I played the story all the way through while it is short it doesn't take away from the emotion and heartbreaking atmosphere of the game.
I feel like it was very educational depicting real types habitat loss caused by humans, harms of animal trade, and on a brighter note seed dispersal.
I hope incorporation of education, and conservation through games.

Franchement, Gibbon: Beyond the Trees m’a laissé un peu entre deux sentiments. Le jeu est magnifique, bienveillant, plein de bonnes intentions, et clairement fait avec le cœur, mais derrière toute cette poésie, il y a quand même une expérience de jeu ultra légère. Développé par Broken Rules (ceux derrière Old Man’s Journey), il est sorti en 2022 avec une vraie ambition éthique : sensibiliser au sort des gibbons et à la déforestation en Asie du Sud-Est. L’équipe s’est entourée d’ONG et de chercheurs pour faire les choses bien, et ça se sent. Le message est sincère, le ton est touchant sans tomber dans le moralisme, et j’ai vraiment appris des trucs. Ça, pour moi, c’est un vrai plus.

Par contre, là où je décroche un peu, c’est sur la partie "jeu". Déjà, je n’ai trouvé nulle part d’indication que les ventes contribuaient financièrement à une association ou à un programme de préservation, et à 12,99 €, j’espérais que mon achat ait aussi un petit impact concret au-delà de la sensibilisation. Parce qu’en termes de contenu, c’est court. Très court. L’histoire principale se boucle en une petite heure, et juste quand tu commences à bien maîtriser les mouvements et à apprécier la sensation de balancement, le générique arrive.

Il y a bien le chapitre “Libération” qui te fait revisiter la map pour ouvrir des cages et sauver des animaux, mais disons que c’est plus une extension de gameplay qu’une vraie suite narrative. Le principe est sympa, mais comme on ne contrôle pas vraiment la direction du personnage, rater une cage peut vite devenir frustrant. Et malgré les environnements réussis, la collecte devient répétitive au bout d’un moment. Les défis journaliers sont une bonne idée sur le papier: course d’endurance, de vitesse, daily run, mais là encore, on tourne un peu en rond.

C’est dommage, parce que le level design est franchement excellent : le mouvement est fluide, les décors sont cohérents et agréables à parcourir, les graphismes sont adorables (cette patte aquarelle !), et l’ambiance sonore, avec ses chants d’oiseaux et sa musique douce, t’embarque vraiment. Mais pour une heure de jeu et quelques défis redondants, difficile de justifier le prix. À 5 €, pourquoi pas. À presque 13 €, ça pique un peu, surtout quand tu ressors du jeu avec ce sentiment de "déjà fini ?".

J’ai adoré le message, j’ai aimé le geste, mais j’aurais voulu un peu plus de jeu derrière cette belle intention.

It is a very cute game with a great story but way too short and simple
What you saw in the trailer is the game, the entire game, gameplay wise
The base one button grab mechanic is well implemented and very fun, but that's it
It's a repetitive runner game with way too much focus on art and design
I feel like most of the environments could've been just new mechanics that would've added depth
I also don't think having human AI that complicated with that many animations is really necessary
I do really support the cause and it's a fine 1 hour chill game with some endless runs

From the videos I was expecting a platform game and/or maybe mouse-aimed swinging game. This is more like one of those "runner" games, but instead of pressing one key to jump, it's mostly holding one key to not fall and *letting go* to jump.

I like platform games and mouse-aimed swinging games. I don't like single button runner games, or even, in this case, games with two buttons that don't really have much behavioral difference between them. To be fair, a bit later it also introduces a third button that also isn't interesting.

A beautiful little game with a sad story and a message that gets more relevant with each passing year.

The gameplay is fun but pretty simple. I gets repetetive, so that this is a pretty short game feels fitting. It does not overstay its welcome and tells the story effectively in this time.

There is also a post-game mode after the story, which is fun but personally it cant grab me enough to do the entirety of it, especially since you can only go forward and don't turn around, so if you missed one of the cages you can't get it anymore. This mode is also supposed to be 4-5 Hours long apparantly, and ts great for people who want more of the game, but I feel like just playing the story and checking this mode out briefly is the perfect lenght for a game like this for me personally.

The heavily inspired gameplay from Alto's Adventure is decent and can be sometimes annoying, and the story is exactly the cliche that you would expect from these types of games. But god the visual of this game is gorgeous! It's such a therapeutic journey to jump around as a Gibbon in the beautiful landscapes of this game. Even the areas that are designed to be scary or ugly (like human and construction infested areas in the forest) are super engaging to watch!

