SO silly, its such a blast to play because I never know whats going to happen. the soundtrack is also so lovely
chil
canim arkadasim ardata
The dialogs are smart, sometimes a bit cringe, but always funny. There are several routes to follow with unpredictable outcomes. And I mean really unpredictable.
It's entertaining, but I don't think it's for everyone.
do i recommend? yes. do i recommend just following a guide and skipping all dialogue you find cringe? also yes. but if you're fine with it all, then don't skip. some parts were just... ugh. anyways time for pesterquest
The writing is good, the art is pretty, and the soundtrack is great.
But the game does feel very cheap in some places, like text going outside of the box, the game crashing when you open the history in some volumes, the game breaking the forth wall a bit too much near the end, and Elwurd's sprite being in a different art style to the rest.
I still had a lot of fun playing it and learning more about Hiveswap Act 2's trolls!
VERY GOOD
ive been a fan of homestuck since i was in middle school and got back into it earlier this year. i had never played through friendsim in full bc i was a 13 year old with no money when this first came out, so i wanted to give it all a go.
some routes are really good and engaging, but i could count them all on one hand. a lot of the characters have bad endings that are so annoyingly easy to get by accident that it feels like a really bad bait and switch in terms of writing, and they do that a lot. like, a lot a lot.
the art direction is messy and chaotic and they really shouldve had maybe two different artists at most instead of paying like 5 people to do wildly different things on a budget that must have already been tight. this is especially apparent when two characters from different routes are standing next to each other and the juxtaposition just doesn't look nice at all. this is abstaining from commenting too much on the UI constantly breaking in later routes because the text box has a set size.
i would maybe be able to appreciate the troll lore they put forward in this more if it wasnt blithely apparent that the writers just wanted alternia to be "grey earth with a little more violence". even then, that idea doesnt work because aside from all the wanton murder, life here is weirdly contrasted compared to modern earth. its easy to find medical devices that punch your bones back in place as long as youve got a rich buddy and coffee shops hold cross-caste girl power slam poetry events or whatever.
it was really frustrating to get through. it starts to pull itself together in terms of writing towards the final routes and it has some really interesting metanarrative twists, but if you dont like meandering stories that are constantly trying to jebait you, id just go play pesterquest and swallow the fact that youre missing some context for karkat's route. because at least when pesterquest jebaits you, its actually funny.
nihkee moolah was the greatest hiveswap character ever made. playing that route made me start lifting weights and jogging on the treadmill again. thank you nihkee.
I wish they ironed out typos like "perigree" and "fuschia", and some minor art problems, as well as some of the UI like the text going over the box's border or sometimes requiring awkward-looking font size changes. Or the music cutting out if you go to Friend Select and then back to menu. These make the game feel rough, but that aside, it was a pretty fun romp! Whether interactions took a turn for the BIZARRE, the UNCOMFORTABLE, or the HEARTFELT, I was fully invested, and it was nice seeing what I thought would be a short and silly game turn into something a little more substantial the deeper I went.
Each interaction helped expand Alternia in wonderful ways. The characters are very weird and endearing. I laughed a lot. Made me appreciate what a special friend group the Homestuck trolls had, and what a unique ruler Feferi was. The writing felt in line with the dark humor of MSPA. Actually edgier! The little musical, visual, and textual callbacks to the comics were super neat. I'm looking forward to meeting these guys again in Act 2 and seeing how things lead up to the Alternia from Homestuck, with caste tensions seemingly more lowkey and the drones less active. Onto Pesterquest!
Friendsim is a can of worms of verriable quality. If you dont like vns then just skip it and do hiveswap act 2, if you like vns then ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this is the game for you. It has more content in it than the game that follows it and is so peak tbh
very fun zebruh my goat
I liked the funny trolls and the meta ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Karako Pierot is my BABY BOY, PRECIOUS CHILD. 9/10
♥♥♥♥ yes, Friendship.
Marvus my beloved
Everyone knows zebruh is the best one in the whole game!
The writing of this game is excellent. The backgrounds and art are beautiful. The makers of this game cared about it and wanted to give their players something fun. If you're into Hiveswap, please play this game. Though the recommendation is to play it after Hiveswap Act 2.
its pretty good
Chahut is really hot
pretty fun honestly. characters were charming cant wait to play hiveswap. music was nice and the game was funny sometimes. felt a bit like quantity over quality sometimes with the amount of routes but idk i still enjoyed it
Don't waste your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ time dude the entire game and why I played it for 30 hours is best described as a car crash so horrific you can't look away
good game
《Hiveswap Friendsim - Volume Twelve》
What Is It? An Emotional Adventure of "Friendship Simulation"
Hiveswap Friendsim - Volume Twelve is the twelfth installment in the acclaimed independent game series, part of the Hiveswap universe created by American author and artist Andrew Hussie. It is an episodic visual novel that blends role-playing, social simulation, and multiple outcome mechanics . In this series, you play as an unnamed protagonist (often considered the MSPA Reader) who has crash-landed on the dangerous alien planet Alternia and is desperate to forge friendships with its troll inhabitants . Volume Twelve continues the "friend-finding escapades" of the MSPA Reader .
