I cried.. a little.. no.. not actually.. but i cried inside.. yes.. no..
Great art, music, and gameplay. The metaphors and parallels were done well- they made me *more* invested in the game.
I was recommended this from an extra credits video years back and it stayed at the back of my mind until I picked it up recently. I went in with few expectations, but was genuinely surprised. The game is a little clunky at times but I can tell that the developer put a lot of love into this. I was genuinely invested in the characters and the story. The combat system was surprisingly fun. My only real complaint is some things in the story aren't expanded upon and the story ended a little too abruptly, but I genuinely enjoyed this game. Play it if you can.
It's a hidden jam that I Didn't touch for a long time. The story, game mechanics, graphics, soundtracks, everything is perfect. One of the best indie games I have ever played!
I enjoyed the premise of this game and thought to try it out. It's definitely worth it! The gameplay is easy but the point of this game is to experience the journey and story told. The idea that a video game that advances alongside the protagonists real world decision and that the protagonist is a down on his luck 30 something dude suffering from a kind of 'failure to launch' life problems is relatable and engrossing. It won't take you long to finish and it does hold some replay value. The combat mechanics of the in game 'legend of the spear' game that gary plays is actually fun and engrossing. Soundtrack is nice too.
the game play, artwork, and story are great.
Very short but very satisfying. The soundtrack is MWAH.
I love all of this game's ideas and what it does with them. It's fun, interesting, touching, and smart.
While it could have used more polish and development time, I think the creator spent the resources they had really well. The story explored its core themes enough to really hit the mark emotionally, and there's just enough combat to show off the promise of the clever combat system. I'd love to live in a world where games like this were more successful.
A very unique game with a very personal feel. It seems too simple at first, but grows in meaning as you play. The dialogue connects very well, Gary's options for reply are often very poignant but also subtle at the same time. I found it very moving. The combat system became something different than I first expected, more of a puzzle of space and timing than a conventional RPG battle.
I had a great experience with my first playthrough, and intend to begin again soon to see the consequences of making different choices.
Short but nice.
7.5/10
I very much appreciate what it seems that the developer is trying to do here, demonstrating the ways in which we can grow personally through time spent gaming. We might gain self-confidence or an increased sense of agency in the world. Jane McGonigal, in her book "Reality is Broken," depicts the ways that gamification can be used to foster motivation in many non-gaming settings, such as implementing the game "Superbetter" to track recovery from an injury or disease.
In Legendary Gary, you'll spend your time switching back and forth between Gary's normal, mundane life, and the RPG that he is playing, "Legend of the Spear." As Gary progresses through the game, the parallels between the characters in-game and the individuals in his life become more and more clear. Each in-game character has a real life counterpart, and these are listed explicitly in the game's credits. The barrier between Gary's actual life and his in-game life begins to blur, as in-game puzzle solutions are found in Gary's day-to-day life. The first introduced instance of this has to be the garden outside Gary's home. His mother would like him to plant flowers in it for her. Not only does this lend Gary a sense of accomplishment and please his mother, but proper care of the flowers provides extra abilities for Gary's party members in the RPG.
These abilities, once gained, added a lot of depth and engagement to the combat system. Although the game isn't particularly long, I found uses for many of the abilities given in the fights provided. The combat in "Legend of the Spear" is turn-based, with both your party and that of the enemy acting simultaneously. Luckily, you have the option to "preview" the turn and discover what the opponents are planning. I often found myself leaping, winding up for strong punches, and grappling enemies, while also targeting opponents with abilities that made them unable to block or move.
Another element which must be praised is the hand-drawn artwork. It is consistently charming, and actually struck me as very "real." So many of the side-characters, especially in Jumbomart, have a "fluffiness" about them. As I live in the Southern US, where almost everyone is slightly overweight, I felt like I had just walked into my local Wal-Mart. I also thought the dialogue was well-written, aiding in the evocation of appropriate emotions at certain moments. However, there were a few moments when it became a bit heavy-handed, as though the writer was worried that players wouldn't "get" what it was that they were going for here.
My only issues with the game were: 1) The battle with Sintravos was pretty brutal, and didn't allow much in the way of alternate strategies. I found that I needed to take advantage of the barriers on the edges of the combat grid to claim victory. 2) I thought the soundtrack was absolutely terrible: cheesy, uninspired, dull beats with soft, garbled, low-effort vocals. At the same time, there's no accounting for taste.
I quite liked Legendary Gary overall, despite the music and brief difficulty spike. It's an inspired piece of art, and I'm excited to see what the developer does next.
This game is very short for the price point, it seems like most of the reviews at this point are from people who received free copies. A complete playthrough took me 4.1hrs.