My best game experience since a while! A very Biocentric game, showing how the growing humanity is destroying the world biodiversity :/
The gameplay itself is very fun, using the principles of Flow, by making the player soaring in the canopy. The game is under evaluated, it should got more review and prices! Amazing. Simple, pretty visuals, and simple mechanics, and a gripping story that has no words and still caused me to gasp out loud at least twice.
Frustrating, but for the right reasons, spoilers regarding that below.
[spoiler] There are portions of this where you will get frustrated that you can not reach areas that you want to. The game sets this up well, allowing you ample time to grow accustomed to your freedom among the jungle canopy before locking you in the stuffy confines of human developments. Suddenly you can't easily climb as high. The environment isn't built for you. It's confusing what you can and can't swing from, what will support you and what won't. You see power lines more often than tree branches, and it's a while before you realize that you've grown used to them instead. Swinging from a tree feels like something you "remember" rather than your natural habitat. [/spoiler] Absolutely blown away by the meta storytelling through gameplay mechanics. And all for a good cause.

Humans start shooting at me, doomed..?

Really felt so free in the beginning, made me feel so much joy
When the scenery started changing, there was much tension and suspense
My heart was broken, but hope still remains.

The swinging mechanics take time to get used to, and getting stuck at the ground can be demotivating, but once I figured out how to do it, it was just trial and error until the liberty of swinging is felt again. Would definitely replay in the future. Love the message behind this game.

Temple Run-Feeling mit schönem Artstyle!
Man schwingt sich durch die Geschichte und Erlebnisse der Gibbonfamilie. Nach der Hauptstory geht's sogar noch weiter, man kann ganz viele Achievements sammeln und tägliche Missionen machen.
Im Urwald macht es natürlich so viel mehr Spaß als auf abgebrannten Baggerlandschaften oder Siedlungen...

The game wants to tell us that humans are cruel. But I guess we know that already.

Buy the game to be a gibbon for an hour or two and swing from tree to tree.

Finished the main story already. But haven't started on the Liberation mode yet.

Did I enjoy it? Eh, it was alright. I kinda liked just swinging to move forward until it got repetitive.

[i]Gibbon: Beyond the Trees[/i]' visuals might look like 2D, but it's actually 3D, portrayed in a side-scroller view. I like how the game colors the gibbons to make them easy to distinguish. The background also looks great, especially in some areas that portray the environment as a whole.

[h3]Story[/h3]
The story is told without words. You'll see cutscenes with gibbons talking in their native language, which of course you won't understand. That being said, the game left a message not through its story, but rather its presentation. The levels in the story mode tell what happened to the gibbons' home bit by bit, chapter by chapter. It's disheartening to see what their home turns into, especially since it's happening in real life.

[b]Gameplay[/b]
[i]Gibbon: Beyond the Trees[/i] is an endless game in disguise. You'll traverse the forest with your hands, getting faster as you go, provided that you let go of the branch on time. That's all you need to do: keep on moving without dying. Some areas will require you to avoid burning fire that is located in a small section of the road, some will require you to gain momentum and jump over a cliff, and some will have eagles that can kill you if you get too high in the Liberation mode. Other than those, you should be able to progress safely without anything that can kill you—what matters is just the speed at which you are traveling to move faster.

The controls can take some time to get used to. In order to move the gibbons with their tree-hanging shenanigans, you are equipped with four control schemes: sliding, hanging on a branch, backflip, and dropping down to a lower tree. Hanging from one branch to another will be the fastest way for you to travel, although sliding can give you a good momentum to restart if you fail a jump or if the ground is tilted down. Backflip is there to increase your speed, and the drop-down is just a means to control your position.

That being said, it's hard to control your character. You can't use the directional arrows to move your character, so you can only control the character to some extent. However, this can become problematic when you need to make a minute decision, especially since the areas are spawned randomly. Sometimes, you might fall just because you happened to grab on to a branch that leads you to an area with no tree, and if you are unlucky, you might even have to deal with the huge cliff afterwards, meaning that you'll have to restart anyway.

The game goes for the double backflip. You can use backflip several times, and while the first one is easy to get used to, the second one is not. You need to be in a high position to do that, and usually, this also means that the camera will be so stretched out that you can hardly see what the character is currently doing. Unless you have a good eye, you'll miss that timing only because you accidentally trigger the backflip for the third time when you only want to do two.

