Modbox, developed and published by Alientrap, occupies an interesting space between game and creative toolkit, offering players a flexible sandbox where the primary objective is not to complete predefined goals but to invent their own experiences. It is less concerned with delivering a curated adventure and more focused on giving players the means to experiment, build, and interact within a physics-driven environment. From the outset, it becomes clear that this is not a traditional game in the usual sense, but rather a platform that depends heavily on player imagination to reach its full potential.
At its core, the experience revolves around creation. Players are placed into an open 3D environment and given a broad set of tools that allow them to manipulate objects, construct scenarios, and design interactive systems. One of the most notable aspects of the game is its visual scripting feature, which enables users to define behaviors and logic without requiring formal coding knowledge. This system opens the door to a surprising level of complexity, allowing for the creation of mini-games, puzzles, or experimental mechanics. While this flexibility is one of the game’s greatest strengths, it also places a certain expectation on the player to actively engage with its systems rather than passively consume content.
The physics engine plays a central role in shaping the experience, providing a consistent and often playful foundation for experimentation. Objects react naturally to forces and interactions, encouraging players to test ideas, build contraptions, and explore cause-and-effect relationships. This sense of physicality becomes particularly compelling in virtual reality, where direct interaction with the environment enhances immersion and makes even simple actions feel tactile and engaging. The VR implementation is one of the game’s defining features, turning the sandbox into something that feels closer to a hands-on creative space than a conventional digital environment.
Multiplayer functionality adds another dimension, allowing players to share their creations and collaborate in real time. This transforms the sandbox from a solitary workshop into a social playground, where ideas can be developed collectively or experienced together. Whether constructing elaborate setups or participating in user-created activities, the presence of other players can significantly enhance the overall experience. Integration with community sharing systems further expands the available content, offering access to a range of creations that help mitigate the absence of structured, built-in gameplay.
Despite its strengths, Modbox is not without its challenges. The reliance on player-driven content means that the experience can feel sparse for those who are not inclined toward creation. Without a strong set of predefined activities or guided objectives, new players may struggle to find direction, especially in the early stages. Additionally, while the tools are powerful, they are not always immediately intuitive, and mastering them can require a degree of patience and experimentation. This learning curve can be a barrier, particularly for players expecting a more accessible or immediately rewarding experience.
Another factor that shapes the overall impression of the game is its development state. Having spent a long period in Early Access with relatively limited ongoing updates, it can feel somewhat static compared to other sandbox platforms that have continued to evolve over time. The foundation is solid, but there is a lingering sense that the game could have grown into something more expansive with additional support and refinement. This does not diminish what is already present, but it does highlight a gap between potential and realization.
Visually, the game adopts a clean and functional style that prioritizes usability over artistic ambition. The environments and assets are designed to support creativity rather than stand out on their own, resulting in a presentation that is clear but somewhat plain. In VR, this simplicity works to the game’s advantage, making interaction straightforward and reducing visual clutter. On desktop, however, the lack of visual flair can make the experience feel more like a toolset than a fully immersive game world.
In the end, Modbox is best understood as a creative platform that offers a wide range of possibilities without dictating how they should be used. It provides the tools for players to build and explore, but it leaves the responsibility of finding meaning and enjoyment largely in their hands. For those who enjoy experimentation and user-generated content, it can be a deeply engaging and rewarding space. For others seeking structured gameplay or a more guided experience, it may feel incomplete or difficult to fully connect with.
Rating: 7/10
No longer in development
good game but never seen a update
Just make it a game engine already.
idk i think i have wasted my money on this one, first it seems it was everything that i was expecting in a map creator, but then it was not, the game has potential tho, hope it gets updates
Great idea. I think this game was a bit too early? Today, with larger user-base I think it might have been a success-story!
This is pretty crazy; I feel like I'm playing a mash-up of Dreams, Garry's Mod, Game Builder Garage and Minetest. In short, it's a creative person's dream mod simulator, but it feels almost like a complete game engine with prebuilt objects and visual scripting.
I'm sure I've only scraped the surface in my adventures, so this review will absolutely be updated in the future, but my lengthy 7+ hour first impression has been nothing but "Wow, that's surprisingly deep". There's a lot of interesting potential in the realms of 3D modelling, voxel sculpting, scripting, modding and borderline prototypal game development all right inside of a neat little 'mod' box.
