As before with Hiragana Battle, I absolutely recommend this game to anyone starting Japanese. It's a must play. These two games will set up a solid foundation on your Japanese learning journey.
the gameplay is fine, story is ok, but most importantly this actually helps me learn katakana faster, i can recognize almost all katakana character in just a few days, also charlotte is cute

An instant improvement over its prequel 'Hiragana Battle'.
Hiragana Battle was extremely basic; it did what it needed to do, and it worked well, but its UI elements felt clumsy and its character progression was lacking. Katakana War fixes that with a clean user interface; neat and tidy answer windows; better RPG progression; and a degree of focus and polish the original sorely needed.
As soon as the game starts, being prompted to enter your own name, class, and select a preferred gender tells you just how much more effort they're putting in right out of the gate, but my experience was something like that of a rollercoaster.
There's voice acting for the characters! Yay! But they're all Americans claiming to be Australian, or from European or Slavic countries, with absolutely zero accent. Boo!
There's more than four stock characters! Yay! But they (including the protagonist) total 8. Progressing the game even at a slow pace means that if you're looking to max out everyone's affection, since YOU cannot leave the party, there will always be one character left out, who you'll just have to grind with for an hour whilst the finale patiently waits for you. Boo!
There's more than one music track for battles, including fun little special versions of those tracks when fighting certain bosses. Yay! But music tracks don't loop well. Boo!
There's a variety of special effects and magic spells to be had. Yay! But there was no consideration put into audio stacking (getting much louder) when affecting more than one enemy, resulting in having to turn the volume down. Boo!
Anyway...
It's nice that these characters - accent-starved as they are - get a lot more banter between eachother, but my opinion vacillated on whether I liked them or not. I know 'annoying human with no concept of actually *being* a human' is a common anime character trait, but the game seemed to be making your party members juggle endearing qualities and loathesome ones from scene to scene, and I went back and forth between laughing and cringing.
Speaking of laughter, it is a funny game with a lot of charm, and altogether has a salubrious effect, but what's important is that it works.
It helps familiarise Katakana just as effortlessly as Hiragana Battle did with Hiragana, but since Katakana focuses on loan words (foreign words taken from other languages), the game often seems to run out of material, and takes the time to teach you Hiragana. I really, truly don't see why. So many of my notes (you WILL need a notepad, trust me) contain me having to confusedly specify that the game swapped from Katakana words to Hiragana words for no real reason. I think a more strict focus on Katakana would have been appreciated. A scant few words are in both Hiragana and Katakana, but the game doesn't explain why both are used in the same word.
But yeah, I walked away happy and confident that I could revise both alphabets well. I know Kanji, vocab and grammar are Japanese's real threats, but just like Hiragana Battle, Katakana War is effective at effortlessly making its subject matter easy to digest. I really recommended Katakana War, with the caveat you finish Hiragana Battle beforehand.
It's a wonderful program.

I love this game. Very well designed game. I was able to pick up some of the katakana I been stuck on without getting bored. I going to buy the other two games. Hiragana and Kanji. I'm quite excited to see the kanji version.
I played through the game in a few days. It was really fun. The basic story is okay.
Can you learn katakana through the game? Yes, you can!
You don't just learn katakana, but also whole words, some grammar, and cultural aspects of Japanese culture.
The katakana symbols are taught gradually, including voice output, so you know how to pronounce them.
I can't wait to start with the kanji sequel!

