As always, an excellent game from Zachtronics. Cool puzzles, although a tad easier than their previous games. I'm on the last stage of the main campaign, and looking forward to my achievement hunting round, playing solitaire and hack*match, while brainstorming extra puzzles )))
This is hardly a game. It starts off fairly simple and trivial. I even had the thought of, 'okay, this is fun!'. But the second you finish these starting task, good fuggin luck. Its like going from the baby pool, where they've supplied you with a floatation device, and the second you start to feel like this is for little babies, they take a knife, pop your floaties, and drop you off in the middle of the artic ocean, in the middle of a foggy, overcast night. GL. You probably wont have fun.

Оставляет некоторое послевкусие, что как будто самых грандиозных задач, которые можно было бы решить с помощью экз, я так и не увидел. Сюжет конечно был, но в текстовом формате - ну такое. Экшона бы немного, а то где-то поменяли данные, и теперь сын президента это его клон, где то скопировали секретные материалы о съемках инопланетян в США. Шутки-шутеечки. В SpaceChem были уровни-боссы, вот это была заруба! И в целом ощущалось, что ты занимаешься чем то важным.
Exapunks это по ощущениям расширенная версия TIS-100, идея достаточно хороша, но не хватило
Те же самые уровни("боевки с энеми экза") чувствуются как то, что хочется побыстрее скипнуть
По уровню сложности даже не знаю, у меня 3 уровня не прошли по размеру команд, и в последнем уровне основной компании я думал 2 дня над алгоритмом решения. Главное иметь некоторую дисциплину из советов, которые я упомянул ниже, что бы не утонуть в своём ужасном коде и не переписывать вновь
Вообще, главное не иметь в голове ограничения и уметь придумывать как еще можно использовать многопоточку. Например банальное, я перекинул экзу на порт, где нет других экз и выставил ей локальный M регистр, и использовал его как временную переменную.
Так же хочется отметить оптимизационный потенциал уровней. Он безграничен. Я на реддите нашел пост с лучшими решениями игроков по каждому уровню. Это. Просто. Нечто.
И конечно, документация к игре - это потрясающие 2 пдфки отличного качества, которые радуют глаз
По советам я бы выделил следующее:
1) Пишите комментарии через ; и указывайте, че вы передаете и что получаете, это в разы упростит жизнь при отладке и дальнейшем написании кода
2) используйте пробелы в начале строки, что бы обозначить вложенность, так глазам проще воспринимать
3) синхронизация экз между собой это ваше дыхание. Подумайте какие триггеры вам нужны и как реализовать эту механику
4) лучшее, что я делал - это рисовал на листочке какие данные какая экз мне кидает и какое действие я должен сделать. Имба
5) Проще всего в начале понять че от тебя хотят, потыкать тесты, понять какие это ограничения внесет в будущую архитектуру
6) Называйте осмысленно циклы и воркеров, которые появляются в ваших программах

Описывая свой опыт я понял что я получил много удовольствия решая задачки и синхронизируя код между собой. Огромное поле свободы и применения фантазии, что бы решить задачки, это приятно

