Haven't seen a game so well documented in a very very long time. Comprehensive tutorials extremely well done. Love space sims, give it a try.

A very good space simulator, with a heavy emphasis on its simulator aspects.
The game doesn't hold your hand and lets you choose how to play the game, as long as it's within the game's mechanics. Another positive feature of the game is its unforgivable nature. The main point of this game's economy and exploration imo is preplanning and analysis of what you are going to do and how you do it. Plus, the ship's customization is quite detailed, yet simple at the same time. Want better defenses?- slap some upgraded systems on (if you have enough money and hull points). Wanna haul more cargo? - add bigger cargo bays, which in early game will require you to sacrifice some other systems, like extra seats for passengers or defense / offense systems.
Though with all of this, it may have its flaws. For some players it may be overwhelming, since it uses some of the game mechanics I haven't seen before implemented in games. One of them would be fuel economy. You have a very tight and limited fuel tank, so you need to preplan the rout and use inertia to travel with as little fuel burned as possible. There's more deep and interesting new ways of resource gathering and merchandise inside the game economy, the dev was kind enough to explain some of them on his YouTube channel (which I would recommend watching, if you wish to have an easier time with your start at playing the game or understanding some of its systems easier, and more deeply, without sitting through the tutorial).
So overall - this game a good chilling game with unforgivable resource managment, which might not be for everyone. Lore side it might fall a bit dry, which is a good opportunity for player to create their own, if you're up for it. Treat this game as a simulator heavy experience and you'll see game shine.
This game is a really good space SIM that has a lot of attention to detail for the sake of comfort to the player... For another thing its done in such a manner that the PC Game is like a more realistic form of spacecraft yet the game still has the kind of feel that a person would really enjoy it.
i bought this game a long time ago and now that i want to play it it says i need a product key i have no idea where that is.
Update: I did what the developer told me to do and now it works. this game is pretty good. you cant get out of your ship but thats ok. you can do a lot of things you can be a miner, mercenary, or just a delivery guy.

This is clearly a labor of love game and highly underrated. It deserves more exposure and praise, as it's a great example of what competent developers can accomplish with a minimal budget and a long term hobby. Even though I've been playing it on and off because of, well... life I guess, it's one of those games I keep going back to.

This game is a unique blend of Starlancer and Freespace I and II while including a charm of the older 1999 and onward up to about the year Mechwarrior 4 Vengence was released,, developed and created by a passionate developer, this game deserves more exposure than it has.
Yes the game has a learning curve, but it plays like a Space-sim than it does play like a game, the games interaction is versatile and if you are after something unique while supporting a passionate developer then look no further.
I love this game more than I can express.

Yes, this is a cool game. The idea that you can fly into the atmosphere, and land at assorted docking locations is quite cool. Well worth it, please more!

way way to much to learn sensory overload people say this is better then elite but let me tell you, at least elite does not shove everything in your face and expect you to do it. Would not suggest this game.
DCS but in space. Excellent flight mechanics and definitely not an arcade shooter. Lots to learn and a very immersive cockpit with all the controls and readouts. Great in VR as well and has head tracking. Amazing for its age. Would love to see it on a new games engine with updated graphics though.

It has good physics but the world is very boring. No dialogue no Dynamics that change anything that i can see. I would not recommend in 2025 but for what i got out it its okay.

It takes some time to get used to and you DON'T need a joystick, you can play it with mouse/keyboard perfectly fine. Once you get the hang of the mechanics of the game; outfitting your ship, accepting contracts, completing them properly, you'll get hooked.
Also there's just something special about a game (priced as modestly as this one especially) where you can explore a HUGE galaxy and enter the atmosphere/land on just about every freaking planet. My only gripe is that I wish there was a procedural generation option of your galaxy any time you start a new career.

