I assumed this would be a deduction game where you had to pay attention to all the information to figure out the optimal solution. Nope, turns out you have to guess to get the "four star" ratings. Which means replaying the same day over and over again. Which is not fun or challenging (except to your patience).

Pros
- Beautfiul artstyle and animations
- Fantastic voice acting
- Pretty cool concept and meld of gameplay; mostly point and click but has kind of papers please adjacent vibes.
- Interesting story.
- Lots of humor.

Cons
- Maybe just me but I found the main actions (trust, tease, doubt) to be very vague. This might be by design but I never really knew what it a particular action was really going to mean. Like what specific part of the conversation was I trusting or doubting etc. The rewind mechanic kind of makes it so you can just go back and keep retrying (with limits) until you get it perfect but overall it just felt a bit unsatisfying to me.
- A minor gribe was during the point and click sections you can't click directly on hotspots, you have to click to make your character walk to within range and then a icon appears that you can click on. Sometimes finding the sweet spot was annoying.

Overall its a definite recommend.

I'm disappointed.

But first, the most important part, options.
There are music and sound sliders.
Fullscreen mode can be turned off, so I can play in a window, and there are various resolutions to choose from. That makes it playable to me!

It also remembers the position of the window.

I had this on my wishlist since some Steam thing had various games broadcast, forgot details. It looked like a fun game.

Now it was on sale for 3.40 euro, still more than I normally buy games for, but I grabbed it anyway.

There are some funny bits, but it turns out very linear, with little real choices, so the player is just railroaded along the story.

There's no convenient way to skip stuff you've seen before. You can't even skip the annoying singing of some woman at all! All that's left to preserve my sanity was to mute the entire game window via windoze for the duration of that scene.

I was wondering whether to get out an autoclicker to help with the endless clicking through known dialogues and save my poor mouse. (I actually did at some point.)

You can't save in the middle of a day. Devs apparently explain that with some gadget that you can use to rewind. I don't understand why I have to keep playing until the day is done, even when in a sudden hurry because of real life, or repeat everything I've done already the next time I play if I close the game in the middle of a day, wasting my REAL Life time.

And then there's the fiddly bit to walk to just the right spot you have to stand to click on something to look at or someone to talk to.

On top of that you can get a sudden game over, because you did the wrong choice, or it simply decides that [spoiler] an arsonist can still light up everything without their bunsen burner. [/spoiler] You can then repeat the day anyway (without using the gadget) until you pick the desired actions.

So much for affecting the city's fate. [spoiler] Like can't keep the undesirable courters out of the city to prevent the wedding. [/spoiler]

Oh, and the days and their events are always in the same order. I'd have liked some randomness and possibilities to "let's do this or that and see what happens".

And then there's a scene with a freaking timer!

So, positive, it's playable, and somewhat funny. Voice acting is good. Graphics are nice. (I turn music off first thing in most games.)

Negative: everything else.

It's good, although I was expecting it to be way more of a game than a visual novel with gameplay segments. Guess I was just hoping it was modular enough to be like Papers Please, where I could always come back and play a little.
It's not that, it's very much a game with a set number of challenges that are mostly just there for variety's sake. It's a little slow because of that, and i think the addition of an extra route mostly defined by your failures is kinda pointless, but overall it's a very good, beautiful little game. Definitely recommend.

A very cute and simple game. The story was cute and had more depth than i was expecting when first going in. The voice acting was well done and charming. J'ai adoré ! Le principe du jeu étant assez simple (interroger les gens pour décider s'ils rentrent ou pas dans la ville), j'avais peur du côté répétitif mais j'ai été détrompée avec plaisir.
L'histoire se tisse au fil des choix que vous effectuez, qui ont un réel impact sur le déroulement des événements. Quand la partie se finit, on a juste envie de relancer pour observer l'influence de choix différents.

Pretty much in the "visual novel" genre that I generally don't like - if that's your favorite thing, this review is not for you.

