Hack n slash action platformer drenched of a thick 80s Saturday cartoon smell. The movement is somewhat slippery and there is some mechanical bloat in the attack pool, but there is a lot of fun to be had with the different abilities and overall the combats pretty satisfying. The story was heartwarming, but the ending was a bit abrupt and underwhelming. I’d recommend getting it on a sale instead of full price for the length of the game is relatively brisk, with no real difficulty spikes or extra/side content at all.

A short game that you can finish within 7-8 hours if you play leisurely. I really like the concept of the game, however I feel like the gameplay is a bit simple and the enemies/bosses isn't that challenging.

On MacOS this game crashes at startup and I had to run a terminal command found in the community hub to get it running. Total BS baloney stuff.

I wish I hadn't bothered with that though. This game is boring. Too much reading, the story is nonsense, the gameplay is not fun and I'm running around in circles trying to figure out where to go next. Obviously the creator thinks they're very clever. Well good for you, I hate your dumb game.

This game is a bit strange, particularly in the language used. But I found myself fully immersed in it. It's a side scrolling, pixel animated ninja style adventure with multiple boss fights. Although I did find the last couple of boss fights particularly frustrating, I enjoyed playing this game overall. I expect I will return to it again one day.

This game is entertaining, but it would've landed way better with me were the writing not so monotonous and self-serious. I enjoy lore-diving into fictional universes, but every. single. character here speaks in the same tired preachy tone. Paragraphs of it! Completely straight-faced! Not a speck of variety in sentence length, emotional delivery, vocab. At first I latched onto the cutesy techy lexicon peppered across the world, but it grew stale after a while. By the Blue Region I just started auto-skipping.

The fights are fun. The art style is gorgeous. The writing is abhorrent.

Narita Boyyyyyyy. Save the World!

Not a bad little game, the visuals and music can be amazing at times. The combat gives you lots of powerups as you go along as well as sections where you ride a horse or control a mech which is good to change things up.

I will say that sometimes there are elements in the forescreen which cover up enemy attacks which is very frustrating, and some enemies feel spongier than they should, especially the flying ones. Some of the powerups just give you a different colour to swap to which makes it easier to kill enemies but I don't think it works that well, especially as you cannot instantly switch between them in any given situation. The baseball bat powerup as well I hardly used because charging it up was very inconsistant.

The boss fights themselves were a bit hit or miss imo, some were very fun but others were just a waiting game to let the boss do their thing then put in a few hits while they rest or, in some cases, wind up for a big attack. Some of these bosses do not telegraph their attacks well enough meaning dodging is hard and relies mostly on you learning what moves they are going to do next, which in the case of the final boss is impossible as he will just constantly change up movements.

The story itself is mostly tecnobabble but can be very charming in how Tron inspired the whole thing is, and the many references to other popular 80s movies and games were fun.

If graphics, sound, and general atmosphere were the only thing that mattered in a game, this would get a 10/10. Unfortunately, there are other aspects to a game, and this definitely fails.

Narita Boy does what many see as a “positive”, but I see as a total “negative”: it drops you into the game with little direction or explanation, and just expects you to go. I walked around for too long with no idea what I was supposed to do, what my goal was, or if I was even supposed to go in a particular direction.

I found my first progress point by sheer accident, and afterwards, I had no idea what I was supposed to do to continue on. At a bare minimum, this game needs some sort of map, so the player has some idea where in the world they are.

It took a solid hour until I reached a point of mental frustration, that made me rage quit and uninstall, and quietly decide to never pick up this game again. If it hadn’t been sitting in my backlog for a while, I would’ve asked for a refund. Alas, the best I can do is remind myself I bought for very cheap.

Gameplay wise, there’s platforming, and some limited combat. Nothing special. As I said, the aesthetics are world class, but that’s the only positive I can list.

Narita Boy es un juego difícil de describir. Es un juego que se tiene que experimentar, no precisamente por lo excelente que es, aunque es muy bueno. Es difícil encajarlo en un género, hablar de su historia o mencionar sus fallos si no se viven en un primer momento. Pero eso voy a intentar hacer, porque Narita Boy es un juego que se lo merece.