I had already played the predecessor with the hiragana alphabet. You don't have to have played the predecessor, but I think it makes sense. Every now and then, whole words are taught. I'm glad that the game didn't just write typical Japanese words in katakana, but also displayed them in hiragana alongside romaji. These words are optional in this game and are just nice to know.
I am fighting hard not to give this one a negative review.
The reasons for that lie in technical and gameplay details.
For the technical issue: The game has freezing bugs where it runs with 1 FPS occasionally. I tested this game on different machines and this issue occurs either at the end-of-combat screen or the max-friendship dialogue with a character to unlock his ultimate.
For the biggest gameplay issue that I have: The dialog is extremely cringey to a point where I dropped the game and learned Katakana the old fashioned way. I then got back to this game to manifest the Katakana into my head and then decided to skip most of the dialog.
By doing so I got to enjoy a fairly decent combat system that is improvemed from its predecessor, Hiragana battle. You can now see the battle order of each charackter and can plan your attacks accordingly. Additionally, the Kana table is now a table and not a one dimensional list anymore. This makes navigating a lot easier.
A gripe that I have is that the game made the magic system a bit too strong for my case. With that you don't have to name the specific Katakana, but throw a spell at it or them (AOE is a thing here). This takes away from the purpose of the game, to learn the Katakana. At a later point Ultimates are introduced which don't even consume magic. For an easy ride you give Daisuke a Speed Ring and spam GALAXY VOID at the beginning of each battle to bulldoze through the game. At least the devs made sure you have to name the Katakana once to finish them. Otherwise they stay at 1 HP.
The main charackter is also a nitpick. He is a generic noname who looks up to Daisuke but has nothing to add on each conversation that is going on. But he somehow still leads the group despite Daisuke being the true leader. It's weird.
For the ending I praised the predecessor for its nice twist that it introduced before fighting the end-boss. This is sadly completely missing here. I would have liked to fight through vocabulary you learned through the game. The end-boss is half a copy paste from the predecessor as well. Nothing extraordenary to mention here.
So why the thumbs up? Because it teached me the small vowel Katakana and provided me with a list of them. I wasn't entirely aware of this field, but the game made it easier for me to understand. Also the side quests teached me new vocabulary that differ from the predecessor as well.
A last note: The game is playable without playing the predecessor or knowing Hiragana, however I would suggest that you learn the hiragana table first, because a lot of vocabulary this game offers is written in hiragana.

This is a game for learning Katakana, one of the 3 Japanese alphabets. It is pretty good at it - by tuning standard JRPG repetition into learning drill.
It plays as a generic JRPG, and a fairly good one. The story is nothing revolting but fairly well-done.
However keep in mind some of the negatives:
-If you are not interested in learning the language and only gameplay/story you might be a bit disappointed.
-That the supposedly "RUSSIAN" girl is named MISCHA is ultra dumb. She should be Serbian - in Russian(as well as in Ukrainian, Belarussian, and most other similar) languages, name Mischa is the short version of name Mikhail (Mike). It is NEVER a female name. Only in Serbia & some other Balkan states it is somehow a female name.

Game is nothing grand, but so far I think it's working and it's entertaining enough even if the story makes no sense if you think about it even a moment.
Good: Basic RPG (16bit style) set up is overall fun. Maybe slight "dating sim" style get to know your teammates. Entertaining enough way to learn Katakana.
Eh: There seems to be class types (mage/fighter at least, I haven't unlocked magic yet) but it's not clear at the start what they are or who is what class. Unlike most RPGs where its pretty easy to tell (or sometimes flat out told to you immediately) who is meant for what job in the party.
Bad: The story makes no sense. You're in Japan and need to learn the language but then monster Katakana characters arrive and somehow only ONE Japanese native realizes you just need to speak the character to defeat them? Would make more sense if you were in maybe Europe or America and this happens and you stumble across a Japanese English teacher on vacation recruits you to help with the same set up. Also at the start they're like "oh everyone ran off in fear" so you just hijack an entire apartment building and the next day randomly got a dozen people wandering around town?
The sound QC is also pretty bad. When attacking it all is kind of hard to make out. When they're speaking (which sometimes they'll say part of their dialogue, sometimes all, or sometimes none) it's clear each VA recorded their stuff on their own. Some sound fine, others a bit metallic/tinny, and some you'd expect it was a 10 dollar PC mic from the early 2000s.

