I'm not sure what the intended audience is for this game. It's much too difficult for casual players, not to mention complex. For hardcore players, it's much too bland. I consider myself to be somewhere in between these audiences, and didn't get a lot out of it, either.

About the difficulty and complexity: there are four weapons, each sharing the same energy bar, and the basic cannon has a separate cooldown. Additionally, there's two movement controls, one for changing direction (that's right, this [i]isn't[/i] a twin-stick shooter!) and the other for dashing, which also has a cooldown. The frantic battles mean that it can be easy to get various controls mixed up. There are also no ways to upgrade weapons, either within a level or overall, or gain extra hit points and/or lives. You get what you get, and that's energy refills, the rare hit point refill, and that's it. There are checkpoints during each stage, but if you run out of lives (you get a total of three, each with three hit points), then you have to start that whole stage over again. Very arcadey, and to be expected from a shmup, but not being able to gain more hit point slots and/or lives is annoying.

About the blandness: one reason I enjoy shmups is that, at their best, they're exciting. Cool weapons, special attacks, challenging bosses, and beautiful bullet patterns are some of the features I look forward to in these sorts of games. Graceful Explosion Machine has none of these. Well, maybe it has bosses; I never got to the final stages of any of the planets to find out. Anyway, the on-screen action is nice to look at, but that's all. The four planets are mainly differentiated by color and a few unique enemies. You have the same weapons the entire time, and no upgrades. There's nothing nifty in the game to make you feel powerful other than little sound effects when your combo meter reaches a milestone. Like I said, it's bland.

One final note: despite what it says on the store page, Steam Cloud does not appear to be available for this game. I tried playing on my PC this past weekend, and couldn't carry over my save progress from my Steam Deck.

If you're down for an unexciting but challenging score-chaser of a shmup, by all means pick this up. Otherwise, I really can't recommend it.

I've dumped plenty of time into this game on Switch since 2017, where I saw it through a trailer on Nintendo's Youtube page. I always just assumed it was a Switch exclusive, been emulating it on my PC (game legally dumped from my own hacked Switch) for a good while now... oops. Combat is simple and satisfying with every weapon having intuitive strengths and weaknesses, enemy variety always keeps things interesting. Being able to set high scores offline and then connect later to upload them is a very welcome feature, used it a lot back in the day.

I originally got this game when it came out on switch, and recently decided to re buy it on steam to get all of the achievements. I can say without a doubt that this is my favorite shoot-em-up style game, and is up there with my favorite games of all time. It is an extremely well crafted game that doesn't overstay its welcome, and it is one of those games that i keep coming back to because it just sits in the back of my mind. I really do hope that there is a sequel that expands on what is already here someday, but I doubt it will ever happen. I absolutely recommend this game to anyone looking for a great indie title.

This is a sharply designed and good-looking shooter that doesn't really play like anything else. You can compare it to other games, for sure: the two-way horizontal-scroll looping levels resemble Defender or Astro Tripper, and there are plenty of twin-stick games with a similar focus on combo multipliers that make your score skyrocket if you can continuously destroy baddies without getting hit. But the meat here is the 4-weapon system that emphasizes managing resources. Your general-purpose blaster overheats quickly but cools down when you kill enemies with your 3 sub-weapons: a close-range spin attack, an armor-penetrating laser, and a seeker missile swarm. These sub-weapons, meanwhile, run off energy crystals dropped by enemies. Spend your heat and energy unwisely, and you'll let the combo drop and tank your score. If that sounds intimidating, don't worry: I quickly learned to play by feel, reading the situation and applying the right weapon for the job. Juggling enemy swarms to string along a combo for an entire stage feels wonderful when you nail it. I'm not sure gamers who don't care to play for score will find much to appreciate, given that the most interesting parts of the design revolve around the combo system. Score-chasers, though, should have a blast.

