This game has stuck with me since I played it. A terrifying atmosphere, with a beautiful art style. A refreshing tone for a horror piece, both claustrophobic and airy and open. The wide open spaces are gorgeous, but the pencil art style still manages to make you feel boxed in. An excellent story, fantastic mechanics. Truly a quiet and unsettling gem of a game.

It’s been a few years since I’ve played this, but I feel compelled to leave a review since it’s still both underappreciated and one of the first things that comes to mind when I think of interesting modern horror games. My thoughts at the time were that it feels like the spirit of a good point-and-click adventure game translated into 3D - that is, a tad clunky and at times obtuse, but with a very well-realized (and unique) setting and narrative. The visuals are obviously the most striking element, but the local culture and folklore embedded in the story are what really sold me on it.

The only real issues I recall were a handful of fairly minor bugs, but nothing that soured the experience much. In any case, highly recommended for folk horror fans or just anyone looking for a unique adventure game through the lens of a culture they’re almost certainly not familiar with.

This is a unique game, but the camera movement is very sensitive. I can't play the game without getting physically sick and wanting to throw up. If you have no problem with that, this is still a fairly old school game where the clues is quite cryptic to figure out. I wonder if they tested the game and actually implement the inputs from the testers, especially the camera movement. Probably will try this again sometime later, but for now I'll just watch the gameplay in youtube.

En lineas generales Mundaun esta bastante bien para ser del genero, un poco lento pero con momentos que atrapan.

Lo que mas tira para atras la experiencia son los enemigos de la primer zona y principio de la segunda. Son enemigos injustos, aburridos de combatir, y agregaria que ni siquiera tienen sentido en la historia. Estan ahi solamente para alargar artificialmente la primera parte.

De resto, recomendable si te gustan los juegos narrativos.

Como falar desse jogo sem comentar primeiro sobre seu estilo artístico? Que jogo lindo. Ele sempre me chamou atenção justamente pela arte, e foi ela que realmente me vendeu essa experiência.

A ambientação e a sensação de estranheza que ele transmite funcionam muito bem. Tudo parece desconfortável na medida certa, criando uma atmosfera única. Os puzzles são legais e agradáveis de resolver, e a história é boa e intrigante. O jogo vai te dando pistas ao longo do caminho, e quando você chega ao final já tem uma ideia do que pode ter acontecido para solucionar o mistério, mas isso não tira o impacto da jornada.

No fim, é um jogo que se destaca principalmente pela identidade própria e pela atmosfera marcante.

You're a young'un that's been given a sad news of a passing relative, your grandfather. You visit him on a small town where you grew up in BUT everything's all wrong.

PROS
+ A very unique pastel-like art style that is the highlight of the game. Game zooms in on pictures, mirrors, and other interactable portraits that transforms it into a whole new horror. At times, I felt like I was in a painting.
+ It combines psychological horror into a light survival horror since you can pretty much skip combat 90% of the time.
+ Atmosphere is also one of the Mundaun's highlight where you feel dread right at the start. Everything feels off.
+ Story is really good too. Come to think of it, you can't really have good horror with a poorly written story. No really big twists but the story hooks as soon as you set foot in the game. It's a bit on the short side though.
+ The game has 4 endings and gives you instances of making choices; it's a sandbox with hubs where you can explor while you complete tasks inside your journal.
+ Music and sound effects are great. Combines a lot of swedish folk in there that makes it beautiful as well as dreadful at the same time.

Была проблема в самом конце. Никак не мог одолеть главное зло игры. Путем упорного желания это преодолеть, откатился назад на несколько сохранений и прошел по новой, предприняв иные действия, чтобы баг исчез. Видимо я там попросту нарушил скрипт.

Больше всего в игре мне понравилась рисовка. Она прям превосходная и очень здорово выглядит. Глаза радовались при каждом запуске.
Сюжет отличный, залипательный. В процессе прохождения меня только пару раз подглючило и пришлось серьезно пораскинуть серым веществом.
Игру советую всем.

Mundaun est un jeu d’artiste avec des textures et des modèles entièrement dessinées au crayon, puis modélisées en 3D. Un projet passion, un développement de 7 ans dans lequel le dév. aura mis beaucoup de sa vie. Ce rendu visuel unique avec sa teinte sépia apporte une saveur nostalgique particulière.

Mundaun n’est pas vraiment un jeu d’horreur mais plutôt un conte horrifique basé sur le folklore de cette bourgade du canton des Grisons, dans les Alpes suisses. Entièrement doublé en Romanche, l’idiome local, pour une immersion totale (une très belle langue en voie de disparition).

Il aurait pu être un simple walking simulator qu’il aurait déjà été très bon, mais il va beaucoup plus loin en incorporant des mécaniques de survival surprenamment poussée pour un projet de ce genre. A certains moments de l’aventure, quand la nuit tombe, les monstres errent librement et il faut tenter de s’infiltrer ou user de l’environnement pour s’en débarrasser (ex: en mettant le feu a des bottes de paille qui vont propager les flammes pour cramer les ennemis). Il est même possible de se défendre en dernier recours avec des armes rudimentaires, malgré le système de peur qui empêche une approche trop frontale. Ce n’est pas un simple jeu de cache-cache.