Other than that the gameplay was ok, but largely unremarkable. I enjoyed the art in the legend of the spear portions and the soundtrack was pleasant.
Достоинства игрушки подробно расписаны в русско- и англоязычных отзывах, чтобы не повторяться просто присоединяюсь к рекомендациям (раз ограниченная система оценок Steam не позволяет рекомендовать игру без отзыва).
Great game, fitting length for the price (about $8), the combat was fun and clever, the soundtrack was cool and the art was nice and creative, especially in the fantasy settings.
My one complaint is that the game autosaved, so it was a hassle to see all the choices I could take in the interactive segments, but it's not that big of a deal once you learn to roll with it.
If you have an afternoon to spend, give this a shot.
First of all, the game is really short — all locations are shown in the trailer, though you'll visit some of them multiple times — and the ending may seem underwheliming because it doesn't solve the main mystery of the game. But thematically Legendary Gary is quite focused, the idea of "game within a game" which also crosses with reality as in Neverending Story is developed very well, and you may also have that "hey, this game is also like my life" feeling from time to time.
The fights with simultaneous turns are quite interesting. There's not many of them, and most are easy (a couple are harder, more puzzle-like). It's also interesting how the characters' and enemies' (enemies often are characters too) skills and behaviour reflect their personas.
Overall, nice little game.

Interesting Art style, innovative concept and great music.
But the turn based combat was a bit too slow to my personal liking and never really clicked with me. I would have liked the game better without this gameplay element in it.
Nevertheless, the idea of playing a real person who's also an adult with a love for videogames is unique and enough of a push for me to want to see how everything plays out.
Not spectacular, but clearly a labor of love by a single dev. A bit short, a bit bland, but a cool set of characters, funky soundtrack and nice idea. Kudos to an original experience and a unique vignette.
Legendary Gary:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the story of a guy who many people can probably relate to. At the age of 30, he still lives at home with his old mother. He was content to lose his job at the supermarket without telling the true story to anyone, and has no intention of doing anything but play videogames all day long for fun instead. That’s until his mother was told by a pastor that a) the world would end very soon, and b) that by giving all her savings away to the pastor, the lord would be kind to her and her family on doomsday. And none of the bills have been paid, including the electricity! How is he going to play his favourite videogame? All will be revealed by the man himself . . . Legendary Gary!
Legendary Gary is an RPG with fun turn-based combat mechanisms. And yes, you’ll be playing the life of Gary!
This is a very interesting game, to say the least. Gary is a normal guy, to a degree. Due to the fact that his mother has given away all her savings to a religious person (oh, God!), he feels the urge to go back to work and take on the responsibilities of paying the bills, becoming a better person, and mostly to keep playing his games at night. There will be plenty of interactions with other characters, who are very well-structured (my favourite is Dave, who is a bit of an idiot, but fun!) Gary will have to deal with his nephew, his girlfriend, a terrible boss and other colleagues at the supermarket. No wonder he needs to immerse himself in his video games at night!
Each night after work he’ll be playing “Legend of the Spear” where he takes control of a guy named Winkali. In this fantasy world, Winkali is supposed to marry the King’s daughter, but all hell breaks loose when Oniga, an old acquaintance of the king, makes his entry at a reception in the great tree (a massive tree palace of some sort). At this point the King escapes and leaves everyone behind, including the princess. This is where Winkali experiences his first taste of combat, and as you progress throughout your evening gaming sessions, he will be joined by other characters to help him defeat strange monsters in hand-to-hand combat. The combat phase is laid out as a hexagon grid and all the characters you control will have two gauges under their avatars; one with 5 health points and the other with 5 strategy points. Each action will cost the character a minimum of 1 to 2 strategy points per turn. To regain all strategy points, each character needs to rest for one. What I personally like in these combat phases is that it’s easy to play and that you can preview what the opponent will do in the turn. After winning, your party will be given a flower seed which will grow in Gary’s garden, located in front of his house. So make sure that Gary waters these plants every morning before going to work so that Winkali and his party have additional abilities in the battles.
In terms of puzzles, they are cleverly done. It is important to be attentive to what is happening during the day in order to solve the puzzles while playing the adventure at night. It’s a bit of a parallel world between the two. Cleverly done and fun. Another aspect of this game that is fun is the dialogues; they’ll surprise you!
The artwork is simple and quite unique, with all characters having different skin colour. Each of the worlds has great detail and you can tell they have been made with dedication and love. The soundtrack is an absolute beauty! Some of the songs are in English and others in French, with quite interesting melodies and lyrics. In terms of controls, you can only use the mouse to point and click where Gary and Winkali need to go.
