I would really like to love this game. I am fond of both platformers and classic point and click adventures, but I found myself more frustrated with how the design elements of those games were implemented here more than charmed by the cross-pollination of genres. The platforming controls are abysmal and frustrating more often than not. The adventure game puzzles are well implemented, but the contextual interface is unintuitive and adds frustrations on top.
If the controls were just somewhat more streamlined, such as allowing me to use mouse 1 to click through dialog instead of having it default to "." or having to be keybound to another key that isn't used for anything else, or if some of the interactables like portals defaulted to "use" on a basic key click instead of having to open the context menu and use the mouse to ensure I don't select 'look at' for the umpteenth time, I would have enjoyed the overall experience much more.
There is a lot to enjoy here, but it is mired down in frustrating game-feel and a death by a thousand cuts of minor grievances.
I had a love hate relationship with this game but I did manage to complete it and had a few laughs along the way so I recommend it.
I found some of the puzzles and platforming difficult so I had to sometimes refer to the very good text guide, no shame in that, some of the puzzles were a bit obtuse. In one of the more difficult platforming sections the little character, Dan, was swearing and cursing at the difficulty, very funny since I was doing exactly the same thing. A few tries and I did get through it and I don't consider myself to be a very good platformer.
The game is quite meta and once you understand that you start to understand that some odd things that might look a bit like glitches to you earlier in the game are actually game play elements and used to solve puzzles later, very clever. Who would have thought turning down the in game volume level would help the characters in a noisy environment.
The game was very chatty and texty so although essential to the story and the game it did slow down the gameplay a bit.
In summary an interesting mixup of old school point and click adventure, platforming and edgy meta / break the fourth wall type dialogue. Obviously made with a lot of love and as far as I can tell quite original and well worthwhile while on sale. However not something I would want to play again.
What do I get for buying a game based on the creators' pedigree and my love of their previous games? A buggy disappointment, apparently.
Ignoring the acknowledged-yet-unaddressed issue where you can fall through the ground, I ran into one where the context menu failed to respond, and another where the dialogue window failed mid-conversation and necessitated a restart.
Honestly, the bugs were more entertaining than the gameplay.
The premise is entertaining, but the clunky context menu was very uncomfortable to use on the Steam Deck, leading to sub-par adventuring. They sought to take the piss out of platforming, but this resulted in it being piss poor.
At least the opening logos are funny, and there are plenty of accessibility options.
One of the best indie games I've played. It has a quirky sense of humor, the characters are endearing and full of personality, the interactions between the characters are really cute, the gameplay is very varied and sometimes different than you expect, but it also reminds you of old adventure and point-and-click games. All in all, I love this game, please more! <3
The concept of combining a platformer with a point-and-click adventure definitely sounded good on paper, but Psychonauts basically already did that and did it better without even making it a gimmick. In practice, splitting the platforming and point-and-click halves into two separate characters just serves to make gameplay slower and more awkward, especially given how sluggish Ben is in comparison to Dan. It often feels like he's this albatross around your neck that you're forced to carry because he's the only one who can do the point-and-click stuff you need to advance the game. (And the implication that Ben is actively choosing to make things this difficult doesn't exactly help.)
...Maybe I'd be more willing to forgive that if the writing were better, but I just don't find the series' sense of humor all that funny. In fact, the main duo (especially Ben) come across as so unlikeable that it sapped my will to keep playing (especially given what I know about the ending from TV Tropes). Weirdly, I think this might be the first time I've ever really had that problem, let alone when the characters in question were me.
Also, heads up: Devil's Kiss counts toward your playtime if you're hoping to get a refund.

‘Lair of the Clockwork God’ is a hybrid platforming/point-and-click adventure game with strong writing and great presentation, and a fitting conclusion to the series Ben and Dan started all the way back in 2008.
Gameplay is split between Ben, the point-and-click adventurer, where you collect items, rub them together, chat to wacky characters, and solve puzzles, whereas Dan is the platformer, where you will do the typical running and jumping. Despite this, I would say the game leans more towards the point-and-click side (not surprising given its roots), with the platforming being the weaker of the two halves.
Still I really enjoyed my time with the game and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed comedy games.
A witty and thought provoking game with fun and frustrating platforming. Be prepared to think outside of the box. Writing was really great, a lot of variety. I'm not a huge fan of platforming, but this was very enjoyable for me. If you like a game that involves puzzles, using your brain a lot, and some cheesy comedy mixed in, I think you'll enjoy it.