Very much an improvement over hiragana battle, in several ways.
Firstly, the difference in presentation is clear: most RTP map assets have been replaced by custom ones, there's voice acting and large portraits of characters, and sourced royalty free music is used in place of RTP music. The game does not feel like your average hobbyist RPG anymore, though there's some beginner mistakes like the music often not looping correctly, the sound effects of multi-hit skills being very loud, and some dungeon exits being handles improperly (for example, the train station dungeon exiting into the old train station). Nothing game breaking though.
Secondly, the educational content is better, and there's more of it. The main story is longer, so you have more opportunities to practice your knowledge against enemies, and there's more sidequests which will teach you vocabulary in both hiragana and katakana.
Thirdly, combat sees a major improvement. The mana bar has a reason to exist, meaning every character gets a variety of spells to use. A good compromise is that you cannot defeat an enemy with a spell that deals damage, you have to deal the finishing blow with a kana skill. There's also boss battles now, which are just a series of kana stuffed into one enemy that deals a lot more damage.
It's not perfect though.
The game is longer, but it contains a lot of dialog that has nothing to do with japanese whatsoever. Your party members (all 7 of em) have something to say in most scenes. It's entertainment value varies from bad to decent.
Also can I just ask: why does this game have heart-to-heart events? It's really just filler, a sort of distraction from the learning part. It wasn't for me, maybe someone else will feel different about it. And there's more than 20 of these events? If it would've included some vocabulary or some japanese cultural things I would've appreciated it more, but alas.
The most important question is: do I remember anything after playing it?
I think I can write about 80% of the katakana from memory, and I remember some new words in katakana. I did try learning katakana before starting this game, but that kinda failed as katakana does not seem to want to stick around for long. This is because they seem a bit confusing at first, some looking alike or similar to hiragana but sounding completely different.
If anything, this game is definitely a less painful way of learning katakana than any tool out there is, at least in my opinion.
Hiragana battle was a steal at 6 euros, this game even more so.
Recommended, but you should know what you get - and what you won't.
This game focuses on training Katakana. You do not need to know Hiragana before starting this game, and it won't help you all that much - just know that in japanese texts Hiragana is much more common. You will get shown some japanese words, but there is no training for the words. Only for the symbols.
The "story" is rather sub-par, and none of the characters stand out in a good way. Which is ok-ish for a training game, just don't expect too much.
Finally there is the low price. If you feel lke you have a Katakana-shaped hole in your knowledge, this game is a both a cheap and a focused way to fill this hole. Therefore it is recommended.
This game is surprisingly fun, especially once you get past the first hour.
Initially, it does feel just like a really bad RPG, but eventually the game does begin to include actually strategy in defeating the Katakana.
Learning wise, I do think my Katakana skills have improved. If you're looking for just a casual way to study it, I recommend it.
Only annoying part was achievement hunting, the affection achievement especially is tedious, but besides that, the game was surprisingly fun and I enjoyed playing it.

I do not know that using this game on it's own will make you learn faster than from a book on its own, but in combination it's really quite effective. This game is perfect for making you recognize the katakana as someone who struggled with them.
The story is kinda boring, but serviceable. Voice acting as rough around the edges. Combat is nothing special. But I came to this game with one goal; learn the Katakana. Did I do that? Yes.
Do I regret not playing this game sooner? Yes. If you want to learn the katakana, get a textbook or online worksheets and play this game alongside. Without hesitation I can recommend this game for its intended purpose. Especially on sale.

If you're looking as a beginner a good way to review katakana, I think this is worth the time. It's definitely not the fastest way, but if you're looking for something fun to push your katakana review, I think it's not bad.
If I were to recommend order:
Hiragana Forbidden => Katakana War => Kanji Combat and skip the basic hiragana game unless you're really struggling with Hiragana and need to have multiple games. But these games are much better as review/reinforcement tools, barring maybe Kanji Combat.
The Good:
1. This is a pretty good way to review katakana. I'm not sure I'd completely learn from this game, but if you're looking as a beginner to just reinforce katakana this is a great tool
2. Some of the music is kinda a banger? There's a couple things that kinda get annoying after a while, but the weapon shop theme and the Obake world theme? Pretty dope
3. To be honest it's actually got a better JRPG system than I thought it would have. Is it amazing? No, but it did get me building a speed setup to go buffer => AoE mage => physical answers to finish off, which is cool that there's some level of optimization. That being said you can kinda just brute force if you want, there's not really a lot of stat or DPS checks
The Neutral:
1. This is about the most standard JRPG story. Don't expect to be wow'd
2. The way music loops is kinda weird
The Bad:
1. Some character side stories are just not very exciting
2. Weird bugs randomly, nothing soft locking but some animation slow down
3. Doesn't work on steam deck very well
If you're hoping to run this under proton, don't bother. Tried a number of versions but never got beyond a black screen and some joyful music. As it's an HTML/javascript based game, Starting from the index.html or even adding a <base> tag didn't do anything.
According to protondb others don't seem to have these issues.. but ubuntu 24.04 is a no-go
Very good, educational game. I did find a glitch in the underground mission called something like "take back osaka". During this mission, if after you find Kyoko you decide to cross the same bridge you already crossed, you can do the same encounter infinitely, but the cutscene is broken.
Very helpful game for learning Katakana. As someone who struggles remembering the characters this has helped me learn a lot faster than other language methods. I have had no issues with the game itself. I would recommend it.