Narita Boy nos presenta una mezcla de géneros diferentes: por una parte, es un metroidvania a muy pequeña escala, con algunos coleccionables que hay que conseguir para progresar y con diferentes habilidades que vamos desbloqueando. Este apartado está muy bien, porque realmente se mide bastante y no se hace pesado pero hay un problema: no existe ningún mapa en todo el juego. Esto a mí no se me ha hecho molesto, pero entiendo que podría hacer perder bastante tiempo a mucha gente y es un añadido fácil. También nos presenta un combate muy bueno y sorprendente, que aunque al principio se ve bastante reducido, se le van añadiendo mecánicas que lo hacen mejor.

Las boss-fights de este juego son de lo mejor del mismo. Todas están muy bien y tienen la dificultad perfecta para no desesperar pero no ser absurdamente fáciles. Una cosa también que me ha gustado mucho son las habilidades que desbloqueas a lo largo de la aventura. Aunque haya muchas que son cosas necesarias, hay otras que son el centro de secciones enteras del mapa o de zonas concretas y que son muy buenas. No quiero hacer spoiler, porque hay que experimentarlo de verdad. Pero ojo, el juego tarda en arrancar, y esos primeros ratos se pueden hacer un poco pesados, supongo que por la limitación que existe en el moveset, pero si se superan esos 40 minutos, disfrutas de todo.

Audiovisualmente es donde más destaca el juego. El pixel-art es de otro nivel, con unas animaciones increíbles y un diseño de zonas, enemigos, bosses y sobre todo personajes excelente. Es un juego que sin duda entra por los ojos. La música también está súper bien, sobre todo por la ambientación que le da al juego.

Narrativamente es una rallada y tenéis que verlo por vosotros mismos (cosa que pasa en mucho indie a día de hoy), así que termino diciendo que Narita Boy es un juego bastante bueno, que tampoco destaca muchísimo pero que lo que hace, lo hace bastante bien. Si no tenéis nada que jugar y os apetece algo cortito pero con miga, lo recomiendo sin dudas.

The visuals and soundtrack are really cool, but there is just way too much backtracking and confusion about where to go. I spent so much time going from screen to screen, only to realize I’d missed a tiny step I was supposed to jump on. It’s just not for me. it feels like a massive time sink unless you’re using a guide. Otherwise, the game mechanics are solid. Ran well on a Steamdeck.

O clima e ambientação do jogo sem dúvidas é o seu ponto mais alto, o game traz um universo próprio que eu adorei.
A única coisa que não me agradou muito é o fato de entrar e sair de ambiente várias vezes tendo que fazer o backtrack, o problema é que da forma que foi feito, fica um pouco confuso.

Improve the levels so that it doesn't look a little confusing and it will be a great game like each flopdisk should have a clear symbol and the same symbol on the same panel. Sure you will never get lost but it feels that way for some reason.

Guten Tag werte Menschen des Internetz,

Das Game sieht super aus und hat eine spaßige alte Hausgemachte Grafik des 80Style dennoch bin ich maßgeblich enttäuscht das es KEINE MINIMAP gibt ODER auch KEINEN WEGWEIßER wo man hinlaufen soll. Ich besaß das Schwert und habe einen sogenannten Schlüssel bekommen und jetzt will das Videospiel das ich wo anders hingehen muss aber WO soll denn das sein?
Ich denke für dieses Spiel bin ich zu dumm und vielleicht schaue ich irgendwann nochmal rein. Es gibt Spiele die auch ähnlich aufgebaut sind in 2D und dies funktioniert meistens weil die aufgebaut sind das man den Weg findet. SEIT nicht wie ich!

Well, here we are.

15 hours into the game and i have officially beat it 1 and a half times, only re-ran the game again on a new save file up to the red world as i forgot to grab 4 achievements on the way out but regardless, very enjoyable game, it was definitely worth its price tag and it kept me interested all the way through, i really like the retro feel and simplistic fighting controls using a controller, my only true and honest complaints is that near the end of the game it does start to get a little repetitive when it comes to mini boss fights / main boss fights, i get its the end of the game but i mean i just personally found it almost too much but needless to say, great work Studio Koba.

