Shovel Knight Dig is an absolute gem of a roguelite.

I love how it takes the classic Shovel Knight formula and reimagines it into a fast-paced, replayable experience. The roguelite structure keeps every run feeling fresh, with new paths, surprises, and upgrades that make it hard to put down. Even when you fail, you’re immediately ready to dive back in for “just one more run.”

The controls are incredibly tight and responsive. Movement feels smooth and precise, which is essential for a game that demands quick reactions and smart positioning. Digging downward at high speed while dodging enemies and hazards feels satisfying rather than frustrating, and that balance is hard to get right.

And the music? Absolutely fantastic. The soundtrack pumps energy into every run and perfectly matches the retro-inspired aesthetic. It captures that classic Shovel Knight vibe while still feeling fresh and exciting.

Having unlocked seemingly everything and doing the true ending, I feel that the game overall is okay/good. As a Rougelike, it lacks some of the substance one would like and many runs felt similiar.

However, as someone who adores Shovel Knight, the style and charm of the game worked wonders for me. The artstyle, characters, music and getting to experience more of this world is everything I could ask for. The platforming is pretty solid (but punishing) and the room generation is surprisingly good and varied, always making you pay attention and engage with the game.

If you, like me, just want more Shovel Knight to experience, I feel like this is a fun title to dive into, but don't expect a super in-depth rougelike. I had a fun and good time despite it's flaws.

Игра очень необычная в хорошем плане.
Не понимаю отрицательных отзывов на неё.
Игра прямо говорит что это совершенно другое.
Я сам являюсь фанатом первой игры, но я не считаю эту игру плохой. Наоборот, игру раскрыли в новом жанре и я считаю хорошо получилось! Продолжение получилось интересным, на пару-тройку вечеров.
Многим может не понравится, что приходится проходить всё заново после проигрыша, но после победы над боссами в лагере появляется платный срез до новой локации.
Геймплей, музыка, цветовая палитра всё на высшем уровне!
Игру крайне рекомендую, личная оценка 8/10 из лопат

Душный рогалик с примитивным сюжетом, неадекватной сложностью. кривым управлением, скудными механиками и невнятными правилами. Из плюсов: забавные новые персонажи и боссы, аутентичный визуал и соответствующее звучание. На этом плюсы заканчиваются.
Чем хороши оригинальный Shovel Knight и даже его дополнения - это максимально честный платформер, вылизанный до идеала. Если ты где-то проиграл, то это в 99% случаев исключительно твоя вина. Здесь же вместо того, чтобы делать интересные уровни, просто включили генератор рандома, накидали спрайтов врагов из оригинальной игры и выкрутили сложность на максимум. Всё, кушайте, не обляпайтесь. Если хотите сразу прочувствовать местное управление, которое просто уничтожили в сравнении с оригиналом, то во-первых, просто попрыгайте по врагам на лопате, а во-вторых, идите и сыграйте в магический теннис с местной волшебницей. Ах да, помните кайф от поиска секретов на локациях? Забудьте. Здесь вам не дадут насладиться игровым процессом бесконечно летящие из-за края экрана враги и ваншотящий гигантский, мать его и его разработчиков, экскаватор, устремляющийся к вашему анусу стоит хоть НЕМНОГО задержаться на одно месте. Так испортить оригинальную концепцию - это прям талант, конечно, но игра и как рогалик тоже паршивая, поскольку мета-прогрессия почти отсутствует, а обычная прогрессия отнимает много времени и сил, и может обнулиться тем самым экскаватором в любой момент. Особенно у меня пригорело, когда на пути к финальному боссу я застрял посреди уровня и не мог понять, что делать, после чего прилетела эта тварь, которую я смог уничтожить, получил чертёж костюма и мгновенно ваншотнулся, имея запас здоровья, вообще непонятно, чем. А застрял я потому, что оказывается летящие буры нужно было ударами отправлять в специальные гнёзда, чтоб открывать проходы. Но это была ПЕРВАЯ подобная встреча с механикой, и как я должен был догадаться об этом в экстренной ситуации, абсолютно непонятно. После чего я отлетел в самое начало игры, потеряв абсолютно весь часовой или полуторачасовой прогресс с парой десятков различных бонусов и кучей бабла, которое разлетелось по всему игровому миру. Игру в итоге прошёл на обычную концовку, но осадочек, мягко говоря, остался. Проходить на тру-концовку не буду явно, мне хватило беглого взгляда на условия её получения. Не располагает к повторному прохождению и то, что большая часть правил, по которым игра работает, осталась для меня загадкой. Оставлю эту загадку под толщей кала для будущих археологов.