The game is described as a "quick, loosely-canonical visual novel adventure" set during the time of Hiveswap: Act 1 and featuring characters from the Hiveswap universe . Unlike traditional dating sims, the focus is on forming platonic friendships, with the developer describing it as a riff on the genre where "instead of trying to date a character, you just try to befriend them, and in the process, you get to know them better, and ridiculous things happen along the way" .
Core Gameplay: More Than Just Choices, It's About "Empathy"
Don't be fooled by its visual novel format—this is a psychological engagement centered on trust, social dynamics, and self-identity. The core mechanic revolves around making choices in dialogues and interactions that influence your relationship with the characters you encounter . Volume Twelve, like other volumes, focuses on two specific trolls from the Troll Call—Galekh Xigisi and Tirona Kasund . Your decisions shape the narrative and the outcome of your attempt to befriend them.
Each volume, including Volume Twelve, offers a self-contained story centered on building a relationship with specific trolls. The choices you make determine the success or failure of your friendly overtures . The game is noted for its darkly comedic tone and is set in various locations on Alternia, from gritty underground clubs to stately mansions .
The series is designed with high replayability due to the branching paths and choices that lead to different outcomes . Volume Twelve's specific content includes varying levels of violence and suggestive themes, depending on the character route taken .
Who Is It For? Ask Yourself These Questions
If you identify with any of the following, Hiveswap Friendsim - Volume Twelve (and the series as a whole) might be perfect for you:
✅ Fans of Narrative-Rich Games: If you enjoy visual novels or story-driven games like Hiveswap or the webcomic Homestuck, this is a direct expansion of that universe .
✅ Players Who Enjoy "Social Simulation" and Character-Driven Stories: The game is ideal for those interested in "character growth" and the evolution of interpersonal relationships through choice-based gameplay .
✅ Those Seeking a "Non-Combat" Experience: The focus is entirely on social interaction and narrative consequences, offering a different kind of satisfaction from combat-oriented games.
However, a word of caution:
❌ Not for Action Seekers: If you prefer fast-paced action or intense combat, you might find the gameplay节奏 (pace) slower, as it is centered on reading and making decisions .
❌ Text-Heavy Gameplay: Progressing the story requires reading a substantial amount of text, which may not suit players looking for a quick, casual experience .
❌ Deals with Mature Themes: The game has a Mature 17+ rating for a reason. It can contain "violence, blood and gore, and strong language," and its stories often explore complex social and personal issues that may resonate deeply or cause discomfort for some players. It's advisable to check content warnings .
Purchasing Advice and Recommendations
Hiveswap Friendsim - Volume Twelve is available as downloadable content (DLC) and requires the base game, Hiveswap Friendsim, to play . The base game includes all 18 volumes of the series .
A highly recommended option is to purchase the Pestersim bundle on Steam, which includes both Hiveswap Friendsim (all 18 volumes) and its sequel, Pesterquest (14 volumes), offering the complete "MSPA Reader Saga" at a significantly discounted price compared to buying them separately . This bundle goes on sale frequently, providing excellent value .
The game is available on PC (via Steam), macOS, Linux, and Nintendo Switch . Its system requirements are very modest, making it accessible for most computers .
Why It's Worth Playing
The game's strength lies not in "beating" it, but in the experience of making choices and seeing how they impact the narrative. It fosters a unique sense of empathy by asking, "If I were in this situation, what would I do?" This level of immersion and character-driven storytelling is a treasured aspect of many modern independent games .
*
A Final Tip: For the best experience, consider playing the Friendsim volumes in order, as events from specific routes are sometimes referenced in later volumes, enriching the overall narrative .
To my surprise I jived with this plenty! I think the first batch of trolls in the introductory volume, while not the strongest start, help get the structure of this friendsim down effectively. The fault with this sort of format is that since each volume contains two new trolls, characters don't have too much room to develop (but some guest appearances do happen which were quite welcome). Despite that, it was quite a thrill and the epilogue served nicely as a bittersweet end.
absolutely fire, lanque is my favorite hes great
i love friendsim so much elwurd is LITERALLY ME but zebruh pmo
I don't follow the Homestuck universe, so I'm new to all this.
