Lazaret is an atmospheric first-person horror game. You play as a member of a rescue team called out to investigate a distress signal coming from a ship that disappeared 4 years ago.

Storyline

A rescue team is called out to investigate a distress signal coming from a ship identified as the MTS Endurance - a ship known to have disappeared 4 years ago on a voyage across the Atlantic. The rescue operation goes awry, and you are left stranded and alone on the derelict ship. Searching below deck you find no sign of life. The crew appears to have just vanished; replaced with eerie stone statues, but perhaps you're not as alone as you first thought. Explore the derelict ship to uncover what happened 4 years ago and what fate befell the crew.

Giving it a positive review since there is not a neutral option. The map levels and environment are good. The puzzles do get a bit monotonous but not annoyingly so. Sound design is excellent! And I loved the interactions with [spoiler] ghosts of the crew [/spoiler].

The biggest issues are the enemies and the story. The most common enemies, [spoiler] the calcified [/spoiler], pose no threat after the first jump scare or two. There is no consequences with them and they are more annoying than anything after a while. [spoiler] The spiders [/spoiler] are the only enemy that actually killed me once, but they appear too infrequent to be anything more than a minor concern. [spoiler] Scooba Steve [/spoiler] is just....there. The first encounter is heart racing and an excellent introduction, but after that he's just another obstacle to avoid. They are not badly designed, just not used to their full potential.

The story is disjointed. While parts of it are flushed out well from the notes, how everything ties together is never explained. [spoiler] How does the Fog and the artifact relate to one another? What's the story behind the Hayes, the spiders, Scooba Steve, and the research vessel disappearance? Why do we see only one "weird contraption" built by Hayes when the notes say they are all over the ship? [/spoiler] It's a lot of good pieces but no direct connections and I couldn't find anything flushed out with research outside the game. Seems like two different puzzles where one is nice and put together but the other is just there to check boxes off the horror genre list, and the two don't really connect with one another.

Overall, pretty good. I wouldn't call this a horror, maybe an introductory horror or a thriller. It's a good starter game if you're just getting into the horror genre.
