Storyline

You are Lee, a college student obsessed with the American Civil War. Someone at school told you about Holt’s gas station outside town, just the spot to watch the upcoming meteor shower for a perfect date with your girlfriend. But at Holt's you’ll meet Lou Hill, a writer investigating the link between these meteor storms and sightings of human-size winged creatures with red, glowing eyes. It seems to Lou that whenever these 'mothmen' are spotted, bad things happen...

Власне це щось дуже, невимовно вайбове для тих, хто посміхнувся на фразі вище й тих, хто в темі усіляких старих штук (ну ви ж мене читаєте, хах). Тут одразу ще й трішки від коміксу та старих ігор, загалом історія ніби вилізла з 80х вся. Не буду тут про сюжет, просто зловіть вайб старих жахастиків та криптозоології зі мною.
Що дуже хочу окремо зауважити - ігролад. От дякую за нього красно, в гру дуже, дуже приємно грати: в ній все працює як слід й зроблене так, щоб гравцям було зручно - текст можна пришвидшити та промотати, зручні збереження, автоматичне повернення до останнього вибору в разі смерті, беклог, оце от все, ну цукерочка, тішуся невимовно. Чудово, що є такі розробники, щоб нагадувати мені про такі речі, можливі та важливі, бо з тим, як переважна більшість робить сюжетні ігри, я починаю забувати про це.
Звуки тут теж дуже стилізовано-олдскульні, але влучні, візуал самі дивіться, для поціновувачів, але сюди підходить чудово.
Коротше це гра не для всіх, але я тицяв в демо й не розчарувався ніц, тому й купив. Приємна розвага на вечір, вигадлива та стильна, попри все сюжет тут теж наче з жахастиків 80х та 90х, тому радив би радше заради візуалу та атмосфери, але радив би точно.

The game's basically an 80 minute long visual novel, with some minor interactive elements, which is hardly a bad thing. If the story is good, I'm all about games with limited interactivity. It's a throwback both to pulp sci fi novels, and ZX Spectrum games. The ZX Spectrum graphics are really a treat. I'm a sucker for when games bring out that color palette. It's good at building tension and ambiance. The characters get to toe the line of being sympathetic and dysfunctional that makes horror work. I think that there's one line in particular that I consider to be *pretty* dumb, which for a game of such a short length is a bit more of note than something that might run longer. It's not brilliant, but it's a good ride.

I did have one hiccup with it, which is partially my fault, but really also kind of poor UIs fault. So in moments of interactivity, oftentimes you can die by doing it wrong. You witness a fun death scene, and get hit with a 'retry' or 'menu' option. I accidentally hit 'menu' when I was less than 10 minutes away from beating the game. There's no autosave because that'd be a little silly, and it's not long enough for it to have made sense to prompt the player to save. So basically I ended my save file for hitting 'menu' on accident after mashing dialogue, because there's no 'are you sure' pop-up. Mashing through wouldn't take THAT long, but really I just looked up a walkthrough and watched the end of the game.

7/10- It's a fun story with some really memorable spritework. It's not one of my favorite stories ever told or anything, but I never had a bad time with it. Really solid effort. Give it a spin.

The game has a great pacing. The dialogue never becomes a nuisance because it is kept rather short and accompanied by puzzles or narrator changes, as the story is told by a different person in each chapter.

Sadly the story is just bad, it feels like a cheap short story without any reason for why things are happening. Also they tried to give the characters atleast some depth, but it falls short in an instant, because suddenly the characters act the complete opposite as they should in regards to their introduced personality. On top of that the game is short. It took me around 1,5 hours to finish the whole game and I am not an avid reader. For full price I would avoid that game completely.

It's so good. After trying to read several Japanese visual novels and being bored out of my mind, it's so good to finally read a visual novel with interesting characters and some ACTION. Also fairly short as you can see from my playtime, which if you're old is a good thing. Now I have to read all the other visual novels by these people!