This game is a joy to play. A joy to fly around in. With IDS switched completely off (no Flight Assist at all) it is an extremely fun challenge too. If you like Newtonian flight with NO SPEED LIMITS, 6DOF dogfighting combat, trading, mining, exploring, racing, base building and so much more, I can't explain how much fun I'm having in this game.
One piece of advice: DO THE TRAINING. It is not too long and gets you hyped for the game, but without it, the game is too hard. Mercenary Spacecraft, prepare to launch!
EDIT after 50 hours: Oh my gosh, there is SO MUCH to this game. Not only is the flight model the best in any spaceflight simulation I've played, but there is a whole simulated economy, a galactic war and faction storylines, you can build stations and cities and set up new trade routes, explore the vast reaches of unexplored space and claim your riches, you can do all sorts of interesting varied missions which have you being everything from a delivery boy, to a combat pilot, to a bounty hunter, to a racer, to a space janitor (all where the sole focus is on flying your ship!) You can land on planets, walk around on them with a Terrain Walker vehicle.
The other night I refuelled a stranded ship and in the distance saw beautiful lights. I flew toward them, and was engulfed in an Aurora Borealis, and flew into its centre. The Borealis interfered with my systems and I lost scanning, so I blasted up into space and into orbit, where I floated for a while as the planet beneath me turned. This is a real, living, too-scale Newtonian Universe. You can fly close to stars, and through a light-filter, see their surface. You can find wondrous things in the depths of space.
The map system and UI are all excellent also (be careful, there's no dedicated "undock" button and you have to stay on inventory screen for tractor beam to stay attached, but it's ok to float in stations with no tractor beam, just don't do it at cities.) You can build different ships out of different parts, even arrange the parts and paint your ship to make it truly unique, you can experiment with and modify weapons, you can space mine (most fun space mining in any game I've ever played, in fact, this is the only game I like space mining in: you have to keep your ship moving.) And you can fly in Newtonian Physics with no inertial dampening, or with plenty of computer assistance, even an autopilot! There's tons of equipment and modules for your ship, there's just so much to this game, I will be playing forever!
It's like an indie mix of Elite, X, and FreeSpace with a 90's sci-fi B movie vibe. Highly recommend it if you like space sims.

A great space sim!
A beautiful space sim. The Newtonian physics of space flight in this game is a different take on space flight than most space sims I've played.
Try to demo first, don't spend all of your refundable time in the tutorial like I did, to find out you hate the game.
I literally spent hours and hours on this tutorial and got in to combat with the drones and found out I suck at this type of flying and combat and it really ruined my bad.
You can't turn off camera shake, so when you are getting pelted your view shakes all over the place making it impossible to hit the ship you are targeting.
I love space games, might try it some more, but so far I am not having any fun at all, and feel like I wasted my day.
Una especie X (me refiero a la saga de juegos,X, X2, X3, X Rebirth, X4...) pero con la posibilidad de jugar online con otros jugadores (multiplayer) en servidores publicos o privados (con gente o solo con amigos) Al igual que en X, puedes construir tus propias estaciones e incluso ciudades, y no son simplemente algo útil para el propio jugador, sino que toda su facción (elegida al inicio, entre 2 facciones antagónicas) se beneficia de ella y le ayuda a expandirse y conquistar sectores a la facción rival.
En general puede que algo mas simple que los "X" en cuanto a la gestión macro, y mas complejo en cuanto a los detalles técnicos y pilotaje de la propia nave. No es que resulte complicado pilotar, sino simplemente que tiene muchísimos datos y detalles sobre como manejarla, como por ejemplo el desplazamiento por inercia, o un combate mas complejo donde los misiles son extremadamente letales y es necesario evadirlos usando contramedidas e incluso enfriando la nave apagando motores. Hasta que entendí ciertas cosas, mis primeros combates fueron frustrantes. Simplemente hay que cambiar el chip respecto a otros juegos y combatir de una forma mas "técnica", sin lanzarse de cabeza cargando de frente.
Mencionar también la enorme cantidad controles que ofrece. La mayoría igual son cosas que no se usan nunca, o son accesos directos a elementos que puedes acceder desde otros menús, pero la cantidad posible de controles para "automatizar" las cosas da una idea del nivel de detalle que se le ha puesto al juego. Me las he apañado para configurar controles funcionales tanto para un mando tipo Xbox como para un Hotas, pero para navegar los menús resulta mas práctico seguir usando el ratón.
En Steam Deck funciona bien, aunque las letras son pequeñas y puede costar leer ciertas cosas. El trackpad sirve bien para hacer de ratón y usar los menús. La única pega (que quizá sea solucionable) es que la partida guardada no se sincroniza entre el Deck y el PC, pero quizá sea un error puntual o algo subsanable que no he investigado todavía.
A algunos quizá les resulte mas familiar el Elite Dangerous, en ese caso, puede decirse que es "parecido" pero mas complejo en tanto que te permite crear toda una flota a la que dar ordenes, y ayudar a tu facción a conquistar el universo conocido (en lugar de ser un único piloto con un impacto mas bien nulo sobre el gran esquema de las cosas)
Permite entrar en cualquier planeta sin transiciones, a lo No Man´s Sky. Igualmente te permite dedicarte a lo que te de la gana: exploración, combate, compraventa de mercancias, transporte...
A destacar también la personalización de la nave. En lugar de comprar naves prediseñadas, podemos hacerlas "por piezas" e incluso esas piezas admiten cierta personalización sobre sí mismas.
En general un juego impresionante para un único desarrollador. El único punto flojo son los gráficos, algo anticuados ya, pero si puedes pasar esto por alto (tampoco son super terribles) es un sim espacial muy completo. La posibilidad de multijugador es lo que en mi opinión le falla a la serie X, y este juego cumple con ello. Igualmente, si tomamos como referencia el Elite Dangerous, este juego le añade la posibilidad de tener no solo tu nave, sino toda una flota siguiendo tus órdenes, además de permitirte construir tus propias estaciones, bases, e impactar en el universo de juego haciendo prevalecer a la facción de tu elección mediante tus acciones.
Lo recomiendo, pero ojo, no es ningún arcade, si buscas algo mas sencillo (mas arcade) recomiendo juegos como Rebel Galaxy, Everspace 2, o Starpoint Gemini 2 / Starpoint Warlords.