Sound and graphics are fine. There's a lot of time spent waiting for transition animations to complete, or walking across rooms (I eventually realized double-clicking makes that slightly faster but it's still too slow), which is my pet peeve.

Story-wise it's... fine again. Not good, just fine.

Most of the interactions are super obvious, and those that aren't don't come across as tricky, it seems more like those ones are just nonsense and you have to guess.

With the ability to rewind time a bit that would be fine, except, again, the slowness of the transitions - if you could try a different path in 5 seconds it would be no problem but having it take a minute to trawl through the sequences a second time (even with skipping the dialogue) makes it a chore to play.

According to the achievements I got the best ending first time. Yay I guess.

Lil Guardsman is a refreshingly unique experience. It's essentially a light detective game wrapped in a charming fantasy setting. You take on the role of a young guard named "Lil", tasked with questioning travelers and using various tools to determine whether they should be admitted into the kingdom. It’s a clever blend of deduction, humor, and moral decision-making.

The true highlight of the game is its cast of characters. The people (and creatures) you encounter are unique and memorable. The writing balances humor and seriousness surprisingly well, delivering laugh-out-loud moments alongside more thoughtful beats. It’s all presented with a ton of charm and personality.

Your choices genuinely matter in Lil Guardsman. The game even alerts you when a decision will have a “butterfly effect.” At times, I wished the consequences were a bit clearer, but others may appreciate that ambiguity since it reinforces the game’s investigative nature.

Overall, it took me about six hours to complete, and it hooked me in over a couple of evenings. I was eager to see how each day in the guard shed would play out, and how my decisions would shape the outcome. I played on my LED Steam Deck and experienced no performance issues or crashes. The game frequently goes on sale for under $10, and at that price, it’s absolutely worth picking up.

I don't like this game. I'm the problem; the game is great. The voice acting is superb. When the singing arsonist appeared like a singing Disney princess, I died. It is not a point-and-click game that I expected, but a choice matter game in the style of Papers, Please. You're a gate guard, and you have 3 actions before you allow or deny entry. But there is like one solution to every problem, and you can close yourself off from the best because you lack the funds to do so. And this frustrates me to the hell.

Lil' Guardsman immediately gets bonus points from me for featuring a female lead, and it delivers a fun, easy‑to‑navigate point‑and‑click experience built around personality and charm.

Unless you know exactly what items to bring and what to say/do you wont get a good score which is just infuriating, they made this game purely to force you to use a guide or replay it which is not good design, the story is bland as hell and the pointless loading screens takes up way to much time.

Lil´ Guardsman es un juego al más puro estilo de las aventuras clásicas, me recuerda un poco a Monkey Island en el trazado de los personajes y quizás la música que en algunas piezas parece un tanto "inspirada en". 女主角Lil真是天生地长的小女孩，有勇有谋，制作组很细致地为她做了对话后的表情差分，太灵动可爱了。Lil一路上结识的朋友们会反复出现，各自有小小的故事线，也很有陪伴和沉浸感。人物的年龄、容貌、性格、种族都很多样，且刻板印象相对较少。

总体上很自由，使用道具、打电话时，经常有惊喜时刻，wow moment：[spoiler]比如说人鱼族群失声的问题，给小丑打个电话可以奇妙地解决；急匆匆赶来的球员，抽她一鞭子会让她受伤无法参赛，Lil就可以赌球稳赢了；用X光机照捉鬼黑白双煞，可以照出老国王的鬼魂。[/spoiler]如果有“不这么做就完蛋了”的选择题，一般也有适当的引导，还有官方开挂的容错率。只是平时有点缺乏使用道具引导（也可能是故意为之让大家脑洞大开），像我这样想象力贫乏的人十分依赖吐真喷雾。可以想象背后的文本量巨大。
[b]剧情[/b]
这一部分则有些美中不足，但我深知叙事差分的工作量太过巨大，没必要太过苛刻。虽然主线“你的选择会影响Sprawl的未来”，但其实玩家得到的反馈比较模糊，也不知道这样的结果究竟是怎样导致的，碎片化的叙事难免显得没有逻辑，纯图一乐；在每天的“小后日谈”中，有些结果也难免无厘头到让人怀疑Lil的努力究竟是否有用。
不过[spoiler]战争[/spoiler]的剧情还是很打动人的，我很喜欢Lil和父亲彼此的牵挂，也喜欢叙事气氛和风格的转变。