Hacking simulator using cute robots. RTFM closely anticipating challenge difficulty rising. Encode loops and tests precisely to uncover occasional cyberpunk-themed lore.
I really enjoyed the story and how they made so many "analog" elements to the world. I find it very aesthetic and it makes everything feel so much more real. Great puzzle, too - learned quite a few tricks along the way due to code size constraints (they are optional, though). +rep +rep +rep
This is one of my all-time favorite games.
Premise: Pretty rad.
Story: Made pretty engaging using very simple encounters with the characters around you.
Gameplay: Want to learn how to code? in a quasi-Assembly type programming language? Actually, don't worry about it, you'll learn as you go, and you might impress yourself with how much you manage to achieve with some basic commands and a can-do attitude! Don't get too cocky, though--the true test is to see if you can top the charts. Can you pass the test with the fewest lines of code? How about with the fewest necessary operations? How about the fewest independently-running programs? Each of these metrics are measured for all players in the webiverse (anonymously), and I have only topped the charts a couple of times (usually on either one or two metrics only) and ***WOW*** is it an amazing feeling. And the whole thing feels fun in a sort of "I'm hacking the system sort of way."
Music: I dig it, though most of it serves as just background music. You can honestly just play your favorite hacker lo-fi music and go to town.
Graphics: I really like the design and aesthetic of the visual assets made for this game (the retro look of the computer you use, the spider-like "web-scraping" hacky design of the EXAPUNK programs, and the spartan Mr. Robot-esque feel to the room you stay in, which is in an apartment in a sort of cyberpunk version of San Francisco, as I recall).
In summary: I loved this game, and I think that the rewards that await at the end of the challenges will end up feeling *really* worth it for any players who decide that they're willing to try something new. I finished the main game, and am torn between starting a new Zachtronics game or trying to 100% this game. They make a lot of really well-made games that I think everyone should try!

If the idea of programming puzzles where resources are limited sounds appealing, you'll like this game. If you like dystopian cyberpunk settings, you'll love it.
Around 5 years ago I started working in IT and tried the game for the first time - it didn't go well, I got completely stuck halfway through. 5 years later I'm giving it another go and now I'm halfway through the bonus campaign. So here goes a pro tip for you guys: just invest 5 years of your life into a developer career if you struggle with the game difficulty! Problem solved!
Edit: I've just found out, after reaching the last level in the bonus campaign, that there is a MODI command. Imagine finishing 99% of the game without ever using it. Apparently, 5 years in development are still not enough to read the documentation properly :D
Edit 2: what an awful achievement it was to get 100k points in Hack*Match. On the bright side, it made me buy a mechanical keyboard instead of the old membrane one, best investment lately if you ask me
As someone with a bit of programming background, I wasn't sure what to expect from a game built around assembly-style coding, but EXAPUNKS completely won me over. The 90s cyberpunk aesthetic and the clever decision to deliver documentation through printable hacker zines instead of a dry manual made the whole experience feel immersive rather than like homework. Watching my little EXAs fan out across a network, sometimes killing each other off after they've served their purpose, gave me a weird pride I haven't felt in a puzzle game before. The parallel computing angle — spinning up multiple agents to tackle a problem simultaneously — is where the real depth hides, and the moment it clicks is genuinely satisfying. It's not for everyone: if low-level thinking makes your eyes glaze over, you'll bounce off this fast, but if you enjoy the grind of coaxing elegant logic out of primitive tools, this is absolutely worth it.
A programming game with a simple assembly-like language, but unlike Shenzen and TIS-100 it has a great presentation, a simple learning curve, and easy-to-visualize responses to your inputs, while still presenting interesting and unique challenges.
Zachtronics' develops some of the most unique games in the industry. Their titles are genuinely hard to compare to anything else.
In EXAPUNKS, you solve programming puzzles that do an excellent job of teaching low-level concepts like registers and instruction sets. The core mechanic revolves around writing assembly-style code, but the real twist is parallel programming. You control multiple EXAs running simultaneously, with the ability to replicate EXAs, kill EXAs, and transmit data between EXAs. Each problem has an infinite number of solutions, and going back and optimizing them is a game on it's own. Fewer instructions, less cycles, fewest number of EXAs.
Story-wise, the game captures the nostalgia of early 2000s hacker culture extremely well. Each scenario feels distinct, with different objectives and constraints that keep things fresh. It never really gets boring, just intimidating when you first see a new task. But the satisfaction of having a solution is hard to compare.
As for difficulty, it ramps up quickly. I would recommend starting with SHENZHEN I/O, then moving on to EXAPUNKS, before finally tackling the wall that is TIS-100.
What an amazingly rewarding game this is.
I love the physical print off manuals done in the style of a zine. They really add a load of atmosphere to the game that you just wouldn't get with in game tutorials. I've only heard one of the main characters speak a few times but, because he's the author of the zines, he really feels like a well fleshed out character. Some cool touches are how they make you feel your hacks and what have you are affecting the game world as well, both in game and the zines as well.
The story is interesting enough and adds context but it will always take a back seat the the completely absorbing puzzles. I love that you can complete it any way you see fit and then refine it afterwards... if you want.
The limitations to the programming language within the game are well thought out and force you to get creative. I can't thing of another game that makes me feel like I've achieved something when I finish a scenario as much as this one does.
This is the 3rd game by Zachtronics I've played (TIS-100, Opus Magnum being the other two) and this is the best so far, Opus Magnum probably being 2nd. I didn't realise they were by the same Devs until I played this.
With that in mind, I'm going to try SHENZEN I/O and SpaceChem by the same Devs after this because they have a magic design idea that they keep on delivering in new ways: present a puzzle with cleverly restricted tools that can be used to solve it and allow the player to complete it however they think is best, and then (through the results of other players via histograms), encourage them to refine their solution to focus on one of three metrics, but that is optional so if you are pleased with the way you did it, that's fine. It's an addictive and very rewarding loop and they seem to weave it through most of their games.
As with most puzzle games I have played I hit a wall before the end of the game where the time and effort needed to beat the ever increasing difficulty of levels became too much and tipped from fun to frustration. I got to the KGOG-TV stage then after a few too many hours gave up, likely never to return to Exapunks again... but the fun I had with the game was well worth the time I spent playing it.