It's hilarious without being stupid, turning a dating sim into a chaotic adventure in a crazy world. Mindless fun.
god i wish homestuck wasn't real
its a fun game, lot of death but that would be the homestuck universe for ya
good
homestuck, me like
Fingers crossed this $0.00 investment pays off
Really good visual novel set in Alternia :)
very silly critters. except that zebruh guy i hope he gets thrown off a cliff
fifteen out of fourty endings complete, i like folykl :)
good for extra troll lore, some interactions are cute
A fun way to learn more about trolls and Alternia, with some heartfelt stuff and some typical crazy stuff.
friendzoning alien baddies goes hard imo
Troppo testo e troppo poche scelte.
i read through this game with friends during a period when i started having serious suicidal thoughts, and it helped me get through that and helped me get together with my friends more often. i share a lot of good memories with it.
Hiveswap Friendsim is overall a good time! The earlier routes are a little hit or miss for me, but the vn really hits its stride around volume 6 when previous characters start showing up in new one's routes. It's overall very charming and a great chance to see more of what Alternia is like.
You could find something on wattpad or ao3 for about the same quality the only difference would be that the ao3/wattpad author would atleast care about what they are writing
hot clowns
I want all the friends. I started playing this game when the chapters were just coming out individually and I found such value in it even then that I was willing to pay for each one as they came out. I am glad that they eventually put it all together though. I love the storylines. It's a great inner look at the world.
the author's barely-disguised fetish: video game edition
i also think it's pretty cute that tagora's lusus is a ferret.
This game is hilarious and perfect if you like Homestuck and also Hiveswap, it really helps flesh out the world and and trolls as you get to see kinda what their lives in the blood cast system was like before the meteor.

Alternia
boredswap boredsim
It was really fun when it was first coming out in like- what? 2019? I'd still recommend it but be aware that the development on the adjoining game Hiveswap is extremely slow.
I don't know very much about Homestuck but this is so far really entertaining. Edit: I have played some more and I now know a little bit about Homestuck! I think! Would recommend. Some of the scenarios are better written than other ones, for sure.
A very funny and well-written visual novel that introduces you to the world of Alternia from Homestuck. Makes for a pretty good entry point into Homestuck imo. The music by James Roach, Toby Fox, and others from the Homestuck Music Team is all fantastic, and while there are some routes that aren't as great as others, the majority are really good.
I own this game both on Steam and on the Switch because it's just that awesome.
I'm a late fan to the Homestuck universe, with Friendsim being my first introduction. Or more specifically, Marvus' route, courtesy of my friend who convinced me to watch it.
It's a fun, silly, and downright bizarre "dating sim" that doesn't really include much dating. The characters are amusing, the art is quirky, and the storyline is neat.
It's well worth the buy, and even if one isn't familiar with the original Homestuck comics, it's easy enough to understand on its own.
Hiveswap Friendsim is a delightfully unhinged visual novel set in the deeply dysfunctional alien world of Alternia — a place where making friends can be hazardous to your health, but you'll die trying anyway (and probably more than once). It's part love letter to Homestuck fans, part initiation ritual for newcomers, and part "What if Tinder, but everyone was a murder clown or potentially Shia LaBeouf?". While it can be disorienting at first if you're unfamiliar with Homestuck, the game cleverly uses its episodic format to gradually build its world.
Each of the 18 volumes introduces new trolls who each offer unique perspectives on Alternian society, culture, and its many bizarre norms. It's part world-building, part character study, and part cosmic comedy. The writing swings from laugh-out-loud absurd to unexpectedly touching, with a wide cast of memorable characters and a few narrative misfires across its many chapters. The quality varies depending on the writer, but even the weaker installments bring something to the table.
The friend-making mechanic — complete with branching paths and both good and bad endings — adds replay value and emotional stakes to what could otherwise be a static experience. The music is excellent, complementing the tone of each story, and the game is laced with the same chaotic, fourth-wall-breaking energy that defines Homestuck.
Packed with chaotic humour, weirdly profound moments, and just enough heart to make you forget you're befriending horny people with grey skin and homicidal tendencies, Friendsim is both a prequel to Hiveswap: Act 2 and a standalone mess of joy, tragedy, and troll-induced trauma.
Also, it's literally on offer right now, best point in time to get it.
Hehehehehe I love hiveswap. In all honestly this is a very well made game with wonderful sprite art and storylines.
tyzias entykk
If you're a fan of Homestuck, then go for it. If you're not a Homestuck fan, it will be confusing but it's designed to introduce you to the alien planet of Alternia and catches you up to the biological and societal mechanics within its world.
I played through this multiple times when it first came out, waiting for each volume every two weeks and doing multiple playthroughs with friends.
The music is wonderful, the writing is hilarious, the characters are all memorable in their own ways. There are very few misses when it comes to the volumes but they're all appealing in different ways. The alien circus comedy we call Homestuck continues to be a delight through these visual novels.