Positives:
~~~~~~~
+ Nice hand-drawn artwork
+ Great Soundtrack
+ Interesting Story
+ Fun and easy turn-based combat phase
Negatives:
~~~~~~~~
- No Achievements or trading cards
- Only mouse control
Have you heard of the Story of the life of The Legendary Gary? It’s weird, witty and well done!
A fantastic game, I've never played one quite like it! Essentially it's a graphic adventure game in the way it feels and looks. And has a great tactical battle system. These might sound jarring together, but it works well.
The world of the game is very original and a big draw here. Animations are thin-lined and fluid, feeling at times like an old rotoscoped Bakshi film or similar. There are some really cool creatures in here. And some surprisingly good writing!
I was a little worried the meta comparisons to real life would be heavy-handed, as I've seen stories like this often botch it. Mostly the comparisons are just to the everyday mundane life of Gary and don't pretend to be this grandiose dramatic thing, which is the correct juxtaposition in my opinion. There are a couple times it goes a tad sentimental (daddy issues) and a tad juvenile (Gary's friends are supposed to be 30 but act 17). But the middle sequence is a near genius level switch between your terrible job at a supermarket compared to similar events trying to find traitors in a kingdom of lizard/turtle people. I was really into the rhythm of the two worlds here, wanting to see how they tied together. In other parts of the game I much preferred the fantasy world and didn't like being dragged away from it. Which actually makes sense, with the player's emotions matching Gary's, so no real minus there.
Combat is fun. It's a remarkably complete and interesting system for how little you do it. We need more of this! I want to request a spinoff: Gary Tactics! I'm startled by how many nicely animated enemy types there are, most just stick around for a single fight! That's so much work! One guy made this? Jeez...I ended up with lots of skills I never used. It feels like with a little tweaking all the combat content here could have stretched over a game five times as long.
So...great game! Buy it.
Ahora que todavía tenemos frescas Lady Bird y Call me by your name (esa cinta donde sus protagonistas debaten amigablemente sobre Heidegger) parece buen momento para hablar de eso del cine generacional. Aquí suele darse la confusión de que muchos relacionan este tipo de cine con el que marcó a una generación cuando en realidad es el que nos habla de una generación, así que descartemos Top Gun, Dirty Dancing o Gremlins y centrémonos en El Graduado, El Club de los Cinco, Trainspotting, Beautiful Girls, Clerks o Garden State. No es difícil encontrar similitudes entre todas ellas, tanto a nivel formal como a nivel narrativo, pero sobre todo en lo referido a lugares comunes. La forma se antoja tan importante como el fondo y llevamos caminando por esa senda en forma de conversaciones aparentemente intrascendentes sentados en un columpio desde hace más de treinta años. El auge del cine independiente no ha hecho más que aumentar esta saturación de “esto ya lo he visto” (te miro a ti Lady Bird) y por supuesto el hijo bastardo cultural que es el videojuego no podía quedarse sin su trozo de pastel. Ahí tenemos Night in the Woods como estandarte principal, pero a pesar de ser de largo la mejor, la obra de Infinite Fall no es la única. Títulos como Emily is away o incluso OXENFREE han caminado por esa misma línea donde ahora desembarca Legendary Gary.
El título de Evan Rogers nos coloca en la piel de Gary, un treintañero que vive con su madre, tiene un trabajo monótono y aburrido en un supermercado y se evade más de lo que sería recomendable a través de un videojuego llamado Legend of the Spear. Imposible no sentirse identificado en alguno de estos puntos. Con esta premisa Legendary Gary nos lleva a vivir a través de su protagonista y experimentar su vida, tanto dentro como fuera del juego.
La idea de mezclar realidad y fantasía a través de un videojuego no es nueva, pero es el tono mumblecore que le aporta Rogers con lo que el título consigue transmitir sus objetivos. La vida de Gary es una mierda, o al menos eso es lo que él cree, y nos bastan una serie de pasajes mundanos para entenderlo.
Esto va desde las conversaciones con la madre de Gary hasta los objetos de su propia habitación, con un PC que hace las veces de altar, y que parece ser el único lugar en el que nuestro protagonista se siente seguro. Los escenarios son pocos y la interacción con ellos todavía menos, a excepción de un pequeño jardín que tendremos que cuidar. Roger tira de lugares comunes y personajes quizás demasiado prototipados, pero da igual, porque no hace falta más de media hora para comprobar que Legendary Gary no es un buen juego ni falta que le hace.
