i love the amnesia games and soma, this is very similar, same team but this is the first series of games, so its a bit rough at points in ways that dont exist in amnesia or soma. a bit more trial and error leading to death till you figure what to do in that scenario. Death is also not part of the story of the game as it is in amnesia, but just a traditional reload last save system, its really cool how they evolved this to become a part of the story essentially in amnesia. also you can actually kill certain enemies, and you immediately will see why they stopped doing it, super frustration

Um grande jogo e muito impressionante dado ao baixo orçamento e também como o primeiro jogo a sério da Frictional. Tal como as suas sequelas o jogo tem uma excelente história, gameplay que surpreendentemente envelheceu muito bem e uma música de créditos absolutamente perfeita. A única coisa menos boa que tenho a apontar é o combate que é bastante fraquinho, coisa que é resolvida na sequela.

The puzzles are great, the voice acting is here and there but this was frictonals first game and not enough budgit, the music/ambiance are great, the writing perfect, gameplays ok, one thing i hated/loved was at the end with one charactor, Red. His backstory was so sad he should have desrived much better
Penumbra is about as primitive as it gets for Frictional Games, which is good because while I certainly had fun with this short start to the series, there are definitely some things about it that annoyed me.
I really don't care for telling the story strictly through documents scattered across the game,
which isn't helped by there not being a huge drive to seek out the story as I wasn't hooked by anything other than the fact that I love Frictional's other games. Combat is really bad. The fact that there is combat is huge but it's executed atrociously.
Yes, you can kill the enemies which is nice, but who playtested this and said anything beyond a simple click to swing a weapon was a good idea, let alone the interpretive dance you actually have to do? Enemies are nothing special; dogs and spiders, which move fast and have small hit boxes, making combat even harder.
All those negatives aside, I still did have fun playing it, though I was rather relieved to be done with it.
Of course the atmosphere and sound design are the strongest aspect, even with the charmingly dated visuals, I felt immersed enough. Despite the prevously mentioned problems, this game really felt like the progenitor to Amnesia: the Dark Descent, which is why I didn't mind not fully understanding what was going on throughout the entire thing. If you're like me and just wanted to cross this one off the list or really want some more Frictional, give this one a go, otherwise, look elsewhere. Hoping the rest of the series is an improvement.

It is old, and it really feels old, but overall I really recommend anyone to play this game. It's an atmospheric game with elements of the horror genre.

Zdecydowanie nie dla ludzi którzy nie lubią czytać notatek lub skupiać się na fabule.
Raczej się zbytnio nie wystraszycie, więc jeśli ktoś nie lubi straszaków i głośnych dźwięków to śmiało można grać.
Zagadki ciekawe, niektóre mniej intuicyjne od innych (z tworzeniem mieszanki wybuchowej na czele) ale ogółem 👍
Grafika jak można się spodziewać dosyć stara, jednak dzięki temu nie ma żadnych ścinek a klimat tamtych lat uważam za zdecydowany plus.
Nice game but something is missing in it. You always wait for some big thing will be revealed, but nothing happens in the end. It is more like a passage to the next game, Black Plague. Still, some parts are really good. Reading notes and other stuff around is my favorite thing in games. This game satisfied me in that part. Also, liked the Red. It is sad to learn his past and struggles. You also learn more about him in Black Plague. Poor soul, he resisted all the time.

I have no idea why but my playtime for the game is screwed up, its probably closer to 4.5 hours that my playthrough was. Overall, I like this game a lot. It is nothing that will blow your expectations away, but its a fun few hour experience. I think there's a certain charm to the style of graphics this game has that most modern indie horror games don't tend to imitate since they're either unreal engine or they're imitating the ps1 style. That isn't to say the graphics are anything special either, but they do evoke a good atmosphere. The puzzles are fun to figure out and none of them feel overly obtuse, so it is actually fun to figure them out. I think the biggest issue I can think of is that this is only half of the overall game, with Black Plague being a direct continuation, and story wise its the significantly less interesting half. Most of this game is just teasing what Black Plague will be, so I think some of the stuff in this one (minus Red) aren't super memorable in comparison to the sequel.
I played the game on Hard mode, though i'm not sure how much of a difference the various difficulties have. For hard mode it basically just meant enemies would kill you in two hits, so some sections based on speed means you just kind of die a couple of times until you figure out the pattern of where you're supposed to go. When it came to the dog enemies I definitely didn't play how you were supposed to, as i'd usually just go out of my way to kill them instead of sneaking around them. I like the options you're given in that regard. I'm an item hoarder so I avoided using any consumables in my entire playthrough, so there's a couple gameplay mechanics i'm sure I missed out on, so I can't comment on those.
Overall, i'd recommend the game if you just want a short atmospheric adventure. But only do so if you also intend to play Black Plague, as both games are two halves of one experience.