Everything in this game is just a little too difficult and tedious to be fun. Even after two free DLCs that expand the game, it still feels like there aren't nearly enough items and modifiers to find to make each run feel truly different, and you'll likely die before picking up more than a handful anyway. Enemies are constantly spawning and coming in at awkward angles to cheap shot you, you have very little health, and the health upgrades are far too rare. The digging gimmick means you'll often fall right past crucial items without a real chance to backtrack to get them (unless you're lucky enough to have one of the few items that let you ascend), or fall directly into an unseen hazard.

Outside of unlocking possible relics or upgrades for future runs, the only permanent upgrades you can purchase are armors that all have major downsides to balance the benefits they give you, meaning that you have no way of permanently increasing your avatar strength to make future runs easier. The game also lacks basic courtesies that modern roguelites usually give players, such as letting you equip a new upgrade for free for your next run when you unlock it at the store. It's incredibly frustrating to go through an entire incredibly difficult, multi step side quest, only to be rewarded with something you can't use unless you find it on a future run.

And this is no Binding of Isaac situtation where you can get incredibly overpowered abilities or monstrously powerful synergies. The game's ruthlessly dedicated to keeping you weak and making sure it can end you with the weakest of enemies. The lack of variety of upgrades is only matched by how pitiful so many of them feel. Very slightly extending the range of your basic attack, a ground based projectile you can only use at full health, a temporary speed boost if you bounce on two enemies, an incredibly slow to trigger floating ability. These would be balanced if they were permanent upgrades in a traditional platformer, not possible pickups in a roguelite.

The game is afraid of being fun.

Главная проблема Shovel Knight DIG количество контента, а скорее его отсутствие. DLC не сильно исправляют положение, хотя было столько надежд. Генерация скудная. Сложность очень высока, я здесь конечно кланяюсь, сделать такой коктейль из неудобств это надо уметь! Лопатный Рыцарь здесь более тяжёлый по сравнению с физикой из Shovel of Hope.
Всё таки, в игру интересно играть, заходя в неё изредка, а так, думаю зайдёт лишь фанатам лопатного.

Shovel Knight Dig is a very simple, yet fun and well made roguelike. The titular character, Shovel Knight, descends into a cavernous pit in the earth, in search of dangerous foes titled "Hexcavators" and the gems they guard, all leading to the villainous Drill Knight, head honcho of the operation. Gameplay wise, well, the best way to sum it up is: If you played Shovel Knight before, imagine that but a roguelike.

Players collect several items, hundreds of treasures, and plenty of hidden food, perfectly preserved somehow. The main gimmick comes in the form of the Shovel Knights ability to dig, all levels are structured vertically, with the player quite literally digging further and further down. Upgrades are also found while adventuring, as is standard for most games in this genre. Upgrades such as defenses, magic boosts, and even jump height will make the journey much easier. at the end of each zone, you encounter a boss fight, upon defeating them, you'll get further and further in achieving your goals.

Outside of the well, a small camp filled with friendly faces is ready to greet you. You can buy permanent upgrades with the gems you've cashed in, as well as items that can be taken with you down below to open up secrets. Occasionally, you might just stumble upon a quest. Fulfilling said quests will give you many rewards, as well as access to even more quests later. Some quests are done in the safety of the camp, while others are found down in the many depths themselves, which can give you some incentive during a run.