Tendemos a conceptualizar el videojuego en función de la suma de elementos en vez de en propuesta y resultado. Legendary Gary contiene una serie de mecánicas que si bien no se encuentran entre lo mejor del medio, consiguen su objetivo, que no es otro que llevarnos a donde Roger quiere. Tenemos dos partes bien diferenciadas, que son la vida real de Gary y la aventura de su avatar en el juego. La vida de Gary consiste en quejarse, trabajar, regar plantas y jugar. La vida de su avatar es en principio mucho más divertida… o no. Roger va entremezclando lo que ocurre en el juego con la propia vida de Gary, pero también la vida se introduce en el propio juego. Esto puede ser una explicación maniquea o simplemente una justificación hacia una falla, pero la sensación que tengo es que los combates por turnos sin ningún tipo de emoción bañados en banda sonora de xXSickXx no son casualidad. Los combates están bien construidos y cuentan con una serie de reglas que podían haber dado mucho más juego, pero no creo que Roger estuviera interesado en eso. Él quiere que avancemos, que descubramos qué sucede a nuestro alrededor y se ha esforzado mucho para lograrlo.
Jugarse todo a la carta de los diálogos y el apartado artístico es peligroso, pero conmigo al menos ha funcionado. Arte y animación de personajes recuerdan a un Ralph Bakshi contratado por la MTV de mediados de los noventa, mezclando ese toque un tanto feo en el dibujo de los personajes con unas animaciones extremadamente cuidadas. La forma de moverse de Gary en contraste con la de su avatar dicen mucho más que cien líneas de diálogo. A esto por supuesto hay que sumar el acierto de contar con xXSickXx, a quienes desconocía por completo y ahora son parte de mi BSO, para dar forma sonora al título. Vale, quizás por momentos suene todo TAN INDIE que te den ganas de gritar que esto no es Sundance, pero no le vamos a poner peros a lograr un objetivo.
Si a estas alturas se están preguntando si deberían probar Legendary Gary mi respuesta es que no tengo ni idea. Conmigo ha funcionado a pesar de todos sus defectos. La historia que cuenta me gusta y me encanta que el videojuego se encuentre traspasando esta frontera generacional. Por otro lado está la artesanía que destila. Se trata de uno de esos juegos en el que incluso los errores que contiene parecen estar gritando que forman parte del conjunto. Unas imperfecciones que lejos de molestar le otorgan personalidad y hacen de Legendary Gary una rara avis dentro del enorme catálogo del medio. Estoy deseando saber cuál va a ser el siguiente trabajo de Rogers y me ha encantado conocer a Gary, su madre y su pequeño universo en los suburbios. Esta es la mejor respuesta que puedo darles.
Pros
===
- Really innovative tactical strategy battle mechanic. We've never seen something like this before. I hope more professional game designers will take a look at this and get inspired.
- A quirky but consistent art direction.
Cons
====
- Amateurish, unorganic writing. Quite a fair bit of grammatical errors and doesn't really pack an emotional punch.
- Sterile scenes due to a lack of static animations (e.g. blinking eyes, etc would really help).
- Quite boring overall due to a lack of plot or emotional highlights.
story hit a bit too close to home, but i loved the game. can recommend.
Ho appena completato il gioco. È un RPG in cui noi controlliamo un ragazzo che gioca ad un RPG.
È piuttosto sognante e molto rilassato, descrive il quadro di una persona qualunque, appassionata di videogiochi e che come tanti deve anche fare i conti con la vita reale che fa paura a volte anche nella sua "normalità".
Non è un capolavoro, ma di sicuro un'esperienza gradevole. Interessante come si tratti di un'opera interamente realizzata da una persona, grafica inclusa.
盖瑞的现实生活是一团糟:辞退工作成为无业游民后处处遭人白眼;老妈被末日论洗脑,把家产全部捐给了教宗;交往多年的女友也提出了分手。
面对接踵而至的大危机,和所有死宅一样,盖瑞一如既往地选择了……靠游戏逃避现实!
高耸的猴面包树伸出枝桠拥抱天空,未曾见过的奇异生物游荡在色彩瑰丽的陌生土地上,这就是《圣矛传说》的世界。
游戏多好啊!大腹便便、死气沉沉的肥宅盖瑞摇身一变为高大健壮的勇士温卡利,即将迎娶国王的女儿。婚宴上,神秘的强敌现身,国王抛弃了自己的子民,带着圣矛迅速跑路,世界危在旦夕。所有人都说,勇士啊,只有你才能拯救世界……
醒醒啦死宅们,“只有你才能拯救 。”这道填空题,答案永远都只有“自己”啊!
是的,随着游戏的进行,盖瑞发现,《圣矛传说》中的人物和事件,全部都在影射自己的现实生活。或者说,现实里的事物全部都在影射游戏。
当游戏与现实纠缠不清、互相指涉的时候,你还会觉得游戏好玩吗?