Penumbra Overture og dens efterfølger, Penumbra Black Plague, er to fantastiske spil. Deres atmosfære, soundtrack og historie er upåklagelig, selvom løsningen af visse situationer nogle gange, som i mange andre spil, føles lidt kunstig. Desuden får disse spil meget lidt anerkendelse, på trods af at de er Frictional Games' to første kommercielle projekter. En 10 ud af 10 for begge (bortset fra Penumbra Requiem, som ikke har noget at gøre med hovedhistorien).
I enjoyed this game! one of the first pc horror games I played. The time getting caught was the spookiest and made it easier after knowing the results. Been long enough since my last play that I could probably play it again sometime soon.

So it's the first game of Frictional Games, the creators of the Legendary Amnesia, however this game is a lot darker AND slower.

You receive a letter from your deceased father who gives you the coordinates of an old mine in an artic region, don't remember exactly where, but you're haunted with curiosity so you decide to go.
In this place you find all sorts of things and a guy who got trapped there, from there on out you have to do as per usual, find notes, solve puzzles and run for your life whenever possible.
PROS:
Good atmosphere: it feels claustrophobic and tense, recommended headphones for a better experience
Nice soundtrack: The eerie sounds and the noises make you feel like you're about to get killed if you get jumped
Enemy variety: I'll leave that to your imagination, specially in the cave sections...
CONS:
A little old: I'm not a graphics-phillic but this game is old, so don't expect to see ultra detailed enemies and visceral imagery, so if you have a graphical mod to improve it along with the lighting then that would be good
Lighting: I never used the flashlight, in my settings it wasn't necessary, but as I mentioned if you get a mod or something in your settings that can make the experience feel more immersive then that would be better
Repetitive at times: The game feels incredible because of the mapping, however, this also leads to a "I know where I have to go and I feel like I know what to do" I like to think but the pathing and the cues make it a little too simple, like walking in a maze with nothing interesting to feel between areas
Enemies: I'll be brutally honest here, if you get certain objects and you learn the pathing of enemies then you're set in the maze sections, basically you can clean shave the place of some enemies, except for others which are more of an annoyance than an actual threat.
However if you have extra change and you have a free weekend where you want to do something more slow paced then by all means try it.
Just remember this was their first "big" game, so cut it some slack

Cold, Dark, and Annoying
Now, before I talk about this game, I want to clarify that this is Chapter 1, and Penumbra: Black Plague continues/concludes the story, which I haven't yet experienced. So, perhaps that game is good enough to warrant playing this one.
As is, this game offers very little in scares or interesting puzzle design, which is almost entirely what this game is offering. So, as an experience, I found it lack luster and a bit boring.
First, this game run well, but the options for graphics appear to be bugged (it may just be me, but it was consistent and the game is old enough that I would hazard that others might encounter similar issues). When setting the Gamma, I couldn't get the game dark enough to actually warrant using any of the lights I was provided, until I restarted my game and suddenly couldn't see ANYTHING, even in lit areas. I would recommend not messing with the Gamma after your initial setting to prevent issues. The dark was so bad I could barely see the menus to fix it. On top of poor performance, certain items in the world worked sporadically. You are able to pick up "jerky" in the game, which is used exclusively to lure enemies away to make stealth segments easier. You'll never need to actually use the jerky, which is good, because most of the time it didn't do anything. At first I thought it was because I didn't put it close enough, but I had enemies walk on top of the jerky a few times and utterly ignore it, so I think it's just broken at times. Thankfully, none of the mechanics needed for progression were broken for me, so I made it through the game without issue on that front.
Now, as for the game proper, it appears that the developers weren't sure how exactly they wanted you to navigate the world. You're told VERY early on that your light will give away your position and attract enemies, and if you sit in a dark environment for a second or two, you'll develop better night vision allowing you to see your surroundings without issues. So, the game gives you 3 different items for light sources: a torch(flashlight), a glowstick, and flares. The glow stick has infinite usage, but only illuminates a small area, the flashlight is powered by batteries, but expires extremely quickly, and flares light up a large area but are single use. I didn't need to use any light source ever, and when I wanted more light, I just used the glow stick, but most of the time I didn't use any lights to keep enemies from killing me. Because of the lighting issue I had, and the lack of detrimental effects of being in the darkness, you'll also likely never use any light source, which makes all those items useless.
The enemies are also a little too easy to avoid, but too difficult to be rid of. You're given a few weapons (melee only) but trying to use them is a recipe for death. You're NOT going to kill an enemy before it kills you. You can find a few sticks of dynamite, but you'll need several to kill an enemy, and if more than one enemy is in an area (which is essentially always the case) you'll get swarmed before you can take out a single enemy. Obviously, this game is not asking you to kill the enemies, you're meant to avoid them. The issue then is, "Why did the game even bother giving you items that are meant solely for killing enemies?" The answer is, because the game doesn't really know what it wants to be.
The final piece of the gameplay puzzle is, the actual puzzles. For the majority of the game, I found the puzzles to be enjoyable. They range from navigation puzzles where you need to use physics objects in the environment to circumnavigate obstacles or deciphering notes written by other people to learn formulae or codes. None of the puzzles are difficult, but a few at the end of the game are VERY un-intuitive and make me believe i was doing something wrong. For example, you'll need to cross a frozen lake; if you investigate the lake, your character will state that you shouldn't walk on it, and if you try to anyway, you'll fall into the lake and die. Well, you're actually supposed to walk across the lake anyway. I read that supposedly if you walk slowly enough, you can keep the ice from breaking, but playing on mouse and keyboard and couldn't ever go slow enough to prevent the ice from breaking. Luckily, if you walk forwards then backwards to break the ice but not fall in, you can then simply jump across the ice on the now floating pieces, but only some of them, as others will capsize and kill you. Without looking up that I was in-fact meant to go that way, everything about he sequence was telling me that I wasn't meant to navigate the lake, which I would count as bad game design. Another puzzle is poorly worded making you believe that you need to pry the wrong item open, which you cant, so you'll be stuck until you look it up or get lucky. and One other puzzle requires you to do something under extreme time pressure, which the game has never required before and will never require again, so another problematic puzzle on the board.
All told, I didn't find this game to offer any real scares, the stealth is tedious and boring, and the story isn't compelling enough to really engage the player. Hopefully the second entry is better, but as is, this is one you can skip. Amnesia is a MUCH better implementation of this games mechanics. I'd recommend playing that if you want a solid horror experience with these mechanics.