Also, I was surprised that it runs on all of my (admittedly lo-spec) systems without any issues; even my best setup falls way under the recommended system requirements and I can build anything I want without losing frames or having anything go south. This thing is extremely optimized, and you don't see that everyday.
this is some seriously valuable stuff
Great toolbox/game/game maker(?) for those who find Unity or Unreal too complicated. I was hopeless with Unity/Unreal but made fully functioning D&D style dungeons with enemies and traps in a matter of hours.
crappy game with no people and jank as hell DO NOT PLAY THIS ♥♥♥♥
My biggest issue is that they broke compatibility with much of the older creations made prior to 2.0. Since Steam forces you to run the latest version of everything (which I am not a fan of)... older creations are busted forever. They should have included some type of compatibility mode. Otherwise, I cant trust anything that exists now will be available in the future.
this game is cool but i think that lowering the price would be a smart idea as this has been out for a long time and sandbox games like this are heavily reliant on players and their creations
To little players
im having issues with my arms. They dont go to the ground all the way and my legs are always bent i recalibrated height. Re did the oculus guardian. But still this doesnt fix it. The arms are the most annoying they dont reach the ground all the way as in they stop at a certain point even if my real arms havent touched the ground.
epic
I love the concept. I hope development continues especially on area like dialog generation. I've love their gpt-3 demo. Hopefully a locally running version can be created.
this game was not good i can see other people liking it but i personaly don't sorry
I don't think I've ever laughed so hard while crashing my computer.... This game is hilarious! My kids absolutely love it.
They really need to make more VR games that let you play with people on the desktop locally.
This game is honestly one of the best games I've played in a while. It's left an impact on my life as well as my friend's. It may seem like it's lame due to the graphics in some places, but put on some intense music and hop into Gravity Gun Deathmatch with some friends, you'll see what i mean.
The building mechanics for Gravity Gun Deathmatch are so fun to use, especially paired with the concrete building sound effect that's in the game. If you really want to crank up the fun, add an Expanded Environments Pack and then try out Hellscape or Acid Rain as your Environment while you play, firing explosive barrels at eachother. I also really love the explosion effect that was given to the barrels on this one, it gives it a very nice feel.
Another Favorite of mine is the Bar Fight(found in the community tab). It's so much fun to just chaotically get 3 friends or so in the game and go absolutley crazy with it. The sound effects again, for this one are very fitting, with chaotic sounds of metal clanking and people hitting eachother. It's great to go crazy in.
About the actual game itself, it's made very well. You can see that effort was put in, even though it's still in Early Access. The Building Mechanics are almost uncomparable to gmod. The UI is actually really great. Simple, minimalistic style, easy to look at and understand. I can really build anything I'd like in modbox, which I know is not a new thing, as it's existed in popular titles such as Gmod, but this is a very well made and more up to date game.
As it says on the store, this game is also made for VR. It's made very well for vr, and it's great and unique that this is a game for both PC and VR. It is made very well on pc, as well as it's made for virtual reality. It really pushes the possibilities and shows what can be done.
If you want to know more about what you can actually create in ModBox, you can see many examples in their trailers of how the game works, especially their recent 2.0 trailer. You can build anything using the built-in assets provided, and it feels pretty much limitless. There's of course also programming and settings elements, as i've played with putting sound effects in the game, changing environments, making chracters do specific things, invisible walls, giant scoreboards, the list can go on, this game is practically endless. It's honestly amazing.
There's also a survival mode, which is kind of similar to games like Rust and Minecraft, where you can fight zombies, while you build new things out of the surrounding materials, which consists of wood, rocks, plants, food, exc. You can even change your avatar to whatever you'd like, creating a lot of fun and uniqueness for friends. I don't know if i mentioned this either, but the game has a built-in voicechat feature, making it super easy for friends to play with eachother. I have 3 friends that i've been commonly playing this game with for the past few days, and we've straight up had an absolute blast playing around with it, and trying out all the different developer-made and community-made games, such as (in order of favorites) Gravity Gun Deathmatch, Shooting Range, Bar Fight, The Price is Right, Death Run, Prop Hunt, Hockey Rink, Open Roads, and more.
This game is really full of so many things, and I highly suggest you spend your $15 on it, and if you want to play sometime HMU on discord, my tag is HypnoStellar#0001. You'll really enjoy this game if you check it out, and give it a chance. Thank you to the developers for making it, it's brightened up my life and I've had a ton of fun playing it. Thank you!!
super
ok so, there are not that many mods ( i only care about them bc i dont know how to code) but its still awsome
thats all i have to say
nice game i also like playing this on vr.
ive played 84 hours i thought i should help the community out so i thought to add many assets so they can use it or modded it in there project
Great game.