This game is really, really, REALLY funny and clever. There's some sleeper jokes that hit an hour after their setup.
As well as being very funny, this game features two puzzles that mess with the whole gaming medium in really innovative ways.
The platforming can get frustrating though.
Very clever, very funny, plays beautifully on all the tropes of point&clicks and platformers (and more!) and throws nonstop surprises and curveballs. I admit I struggled a little with the platformer bits, so if you're someone who physically or mentally can't do platform games, maybe this isn't for you--or you can find your own Dan and leave the jumpy parts to them. The artwork is very cool, the puzzles are just on the right edge of making you feel smart without getting frustrated, and the whole game is a unique, hilarious experience. I'll take some more Ben & Dan if they're offering!
I wanted to like it so bad! I loved the first two games.
I disliked the platforming and found it either way too easy or way too difficult.

Hands down, this was the game that brought the biggest smile to my face this year. It was funny, sweet, smart and you can tell that is was made with a lot of heart.
I'll be honest though - the platforming could get a bit frustrating due to somewhat loose controls, and there were moments where I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the puzzle solutions. But these minor hiccups shouldn't stop anyone from experiencing this gem. If you can look past those small issues, you're in for an absolute treat.

I don't think I've ever laughed out loud at a game mechanic before, but that's the kind of game this is. Despite some slightly cumbersome controls for Ben, the Adventure Gamer, the puzzles are inventive and satisfying. The platforming is pretty solid, and has some fun mechanics that don't outstay their welcome. The dialogue is funny, and the story is original. Thoroughly recommended.

Sadly this is a narrow recommend. The game does a lot of neat stuff that's worthy of attention, but its let down by a few things:
- The control scheme never quite gelled for me (I used keyboard + mouse), I got used to it, but it wasn't that fluid switching between characters to do different things. Part of me was just pining for the two character to be merged into one, so you could platform and point & click without switching.
- The ending. I don't want to spoil, but I found it disappointing and damaged a lot of the game for me. I wanted more of a cullmination of all the themes of the game, and it just doesn't give us that.
But there are a lot of positives.
- The puzzle solving can vary and be a bit unintuitive at times, but other times it's super creative and just fun. Good point and click puzzles are a pleasure when you finally realise what you need to do, and this game touches on that a lot, doing truly perverse and crazy and creative stuff. The use of [spoiler]duct tape[/spoiler] was fun for instance.
- British humour and slang. I have not heard the term "John Thomas" in years, and "standing around like a lemon" is a term a British friend I have uses a lot, but don't really hear anywhere else except for this game. It's just nice some of the more understated turns of phrase are used.
- Ocassional pontification. Sometimes the game dive in and discusses some theme or other. As I said above, I felt there could have been more done to build up on the themes, but the discussion they do have can be pretty fun. The [spoiler]Feeling Old[/spoiler] level for example has a couple of good observations mixed in.
I liked playing this game for the most part, and apprecaite it's doing stuff that's different, just sadly not overly enthusiastic about it.

Phew, unlike the Devil's Kiss VN prelude, the actual game doesn't suck.
A hybrid between platforming and point-and-click. Writing is ostensibly British, self-deprecating and wry. The biggest complaint is there is no dialogue skip button - sometimes you hit the wrong key and get stuck with 8 dialogue boxes you didn't want.
Definitely a good callback to the thinking games of old though, I like it.
Overall I will give this a recommend, though I will say the humor in this game is a very specific niche of meta humor, that I don't think will be for everyone. Plus getting used to shifting between the two mechanics will take some time to get used to. These comments aside, there is a really well done game. One section in particular had the most fun puzzles and one of the best meta jokes I've ever experienced. I will say that the game will be more fun if you treat it less as a narrative-driven game, and more like a series of sketch comedies one after another with a throughline. So as said before, it is still a recommend as I had fun playing it.