I think this game might be the easiest way to demonstrate synchronization and the incredible speed gains from multithreading. In one of my solutions, in 90 minutes I went from a very basic and clumsy but functional algorithm to beat a later level to an optimized multithreaded solution that ran 6x faster, used fewer lines of code, and two orders of magnitude less activity, all while actually being a safer solution that will never have synchronization issues. The limitations make the solutions really fun! You can get super creative with some of them.
Also if you pay attention, you'll notice your classic data structures coming up all over the place! Binary Trees, Singly Linked Lists, and tons more. I personally recommend solving first, then reconnecting the solutions you make with a DSA perspective, and revisit old solutions from time to time. You might be able to connect algorithms you've learned about with your solutions, and find interesting gains there!
Remember to comment your code (use ";"). You'll learn a lot more and not get confused when you need to re-use a part of a solution later.
The story itself has been fun so far. It's an interesting setting, and they leverage the 90's feel quite well.
the game is is interesting. but there is no way to restart it. you have to go deep into your PC's files to delete your saved data if you want to start from 0.
As usual, Zachtronics does not disappoint.
This game really highlights how damning the human condition is for me.
When I'm playing it, I fantasise having the life of the sickly little guy; stuck in his tiny city apartment, alone; writing code for a living.
Instead, I'm forced to be a relatively healthy guy; stuck in his relatively spacious house, with his significant other; writing code for a living.

Super cool! Like Shenzhen IO, I liked printing out the physical manual (zines here). The self-replicating code is a cool mechanic and the puzzles take good advantage of it. I also really like the battle bots stages, what a cool idea! Still have a couple of puzzles to return to at some point. Would highly recommend!

Absolutely rad. I'm not finished with this game yet, but I'm absolutely loving it. This isn't really a hacking game as much as it is a software engineering game, which is definitely more engaging in this format. The zine that you get to print out is also really not a gimmick, and it works amazingly for the gameplay and immersion of this world. This isn't the single hardest programming game out there, but it can definitely get challenging at points. If you're looking for a game that pushes it's gameplay and aesthetics to an extreme, definitely check this out! I haven't had this much fun playing a game in a long time!
This is still my favorite Zachtronics game. The spec is really well thought out. You are basically using Assembly to move little 'physical' robots, and so physical things like buses, bandwidth and latency map to analogous things that are affecting the automata. Collision avoidance, resource usage, etc. Very cool stuff. Highly recommended for anyone at all interested in computing, and even if not, you can learn something from completing the game.