Unfortunately I cannot recommend this game. Game itself is nice, you can fight and exercise katakana signs and learn some basic phrases but since like the middle of the game, the game starts to crash after every battle so it is getting very frustrating.

The game is fine but a random game breaking bug prevents you to play it.
It freezes in the background. You can still save the game (if you know by heart how to move in the menu blindly) but the screen is completely frozen.
If it happened only once per hour, it could still be playable, but I had it every minute or so... Unplayable.
Note that it didn't happen in the first hours... A memory leak of some kind?

I'm moving to Japan soon and I've been struggling a lot to learn Katakana. I'm not very good at straight memorization, and it's not used quite as much as Hiragana, so it's been harder to get continuous exposure. This game helped me out so much. The game is paced very well, with it giving you a set of characters, then a full dungeon of about 30min or more to practice what you've learned. Then it gives you the next set. I can't say I can fluently read Katakana now that I've beaten the game, but I can recognize most characters and slowly sound things out now. Which is a great place to be. I would definitely recommend it if you're having some trouble memorizing and want to be able to play a fun game while you learn and practice. It's also a solid RPG.
The game is an improvement to the hiragana-game before.

Like Hiragana, this is definitely a decent tool to help you learn, while you practice at the beginning. It does fade off fast though and you will likely out pace the game.

Ну а что касается самой подачи материала, то лучше для начала пройти предыдущую игру по хирагане, а уже потом браться за эту, иначе некоторые моменты будут непонятны.
Learn Japanese To Survive! Katakana War is a turn based rpg educational game that uses katakana characters as the monsters with the player 'attacking' with the romaji or English sound of said katakana character. This game features a number of refinements over the Hiragana version.
One of the refinements in the katakana game over the hiragana game is menu layout is much better and easier to locate the command the player wishes to use laid out in a, i, u, e, o. Which greatly speeds up the player's ability to locate what they are looking for. Although at the time of this review (I'm at na, ni, nu, ne, no), I have not reached ya, yu, yo or wa, wo to figure out how the game handles them. I'd still prefer keyboard entries over the menu, but this game is not nearly as frustrating in menu navigation.
Additionally, this game has the party members execute their 'attack' individually instead of the player forced to select all party member's actions before starting 'combat'. This change made the game quite fun for me. Even if I haven't reached any katakana characters i didn't already have memorized before playing. This alone is a huge improvement over the hiragana survive game.
The game also features swappable party members. Which actually had me wanting to grind/practice areas I've cleared. Not a bad thing in an educational game. The 'monster' encounters are done more like Zelda II instead of like Final Fantasy/Dragon Warrior if you know those NES games. And I found that to also be an excellent quality of life improvement. I could seek out harder or easier groups of katakana character monsters for more or less practice. Rather than them just sprung on me.
As mentioned, I've already familiarized myself with most katagana before starting to play this game. I would recommend prospective players to do the same. At the time of this review, I have hiragana memorized and about 75% of katakana. The game is more about reinforcing and finishing memorizing last little bit. I think using flashcard and spending time writing each character daily is still fundamental with the game as support in learning.
I actually couldn't recommend the hiragana game in this series. I found it a little too frustrating with too much time spent navigating menus to be effective even for support learning. However, this katakana game fixes enough of those issues as well as some things I didn't know I had an issue with for an enjoyable game. And in fact, there is a bit of traditional turn-based rpg here as well. The player needs to use party/monster turn order, character damage and monster hit points (katakana monsters become more powerful further into the 'alphabet' you get) to dispatch them with minimal harm to your party.
I do recommend Learn Japanese To Survive! Katakana War. With the understanding the game is much more enjoyable if you study away from it.

