it's kinda fun, try it
Genial si te gusta la arquitectura de computadores y los lenguajes HDL. Has de hacer una pequeña CPU desde cero (solo con NAND construyendo todo) a través de pequeños ejercicios. Muy entretenido y divertido.
El único punto en contra es que si sabes un poco del tema se te hace corto el juego. Podría tener más cosas. Pero no está nada mal.

Disappointingly bare experience in the "from NAND to CPU" genre. You do get to build a CPU, but you don't get the satisfaction of actually seeing it do anything, programming it in any way. The prize for tediously rewriting the connections written out for you in the problem description into the syntax of a hardware description language is only a popup window with undecipherable testcases. At least I wasn't forced to go through these to actually find out what's wrong because just writing the connections given to you in problem description does complete every level fortunately.
Whatever you expect from this, you can get it better elsewhere: if you want a satisfaction of making a CPU from nand games look up NAND game online, it's free and you get to program your CPU and see it in action as well. If you want hardware simulator puzzles with a sandbox that will let you build whatever hardware you desire then wait for a discount on something bigger like Turing Complete. If you want to learn a hardware description language downlaod an actual hardware simulator and learn Verilog.
The final message in the game promises more content in a couple months. It's been 8 years. The game is still as mid as ever.

I really want to like this game, but it has so many flaws that make it a frustrating experience:
- The editor is pretty bad. No syntax highlighting, no error reporting, decent but annoying keybinds (just let me use TAB to indent). It has a maximum vertical height with no scroll support, meaning you have a limited amount of lines to work with. Want to add some extra comments? Tough luck, no space for that. Want to nicely format your code by putting each definition on its own line? Nope, you have to put some definitions on the same line because the dev was didn't implement a scrolling system. It makes it harder to reason about your code when you're trying to debug what you're missing, which leads nicely into the second point...
- There is 0 debugging or visualization functionality. This is especially painful at the last "level" where you make the second half of the CPU. If you've forgotten to wire up 1 connection, good luck figuring that out. There is no highlighting of a symbol when you put your cursor over it, no way of listing which connections of your components you've used, you can't view the internal state of registers during verification (why???) and there you can't view anything about the simulation except for what your inputs and outputs are. Expect to spend half an hour on the last level trying to find the last connection you're missing to make the verification pass.
- The whole game leads up to making a working CPU, except you don't actually do that. You make memory modules, an ALU, an instruction decoder, the execution unit, but then instead of then wiring it all together, you just get the ending screen?? This is incredibly unsatisfying, since you just spent a few hours building a CPU from NAND gates and you know each individual component works.
- The game is too short. Perhaps that's a side effect from "only" making a CPU and nothing else, but I expect that if you have some HDL/FPGA experience, you can beat this game within the return window.
- With the exception of some of the earlier modules, the instructions are written in a way where you don't feel like you "invent" anything; you're just following instructions. You can implement the entire instruction decoder and CPU by mindlessly translating the specification into gates and you'll have no idea why any of the design decisions were made. I bought this game with the intention of designing a toy CPU in FPGA later, but I'm writing this review right after finishing the game and I don't really feel like I'll remember any of it for later.
On the bright side, this game does provide a functioning CPU design (although you don't get to assemble it) which you can port to a HDL of your choice or implement in a tool where you can actually visualize what you're doing. You can write your own assembler for the instruction-set which sounds like a fun exercise too. If you have 0 experience with hardware design, this is probably a decent introduction, but I'm convinced there are other tutorials out there that may be better (Nand2Tetris anyone?).
Also, there are achievements. That's nice I guess. You don't have to do anything special to unlock them besides beating the game.

This game is short and a bit easy for someone that has taken any Digital Logic course. Still, I enjoyed playing and I feel a bit more confident in my knowledge of hardware components. As others have mentioned the advertised "20+ puzzles" only for there to be exactly 21 is comically deceptive marketing, but I went in knowing this was the case, so I don't mind.

