Sonic Origins where if you haven't played the original then its fine, I genuinely believe you would be better off buying a Wii and the original game instead. The only saving grace of this game is that it is probably one of the reasons why the Sonic Generations remaster is actually good.
Don't spend your time or money on this.

This port is honestly not great. Sonic Colours is still a great game with a gimmick that never gets old, but the remaster is riddled with bugs, and just overall very odd design choices. The 'colours' feel washed and the updated soundtrack is a sidegrade at best, and just a straight up downgrade at worst, but thankfully you can just opt to use the original soundtrack, which is vibrant and fun throughout. Buy with caution, as mods can make this game feel impeccable, but I can't in good faith, recommend a game that requires mods to feel worth its hefty price tag. Buy it on sale if you must.

Casi nunca en mi infancia llegue a jugar muchos juegos de Sonic.
Este juego me parecio bastante bueno, (para ser mas claro 7/10) las cinematicas del juego me parecen entretenidas, sobre todo los comentarios que hacen Sonic y Tails, el gameplay pues lo tipico pero la adicion de los Wisps y sus mecanicas me parecen creativas, (mi favorito es el Laser) la batalla final me gusto aunque pudo ser mejor, la historia no es destacable pero no esta nada mal y el uso libre de Super Sonic en cada nivel de historia y su metodo de desbloqueo me parecieron muy buenos.
Por cierto es relativamente facil de platinar, ya que la mayoria de logros los consegui sin querer y solo las esmeraldas y uno que otro logro son los que no habia conseguido luego de terminarme la historia.

I'm reviewing this with the Re-Rainbow mod installed for the whole playthrough. I just 100% completed this game. Sonic Colors is a game i remember very fondly from the Wii era and at the time was one of my favorite games. Assuming you are using the Aforementioned mod it still holds up very well. If you plan to buy this game only do it if you intend to get the mod. It is very simple to get anyway so you might as well. The game also goes on sale very often and i got it for 12 bucks. I'd say not too bad. The gameplay is very fluid, There are a lot of levels, Some better than others, But mostly good all around. The 100% is also smooth to go for, You don't really have to go out of your way for anything asides from completing the egg shuttle. As long as you get all the Red Star Rings and S ranks you are totally good. The only real issue with this game that was also kind of an issue back in the Wii era is the dialogue in the cutscenes. It's very obviously written for children with Sonic and Tails making really corny jokes every time there's a cutscene. But if you can get past that (Which you can if you just skip them) this game is very good and i recommend strongly. BUT DOWNLOAD RE-RAINBOW ITS VERY IMPORTANT

It hurts to say but I really can't recommend buying this release, unless you're ready to spend time modding it. This game holds a special place in my heart, since Sonic Colors was the first game of the franchise I played as a kid; while it was very nostalgic and euphoric to play through it again, there are plenty of shortcomings in this entry that should be mentioned.
Sonic Colors is inconsistent in it's gameplay. Some levels you go fast, some, not so much. There are a vast amount of levels that are reminiscent of a more generic platformer than anything Sonic. For me personally this wasn't a problem, but I can see why that would turn people off. The Wisps this game introduces are unique and fun for the most part, but this is something the Sonic Community is fairly split on. Either you hate them, or you don't. Again, I consider myself part of the latter.
I would've recommended people to try this game if it wasn't for the frequent crashes this remaster has. Paired with Low-Res Cutscenes, Sub-par performance and a very short playtime, this game is not worth the current price tag unfortunately.
Beneath all the rubble of the terrible remaster there is a solid game, which back then was considered to be somewhat of a return to form for the Sonic Series. If you're a fan of 3D Sonic or want to revisit this game, get it at a hefty sale, and be ready to invest an hour into fixing the game if you're looking for the optimal experience.