My favorite Zachtronics game so far. It reminds [b]TIS-100[/b], but the austere setting is replaced by a sleek UI with a cool artwork design, it also features an interesting cyberpunk storyline and zines instead of [i]boring[/i] manuals.
The programming is based on very few opcodes and registers, although you can handle files (create, read, write, delete); given the limited memory available, the focus is mostly on these software agents called “exa” and the communication between them: it’s all about concurrency and synchronous messages, making the puzzles less straightforward than a classic assembly exercise and closer to CSP-style programming (like golang, so to speak). An highlight is the opcode REPL which allows something akin to a UNIX fork(), making possible to create recursive solutions instead of iterative ones.
As usual for these kind of games, you got leaderboards where you can score with different solutions (optimized for cpu cycles, code size and exa activity) and compare them against the world and your friends.
Very enjoyable. If you like programming, it's a must! If not, it's not harder than your average mid-hard puzzle game; give it a try if you like those.
The story and atmosphere are definitely captivating and work very well with the art style.
Unfortunately, the gameplay is not that great. Most puzzles don't have more than 1 different solutions. Although fun at first while discovering the different mechanics, it starts to feel more like a chore towards the end, writing increasingly long programs with the same few ideas.
The biggest issue is that you are very limited which makes many efficient solutions impossible and fun, parallelized solutions (which come very natural since exas run in parallel) are frustratingly over complicated or also impossible.
Not even the goals of the puzzles are fun: most are just about some nearly meaningless numbers and files

Perhaps the best Zachtronics programming game. TIS-100 is a close contender, but EXAPUNKS less constrained sandbox allows for more creativity in solving the puzzles.
The writing, art, and music really set the scene. Authentically nostalgic of the old hacker scene of the 90s.
Highly recommended, but note: You will probably only like this game if you enjoy programming for its own sake. Many of the problems would be straightforward to solve given any reasonable dev environment, but the tools you have at your disposal require you to exercise a lot of creative thought.
This game is everything I was looking for in a puzzle/programming game and more. It's so addicting that I just played for four hours straight until I literally could not anymore because my brain was so tired from the puzzles and I didn't even notice that it's long past my bedtime. It just OOZES cool, so much that I finally understand the slang "drip", and the game play is incredibly rewarding and satisfying.! 100% recommend!
By far one of the best puzzle games out there, especially if you have a passing interest in programming(though being an expert is absolutely not required to have fun here). The puzzles themselves are extremely well put together, gradually building on previous puzzles without getting a brick wall feeling. The music and art are superb as well, especially for this type of game, and the visualisation of the EXAs really helps with abstraction. Special note on the manuals, both of them are superbly well written and actually tie into the game's world!
Something I was not expecting from a programming puzzle game was a compelling story, but the chatroom dialogues and especially the main storyline was compelling until the end. Overall, if you have even a passing interest in programming or problem solving, buy this game immidiately.

А вот найти оптимальное решение, посоревноваться с другими игроками - вот это задача поистине головоломная. Но ведь никто не заставляет сидеть часами и экономить каждую команду и каждый такт.
Good game to learn assembly programming. One nice thing about the language is that it actually allows you to do easy multi-threading via the REPL instruction. In some sense you are almost programming a nondeterministic Turing Machine (albeit in a very small scale), which is often way easier than DFS/BFS in many cases and avoids recursion completely.

Kept in my library for a pretty long time after buying on sale, and honestly regret not playing it sooner. Its a good mix of challenging and fun. Not something that quickly becomes easy work, but also not bang-your-head-against-the-wall frustrating.

Not only a fantastic series of programming puzzles, but a clever and engaging recreation of a bygone era of tech-fetishization wrapped up in a gloriously cyberpunk aesthetic. If any of that sound remotely interesting then this game is worth the purchase.