Penumbra: Overture is often considered a cult classic and the predecessor to Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and you can definitely see the foundations of Frictional’s later work here. It focuses more on atmosphere, puzzles, and tension rather than combat, which I appreciated.
That said, the game really shows its age. Movement feels clunky, and the physics-based interactions, while could be impressive for 2007, can be awkward. Swinging a hammer or manipulating objects often turns into a bit of a mouse-wrestling match. The jumping mechanics were honestly scarier than some of the monsters; I died more to platforming than to actual enemies.
The horror and chase sequences do create some solid tension, though. Getting cornered or stuck while something is chasing you can definitely raise your heart rate. The puzzles are manageable, and the story is fairly straightforward.
The dog enemies, however, are frustrating to deal with. Lord knows how many times I have died to them. I definitely had to cheese my way past a few encounters.
Overall, it’s not bad and not amazing. Just a solid early survival horror experience that laid the groundwork for something greater. If you enjoy older horror titles or want to see where Amnesia began, it’s worth checking out. Just be ready for some dated mechanics.

Fajny klasyczny horror straszący nie jumpskerami a dzwiekiem w tym świetną muzyką i klimatem tajemnicy, grafikę niestety dopadł czas ale mimo to gra się broni, fizyka używana do zagadek jest wykonana ciekawie, przeciwnicy: psy i pająki nie są niestety straszni i w wiekszości nie stanowią problemu. Ogólnie polecam mysle że warto zagrać samemu w tego klasyka :)

Недавно обмыв новый олед монитор на 32 дюмы, решил побороть свой детский страх. Спойлер: Удалось. Игра всё еще до усера меня пугала, как в детстве, но я её таки поборол. Игра по атмосферности 10\10, сюжет звезд с неба не хватает, но тот кому нравится всякий научпоп с лабораториями и тд. - понравится, а вот техническое состояние прям твёрдая единица, всё классную атмосферу разбавляли микрофризы при повороте камеры. Все фиксы, которые были на писигеймвики не помогли.

Поэтому ругать игру в нынешнее время не стоит.. как бы. Игра по началу ну довольно жуткая, но потом как-то так — бегаешь от собак =)
Многие моменты прям довольно сложные, и да (старые игры прохожу на сложном уровне), чувствуется это, чем к примеру в той же Half-Life. Ну из всего механика драки, камеру ещё можно было бы двигать.
I finished Amnesia the Bunker at the beginning of winter, and the Penumbra series had been in my library for a long time, and when I saw other Amnesia games at a big discount during the winter sale, I realized that it was time to get acquainted with other "Frictional Games" games.
I decided to go by year of release, and the first one was Penumbra Overture. And in fact, I was not disappointed at all. Even though it wasnt very scary, even for me, and the plot wasn't as exciting, it was still fun to play. I found interacting with each object using mouse movement very interesting. And I always liked the vibe of old games)
Of course, it's not as good as the last Amnesia, but firstly, there's a 16-year difference between them, and secondly, it's not a comparison, it just shows how much the developers have progressed during this time, and it doesn't negate the fact that their first project was also a pretty good game. And I am happy to continue my descent into other "Frictional Games" games, and I hope that I will not be disappointed in the future)

Penumbra overture is very old but its still good but its not that scary. I like the grafiks but the interface and items are a little bit clumsy.