・固有ギミックのあるワールド
・ステージリザルトも充実している
つまり良作・・・と、言いたいところですが、

武装のゲージ消費が厳しく設定されてて、余裕のないゲージ管理をひたすらずっっっっっっっとやらされて息が詰まるぞ！
爽快感もあるけどそれを遥かに上回るストレス！

既存の2DSTGが好きな人にはおすすめではないけど、
普段シューティングを遊ばない人は逆にたのしめるかも。

I bought this on a heavy sale and have enjoyed my time with it! I'm honestly really surprised more people haven't reviewed here on Steam, though I know its main selling point was for the Switch.

Really clean, brightly coloured simplistic design both visually and gameplay-wise.
You're given all the tools available from the very start. 4 different weapons, each requiring you to balance your power meter (or have to wait a few seconds as it recharges). The mobs will slightly change in quantity/difficulty as the game goes on, the difficulty curve felt neither too easy or difficult for the majority of levels.

If you're not a fan of getting combos, trying to get high scores without dying, shoot 'em ups in general..I'm not sure how much enjoyment you'll get out of it. As it can get repetitive if you're not having fun with the main combat. That said, I'm not usually one to try and get all the top scores and I still found the campaign's fast-paced gameplay to be addictive and satisfying. Overall just a really smooth experience. The controls felt great and responsive using my Xbox 360 controller, however I didn't see any options to change the control setup. There is a setting to turn off screen shake which I used and it helped a lot.

If the trailer looks appealing to you I definitely recommend giving it a try. The game is fairly short, around 5 hours, but it ended before overstaying its welcome. There's the the replayability factor as well if you're interested in perfecting the levels/getting high scores.

[code]Глубокий космос. На гигантский город-корабль нападает раса жуков-механоидов и растаскивает некие энергетические штуковины по ближайшей планетной системе. Мы же, в роли выжившего пилота маленькой Изящной Взрывной Машины (ИВМ), во что бы то ни стало должны вернуть эти ценные артефакты.[/code]
Это - описание пяти первых картинок при старте игры, еще четыре мы узрим лишь после прохождения последнего уровня - в них [spoiler]пилот щелкает пальцами и открывает портал к своему дому[/spoiler].

[h1]Игровой процесс[/h1]
Наша задача - найти все [strike]камни бесконечности и вернуть всех распылившихся[/strike] украденные кристаллы основ (warp crystal). В поисках мы посетим 4 планеты различной цветовой гаммы. На каждой планете нам придется пробиться через ожесточенное сопротивление насекомых на 8 обычных уровнях и одном финальном.
В помощь нам - материализовавшиеся из ниоткуда бластер, энергетическая сабля, генератор снайперского луча и нескончаемый запас почти самонаводящихся ракет. Чем чаще используем бластер, тем сильнее он перегревается, а применение остальных средств усмирения противников сажает нам аккумулятор - он сам подзаряжается со временем или с подбором позолоченных останков побежденных монстров. Ну и дэш-рывок очень полезен для прорыва через орды.

[b]1) Обычные уровни[/b] (1-1, ..., 1-8 и тэдэ).
Здесь все выглядит просто - необходимо выкашивать все волны противников по три раза (три фазы). Когда монстров остается немного, появляется специальная полоска, измеряющая их оставшуюся численность.
Вас подбили в первый раз - обединичивается Ваш комбо-счетчик и Вы теряете ячейку целостности корабля. К счастью, иногда из врагов выпадают лайф-сейверы, то бишь аптечки для ИВМ.
Если взорветесь после третьего попадания - повторяете с последней пройденной фазы без набранных ранее очков. Вообще. В. Нуле. !!!
Взорветесь в третий раз - извольте начать уровень по-новой!

[b]2) Финальные уровни[/b] (1-W и тэдэ).
Отличия от обычных уровней:
- тут надо выкосить всех лишь за один раз;
- волны гораздо толще и опаснее.
Взрываемся - соответственно, начинаем уровень заново.

По мере прохождения игры становится доступным дополнительный режим вызовов, где надо:
а) пройти все обычные уровни планеты подряд, не умерев;
б) пройти все более усложненные финальные уровни.