La progression se fait dans une poignée de zones certes pas très grandes mais brillamment construites et qui recèlent de choses à découvrir. L'équilibre entre l’exploration libre et le dirigisme des objectifs est parfaitement dosé et n'étouffe jamais le joueur. Le backtracking n’est jamais chiant car facilité par des raccourcis et l’ensemble est d’une cohérence visuelle et ludique qui force le respect. Il y a même un véhicule disponible et d’autres moyens de locomotion plus occasionnels.

Ce jeu est bourré de petits détails, comme ces interactions que beaucoup considèrent inutiles ou redondantes mais qui pourtant apportent une authenticité qui fait selon moi la différence (comme préparer son café soi-même, ce qui apporte un bonus permanent). Le scénario est aussi de qualité. Un mystère qui se déroule sur un rythme maîtrisé, sans chercher à être inutilement cryptique ou complexe, et plein de moments mémorables.

Mundaun is a game that is hard to put in a certain category. It fits many. It is part walking sim with a really cool visual style, it has some puzzles, it has some combat, driving and some creepy horror stuff as well. The biggest part of this game though, is soul. It can be a bit janky at times, but the charm outweighs the minor annoyances. You can tell this was made with passion.

You play as a boy returning to the village of your Grandfather in the Swiss mountains. From there it turns into a kind of fairy tale. I am not Swiss myself, but I have read that this game uses alot of Swiss folklore (and apperently an old language too) which is cool. The game is fairly short (I finished it in 5 hours), but it doesn't overstay its welcome and you can get different endings.

What really works:
- The art style of the game is unique. There aren't any colors, just a hand-penciled black and whiteish world. It makes the setting feel weird from the start, but it also works really well. You have some nice interactions with certain objects in the world that helps create an eerie feeling, and if you have a keen eye you can spot hidden details.

What works:
- The story takes you up and down the mountains and while there isn't too much to discover, it is rewarding when you find a little secret. Ther
- The music is good and same with the voice acting. The radio has some really beautiful music.
- The game allows you to take your time at certain spots and just absorb what you see around you. There are many places that are like paradise on earth

What doesn't work:
- The combat can be a bit annoying, but that is until you understand that you aren't really meant to fight all enemies.

TL;DR: Short creepy Swiss mountain walking sim with some combat. For some reason this games makes me think of a less combat focused Northern Journey (a comparison I don't do lightly as Northern Journey is one of my favorite games), just in the Swiss alps instead of Norway. It is weird and janky in the good way, and is made with huge amounts of passion and soul (at least it seems that way).
I suspect not everybody will enjoy Mundaun, but if you are looking for something different then try it. Maybe wait for a sale though, since it is a fairly short game, but full price does not feel like a robbery.

Whilst this game has some really cool ideas I unfortunately cannot recommend it.

Starting with the positives, and the most noticeable part of the game; this game has unbelievable art direction. It is also really cool to have a game set around this mythology as very few games do so. The story also runs a decent balance of being direct enough to understand whilst also leaving some mysteries for the player to fill the gaps.

Unfortunately that's where most of my praise ends. Everything else in the game including the gameplay kinda falls apart for me. The game has so many ideas and mechanics that they all feel half baked and don't work together well. It wants to be so many different games at once instead of just focusing on a few features. An example of this is in act 1 and at the start of the game you are introduced to a mechanic where you enter paintings and altar the world around you. This happens a few times and then is just completely abandoned for the rest of the game. An incredibly interesting mechanic which could've been developed into more but instead is just left as a one time gimmick. The whole game feels like this. Combine this with sometimes confusing objectives where a guide was often needed and it just leads to a frustrating experience which could be so much more.

Mundaun, ana karakterimiz Curdin’in dedesinin cenaze haberini almasıyla, çocukluğunu geride bıraktığını sandığı dağ köyüne yaptığı sessiz bir dönüşle başlıyor. Atmosfer, daha ilk andan itibaren bulanıklık ve belirsizlik duygusunu hissettirmeye başlıyor. Otobüsle yaptığımız yolculuk sırasında etrafı izlerken, çevrenin ne olduğunu tam olarak kavrayamamak oyunun niyetini hemen ortaya koyuyor. Dedemizin ambarına vardığımızda, onu lanetlenmiş hâlde buluyor ve bu lanetin ardındaki gerçeği aramaya başlıyoruz.

Oyunumuzun ana villaini Yaşlı Adam karakteri, Mundaun’da karanlığın sesi değil, aklıdır. Bağırmaz, tehdit etmez; yalnızca seçenekler sunarak insanın aklına girmeye çalışır. Ancak bu seçeneklerin hangi koşullar altında verildiği, bizi “doğru” sandığımız kararları yeniden düşünmeye zorluyor.