Ну что ж игра от создателей амнезии. Я не в одну часть не играл, но наслышан что это атмосферные и страшные игры. Это игра для современных геймеров покажется не очень, но на самом деле она умеет напугать. Достаточно запутанный сюжет и спойлер ( концовка на клифхенгере). Управление на клаве норм.
Плюс скачивал русификатор текста и озвучки, также мод на немного абскеленные текстуры для лучшего качества.
Самое крутое в ней это саундтрек, который подчеркивает некоторые моменты и усиливает напряжение.
Играл на 3080 и райзен 5 5600. Моник 180 герц, но в игре лок на 60.
Игра топ за свои деньги однозначно рекумендую, но никогда не ставте минимальное разрешение, иначе будем пизкхм.

Penumbra: Overture se destaca principalmente pela atmosfera. O jogo trabalha muito bem o suspense, a tensão constante e a sensação de isolamento, colocando o jogador em ambientes hostis que passam claramente a impressão de que você não deveria estar ali. A ambientação é opressiva e sustenta o terror mais pela antecipação do perigo do que por sustos diretos.
A história não é o foco principal, mas funciona como um bom pano de fundo. Ela é interessante, e é contada de forma sutil, por meio de documentos, narração e do próprio ambiente. Essa abordagem combina bem com o tom do jogo e reforça a imersão sem quebrar o ritmo da exploração.
O gameplay se destaca nos puzzles e na exploração, que são bem pensados e incentivam atenção constante ao cenário. Já o combate é claramente o ponto mais fraco: é travado, pouco refinado e sofre com uma IA ruim. Ainda assim, isso não compromete tanto a experiência, já que o jogo deixa claro que evitar confrontos é quase sempre a melhor opção.
No geral, é um bom survival horror que vale a pena ser jogado. Ele ainda não tem o refinamento de títulos posteriores do estúdio, mas já apresenta muitas das ideias que seriam melhor desenvolvidas depois. Funciona muito bem como uma experiência atmosférica por si só e também como um passo importante na evolução do estilo que culminaria em algo mais polido no futuro.

- Для фулл хд и других широкоформатных разрешений отсутствует масштабирование. Поэтому весь текст, некоторые надписи интерфейса, записки и прочее заходят куда-то за край экрана, и их тупо невозможно прочитать. В 720p такой фигни нет, но играть в 720 в 2026 это уже перебор.
- Читать записки, чтобы узнать решение ребуса. Мне-то до тошноты не хочется вникать в любой сюжет, а тут читать, чтоб просто продвинуться по геймплею.
- Кривые не страшные чучела вместо монстров, серьёзно собака, паучки и большой червяк с размером в туннель.
- Тяп ляп боевка, неудивительно, что во второй части ее напрочь стёрли.
- Максимум 60 герц, сплошные лаги для матрицы с 144 герц. Конечно, это проблема всех игр frictional games, кроме последней амнезии 2023 года, ведь только тогда завезли поддержку хотя бы 120 герц.
- Баги в наличии, ставим фиксы.

+ Приятный саунд-дизайн, звук ходьбы, подбор предметов и т. д
+ Заменитель фонарика зелёная палочка или же химсвет, нравится её дизайн, а также её зеленое освещение. Жалко, что мало в каких играх используют химсвет вместо обычного фонарика.
+ Графика даже для своего года, ну такое. Но этот визуальный вайб игр из 2000х прекрасен.

This is quantitative maybe. I like Frictional's newer games, but this one is showing its age. It's ugly, the controls are clunky and the combat sucks. The story is good if you can muddle through the rest of it.
Penumbra Overture, that one game that even after almost 20 years people's opinion range from "Ah.. that game holds a special place in my heart, I'm not sure why" to "Honestly? I did not like it at all". I had a day with no internet and I proceeded to play until the internet came back (which was a large chunk of the game) and then went to finish it the next day. The result was.. probably some of the most clashing experiences I've had with a game
You see, the first half is a lot about small claustrophobic spaces where EVERY SINGLE STEP makes the wood creak, including the doors. I would hear breathing, sobbing, steps and I would be like "OK I AM SO ♥♥♥♥♥♥". I was so scared I was basically able to breath properly only on loading screens. Terror aside, Penumbra's non-combat non-fear OST is so [url=https://youtu.be/AryvQ4j1kIw?si=jtubDVQZXmaqqnoL]serene and dreamy[/url] I enjoyed it so much.
Right before the crane puzzle, I stopped playing for the rest of the day.