根本不会好吧!与其说是游戏 ,还不如说是噩梦。
在一个与现实相呼应的异世界里寻找自我,已经不是什么新鲜的题材了。但是这类故事依然吸引人,大概是因为,大家还是希望能从毫无意义的人生里寻找到一丁半点的意义吧。把抛弃自己的父亲替换成落荒而逃的国王,把鸡毛蒜皮的生活烦恼替换成史诗级的大战,只有通过不断增加砝码,我们才会感觉到自己那些无足轻重的微小挣扎是有价值的。
可惜的是,虽然不难看出作者的用意,但是打通以后我并没有太多的感触,甚至还想捡垃圾。被虚幻类作品玩坏了奖赏通路的我,大概比盖瑞更加无可救药了……
游戏中的战斗采用六边形回合制战棋,最大的特色是可以预览下一回合的结局,还可以随时回溯到之前的回合,鼓励玩家多多尝试不同的战斗策略。
每种敌人也有自己的特色,尤其是最后几场boss战,不多动动脑子是很难顺利过关的。我才不会说战车那关我躲了几十个回合才搞明白怎么回事。
我最喜欢的一点是每场战斗结束后,可以回看整场连贯的战斗。看自己在敌人中闪转腾挪行云流水,成就感超强的!
不过,如果盖瑞没有用心记住现实生活中遇见的那些角色,或者忘记照料花园里的花,又或者熬夜打了游戏的话,他在游戏世界里的旅途也会遇到不小的挫折。
盖瑞在现实与游戏中的双重生活互为表里,缺一不可:游戏少了现实中的对应物,就显得缺乏人情味和深度;现实离了游戏,又乏味得似乎看不到希望。
配乐采用软绵绵的迷幻电子乐,有气无力的人声仿佛游离于时空之外,更加营造出一种亦真亦假的虚幻感。到了最后,现实与非现实的蕃篱一再被打破,真假显得不再重要,就连盖瑞的现实生活本身也变成了供玩家们体验的寓言故事。
神经科学实验揭示,人类的大脑处理真实世界和虚幻世界的过程并无二致,只是封装进了不同的盒子而已。那么,就让上帝的归上帝,图灵的归图灵吧。
Legendary Gary is bizarre and gorgeous and everything I've been looking for. You play as Gary. He's not really that legendary. Gary's story probably hits close to home for most of us. He lives a boring, average life & escapes it through video games. When the game he's been playing starts to parallel his everyday life, things get a little strange...
The turn-based combat system is unlike anything I've ever played -- this alone is worth trying. Actions are chosen at the beginning of each round, then all characters move at once. It takes the same ol' combat system we've seen for ages and spices it up a bit. Quite a bit, actually. It's like an elaborate dance, complete with sweet synth-pop tunes and sometimes turtles on stilts.
This is a must-play game. It's weird. You like weird, right? I mean, you made it this far down the page. I haven't beaten it yet, but I'll be back with updates.
An affecting an imaginative narrative game with inventive, if not particularly challenging, turn based combat. Legendary Gary’s characters occasionally feel flat, but it makes up for it with a unique, well-realised world. You probably already know whether it's going to be for you, and if you’re at all intrigued, I can’t see you being disappointed.
Watch the trailer, basically. If you love the music and the art, you’ll love Legendary Gary. It’s creative, subtle, clever, emotional, funny, and just such a successful imagining of one artists highly specific vision for a project that it playing feels like having a conversation with its creator. Its flaws only highlight how human, and how personal, the game truly is.
Introspective for Legendary Gary. Please note, it does contain spoilers.
A quirky RPG obviously made with lots of love. Amazing artwork, soundtrack, gameplay, and story. I was immediately hooked.
Legendary Gary is a REALLY neat game. Heavy moments, great character arcs, really clever storytelling, and absolutely fabulous soundtrack. Combat sequences are kind of mini-puzzles.
Very creative game with an interesting puzzle-combat system. A fun quickie, but feels very short for $15, and the ending is underwhelming.
Сказочное приключение между миром фантазии и реальностью.
Играем за простого парня, который находит утешение в компьютерной игре, но должен возвращаться в реальный мир и решать насущные проблемы.
Это что-то среднее между квестом и тактической стратегией. Половину игрового времени мы ходим, изучаем окружение, говорил с персонажами, выполняем небольшие квесты. Когда герой погружается в мир игры, то приключения в сказочном мире перемешиваются со сражениями. Вот тут игра напоминает пошаговые стратегии. Надо управлять героем и его отрядом на небольших картах и бить разнообразных врагов. Каждый шаг, удар, блок или передышку надо точно рассчитать и учитывать действия врагов. В случае неудачи бой можно переиграть или сделать ход назад и выбрать другие варианты действий для каждого персонажа.
Очень красивая и стильная игра. Художник поработал на славу, вложил в игру душу, подобрал великолепную музыку, создал свой, неповторимый сказочный мир!