Bu karakterle söylemek istediğim bir diğer nokta ise, Witcher 3 oyunundaki Gaunter O'Dimm karakterine şaşırtıcı derecede benzer olması. Bizi sürekli bir tuzağın içine çekmesi, beklenmedik anlarda karşımıza çıkması ve gerçekte ne olduğunu hâlâ tam olarak kavrayamamış olmamız (Tanrı mı, iblis mi, yoksa bir canavar mı?) bu benzerliği daha da güçlendiriyor.

Etrafta bulunan canavarlarla kısa bir süreliğine bakışırsak, korku yavaş yavaş bedenimizi sarmaya başlıyor. Eğer göz temasından kaçmazsak, bir süre sonra felçli durum efektine giriyoruz; hâlâ devam edersek ölüyoruz.
Korkunun burada fiziksel bir saldırı olmaması, üzerinde durulması gereken bir unsur. Burada amaç tamamen algının istilası şeklinde ilerliyor. [b] Yani canavar sana zarar vermiyor; varlığını sana kabul ettiriyor. [/b]
Benim de hâl böyle olunca aklıma çok güzel bir cümle geliyor:
“Bir şeyi tanımaya veya tanımlamaya çalıştığında, ona alan açarsın.”

Oyun süresince bol bol bulmaca da çözüyoruz. Bunların orta zorluk seviyesine sahip olduklarını söyleyebilirim. Çoğu bulmaca, oyuncuyu uzun süre oyalamaktan ziyade çevreyi dikkatli gözlemlemeye ve verilen ipuçlarını doğru okumaya odaklanıyor. Duvarlarda asılı olan poster ve tablolara odaklandığımızda, o görselin yaşandığı zamanı çağrıştıracak sesler duymaya başlıyoruz. Yavaş yavaş ekran yakınlaşıyor ve dış sesle olan irtibat kesiliyor. Bu durumu her seferinde bilinçli olarak tekrarladım ve etkisini gözlemledim.

[spoiler] Curdin, oyun boyunca masum sandığı dedesinin aslında o kadar da masum olmadığını öğreniyor. Yaşlı Adam ile bir anlaşma yapan dedemiz, haksız bir savaşı bu sayede kazanıyor. Yaşlı Adam düşman askerlerini helak ediyor; karşılığında ise dedemizden masum bir insan ruhu talep ediyor ve dedemiz bunu kabul ediyor.
Daha sonra dedemiz anlaşmadan cayarak, oyun boyunca sadık dostumuz olan masum bir koyunu Yaşlı Adam’a götürüyor. Ancak Yaşlı Adam bu durumu kabul etmiyor; bağırmaya başlıyor, etrafı yıkıp döküyor ve koyun dostumuzu lanetliyor. Bununla da kalmayıp dedemizi de lanetliyor. Böylece aslında oyun boyunca çözmeye çalıştığımız şeyin, bu anlaşmanın sonucu ortaya çıkan lanet olduğunu anlıyoruz.

Bir noktada geçmişe, anlaşmanın yapıldığı ana geri dönüyoruz. Oyun boyunca masum sandığımız dedemizi Yaşlı Adam’dan kurtarmaya çalıştığımızı düşünürken, durumun pek de öyle olmadığı ortaya çıkıyor. Bu noktada oyun bize bir seçim sunuyor: Anlaşmayı iptal ettirebilir ya da kadere müdahale etmeyip anlaşmanın gerçekleşmesine izin verebiliriz. [/spoiler]

Evet, anlaşmaya izin verdim ve kaderi eğip bükmedim. Dedemiz tamamen masum olsaydı bile, bu yine de şaibeli bir seçim olurdu. Geçmişe dönüp bir şeyi değiştirmek her zaman tehlikeli bir fikirdir; kelebek etkisinin nelere yol açacağını bilemeyiz.

9,5 saatlik deneyimimden sonra Mundaun’un gerçekten değeri pek bilinmeyen bir oyun olduğunu düşünüyorum. Gerek hikâyesi, anlatmak istedikleri, dünyasının derinliği ve oyuncuyu gerçeklikle yüzleştirme biçimiyle oldukça etkileyici bir deneyim sunuyor.
Haritaları adım adım çözmek ve açmak, bölgeler arasında geçiş yapabilmek; dedemizin arabasıyla tüm köyü dolaşmak oyunun sunduğu keşif hissini güçlendiren detaylar arasında. İndirim dönemlerinde yaklaşık 3 dolar gibi bir fiyata edinilebiliyor; ancak bana göre standart fiyatını da fazlasıyla hak eden bir yapım.

История крутится вокруг молодого человека, который получает письмо с извещением о гибели дедушки. Что-то в содержимом письма его смущает, и он решает поехать к деду в Альпы, чтобы разобраться в произошедшем.