"Lair of the Clockwork God" is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. It's a Nintendo Switch game that somehow landed on Steam as well. This one is different, though, because half the game play isn't platforming, it's Monkey Island ripoff point and click adventuring. I appreciate the blend of genres is a quirky idea and the writing for the game is kinda fun, so the letdown here is totally on a sloppy, godawful technical implementation and an eye wateringly ridiculous price tag for pixelcrap... look, if developers want to get paid the same money as actual game developers who can do video game graphics properly, they have to actually do video game graphics properly. Pixelcrap is not okay, it's 2024.
So this is a comedy themed point and click adventure platforming hybrid. You solve platforming problems with one character, then switch to the other one to do the point and click adventuring. Like I said, this is "okay", and the game does work, but there's a lot of problems.
One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience.
There's an overwhelming amount of mediocre Visual Novel/E-book style cutscenes in this game. So you'll spend a huge amount of time not playing the game, but clicking through endless lines of poorly written VN text cutscenes because the developers couldn't work out how to relate their narrative through the game mechanics, and decided instead it would be better to compete with reading a book for your time. We're here to play games, not watch hours of garbage intersituals.
On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers.
A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result.
While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
"Lair of the Clockwork God" didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for talking to a Dragon to get his name (a joke), trivial to get, but less than 40 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game.
The game never really caught on with the millions of gamers on Steam, with a very low peak player count close to launch, and then just a handful of players launching this game every couple of days. This is undoubtedly caused by factors such as those raised in this review. It's always helpful with buying decisions to consider how popular and successful the product is, and unfortunately while this did accumulate a few participation trophy reviews, overall, people just aren't using it.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
"Lair of the Clockwork God" has the almost unethical price of $20 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. For comparison, the $20 asking price for this game could get you games like "Metro Exodus", "Dishonored 2" or "Kingdom Come Deliverance". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
It's pretty good. Solid gameplay foundation, silly adventure game logic, and I particularly enjoyed the acidic writing.

Un protagonista spigoloso che può ricordare i personaggi di Judi Burret e un pixel art AZTECA, per un viaggio attraverso platform e puzzle discutibilmente difficili che però sono molto apprezzabili.
La storia tratta il fermare una apocalisse causata da un computer, che tra l'altro mi ricordo proprio il computer di un altro gioco o tipo bimo, e il tutto viene spalmato in modo adeguato.
Bella la transizione tra 2D e 3D fatta in modo non dico nuovo, ma adeguata.
Ho amato questo gioco dall'inizio alla fine, fine tragica e con una canzone finale inaspettata.

Platforms + Stick and click adventure that for me fell flat on both accounts.
It turns out that I do not like mixing action/thinking games at all... Plus lots of the puzzles were absurd, following the comical trope of the game.
Kudos to the devs providing accessibility options for the platformer bits, but after disliking the games writing (too many jokes in my opinion) and suffering a nasty bug involving a droid, I had to refund.
Just watch the trailer and if you find it funny go ahead, why not, but if you do not stay out.

Cette suite des aventures de Ben & Dan (time gentlemen please et Ben there Dan that) est phénoménale! Un jeu qui graphiquement reste du même niveau mais tout le reste a été amélioré avec une partie plateformes incarnée par Dan hilarante. Je m'attendais à un petit jeu délirant comme les précédents mais là les concepteurs ont mis le paquet. Si souvent on est perdu dans les actions à mener, le gameplay est rattrapé par un rythme et un humour sans faille avec beaucoup de références à des jeux mythiques comme les meilleurs Lucasarts. Un voyage dans le coeur d'un ordinateur où tout est mené de main de maître du début à la fin avec une bonne durée de jeu entre 15-20h, c'est plus que la moyenne. Un jeu culte sur PC mais aussi adapté sur console Nintendo! 18/20

I'm a big fan of Time Gentlemen, Please and Ben There, Dan That. Weirdly, they are some of the first point and click games I played. I missed Lair of the Clockwork God releasing entirely. Years later I stumbled into it and...it's different. Why is it a weird platformer? Why is the art style different? This isn't what I wanted. I purchased it anyway and a few months later I finally played it.
This is probably my favorite of the series.
The idea here is Dan wants to be platformer now. Ben wants to be a point and click still. They have to work in tandem to complete levels and ultimately prevent the apocalypses (all of them). It's how these two gameplay styles work in tandem that makes it great. It isn't even two different styles. Both of them together make a whole. This design encompasses how they make puzzles, jokes, story, and exploration.
If you've been sleeping on this game because it looks different, you have nothing to worry about. You are going to have a good time. A couple moments blew my mind with how clever they were.
Oh, and Devil's Kiss is required. You can play it before the start. Just keep it installed just in case you want to experience the story again for any reason.
I recently beat Lair of the Clockwork God and thought it was a fantastic little indie game. You play as Dan and Ben, one of whom interacts with the world in a 90s adventure game style and the other who is purely a run-and-jump splatformer. You work your way through the world alternating between using the two’s complimentary skill sets in an attempt to stop…all the apocalypses!(?)
I think just describing it undersells it though. A lot of the dialog is actually quite funny — though definitely M for Mature at times — and the game marries its mechanics with its themes very well. One thing I think it does well is that each of the characters personalities and ethos are shaped by their gameplay abilities, and as those intersect with the broader themes the game is presenting it results in a really interesting marriage between the storytelling and the mechanics.
It also isn’t afraid to subvert your expectations at times. It’s opinionated, and I won’t say that I agree with 100% of what was said, but in the end I think it was a great experience and kudos to the devs for pulling the whole thing off. Recommended.