Касаемо самих планет. Задники совершенно не впечатляют (особенно на обычных уровнях), такое ощущение, что они различаются только цветом.
Геометрия уровней бедна - чаще всего летаем туда-сюда по небольшим пещерным полостям от бублика и лишь иногда ютимся в действительно ограниченных пространствах. Закоулки не сбивают с толку, преграды вырастают крайне редко, только движущиеся лазеры немного ускоряют темп, но, опять же, только раза три за всю игру.

Сочные цвета, динамичная синтетическая музыка и приличное видовое разнообразие враждебно настроенных существ немного притупляют общую репетативность игры.

[h1]Техническая реализация[/h1]
Ни вылетов, ни лагов, ни фризов не замечено.

Единственное неудобство - иногда корабль может не развернуться по нажатию кнопки "Пробел", но, возможно, это проблема моей клавиатуры.

[b]Итоги:[/b] цветастая расстрельная аркада, которая раскрывает практически все свои карты уже в первые двадцать минут игры и далее интересна только попытками набивания высоченных комбо ради каких-то устранительных рейтингов и ачивочек.

En Graceful Explosion Machine, nos encontramos ante un Shot'em up de desplazamiento lateral, y a ratos (por la cantidad de enemigos) un bullet hell. Todo ello dentro de un mundo con colores pastel y diseños cuquis.

Contaremos con un total de 4 mundos, y cada uno de ellos con divididos en 9 niveles, siendo el último de ellos, el que más dificultades nos ofrezca apareciendo algunos de los enemigos con varias modficiaciones (tamaño/daño).
Los niveles tendran un diseño de "cavernas", con un desarrollo tipo "bucle/loop".
Cada nivel esta compuesto por 3 "fases", que se iran completando al eliminar cierta cantidad de enemigos. Y entre fase y fase iran variando el diseño del nivel, asi como la aparción de ciertos enemigos.
Al ir completando los mundos desbloquearemos el modo desafío de estos.

Para completar este desafio dispondremos de varias herramientas:
*El disparo "bala", que tendra una funcionalidad tipo metralleta con sobrecaletamiento (para no abusar),
*El corte de 360º, que nos servira para atacar a los enemigos cuando nos veamos rodeadosz a la vez que evitaremos sus disparos.
*La rafaga de misiles, que iran automaticamente hacia los enemigos, (tendra prioridad el lado hacia el que indiquemos en el joystick)
*El rayo laser, que hara un gran daño a un solo objetivo.
*El dash, que nos servira para escapar hacia la dirección que queramos si nos vemos desbordados, sin que los enemigos nos hagan daño, pero no podremos esquivar sus balas.
Con todo esto, tendremos que hacer uso de la gestión ya que los ataques especiales consumen energia, que recuperaremos recogiendo la que sueltas los enemigos, Y los ataques normales, no podremos usarlos de continuo, ya que se sobrecalienta el arma y nos podemos quedar rato sin poder usarlos.

Sin contar el modo desafío el juego nos dara (dependiendo de lo habiles que seamos) entre 5 y 7 horas de juego.

디펜더처럼 좌우로 이동 가능하고 레이더가 달린 슈팅게임입니다. 디펜더 팬으로써 지나칠 수 없었기에 바로 구매했습니다.

디펜더와는 달리 이동속도가 빠르지 않고 지키는 요소는 없이 슈팅만 한다는 점은 약간 아쉬웠지만 복잡한 업그레이드 없이 처음부터 끝까지 완벽한 스펙이면서 장단점이 확실한 4가지 무기들을 적절하게 활용하는 방식이 마음에 들었고 그래픽은 아름답고 눈이 편안해지며 음악도 좋았습니다.

디펜더만큼의 재미와 깊이는 없지만 디펜더의 정신나간 난이도가 부담이 될때 하기 좋습니다.

Really awkward controls for turning around and changing weapons, and the camera movement feels really nauseating. Checking out some gameplay videos, nothing major seems to happen as the levels progress. There are no bosses or weapon changes, just the same content with different colors. There are much better games. Defender had more objectives and less camera issues decades ago.

An entertaining shmup in the same vain as Sega’s Fantasy Zone.