Получилась отличная интерактивная история о печали и радости, о жизни, в которой стирается грань между реальностью и сказочным миром.
«Legendary Gary»
Смесь квеста и фэнтези-приключения с пошаговыми боями.
Гэри не слишком удачливый молодой человек. Его скучную, повседневную жизнь скрашивает компьютерная игра. Он живет между миром реальности и виртуальным. Тут он – простой неудачник, а в мире фантазий – непобедимый герой. Постепенно Гэри начинает замечать, что мир фантазии связан с реальностью…
Геймплей:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5cNCsBTyz0
Нам предстоит помочь Гэри преодолеть трудности и найти свое место в жизни. От нашего выбора зависит не только судьба главного героя, но и его друзей и семьи. Этот выбор поступков мы делаем в диалогах. Если вы заставляете Гэри делать эгоистичные поступки, он теряет мотивацию. Это приводит к тому, что некоторые варианты ответов в диалогах будут вам не доступны!
Когда Гэри садится за компьютер, нас переносят в игру. Тут мы путешествуем в сказочном мире и сражаемся в пошаговых битвах. Бои довольно сложные, требуют особой тактики. Они близки к головоломкам, в которых надо точно рассчитать каждый шаг. Можно откатывать ходы и смотреть модель предстоящих ударов и передвижений. Людям, любящим шахматы, тактические стратегии или головоломки с точным расчетом, такие бои понравится, а любителям динамичного геймплея бои могут показаться скучными и тяжелыми.
Больше всего в этой игре меня поражает великолепный стиль рисунков и музыка. Мне даже не с чем сравнить. Это шедевр, который найдет свою аудиторию и фанатов. У художника богатая фантазия и талант. Мир игры получился уникальный, стильный и незабываемый. Музыка потрясающая.
В «Legendary Gary» нет русского языка, а диалоги имеют большое значение в прохождении. Поэтому для игры необходимы знания английского.
I don't know how to put into words how much I enjoyed this game. Not to mention the game within the game. Absolutely wonderful... even made me cry a few times.
Having played through this game, I can say that it works and is functional. The concept itself is interesting, but frankly I find no surprises or further interest beyond the introductory plot development. The story progresses in a manner that is rather easy to guess, and frankly the combat is as equally challenging.
The aesthetics are as seen on display, it reminds me of a higher range flash based game. Which may be better phrased as, there is nothing I qualify as impressive or noteworthy in the quality of animation for this visual work. I don't expect this game to last more than, roughly, six hours on a single run for an experienced player.
I haven't tried probing for multiple endings, or branching outcomes, but I suspect that it won't be particularly hard to reach a desired outcome for a first run through the game. The majority of content to play through doesn't appeal to me for replay value, so I'm not verifying if there are various good, or a true, ending.
If I'm going to recommend this game positively or negatively, I'm going to lean on the latter side: given the quality of games avaialble for the same price tag is at a minimum competitive if not better, and I have doubts this game is the sort to find significant play times or replayable for most buyers. If you have money to burn, there are worse things to spend it on, but I would not go in expecting a cult classic.
This game is pretty great. The art is fantastic, the music is awesome, the tactics style RPG elements are fun, and the story is intriguing.
Heres a quick video of the first 20 min or so if youre curious about how the game is bot an RPG and a nerdy adventure game:
If you're looking to get weird you've come to the right shop window.
The weird is in here. All of it. It's not the nonsensical kind of weird but the mundane kind that creeps up on you because this title has such a relaxed unassuming approach to telling it's story that your likely to fall right into the narrative without even trying and suddenly your in that hazy dream you can't ever remember when you wake up.
-Essentially your playing in a frame story and it's a frame story that's really just another frame story in and of itself because of the almost 4th wall nature of playing a game about a guy playing a game and the things that go on in his life at the same time.
-The artwork makes me think of a well illustrated childern's book if the illustrations where to start moving around on the page as you read it.
-There's an interesting turnbased combat system that has both the player's turn and the ai's turn play out simaltaneusly. It's enganging enough to say i'm intrigued and impressed as this has to be one of the more creative games I've played in years.
Too early too give it a big review but I'm going to go ahead and say you should own it because the little i've seen so far is already worth the price of admission.