Довольно быстро мы оказываемся дома, возле сгоревшего сарая, где погиб дед. Рядом мы замечаем мольберт со странной картиной, которая показывает нам жуткое видение недавнего пожара. В этом видении есть безумный хохочущий художник и зловещий мужчина в шляпе, который затягивает нас в огонь и оставляет страшный ожог.

Это были довольно впечатляющие первые пять минут, которые отлично задали тон и атмосферу дальнейшей игре. А она тут жуткая, страшная, а эмоции персонажей крайне неестественные из-за визуального стиля игры. Все текстуры нарисованы карандашом и углём, что сильно выделяет стиль на фоне других хорроров.

Локации интересные - рука постоянно тянется сделать скриншот. Звуки, голоса, говорящие на непонятном диалекте немецкого - всё задаёт жути.

Посмотрите трейлер - именно из-за этой атмосферы я в своё время и купил игру. Но играть в неё неприятно по другой причине.

[h1]Геймплей[/h1]
Это классический сюжетный симулятор ходьбы с простым взаимодействием на уровне "найди нужный предмет → подбери предмет → догадайся, где его использовать". Сюжет подаётся через диалоги, интерактивные катсцены, внутренний монолог персонажа и записки. Игра выдаёт сюжетные задания, поэтому потеряться здесь сложно. В какой-то момент нам даже дают машину, которой приятно управлять.

И, на мой взгляд, если бы на этом всё и закончилось - игра получилась бы вполне достойной и приятной. Если бы несбалансированная боевая система.

У противников есть два способа нам навредить: ударить напрямую или «наслать проклятие» (которое, к слову, выглядит очень круто). В момент, когда противник замечает героя, он сразу начинает кастовать проклятье, что понижает скорость перемещения. Из-за этого и убежать от него нельзя, и добежать до него тоже. Если врагов несколько, то скорость действия проклятья увеличивается в два раза. И, соответственно, в два раза быстрее умираешь и просто не успеваешь отбиться.

Окей, можно попробовать скрытное прохождение (о его наличии подсказывают достижения игры), но враги тут, видимо, с очками для ночного зрения - замечают за 40 метров в кромешной темноте. Я попробовал найти обходные незаметные пути, но если они тут и есть, то они не считываются на уровне.

Окей, можно понизить сложность. Её уменьшение как будто даёт мне больше времени до смерти, но не меняет размер урона у оружия (очень классные вилы, кстати, убивать первого врага было крайне эффектно и приятно). Оружие ломается так же быстро, а количество здоровья у противника не уменьшается. В итоге "лёгкий" уровень такой же сложный как и "средний".

После четвёртой неудачной попытки я rage-quit-нул игру и решил доиграть её на ютубе. И, чёрт возьми, когда я смотрю видео как играет кто-то другой, то игра выглядит намного более играбельной. После первой локации впереди много интересных геймплейных решений, сюжетных поворотов и разнообразных уровней. Мне жаль, что я не смог получить такой же приятный опыт. Мне действительно хотелось, чтобы игра мне понравилась.

Mundaun - очень стильная и необычная по атмосфере игра, которая наверняка понравится любителям небольших инди-хорроров. Однако геймплейный опыт оказался крайне фрустрирующим, из-за чего получить удовольствие не получилось. Через два часа игры я сделал rage-quit и возвращаться к ней не хочу.

Испытать боевой геймплей вы сможете в первый час-полтора. Попробуйте, может у вас получится лучше чем у меня. Если нет - то запросите возврат средств.

Swiss alpine dark folk tale told by means of a video game. Plays a lot like an adventure game of the early video game days, i.e. "find item, keep in inventory to progress something later". Some easy puzzles and even a sleigh race minigame thrown in as well. Get rid of enemies using basic melee and rifle combat or use pacifist sneak approach.

Nice hand drawn 3D world. Decent soundtrack. Different endings depending on your in-game choices.

Controls a bit clunky at times - especially driving that vehicle you get. Overall quite enjoyable experience.

Настоящий хидден гем среди симуляторов ходьбы. Одна из игр, которые можно без скидок назвать произведением искусства.

Здесь всё на высоком уровне: эстетика, атмосфера, сюжет, баланс между паззлами, сюжетными вставками и исследованием, а ещё коллектаблы, стелс и даже немного стрельбы.

В основе сюжета довольно базовая притча про сделку с Сатаной, но с парой-тройкой твистов и хорошей подачей. На руку играет и максимально неочевидная эстетика швейцарских Альп начала XX века — я такого в играх вообще ни разу не видел. Причём это не просто декорации — в сюжете обыгрываются местные верования, а разговаривают здесь сразу на двух языках, швейцарском диалекте немецкого и на некой квази-латыни, у которой в мире всего несколько тысяч носителей.

Я провёл в игре в два раза больше времени, чем в среднем нужно на прохождение: бродил вдоль альпийских лугов, пыхтел трубочкой (необязательная механика), неторопливо ездил на грузовичке, переключая радиостанции, осматривал каждую хибару, варил кофе (повышает один из статов) и просто кайфовал.