Лучшая игра от Закроникс — говорю, как чувак из IT, знакомый с программированием на C — здесь просто отлично совмещена игровая подача с абстракциями из реальной разработки: форки процессов, параллельная передача данных, синхронизация. И самое главное — весь функционал доступен сразу, без сложностей, стоящих в жизни.
Чуток ограничивает наличие всего полутора регистров, иногда хочется чуть больше заюзать переменных.
Но это и плюс — все задачи решаемы на доступных ресурсах, не нужно быть программистом, чтобы пройти игру. Или нужно? =)
An amazing distillation of the fun parts of coding. I've never seen programming translated into a puzzle game quite so well as this; it gives you a lot of tools to work with, then lets you use whatever janky solutions you manage to come up with. (And I made some truly jank solutions, especially in the optional bonus levels). Highly recommended.

Excellent programming puzzle game! EXAPUNKS strikes a good balance between the more freeform optimization-centric gameplay and more constrained, puzzly gameplay. I also like the zine idea a lot, but alas, my printer was a bit too crummy to oblige...
Coding puzzles in true Zachtronics style, what's not to love?
As with all the Zachtronics games I've played and enjoyed, I get about 1/4 through and starts to get tough but it's a brainpower problem not a game problem, sometimes closing it and coming back later helps!
If you're into logic puzzle games and optimization, this is the game for you. Just completing the game was an incredibly rewarding experience, even knowing my solutions are mid af lol.
If EXA PUNKS sounds fun to you, it probably will be. It executes everything it try's to do very well. Each level is unique, and there are always multiple ways to solve. The difficulty curve is really good, it starts quite easy and ramps up at a really good pace so that your skill improves at a similar rate to the difficulty. There are a lot of little details that make this game extra special:
- It's never just "change these numbers around" it's instead, "rob this bank" or "change the highway road signs letters".
- little non-coding mini games thrown in throughout because why not?
- printable magazine that is from game world for immersion (and code reference)
- cute story that while not too crazy gives meaning for the projects
- ability to make your own games using game system
- optional pvp coding arena battles (idrk how to explain this lol)
And lot more little stuff that you would't expect, that adds to the whole thing.

So far liking this game a lot more than Zachtronics' Shenzhen I/O which is structured very similarly. I love the world building and the zines (which I've printed out and had fun cutting and assembling) and the references to San Francisco and the Bay Area are cool. The puzzles are challenging but not overly daunting, and the visualizer and interactivity elements when you're testing make solutions so easy to debug. I'm just thoroughly impressed at the polish of this game, and I love the soft modern art style. Sad Zachtronics studio has closed up but there's a huge library of their other games I'm looking forward to working through.

It's a cool puzzle game set in a cyberpunk world.
This game is incredible, if you like programming or logic puzzles this one is a must have. One of my favorites out of the zachtronics games.
This is by far the easiest of Zachtronics's assembly-ish programming games and I say that entirely because of the generous line limitations. On the other hand, the complexity of the algorithms it demands is also much higher than other games--including the dreaded sorting algorithm. Highly recommended.
I really like exapunks. It is very satisfying to send a horde of exas into a network to do my bidding. The game is well designed so the challenge sounds complicated, but then using a limited instruction set I sort it out. Then I am pleasantly surprised that all the complex processes going on in the network were designed by me.

I just copmpleted the first 4 tutorials and I can say that being a programmer helps, but since I do work with high level languages I was trown off by the fact you don't have loops, if bifurcation or even data structures.
you work with words, integer numbers and that's it. I spent like an hours figuring out a for loop and if statements using MARK, TEST and FJMP/TJMP.
This is how I imagine assambler languages to be.
I find myself going back to the #1 zine so often that maybe is a good idea to just print it out.
Great game for programmers, I think the game is going to fly over 90% of gamers's heads.
Played through the story of the game and found it fun
although the challenge isnt really programming, its more focused on data storage/retention as you only have two spots to store data on the EXAs with one getting replaced whenever you test a value (i.e. test x = 2)
I'd recommend it for programmers and non-programmers alike. However, I should mention that the game uses a PDF or a printed out manual that you'll want to use to reference while solving puzzles (it should open up in your default PDF viewer or web browser)