### Gameplay
- It has the same controls as the previous game, and it felt like it probably used the same game to some extent.
- They added alot of spells that I did not end up using because I wanted to learn and practice my katakana memorization. You also get more health now so the enemies don’t two shot you.
- I’m not sure if it really works for me, but the game makers really tried to make this like a visual novel, woo your companion kind of thing and I really just wanted information. The voice acting took me out of my element sometimes and they had scenes in between that were just trying to be funny? I do give them an A for improving on their previous game!
- I appreciate that they put alot less enemies in the game. It used to be like pokemon with random encounters, but now you see the enemies drifting about and they don’t respawn when you kill them. That was a great improvement.
### Graphics & Art Style
- This still has the same style as the previous game, but they definitely hired people to make actual characters this time!
- I didn’t really care to have companions and that is on me, I am seeing this game as more of an educational supplement.
### Overall Impressions
- *What did you like most?* I liked that they made the enemies less OP, and that it was a good balance of repetition. They made grinding more into quests so that felt better than just wandering aimlessly through an area. Having the pseudo companions definitely made the game feel more robust.
- *What didn’t work well?* Needing to essentially have those random dating sim-like encounters in order to unlock spells that I didn’t use. That may be a ME issue tho.
- *Would you recommend it?* I would definitely recommend it to someone who just wants to learn or brush up on their katakana.

I used to know the japanese alphabets but mostly forgot them. Probably makes the game much easier for me. I don't think it's for anyone other than complete noobs though, it won't do you any good unless you don't know any japanese whatsoever. An English version would be like this: Monsters in the shapes of English letters that you attacked by recognizing what those letters are. They'll also teach a random word or phrase here or there, such as "good morning." I have doubts about a significant improvement in speaking Japanese after finishing this game. That said, I still like it. Good way to learn the Japanese alphabet.
Good concept, i'm just terrible at it
best game in the series in my opinion but still very flawed, teaches Katakana mostly well enough but has a bunch of features that have nothing to do with learning Japanese(like the bond events) and glosses over or entirely skips some things such as the katakana for "vu" that wasn't even mentioned at all(ヴ, though is very rarely used anyway so it's not an issue) and the concept of small vowels that was only briefly mentioned at times(and unless I'm remembering wrong the game even says we'll go more in depth on them later just to never really do it, maybe it does as some side quest I missed but not in the main quest)
Cool simple game for practicing Katakana
This game achieves well what it sets out to do - helping players memorize katakana in a way more entertaining than flashcards. Stroke order and pronunciation are included with every attack.
The downside is the game is extremely unstable and crashes constantly. Make sure you save every time you do anything. The interface to change the control scheme also seems to be glitched, leaving you without the ability to switch to WASD controls.
For now, I am good not having to learn Japanese to survive. At worst, I just have to run it in the background for some hours for dropping cards.
But, who knows in the future...
As an RPG, it's nothing special. But it doesn't want to be, it wants to help you memorize all them Katakana. And that it does very well.

Game is actually pretty great and is a fun rpg
It's a pretty good game. The voice acting is a little funny, but it has a charm. I went into this as a refresher to help me tell apart some of the more similar looking katakana like tsu and shi etc and it did the trick, but even starting from 0 this should help you get there. There is some really dumb humor but its so dumb that its actually funny. All in all I would say it's definitely worth your while and I will certainly continue to play it occasionally even now that I've 100%ed it because even putting the learning aspect aside, it's a fun little rpg and I haven't seen anything like this series.
Much like the Hiragana entry, I personally found this game was decent supplemental material for helping the katakana stick when I was first learning them. If you can catch it on sale then this product is absolutely worth the price.

Played the first game and this one was a lot more polished. It was nice seeing the improvements. Learning in this repetitive manor as well as being introduced to vocabulary was surprisingly fun if you enjoy old rpg games.

The first "game", Hiragana Battle, focused much more on the teaching aspect. I finished that game able to read Hiragana, but this one focuses a lot more on the game and the story. For some reason there is a dating sim in this too. I think the devs should have just focused more on what we were here for.

This sequel is much more polished than the original hiragana game. The use of plugins really enhances things and the art and design are both better as well. As a teaching tool it is engaging and the combination of hearing the sound and having the strokes appear when you attack is really effective.
I am so impressed by the improvement in game making skill between the first and second one and am generally inspired by this series. It combines two of my favorite things. RPG Maker and learning Japanese. I would definitely recommend this one!

Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.

This is just like Learn Japanese ... Hiragana Battle but significantly improved in multiple aspects. Improved graphics, improved UI, no more frustrating random battles and more side quests. Wasn't a fan of the relationship system, but it can be essentially ignored and is not important to completing the game.