美术和音乐非常契合，唯一可惜的是没有中文，导致在游戏的过程中大部分注意力会被字幕拉走，从而降低了故事氛围的代入感，好在英文文本不难，不至于两步一翻译。

[i]全成就好拿，打牌的地方有些简单窍门，每次开新的一局尽量先把能放的牌都放了，如果有相同的牌数可以像5-6-7-8-9-8-7-6这样做一个循环，然后记得k可以接a，基本上运气好第一排能放掉大部分牌的话，就离成功不远了，只要剩下14张牌或以下就能解锁成就，翻牌通常只需要4-5次就可以。[/i]

As always this Dev makes such BEAUTIFUL and sinister pixel art and really drives home the ambience of their games!!!

I would recommend this but after playing some of this dev's newer games first this one left me feeling like i wanted more than it gave. Grizzlyman is way more polished than this one, but i still found it charming and enjoyable overall. So just take with a grain of salt if you're playing this one after Grizzlyman.

If you want to play more from this dev you definately will enjoy them as they improve over time!

Very original.
The pacing is really good and so are graphics and music. The atmosphere from LCB's games is unmatched.
The games are on the short side but you will remember them fondly (and for hardcore players, you can try different ways of finishing them).
Overall, a great game.

It's okay. The game started off really well. I liked how it introduces its characters; I was truly invested in each one's story.
The visuals are very good, as is the OST, perfect for those who want a real sense of nostalgia, coupled with the pulp horror theme—it's perfect! The game also features a few puzzles here and there, nothing too complicated, but it helps break up the monotony of a novel for those unfamiliar with it, and it also helps with achievements, which some people love.
But, from the middle to the end, the game falls apart. The horror and monsters are never truly explored, the characters become extremely idiotic, and before you know it, the game ends.

O jogo também apresenta alguns puzzles aqui e alí, nada muito complicado, mas ajuda a quebrar a monotonia de uma novel para quem não está acostumado, além de ajudar em criar conquistas, o que algumas pessoas adoram.
Mas, do meio pro final o jogo desaba. O terror, monstros nunca são realmente explorados, os personagens ficam extremamente idiotas e quando você menos espera, o jogo acaba.

Mothman 1966 is a visual novel that strays far from the poster boys of the genre. With beautiful pixel art with limited colour palette and evocative yet strange story filled with generational family trauma, solitaire civil war trivia and of course cryptids Mothmen stands out like an experience like no other.

While some may say there are too many loose ends and that there is more style over substance the story has strong main characters whose monologues and depictions in pixel art are nuanced, human and cinematic.

From a lonely gas station attendant obsessed with solving his grandmothers impossible solitaire challenge to a couple conflicted about moving forward in their relationship while withholding secrets the human condition is explored while strange weird horror situations occur. Eerie, unsettling and unforgettable a great start to a series called pixel pulp.

新作「グリズリーマン」を見かけて非常に惹かれたけど、
英語のみなら厳しいな…ということで過去作品にあったこちらをプレイ。

作品毎に限られたカラーが決まっていてすごく綺麗。
ミニゲームや選択肢をミスっても、直前からリトライ出来るのが嬉しい。

章ごとに視点が変わり飽きさせないし、突っ込みどころがあったり、
ラストの引きもかなり面白かった。
こちらに解釈を委ねるタイプのゲームは評価も分かれるかも知れないが、
エーッ！？となるラストが最高。

ただボリュームを考えると少し高いかなと思うので、
セール時などにバンドルで購入することをお勧めする。

The first entry in the Pixel Pulps series of visual novellas by LCB Games. The story is great fun, a playful, yet also impactful, piece of pulp science fiction. The game revels in its comic book-like pulpiness! And yet, at the same time, the writing is superb, in a way that elevates it out of its specific genre and it becomes, simultaneously, a reflection upon that which it is celebrating and playing with, an artistic feat that can only be accomplished by people who love what they’re doing. It’s a delight. The pixel art, though not as refined as their latest game, Grizzly Man, is fantastic. And the player interface and overall design - which they seem to use across the whole Pixel Pulps series - is a dream. Finally, I much prefer the card game, and a puzzly shooter mini game, to the mini games in Grizzly Man. I’m excited to play their other two games.

Wow, so this is Pixel Pulp, eh? It's something between a comic and an interactive puzzle.

It's a very short experience, but very well drawn.

This can easily be played in a single sitting over a period of about an hour or two. In the time it'd take to watch a cheesy Netflix film you can experience MOTHMEN 1966.