I'd compare this game to a VR GarysMod. The only thing really missing from this game is the community and marketing.
i like it ps cats rock!
garbage i dont like it 95% its games are vr only 5% are pc allowed i dont recommend this game
Trash game, even worse devs. This game has been taken off the market before for a reason, don't bother. Dev can reply and be buttmad but all you gotta do is check the updates (what few there are lol) to see this boy lying
Update:
Game is dead

not that easy to play in VR, currently.
no
Allow users to make custom items and playermodels, prefabs are only fun for a certain length of time.
EDIT: This game is good, it had a lot of game development tools and some great pre-made games, VR support is among the best I've played (not too laggy, pretty clear, and the controls don't suck). My only problem with the game was LAN support (see below) which the dev responded to faster than most people I know. The best thing this game has is a good dev. This is someone who really wants to make a good game, something you don't see anywhere anymore. This game is an investment for your VR setup, buy it now while its still cheap.
Disregard all this junk v
[strike] Potentially a masterpiece. This game is great, its full of powerful game development tools and has great options for beginners and experienced designers. Unfortunately, its shortcomings become apparent when you try to play the games on LAN. The biggest potential for gameplay here are VR/PC crossplay modes. What this game really needs is a second free client for connecting to LAN servers, no editing or starting games on your own, just a very light version of the game for connecting to LAN. This would bypass the glitchy splitscreen/streaming issues (as well as screencheating) and allow for a more streamlined experience. I can't justify a $14 game to friends when they're only going to use it at LAN parties. Another potential fix would be to stream only each player's screen to their computer with Remoteplay, however Remoteplay isn't advanced enough to do that. I will definitely keep up with this game and I really hope they take these changes to heart.
TL:DR: Amazing potential for a game, but it needs some changes to be a true gem. [/strike]
i love this tool
One of the best VR creation engines with block scripting, game asset importing, and physics interactions all in a multi-player environment.
dobr
The game is fun, me and my friend played for hours making our own map. It's cool that you can also just mess around on other worlds if you didnt want to create anything. The only downside is that the workshop for this game isnt big because it hasn't gotten the kind of community and notice that it deserves. I usually never post reviews but I'm hoping this small review will attract more players.
EDIT: Sadly it's been abandoned.... :/
Modbox is a game i knew about since late 2017. This game blew me away cos it was a game where i could create anything i want but in VR (and in non-VR). You can create things like Singleplayer Campaigns, Deathmatch styled creations, Creations where you climb things and some other things. Sometimes it's also cool to just mess around in this as you can play around with physics and make functional vehicles. You can import your own assets or even use the SDK to make your own mods for others to use.
This is a game i really recommend but it's also one of those games where you need to have some creativity cos in terms of content, there isn't much cos of the small community. The game's performance also varies depending on the creation so some may have performance issues and some might not.
But yea. do give Modbox a try but also give the creation tools some try cos this game isn't just about playing the creations but also about creating your own.
This is probably the most underrated game I have played. The creation tool is amazing and can pretty much make anything you want if you know the block language that comes with the game. Also really fun game with friends just to hop in and play the multiplayer games and just mess around in sandbox. The only problem I have with the game is that there is really no community behind it creating games I would love to see more games in the workshop menu other then that perfect game and a perfect idea.
A better Roblox and Gmod mixed
it's the best thing ever
I have tried a lot of VR creative development programs and 3D modeling applications,
but there's something sweet about modbox for me.
I don't know if it's the easy satisfaction of just hopping in and creating something fun out of a template, and making my own little flair with it.
Or that it's just very easy to learn the basics to get you started quick, but it also has many elements for a much more involved development for those who are more savvy and like to dig a little deeper.
For fun, i tossed my 5 year old in the Giant template game and ran around on desktop as he tried to squish me in VR.
Can't wait to see some of the creations people come up with now that it's updated to MODBOX 2! :D
Great game. Needs more players. But there's a good few single player experiences that are pretty fun for a bit that I've tried. If you like modding or making games (think roblox game making) this is probably going to get your game design bone rock hard. :D
Very intuitive and great price considering the amount of content
fajne
There were only two people when i joined.
For anyone wanting to play a better VR Garry's Mod along side desktop players, this is 100% for you. One might even call this the Hytale of VR. A must have game for VR owners, especially if you want to play with your non-VR buds.