[spoiler]Day 2 for me felt like the game didn't have secrets anymore. I accidentally got on top of a crate while running from some dogs and noticed I could attack them while they couldn't attack me. I noticed that the spider enemies not only are scared of flashlights, but only appear if you smash eggs and that regardless, you can also do the crate trick but also stunlock them if you dont have one. Later on I also found out the glowstick is infinite so I found myself not using the flashlight unless there were spiders so the resource comsuption also stopped being a stress factor.
Understanding the combat, that I was near the end of the game and genuinely enjoying the way the combat worked, I found myself clearing rooms of enemies to be able to rush and backtrack without issue rather than scared, stressed and engaged. The game also has certain elements of the stealth like luring enemies to traps which I forced myself to interact with to experience it, but it all came to the same thing; [b]I stopped being scared[/b].
I'm ngl, I don't like the argument of horror making you scared [b][i]only[/i][/b] when you can't fight back, because fighting back without using the crate exploit is still scary due to many factors (mostly related to range and the process of learning said range) and also because there are games like dead space where even when you can fight back, you really much not only prefer not to do it, but also are scared of it and the resource loss and the aiming and-- Oh right. Gotta talk about Penumbra.
The level design, labyrinthical and full of doors you will have to go through at least once, works best when being chased but since I was killing the enemies, It was very easy to notice how simplistic the level design was and go from point A to point B without much stress. By the point I was in the Iron Mine I started to get mad at how many of these "large section - lots of doors" maps there were cuz I already deciphered how to navigate them after their first appearance.[/spoiler]
These are all self inflicted issues that Frictional Games learned to avoid giving the power to do them in Amnesia which I'm glad they decided to make it a separate franchise cuz ik for a fact that if it was a sequel, there was a chance it would of have flopped.
The story and atmosphere of the game is just as good as any other frictional games game. Part of why I love their games is that they know how to tell horror stories that are [i]horrifying[/i] instead of just cruel. It's part 1 out of 3, I have not played the other games yet and while the ending of this first part was funny, I was already looking to play the trilogy so it really did not bother me.

Very effective at creating scares from virtually nothing but atmosphere and sound and you can see the solid skeletal structure of what would become greater things. As an object standing on its own it lacks variety, is somehow both over and under-written, and its puzzles can be compromised by technical issues. Solid experience even now if you can put up with the dreaded jank and are a skilled suspender of disbelief.