First off I would have to say, I've found this game pretty addictive, racking up about 50 Hours in my first week. Not nearly enough to be an expert, but enough for a reasonably informed review.
Richard Douglas'score is excellent and I have downloaded it and just put it on in the background with some screenshots when I am chilling out. It's really that good.
Evochron is just amazing value for it's small file size, it competes well with much larger and more expensive offerings, like X4 quite well IMHO. I can confidently say Technical support is excellent. While I had no troubles getting the game to work on my tower; I ran into some difficulty with my laptop. Turned out that there as a small error being generated between my updated Razor Mouse Driver, and an old config file. A problem that this app was sensitive too. Anyhow it ultimately was not caused by the game, but The developer was very prompt and helpful in helping me track down the bug.
The Default Start is to begin as a Mercenary Pilot, Which I think is a left over from the games last iteration as Evochron Mercenary. As Flying and Navigating systems has some learning curve, I would suggest starting as a Miner/Trader, it will give you and opportunity to learn the controls, without being Harassed by Enemies. My current start is as an Independent, and as such I have not been attacked at all; so if your looking for a little more action you might pick Federation or Alliance; I don't think it will make any difference besides who attacks you.
Evochron employs more keybindings than any other game I have ever played and thats a good few. Nearly every Key has a bind, and while most are just the key, a few are Alt Keyed. This is not a huge problem there is a map online that you can download and personalize; The problem is a fair number of keys can get you in a little trouble, M-Mouse Look if accidentally pressed will cut out your ability to control your spacecraft without knowing why, fortunately I found a thread addressing this problem. Obviously your going to want rebind some of these keys to a Shift or Alt, as a safety measure. I think a Gaming mouse is a huge help here too, as I personally bound my Primary Weapons to a side button on my Razor Mouse, and my left mouse button to select target in gun-site, Just a personal choice. Anyhow I think your going to want to get in a few hours flying, before your finalize your key binds.
The Skyscapes are beautiful and the Stations and ships well executed if you love space games, you wont be bored. At the very start mining is your very best way to make money, but it soon enough will become a little tedious, so you'll want to do some trading; which while normally not nearly as profitable will get you out of the back yard. Teach you the Plotting, Hyperspace system, and allow you to check out other systems and again the game art, which very good. Landing Dirtside is a challenge the first time or two, but if you come in slow about 500Mps and follow your beacons, you'll be acing that in no time.
Evochron is not the product of a large studio, but of one Dev. So sometimes you might have to work around a small glitch. I was running from Talison to Sapphire for the 20th time; when the pathing bugged and I kept crashing into the gateway and crashing the app. On the 4th Try I just hand flew the ship to a position directly in front of the mouth of the gate and took it through and went autopilot from there without further trouble. 10 hours Later and probably as many runs to Sapphire and have not seen the bug again. Anyhow any Indie project is going to have its needles in the haystack, but overall Evochron Legacy is more that worth them. As a long time X4 Player who just got sick to death of playing savior of the Universe and that games buggy AI; Legacy fits me like a glove, it truly is the sandbox X4 claims to be and as I am happiest in game flying about in a single seater with no one to answer to but myself. If that sounds good to you too, try this game. It does have a demo, and I'm sure you'll buy it in no time.
Can Not wait too see if the devs produce a next one.