A wonderfully nostalgic experience.
I personally don't resonate as much with the retro style the game emulates, but the vibes are strong regardless.
I feel the strongest part of the game is between the narrative and the combat, combat evolves alongside the character very nicely and the narrative grows alongside the world you find yourself in. The many secrets of Narita Boy we're very nicely hidden, requiring backtracking in most cases to find symbols and remember locked areas you'd need to return to before leaving an area for good. This aspect is what probably frustrated me the most, as I would've enjoyed going back to previous areas to utilize new skills to help flesh out some of the puzzles a bit more. Regardless, the self-contained nature of each area is very well crafted and again, the secrets are incredibly tough to figure out.

A highlight in my opinion has to be the bosses, they're well placed and extremely unique to each area. Very fun to fight against.

If you enjoy a well-crafted, passion heavy project in the retro 80s theme, a RPG platformer with fairly linear progression and tough secrets which overall aid the somber narrative, then I recommend Narita Boy. My initial playthrough probably took somewhere between 4-5 hours, and the return trip to collect the rest of the secrets through a second playthrough between 2-3.

first 30-40% of the game is above average fun. But I have never seen more boring and uninteresting fight than the last 2 bosses of this game, it's not fun to push the same hit button 3000 times during a fight and repeat same patterns for 3000 times until the boss is dead. Not recommend to people who value their time. The last 2 hours of the game you just want it to finally end, but it doesn't sending upon you encounters that you have seen already 100s of times. And those bossfights, especially the last one. I wish I never played the last 30 minutes of the game. I am dropping the game on maybe 99% of progress. It's awful game design at the end. Delete that part of the game or make that bossfight a symbolic one hit, one shot or something, people will appreciate that I am sure. Visuals and animations are good, platforming is terrible, the last part of level design is awful, backtracking is meh. 2/5

So I guess I didn't enjoy this game as much as other people because this is a kind of retro modern game? But the level design was pretty bad, many times I didn't know where to go, going to multiple places back and forth without finding anything. Even movement and combat weren't handled well for me, platforming was pretty awful because of the movement and combat was a bit frustrating because of all the effects on screen. This game feels highly underrated to me. The developers surely have put a lot of effort into making this game. The visuals are amazing, and the soundtracks are good as well. I really liked the ideas behind the Digital Kingdom and the game's story. The combat is quite simple, despite having many different types of enemies and power-ups, yet still enjoyable. I wish the game had better support for ultrawide resolution, though. Right now it makes the image wider instead of increasing the viewport.

Overall a great game with a few minor problems. Art style is incredible, very, very unique - carries the game and honestly makes it worth playing just to experience the world they’ve build.

The fighting and movement isn’t as challenging as other reviews let on. You get used to it pretty quick.

Biggest issues for me were no map and inability to revisit previous areas. You’ll get lost a fair bit trying to figure out where to bring the floppy disks. A map would be an easy quality of life fix. And for someone who wants to 100% the game, if you miss a secret area, and progress to the next part of the game, there’s no way to go back. Disappointing.

7/10 game - worth it to experience the art.

I wasn't able to resonate with NB's more direct, world-merging storytelling, with a specific villain, allegories unmasked, and the rather sincere heroism. At the same time, I failed to enjoy many of the action scenes, and as I’m rather sensitive to all the screen-flashing that can’t be dialed down, I was getting overwhelmed, turning the game off quite often. But always eager to return.

It’s clear to me that NB is likely the best looking and best sounding games I’ve ever played. Some small details tied to the backgrounds, especially in the first half of the game, showcase both pointless and charming dioramas - astonishing, yet sufficiently vague for my tastes. Pseudo-nature, temples, weird-ass characters, gorgeous combination of retrofuturism with fantasy-tasting sacrum and dignity, while also not avoiding a sprinkle or two of humor.

I especially enjoyed the stereotypical “robot voices” added to various characters as a tiny addition to their visual presentation. And the animations, like the dancing one, or the one where your character prays...

Man, what a cute piece of art.