Fun parts of the game:
You solve logical puzzles while learning how the computers work. The game is very rewarding.
In addition to main game goal (create a CPU) you can add competition and try to create the elements of the CPU using as few logical gates as possible.
Frustrating parts of the game:
As elements that you need to build get more complex, their descriptions become more and more vague. Sometimes it's very hard to understand what it is required from you. My advice would be just start implementing small things that you do understand and continue as it goes. Most of the times, after you get your working solution, you will wonder on simplicity of it (especially with RAM, DECODER and CPU itself).
Also sometimes you may realise that you had to put a MUX somewhere, or there was some more optimal way to solve the element, and now you need to rewire 5 or more contacts, which is not very convenient in the editor.
If you made a tiny mistake and there's no issue in compatibility of the buses, the debugging becomes hell.

I just bought this game and finished it in 2h15m. I can confirm what the other negative reviews say.
- The game is very short. The decription on Steam says "Create hardware designs based on more than 20 specifications". That's because there are exactly 21 levels in the game. That count includes 2 levels where you just build a 4-bit version of a 1-bit component you previously built (1-bit not -> 4-bit not, 1-bit and -> 4-bit and) by replicating the 1-bit component four times, so the actual number of "unique" levels is 19.
There are three more of these "wider version of previous component" levels (1-bit full adder -> 4-bit full adder, 2-to-1 mux -> 4-to-1 mux, 1-to-2 demux -> 1-to-4 demux), but those actually require additional effort than just replicating the 1-bit version 4 times, so I am willing to consider them unique.
The ending is abrupt. In one of the levels you build a RAM, and in the level where you build the CPU, the description talks about how some of the pins of the CPU are to be connected to RAM. So naturally you'd think that you'll have a level of connecting the RAM and CPU into a computer / SoC. But the CPU level is the last level so you never actually get that payoff.
- The final two levels of building the ALU and the CPU are very easy. Both are just a matter of transcribing the textual description of the level into HDL. The CPU has three inputs, four outputs and five internal components, and yet there is no challenge because the game spells out precisely which one to connect to which.
- You cannot write more than one screenful worth of code. This is mostly not a problem, but for the CPU level I was unable to leave empty lines between independent parts of the solution (for cleanliness) and instead had to smush everything together to fit. The game certainly supports multi-page text because the game's own level descriptions and manual use multiple pages and require scrolling, so it is a mystery why that is not allowed for your code.
- The UI is deliberately clunky (keyboard-only navigation, very few shortcuts in the text editor compared to a modern editor), but I'm willing to forgive that since it's not too bad. Other games like TIS-100 also have such clunky editors to fit the retro aesthetic. It is a pain that if you want to read the syntax manual or the schematics of another component, you have to switch away from your current solution pane; I resorted to taking screenshots and putting them on my other monitor.
- There is no audio other than a simulated hard disk drone and chunky keyboard sounds when you type; you may want to mute the game if you play it for a long time.
So if you want to learn about making a CPU, I second the recommendation in other reviews for the game Turing Complete. That game covers basic logic gates, larger components like muxes, combining those into a CPU, connecting that CPU to RAM and IO to make a full computer, and programming that computer in assembly to solve puzzles. Furthermore you build the circuits visually like a schematic diagram and thus learn better. MHRD at best is an introduction to an HDL language if you wanted to learn those, but any Verilog or VHDL tutorial would give you that.

Other reviewers pointed out the availability of similar premise games but with GUI. This goes for the more stylistic approach, with bare minimal controls and simulation of an old OS. I really enjoyed my time with it, except a bit on pre-last puzzle was confusing.
The good thing is, as you probably already know, it is actually applicable logic design and not some puzzles created just for the player.
I suspect they might have wanted to make an expansion of sorts, or maybe a dlc, or just update with more tasks, but never got to it.
Game is still good, grab it during a discount if you vibe with the style and idea behind it.

In MHRD your goal is to design computer hardware with something called a Hardware Description Language (HDL for short). If you don't know what that is or have never used one, the game contains a short tutorial and documentation that explains how to use it. This game's HDL is very simple compared to real-life HDLs like Verilog, so if you've written an HDL before, it may feel like you're taking a very abridged course on undergraduate CPU design. :)
Overall, it's not a very long game, but it probably will take you a few hours to get through it. I've played through the game 3 or 4 times now. If you're like me and you really enjoyed designing hardware with FPGAs but don't have time to do it anymore, I'd recommend trying out this game.