my basic ship i was able to upgrade to a different one for 5k
then i removed from that a few things i did not want so i could hold more.
Now my basic ship can hold twice as much and has become more of a scavanger/miner.
Bit of a step learning curve to it but through watching youtube vids and from what i know it seems rather simple to pick up and play.
Learn as you go.
The training tutorial my brain was at melting stage after the basic's would suggest in the next game making it basic to advance to pro flying.

The Evochron games have a long and respectable history. I have been playing them since 2010 when they were already well established.
Evochron Legacy SE itself has some history to it - released in 2016 and continuously updated since then, it is a real true-to-it's roots continuation of, well... the Evochron legacy.
I first started with these games when there was a deficit of space games, by space game I mean more than just a series of connected rooms with a sky-box (The X-series, I'm looking at you). Evochron was one of the very few that tried to give as realistic as possible take on the fight/trade/mine open space sandbox, and to my mind is one of the most successful realisations of that. Even now 8 years after it's release and having been continuously updated since then, Evochron stands alone, in a good way.
There are going to be inevitable comparisons with games like Elite Dangerous, especially as Evochron Legacy has multiplayer, but I think these are apples to oranges comparisons.
When I first got Evochron in 2010 I was hoping for something to scratch a space-game itch I developed playing the original Elite on the BBC and to be honest I was a bit disappointed. But over time I learned that, dare I say it, Evochron was better.
I had some hope when I backed Elite Dangerous during kick-starter that it was going to be the space game for me, but unfortunately is has developed into just another cookie-cutter community oriented MMO with a space theme. Maybe it's good it what it is, but it has to my mind moved beyond the space game genre, and this is true of so many 'space' games these days.
Evochron remains a true space game. I would say that It isn't the only one, there are a few keeping up the hopes of us space gamers. Flight of Nova, REEntry and Orbiter-sim are great for realism, maybe even Rogue System is getting some new life breathed into it, however, my go-to space game remains Evochron.
Really if you are into space games and you haven't tried it you probably should. It isn't DCS in space, it does aim for as much enjoyable realism as possible and there is a learning curve, get past that and you might just be reminded why you wanted to play a space game in the first place.
I am very glad the Evochron games exist and are still being worked on by the dev.
Long may that be the case.

