A retro game based on Mystery Science Theater 3000. The game is short but the difficulty is no joke even on normal. Easy recommendation for MST3K fans.

All that's missing is the stunning conclusion to Hired!
very good
the movie is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ great if your drunk or high or somthing
you dont need any narcotics to enjoy the game
Waste of time.
Progress through the levels is too easy;
leading you into a false sense of security...
Boss's follow no pattern so you can't form much of a strategy. This results in
re-loading over and over again until that one time the boss's random choice of movements
allows you to get lucky.
MANOS replicates NES titles that got low review scores and turned up very quickly being kicked around the floors of Toys R Us with a Five-Dollar price tag on them.
It's an "Athena-Like."
Benbo's Quest, I Wanna Be The Guy & Eryi's Action made fun of these titles; allowing for easy solutions for those who thought outside of the box.
MANOS, instead, insists on holding seriously true to being 'that game' at the very bottom of 90's K.B. Toy store wire bins.
Unless you're under age Sixteen or are rich, single and without children, you're not going to have time for this.
This is the bad kind of Nintendo hard. Fun idea though.
A fun little Retro Pixel platformer from the same guys who made the AVGN video games. Takes you at most an hour to complete on the normal setting but the challenge is there in the Nightmare & Hardcore difficulty setting. The best thing about this is easily all the little references to the infamously "so bad it's good" movies like Plan 9 From Outer Space & Robot Monster featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000 on top of this entire game being based on Manos: The Hands of Fate. It feels very loving and well done, I'm sure director Harold P. Warren could never have anticipated his failed bet of a movie would be adapted into a video game, let alone a good one.
It's starts out really janky at first but you get used to the controls and start figuring everything out. It's harder than the first AVGN game. It has a lot of nostalgia of old MST3K movies. A really fun basic but good game of what the AVGN games would be.
great game. horrible movie :)
The first few levels are fun, but then it started to get annoying enough to make me quit and uninstall.
MANOS the hands of fate serves to be like Dragon ball evolution: a awful movie with a fairly redeemable game adaptation. Despite the movie's terribly poorly received reception and status as being one of the worst movies in history, it went on to have a (ironic) cult following and this game shows it none the better.
Manos (the game) is your run of the mill NES-style throwback in 8-16 bits, with platforming, shooting, and enemies & collectables galore. With various movie monsters of its era making cameo appearances, there's alot of charm into the creation of the game. Even moths (which unintentionally "cameo" in the original film itself as obstructive natural interruptions within the film's production on final cuts) are featured as enemies. most can be killed, but others cannot. The bosses also share alot of charm of classic 8-bit game sidescrollers.
The story of Manos unfolds just as it mostly does in the film: you play the role of a estranged man named michael who is set on ensuring his only wife and daugher (as well as his pet dog) seek refuge from being stranded in the desert. they meet a straw-hat pilgrim named torgo, who is later revealed to actually be the loyal servant of a deranged quasi-vampiric overlord, "the master". When his dog is killed and both of his loved ones go missing, michael forges in himself to investigate the mysterious shack, and take back his wife and daughter from the evil clutches of the things that lurk at night.
Serving as a tribute to cliche and bad movies of the 50s-70s, Manos features monsters that either have infamous reputation, are of a stock source, or fell into public domain like: slimes, the killer shrews, screaming skulls, flying eyeballs, crawling hands, hobgoblins, and Nilbogs!
The bosses take a step further, having the master's pet giant doberman and even the giant claw (la cargne) and Ro-man square up against the protagonist. Exclusive to the director's cut is a extra side-scrolling level featuring UFO saucers and a couple of zombified humans as bosses.