Изначально это была просто неплохая возможность показать, на что способен движок «HPL Engine», но искушённым игрокам это демо настолько понравилось, что «Frictional Games» решили ковать железо, пока горячо, и шведы заявили о планах выпустить полноценный проект на основе данного демо. Более того, они официально объявили, что это только первая часть и у них есть планы на полноценную трилогию. Так в 2007 году на свет появилась «Penumbra: Overture», которая готовилась как следует напугать искушённых игроков.
Если «Penumbra: Tech Demo» не имела под собой внятной сценарной основы, то в «Penumbra: Overture» уже появляется полноценная история. Главный герой игры, Филипп Лафреск, получает набор бумаг и писем от своего покойного отца Говарда Лафреска, в которых упоминается некое место в глубинах Гренландии. Филипп решает отправиться по указанным координатам, где находит старую шахту, в которой начинается классика хоррора: плотоядные монстры, зловещий шёпот в голове и мрачноватое ощущение какой-то большой неразгаданной тайны, которая ждёт где-то впереди.
Геймплейно «Penumbra» вторит всему тому, что мы неоднократно видели в других проектах схожего жанра: местный сюжет подаётся в основном через записки, враги быстро бегают за вами и больно кусают, аптечки, батареи и прочие расходники стремительно исчезают из инвентаря, а ещё здесь почти на каждом шагу встречаются головоломки, которые затягивают прохождение и заставляют игрока хорошенько напрячь мозги. Однако у игры есть кое-что уникальное, чтобы удивить геймера. В «Penumbra: Overture» реализована очень любопытная система взаимодействия с предметами — их можно взять в свои виртуальные руки, покрутить, повертеть и откинуть от себя, что создаёт своеобразный эффект тактильности. А ещё каждая встреченная вами дверь, рычаг или вентиль приводится в движение не по нажатию определённой клавиши, а с помощью зажатой левой кнопки мыши. Такое тесное взаимодействие с окружением действительно впечатляет и сильно вовлекает в игровой процесс.
Кстати, в игре есть оружие, которым можно обороняться от местных противников. И если тот же динамит используется довольно стандартно а-ля поджёг и откинул от себя подальше, то молоток или кирку как оружие ближнего боя предстоит использовать аналогично тому, как игрок взаимодействует с прочим окружением в игре. Здесь будет недостаточно просто кликнуть мышью, и каждый раз нужно вручную делать замах, зажимая уже упомянутую ЛКМ, оттягивая мышь на себя, а затем совершая резкий выпад влево, вправо или вперёд. Это выглядит довольно инновационно для жанра, но на практике такая боёвка не очень удобна, особенно если на вас нападают сразу несколько противников.
Касаемо здешней атмосферы, можно отметить, что в «Penumbra: Overture» с этим всё просто прекрасно. Движок «HPL Engine» со времён «Penumbra: Tech Demo» заметно подтянули, поэтому графика стала лучше, а игра света и тени на локациях радует глаза. Также нужно отдать должное и звуковому оформлению проекта, ведь каждый свист трубы, шорох в пещерах или чей-то вой вдали — всё это великолепно гармонирует с игровым видеорядом. Ну и музыка финского композитора Микко Тармии идеально дополняет происходящее — будь то тревожные перкуссии во время погони за протагонистом или мрачный эмбиент во время одинокого блуждания по коридорам.
Стоит упомянуть и о паре минусов, которые немного портят впечатление от игры. Во-первых, кому-то из разработчиков стукнуло в голову сделать из локаций настоящие лабиринты, в которых проще простого заблудиться. Конечно, постепенно ты втягиваешься и запоминаешь, какой поворот куда ведёт, но всё же в первые часы игры это сильно утомляет. Во-вторых, враги получились какими-то не слишком серьёзными. Да, они больно кусают, и первые встречи с пауками-переростками или одичавшими зомби-собаками действительно пугают, но их анимация и довольно дешёвые модельки порой вызывают смех. Хотя, конечно, в ходе прохождения разработчики сумеют удивить, выпустив пару раз на игрока гигантского червя, от которого остаётся только убегать, в панике матерясь. В-третьих, нельзя не отметить скудность самих локаций в плане разнообразия деталей. Вы будете стабильно лицезреть одни и те же одинаковые контейнеры, шкафы, бочки и ящики, которые быстро приедаются за время прохождения.
Несмотря на некоторые минусы, играется «Penumbra» безусловно хорошо. Игра сумеет как следует напугать в ходе прохождения, её сюжет довольно неплохо интригует и настраивает на продолжение истории, да и в целом проект действительно успевает очаровать своей атмосферой за время прохождения. Вот почему сразу после финальных титров хочется как можно скорее начать играть в сиквел или даже перепройти «Penumbra: Overture» ещё раз — а это значит, что у разработчиков, пусть и не без оговорок, но получилось создать игру, которая цепляет и не отпускает даже после прохождения.
Penumbra Overture это редкий пример игры, которая берет не скримерами, а густой почти осязаемой атмосферой безнадежности. С самого начала, когда вы оказываетесь в заснеженных пустошах Гренландии и спускаетесь в заброшенную шахту, игра дает понять вы здесь чужой, и защищаться вам нечем.
Главная особенность игры, которая выделяет её даже спустя столько лет это её физический движок. Вы не просто открываете ящики или двери нажатием кнопки, вы буквально взаимодействуете с ними, потихоньку приоткрывая створки или судорожно задвигая засовы, пока в темноте за спиной раздается рычание. Это создает невероятный уровень погружения и заставляет ладони потеть в моменты опасности.
Сюжет подается через записки и редкие радиопереговоры с загадочным Рыжим, и эта история о поиске пропавшего отца постепенно превращается в настоящий лавкрафтовский кошмар.
Да, боевая система здесь ужасна, а графика выдает возраст игры, но всё это меркнет перед тем, как мастерски проект работает со звуком и освещением.
Если вы хотите почувствовать себя беззащитным человеком в месте, которое давно забыто богом, то этот классический хоррор от создателей амнезии.