Overall, the game plays well, is presented well, and feels like a worthy game to sink some hours into. If you're a fan of Shovel Knight or not, this game has lots to keep playing for.

Simplesmente eu adorei esse jogo, muito divertido fazer as conquistas, a aleatoriedade do que vai acontecer e ser muito difícil. Meu único ponto negativo é que, o jogo não traz a sensação de progressão, mesmo comprando relíquias e melhorias não parece que mudou muito desde quando você começa a jogar.
Outro ponto é que o update que eles deram não foi muito grande, apesar de adicionar coisas interessantes pro jogo não foi tanta coisa legal que teve de nova. Mas no geral o jogo ainda consegue ser muito divertido.

[b]Never played any "Shovel Knight" game before...[/b]
And according to their website, this is the first game in the timeline. So here I went to try it.

It starts with very childish animations, pixel art, and chiptune right from the beginning. My first impression was: “okay… this is going to be very silly, right?” Then the game begins: a lot of things happen in a glimpse of a second, I barely recall what happened, but suddenly there’s a hole in the ground — and that’s where the game really starts.

I jump in, and less than 30 seconds later I’m dead. Too many enemies swarming, spikes everywhere, traps, things flying across the screen. You only get 3 hit points, no dash, no shield, no real way to defend yourself.

So I try again. This time, I go slower… but if you move too slow, the screen literally crushes you from above. So you’re forced to rush forward, always under pressure.
Die again.

Back to town, I need to do some mini-games to unlock areas. They feel tedious and unfun, filled with exaggerated “jokes” that didn’t land for me. More mini-games, more quirky dialogue, more of the same.

Honestly, I don’t know what this game is trying to achieve. For me, it was frustrating from start to finish. The constant pressure, the over-the-top characters trying to be funny, the chiptune music (I had to mute it)… none of it clicked.

[b]Why do I play games? To have fun.[/b] This one had me annoyed so quickly that I ended up requesting a refund. Not my style, and I won’t be touching this series again.

It's a mediocre rouge-lite. Game is super short and lacks depth unless you want to go for the true ending. Which is a painful experience to say the least with little to no pay off if you're lucky enough to have gotten through it. If you want a good rouge-lite there's better. If you want to play through all the shovel knight content it plays fine but completionists beware.

Had a lot of fun on this game. Gameplay is simple but enjoyable, bosses are fun, and the game has that classic Shovel Knight charm. Relics and items make each run somewhat fresh, but the game does definitely get repetitive after a while. A new hub was added in the update, and with it came npcs, quests, and "story lines" that were honestly a blast. I would not recommend 100% completing this game however-the knightmares game mode was super frustrating to get through, with a boss at the end that was not worth the suffering-luckily its completely optional. Ultimately, Shovel Knight Dig is a solid game that doesnt do anything amazing but is still fun and imo is worth the price. 7.5/10

This game is fun....when it is most like Shovel Knight. The roguelite elements are not that great. You don't seem like you progress much after every run. However, I found myself coming back for more each time so it does seem like there is some sort of addictive gameplay loop here. One thing is for sure, Steam Deck owners can get a lot of mileage out of the arcade-styled nature of the game. The music by Jake Kaufman is excellent. I don't think there is a single tune in this game I don't like.

It's definitely a strange spinoff to Shovel Knight that is worth checking out a discount. Just don't keep your expectations too high though.

Shovel Knight's hop to 32-bit is spectacular. What you love of the original game is present and more with the roguelite dungeons keeping you entertained and the challenges to perfect yourself as you progress in the simple yet charming story.

My only complain is the auto down shovel strike that you as default unlike the previous game where you could just press down yourself but the game play is built around the mechanic, you can get used to it.

The graphics are as beautiful as always, looking polished and bright with the help of Nitrome. The bosses are fun and challenging, harder than Shovel Knight's previous games but far from impossible. The items from previous games are back with even more to explore, obtained through minigames, in shops, or hidden in chests throughout the adventure. The sound design is amazing and Jake Kaufman's music keeps the vibe of the blue knight perfectly. There is a lot of post-game content to explore and replayability is very encouraged.