Senza fare spoilers sulla storia, il gioco ci permetterà di utilizzare quasi simultaneamente due personalli, Ben e Dan. Con Ben possiamo sfruttare le dinamiche classiche di un punta e clicca, quindi osservare, parlare, raccogliere oggetti, utilizzare oggetti e combinare oggetti, mentre con Dan possiamo sfruttare le dinamiche classiche da platformer e sbloccare vari upgrade. La narrazione della storia è ricca di battute oggettivamente divertenti e di "meta-battute" che trascendono la barriera del gioco stesso.

Il gioco mi è piaciuto davvero tanto, sia per la storia colma di umorismo che per l'eccellente dinamica di gioco innovativa che è stata implementata magnificamente allinterno del gioco. La combinazione dei generi platform e punta e clicca è risultata una scelta interessante e vincente, che mi ha appasionato fino alla fine del gioco. Consiglio questo gioco a tutti.
Il ritorno in grande stile di Ben e Dan (Time Gentlemen, Please! and Ben There, Dan That!) lo stesso stile, le battute ignoranti e l'aggiunta di diverse scene platform rendono lair of the clockwork god quasi un acquisto obbligato per chi ha giocato e apprezzato i precedenti, le parti platform sono tante ma ben bilanciate e dalle opzioni si possono rendere più semplici. Merita di essere giocato nella sua interezza, vi ritroverete a ridere davanti allo schermo più di una volta ma ci sono anche momenti tristi che portano la narrazione a un livello più profondo rispetto ai titoli precedenti, tutto condito con momenti irriverenti e dissacranti.
I enjoyed this quite a bit, though I do tend to agree with the "I don't like platform games" reviewers that if you don't like platform games you won't like it, and for me some of the point-and-click adventure aspects were frustrating, but classic (combine wrench with mop-head, a fine callback to classic point-and-clicks where when you get stuck you just try combining everything with everything until eventually something works *then* you see the clue for it).
The other point-and-click frustration, other than the occasional nonsense combo, came towards the end when I had no idea where to go because I hadn't noticed one interactable thing that looked like background. Because the platform guy is so much faster, I pretty much didn't walk the other guy anywhere (once not doing that becomes an option) except when something *looked* interactable, and things only get an indication that they're interactable when that guy walks by them.
But the game more than makes up for that in fun sections and variety. It's a bit unfortunate that the different genre sections are extremely linear, a little bit of actual gameplay in them would have been nice. And I would have quite enjoyed the puzzle that the characters don't want to solve - I was going to do it anyway but then I noticed there was a duplicate tile so it's not actually possible.

It was a great game until out of nowhere I opened the game and it wouldn't let me run and jump to the left, I've done all the troubleshooting I can but nothing helps. I'm sure you might enjoy the game because the amount of story I got to see is great and the style of game is super fun but unfortunately if this glitch is there still you won't be able to continue past an early stage.