А ещё это один из редчайших случаев, когда мне захотелось снимать скриншоты, потому что картины эта игра рисует умопомрачительные. Причём рисует буквально — текстуры сложены из карандашных рисунков.

Поругать можно разве что слегка дубовый геймдизайн (невидимые стены, которые открываются позднее по сюжету), скудноватое аудио оформление и нелогичные (на мой взгляд) пути достижения разных концовок.

I’m a huge casual gamer, which means I absolutely hate combat, stealth, and all those mechanics that make you run around stressing out. It just drains me. BUT THIS GAME! It places its enemies so masterfully and nails its mechanics and visuals so perfectly that you can’t even complain. It’s a full-on art project with real soul. The story’s fresh and unique. The atmosphere is one-of-a-kind. I was really hoping Alegria would come back at the end, but nope. Maybe I missed some things and alternate endings, but I absolutely loved every bit of it. I usually drop games all the time, but this one kept pulling me back.

Mundaun is one of the most unique horror games I have ever played. Arguably an immersive sim, this game is absolutely dripping with atmosphere, ways to interact with the world around you, and fun, hidden details.

The artstyle is what drew me in and is what kept the visuals striking throughout the whole game with how it presents different environments, characters and animations, and ultimately what sets this game apart. It's a horror game that's not that scary if you've played a horror game before. You run around the place finding different things to unlock other stuff to interact with different NPCs and pave the way forward, and all of that was fun to do besides the parts where you try to sneak around enemies. Those parts can feel like a chore until you find out you can sprint or drive your way right through or find alternate paths which happens naturally. I enjoyed the story even though the endings can be confusing but it was still a journey worth taking.

For a game with only one colour, Mundaun is full of character and an overwhelming sense of Place. It feels like an ancient tale, despite being set somewhere around the mid-last-century. With an efficiency of storytelling and of characters, Mundaun sets you in this isolated mountain village and weaves a horror story of generations.

It a steady, thoughtful pace it pulls you into its environment and its mystery. Movement is slow, though not onerously so, and combat deadly so stealth is advisable. Or simply run away if you can.

Mundaun sometimes really did feel like Dear Esther with an inventory system and, in the final act, a rifle. Exploring these cold and lonely hills is a curious and lonely experience, you come to appreciate every rare person or goat that you meet. I found myself wishing they only had more to say, but perhaps their brevity is for the best.

With the carefully limited visual palette, the game leans heavily on the details and rewards a keen and inquisitive eye. Every feeling is amplified by the contemplative and evocative soundscape - religious music alternates with folk, the snowy mountains are crisp, the caves resonate and wet.

If you appreciate a good story well told, mystery and dread and the sins of the fathers, you can certainly do worse than to spend an evening with Mundaun.

Don't listen to the other reviews bashing this game for the combat because this game isn't an action game and the combat isn't even that clunky. This game is perfect. Finished it in one sitting and could not have been happier with it. Amazing telling of folklore and morals and war and family. I wish I could play through it again for the first time.

游戏中你会遇到小女孩Flurina（神秘盟友）、吊桥上的画家Giovanni，以及隐瞒真相的牧师等。过程穿插祖父的记忆闪回，你甚至能介入过去：让祖父签契约（维持历史，谷地得救）或阻止他签（改变过去，魔鬼无约束，导致灾难重演）。

A solid, well-written game that lasts 4-5 hours. I completed 100% of the game, which took me 9 hours.
I liked the visual style, gameplay mechanics, narrative, and villain introduction. The plot, while clichéd, feels fresh in its hand-drawn, pencil-like visual style.
The game has some minor bugs, so I wouldn't recommend testing it for durablity. If you start an action, see it through to the end. Don't let the pot fill with water and then run away, otherwise you risk breaking the pot :)
After completing the game, I was left with two questions: where did all the monsters come from and what actually happens in the good ending.
I hope the studio is doing well, because I'm eagerly awaiting for new projects.

Mundaun completely surprised me. The atmosphere in this game is incredible—quiet, eerie, and unlike anything else I’ve played. The hand-drawn art gives the whole valley a strange, dreamlike feel that gets under your skin in the best way.

I watched a documentary on how the developer built the game, and it honestly blew my mind. Seeing the amount of detail, craftsmanship, and dedication that went into every pencil stroke made me appreciate it even more. You can feel the love and obsession behind it.

If you enjoy horror that’s artistic, slow-burn, and full of folklore and mood, this one is something special.

Graphically unique, and I appreciated the quirkiness. Story wise, the folk-horror vibe is effective, leaving you off-kilter and wanting to know more. Gameplay is a slog, with no direction, no logical way to interact or deal with opponents, and often extremely awkward. It all just leaves me grasping for a solution or stuck in a sequence until by some mysterious combination, I was able to move forward. But then...it crashed and will not run. I've reinstalled, deleted everything and reinstalled multiple times, but nothing but a blank screen greets me. Not worth it.