4.5/5 rating for me and you should play it if you like random dungeons, treasures, and shovels.

100% recommend checking it out yourself and Yacht Club Games's other titles. I already tried out Mina the Hollower demo and I'm loving it, can't wait for the full release

I really wanted to like this game but the more I played the more I just couldn't. I got the true ending and everything, so I didn't just write it off.

This game is not a worthy successor to the first shovel knight, it's a roguelike that doesn't even want to be a roguelike. It doesn't have the same charm as the first game, or fully utilizes what makes roguelike's great.It doesn't utilize what made SK great, with concise platforming or great level design or a great story. All the "levels" are randomized, so you don't get that good level design.

If you want a good roguelike, I have no reason to tell you to play this, and if you want a good platformer like the first game, I also have no reason to tell you to play this. This game has no reason to be a roguelike, has no reason to not just be shovel knight 2, and frankly, has no real reason to exist.

I wanted to like this game, and I hate that I don't.

в игре очень бесит механика что нет нормальных сохранений, типо если ты умер на каком-то боссе или в любой локации тебе придется начинать с начало, тем не менее арт стиль геймплей, графика, звуки и т.д на высшем уровне, это то что хотелось бы от второй (по сути) части, лопаты надежды. НО НЕ ЭТА БЕСЯЧАЯ МЕХАНИКА У МЕНЯ ЖОПА ГОРИТ (ну возможно есть какие либо способы сохраниться на локации, не покупая телепорт, если вы знаете как то коменты открыты)

Some very frustrating parts about this game
- Bad camera
- ...leading you to get hit by enemies from offscreen.
- ...leading you to fall onto enemies in blind jumps and take damage for no reason.
- ...you can't leave auto-shovel stab on, or it can mess up blocks you land on and get you hit anyway, or have you fall somewhere you didn't want to go.
- Controls often feel sluggish/delayed which is bad in a reaction-speed based game like this.
- Character acceleration is horrible, combined with absurd knockback, leading to cheap hits/getting stuck in enemies/stuck in spike pits.
- Horrible hitboxes. You unlock the charge upgrade, buy it in the dungeon for 1000+ gold, charge it up by double stabbing... and then the hitbox is as small as your regular shovel slash. What? It's tiny.

グラフィックやＢＧＭ等、外見的なクオリティは高い。

しかし、ローグライトでありながらプレイ感はあまりにも一定。アイテムの種類は少なく、それによってプレイ方針が決まるわけでもない。アクションローグライトにありがちなことだが、変わらないプレイ感のまま”既に倒した敵"に挑み続けるだけの苦行が続く。

本家のようなステージ攻略型アクションか、リプレイ性の高いローグライトか、どちらかに振り切ってほしい。現状はとても中途半端だ。

Great game!

This is a mildly challenging roguelike..

your performance is linked to your skill and your understanding of the game, so focus on learning something new and try to get a little further every attempt.. failed attempts are all part of the process, you start fresh each run. You can unlock new items with the currency you earn, but you'll always start with the absolute basics every time (afaik)

I really wanted to like Shovel Knight Dig—I even waited for the DLC cycle to finish before trying it out, just to ensure I played it in its best state. Yes, the game looks great, and it's attached to a tried-and-true franchise. But the truth is, SKD just isn't very good.

The game's roguelite systems are remarkably mediocre, with boring item design that renders both in-run progression and metaprogression deeply uninteresting. Additionally, much of the moment-to-moment gameplay feels explicitly anti-player, with off-screen hazards and deliberately miss-able shops standing out as particularly consistent frustrations. This is all without mentioning the exhausting layers of RNG that permeate quest design.

It's a shame, because there are some decent ideas here—the shoveling movement feels good, and the procedural generation engine is actually quite good at creating distinctly different levels. Unfortunately, though, much of the core design is so poor that the game simply isn't fun to play.