Narita Boy is an awesome action-adventure game that really pulls you in with good combat, a great story and some of the best pixel art you will find in a game.

The first thing I want to talk about is combat. You gain a good variety of combat moves, many of which also double as movement options. Enemy design is well done and often requires you to use all these different moves to even beat some of them. That goes for boss fights as well which for the most part are an all round good time, especially once you get farther into the game.

The story feels nice and is primarily told as a core mechanic of the game as you collect memories for the guy who made the digital world you are exploring. I always wanted to know more and was getting it slowly fed to me as I went, making for a very satisfying feeling. That mixed with the really well done world building made the world great fun to run around in. I will say that it feels a lot like Tron even though I do not know much about its lore.

The look of this game is astonishing. The pixel graphics are amazingly good with some scenes leaving me saying wow and thinking back to them weeks and months after the fact. The sprite design and animations are awesome with so much variety in enemies and NPCs. I love a good looking game and this one is by far one of the best.

I almost forgot about the music but decided to come back and add this. The music in this game is phenomenal. I will definitely be picking up the soundtrack at some point and think that it may even be worth picking up without playing the game if you just like music.

I had a ton of fun with Narita Boy and am looking forward to trying out more games by these devs for sure. I strongly recommend people to play this game and think that it really deserves more attention.

Narita Boy is a cool and distinctive game that combines dynamic action and an engaging story with puzzles based on exploring locations. In each area, you need to find keys to unlock closed doors and advance. During my first playthrough, I got a little lost a couple of times (there is no map in the game), but everything is fairly easy overall.

The visuals are impressive. It's clear that the artists put in a lot of work, with high-quality sprites, vibrant and detailed environments, and smooth animations.

The soundtrack is a rich retro synthwave, which is sometimes rhythmic and sometimes calm and soft, but always deep and seamlessly integrated into the narrative. Huge respect to composer Salvinsky.

The sound design is also top-notch — the dangerous mobs sound exactly like massive mechanised 'tin cans' with claws.

The combat system is excellent. Each enemy has its own well-crafted set of moves, while you have a dash, a dodge, an uppercut (which, in some situations, uses as a double jump), a charged attack in the style of Cyclops from X-Men, a semi-charged attack (a kind of shotgun blast), a powerful ground slam and buffs that deal high damage to specific enemy types, but which reduce your defence against them. In short, there’s plenty of room for strategy.

Cons. The game contains a lot of text and is only available in English. Some of non-native speakers will found it challenging to keep up with the narrative.

The game has definitely made it to my list of favourite pixel art games. It has a unique atmosphere and a distinctive blend of cyberpunk, Western and East Asian pop cultures. Over the course of two evenings, I played the game twice: the first time for general exploration and the second time to collect the missed achievements.

Un muy buen metroidvania, pero tengo algunos problemas aunque me gusta bastante, las mecanicas se explican muy bien y son muy interesantes, pero ni intentes hacer esto en teclado porque es confuso los botones que eligieron, terminas usando toda una linea del teclado, ademas hay mucho retroceso, y partes que se sienten como que se podian saltear y que no habia razon para que existieran ya que solo te daban las llaves para otras partes, asi que no entiendo porque no solo te daban esa llave y ya. Pero bueno, es minimo todo eso, la historia es muy entretenida el gameplay esta bien diseñado, el soundtrack es una maravilla y espero que hagan una secuela en el futuro.

Es un juego excelente. A nivel visual, a nivel musical, todo en cuanto a arte es una verdadera maravilla. En cuanto a gameplay es cierto que al inicio se hace un poco cuesta arriba y se siente un pelín limitado, pero en el momento que consigues unas cuantas habilidades, es fluido y divertidísimo. ¿Por qué no tiene una mejor puntuación? Porque literalmente termina con "Continuará" y me cabrean bastante ese tipo de juegos a no ser que yo tenga claro desde el principio que la historia no va a estar completa (véase sagas como Trails o la trilogía de Final Fantasy VII Remake, Rebirth y su futuro tercer título).