Definitely worth checking out if you find the setting, art, or genre engaging for $6 on sale. But i find the gameplay and direction a bit obtuse which starts to make the great narrative less enjoyable.

In particular, the enemies seem to see you from a mile away due to the classic “stealth” gameplay with no actual stealth mechanics. The honey area is where I stopped playing for now. Maybe the rifle makes it better later. You could easily explore in a different area than intended due to the vague objectives and miss clues which tell you how to counter specific enemies. It simply is not fun to die slowly and not be particularly scared AND be locked out of achievements.

Игровой процесс вначале неочевидный и контринтуитивный, хоть впоследствии игра тебя ведёт по различным локациям и всё становится ясно и понятно.

Дизайн необычный, разрисованный карандашом, некоторых укачивает, когда в игре перемещаешься на транспортном средстве.

Игра не особо притягательна, но есть в ней некоторая занятная задумка, сюжет не слишком хаотичный, чтобы его нельзя было принять.

Есть возможность сделать христианский выбор.

Disappointing. I had just finished The Excavation of Hob's Barrow (great game) and really wanted a good folk horror game. The pencil art ended up backfiring and makes things feel unnatural and difficult to see. I needed a guide just to get me 2 1/2 hours through the game. Not sure how found and figured out half the things did. Once I crossed a gate, the sun just went down and enemies flocked to me I had no clue how to deal with them. Apparently I missed some combat tutorial. It was really creepy though. I may try this again some time. I'll update my review if my opinion changes.

[h2]A trick for a treat[/h2]
Mundaun is a hand-penciled, first-person horror narrative game. Its story begins with Curdin returning to his home village, nested somewhere in the Swiss Alps, after he is informed via letter from the village's priest that his grandfather died in a tragic fire. Apparently, his grandpa has already been buried so there is no need to travel there... Not suspicious at all! It won't be long that the peculiar circumstances of his grandpa's death will be revealed, implicating an infamous painter and a mysterious old man with a blood-curdling aura and decades-old secrets. Evil is rearing its ugly head to fixate its gaze on the unsuspecting Curdin, who will inevitably realise that he may have finally returned to Mundaun but he maybe not leave it ever again.

Elements from the adventure genre creep in its gameplay frequently and something I definitely didn't expect was the inclusion of combat or actually driving a truck -the Muvel! I would describe Mundaun as an [i]augmented[/i] "walking sim". What I mean by that is that while there are plenty of actions and interactions within the game that are not found typically in other walking sims (inventory, puzzles, combat, a bit of questing, etc), in its core Mundaun is a narrative game based on the exploration of a heavily atmospheric setting. There are incorporated adventure and action elements but neither is defining the game itself. For example, Syberia 1 & 2 are atmospheric games with an exploration theme, but are clearly focused in puzzle solving -making this the main defining feature of both games and thus anchoring them in the point-and-click adventure genre. Mundaun is a pretty unique experience overall and it was quite a pleasant surprise to find out it deviates from and simultaneously enriches the walking sim genre.

Endearingly creepy and amazing in creating a dreamlike atmosphere, Mundaun takes its time unfolding its story -it's definitely a [i]slow burner[/i]. Apart from the gradual buildup of horror in the game, you can also expect one or two (or perhaps more?..who knows!) jumpscares. I distinctly recall two times that a well-placed and totally unexpected jumpscare made me flinch and sent me hyperventilating, while cursing and praising the game consecutively.

The game encourages exploration. Your weapons are going to be pitchforks and your grandpa's trusty rifle. Battling enemies out feels cumbersome, be it ranged (you are [i]not[/i] going to 360 no-scope enemies with the rifle) or melee combat (Curdin's city's-boy living is painfully obvious when he tries utilizing the pitchfork as a weapon). The type of enemies you will encounter in Mundaun is both melee and ranged and there are mechanics for fighting inflammable targets with... you guessed it, fire as well as protecting Curin's delicate face from the fury of bees with thick smoke from his grandpa's pipe.

The puzzles in Mundaun are basic yet satisfying. There are three traits to upgrade while playing: Curin's courage, health and handling of the rifle. The first is accomplished by preparing and drinking coffee [i](I love it!)[/i], maximum health level rises every time you consume food and improving the rifle's handling (i.e. time for epic gamer moments), is made possible by finding manuals scattered throughout the various locations that you will be visiting in the game. All three stats are important as Curdin's resistance to fear allows him to fight (or run) longer when coming in contact with enemies, helping him to fend off that creeping, paralysing sense of dread that comes with fighting otherwordly entities for a few more, yet ever so valuable, seconds. Greater health means more bee stings in the eyes tolerated and the rifle training makes up for poor Curdin's lack of combat experience, which means less swaying the damned thing around and more firing on the enemies.