The story is absolutely bonkers. I mean, the plot all over the place. There are no answers here, only questions, all the way through. Playing the game is almost like watching an episode of Twilight Zone or something, except there's no narrator who can try to make sense of it all.

There are a few sections in the game where you're tasked with a puzzle or challenge and it takes very straightforward logic to figure it out. The game is forgiving in this way, in that you'll die a lot but it's very easy to just go back and try again. I failed a lot of times at different challenges, but trying them to completion never seemed too frustrating of a task.

I thought it was neat but the story is just all over the place. It's extremely pulp. It's like, there's a mothmen part, but then there's this whole other side plot about weird guns and strange grandmothers and abusive relationships..and each are just as important as the other within this crazy plot.

I liked it all, the graphics, the experience, etc and I can even go with the pulp of it all because I have a large collection of EC Comics, Eerie comics, Creepshow comics at home, but even I have a hard time coming to terms with *all of these crazy things all happening at once*.

This is the first in a series of Pixel Pulp games here on Steam, and I played this one first after reviews showed it to be the roughest of the three. But the art is real impressive.

A short narrative adventure with tons of style and atmosphere. The story is horror themed on a very pulp way, focusing on the characters as the horrors lurk on the fringes of our view, mostly to save on budget for films but a mark of the genre by now, and masterfully used here, it uses the troopes of the characters you would expect from this story and makes them more complex, it´s very interesting. The art deserves a mention but off course you are seeing them on the store page, it´s amazing how accurate to the old computer games it ressembles, but off course it has a more modern approach to the framing, making it more cinematic. There´s also some mini-games involved, they add some challenge and some fun, plus the variety is welcome and they don´t stay their welcome. One of them even has an achievement for digging into it and it was fun.

My only complain would be that it was very short, but since It´s the first in a series of anthologies and it has a really low price, plus made by a small indie, that only makes me want to play the rest. It was a really good surpraise of a game, I rate it a 1964 movie you saw on 1997 on your grandma´s house while your parents went to a party and you´ve being chasing your whole life to find it, then one day randomly it appears on a streaming platform you hardly ever check and guess what? It was worth it, all to get back to the past for a brief moment, where you were loved and there were no worries... are this rates getting to long? Nah, they are perfect, shut up.

так сильно меня не вкатывала игра давно.

загадки простые, геймплей тоже, но боже - просто ебейшая графика в сочетании с ебейшим саундтреком и еще более ебейшим повествованием. история не несет в себе ничего нового или чего-то супер оригинального, но мысли каждого персонажа НЕВЕРОЯТНО интересно слушать. я не знаю - похожий ли это жизненный опыт или талант сценариста (ки?) - но каждый человечек отозвался в глубине души своей проблемой, с каждым захотелось закорешиться и послушать еще, что придало всей истории в целом какой-то очень теплый вайб.

отдельные очки за глупенький юмор и за возможность шарашиться в карты до посинения.

Great pixel art. The audio is good in moments but some of the sound choices are absolutely grating because of how long they go on (you can hear some of it first thing in the trailers). But the game crashed on me an hour in and there is no auto save or continuation from last completed chapter. Maybe I’ll try again in a year or two.

It is not easy to mix storytelling, player choices and gameplay. Maybe the characters talk to themselves a little too much, maybe we don't have enough background to care about them, but the game manages to show us a few characters, with different personalities and each with a strong voice. Hello, here are my thoughts for this piece.

Mothmen 1966 is a great narrative adventure, that takes place in ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ during 1966. You play as three characters, changing the perspective as the story advances. It's a very unique approach to visual novels. The game follows an understandably cryptic plot, and you are challenged throughout by unique and difficult puzzles.

However, the game has flaws. For one the plot is well very deep, and you explore it well, it's paced horribly. This pacing issue continues into the puzzles. Both the plot and puzzle difficulty advances at an unyielding and incredibly fast pace. This game should have been given more time then what it has.
There are sequences, where the writing borders on the edge of annoying, and not in a well written annoying character way. The puzzles go from very easy at first, to far more complex almost instantly, and do not maintain a curve of difficulty. I was able to get each one without looking up the answer, so they are very doable for a skilled puzzle solver.

I would recc the game if you're interested in taking a dip into the Mothmen myths, but not if you're in for the novel aspects. Certainly, if you're in for an intermediate level puzzle game. It also has an incredible UI.