Though i have enjoyed managing to finally beat the game for once (which unlocks torgo as a playble character in a unique game run mode); its not without its fair share of extremely frustrating difficulties.
Akin to games of its time, Manos is designed to be extremely unforgiving at times, throwing enemies, obstacles, and death pits at your every whim. you'll have to be quick or careful as to not loose any of your lives for as much as you can, or else you'll start all over from the beginning of the stage. Should you be challenge hungry however, completing the game allows you to unlock three additional difficulties: Hard, very hard, and hardcore. these can also be selected for torgo mode.
to summarize; here's my pros and cons.
Pros:
-Fun and ingenious callbacks to tropes, cliches, and monsters of the 50s-70s film media
-a compelling game design worthy to be home-brewed onto a actual NES system
-a beautifully composed 8-16 bit soundtrack following the film's own eerie and symphonic musicals
-levels with bright to dark colors of varying attentiveness, the sprites and backgrounds carved masterfully
-engaging and well made cut-scenes that would make the average arcade classic blush in admiration
-You can play as a freaky farming pilgrim with a laser pitchfork!
Cons:
-extremely challenging at times (even before unlocking additional difficulties)
-unforgiving obstacles and swarms of threats
-how did the devs get permission to use the giant claw and ro-man???
-rage-inducing auto-scroll levels
-really should be on more consoles
This game is pretty charming, if a bit rough-edged. If you're familiar with the AVGN games, then the game feel will be familiar- this walked so they could run. The cutscene art is fantastic, with very solid spritework as well- all the gags were very readable & charming. All this to say that this game was almost impossible to play on my PC & I lucked out that my Steam Deck could run it.
Below is my original review.
I would love to recommend this game, but it's unfortunately unplayable for me. It refuses to run at its normal framerate, instead it runs like slowly-freezing molasses :/ I really want to play this, as I'm a big fan of the AVGN Adventures games and also a big MSTie, but without a fix for this (and I have tried to find one that actually fixes it), I have to give it a thumbs down :(
I will be more than happy to change this if there is a fix for this.
woof no good.
This is so lame. Even a decade ago, it would've felt like nothing but hack references but playing it in 2024 shows how shallow and thoughtless the entire game is. It's probably one of the worst games I have in my entire library. Yowza, how does this have any positive reviews at all?
Cool short game
I can't recommend it based on gameplay, but I think it is funny that exists. Still plays better than most NES games.
A fine game for connoisseurs.
An absolute joyless experience.
And really, I didn't expected much : just a fun homage to one of the best "so bad it's good" movie. But outside of the dialogues (straight out of the movie) and the graphics (simple but kinda charming), nothing works. The gameplay is atrocious (something I didn't expect from such a basic sidescroller), just like the level design (the same cheap trick over and over).
Manos (and Torgo) deserved better.
If you love cheesey, so bad its good B-movies, and MST3K, then you are going to love this game.
*okay hand signal*
It stinks!
2/10
This game overall is a fun 2D side-scrolling platformer/run n gun. The beginning 5 stages are the brightest part of the experience. Stage 6 is when you start to experience cheap deaths, hindered visibility, both vertical and horizontal auto-scroller levels and these things when combined together make for a more frustrating than necessary experience. I was able to clear it in less than 30 minutes which for an NES style game is fine for length. I overall enjoyed the platforming and shooting mechanics it's just a shame that the game contains some of these cheap gimmicks that quite frankly just aren't fun. The game controls great, has some really good pixel art and the music is pretty good. There is some replay-ability with a new mode and harder difficulties to unlock, game also has a set of upgrades/collectibles to acquire as you play. If you don't mind the cheaper aspects of game play I described and are a fan of NES style games this clearly draws inspiration from then I definitely would say give it a play.
Manos: The Hand of Fate(1966)라는 영화가 있다.