Picture this: You've died and gone to heaven. Except instead of heaven, it's the office of platformer reassignment. Where you get the deadly spikes removed from you, your paperwork filled out to figure out where your last checkpoint was, and you talk to other platform game characters like a girl with a paintbrush who changes powers and colours depending on her emotional state.
Now imagine instead of a platform game character, you're a stubborn adventure game protagonist trying to scam your way through customs so that you can respawn at the final checkpoint instead of doing any platforming. So you steal an item from one of those platform game characters, kill and shower in the goo of a sentient blob, and turn yourself blue by making the painter girl sad and touching her magic paintbrush.
Lair of the Clockwork God is the kind of game that's constantly willing to come up with creative new skits and angles for their jokes. With a sense of constant humour that mixes parody, satire, and comedic sociopathy, I couldn't put the game down as I was basically always interested in seeing what the next location joke, or gameplay mechanic would be. There's nothing quite like it, in terms of style or substance.
The incredibly tedious tutorial makes it clear that platforming and point and clicks don't mix well, specially with 2 controllable characters. Anyway, I plodded through because I had a fond memory of the original games.
Ben is far too slow, full bladder or not, and Dan's platforming challenges range from boring to annoying, specially when side gravity is involved. The controls for the point and click seem to be fitted for a controller. You won't catch me playing an adventure game with a controller, so I rewired some baffling hotkey choices and had to put up with the rest.
It wasn't until the game made me replay the tutorial again, right before the end, that I gave up on it and went to youtube to watch someone else finish it instead.
I don't think platforming brought anything good to the table. It didn't make the game more fun and it didn't make it funnier. At least I had some laughs with the adventure parts, which is all I really wanted the game to be.
Despite disliking platformers, I thought this game was solid. Good puzzles, humor, and a story that's interesting enough to hold you over through the end. It's nothing ground-breaking, but the adventure and puzzle-solving aspects made the taste of platformer a little more palatable.
I played this on Steam Deck and encountered a few frustrations, but I'm not sure whether these were exclusive to the Deck or not. First, the game locked up in some animations and wouldn't continue — the game wasn't [i]frozen[/i] as I could still access the menu, but the animation would never end which forced me to quit and restart. Second, there's a puzzle which requires keyboard input which isn't exactly difficult to access but it was frustrating having to type on the Deck's input system instead of being provided an in-game keyboard solution.
Regardless, I found myself liking the game more than I expected. Even with a few technical problems and challenges where I found myself saying, "I hate platformers," Lair of the Clockwork God was enjoyable and worth a playthrough.

Really enjoyable game that blends platforming and adventure games into a smooth mixture. It's got the sense to avoid the irritations of point and click games, with Ben gaining ways to move around quickly to compensate for his plodding walk compared to Dan's dash. None of the puzzles are horribly obtuse, and trying stuff out/examining things will often provide a subtle hint to push you in the right direction.
Worth your time if you enjoy adventure games, but also want a little platformer gameplay to help break up those puzzles.
Fun game, clever puzzles. A few major and horrific bugs (including one that is actually a game mechanic which gets turned off later in-game). Hilarious. Lots of indie dev meta humor. Just finished it and am going to buy the prequels immediately.
I bought this as a point & click fan, because I loved the first two Ben & Dan games, but I would say that the platforming is above-average in difficulty, and way too frustrating after I die 30 times in the same spot. I thought I would like it as an adventure gamer, but it's basically unplayable without really good reflexes and platforming habits. It feels like 85% platformer, which isn't how it's marketed, and left me feeling really disappointed.
It's a platformer/point n click hybrid that's self-aware and takes cracks at game design culture, the state of gaming today and a little bit of everything else in the process. Lots of hilarity, clever moments and ridiculous shenanigans. Getting a flow with the controls can take a little getting used to (looking at you point n click). Highly recommend to anyone who likes any combination of the words I just wrote.

The game is buggy, kinda janky, with poor mechanics and poor level / game design. Most of the puzzle is far fetched and I did not enjoy the five hours I spent in it. It does a terrible job as a platformer and a bad job as a point and click (the whole gimmick is that you control two characters, one platformer and one from a point and click, each with their playstyle)

This is very good! Lovingly made, funny, clever, tells a fun story, explores the human condition, and is really quite pretty.
It's both point-and-click adventure and platformer, which works remarkably well — and has an accessibility slider to make the platforming easier for those not keen on double-jumping at no penalty. There's also an excellent official hint guide for nudging you in helpful directions for if you get stuck.

The balance between point and click and platformer is heavily towards platformer, if you want point and click go for something else. I am not a huge fan of platformers so I am biased a little here, but I couldn't play it.

This game just... loves being meta, in a lot of ways, and never taking itself too seriously. This leads to some fun jokes and some very frustrating puzzles, since the game doesnt like... fully guide you on what you need to do as a meta move, if that makes sense
I don't know. I liked this game well enough, the story and dialogue are entertaining, and its not something you'll see somewhere else thats for sure, so I do reccommend it. But the platforming doesnt feel good, and for the puzzles I definetly reccommend playing with a guide open in another window for the inevitable post-moon logic. So yeah, expect an interesting experience, if not a wholly fun game.