Die Story ist gemäß der Vorgabe „Groschenroman“ sehr trashig und super unterhaltsam, die Charaktere sind mysteriös und machen neugierig. Aufhänger ist aber natürlich die großartige Optik. Muss man drauf stehen, ich halte die an den ZX Sprectrum angelehnten Bilder für absolut fantastisch. Lief mühelos am Steam Deck – Daumen hoch! 😊🔥

Victoria struggles with her desire for independence despite the fact that it looks like she'll be stuck with Lee

[*] As such, the vibes got better as I played on. I went in expecting a campy horror story, and while that's more or less what I received, the unexpected writing quality really lifted the whole experience

[*] Being a visual novel, gameplay is almost entirely composed of dialogue choices. You get transported from scene to scene while occasionally getting the option to pick something to say or do
[*] Given that there are murderous cryptids about, poor choices will result in a game over. It's not all bad, though, as you get to see a unique game over screen and get an achievement if you fail
[*] In addition to the story, [i]Mothmen 1966[/i] comes packaged with a little game called impossible solitaire, which is featured in the first Holt chapter
[*] It plays out like a standard game of pyramid solitaire, but when you draw a new card, you have to correctly choose the color to keep playing
[*] It sounds beatable in principle, but I didn't get closer than 4 cards remaining after a dozen attempts

Another very solid entry in the "Pixel Pulp"-series. The writing and old-school computer graphics artstyle and sound design are fantastic. It's a short game that you probably finish in one sitting (an hour and a half) and then some more if you want to mop up the achievements you missed.

This game has cool ideas and fun puzzles with a strange, somewhat complex cast. But we don't get to spend enough time in the garden to see the flowers bloom, so to speak. This is this dev group's first game in their series and it shows. While enjoyable, it's hard to justify the full price for about 2-3 hours of content, though the awesome art itself almost makes up for it. ;)

Their other games gave me more to think about once the credits rolled, especially Varney Lake. This is interesting, since the negative comments on -that- game say that this one is better, and I have to disagree. While Mothmen was more exciting on a scene-to-scene basis than than Varney, Varney and Knights gave me more of a lasting impression. They had more to say about life and hardship, while in this game things just kind of ... happen ... to a group of interesting people.

I look forward to more of these titles overall and you should check them out. Just maybe don't start with this one?

Juego corto pero divertido, no es lo que esperaba, quizás me ha faltado algo pero no sabría decir el qué. Más duración igual lo habría arruinado pero quizás me ha faltado un poco más de cogerle cariño a los personajes. Dicho eso para lo que cuesta te vas a echar unas 2-3 horas entretenidas.

A 2 hours visual novel with a few short puzzles sprinkled in-between. If you fail, you can instantly retry, so the experience wasn't frustrating at all. The art is delightful & the mystery is quite interesting! The writing itself is decent, but nothing amazing, it's a pulp after all. I liked most of the characters besides - spoiler: [spoiler] Lee [/spoiler]

If you're looking for a short experience for a weekend or an evening with some spooky 1960s vibes, I definitely recommend it! Check out the other games from these devs too! They have two other similar games with completely different mysteries & story! (Varney Lake & Bahsen Knights)

Ya arranca siendo un juego con tres estrellas en la camiseta y ademas un muy buen aspecto visual.
La historia te agarra desde el comienzo con Holt y su pasado, el avance es bastante rapido, casi como estar mirando una pelicula de terror.
Recomendable si te sobran unos pesos y sos fan del pixel art. (pongan el idioma en español para bardos en argento)

Oh I love me some Cryptids and the Mothman myth is easily in my top 5.
It's a really nice, spooky, pulp fiction game with a lot of retro flair which can be played through in less than 2 hours.
It's fun and I highly recommend watching the credits until the end ;)

b) You can capture some [i]spectacular[/i] screenshots - by that, I mean combinations of [i]pretty intense[/i] graphics with some [i]pretty great[/i] text - with this game.

La verdad, una maravilla, la historia extremadamente atrapante e interesante, personajes entrañables con buen trasfondo y personalidades, una escritura y descripciones completas y bien llevadas, estilo visual pixel-art muy bien distinguible y llamativo, todo el conjunto de este juego es espectacular y hecho con bastante cariño.