The game was hard to figure out at the beginning. The controls never felt at home to me, and I didn't understand how the double flip works. However, as I got more used to it, the game started to feel repetitive. Even though the story mode separates the levels into chapters with different-looking environments, you still have to do the same thing over and over—no more challenges. This became worse after I finished the story mode and had to continue the Liberation mode.

The Liberation mode will shuffle all areas in the story mode and keep looping it endlessly. Sure, there might be objectives that you can get there, but I hate them since you need to move your character to crash into these objectives whenever possible. Sometimes, you won't be in a good position to get to them, which will rely on RNG since the areas are randomly generated. Moreover, there are just so many objectives you need to do where you just need to do the same thing without new mechanics. It was boring.

[b]Length and Difficulty[/b]
I finished the story mode in 1.4h. I then continued with the Liberation mode and finished it in 4.4h. The rest of my playtime was spent getting the remaining achievements. Some achievements might be harder to get, but other than that, the game is pretty easy in general.

[h1]Conclusion[/h1]
[i]Gibbon: Beyond the Trees[/i] tells a good message. It encourages you to save the gibbons and provides plenty of information about them. However, the game is very repetitive and boring. It seems as if it tries to extend its playtime without effort. The game seems to work better as an endless game, and although it has that, the objectives and the lack of challenges just make it worse since. Sadly, I can't seem to enjoy playing it, so I'm afraid I can't recommend this game.

This game is truly beautiful. The art is awesome and the gameplay is really relaxing, there are multiple control schemes you can use depending on what's comfortable. The game sends an important message and leaves a hole in your heart. Now yes the price is steep for 1-2 hours of story, but you can have much more fun with this game than that, i just completed the story and i see myself getting back to it whenever i wanna zone out and just be monke. Donated another 20eur to the cause out of 10. please buy this game and support apes and monkeys around the world.

Desde hace tiempo quería jugarlo por sus colores y ese aire relajante que transmite su gameplay. Lo que no esperaba era encontrarme con una experiencia tan artística y emocional. Todo en este juego es arte: los escenarios, la música, la animación, y hasta el movimiento del personaje.

Al principio, el gameplay puede sentirse un poco extraño, pero una vez entiendes cómo funciona el balanceo, todo se vuelve increíblemente fluido. La historia, aunque corta, es preciosa y conmovedora de principio a fin. Te atrapa con su narrativa sencilla, sin necesidad de palabras.

Y cuando crees que todo ha terminado, se abre el modo Liberación. Aquí puedes seguir explorando, conocer más animales y aprender datos interesantes sobre la fauna y los peligros que enfrentan. Me sorprendió cómo una mecánica tan simple puede dar lugar a una experiencia tan profunda y significativa :'D

I enjoyed this. The story is extremely short but satisfying. The mechanics were a really fun thing to master, even though I don't feel like I did by the end of the story. There is extra that I don't think I want to do because I think its more of the same levels I've played before. I would say that this is worth getting on a large sale, considering how little there is to get out of it. If you can get it on sale, or just want to support the developers, I recommend it. I'm happy with what time I spent playing this. 7/10

Beautiful fluid the floor is lava platformer - or rather treeformer - with great visual, audio and way to bring the message across.
Just when you've gotten comfortable with the controls and roam high speed through your natural habitat the way you're born for, you all of a sudden can't anymore. What humans do literally makes your life much harder.
An amazing way of making you realize and kudos to the designers for that as well.
Smooth as silk at 90FPS on Deck and not hard to master controls, so it's definitely also suitable for children, including teaching them something playfully.

Breve esperienza, che sarebbe potuta anche essere ancora più breve per me. A livello di gameplay è solo un oscillare tra i rami. Molto divertente, però facendo solo ciò e non essendoci una così grande sfida, ci sono alcune sezioni dove annoia. A livello di immersività è invece è ottimo. Tra suoni ambientali o degli animali, ti senti veramente nella giungla. Ed avanzando senti tu stesso come il progresso umano influisce sull'ambiente dato che rispetto all'inizio, dove si è 100% nella natura, senti come cambia l'avanzata dei gibboni quando si cominciano ad incontrare gli umani. Если убрать большинство плантаций пальмового масла в Юго-Восточной Азии, то результатом станет не увеличение численности краснокнижных животных, а наоборот, местные мужики только больше начнут охотиться на этих зверюшек, чтобы хоть как-то заработать на их продаже. Но большинство этих мужиков просто поедут на заработки в те страны, где дурачки ноют о проблеме бедных зверюшек, продолжая покупать то самое пальмовое масло, но уже по большей цене.