I expected the game to have both elements of Point and Click stuff and some degree of platforming that would make since in a constructed world sense. At the start they acknowledge their world is inside a game but by the end the meta humor is thrown to the curb for a shock ending like Battleblock Theater. The Twist concept that they started the whole situation and doomed their world is stupid. It would have been more fun if the duo had worked with the Machine and stopped each Apocalypse from happening by going back in points in time and either causing something that cancels it out from happening, delaying it from happening for an extended number of dacades, or outright through weird shenanigans to happen on another world entirely.
I'm not a big gamer but I found this fun and interesting. The puzzles were mostly solvable on my own (I used the walkthrough a few times) and, while it could be frustrating, the platform aspects were all achievable even if some took me a lot of tries. It's funny and endearing. I know enough about games to understand most of the references it makes. I haven't quite finished it yet but I'm excited to get to the end even while enjoying it enough to hope it won't end too soon.

Writing a negative review often feels like a pointless exercise, but for a two-and-a-half-year-old niche indie title that has received mostly positive reviews, it feels almost [i]petty.[/i] I can't imagine it'll make a difference in anybody's purchasing decision, and it feels a little late to be offering constructive criticism. But I've been thinking about this game ever since I finished it a month or two ago, and I'm trying to nail down exactly [i]why.[/i]
I think it's about The Swindle.
The Swindle is another game by the same developer. It's a Roguelite Stealth Platformer. It's novel, it's entertaining, and it got a score of [i]62%.[/i] The Swindle is [i]not[/i] a 62% game. It's a 79% game with some jank that could be ironed out to bring it up to an 86%. This game, meanwhile, is not a 94%. It's a 73% riding mainly on a small dedicated fanbase. Something is wrong, and I'm racking my brains trying to figure out what has happened here, and [i]why.[/i]
I understand this is preposterous. I understand my subjective views are of no real merit. I fully entertain the possibility that I am just a weird guy who likes certain kinds of genres and that The Swindle is made for me and LotCG's humour just doesn't land with my specific psyche. But [i]none of those answers are satisfying to me.[/i] I feel like I'm [i]missing something.[/i]
There's this part of LotCG that involves thematically frustrating platforming. As in, the theme is that the platforming is meant to be frustrating. In actuality, the platforming was not frustrating, which I assume is by design. The thing is, that brief section was the single most enjoyable experience I had in the game. I don't know how big SFG is, or how the labor is distributed, but I'm starting to suspect they may be good designers, but bad writers.
I believe, genuinely, that videogames are a terrible narrative medium. I think a good narrative requires author control, and a good game requires player control, and that these two factors are at direct odds with each other. I realize this is not a popular opinion, especially amongst game designers with a narrative background. I wish LotCG had changed my mind on this. It didn't.
I kind of want to go over the rest of SFG's catalogue just to see if my suspicions about their areas of competence hold true. I also hope that their next game leans heavily on gameplay and less on writing. So if you're from SFG, and you're reading this review as part of some masochistic self-debasement ritual, if you could maybe devote the next several years of your life to addressing the barely-substantiated criticisms of a random lunatic in your review section, you'd be doing me a real solid.
Hilarious and very well designed hybrid between a platformer and point & click game, and much more than another puzzle-platformer. There are two guys to play with: Dan loves platforming but hates solving puzzles, while Ben loves puzzles but even refuses to jump. Yet they have to work together to reach the end of each level in many creative ways. Each level in the game feels unique and there are plenty of clever ideas and funny situations. In fact this is one of the most funny games I've ever played! :)
Be warned though: the game is rather difficult, both the platforming and solving some of the puzzles. The devs really like trolling the player so you'll need to think out of the box from time to time. Strongly recommended!