[i]"They whisper, what no tongue can tell"[/i]. I would describe the sound in Mundaun as being very deliberate. There are no unnecessary sounds going off or melodies playing in the background: only whatever sound naturally results from your actions and the mountain's beautifully haunting [strike]whispers[/strike] silence. The only notable exception of background music are the radios that you will encounter while exploring or driving the Muvel, filling the air with Romansh songs or other folkloric tunes. However, you can rest assured (or panic uncertain) that when you find yourself in danger you will be alerted by effects such as disturbing violin screeches or chimes. There are also some amazing musical compositions resonating in the main screen and in narrative key points, that fit the tone of the game's theme perfectly.

Romansh, an intriquing language rich in history and lore from the south-eastern parts of Switzerland where it is spoken, is heard throughout the entirety of Mundaun. The game is based on several myths of the Swiss alps and Swiss folklore is prevalent, having its evocative imagery presented with a unique artstyle. Still, traces of realism keep the player tethered in this chaotic, creepy surreal world.

Mundaun is an underrated gem of not only the indie horror genre but as a game in general. This egregious mistake must be fixed! No more overlooked Mundaun: You can look Mundaun over right after reading this incoherent babbling disguised as a review and help to correct this grave injustice by purchasing the game. I wholeheartedly recommend you experience Mundaun's surreal beauty!

Was für ein geniales Spiel. Klar. die Black/White Optik muss man mögen. Aber gerade das zeichnet Mundaun aus. Die Geschichte is abgefahren und einfach spannend . Fünf Enden gibt es auch noch dazu , kommt eben darauf an wie man sich an entscheidenden Stellen festlegt. Man kann Mundaun mit keinem anderen Spiel vergleichen und bin ein alter Gamer der schon viel gesehen und gespielt hat. Kanns nur empfehlen.

Très bonne surprise que la découverte de ce jeu ! Très bon scénario de folk horror, une ambiance qui se pose dès le début et une DA vraiment à tomber par terre, tellement elle est magnifique. Les séquences de combat/infiltration sont un peu en dessous, mais à part ça, j'ai adoré de bout en bout, n'hésitez pas.

Mundaun is a good example of folk horror.

The game opens with you on a bus heading back to your childhood home deep in the mountains after getting word of your grandfathers death. Things take a turn REAL QUICK. Not going to get in story spoilers, but the stakes are established real quick and you're given sufficient "Hey this is a problem I need to SOLVE" motivation.

How it plays is you walking around in first person solving puzzles and occasionally hiding from something that wants to hurt you. You have tools to make them stop, but its not permanent. In terms of difficulty I didn't really have a hard time, the game isn't a stickler when it comes to giving you what you need. There's more than one way to get some puzzle items, and you can have already have what you need to defend yourself when a threat shows up if you made a point to explore and look around.

The real star of the show is the art. Everything is hand penciled. EVERYTHING. There's a point where you can see the actual texture sheets for characters and it's all pencil (it makes sense in context). It's a great example of style carrying a game. Something about the mood it brings helps enhance the plot, and makes the game in general way more memorable than if everything was regular textures instead.

Not too long, multiple endings, secrets to find, goats to pet, this games might be what you're looking for if you're looking for something for spooky season that isn't TOO intense while still managing to be unnerving. I give Mundaun a "nefarious contents of an abandoned roadside shack" out of "Man, that old man sucks", would recommend.

Visual hand drawn style, sound design of surroundings, old retoromanish radio, music, cryptic folklore from an isolated rural Alp area! It all was so fantastic! Got goosebumps while playing through the story. If you ever visited Switzerlands Alps and stayed in an authentic wooden cottage house then this game will resonate with you even more! Did not expect so much fun from this game! I relocated in 2014 from Hungary to St. Gallen and visited many times Appenzell region and Hell yes this game made me feel the historical atmosphere of these mountains! Well done. I wish more games like this were made!

Враги видят тебя на расстоянии 3х метров и не пойми как наносят урон которого практически нельзя избежать, убить их нельзя, только положить на пару секунд максимально неудобным замахиванием, а врагов тут будет ОЧЕНЬ много. Уже после первых двух глав они начинают раздражать, нежели пугать или вводить в стресс.
Сюжетные квесты как и сама игра кажутся затянутыми по причине выше и далее - 2 и 3 локация слишком долгие, огромные и при этом практически незаполненные ничем. Тебе нужно вечно мататься с подъемника на гору, с горы на машине через тоннель, оттуда пешком вниз и обратно. И так всю игру. Очень надоедает и вызывает скуку, плюсом ко всему, опять же, вся полупустая карта заселена болванчиками и геймплей превращается просто в лютейшую духоту.
Игре не помешала бы карта, хотя бы отдаленно показывающая подробности моментами очень похожей и от того запутанной местности (в одной из кат сцен в конце было сложно понять на какой из 3х локаций я вообще нахожусь).
Так же слегка побесили небольшие баги, но в целом это не мешает игровому процессу.
3/10, такой геймплей прилично портит ощущение от красивого визуала

Несмотря на то что игру не хочется проходить заново (а иногда и вообще просто до конца) своя атмосфера у нее есть и я скорее советую чем нет, если изначально воспринимать ее как квест с принеси-подай и ?стелсом? то она возможно вызовет более приятные эмоции. плюс у игры прекрасная озвучка.