The playful, angular graphics are a treat. Distinct color and sound notifications free up your eyes to focus on the fray and add impactful situational awareness. The four power-ups work well with one another, although the beam is a bit situational. An upgrade system could’ve added more potential depth, but the concept wouldn’t be compatible with the game’s score-based gameplay.

On sale the game is a steal and, outside of a few nitpicks like the scarcity of health drops or enemy projectile damage during dashes, Graceful Explosion Machine is a GEM.

A high score game where keeping your multiplier up is part of the difficulty. Where slaughtering waves of enemies as efficiently as possible before they body you, turns into you dashing around the map desperately looking for more enemies to keep that combo going.
You press a button to change the direction you face, so shooting things above and below you becomes a real connundrum, mitigated by the use of other weapons that will deplete a meter that you reaaaly don't want to run out.
Enemies are introduced through the levels you unlock as you go and range in size, attack methods and how much health they have. Leaving you to wonder how best to gracefully explode them

This is a really well designed game and will be looking to pick it up on switch as well.

Really satisfying and stylish little shoot-em-up.
The different weapon types are all fun to use, and the scoring system and game mechanics are simple enough for even casuals to get into it. In fact, all the achievements are totally attainable. The difficulty is very reasonable.

My only criticism is that the levels are a bit too similar, and more types of enemies or level hazards would have made the game more interesting. There's maybe not enough content to justify full price, but on any kind of sale it'll definitely be worth it.

Yep, pretty much brilliant.

Graceful Explosion Machine is - if you'll excuse the superlative - easy to play, difficult to master. I'm about half an hour in and already, I want to master every level for that elusive S+ rank, playing perfectly without getting hit or breaking the multiplayer.

Thankfully, the game controls buttery-smooth and weapons are all a joy to use, so every failure not only feels like your own fault but also encourages you to pick the pad up and start playing again. There are those who'll play Graceful Explosion Machine just to get to the end, and they'll certainly get their money's worth; but those who truly want to excel will find plenty of reasons to return and climb the scoreboards. The game's short levels make this perfect for arcade enthusiasts, and whether you play for half an hour or half a day, whether rushing to the end or mastering every level, this is one of those excellent games that gives back as much as you're willing to put in.

Those looking for a deep storyline and rich characterisation will have to look elsewhere, but to expect that from Graceful Explosion Machine would be missing the point; this is a respectful modern take on the twitch arcade gaming of yesteryear, and in concentrating purely on its gameplay it offers a tight and addictive experience.

Oh, and the music is lovely.

Highly boring attempt at SHMUP. This game should be sell 3 $ max. You are basically stuck on the same small zone and waves of ennemies attack you, you have to clean the same waves 3 times, then the level is complete. you got 10 missions based on the level with same objective, then a new "map" which is the same one but a different color.
you will use the same 4 weapons the entire time, using the same technics to clean those waves.... as you progress some small variety and type of ennemies or quantity can be noticed... this is the most grindy and boring SHMUP I have ever played and I would be okay with that if it was a student project sold for a few bucks on steam....

Bright, shooty, punchy, awesome. Fly through the swarm keeping the kill-combo alive for maximum points using five different weapons each designed for different situations, available at all times to use or mis-use as you see fit. Once you know what everything does and the enemy clusters it's best used against there's a smooth flow to the action that only relents if you let it, because once you're a graceful explosion machine it just feels wrong to slow down.

Pure, Old-fashion, but awesome game. It takes me back to the pass and reminds me something beautiful about arcade game.
Though it was not a classical shooting-game like Dodonpachi or Deathsmiles but... I JUST CAN'T STOP PLAYING!
And also, I bought this on Nintendo Switch, too.

BTW, I got a strange problem: When I play it on steam, it will jump to desktop every once in a while without any notice or alert (Of course, the game is paused), whatever it's window or full-screen. That's annoying.

품격 있는 폭발의 미학을 지닌 우주선.