If you're a hardcore fan of this specific niche (retro-inspired roguelite platformer), maybe you could try SKD on sale—but I myself am squarely in the target audience, and I still didn't enjoy the game. As a result, I really can't recommend it at all. If you're craving a sidescrolling roguelite, try Rogue Legacy 2, Risk of Rain Returns, Rising Hell, Caveblazers, Ancient: Legacy of Azul, ScourgeBringer, Vagante, or Critadel instead.

Shovel Knight Dig is a great game that I've really enjoyed, and it has a lot to offer for the Shovel Knight universe.

Unfortunately, I've seen a lot of people giving it negative reviews for several reasons that I'd like to clarify:

1. "The game doesn't have extra bosses or alternate routes." This is false. [Spoiler] There is a very difficult alternative route with a second final boss that shows us important details of Shovel Knight's story. [/Spoiler] In addition, there are 4 bosses that were added in the 2 free DLCs.

2. "The game isn't a good roguelike because it doesn't have permanent upgrades." When that's precisely what roguelikes do. If you lose a run, you start from scratch with nothing. But people are so used to roguelites and their progression systems and permanent upgrades that they forget roguelikes exist. Even though the game doesn't offer permanent upgrades for the player, you can unlock things that are added in future runs, such as relics, shovel upgrades, or accessories.

In short, Shovel Knight Dig is a fairly complete game that doesn't fail in any aspect of its genre, and I highly recommend it.

I honestly like this more than the original Shovel Knight, it's so much smoother and cleaner with much tighter controls, no frustrating platforming bottlenecks, and Nitrome's graphics are excellent. This is a format I find works really well for the Shovel Knight control scheme.

The game is often compared to Downwell, but while Downwell is a minimalist approach to the rougelike platformer, Shovel Knight Dig is a maximalist approach to the vertically oriented rougelike platform. The full depth of it's mechanics and hidden content will not be revealed until after many playthroughs. I'm a particular fan of the cog mechanic in the game, which I find to be one of the best and more organic balances between risk and reward I've seen in these games. The game also has one of the most intense optional quests I've seen in this genre, requiring extensive but fair problem solving, as well as thorough understanding of the mechanics as well as physical mastery in order to complete.

This is being written on the tail of the Wicked Wishes, which added some nice bonus content but nothing which fundamentlaly changes the game. The actual quality life improvements that vastly improved the game were made shortly after release, so I don't know why people are acting like they were only added now. There have been additional quality of life improvements with this release, but the ones people were complaining about in other reviews were fixed long ago.

Very much fixed thanks to wicked wishes! A very fun rougelike with lots of run variety (espcially with wishes), really run level design and bosses, and armours that change your gameplay a lot.

The new relics and accessories are also really fun, as are the new beefto and skele side rooms!

I think the difficulty is a bit too overtuned at first, so if you're having trouble I reccomend focusing on completing the wicked wishes missions and the accessories they give you are much better than the default and also have some upgrades to the pets and relics. Highly reccomend, very glad they updated this game as it's now one of my favourites!

Here is my review of Shovel Knight Dig:

The game advertises itself as a digging game. Yet the digging is tertiary to the actual experience. When I think a digger, I think of games where you dig, upgrade your shovel, and dig faster. It's a relatively zen experience. This game is actually more of a roguelight platformer, but with vertical movement instead. Reminds me more of a splunky or downwell instead of a terror or steamworld dig.

Overall, it's fine. No strong feelings either way.