This game is pretty fun and simple to understand. It gets challenging eventually but you should be able to do everything if you spend enough time on it. It probably won't be very fun unless your into these types of games.

It guides you through the process of designing digital circuits, including logic gates, adders, counters, registers, memory, and even a working CPU. What makes this game unique is that it is entirely text-based, so you must describe your components instead of visualizing them. If you are a fan of logic, computers, and digital circuits, this game is sure to keep you engaged.
Game still needs some work, as it just randomly crashes, especially at the part of the tutorial with the NOT gate, I was really hopping this game could get me more into learning computer science, but it just keeps crashing at that NOT gate tutorial.

The reason I am giving it a thumbs down is not because it's a bad game, but a better version of it exists for free in https://nandgame.com/ which is part of a course called Nand To Tetris.
And there you can do things graphically whereas in MHRD you'll have to do it through text, which is less intuitive. If the developer implements graphical interface where we can drag and drop logic gates instead of describing it through text, I will give it a thumbs up.

If steam had a middle recommendation, I would rate it so. However, since we have a binary yes or no, I unfortunately have to say, no. The game is too short to be worth full price, maybe in a big sale it could be worth it.
The best thing this game has going for it is a simple, no-setup, one time payment EDA tool (most are very complex programs, with very expensive subscriptions). However, this tool is pretty incomplete, the biggest problem being the inability to design custom modules. The syntax is also pretty limited.
If you are really interested in messing with circuit design, I would recommend searching for a verilog tutorial online, and using edaplayground for designing. The only thing this game provides that the alternative doesn't is clear goals to strive for. However, you can probably still find some random university assignments online to design.

It's pretty fun if you enjoy zach-likes, but in comparison to most popular games in this genre, keep in mind that MHRD has barely any story. MHRD is basically NandGame, but with a custom hardware description language.
BTW, if you experience hanging or crashing, disable sound in settings.

It's hard to label MHRD as a game, it's closer to an interactive, minimally gamified university assignment.
MHRD will teach you how hardware circuits work, and how all of them can be traced back to boolean logic (aka the famous 0s and 1s). If you have a fundamental interest in electrical/computer engineering and don't mind the very basic presentation of it (the screenshots are basically all you'll see), then I can recommend it. If you look for something closer to the Zachtronics-style of puzzle games, then the lack of music, the UX, and its rather brief length might leave you longing for something more.
Probably a pretty niche audience for this one, but if you like the look of it, then you will almost certainly enjoy it. Each task is completed by entering your chosen component specs and connections using the text editor. You may want to use a pencil and paper to support your thinking and planning.

While not necessarily a bad game, MHRD is way too awkward to play, requiring you to draw your circuits on a piece of paper or if you already have an understanding of binary logic, visualizing everything purely in your head. Furthermore the game poses very arbitrary limitations like a line and character limit, only allowing for small mistakes or suboptimal solutions. A Syntax checker is your only actual 'debug' feature, if you can even call it that, and while you will see a list with every incorrect output of your circuits, the pages long test cases list is barely more than unhelpful.
Overall, the game feels more like you program in bad assembly from the 80's, so I guess that fits the theme, but not in a good way.
If you are already very familiar with binary logic and like brain teasers, you can give it a try.
For anyone else I would highly suggest taking a look at Turing Complete (link in the TLDR), which is a far more feature rich, fun and complete game, where even people new to binary logic can find fun and learn something.