Not only is this game hilarious, but many of the puzzles have solutions that subvert tropes and expectations in the most wonderful ways.
A buddy adventure game where one character wants to be in a platformer game and the other wants to be in a point and click character, and they use the different mechanics of their genres in tandem to progress. Clever idea but the mechanics are very basic, the humor is overwhelmingly dated references to other indie games, and there's occasional weird bugs like my character getting stuck in the floor.
Un juego muy redondo y a la vez muy original por saber mezclar de manera magistral las mecánicas de un juego de plataformas con las mecánicas propias de las aventuras gráficas point and click. Muy divertido y muy disfrutable a la hora de jugarlo.
Con un personaje avanzas plataformeando con las habilidades típicas de salto, doble salto, salto pared y disparo. Mientras con el otro investigas los escenarios, recoges objetos, los combinas, hablas con personajes, resuelves puzles e interactúas con elementos del nivel e incluso creas items para mejorar las habilidades de tu compañero plataformero. Parece difícil que una combinación así funcione, pero una vez lo juegas te cuesta imaginar el juego sin que la combinación de géneros exista porque funciona a la perfección.
Añadir además, que tiene el humor marca de la casa. Un poco cafre, irreverente y a la vez inteligente, siendo además, un juego muy consciente de que es un juego y es muy metareferencial a la hora de tratar el tema de ser un juego, las críticas a las microtransacciones y otros técnicas modernas que se usan a la hora de desarrollar los juegos actualmente, además de reirse de otras muchas cosas típicas que aparecen en los juegos. [spoiler] Ojo a las notas del parche, que parece que no, pero cuando te lo acabas te das cuenta de que está todo pensado y también a los logos que aparecen antes de arrancar el juego -dejadlos pasar todos ;). Y de la tienda, mejor no digo nada, pero muy bueno todo lo que hay alrededor de ella [/spoiler]
En cuanto al guion. Al igual que los anteriores, la historia de fondo es bastante surrealista, como es detener TODOS LOS APOCALISIS(ES) QUE ESTÁN OCURRIENDO A LA VEZ, [spoiler] aunque luego el avance por los niveles vayan por otro camino, pero es lo que hay que hacer parar paralos ;) [/spoiler]. Sin embargo, a pesar del humor que destila, se permite hablar de manera algo más profunda de temas más serios, sin que por ello el tono general del juego decaiga.
En general un juego que por mecánicas, narrativa y su humor creo que hay que jugar.

This game is rather good. I debated writing a haiku to describe my feelings about it.
But I suck at poetry.
Then I decided, mmm....I could write some lyrics in a sort of sing-a-long game review to let's say....the tune of Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. I mean, I've got rhythm. Could knock that out in short form.
But that song has a lot of finger snapping and I've got carpal tunnel and all. So, scrap that.
Next I toyed with the idea of writing a lengthy almost article looking review about the variety of game mechanics, wit, and finely tuned pacing. That would be nice. I could carry on about the juxtaposition of two opposing game styles coexisting in a seesaw of platforming and adventure game genres.
But not many folks read long reviews anymore. TLDR you know. Life is short, make it quick and get on with it.
So, I would like to say this:
Buy this game and be happy. It is very very clever. The jokes don't make you want to roll your eyes, and the platforming is surprisingly fun. The adventure gaming parts make you do things you would never dream of doing too. Probably the best indie game I've played in a few years.
The Steam Deck is really good for platformers. The Steam Deck is really good for point & click games. This game seems tailor-made for the Steam Deck, and it works very well, and is lots of fun.

I usually don't feel the need to join the chorus of praise for a game when it is already at Overwhelmingly Positive, but for Lair of the Clockwork God, I'll make an exception. I had a great time with this game, the combination of platforming and old school adventure games was a lot of fun, and to top it all off, this game has a great sense of humor as well, which led to me really enjoying this game.
I personally think that one's attitude towards this game depends mainly on three factors: 1) Do you like point & click? 2) Do you like platforming? 3) Do you like the Deadpool movies (mainly for their humor)? If the answer to all three questions is "yes!", this might be your new personal favorite. Extra points of you have played the previous games and/or are an aspiring (indie) game developer.
I wanted to try the game because it was praised over the top on certain internet platforms. While I love platformers, I am no fan of point & click. Because people claimed that adding platforming to point & click was kind of the next evolution of the genre, I was personally hoping that one would make the other one more appealing to me. It did not. I encountered a few bugs in the first 30 minutes while platforming (e.g. I fell through the ground and died), found the 4th wall breaking tiring, because it was too frequent (also I am no fan of 'funny' takes on cancer), and I found the art style not detailed enough to fall in love with the world. So that's why I can't recommend the game.
If you, however, are a fan of the genres and the humor, why not give it a try when it is on sale.
This was great clever fun. I enjoyed every minute.