Legendary Gary carrega o nome de Evan Rogers, o programador de What Remains of Edith Finch. Isso já é suficiente para atrair o público que busca títulos independentes que oferecem boas narrativas e experiências visuais originais. Em grande parte, pode-se dizer que o jogo é exatamente isso, com seus cenários desenhados à mão, somados a diálogos e eventos bem escritos. Legendary Gary, no entanto, ainda consegue utilizar elementos clássicos do RPG para discutir a vida contemporânea, cria um sistema de combate complexo ao mesmo tempo que não é punitivo, e discute o uso entorpecente de videogames por uma geração pouco habituada a lidar com a própria desmotivação e falta de responsabilidade. É um título extremamente importante para a indústria, pois discute videogames e jogadores a partir de uma perspectiva interna; ao invés de se valer de acusações infundadas, quer fazer o jogador refletir sobre sua própria experiência, assim mostrando que jogos eletrônicos podem ser mais do que uma mera distração, mas ferramentas de criação poderosas e instigantes. Infelizmente, o jogo não está disponível em português.
Vorsicht Kunst!
Ziemlich einzigartig designter, handgemalter Adventure/RPG-Mix der von einer abgefahrenen Story und ebenso krassem Soundtrack eingerahmt wird.
Wir spielen Gary, seines Zeichens Vollnerd, der den lieben langen Tag nur sein MMO "Legend of the Spear" zocken will, aber dem allerhand "Reallife-Müll" in die Quere kommt.
... und plötzlich fängt Spiel und Realität an, sich mir einander zu vermischen :D irgendwie...
Rundenbasiertes Kampfsys, and das man sich durchaus erst gewöhnen muss (war zumindest bei mir so), aber das "bockt" auch wenn die Anzahl der Kämpfe natürlich nicht mit einem Final Fantasy mithalten kann, aber das will das Spiel auch gar nicht sein...
Wer Lust hat, sich das ganze mal in Bewegung anzuschauen, der ist herzlich bei mir aufm Kanal eingeladen.
An dieser Stelle auch vielen Dank an Evan Rogers, der das Spiel erdacht, programmiert und vor allen Dingen gezeichnet hat und mir den Key vorab für meinen kleinen Kanal zur Verfügung gestellt hat.
Gary年过二十,仍旧是个肥宅。他不修边幅、床榻散乱、每天的时间除去睡觉就是在玩电脑。父亲意外去世,母亲头发花白,他丢掉了工作,却心安理得当着家里蹲,将朋友的劝阻当作马耳东风,终日沉迷于游戏中。
Gary是个无比平凡的人,天天过着平凡的生活。直到有一日,他在门前的台阶上发现了一个古朴的神秘匣子,从中寻得了一款名为《矛之传说》的游戏下载码。这款游戏让他风平浪静的生活有了转折,因为他逐渐发现,在生活中发生的一切事情都被投影到了游戏里。这款游戏,就是他自己的每日在虚拟世界下的再现。
母亲、恋人、嬉笑怒骂的朋友、冷酷又唯利是图的老板、还有形形色色的员工们... ...他们全都保留着自己的特征,为了这趟旅途从现实中被重塑而来。山间的小镇与奇幻国度被神的力量所串联,巨树、深海、龙之国度的画卷在虚拟的世界中被铺展开。随着Gary的探索和战斗,他的内心也将充满新的动力。游戏总有一天会结束,终于是时候让自己的现实重新步入正轨了。
本作就是这样一款在虚拟世界中寻找真实感的策略RPG。事实上战斗与策略仅存在于Gary所玩的游戏《矛之传说》中,而充斥各种选项的现实更像是AVG。若是提到游戏与现实相互关联的作品,很多人都会首先想起刀剑神域,但和它“这虽然是游戏, 但可不是闹着玩的”观点相左,本作的主旨则是“游戏是为了更好的现实”。
连接游戏与现实之间的核心是“干劲”系统。干劲在现实里赋予Gary更强的行动力,充足的睡眠能够提升干劲,熬夜则会损失干劲。在游戏中战胜敌人会给予Gary以成就感,并因此增加他的干劲值。现实的对话中也可能会使Gary的干劲发生增减,但干劲的作用只有一个,就是让Gary做出不同的选择。游戏中的个别选项有干劲需求,数值未达到便不能选择该选项,这些选项看上去要比其它的更加强硬积极,如果玩家想要让Gary表现得像一个更好的人,自然会努力积攒干劲以选择这些选项。
以六角战棋作基础的战斗系统非常温柔。在每回合开始时,你都能通过拉动下方箭头来预先观看敌人本回合的动作,并据此调整我方人物行动,即便一时疏忽也不要紧,你还可以选择将时间倒回上一回合来重新部署,而无论是观看未来还是回到过去,都不需要付出任何代价。这就让战斗变得十分惬意,但又因为敌人拥有多种行为模式而并不轻松,有些战斗仍需要玩家动脑思考破敌之法才能取胜。