Not much to say, it's a good game, but mainly a setup for its sequel.
Spooky! Fun to see where some of the mechanics from the Amnesia series were born.
A short and flawed experience that's worth to play if you're interested in the Penumbra duology.
While it fails as a "run and hide" horror game due to combat being more viable than stealth, it's atmosphere, physics based puzzles and plot will have you engaged all the way through.
Even if Black Plague is the highlight of this series, this first entry is worth checking out.
Esse game superou todas as minhas expectativas, apesar de elas não serem muito altas, com certeza não era o que eu esperava. Por ser o título mais antigo, imaginava que sua gameplay seria extremamente insuportável e que eu teria que me forçar a aceitá-la para zerá-lo. Porém, não foi com isso que me deparei. Me impressiona que, desde sempre, a Frictional manteve uma precisão no controle do personagem, sendo algo fluido, junto a objetos com física própria que te imergem no game, além de uma história que te instiga a saber cada vez mais e mais.
Penumbra: Overture foi o marco inicial dessa empresa e, eu diria, também da evolução dos jogos de terror. Acredito que, na época em que foi criado, os desenvolvedores não imaginavam o quão relevante ele seria para o futuro. Recomendo demais esse jogo, não apenas por ser muito bom, mas pela história que carrega como um marco no mundo dos games.
This is the first game by Frictional Games, a studio that made a name for itself for the first-person horror games like Penumbra series, Amnesia series, and SOMA.
This game takes place in an abandoned mine. You proceed through it while avoiding some hostile creatures and environmental dangers, and learning about what happened there through various notes / diaries.
Gameplay-wise it's mostly an inventory / environment-based adventure game: to proceed to the next area you need to find some items that you use to solve some puzzles, or find and turn on some lever, etc.
There are some situations where there are enemies, and you can either use stealth to avoid them, or you can actually kill them. This part of the gameply is pretty weak and doesn't really add much to the game.
The atmosphere (visual, aural) is pretty nice, it makes you feel pretty claustrophobic at times, and the feeling of crushing solitude is also very strong. And hearing another living person's voice at some point in the game really spices it up.
Additionally, the story beats you encounter have some paranormal side to them, but the game doesn't go into detailed exposition, so you're always left guessing, what the hell happened there.
The "horror" element of the game lies mostly in the atmosphere, there are no cheap jumpscares which are popular in modern smaller horror games.
The game is pretty short, takes only a couple of hours to complete.
Ultimately I'd recommend this to people who liked Amnesia / SOMA, to people who aren't averse to older titles, for people who'd like to spend an evening or two on an nice atmospheric horror game.
As a fan of Amesia: The Dark Descent, Penumbra Overture offers pretty much the same experience as its three-year follow-up successor. Everything from the presentation of the visuals to the sound design of the ambience and haunting bleakness and drabness of the world to the wonderfully utilized music that perfectly elevates key moments in the game that make it that much more memorable, was superbly well done by a relatively small team back in the day. The puzzles have to be completed in a way where you have to actually think realistically outside the game logic that games like this usually impose on players. This isn't a game where combat is necessarily the key selling point, because it's clunky and awkward, and that's okay! The game isn't about fighting, and you have to do your best to avoid fighting at all costs. Even if the combat annoys you that much, I think the game delivers on everything else very well so that you'll be into it regardless of that, because it's just a neat, short little game. Well done Frictional, I'm excited to see and check out your other games after The Dark Descent.

With the gameplay being the stepping stones for Amnesia the Dark Descent.
Personally enjoyed this one a lot. I got it from the Frictional Collection bundle which I bought for the bunker and rebirth however getting these from it as well is honestly fantastic!

Amazing and also many times annoying from the difficulty of figuring out the puzzles, nonetheless a fantastic horror mystery game with a Source Engine Half Life 2 styling gameplay and graphics. This game will get you stumped many times so expect a decent challenge.

Сначала просто взрывался мозг от того, насколько здесь всё иммерсивно: каждый шкафчик нужно открывать вручную, ящики можно крутить и двигать — к такому после обычных игр нужно привыкнуть, но погружение нереальное. Сюжет очень загадочный, и хотя в первой части деталей маловато, интрига сохраняется до конца. Звуки и музыка добавляют жути, так что постоянно находишься в напряжении, даже когда врагов нет рядом. Если любите вдумчивые и атмосферные хорроры, проходить обязательно.

1. Геймплей - 8 хорошие головоломки, но немного однообразный геймплей
2. Графика - 7 очень хорошая свето-тень особенно для 2007. текстуры не очень, но терпимо
3. Сюжет - 7 (на момент прохождения 1 части) достаточно хорош, есть переломный момент.
4. Управление - 9 очень крутая идея объединить управление из классических квестов и обычной 3д игры
5. Звук и музыка - 6 хорошая, но однообразная
6. Оптимизация - 8 удивлён как она поместилась менее чем в 1,5 гигабайта
7. Интерфейс - 7 удобно, интуитивно понятно, но не слишком красиво
8. Реиграбельность - 3 переиграть просто чтобы переиграть
9. Оригинальность - 10 первый стелс-хоррор в современном понимании
10. Баланс - 9 не слишком легко но и не слишком сложно. игра даёт подсказки в самые нужные моменты
11. Продолжительность - 8 даже для первой части немного коротковата
12. развитие игры - 6 в основном портирование на другие ОП и открытие исходного кода
13. Иммерсивность - 6 быстро привыкаешь к хоррор элементам
14. Инновации - 10 (см 9)
15. Общее впечатление - 7 свою задумку создатели как по мне не воплотилили, но головоломки всё-таки очень хороши.

Id probably only recommend this game just to set up the (presumably better) second game. The story is somewhat interesting but not enough to really overcome the lack of scares, repetitive and clunky combat, tedious backtracking, uninteresting puzzles, etc.
This game clearly shows the potential that frictional had and would expand upon, but by itself i dont see much reason to play it over their other games.