Title: A Rollercoaster of Bizarre: MANOS: The Hands of Fate™ Game Review
Introduction:
MANOS MANOS AND MORE MANOS?!?!
MANOS: The Hands of Fate™ is a unique and unexpected addition to the world of video games, based on the cult classic horror film of the same name. Developed by a team of passionate indie developers, the game attempts to capture the essence of the original movie while delivering an interactive experience that's both intriguing and bewildering. Prepare for a journey that blends nostalgia, horror, and absurdity in ways you've never quite imagined.
Gameplay:
The gameplay in MANOS: The Hands of Fate™ is an eccentric mix of point-and-click adventure, platforming, and surreal exploration. Players take on the role of Mike, who must navigate a series of bizarre locations while rescuing his family from the clutches of the enigmatic Master and his eerie cult. The controls are relatively simple, allowing players to move, interact with objects, and engage in occasional combat sequences. However, the lack of proper tutorials can lead to confusion, especially for newcomers.
One of the game's standout features is its non-linear progression. Players can choose between various paths and decisions, each leading to unique outcomes and endings. This dynamic adds replay value as players are encouraged to explore different choices in subsequent playthroughs. However, the lack of clarity in consequences might frustrate players looking for a more guided experience.
Visuals:
The visual presentation of MANOS: The Hands of Fate™ is a double-edged sword. The developers have intentionally designed the graphics to mimic the low-budget, grainy style of the original movie. While this creates a nostalgic connection for fans of the film, it can also be jarring for those accustomed to modern, polished visuals. The deliberately awkward animations and pixelated art style contribute to the game's surreal atmosphere, though some players might find it off-putting.
World Design:
The game's world design is simultaneously intriguing and disorienting. Locations are meticulously crafted to resemble scenes from the film, from the haunting desert landscapes to the eerie lodge. Exploring these areas can be both captivating and frustrating, as the lack of a clear map or direction can result in aimless wandering. This design choice, while meant to evoke a sense of mystery, might lead to player frustration, especially for those seeking a more streamlined experience.
Sound and Music:
MANOS: The Hands of Fate™ nails the audio aspect by delivering an eerie and unsettling soundtrack that effectively captures the eerie atmosphere of the source material. The voice acting, while intentionally exaggerated to mimic the style of the original movie, can be polarizing. Some players might appreciate the quirky charm, while others could find it grating over time.
Horror and Comedy:
The game blends horror and absurd comedy in a way that's both unique and bewildering. The surreal scenarios and unexpected encounters often result in unintentional hilarity. Whether it's fending off bizarre enemies or engaging in strange interactions, the game consistently keeps players on their toes, never quite knowing what to expect next. This juxtaposition might not resonate with everyone, but it's undoubtedly one of the game's defining characteristics.
Conclusion:
MANOS: The Hands of Fate™ is a game that defies convention and expectations. Its deliberate embrace of the bizarre and its determination to faithfully pay homage to the cult film might alienate some players while delighting others. The non-linear progression, combined with the strange world and unpredictable encounters, creates an experience that is both captivating and confounding. If you're a fan of the original movie and have a penchant for the eccentric, MANOS: The Hands of Fate™ might just be the oddball adventure you've been waiting for. Just be prepared to embrace the weirdness and roll with the surreal punches.
All these movie license games are getting out of hand, but this is a good introduction to the Manos Cinematic universe.
Even if you're a fan of Manos, you've seen the MST3K episode, the RiffTrax version and maybe even the bluray release, don't bother with this NES-like junk. It's boring and unimaginative gameplay won't keep you interested. Check it out when it's discounted to $0. Just don't bother.
Its one of the best movie games ever.
This is a great horror platformer. If I had owned this as a kid, I would have had nightmares about it.
Hear me out for a second...The fact a game was developed based on an unbelievably atrocious and obscure movie from the 60's tells me that there's something worth checking out. MST3K made this movie a cult classic and after viewing it at least 300 times I'd have to say it ranks as one of my favorite movies ever. The background story to how this movie was made is far more interesting than the movie itself. The game is an absolute love letter to this almost forgotten gem of a movie and I can't recommend it enough.
i did not watch the movie but i assume its a horror movie it give me some spooky vibes is very interesting to see a run and gun game with a spooky style
I'm a huge MST3k fan and this game truly captures the spirit of how bad this movie is. Fun to play, Classic NES feel to it. Would recommend to fans of the side scrolling genre and Manos fans.
Manos: The Hand of Fate
Who is Manos, and why he's at the hands of fate.