Tal vez no este siendo justo dándole una calificación negativa. El juego se presenta como un simulador de diseño de hardware que te pone en la piel de un ingeniero de los años 80s trabajando para una empresa que tiene como objetivo diseñar su propio CPU. Como simulador es bastante bueno, la interfaz y el ligero zumbido de fondo de la maquina logran un ambiente bastante creíble, el problema radica justamente en que tal vez se tomaron la parte de simulador muy en serio, dejando de lado que se trata de un juego.
Normalmente los simuladores eliminan los aspectos molestos de una actividad y enfatizan en su lado mas entretenido y satisfactorio. Bueno, MHRD no hace esa distinción, te da el paquete completo, lo bueno, lo malo y lo feo.
Para empezar, puedes decirle adiós al mouse, la única manera de desplazarse por la interfaz es mediante el teclado, y esto puedo entenderlo, favorece la inmersión y finalmente no es tan necesario el cursor. Lo que si me parece sumamente incomodo e injustificado es lo mal pensados que están los atajos de teclado, pues van en contra de todo estándar que conozco en editores de texto. Por poner un ejemplo, TAB, que generalmente sirve para identar o abrir el menú de autocompletación aquí no hace ninguna de las dos cosas, simplemente cambia de pagina, y no hace falta mencionar lo inconveniente que esto puede resultar. Al menos Ctrl+Z/X/C/V funcionan como de costumbre. Otro inconveniente aquí es que la documentación también esta
En cualquier caso, puedo perdonar la interfaz, después de un tiempo te puedes acostumbrar a ella y la sintaxis es lo suficientemente sencilla como para no necesitar consultar la documentación tan constantemente. La razón principal de la critica negativa es que el juego en si no ofrece mucho que pueda poner del otro lado de la balanza y se queda corto cuando lo comparamos con sus competidores, ya sea que lo veas como juego, herramienta didáctica o como simulador, hay mejores opciones.
Un punto a favor que le puedo dar es lo bien que logra la inmersión, por desgracia no hay mucho mas que agregar. La "historia" es prácticamente inexistente, nada mas que mencionar. Los "puzzles" no son mas que la realización de los componentes básicos para crear un CPU, y una vez que tienes tu CPU... bueno eso es todo. Así que si ya conoces la arquitectura de un CPU y sus componentes no encontraras nada nuevo aquí. Y si eres alguien buscando aprender, como ya mencione, hay mejores opciones, pues la ausencia de una interfaz gráfica para visualizar la disposición de los componentes le quita una de las ventajas mas importantes que podría tener como recurso didáctico. Ademas de que en cada puzzle se te da información tal vez demasiado detallada de lo que tienes que hacer, sobre todo en los últimos componentes, al grado de que podrías terminar un nivel sin sabes exactamente como funciona un componente, simplemente siguiendo las instrucciones.
Así que si lo que quieres es un simulador de trabajo realista, perfecto, aquí lo tienes. Pero si quieres un juego de puzzles o un simulador donde puedas armar tus propios componentes y jugar con ellos, o si simplemente quieres aprender diseño de hardware, esta no es una bueno opción, no es precisamente mala, pero tampoco una que pueda recomendar.

I've played a bunch of these build-a-cpu games. I really enjoyed the minimalism and aesthetic of this one. Working in a hardware specification language is a nice change from a visual language that often gets used in these kinds of games. Not forcing the player to make 16-bit versions of everything is a nice choice as well that keeps the focus on the more interesting problems.
This game is fun but pretty short. Sometimes it doesn't do a very good job of explaining what it wants you to do.

I had fun but it's less of a game and more of a way to learn about some foundational hardware principles. I liked how it was essentially a series of puzzles that lead you to building a functional CPU however I think more "fun" elements could be introduced to make it more entertaining. As it is now, you either have to really enjoy puzzles or really like learning about hardware to slug through it. Quick little thing though, definitely worth the money.

Having worked with hardware and software engineering and enjoyed many Zachtronics-like games, I can say wholeheartedly I did not enjoy this game. This is not to say it's not without its merits, but many other reviews here already point out the source materials this game bases itself on and how little it improves on them.
What I would like to add in my review is that this game leans itself too hard on its text-based interface to its own detriment. There are almost no quality-of-life features to speak of, even ones that would be period correct to early 80s text editors or CAD software. I'm constantly reaching for the "tab" key for auto-complete, which sends me out of my work into another screen instead. The actual auto-complete is a two-finger "ctrl-space" salute which not once felt natural to me. Others have also mentioned that the documentation is only accessible in-game and switching between it and your current project is a chore. The game would do well to offer a PDF or even a TXT with the same contents so players could print it out as would be customary at the time, or even just read it in another window.
All in all, the logic gates puzzle genre has been done before and in more enjoyable interfaces as far as video games go. I cannot recommend this game if a pastime away from literal work is what you're looking for.