Maybe its just me but when there's puzzles in a game that isn't a puzzle game, I can't do it. An action packed game isn't supposed to have puzzles. If I want puzzles I buy strategy games. If I want a story I read a book or watch a movie or an anime. Maybe I got filtered after 15 minutes of playing. I just can't do it with these puzzles in action games. Maybe that appeals to a small minority of gamers that are unemployed.

I played this game for 5 hours however don't have any urge to pick it up again.

The music is good, it is visually appealing which may have left me disappointed however the constant backtracking is monotonous and the dull storyline is just one extra thing wrong.

The pvp and movement is fine but you get them all at the start so I feel there is little development throughout the game and even then its mid at best.

I haven't finished the game, but I am thoroughly enjoying the adventure! Boss fights are too hard and discouraging, I love the cyberpunk, vintage/retro vibe, and I think it is very innovative how the creator seemingly weaves his life story into the game. I feel like when I finish this game, I won't replay it, however, it will become one of my favorites and one to remember. Definitely recommend if you like a medium-paced, paradoxical, story-driven game with pixel graphics, chill soundtrack, and overall a fun but chill experience! Thank you for the game!

O que me chamou atenção logo de cara foram os gráficos em pixe art retrô. Algo que não tinha experimentado até então e também a introdução do jogo ao reino digital. Senti como se fosse jogar um "Tron: O Legado" o que me deixou ainda mais animado. A proposta é fácil de entender desde o início. 10/10

- Narrativa:

Apresenta uma narrativa bem fora da curva. Acabei sendo pego de surpresa com a exploração do mundo digital e a apresentação de como seus habitantes vêem o código como se fosse algo divino. Na minha opinião o jogo foi muito original em sua abordagem.

A história é bem envolvente, o que me faz torcer o nariz é que recorrentemente o jogo nos lembra que o Narita Boy é o "herói do tricroma", "o salvador do mundo digital" e afins. Achei meio chato ser chamado de herói por cada NPC que falava comigo.

O único personagem com profundidade é o criador do mundo digital. O jogo parece meio raso nesse quesito. Até mesmo o Narita Boy parece raso. Ele nem mesmo tem diálogos. Somente vai e faz o que tem que ser feito.

O Ritmo da narrativa é bom. Nem arrastado nem acelerado. Mas a ambientação do jogo compensa bastante a falta de narrativa. 8/10

- Gráficos e Arte:

O estilo de pixel art retrô é muito caprichado e bonito. Você sente o carinho que foi colocado nesse jogo em cada animação; em cada inimigo; em cada elemento do jogo e em cada background. Tudo é bem feito nesse game quanto ao gráfico.

O visual combina bastante com a proposta do game. Além disso, não identifiquei nenhum bug visual, o que mostra que o jogo foi bem polido. 10/10

- Mecânicas e Gameplay:

jogo é muito divertido de se jogar. As mecânicas são simples e satisfatórias.

Apesar de ser um jogo plataforma, a variedade de inimigos e a forma ideal de acabar com cada um deles faz o jogo não cair na repetição.

Não há muito a se fazer além de andar pelo mapa e acabar com inimigos e resolver alguns poucos puzzles. Mas isso não acaba sendo demérito.

Além disso, a dificuldade do game é justa. Se você aprender a usar bem as mecânicas que o jogo ensina, não terá dores de cabeça após mapear os golpes dos bosses. 10/10

- Som e trilha sonora:

Sinceramente, o ponto mais forte do jogo após os gráficos. As músicas de abertura e fechamento do jogo são tão boas e viciantes que eu adicionei no Spotify (nunca fui de ouvir música de jogo). O ar de "synthwave" das faixas são incríveis e combinam muito com a proposta do game.

Os efeitos sonoros de alta qualidade ajudam a imergir no game. Por ser um jogo em pixel, eu esperava aqueles sons característicos da era 16 bits. Mas fui surpreendido por uma trilha sonora sensacional. 10/10

- Veredito:

O jogo é excelente. Se tu curte jogos plataforma, atmosfera cyber e uma boa trilha sonora pode apostar que Narita Boy será uma ótima escolha.

Ele não tem o fator replay. Então, vá de peito aberto para aproveitar o máximo da experiência desde a primeira jogada.