Silly but fun platformer that throws off great retro vibes. Works perfectly on the Steam Deck.
A fun 2D platformer, if a little too short.
Though I've never seen the movie (at the time of writing), I think it has an interesting story about a cult-leader with minions and maidens who conducts rituals to worship the god of darkness, Manos. I also think that the Master's costume has a cool design, a black cape with two big red hands on the inside. Even if the story isn't the main focus, it held my attention, and it was complimented by its presentation. This game has a grainy filter, just like an old horror movie, and some stages have tunnel vision lighting; the cutscenes in between stages are presented through well drawn pixel-art illustrations; I also like how the in-game graphics go for a more muted color pallet with a few contrasts to highlight important characters and objects, all of which have interesting designs as well; finally, the music and sound effects also help give the game a creepy, mysterious atmosphere to it.
As for the gameplay, Manos: The Hands of Fate is similar to an old-school Castlevania title, but much more beginner friendly. The hand statues throughout the stage give you plenty of health pickups and extra lives to keep going, and the shotgun powerup makes fighting enemies easier; my only problem is that you lose the shotgun as soon as you take damage, which I find annoying.
I should also mention that each of the 8 stages has a "Hand of Fate" hidden in it. All but the one in stage 6 are pretty easy to find as long as you take the time to explore each stage. When you find one, it increases your health bar, and you have to find all 8 to get the good ending, just like grabbing all the Chaos Emeralds in a Sonic game.
It's a pretty short game, one that you can beat in about half an hour, but it's still a good game nonetheless.
Definitely buy this game to support the talented people over at Freak Zone Games, and you'll most likely have a good time!
Better than the movie. No ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ way??
I've never seen the movie that this game was based on, although I've heard is just the worst thing ever, but the game itself was a fun little distraction. And coming from the guy who made the AVGN games as well as Spectacular Sparky, now that's something! Give it a try!
Great movie, even better game. It may not be 100% true to the original, but makes wonderful references with fun platforming and challenging boss rooms. I cannot recommend this gem and masterpiece enough. Plus the added bonus of it being only 2 bucks, what's not to love?
MANOS: The Hands of Fate ~ Director's Cut
Nota: 8/10
Th-the mAster w-wOuld apProve of yOu b-buying tHis gAme.
why is the game so loud dude lmao
Horrible game with terrible level design, perfectly following its source material. Fantastic.
Retroscore - 7/10
I watched the movie, that is trash, but the game is really funny and good parody itself :)
🎩 The price of this is zero because it should be FREE. It's a "man vs controls" type of game, very short (~30 min), but is stretched by sliding unresponsive controls and a few "hardcore" sections, where you're constantly given lives to keep playing, instead of just quitting. The visual is okay, the music isn't bad, the sounds (especially Torgo's) are horribly loud. There are also a number of annoying bugs that'll never be fixed. «AVGN» games from the same dev are much better.
Great but simple 2D platformer! A love letter to the source movie, MST3K, & 8-bit 2D platformers.
Super fun game, that starts off as a basic left-to-right Mario clone, but then becomes a full 2D platform game (like New Zealand Story, Wonder Boy in Monsterland etc). The price is a steal and it's based on the greatest movie ever made, what more do you want?! (just needs a save feature at the end of each level, we're too old to have to replay levels over and over...)
Unlike the film it's based on, the enjoyment from this game isn't ironic. It's just straight up good.
Gutes spiel aber sehr schwer
A hard retro style game for an old obscure movie that is garbage. A very niche thing to make a game about, but hey it works.
This is the first game from this studio and he would later go on to make the AVGN games, which have a similar style of game play and graphics. He even recycles one of the bosses from this game into AVGN.
I enjoyed it but the game is rather difficult. But hey, it's $1.99 so it's a cheap addition to any library.
A terrible game for a terrible movie. Its short and cheap and the lives and health are plentiful at least but some frustrating platforming with way too many traps and enemies that bump you into pits. It was okay enough of a time killer but theres very little replay value, it only caught my eye because the same programmers also did the AVGN games.
Huge "Nightmare on Elm Street" vibes. Short, fun platformer.
If you are looking for this one, you already watched the movie and if not, give both a try.
I was wondering why the game feels like "AVGN adventures", its the same people. Nice!
Overall: A freaking FRUSTRATING game that really does remind me of an arcade game. Cheap and campy, makes you regret opening it. Unfair, but has potential if one is skilled.
Styled in an NES format, this game really makes me think of playing a NES game when I was younger. I just barely completed it, but I can't even make myself reopen it because of how rage inducing it can be. No perfect achievements here.