특정 공간 안에서 무한정 쏟아져나오는 몹들을 전부 소탕하는 슈팅 게임이다. 일반 무기 1개와 특수 무기 3개가 준비되있으며, 일반 무기는 게이지가 전부 차면 연사력이 느려지는 제한이 있고 특수 무기는 하단의 게이지를 활용해 사용한다. 특이하게도 이런 게임에 으레 있을 법한 비행기 강화나 무기 강화가 존재하지 않는다. 그래도 무기들의 화력은 충분하니 크게 걱정은 안 해도 될 정도. 오로지 자신의 손에만 의지해야 하는 진정한 피지컬 게임이다.

콤보가 끊어지지 않도록 최대한 빨리 몹들을 파괴하는 것이 중요한 게임이다. 각 몹들마다 특성이 다르며, 그 특성에 따른 무기를 적재적소에 활용하는 것이 중요한 게임이다. 앞서 말했듯 강화가 존재하지 않고 오로지 4종의 무기와 2번의 대쉬 기회만 존재하니, 이걸 최대한 잘 활용해야 한다. 지네 같은 일부 심하게 거슬리는 몹들이 존재하고 몹들의 등장 주기가 짧은 편이라 게임의 템포는 상당히 빠르고 그만큼 난이도도 조금 어렵다. 그래도 도저히 불가능 해 보일 정도로 어렵냐면 그 정도는 아니고 적당히 도전 심리를 유발할 정도의 난이도를 지니고 있다.

총 4개의 행성이 준비되있고 각 행성마다 9개(+1)의 스테이지가 준비되어 있다. 가격에 비해 스테이지가 조금 적은게 아쉽지만, 단순히 클리어만 할 게 아니라 S랭크 이상의 점수를 노릴 거라면 어느 정도 반복 플레이를 해야 하기 때문에 보기보다 플레이타임이 조금 나오는 게임이다. 한 번 챕터를 클리어하면 챌린지 모드의 스코어링 모드도 추가되고. 게임 실력에 어느 정도 자신이 있다면 올 S랭크도 노려보자. (본인기준 6.7시간)

갖출건 다 갖췄고 난이도도 살짝 매운맛이 담겨진 수작 슈팅 게임. PS4, Switch와 더불어 동시에 발매된 게임인데, 이상하게 스팀판은 유독 관심을 못 받는 것 같다.

This game is beautiful. The 4 weapon system is a breath of fresh air. Each has it's own purpose and use, while switching between them is a total breeze. In addition, two dashes can be saved up to boost horizontally in a quick burst. All together it controls smoothly and the mechanics behind each ability feel fun and accurate.

Add on top of all that a similar scoring system to Geometry Wars or Assault Android Cactus, and you have yourself an addicting high score chase horizontal shmup. Each map has it's own leaderboard, playing in manageable 3-5min chunks. For the super hardcore, entire worlds can be done in sequence for ~20min run. Keeping a perfect combo and clearing as fast as possible is a thrilling experience.

If you are a fan of shmups, leaderboards, cute graphics, and solid mechanics give this game a whirl!

If you played We Are Doomed, this might appeal to you .

INsteadd of top-down, this tim it's side to side with an ever changing level.

use the different weapons to maximize your power and combo, while dashing through eenemies to avoidd damage.

It's quick to pick up and play, difficult to master,
But , just like we are doomed, this one is easy for anyone to play ^^

Seems short, but whn you are going for score, this wont be an issue.

Think defender from Atari 2600, mixed with vanguard, and then update it to the 21st century, thats Graceful Explosion Machine

One of my favorite under the radar surprises in a while, this horizontally scrolling shooter takes inspiration from the classic Defender and its left/right mechanic, and adds a very compelling weapon system where you have one basic weapon and three specials, and the only way to use the specials is by killing enemies and collecting their energy. It's very well balanced -- all four weapons are needed and useful against specific enemies, yet you can't rely on one over the others. The basic gun isn't strong enough to kill some of the nastier bad guys, but you can't just spam special weapons, you'll run out of energy. It's a constant back and forth, split second decision making in the middle of a fire fight.

The game starts out easy but the difficulty ramps up nicely by the second planet. Online leaderboards, achievements, trading cards, cloud saves -- this is a high quality title, well worth the price if you like shooters. 9/10

[b][i]We Are Doomed[/i] was awesome, and [i]Graceful Explosion Machine[/i] follows suit.[/b] Nothing terribly fresh here, nor large in scope BUT everything is done remarkably well. Controls are super tight. Gameplay is addicting, and fair.

