It's a simple and straight forward 4X, just very basic. There is a solid foundatioon, it just needs more, more description of what research does, what building the things researched does and more ways to actually interact with the othe races. It needs more research branches, maybe one that gives multiple diplomacy tracks, instead of one total. Maybe split out into the three diplomacy types with small bonuses to make them more effective.
THe exploration ships were handy and I liked the exploit resource mechanic, once I figured it out.

End of the day it just doen't have enough to it it's very shallow and the diplomacy is awful. With more research content and a few additions to improve diplomacy it would be a much better game.