I had always had a complicated relationship with this game. I have always been a HUGE Shovel Knight fan once I got Treasure Trove on my switch back when King of Cards had just released. When I got word that a prequel game was going to come out, and I learned about Nitrome and fell in love with their catalog, I got incredibly excited.
When it came out, I was a bit disappointed. It was cruel. Like, beyond normal Shovel Knight levels of cruel. I eventually became sick of the game. That was, until the Fate and Fortune DLC came out. Black Knight is my favorite character from the series, so I decided to give the game a second go. Turns out, I ended up becoming more sick of it because of how much crueler the Knightmares were, and I just ended up letting the game rot in my Steam Library.
Then recently, around a year after the newest DLC, Wicked Wishes, was announced, I started to play the game again. I fell in love with what I had previously considered an annoyance. I still had my share of annoyances for sure, but I liked the game a lot more than before. AND THEN I GOT A PING ON DISCORD SAYING THE DLC WAS COMING OUT IN JUST A MONTH OH MY GODDDDDD
anyway I was very excited and I counted the days as it came closer and closer. Then May 15th came and I was incredibly happy with what I saw. A lot of my issues were fixed. Food Items being like. Super strong before were patched, Max HP upgrades were far easier to come by, The new additions to the well gave a lot more interest and variety to runs than simply just. Obtaining Spike Scabatrons and winning the game. AND OH MY GOD THE QUESTS ARE REALLY FUN. Only one I don't like is the final volleyball one with the mage, that one's definitely a bit tedious. Some of the guided bounces are a bit inconsistent to hit due to their speed.
Other than that though, I have some minor nitpicks/requests so I will simply list 'em in bullets.
- I find myself constantly switching back and forth between menu and shop when I find Master Argus' Shovel Techniques shop to check my current upgrades. Maybe a display that shows your current upgrades when you enter the shop could help? Maybe it's just a me problem
- The little screws you can bounce on in the Smeltworks seem to have a small animation error, because the little arrows seem to change size when returning to their idle state. Maybe it's intentional, but I figured I would point it out.
- Maybe a way to skip the [spoiler] Altius cutscenes when doing the true ending? [/spoiler] I don't have much reasoning for this to be added, but I'd welcome it as a change.
- This may have changed in the update, but [spoiler] why doesn't Black Knight have a unique boss theme for the secret boss? [/spoiler] Mainly a nitpick.
With that out of the way, I'm very happy with this update and how it's shaped the game to become even better. I wish the best of luck to both Yacht Club and Nitrome in the future. Thank you for this wonderful game.

Gosto muito da arte do jogo, os personagens são bem animados e os níveis gerados aleatoriamente sempre surpreendem, mesmo que fique repetitivo em algum ponto. É bem difícil conseguir o final verdadeiro, mas você pode seguir normalmente o jogo se falhar em alguma das metas para esse final. A variedade de itens e inimigos também me chama a atenção. Torcendo pra dlc Wicked Wishes trazer mais coisa legal. A trilha sonora também é legalzinha.

Such a good shovel knight game but one of the most milquetoast roguelikes i have ever played.

as you know, lets get to the positive. you are going to get a VERY fun game I may even be bold to say if any of these levels after the first stage got made into an actual shove knight level it would be contentender for one of the best levels. Fantastic music, fun gameplay beautiful design. it hits ever marker for a great game. HOWEVER, this game is a roguelike and needs to be put up with other RLs on the market and let me just say the variety in gameplay is...rough

The bad is that the game lacks variety. Build crafting, different armors, level designs. All of it discourages replaying its a small game guys. you can beat a run in 20 minutes if you get slightly profiecient in the game and there is no way to do run backs or anything.

But the worse part of it is getting the true ending which as you know is a staple in RLs. Doing some crazy stuff during the run to COMPLETE the game. this games true ending run is just...bad. Because it is unforgiving. One wrong move, one missed secret and your run is FORFIET. worse part is a simple tresure trove dlc or making ANY unlock for doing the true ending worth it would have fixed this game

yall its a small game and you are paying more than a bigger game but hey! Nitrome helped made it so its going to be good! you are going to love this game if you like shovel knight but you are going to be wanting more in the worst way possible.

7/10 this game needs a content update and a big one. make shield knight playable! would have been perfect. i am excited to see more of drill knight in this dlc. he actually better made than the enchantress and that shows how good his theming was.