Build simple logic. Build some more complex logic. Build arithmetic components. Memory. translate opCodes. Boom, you've built a CPU.
It definitely changes your view of the process behind a simple CPU, effectively breaking it down to simpler pieces to work with, making you REALLY see the thinking behind such contraption. It's an educative experience I could recommend to anyone even slightly interested on the matter.
...is what I would say if the game didn't actively work against you, that is.
The specifications and instructions are only accessible through the in-game menu, and switching between them in a dual-screen setup gets tiring quick. You have one page to write your code, no scrolling. Even if all the solutions CAN fit into that one page, unless you actively think about optimizing, it's going to be unreadable as hell. I personally had no gripes with the added keystroke sounds, but I can't talk for everyone's mental state, and you should be able to mute it anyways. It also cuts down some elements of engineering, not helped by the fact that the arbitrary timing and the fact you can't write your own DFF, and the game giving you an artificial one.
What is helpful is that you can use tools outside of the game here to get rid of most of the annoyances here. Using pen/paper or a logic gate simulation site like [url=https://logic.ly/] logic.ly [/url] helps there to prototype the circuit before typing it out in-game. Taking a screenshot of the specification page to bring it out of the game, etc... Unfortunately I couldn't find a tool for the horrendous debugging. That thing is gonna exist in my nightmares from now on.
As much as I like bashing MHRD, it does what it set out to do, and I appreciate it what it has to offer. It's a different take on the subject, and can lay the groundwork for deeper learning, which is something I wish was more common. Games can be a powerful learning tool, even if the editor sucks ass.
Write your own CPU!
Wow, I can't begin to describe how rewarding this game is. Others with engineering degrees say that the HDL (Hardware Description Language) used in this game is very similar to that used in the real world, therefore imparting a great deal of real world education and job skill transfer. I have only been playing for about 13 hours, but I can tell you that you will be tasked with real world programming problems expressed in terms of how digital hardware digests inputs and outputs. If you like logic problems you'll be right at home.

A really good introduction to HDL and computer science!
This game was ALMOST everything I was looking for. The challenges were fun, the execution was simple and enjoyable, and the simplistic keyboard only design was nice.
The fatal flaw of this game is the limited space to create each part of the CPU. The process of writing comments and creating readable, easy to understand code was very fun. You can't do that once you get further into the game.
Not being able to organize my thoughts and only focusing on cramming the design on one page ruined it for me.

Не думав що можна створити гру, про створення компютера, причому зробити це так цікаво. Місцями є деякі челенджі, але їх можна пройти і не бути при цьому гуру компютерних наук. Рекомендую всім
This game lives in my head rent free. Put together a logic gate from NAND gates. Combine logic gates to make more complicated systems. Keep building on your past work, and see now many NAND gates your final designs take.
My only two problems are unavoidable. First, much of the game is solved. There are ideal ways to make an XOR gate, and they're well documented. At some level there's better ways to optimize certain structures, but at low levels, there's a floor.
And, unfortunately, that brings me to my second point: some people have found ways to make a gate that passes tests without being functionally correct. I mean, if it actually works in reality, congratulations, but in this game it means you'll never be able to judge your creations' efficiency because someone changed a building block, and they all stack differently now.
Small complaints, love the game, if you're a fan of programming games and CLI, this should be a good time.
WARNING:
The game relies on a Java Runtime Environment (JRE), but the one coming with the game doesn't seem to work on my system (Windows 10 Pro).
I was interested in a hardware design game, not some JRE compatibility puzzle...
Another game that confuses "tedious" for "challenging". MHRD leans so hard into its theme that it completely sacrifices interface: the manual is only accessible within the game and the entire interface is keyboard driven, so switching between the manual and the level you're working on is a screaming pain. Also, once you finish a level, you can no longer see the code you wrote for it, so you have to start from scratch each time.
Fastest and most fun way to revise how digital electronics work! You make a freaking CPU :)
This game was amazing. I got to build and understand stuff that mystified me for years.
Great game, learned a lot.
If the developer had continued developing, this could be great. As it is, get Turing Complete to learn and then Logic World to build things.