其实没什么交互，单独拎出来说是因为每次对话点起来很不舒适，点击人物后Lil会自动走到正确的位置+放大画面，这个交互很容易让我烦躁……有时间限制的时候更加烦躁……

总而言之，这是一款小而美的佳作，让人能够感受到制作组的奇思、幽默、诚意与用心。美术和配音的可爱精巧不必赘述，正在促销大家快来玩吧:D

C'mon people, buy this game! We gotta support devs like this. It's incredibly funny, heartwarming, surprising and best of all it's downright fun. My wife and I have played through it a few times on Xbox and lets just say we had very different tactics during our individual playthroughs. Because of this, I got to see results I NEVER would have seen using my logical/pragmatic approach. It was hilarious!

Lil' Guardsman est un bon petit jeu dans la ligné d'un papers please avec un accent prononcé sur l'humour dans un monde médiéval fantasie. Le jeu à un DA cartoonesque et sympa. La durée de vie est assez courte mais le jeu en vaut le coût.

Zuckersüßes Spiel mit vielen witzigen Charakteren und Dialogen.
Habe es mit meiner Tochter gespielt und wir hatten eine Menge Spaß.
Die Bewertung am Wachhaus sind nicht immer nachvollziehbar aber da das Spiel die Story in den Vordergrund stellt ist das nicht weiter tragisch.
Spielerisch nicht unendlich fordernd aber wunderbar witzig, ruhig und sehr schön illustriert.

This game is a wonderful mix of Papers Please, Adventure Time and old point and click adventure games. The amount of unique dialogue for each of the dozens of unique encounters at the gates, for each of the tools, conversations and interactions that you have available is stunning. The writing can be hit or miss with a bit too many jokey references, but the story is engaging and the characters endearing. Truly surprising!

I absolutely hate the type of game where, if you aren't following a guide, or haven't played it before, or don't get extremely lucky, then you can't get the optimal outcome. It really takes away from the detective experience (and guardsman experience) if, say, you encounter an obvious vampire whose solution is a bag of rice you didn't confiscate (for no good reason) earlier. Or, if you run out of charges on a tool you need because you didn't know you would have to upgrade that specific tool, to that degree, and fill it with crystals before even playing a level!

¿Qué niña de 12 años no quiere reemplazar a su padre en el trabajo mientras él se va a gastar todo el dinero familiar en las apuestas?

El juego es una de estas aventuras gráficas modernas en la que tus decisiones REALMENTE importan y desencadenan cambios en el futuro de la historia y diferentes finales.

La localización y el humor del juego es tan bueno que me pasé riendo la mayor parte de la partida. Me ha gustado encontrar varias referencias a otras obras dentro del juego, algunas un poco más claras que otras.

Sin entrar en spoilers, hay niveles donde tienes que estar un poco más atento o tienes que tener suerte para conseguir las 4 estrellas. Pero en general es fácil y MUY entretenido. Literalmente lo he rejugado justo después de terminarlo sólo para poder tomar otras decisiones y ver qué ocurría con los personajes.

I really liked the animation and the voice acting is generally pretty good. It feels a lot like a Nickelodeon cartoon. There does seem to be a bit of DEI and maybe a bit of forced wokeness, but it is a cartoon so it isn't so offensive.