I really hope more people pick this up to get the workshop more populated. (fyi, I'm posting this a week after the second release, so there hasn't been a ton of time for folks to populate the workshop)

So this is more of a modding software / sandbox than a proper game creation engine. As long as you accept the limitations of this tool, it can be enjoyable to make something yourself, even if it is ultra simple. However, this game / app would benefit greatly from some in-game tutorials that teach you from start to finish how to use the different tools available while making one of the featured games.
The featured game creations are nice and you can sort of reverse engineer them. At least see how some of the different systems work. I especially enjoyed the sandbox aspect using some of the tools available. My favorite toy was the terrain making tool. I sort of felt like iceman as I ran along to areas where I was making new terrain. Then on the other hand, I had a gravity gun where I was grabbing explosive barrels and throwing them against the terrain to destroy it. Creation on one hand and destruction on the other equaled total mayhem. The game featuring these tools is actually a multiplayer game and it seems like it would be a fun MP game to play ... if anybody else was online to play with.
I never saw anybody online during any of my time with this game. So if you want to do any of the multiplayer features, you better bring a friend along. You can even create a game together or you can use the desktop version.
This app / game is running on the Unity Engine. I was getting anywhere from 45 to 90 frames per second on my 1060 GTX. The game did stutter at times. However, given the totally destructible environments and some of the cool tools, like the gravity gun, it's kind of surprising that this ran relatively well.
My biggest criticism of the game, besides the lack of tutorials, is the poor controls. It uses a wheel system for tool selection that is just not very smooth or polished to use. While some experiences do have full locomotion, there is only snap turning available. On the Oculus Rift, that is mapped to the A or X button, which is never a good idea.
Despite the problems with this tool, I did have fun. There's a surprising amount of variety with the different systems available to play with. You can even use ground vehicles or flying ones. Unfortunately, you do need to learn the scripting language in order to do anything other than very basic modding.
Rate 6.5/10. I bought this back in 2017 for $7.49 USD during a Steam sale. I would say I got my money's worth already.

After talking with the developer (see the comments), I can recommend this for some specific uses:
1. Cooperative making of small games
2. Prototyping with immediate multiplayer testing
3. Testing asymmetric VR concepts quickly
4. Visual scripting in VR (personally I don't think this is worth doing, but maybe some people are into that)
Probably the biggest negative point I found in my limited playtime is clunky UI.
Amazing game-making software with integrated Multiplayer and VR mode.
one of the best ways to be creative with VR.
Awesome potential
Very interesting game, has no players though.
We should change that
PROS:
+ this is a massive improvement over Modbox 1.0. It looks much better, slightly easier to learn, and even more versitile
+ very easy to create your own worlds and set the physics type of all the objects
+ the game looks beautiful, and is easy to make creations look pretty
+ Workshop support. Need I say more?
+ I would absolutely describe this is as a direct Garry's Mod competitor. And with VR support, I can't say no
CONS:
- there are a few layering issues, certain menus display over other even though they should be layered behind
- I think there should be a locomotion mode like VRchat, where you see your player walk to the place you want to be. Like teleporting, but allow rotation as well!
- perhaps a fully-fledged tutorial on how to build stuff. It's not too intuitive, but easy to do when you know how. SoundStageVR did this very well
If you like Garry's Mod, you'll love this. It just takes a little getting used to. The developer's YouTube channel is a great place to look!
A game where you can create games, or download those made by the community. This is the first PC game creation game that I can see a single person being able to use to create just about any game they can imagine. Much like Project Spark and Dream, this game tries to simplify the game creation process. However, no matter how much they try to simplify things, you're still trying to make a video game. Possibly one of the most complex and challenging tasks someone could take on. Especially if you're trying to make all parts of the game yourself. The only limitations with this game engine is the graphics (tho you could technically make all your own ultra realistic assets) and the limited players on multiplayer, it's current limit is 10 players but according to the devs it could be pushed to a hundred or more.
can't wait to finish learning to use this software, it seems to have nearly no limits. I hope they allow players to create games as standalone a executable to be put on steam (perhaps they take a royalty on sales or something I dunno) it would be cool and inspire more small game creators to use this software and really push it.
really good
Modbox is the original make VR in VR, and the dev is always pushing the next step in Mixed Reality experiences and production. I've actually got a ton more hours logged in another account and have had so many good times making up new games and experiences with friends passing around the headset. Not happening now with COVID so I'm really excited to see what Modbox 2.0 will bring.
way better!