Never done assembly code, touched C++ like 8 years ago don't remember any of it.
Absolutely fantastic visual representation of programming. Makes it much easier to understand what you're doing. My only criticism is that the "zine" (The in game PDF that explains how to do stuff) isn't actually very good at explaining why you do things. HOW to, and WHY to, are different things. But if you aren't shy about looking up tips and guides you can create your own solutions once you understand how someone else came to theirs. The most spoiler free resource is the wiki.

The game is good
The game runs well on linux laptop with only 4gb ram and low end intel pentium N processor with built in graphics. I don't know anything about coding so the learning curve is steep, but I love the challenge. The look a and feel of the game is cool, great music. I love the zine it has a great nostalgic feel. Overall I'm very happy with this puzzle solver.
PDF or printables buttons dont do anything, so I cant figure out how to play the game. 0/10

Основна ігрова механіка полягає у створенні невеликих програм на спрощеній, унікальній версії асемблера. Звісно, це не повноцінний аналог мови для реального мікропроцесора — логіка тут значно спрощена, а кількість команд обмежена. Однак саме це робить гру доступною та дозволяє зосередитись на вирішенні головоломок, а не на зазубрюванні складних інструкцій.
На додачу до всього, гра має приємний та зрозумілий візуальний стиль, який не відволікає від процесу, а наявність сюжету дозволяє краще зануритися у самі задачі. Це чудовий вибір для тих, хто любить "ворушити мізками" або хоче у цікавій формі познайомитися з базовими принципами низькорівневого програмування.
Єдиним аспектом, що може стати на заваді для українського гравця, є відсутність у грі української мови. Втім, якщо сюжет для вас не є головним, ви зможете спокійно насолоджуватися ігровим процесом. This is more a caution than a non-recommendation
This is a PUZZLE which happens to use a programming-language to solve it BUT - like TIS and Shenzen before it - the instruction set/registers/execution model are limited to create 'challenge'
I like 'challenge' but I feel this one pushes that a-bit-far - I felt like I was trying to guess the program from the design of the puzzle instead of writing a program to solve the puzzle.
I suspect a non-programmer might enjoy this MORE than I did - it's certainly well presented and eminently playable but I just kept running into stuff which was clearly put there to push me into finding THEIR solution instead of my own - and I didn't enjoy that...
You might - but be aware this won't "teach programming" anymore than Spacechem didn't "teach Chemistry" :)
I remember printing the ZINES at school taking comp sci course, and I played EXAPUNKS to the last level HACKED [spoiler] my BRAIN [/spoiler], and it was GOOD CODE, but now working as software dev, no one cares about GOOD CODE (clarify: that's not a bad thing, sometimes you just can't), so the only place where it matters is EXAPUNKS, so by logic EXAPUNKS requires GOOD CODE
great game, a puzzle game made for programmers. even if you get stuck, you can skip levels so its not that bad. also requires genuine thinking and problem solving skills, so i like it.

On a parfois l'impression de travailler et non de jouer
On apprend l'assembleur mais on ne nous le dit pas et on ne nous propose pas de transférer ces compétences vers le monde réel.
Conclusion: Un pur produit Zachtronics qui parlera en particulier aux informaticiens trentenaires. Demande au joueur de s'impliquer mais au bout du compte on en ressort en ayant appris des choses :)

I believe that even if you're not a programmer, the game has a decent difficulty curve and good tutorials.
thank you tom scrying for introducing me to zachtronics . if you don't already like programming there's only about a 1/6 you'll like this game but that 1/6th is rather scrumptious

Very good puzzle game. Programmin is fairly easy, but since it's so simplified it's at times somewhat frustrating.