The writing isn't terrible but it just didn't really work for me. I didn't find it funny or interesting at all. And also everything feels a bit slow and kind of drags on. The game also encourages you to replay days/encounters... but to me that makes it drag on even more.

I wish there was a neutral button. The art, writing and characters are great, and I really love the premise of this. Was super excited to pick it up in the sale.
However, it sucks that it keeps getting compared to Papers Please, because it's nothing alike. I went in looking forward to a more lighthearted Papers Please, and soon found the gameplay is totally different. A lot of it seems to revolve around guesswork and trying different options. There's an in game mechanic that lets you start the interaction over, but it just means you're basically just throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, without much hint as to what you should be doing. For instance one of the first interactions the game actively tells you to ring someone if x appears. You feel like a smarty head for remembering this request, and ring the right person, and are told to let them in. However, doing so doesn't net you full marks, to get full marks I found out on a guide youu need to use a truth potion, but there is no reason why I would ever think to do so beyond trying it to see. On top of that, all use items have limited uses, so if you don't charge the right item, you just can't use it, but it might be the rng item you need.
For me personally guess work just isn't a fun mechanic, especially not when I was expecting the gameplay to be more of a checking and comparing papers. If said gameplay mechanic sounds like it appeals, I can recommend the game, as every other aspect of it is great.

El juego es simple y amigable.
Si lo tomas como un juego tipo telltale games te va a decepcionar (Como el 90% de los juegos de telltale games, pues peca en los mismos problemas), pero si lo tratas como uno de puzles, disfrutas de la historia que va desarrollando te puedes sacar un par de risas sinceras (No desternillantes, pero si un ''jeje'' después de algún dialogo que te pille conectado al remate).
OJO: No lo recomendaría si únicamente te interesa el carácter paper plis, pues en ese sentido la rejugabilidad es nula y cada día recibes casi a los mismo y si te vas muy lejos de lo que busca plantear el juego eres castigado.

Es un juego adorable, tus decisiones en la puerta determinan el futuro de la historia de Sprawl, lo que hace que sea rejugable. Puedes retroceder en tus decisiones de forma sencilla así que eso te permite poder jugar de una forma muy relajada. El humor es una constante y acompaña para que sea una experiencia bastante entretenida,

Tu papel en el juego no se limita solo a la función de guardia, en cada nivel hay interludios donde tendrás que tomar decisiones, podrás hablar con distintos personajes o incluso comprar mejoras y cristales para usar durante tu turno de guardia.

Recomiendo la compra aunque hay que ser conscientes de que no es un juego largo, así que quizá es mejor dejarlo para cuando esté de ofertas.

Ah! por cierto, si loque buscas es acción, no creo que este sea un juego para ti.

This game lives and dies on its writing and it just wasn't hitting for me. It is a weird blend of cutesy and crass. It seems like it is constantly trying to wink at you, elbow you in the ribs, and say "funny, isn't it?" Also, there are just some really odd gameplay choices. Like every action you take taking 3x as long as it should. Why is walking so slow? Why is switching characters so slow? Additionally, I thought the voice acting was poor in a number of cases that pulled me out of it.

On the positive side, I did finish it, I enjoyed the music, and the game does sort of evolve in a way that doesn't necessarily tire you out by the end.

But overall, not for me.

Missed the refund window unfortunately, so I had to finish the game.

Art style is cute. Voice acting is decent. Gameplay is okay I guess. The story doesn't make sense but whatever.

But the real issue is that the game tries very hard to be funny, but is hardly funny at all, partly because of all the breaking-the-fourth-wall jokes that are being doled out regularly. Nothing is more immersion-breaking than that.

This game is so damn funny, I can't recommend it enough.
A good time all around, even if I feel some of the choices where it says that it will "have an impact" do not actually impact anything. However, that there are choices to begin with is awesome and fans of "Papers Please" and (surprisingly enough) "Monkey Island" will definitely enjoy this one!