a classic 2D Sonic game in 3D form, with a harmless villain.
I played Sonic Racing Cross Worlds and liked it, decided to try another recent Sonic game. Here it is.
I didn't play many Sonic games when I was young, but I've always had this opinion: a Sonic game mostly plays itself. That remains true for this game.
What you can do is quite limited. Movement control, if you can call it that, mostly involves just the A and D keys to move forward or change lanes. Occasionally you need to press Space to jump or hit rocks, and X key for special powers mainly to clear obstacles or rise up to higher platforms. While playing, I often don't need to watch the path ahead because so much of it is beyond my control. Besides, everything moves too fast. Instead of focusing on the road, I end up looking at the scenery.
Dealing with enemies is extremely easy: just get close and press Space, Sonic will destroy them in one hit. Boss fights work the same way, the only difference is that you have to avoid the boss's attacks first and wait for your turn. Some boss fights involve repeated attacks or long chase sequences. Honestly, I didn't find anything particularly interesting or innovative in them.
There are 6 planets in the game, each with 6 short stages. You unlock the planets in order, the most memorable one is the planet with green eyes and mouth in the lower right. You can usually finish the 5 regular stages in 1-2 minutes each, and the boss stage in around 5 minutes. The whole game can be completed in less than 2 hours, if you don't bother collecting everything.
Collectibles are used to unlock items in the shop, including different colors for Sonic's shoes and gloves, avatars, and other cosmetic items. Unfortunately, there are no character suits, so the shop is pointless to me.
What kept me playing until the end was the short animated cutscene before each boss fight. I found them silly and funny. When I was young, I watched the Sonic cartoons and only cared about the good guys, I never wanted to see Eggman for one extra second. But in this game, he's hilarious, accompanied by two silly but cute robot servants. Eggman comes across as educated, civilized, good-mannered, decent looking, determined (in a funny way), and actually harmless - he doesn't really hurt anyone or play dirty tricks. He's a truly harmless villain.
One thing I found annoying is the double jump mechanic. The second jump only reaches half the height of the first one, and the vertical distance between many platforms is too precise, making it strict and tricky to clear with one try.
Sonic Colors: Ultimate is currently 70% off. It's alright if you're familiar with the Sonic series. If you're new to it, you might want to try other higher-rated Sonic games first or wait for a better price.

I'll be honest, I haven't even began to play the game yet so I have no idea what state this port is in as of 2026. I can say, however, that Denuvo can eat my entire ♥♥♥♥ for locking me out of the game for 24 hours because I installed it on both my Steam Deck and desktop within the same 30 minute period. Why SEGA still insist on shoving this crap in every single new release is beyond me, the only people it hurts are paying customers.
UPDATE: Now that I've been granted the privilege of playing the game, I can say with confidence that it is NOT worth playing without mods, and honestly even with mods the game itself does not hold up as well as I remember. Very basic level design, a nothingburger of a story, odd physics, and most of the game is 2D platforming. The highlight of the game is absolutely the soundtrack, go give it a listen on YouTube or Spotify or whatever, its great stuff.

Sonic Colors Últimate es aceptable... Sonic Colors es mi juego favorito en 3D de Sonic, su concepto de los Wisp, diseño de niveles y mundos hermosos y coloridos hizo que se volviera de mis juegos favoritos de la Wii y ver que lo traerían a más plataformas y con contenido nuevo hizo que me agradara mucho la idea en su dia, ahora tiempo después de que dejo de ser exclusivo de Épic Store (Jodete Épic) y que fuera arreglado parcialmente con el paso del tiempo... El juego tiene cosas buenas, hay nuevas novedades como personalización para Sonic, las batallas contra Metal Sonic, el nuevo Wisp fantasma, te permite alternar entre la nueva música hecha para el juego o elegir el clasico, ahora ciertos anillos rojos cambiaron de ubicación y Tails viene a reemplazar el sistema de vidas para venir a rescatarte en caso de caerte... Sin embargo, el juego todavía sigue teniendo alguno que otro bug ya sea de audio, alguno que otro con la cámara o en Starlight Zone donde puede hacerte perder el nivel, el molesto denuvo no ayuda y los nuevos agregados no son tampoco la gran cosa, siento que se pudo incluir cosas más interesantes como personajes jugables o nuevos niveles o aprovechar la ocasión y traer el Colors de DS...
En resumen, aún con sus defectos y algún que otro bug que puedas encontrar considero que Colors Últimate está en un estado aceptable, es un juego muy entretenido, algo corto pero bastante rejugable y además por las novedades que ofrece no te cuesta un ojo en la cara... Ya sea el original de Wii o Ultimate, Colors es un gran juego que vale la pena probar al menos una vez

even with all the updates and mods, buying this game is lowkey a waste of your time. find an iso of the wii version and get some upscaling mods for that and you'll have a 10x better experience there than here.
Great game, is beatable in two hours
Sonic games, especially 3D ones, are known for being pretty bad games. I remembered this one being good, but it's not, I was a stupid child. Half the mechanics are unutilised, the level designs are lame, and there are basically just 3 bosses. Just look at my playtime, that's how long it took for me to get to the end, and I spent at least 30 minutes eating some pie with the game open.
If you're feeling confident get this game and try beating it fast enough to get a refund after.
Solid Sonic game, in my opinion. Good gameplay, some extra challenge if you want to get S ranks and red stars. Very much worht it at a sale price. A lot of reviews seem to present it as buggy, unplayable, and a remaster that needs mods to make it playable. That's not my experience. Maybe there is some better experience to be had wiht mods or on the original console, but I couldn't be bothered to go through that work, and I didn't have any major issue with the game. I would recommend putting it on SSD if possible. The load times on a HD were unpleasant.