Recommended for people who love that age of games, the unfair, few hit KO style (you can, however, get more health, but that doesn't help you in the last stage). I didn't like it, however it is not a 'bad' game.
This game is a riot.
Really fun if you're into schlocky old movies and nes-style platform games.
Has some tricky old school platforming, including some cheap deaths, but it's nothing too difficult to handle.
Never seen Manos, probably dosn't matter
Fun game, absolute steal for 2 quid
I am Kyle...I take care of the place while the Master is away.
This is a surprisingly decent game considering its humble beginnings. Collision and platforming is pretty wonky, but overall It's a good time.
This is the greatest game ever made by a human being.
Manos: The Hands of Fate is an iOS/tablet ported game making fun of the awful film of the same name as lampooned by Mystery Science Theatre 3000. There's still legal uncertainty as to whether the film and the film title are properly trademarked or copyrighted, so we'll have to see if there's any legal action against the developers here.
Regardless, it was a bad idea and it was coupled with an even worse implementation. The only thing worse than a film with such low production value as Manos is lazy/incompetent developers using retro pixel art. If the developers don't get sued by Joe Warren for trademark infringement or infringement of the copyrighted script, then they should probably be sued for making a really bad video game with crappy pixel graphics. And also be sued for porting a mobile game to PC. That's like asking people in a fine restaurant to eat dog food.
I keeep the house while thee maaster is awaaay
It'll be daark soon, there is no waay out
Summary: A nice tribute to bad movies and bad games.
Manos: The Hands of Fate was at one time an obscure, low-budget movie made on a bet by a fertilizer salesman. After being rediscovered by a TV station, it would later appear on Mystery Science Theater 3000, in one of the most popular episodes. Now, this "awful" movie is a cult classic. Thanks to Freakzone, it is also a retro platformer.
The story follows a family on a trip, who get lost and stop for the night at a rather sinister lodge. On arriving, the caretaker just nervously keeps saying "master would not approve", but relents, and lets them spend the night. The place turns out to be home to a polygamist cult who are in some kind of hibernation. The story doesn't actually make much sense, and visually the movie is just bad. Yet it's very watchable, and Torgo is a memorable character.
Which brings me to MANOS: The Hands of Fate The Video Game Director's Cut, which was shortened to MANOS because of confusion with a game with a similar name.
This is a retro platformer done in an 8-bit style. It looks, plays, and feels like an NES game. There are a lot of those, but this one actually plays pretty well. So long as you are using a gamepad, the controls feel right. I feel it's one of the better NES-style games on Steam.
Thematically, the game is very liberal with the plot, which was kind of typical for movie tie-in games on NES. Not only does it feature Manos, but also movies like Robot Monster and Plan 9 From Outer Space are referenced, along with old video games. There is one level which parodies a notorious Castlevania area, which in an older version used the quote "What a terrible night to have a curse!" (the Director's Cut changes this to "What a terrible night to have a missing wife and daughter!"). The game is, pretty much in its entirety, an affectionate parody, but not at the expense of the gameplay.
The game, is hard. The difficulty, mostly, is not in poor design, and everything can be overcome with practice and timing. I would, though, contrast this game to the company's other game, the similar Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures. That game's challenges are sadistic, but also kind of cheap. In comparison, this game feels more clever. However, between the two are many similarities (including a boss fight that is in both games).
The Director's Cut version differs from the original release (which is no longer available). Cutscenes have been added, native controller support, a film grain effect, a new level, some levels were overhauled, and the ability to play as Torgo was added.
This is not going to be a top-10 greatest game. It's also not in the same league as the NES classics such as Mega Man 2 or Mario 3. What it is, is a challenging platformer that pays tribute to weirdness. Nothing more, nothing less. If that doesn't sound appealing to you, then pass on this game. If you played old games and watched MST3K during bouts on insomnia, definitely check on this.
Pretty bad. Unavoidable damage, even at the start of a checkpoint. Just bad game design overall.
if you want something easier, play Cuphead, there is no way out of here, it will be dark soon, there is no way out of here
Very faithful to the movie and the old NES sidescrollers.
fajna gra do poskakania, postrzelania i pozbiernia fantow, uwaga mamy bossa w kazdej rundzie!
Great game! It's pretty much your generic 8 bit action game of yesteryear. Plays like a well made NES game. Isn't incredibly long or difficult & it's Manos! If you passed this up the master would not approve. And Torgo would be upset. Well worth the few bucks.
Bad
A successful trip back to the old ways/h1]
YEA!