World-building is incremental in each volume. Each character introduces something new about Alternia to the player character, and every now and then something new for the reader as well. It gives me hope for Homestuck as a franchise that future now that Hussie is no longer in the picture.

I think Friendsim is easily the most mixed bag games I ever played, although that is quite literally by design. This game features 18 volumes covering 36 chapters (38 trolls) with 10 different writers, and the quality between some of these were like night and day.
The context of Friendsim itself is that it serves as a setup for Hiveswap Act 2 as most of these characters find their way into that game. It's probably best to read this before diving into Act 2. Each chapter introduces a troll that the reader tries to befriend, with good and bad endings that will either build their character or try to get a laugh. Big emphasis on try.
Yeah to get to the point of why I don't recommend Friendsim is because I only outright enjoyed about 16 of the 36 chapters, which is a pretty bad ratio. Many chapters had multiple routes that felt underwhelming and didn't have the best of writing. There were a few that were outright terrible, but my main issue is the amount of chapters that just went nowhere by the end of it.
I only lightly recommend against Friendsim, however, as I did state I enjoyed quite a few chapters. There were a lot of moments that humor landed really well, the trolls were well written and i got actually invested in the outcome. I initially was leaning towards a positive recommendation because these stuck out in my mind, but seeing the full list of trolls just reminds me how underwhelmed I was for a bulk of the time.
I won't state what chapters I felt were worth reading as some of these build off of previous chapters. Only reading some of these will miss context, you gotta do the whole thing. I recommend getting Friendsim on sale or just watching a playthrough, it doesn't really make a difference as this is just a visual novel that was probably rushed.
Absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with uninteresting characters, butchering what homestuck was once about
Hiveswap was a really fun friend simulator. I enjoyed getting to experience the correct way to make friends inside this alien world and definitely would have liked to have Steam achievements available along side the in-game ones. (:
Good story lines, mostly, and some were super confusing and took me a few times to get right due to so many options! I still recommend this to anyone if you want to figure out how to make friends. ;D
You can see some of my playthrough here: https://youtu.be/GIhhBsFWFYM
翻訳中はゲーム画面上部に「Clipboard voicing enabled, Press 'shift+C' to disable.」 Press 'shift+C' to disable.")
I've been a Homestuck and Hiveswap fan for about 5 years now, first saw this game as an early teen, now about to hit 18 and replaying this game fully w/ a close friend and Man. Man this game is good. Lots of laughs and funny moments, but also made me think about my fav characters a lot again LOOOL , love the hell out of this game and its' characters. Charming and jawdropping read , for sure :] .
it's peak
Nothing makes any kind of sense here but at least I'm (mostly) having fun.
I fail to see how this could be if any interest to anyone, even a fan of whatever this is based on - if it has any fans. I also find it hard to believe that anyone would have the audacity to ask for money in exchange for this.
its so booooooooorin g I dibt care.
It's ight
Friendship sim
it's really fun being able to observe the lives of the trolls on alternia outside of all the sburb/sgrub stuff. i imagine this game would be an...interesting experience for someone who hasn't read the webcomic, though i'd still recommend it either way. as someone who somehow managed to read through all 8129 pages of homestuck in the past i think this would be a great way to pique one's interest in the actual comic especially since the start might be kind of boring
amazing visual novel. bit sad that there's no romance, but some scenes can be interpreted as such if you think really, really hard.
yes very good yes spent too long on it but good yes enjoyed
i swer i ddint snif the armpit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
i love friendsim so much <3
chahut my beloved
so i guess this game is basically trolling fans and this is disgusting. awful. too bad it's too late for a refund
If you like homestuck and big reading sessions, you're ruined, this is the right game for you. A developed social/simgame to make you feel the internal pain of social shame. I feel like some of these routes were rushed, Honestly, in some parts I was unaware of the quality of Hussie's writing, it disappointed me a little. Besides this, it's funny and not the "generic datin sim" kind. It's really interesting to learn more about characters you like while interacting with them, in fact, theres one thing that disappointed me was Marvus' route, I feel like this specific character was made just for weird simps. The premise is simple, the ost is interesting and the characters are ok, maybe some characters had more potential to be used since they came from a Hussie work.
I recommend it if you like homosexual aliens and have a poor sense of humor.
J'aime bien la fermiére =w=
i want chahut
Guys, can we all simultaneously agree that Zebruh,Lanque,Ardata and Tagora deserve what happened to Guts in Berserk times ten?
Also Skylla is my wife i love you Skylla (And Chixie and Bronya and Polypa and Elwurd and Konyyl and Chahut and Lynera and Nihkee HOLY BONES THERES SO MANY WIFE MATERIAL TROLLS)