This game is a testament to why I like the indy-developed games. There are fresh, constantly-changing game mechanics. I like the realistic snow setting. It has a great hand-drawn art. It gave me genuine scares of different types several times. The developers are competent people. And, best of all, I bought this game at a discount.

EDIT. I finished playing the game. Apparently, only a third of the players get to the middle of the game, and only a quarter of the players who started playing the game finished it. Maybe they find the game process boring, but I never found it boring. I always wanted to know what was around the corner... it was going to be something new -- new gameplay, new twist of the story. I had to look up only once the walkthrough (I did not know how to activate the goat head). I am glad I was able to play the game. And it made me thinking about what war happened in Switzerland a century ago.

Me duele mucho marcar tan mal a Mundaun por que le tenia muchas expectativas. Su apartado visual y su trabajo artístico son increíbles; se nota el cariño en cada detalle del mundo que construye y ciertamente se ven pinceladas de lo que podría haber sido un excelente juego. Sin embargo, todo se pierde en un gameplay burdo, con mecánicas de gestión de objetos que nunca escasean, enemigos tediosos de esquivar o combatir, y un sistema de mejoras que podría directamente no existir. Verdaderamente parece estar empeñado en intentar frenarte de lo único que termina siendo interesante: la historia. Pero incluso ahi, su ritmo lento pide construirse alrededor de sistemas que me motiven a seguir escuchándote. No puede ser que cuando por fin me mostrás todas tus cartas, yo ya esté esperando que te calles.

Mundaun possède une atmosphère singulière, portée par une ambiance sonore réussie et un style visuel marqué, tout en teintes sépia et en textures dessinées à la main. L’histoire nous plonge dans ce lieu étrange où nous revenons après une longue absence, lorsqu’une lettre du curé local nous apprend la mort de notre grand-père, emporté dans l’incendie ravageur de sa grange à foin.

Cette horrible nouvelle est également très troublante et pousse le protagoniste à se rendre sur place pour enquêter. Ce qui se dégage de Mundaun est oppressant et mystérieux, une sorte de malaise diffus qu’on peine à définir précisément. L’ancrage culturel, très fort, dans une vallée isolée des Alpes suisses renforce encore l’identité propre du titre.

Puis viennent les combats. Composer avec un simulateur de marche au gameplay minimal, pensé pour servir une narration forte, c’est sans aucun problème. Mais dès lors qu’on y ajoute des mécaniques plus ambitieuses (inventaire, gestion de ressources, phases d’infiltration et affrontements), il faut que l’exécution suive. Or ces séquences, bancales et souvent ridicules, brisent totalement l’immersion. À elles seules, l’atmosphère angoissante et le décor suffisaient. L’ajout d’ennemis s’avère au mieux inutile, au pire exaspérant. Ainsi, après deux heures de jeu captivantes, j’ai lâché le jeu avec un profond soupir, avant de me contraindre une semaine plus tard à reprendre pour venir à bout de ces passages laborieux.

L’histoire reprend alors de l’élan… jusqu’à la prochaine séquence de combat, face à des adversaires toujours plus irritants. On finit par courir plutôt qu’explorer, à délaisser certains recoins par peur (ou lassitude ?) de provoquer une confrontation de plus.
La fin, malgré de bonnes idées de mise en scène et quelques variantes de dénouement, reste finalement assez prévisible. Rien ne surprend vraiment, et l’on se retrouve face à un récit assez classique. J’aurais aimé parcourir le jeu avec un mode sans ennemis, où leur seule présence, amplifiée par un brouillage visuel ou un son saturé à leur approche, aurait suffi à nourrir l’angoisse. Mais non. Il faut subir les attaques à distance d’hommes de paille et mourir sous leurs jets de foin. Cocasse.

En somme, Mundaun se révèle être une expérience plutôt décevante, à mon grand désarroi. Il n’y a guère à comprendre au final, ce n’est même pas cryptique, c’est juste très banal. Les seules caractéristiques qui démarquent le jeu sont tout son enrobage visuel et sonore, mais l’histoire en elle-même se résume en peu de mots.
Comme Steam demande de faire un choix, le pouce bleu ou rouge, je préfère opter pour le pouce rouge, sans dire pour autant que Mundaun est à jeter, mais plutôt pour appuyer le fait que je ne recommande par réellement l'expérience.

this game is an underrated gem. the art style and story/setting are both captivating, giving us a unique and engaging atmosphere. the gameplay offers a nice variety, though it mostly feels like a walking sim. there are a few enemy encounters, but they're optional; you can choose to avoid them, or you have the option to take them on using one of the weapons you’ll find along the way.