每次战斗结束后,系统会将原本被多个回合打散的战斗串联起来,播放整场战斗的录像,玩家可以尽情欣赏流畅的战斗场面。这也使玩家在对系统熟悉之后,努力打出更加漂亮的战斗场面,例如凭借走位使敌人自相残杀,或是电光石火之间便结束战斗。
评价
一款非常健康的游戏,在各种意义上都是。
本作表现的内容是“复刻现实的游戏”,能让玩家看到原来现实中平淡乏味的事情原来也可以充满挑战。战斗过程轻松写意但又不乏趣味性,并不需要玩家过度集中精神。Gary的空闲时间全都投入到了游戏上,但这并没有让他变成废人或失败者,反而因为在游戏中积攒了干劲,从而在现实中更加充满活力,成为了一个更好的人。是否熬夜打游戏全凭玩家自己选择,但第二天很有可能出现就差这熬夜扣减的1点干劲而无法点选的选项,迫使玩家反思并下决心不再熬夜。干劲的扣减除了引导玩家处理好游戏与现实之间的平衡外,也在帮助玩家在交涉和谈话中变得更加聪明。一句话,爱游戏,爱生活。
所有手绘均来自作者Evan Rogers一人,他在《艾迪芬奇的记忆》中担任的是Gameplay programmer一职,没想到他拿起画笔来也毫不含糊。本作的场景十分令人惊艳,难以想象这是仅凭一人,并且还是个程序员画出来的。不过和场景相比,人设就不怎么样了,丢到人群里就消失、小腹还微微隆起的Gary,面容粗犷穿着宛如原始人的Winkali,以及只丑不萌的怪物们,着实是让我在看到这游戏的截图之后第一印象分剧减,真可谓一半是天使,一半是魔鬼。不过还好,实际游戏体验时的人物要比截图中好很多。
音乐由xXsickXx创作,为synthpop风格,听来确有种将现实和奇幻结合起来的感觉。Gary的家里不会凭空播放音乐,只会有窗外汽车行驶而过的声音,因此本作第一次出现音乐是Gary在游玩《矛之传说》的时候。但坦白说,这第一首曲子《Do It You》选的是真不怎么样,它的前奏十分诡异,第一句歌词乍听之下也让人感觉五音不全,让我这种从未听过synthpop的人一瞬间有种静音的冲动。
本作最大的败笔在于龙之国度(乌龟国度?)内容重复度极高的三天。整个游戏大概只有八天左右的时间,三天在其中占据了相当大的比重。现实中,Gary需要完成枯燥无味的解雇行动,对应到游戏中则是每天利用现实中的名字来找出一个背叛者。这三天中场景不会出现任何切换,完成方式也毫无区别,游玩过程中我感受到了极大的乏味,以及不情愿玩下去却被游戏推着走的感受,这也和《艾迪芬奇的记忆》中每位家族成员均有不同的叙事体验形成了鲜明的对比。
不过总体来说,本作音画精致、战斗策略选择丰富,内涵积极,虽然流程仅有3小时左右,但仍不失为一款值得体验的游戏。主要缺点除去上述所说重复度极高的三天之外,就是缺乏重复游玩价值,以及选项的欺骗性问题了,这个容我在牛关的完整版评测中再详细说明。
Legendary Gary is a unique indie game with a positive message about how games can influence our lives for the better and give us a feeling of agency when we're feeling trapped.
Full review: https://youtu.be/BdyCROIMjl8
My favorite features:
-A unique turn-based/simultaneous combat system that turns battles into puzzles and is very satisfying to master
-A very nice soundtrack
-A meaningful motivation system that limits your options based on choices you've made
-A very well-written story which changes drastically depending on your choices and actions
My least favorite features:
-Mouse-only controls (mostly fine, but I found click-to-walk annoying)
-Some wonky pathfinding in a couple of places
Overall, a highly recommended game if this is your type of thing.
<I recieved this game for free, but I was not paid to endorse it.>
Oh, godamn. This game really is something. Killer music, stunning visuals, great story & humour with a nice dose of great characters. The combat system is amazing too, and is what drove me to continue my playthrough, as it's just so gosh darn fun. If you like the idea of RPG's but are tired of fantasy archetypes and boring turn based combat this'll be right up your alley.
I was sipping my coffee, as I do first thing in the morning, when a mysterious chest appeared on my doorstep. Inside its solid gold crust lay a satin interior, and nestled on top was a golden ticket. Reaching in, I picked it up – It was from my editor. It read, “Legendary Gary – Get it done by the 19th!” followed by a secret code.
I couldn’t believe my luck, I’d wanted to review the game since I first seen it. The artwork felt like it came from a Heavy Metal magazine, the music was somehow reminiscent of the Talking Heads, and the gameplay looked like a cross between adventure and RPG. I was elated. Looking down at the elaborate packaging that my prize arrived in, I realized one thing was for certain…