Narita Boy es una aventura de acción con estética retro que nos sumerge en un universo digital lleno de luces de neón y una narrativa que mezcla lo místico con lo tecnológico.

La primera impresión puede resultar lenta y sus mecánicas, aunque interesantes, no terminan de desplegarse hasta pasado un buen rato. Los primeros bosses se presentan como sencillos y poco versátiles, lo que resume su experiencia en pulsar el botón de ataque y alguna esquiva.

Sin embargo, una vez que la historia coge ritmo, es fácil quedar atrapado por la atmósfera única, el apartado artístico deslumbrante y la música synthwave que le da una identidad inconfundible.

Es una pena porque con un buen pulido en el combate y mecánicas podría haber llegado mucho más lejos.

The art style was the main hook for this game and I'd say it made good on that promise, unfortunately it underdelivered in most other aspects.

The game doesn't feel responsive enough for the fights, the story isn't presented in a way that makes it interesting, navigation feels like a mess, it has way too many mechanics ("power-ups") for what it actually demands with only the occasional need for any of them, otherwise you just sail by on the basic moves and timing.

If you're really interested in the art style get it when it's discounted down to no more than $10, the most I'd think it's worth spending on it given what you can get from its regular price of $25.

Klasyczna platformówko-bijatyka w bardzo oryginalnym wydaniu. Mocno stylizowana na lata 80te i ówczeną wizję cyfrowego świata. Pixelartowa grafika jest dosyć oryginalna, choć w kilku momentach niezbyt czytelna. Jednym się spodoba, innym nie. Muzyka to esencja sythwave'owych klimatów lat 80tych. Gameplay jest dynamiczny, sterowanie responsywne (zalecam granie na padzie). Niektóre dłuższe starcia mogą irytować, ale to detal.

Overall, a good game that is a bit rough around the edges in terms of polish and gameplay.
The worldbuilding is particularly solid and enjoyable in my opinion. The gameplay can feel a bit flat at times. A lot of its ideas, concepts, and moves feel pretty solid; but the overall cohesion and movement can feel a bit lacking at times. I don't necessarily mind how straightforward the game can be. Not every game needs to be a sprawling, endless metroidvania. But this game does not give you very much to explore in terms of bonus areas and fun details, which I feel could've really strongly benefited a game with such good world design. Another key issue being the inability to back track. For the most part, you cannot go back to areas you have always progressed. This means you cannot go back to complete the couple of secret achievements and such if you miss it the first time. I wanted to go back and complete what I would assume is the true ending after beating the game, but that save file was left right before the final cutscene with no way to return back to where I needed to go. This is a small detail for a game like this, but it is a detail that can feel so bad if done wrong.
The art direction is very fun and consistently stylized, and the music is great.

This is one of those games I feel guilty for not liking. The presentation is top notch, the pixel art looks fantastic and the soundtrack is excellent. On the surface, it has everything I should enjoy.

But while playing, I just felt… empty. I think I was simply bored. There’s style and polish here, but it didn’t grab me, and I have no desire to start it up again.

It’s a shame, because I feel like I should love this game - but I don’t.

Game started good - plot and visual with Tron vibe, amazing soundtrack. Platforming and combat are barely passable, but I could put up with it, but then it started the bad part - bosses. I can't describe exactly what is bad, may be their short time frame of vulnerability with attack pattern which leave little space for escape, but usually i don't have problem with this. May be that, combining with the fact that combat is not fun, so every replay is a chore, yes, but also bosses feels like they are from horror game, not from what the game shown initially. Then i started to notice increasing amount of religous symbolism, which contrary to the beginning, which i thought that build philosophical atmosphere, now it started to feel annoying and empty as if developer wanted to be as much loud as possible but didn't have respect to what he is refering. So i looked up in Steam discussions to understand, what will await for me further. Find out, that for the game which require collection of some items for complete ending - there is not a backpath to previous zone, you missed something, you would not get this thing later. Also i found out about what the plot is and as i started to suspect, it's nothing connected to the Tron atmosphere, to the good atmosphere, it's about something ugly, i'm glad to delete this game and the save file.