Nice 8bit style, the sprites look nice

Simple, easy to pick up and get at it

Game is at the right length that it does not overstay it's welcome

MEH!

Story is would I say, very all over place....

Controls and response is ok, but there are times I feel it does not respond well to inputs. Long jump platforming is awkward
with how you need to kind of jump while hanging pretty much all the way off platforms to make the jump.

Easy to beat, especially with lots of extra lives, health and you get to continue from current stage at game over

BLEH!

That NES era knockback....

Text hangs around way too long and is unskippable

Difficulty curve for the stages seems solid, but the bosses are mostly all too easy with maybe the level 3 being an exception
How it Runs:
No issues holds solid at 60 fps, I would be surprised if this couldn't run on a toaster level PC
The Gist:
A nice solid throwback to the 8 bit days, it is a solid game if you like that era of gaming. My only real hatred is that inclusion of that era's knockback effects when you get hit, which can be frustrating at some checkpoints with the way enemies spawn. In the end I thoroughly enjoyed the game enough to attempt some speedrun attempts, so yea I would say its worth it for $3.
It was brought to my attention that this is based off a terrible 60s movie and that is why the story is terrible, in the end this makes the game even better!
Ok, have you ever seen the movie this is actually based off of?
No? Neither have I till after I played this game.
That being said.. this game is literally a true NES style adaptation of what a game would be if this rather hokey and terrible movie had a game that wasn't made by Laughing Joking Numbnuts (LJN). It's almost that kind of quality if Konami decided to ♥♥♥♥ one out for a quick license grab... and that is why I love it.
Honestly this game is heavily underrated but if you want a nice short platform romp whether you even care to stomach through the movie or not then for $3 you really can't go wrong. Beat the game in a couple of hours, might revisit it sometime just because it was just simply fun to play (might try my luck on the harder modes).
All in all, it delivers for a game you never asked for and you might find yourself loving it for that.
Nice and all, but what are the controls? This game surely is like the old games: Throwing you in the boat without a paddle!
(nvm that was just a fluke the first time I played it: no cutscene, no menu, just press start and bam, into the game. Weird.)
But other than that, fantastic.
I wish you could change the controls to use wasd, but alas. So here they are:
< - left
> - right
space/x - jump
enter - start
z - fire
^ - activate(door)
Final Concensus: If Mario and Indiana Jones had a child that made bad movies. (and good games)
this game is better than the movie its based on and this game is hard but would the master approve no
Best movie to videogame adaptation ever, but speaking seriously the game is a very simple but fun retro platformer that pays homage to probably the worst movie ever made (plus a couple of other "worst ever" films).
The only "big" flaws I see is that the boss battle of lv7 and the sub-boss battle of lv8 are dependant on the player getting all or most of the health upgrades in the previous levels.
Oh, also probably is better to get the game on discount or on a bundle as it's most likely not worth it full price for people that don't even know the movies this game is parodying.
Good in a bad sort of way.
No music in game.