No es el tipo de novelas que tenga cambios drásticos por cada decision, pero si da la oportunidad de inmersión con los protagonistas y de descubrir mas lore. Además cada tanto introduce variedad con situaciones diferentes.
Recomendadisimo, en serio lo vale totalmente, no solo por ser argentino sino también por ser un juegazo inolvidable.

Just completed this and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, what a game! And that ending lol. The whole thing is just a truly chill experience, bringing to mind a Tales of The Crypt style comic I used to read here in the UK as a kid called Scream! The setting, the story, the music and fun little mini games, the pixel art aesthetics (I grew up with a Commodore 64 so I love it)... I honestly can't recommend this enough. And although I don't think it's officially verified for Steam Deck, it plays perfectly on it. Been playing this one a lot in bed at night and it's been seriously brilliant. You really do feel like a kid again reading a horror comic by torch light under the covers! Very happy I have these guys other two games still to play now! Well done to everyone involved, you guys have a new fan!

Very anticlimactic. The story just abruptly ends. Like a demo, although it's full game. Either the story will continue in follow-up game or the devs thought that it's ok to end this way. It's very unsatifying. So much more could be said and explored. I can't recommend it at all. Such a frustrating experience.

要說是像素風也可以，但是是非常老的那種.
想體驗1966年風的遊戲可以玩玩；

This game is more like an interactive comic. It is short, but it doesn't feel like it should be longer. There are some mini-games and choices to make it interactive, but they don't feel very closely tied to the narrative. The story is interesting, and it combines the Mothman, men-in-black, the Civil War, and lots of others things. I don't know if it all fits together neatly, but there is a lot of lore packed in here. The artwork looks GREAT!

Mothmen 1966 est un jeu d'aventure fort recommandable. Il vous faudra vous acclimater au design en gros pixel arts et à la quadrichromie (rouge noir, vert et bleu clair). Cependant, si vous passez outre le premier choc graphique, vous découvrirez une DA absolument superbe avec une caractérisation des personnages bien définie, un fil narratif pour une fois, remarquablement bien écrit et une aventure fantastico horrifique qui sait bien gérer ses ambiances et ses moments de stress. Le jeu se finit en 2-3 heures, ce qui est relativement court mais permet au passage de vivre une aventure passionnante d'une traite.
Attention, il est fortement addictif, une fois que vous aurez pénétré dans l'histoire, vous serez irrémédiablement aspiré par le récit et vous n'aurez qu'une envie, finir le jeu pour en connaitre la conclusion.
Un jeu bref mais intense, soutenu par une bonne histoire et des personnages bien écrits et définis.
Que demander de plus. Et pour une fois vous connaîtrez la satisfaction de la complétude. Enfin un jeu terminé dans mon backlog !

It's a very strange game. I don't think it will be to the taste of many but I found the mystery compelling and surreal. I do think there's some elements of the interactivity that could be improved. Fiddling with menus can get tedious at times but otherwise it's a very interesting experience.

I think that's the way to describe it. It's an experience. You either find it compelling or you don't. It's short enough to not overstay its welcome.

This game is trying to do some interesting things, but it really just fails at most of them. The art style is interesting, and it's a throwback to classic games, but the interactivity of the menus and interfaces suffer because of that retro-style. In the modern day, creating an interface that lets you interact with the puzzles more intuitively should not be compromised because of art style. You can have both.

The story is weird. The characters are all basically unlikable, the relationships are needlessly complicated, and the plot itself is hanging on by a thread.

My biggest issue, though, regardless of interface or story, is the way that there appears to only be one right path most of the time, and choosing the other options will either get you killed (over and over again, especially with some of the unintuitive puzzles) or will just funnel you back into the "correct" path and basically call you stupid for trying something different.

I can tell this game was made with passion. The dev(s) definitely seem to be familiar with the Mothman mythology - at least in passing - but the story takes on insanely convoluted and downright silly turns, for seemingly no reason. It's a game that is simultaneously trying to present genuine drama and complex character interactions while also using some of the goofiest nonsense storytelling I've ever seen.

If you're in for a laugh and you don't mind replaying the same sections over and over (because of dying to things while you try to figure out the correct option to click), give it a shot. Don't expect it to be interesting or fun.