А игра нормальна, сама по себе. Цветастая бибизянка скачет, освобождает зверушек, фактики о природе всякие есть. Если брать в наборе по скидке и просто периодически, от нexyй делать, в ней бегать, то некоторое удовлетворение от этого можно получить.

Great game.
Easy to learn the basics but you can improve a lot as you keep playing and it feels amazing once you start to really master it.
Movement can feel very fluid, it is almost of hard to explain.
Story is really short, but I liked it. Plus there is an endless mode if you want to keep playing.
My favorite part about the game is that every day there is a short level with limited time to see how far you can get and there is a leader board to see how you do compared to others. I keep coming back to it, even if just for the daily which takes about 5 minutes.
Sadly you can't play with other people, but if this game had some sort of online mode to race each other in real time it would be insane.

Quando seres humanos encontram florestas verdinhas, montanhas imponentes e animais vivendo em paz e tranquilidade, já pensam: hummm... esse local é até bonzinho, mas ficaria incrível se explorássemos uns recursos aqui, colocássemos uns fogos ali, construíssemos trocentos prédios acolá.

Até pensam em deixar um pedacinho mequetrefe de terra intocável e meia dúzia de animais. Obviamente a contragosto mas simular compromisso com a sustentabilidade é essencial. Afinal, os ambientalistas não têm nada melhor para fazer além de ficar empacando quem está sinceramente preocupado com o progresso da humanidade - o único que realmente "importa", diga-se de passagem.

Gibbon: Beyond the Trees es un juego de plataformas, con mecánicas endless runner, donde controlaremos a dos gibones, Pink y Lilac, unos primates característicos por sus largos brazos que le permiten realizar una braquiación excelente, la cual consiste en balancearse entre las ramas de los árboles con gran soltura y habilidad. Durante la aventura acompañaremos a estos gibones a través de las frondosas selvas tropicales de Borneo (Malasia), de manera que podamos admirar la belleza de estos enclaves naturales y al mismo tiempo hacer una llamada de socorro a la difícil situación a la que se enfrentan estos parajes. El ser humano lleva años deforestando estas selvas, con el fin de establecer plantaciones de aceite de palma, construir enormes presas hidráulicas o establecer nuevos asentamientos humanos. Esto no solo afecta a miles de especies de animales y plantas, sino que también obliga a las tribus indígenas a desplazarse o mezclarse con la civilización, perdiendo su identidad propia.

[h2]Jugabilidad / Apartado técnico[/h2]
Gibbon nos ofrece una jugabilidad rápida y divertida, estilo endless runner, es decir, el gibón se mueve de forma automática y nuestro objetivo en cada partida es llegar lo más lejos posible. El juego consiste en desplazarnos por bosques o asentamientos humanos balanceándonos entre ramas, lianas, cornisas y cables a gran velocidad. Deberemos pulsar y soltar el botón de balanceo en el momento adecuado para no perder aceleración, así como usar el botón de correr para deslizarnos por superficies descendentes. Además, podremos dar volteretas en el aire, lo que nos otorgará impulso extra. La partida termina si caemos en algún obstáculo peligroso, como barrancos o ríos, si tocamos las llamas de algún incendio o si nos atrapa el águila azor que nos intentará dar caza de vez en cuando.
Por un lado, tendremos una breve campaña, con Pink como protagonista, que servirá para contarnos la situación que viven los bosques de Borneo mientras tratamos de salvar a Lilac de unos furtivos. Adicionalmente, dispondremos del modo “liberación”, en esta ocasión seremos Lilac, y nuestra misión será rescatar a otros animales enjaulados mientras nos movemos por diversos entornos urbanos o naturales. Finalmente, tendremos la posibilidad de jugar una carrera diaria, compitiendo con otros jugadores en tablas de clasificación. El juego derrocha belleza a través de un bonito apartado gráfico dibujado a mano, realmente colorido y lleno de vida.

Gibbon: Beyond the Trees pretende ser un juego didáctico, que ilustra la complicada situación de los bosques tropicales asiáticos (y de otras partes del mundo), al mismo tiempo que nos ofrece información sobre la biología y comportamiento de los gibones. A nivel técnico el juego ofrece una jugabilidad excelente, muy dinámica y entretenida, aunque puede llegar a hacerse algo monótona. Es por ello que el juego no es excesivamente largo, pudiendo completarse al 100% entre 5-7 horas, dependiendo del tiempo que tardemos en obtener todos los coleccionables. Corre estupendamente en Steam Deck.