Каждый проект разработчиков это попытка прыгнуть выше головы, но сейчас мы рассматриваем через призму первого их детища.
Penumbra, сколько раз слышал, это легенда, которую стоит пройти, да и отзывы на эту игру выше всех похвал.
Пройдя Amnesia, хочется проникнуться большим творчеством представителей психологического хоррора от мастодонтов, которые съели на этом собаку.
И с таким настроем запускается Overture. Начинается все спокойно и в стилистике разработчиков, но после мы попадаем на одну большую локацию, сходи туда, забери что-то, чего не знаешь сам, вернись, пройди в другую комнату, сделай всё тоже самое, потом пойди в третье место, там подшамань и перейди на другую большую локацию с повторением прошлого.
Из противников держи волков и паучков, но чтобы от них можно было уйти, держи оружие и начинай махаться, что убивает весь хоррор.
Дабы разнообразить это всё, разработчики завезли свою механику дерни, потрогай, потряси, перенеси и это помогает игре не скатываться в уныние под названием ходьба, а также разговор (монолог) Рыжего, который сгущает краски.
Не могу сказать, что игра меня разочаровала, но это явно не то, что я ожидал от "легендарной пенумбры", про которую все говорят.
Но головоломки действительно ломают голову и тупишь очень долго, куда пойти, что открыть, что взять с собой.

Not really scary, puzzles aren't especially difficult, combat is clunky, but graphics are not bad. Story is sorta interesting and the interactive-ness of most items is fun to play around with. Otherwise, kinda boring. I found the prevalence of signs and maps in every area to be an odd choice, maybe I'm missing some story related reason there, but they made the regions only harder to navigate. Red and his voice acting were really good though, the most entertaining part of the game.
Ok. You can feel the birth of what was to become Amnesia here but the pointless combat and lack of interesting enemies kills a lot of tension after the initial few encounters.

É o primeiro jogo da Frictional Sigma Games. Esse Overture na verdade é o primeiro terço de Penumbra. É curto, não é chato, mas é um jogo antigo, pode não te pegar.

Old but story-rich game. An example of mechanics for new games with such ideas. One of my first time playing horror/thriller puzzle games, and i must say that i can recommend it. It's short-to-medium in gameplay time, in some parts of the game you'll get annoyed but if you want a game that doesn't act like you're a 5-year old kid that needs tips in every corner, it does the work.
Very immersive due to how it plays and looks. the interactable surrounding objects and carefully crafted environment are impressive for a horror game this old.
The slow story build up through notes and dialogue, gradually pointing toward a larger mystery left me intrigued and excited to play the sequel. it's also fairly short, which was refreshing.
However, survival is far too easy even on "Hard". Enemy AI is nearly blind if you're crouching, and i ended the game with an inventory full of painkillers, dynamite, and other unused supplies. Despite that, the environmental design carries the experience, and the game is overall quite enjoyable.

Представьте: вы один в ледяной безлюдной шахте. Воздух гудит от сквозняка в трубах, металл скрипит, а с вами говорит только безумец в рации. Penumbra: Overture - это шедевр атмосферы и тактильного страха. Здесь страшно не от прыжков, а от полного одиночества в лабиринте индустриальных коридоров и пещер.
Мир здесь не декорация - его можно пощупать. Каждый шкаф, каждый рычаг, каждый камень подчиняется физике. Вы чувствуете вес предметов, которые толкаете. Эта осязаемость - главная магия игры, которая перекрывает даже немного потешные бои с местной "фауной". Идея отвлекать монстров предметами интересна, но на деле они настолько глупы, что проще (и безопаснее) либо просто оббежать их, либо забраться на возвышение, став для них неуязвимой мишенью.
Увы, вся эта магия рушится на финише. Разработчики, кажется, кончились на последнем рывке. Во-первых, я словил проблему того, что у меня не все предметы помещались в инвентаре. Это очень подпортило впечатление от финального пазла, поскольку мне пришлось несколько раз бегать от одной локации к другой, т.к не мог взять все предметы.
Во-вторых... дурацкий пазл в конце. Не хочется его спойлерить, но я прошёл его банальным перебором. Если вы не разбираетесь в химии, наверняка проходить его будете перебором.
А сам финал... Это забавный момент с "пеплом", коридор и глупый твист. Видимо к этому моменту деньги у разработчиков закончились. Хотелось бы завершения уровня вступительной кат-сцены.
Несмотря на сомнительный финал первой Пенумбры, это обязательное прохождение для ценителей атмосферных хорроров. 7/10 - за гениальную первую половину пути, за физику, которая до сих пор впечатляет, и за то одиночество, которое вы не забудете. Следующая часть исправит недостатки этой игры, хоть и потеряет в своей атмосфере, встав на более клишированные тропы.

A história acompanha Philip, um físico que viaja à Groenlândia após a morte da mãe e explora uma mina abandonada. O clima de tensão e inimigos que não podem ser vencidos com combate é um diferencial que marca todos os jogos desses desenvolvedores. Depois de entender melhor a ideia eu aprendi a gostar.