[i]Essenitally, this is a twin-stick-ish played in a horizontal plane.[/i] Mind you, this is not really a scrolling shooter. The playing field loops and you can go either direction.

+Strong 'one more run' factor

-It starts easy, but I've hit a wall of difficulty that I'm hoping to overcome; we'll see

Wow! This is an incredibly tight shooter that is a bit of Defender in a modern style. It’s definitely channeling the spirit of a young Eugene Jarvis. I have nit-picks, but I don’t think they’re worth mentioning because the more I play the more I find that each tiny flaw feels deliberately designed to make the game more fun.

I played with keyboard, which feels pretty natural, but I’m sure it would be at home on a game pad. Basically arrows move, space flips you from left to right, shift dashes, and WASD is 4 different weapons. There’s a main weapon that overheats and the other 3 come from a pool of ammo refilled by dead enemy pellets. Really simple and definitely gets you into a state of flow.

The audio and art are just ok, but unique and easy to understand. Sometimes it gets a bit cluttered, but again this feels like an intentional choice, especially given the title of the game. If you like frantic shooters give this a try.

UPDATE: I've finished the game now and have a few additional thoughs.

The introduction of new enemy types throughout the game really keeps things fresh! None are particularly difficult on their own, but each has a unique pattern that combines within the swarm to create a huge variety emergent situations.

It also took me a while to pay attention to the combo system. It's very simple, but really adds an extra layer of challenge if you're trying to keep the combo going.

Nice little shoot em up game, first played it on the Nintendo Switch, then I heard its coming to Steam and the PS4 so I bought it again.

It's a game about controlling your little "ship" and shoot up a variety of enemies in a restricted space, there are a few different weapons/moves you could use and they work really well so you wouldn't be smashing the main cannon all the time. Actually you can't smash it all the time because weapons cost energy and you need to balance the energy of your ship by collecting the crystals dropped by the enemies. There are 4 planets with about 10 levels each, seems a little short for a $13 game but the difficulty rise up quickly and chance is you wouldn't beat them on a single run. Overall this isn't classical shooter like Striker 1945 or Dodonpachi, it's more like a top-down beat em up game trapped in a alternative view angle, or Resogun in a panic room.

I really like the game, so despite the following flaws I still give it a thumb up, I hope the developers could address them in future updates.

So about the a few flaws I had with the Steam version of the game:

1. The default control scheme for keyboard sucks. You got arrows keys for movement and A/S/D/LShift/Space for weapons/dash. It needs to be made configurable ASAP, maybe change the default scheme to be WSAD movement based.

2. (update) This might not be the developer's fault, but the game has vsync problem with my laptop. According to the developer the game always run with vsync on, yet the frame rate caps at 120 instead of 60 on my 60hz laptop, and occasionally the graphics tears up a little while the game loses the ability to recognize my control for like half a second. Forcing vsync ON with the nvidia control panel didn't solve the problem. Capping frame rate at 60 with RivaTuner Statistics Server makes the game skipping a lot of frames like running at 30fps (but displayed as 60fps). I've yet to find a working solution to this particular problem.

3. (fixed in the 1.1.2 update) Support for Nvidia Optimus needs to improve a bit. The game defaults to integrated graphics which made my laptop 10C hotter than it should be, forcing discrete graphics with nvidia control panel solves the problem, but I think the problem deserves to be mentioned and should be avoided by the developers in the first place.

Graceful Explosion Machine é uma experiência intensa e divertida por conta de suas mecânicas simples e ação fluida. A dificuldade é balanceada e exige domínio das armas e movimentos da nave — muitas vezes eu morri por ignorar algum inimigo mais difícil de derrotar. O principal problema do jogo é a pequena variedade de modos e situações, porém aqueles que gostam de obter pontuações melhores têm vários motivos para revisitar os estágios. Graceful Explosion Machine é bem viciante, ao menos enquanto dura.