It stinks!
I recommend the "MANOS" game to old-school MST3K fans (like myself) who are also fans of old-school action platformer games (like myself). If you check both boxes, you'll love this. However, I feel that if you are just an MST3K fan or just a platformer fan, you will be disappointed. The former may be disappointed because platformers can be very frustrating and repetitive die-fests. The latter may be disappointed because this is a pretty brief platformer. Still, there are references both to old MST3K movies and old platformers as well, so perhaps there are enough jokes to go around.
On the other *hand*, if you are just a fan of "MANOS", then please seek help.
A few random notes:
- Movie Hobgoblins were the most lethargic puppets in existence. I guess they got a speed buff to avoid copyright issues. /s
- Getting to play as Torgo was surprisingly fun. He was clearly the superior leading man. Nice "jiggle"-physics too.
- The drunk smooching couple deserved their own driving level, constantly threatening to run Mike or Torgo off the road. Or at least a twangy cutscene, "Why don't you guys leave us alone?"
It's cheap and fun for two hours.
Fun little game. Would recommend playing. My only complaints with the game is some spawn points in some levels could be better and not immediately put you at risk of getting hit or being knocked off a platform, and could use a clear indicator that you lose the shotgun when hit.
Lots of MST3K jokes and solid platforming. Very funny. Claw boss is pretty tough.
A surprisingly fun little retro platformer, with a delightful theme.
It's clearly a labor of love both for platformers AND for its subject. It could've rested on its laurels for being a joke premise -- a MST episode turned into a game! -- but instead, it's actually an entertaining game.

TLDR: Short duration, B movie references galore. "rage" (AVGN) oriented encounter design, insta death pits. Loads of health points and checkpoints. No staying power.
I played this game in 10 minutes bursts, only to find that I had not, in fact, played it for an hour, like it felt I did. I trudged unto the second last level in 45 minutes and was fairly saturated. The gimmick is always the same, scroll the screen moving forward, learn the BS pattern of silly B movie monsters and learn the precise timing and positioning to proceed. Thankfully the game uses a lot of checkpoints and gives back a lot of health through power ups which helps cushion things along. The controls are sufficiently tight and the level design did feel playtested enough that there would be no unwinnable situations.
It is simply not my type of gameplay at all. Hooking you because you do not want to give up and make a tiny bit of progress everytime. Testing your patience and perseverance, but when I take a step back I realize I have not had any enjoyment. Serves as a good summary of the kind of experiences you'd see on the AVGN show or maybe even the AVGN adventure platformer game.
Thing is the reason I enjoyed AVGN was to catharzize and liberate me from all those memories of frustration I had with my NES as a kid. Feeling I had to play through games because my parents spent good money on them, but getting silly dealth oriented level design and frustrating broken mechanics for my trouble.
Seems like AVGN just fetishizes the type of gameplay or has a masochistic side, or maybe it just turned into his brand to play these things and yell at them, to the point where the profit motive leads him to finding more, and even creating more of them himself.
As far as I am concerned this type of gameplay is a relic of the past, and should stay in the past. Especially since the plot here is very loose, is just a collection of obscure references and assuming you "git gud" the game will end on you before you realize it anyways.
Deleting local content & moving permanently to hidden library of titles for declutter.
Its the NES-style movie tie in game you never thought you wanted!
A terrible game based on a terrible movie. It's awesome. It sucks.
MANOS is based off of MANOS: Hands of Fate, the movie that has been so incredibly rifftracked by MST3k.
The game is a great little MetroidVania game that doesn't strive for much other than to be fun. In that it succeeds!
In a semi-ironic twist, it's one of the worst movies ever made that gets a quality game adaptation. "MANOS" follows "Manos: The Hands of Fate" rather faithfully, and creativity- making collectibles and boss fights from portions of the movie that one might not expect, but that do flow logically.
Similar tot he movie, however, this game can be a bit tough to get through. While the movie is tough to get through because of its poor quality, "MANOS" is simply a difficult game.

I have to admit, I've never seen MANOS: The Hands of Fate. But, this game doesn't exactly do a good job of portraying the story. And, even still... it's not exactly the easiest game to play. This is AVGN Adventures before AVGN Adventures... escentially.