This isn't that fun. Unable to be (easily) optimized due to the fact that the game is designed to be early garry's mod for VR. The one game or scene that I had the most fun in was almost too dark to actually play.
very epic
This game is a lot a fun if you are a creative person.
yas
underrated sandbox game, is epic
Good Gam, Recommend
Dead game
abandon
good game my only problem with it is the controls, had to change them up.
i would like a refund
It really really sucks that not a lot of people play this game. It is so much fun to just create dumb contraptions that throw things or whatever. This game has the potential to blow up. (again?)
9.1/10

Very good Sandbox game. Might not be as fleshed out as Anyland, but still is super worth a looksie. Great workshop support.
Game looks promising. Only problem is movement is a nightmare on oculus rift..worse than any vr game ive ever played.
There is no free locomotion and turning...I have to go into menus to move or rotate..insanely over complicated.
Why is there no simple movement with thumbstick...this is a joke. Uninstalling fast!
hey
Unfortunately, for some reason, this game makes me sick after a short while, even though almost no other game causes this. Might be because of micro-stuttering. Would probably be better if it supported the Oculus SDK.
Truly Amazing! Build your own mini game or try countless others already made and enjoy infinite variety and fun!
This game is a absolute must buy if you have friends to play it with and a love for Garry's mod, it is literally Vr Gmod. The only problem is the community for this game is slim to none with barely no one online ever and that is really a shame because this game could have so much good potential for really fun community made maps and mods. So in conclusion it's a really fun game it just needs more of a community.
Please pretty please add teleport.... the movement gives me motion sickness. Really want to be able to use this to design terrain for a tabletop game but I played less than 30 mins feeling nauseous...help
Interesting early attempt at a VR sandbox UGC platform, but it's really not worth it in the current year.
Muiltiplayer is super dead, so if you have noone to play this with you i wouldnt recommend it. As for gameplay, i couldnt tell you, seeing as i havent been able to play with anyone. Judging this game on a single player experience would be dumb.
Great game for creating alot of scenarios and such also fun to just kill your friends in random places :)
I'm new to VR, but addicted, love Google Earth VR, Raw Data and Elite, and of course The Labs have all been great introduction. I'm a newbie in the environment, so take this review with that in mind. I'm only 1.5 hours in to this, but I think this is absolutely awesome.
I've seem comparisons to Gary's Mod, but I think this is so much more accessible and so much easier to create an environment/game too. Found some existing free creations to download for it like the Temple Climb that are such fun to play, and there is no reason I can't go and create my own version. Just wonderful. Your imaginations you're only limit.
I bought it in a sale at £3.74, but feel I've had my moneys worth already. That's cheaper than a PC games mag (which I'd probably read in about an hour) or even comics for the kids (who just want the plastic toys and don't even read them). At full price it's a bargin even though it's early access.
You need this more than you need food to survive

Great game, it's gmod in vr. I would recommend to anyone who likes sandbox games and has a vr
Super recomendo!
I know I don't have a lot of hours played on Modbox so I do have a lot of experience. Judging from a first impressions, which is how this very short review will be based.
Right off the bat its a little confusing. Do the tutorial that they offer, it helps out a bit. The game doesn't seem to appealing and you might think its a bit boring knowing you need a tutorial. After the tutorial it gets better. If you have played Garry's Mod then this is basically the VR version. As for this game being a sandbox game its really fun. Installing fun little gadgets, tools and maps are decently simple. So, as a sandbox game, its great and worth the play.
Rating the game as a VR game is different. Again I don't have a lot of time spent so this is just a first impressions. As for a VR game its not all that good. It feels a bit complicated and clunky. A little difficult as well when you don't have a mouse and keyboard to use.
But as for a VR sandbox game, the game is enjoyable. Not unfun, and to the kind of game (for me at least) to spend more than one hour in at a time. Once you get a map/game mode made and decide what you want to create and have it created the game itself is already half played before you enjoy what you made. For Oculus users if you have played Oculus Medium this game features a map making tool similar to it.
All in all the game is fun to play for its price. I think $15 is perfect for what they have to offer. Anymore than $15 would be too much. Any less and I would have expected less of this game.
This game is great and fun. Although you should wait for they big update there working before geting the game.
EDIT : They updated the indev version with a lot of stuff like drag and drop code and resize from one way and more.
Gmod for VR!
So sad to see that there are ZERO players playing this otherwise wonderful game. It's only useful if there is a good playerbase. This game is DEAD.
.