Battle has changed to touching enemy to fight for XP vs random encounter.
I wasn't super fond of the player movement but would still highly recommend for people wanting to brush up on basic alphabet and words.
An actual amazing way to learn Katakana, which I had been trying to do for years with a book. Was able to learn almost everything in a couple of days.
Only issue is at level 5 the battle results start to load really slow

This is the second game in the series (the game teaches you hiragana), and has vast improvements.
There is voice acting now, and you can win affection over your comrades like a dating sim, granting them extra abilities in battle. The story is a bit generic, but more effort was at least put in than the first game, and you even get your own snazzy apartment with its own theme song.
No more random encounters! you can just walk around enemies if you don't want to fight.
The menu is much better, you can now see all of the vowels (a,i,u,e,o) arranged all mostly in one big square screen, making it easy to select characters (even with the mouse, and you can now select enemy targets with the mouse too).
There's an interesting mechanic (that was present in the first game as well) that switches it up so you need to input the katakana radical instead of the romaji - I like this as it reinforces your learning even more.
The soundtrack is J-Pop and traditional Japanese Music inspired, and is way more catchy and fitting than the last game, The boss battle theme rocks way harder than it should. Sounds like something straight out of a modern anime. If you are a fan of JRPGs like Chrono Trigger, you will feel right at home.
You could probably learn this stuff faster though a textbook or online, but lets be honest: playing a video game is way more fun and engaging. And the coolest thing is that you will actually be able to use the stuff you learn in this game in real life, so it's like you level up in real life.

Has a good story, soundtrack and graphics ... and most importantly I mastered katakana with it!
Better than Hiragana Battle. Here it's actually possible to play without cheating or grind. Combat is more forgiving, more quality of life features and better economy (because you're not forced to spend all you can on revives and healing). Voice acting and story is rather "undercooked" though.
Good way to recap what you already know and fill in the blanks, not so much to start learning from scratch, because the game does not provide associations (for example - カ (ka) - KAtana cutting paper, ア (a) - Axe) which does not make learning katakana easier. However, next game about kanji does provide associations.
If you like RPGs and want to learn Japanese - try it.

I'm going to judge this three ways: as a sequel, as a game, and as a learning tool.
As a sequel: It fixes many of the mistakes of its predecessor, but adds a few of its own. For one it takes place exclusively in Japan now which is a deeply, deeply strange decision for a game about living katakana symbols who can only be hurt by making the correct noise at them. It's not clear why all of the random Japanese people you meet aren't just out there reading the characters instead of relying on six foreigners who are having to learn them as they go.
As a game: It's pretty bad. They tried to make the RPG battling a bit more interesting this time around which really just gets in the way of what you're here for: matching shapes. The story and characters are pretty bad, and the gameplay (while better than the previous entry) is bland.
As a learning tool: I think a person would struggle quite a bit to use this alone as a way to learn katakana. It's mostly a convoluted wrapper on the concept of flash cards, so if you're looking for an excuse to do flash cards, this could work.

As I said in my review of Learn Japanese to Survive! Hiragana Battle, I also utilized this game to practice Katakana. When it comes to originality, the sequel is an improvement in most ways, such as original character art, nice voice acting, stories and affection system, but I personally feel indifferent about these and focus on the educational offerings instead. Some other minor problems include the world being less immersive and there being no random encounters, which means less practicing overall. Nevertheless, it should serve as another fun and a good source for learning and practicing Katakana.

Lessons are paced well, combat is basically a modified version of flash cards reviewing what you have already learned. Its an effective way to learn the writing system before moving on to more advanced lessons.

With the help of this game I got to learn katakana in a week. I reccommend also checking the Tofugu (Very usegull website) guide to make the information stick for longer. The story, the art, and the overall feel is way better than the previous game, the dialog made me chuckle a couple of times. I don't know if there are any translations, it would be cool to see non english speaking people playing the game. The only problem i got was random screen flashes and frame rate drops very few times... How? It's RPG Maker, but that's nothing because the game is great.

kurzes spaßiges Spiel, ich weiß nicht warum aber von Hiragana zu Katakana (also vom ersten zum zweiten Game hin) hat sich die Tastenumstellung geändert oder wurde entfernt. Von der Story her fand ich ist dieses Game eine deutliche steigerung und es hat mit dem Challange Tower oder so auch replayability.
It's been great so far. I'm still in Osaka mind ya. I've read in the comments and other places that the game sometimes had glitches. I have yet to encounter them. I feel like there may be a bit of romance dating simulator in the game, though that may be just a friends sim. I hope there is. It'd be cool if it also taught some romance terms. So many JRPGs have a bit of romance after all. So it'd be helpful