My comments about the X-series and Elite dangerous are to provide gameplay comparison with this game only it is not a comment on the quality of those games which I have enjoyed for what they are.
Unfortunately I can't give a proper review as the game errors at launch with the error message "Error: Surface Size 3440x1440 in main.agc at line 198". I am assuming modern resolutions are not supported. Spent some time on the forum looking for a solution and I found nothing. Based on this I certainly can't recommend the game, which is a real shame. If I get it running I will look again and provide a more meaningful review.
Amazing game. ONE MAN developed this by himself, and its been in development/improving since the days of DOS.
I havent played that much of it because its gigantic and a bit overwhelming, but it is absolutely worth the time and money.
Heck, just buy it to support this man's passion and hard work, as a middle finger to the dying/decaying AAA industry who lost their passion long ago.
Olha o jogo não e nada amigável e nem procura isso , interface muito poluída com um tutorial complexo que deixa algumas mecânicas que deveriam ser básica e simples totalmente complexas ao ponto de ser necessário olhar tutoriais de video na internet, o desenvolvedor visivelmente focou em um nicho de publico e não vai mudar isso, então meu conselho se você quer muito jogar esse game se prepare para horas de estudo.
I can see what it's trying to achieve. And it's admirable when a dev has a vision and sticks to it.
I just don't personally think that vision resulted in a fun game for most people. It's a realistic and believable representation of what a sci fi space travel setting would be like. The thing is, realistic space is quite a boring thing. The space setting itself invokes mystery and awe, but it needs a little bit of artistry to actually appeal to the fantasy of space discovery. Otherwise you just end up simulating the same kinds of problems you have in the real world and ending with a space-themed excel spreadsheet instead of a space adventure.
I do know, however, that a lot of people like management games and simulations. So this will still be a postitive recommendation - just make sure this is exactly the type of game you want.

Started the tutorial. Wow, I love Elite dangerous, but that game, wow ! Can be run by almost any computer, is beautiful, i love piloting the ship, etc.
Also, my actual pc controller works ! (Not Xbox One, or PS3. normal PC controller, interpreted as xbox 360 one).

Unlike other such space games, the map is based on some convoluted coordinates system. This means that any time you're told where to go, it's some number combination that you can't click on but have to manually figure out. Apparently, automatic map hotlinks and navigational computers don't exist in this universe...

It's the best space sim ive played but I haven't tried out Elite Dangerous yet so far. I love this one its got some good difficulties to deal with. It's easier with a joystick setup.

Evochron Legacy is a single- or multiplayer sandbox iteration of the Arvoch/Starwraith franchise with a focus on PvP and conflict between the two superpowers. As a fundation it continues and expands on the great simulation aspects of earlier games and thus allows inertia battles and space combat only slightly below games like Elite:Dangerous and far above nearly all arcade space shooters.
Despite its MO-matchup the game relies on third party servers to host for this and some of these do explicitly discourage to outright forbid the PvP this game is designed around. The lack of an official server with an anything goes 24/7 guarantee is a slight limit to the game.
It does regularly get updates, small new improvements and got a major overhaul of the conquest and battle mechanics due to direct saving being a major quality of life change. This has given new life to the singleplayer aspect of the great war. This also prevents the "base respawn" bug of old in singleplayer which forced players to destroy the same enemy base twice.
There are a few things questionable in this release. For one the story even though being multifactional feels heavily focused on being done with the Alliance (based on area and progress), the push of the entire game centuries later to avoid problems with the Arvoch series leads to a "void century" problem and the technology seems to be frozen apart of the new jumpcaster wormhole technology finally on par with the Vonari from its first war centuries later.
This game is for those that enjoy space trucking, inertia battles outside of Elite:Dangerous and commanding a small battle fleet. It is also a decent game for explorers, although the things to explore are limited in their RNG value beyond the handplaced few wonders. It is definetly not friendly to completionists; the achievements are long and grindy, stay clear!
This game has my rating of fi-lay it. Play the faction war once, fight the Vonari back from a sector and build a small economic area. Maybe find your true love system and join one of the two community owned servers for a time.
Story & Presentation: 5/10
The story is told through basic text narration quests with limited ingame animations or sequences. Quest targets are spawned in as needed and both campaigns beyond the early stage are effectively the same. This leads to the Alliance focused quest being a bit harder for Federation players. Until a while ago the Federation even when played was colored in red, showing them as the enemy of the Empire of Sol in green. This has been changed, but it did give a further feeling of the double-faction gameplay being secondary to the game's storyline.
With the story set centuries after the Dissolution war after the Mercenaries era and few wrecks telling the story back to barely one century, this game suffers a major "void century" event. While the huge genocidal war between the powers is used to explain most losses in colonies and stations, some are actually explained ingame as attacks of opportunity of the returned Vonari on the weakened powers. This is a small plus in a sea of uncertainty about what happened. Overall the player has to guess and puzzle a lot of events leading up to the "Atlas Incident".
Sadly none of the RNG systems can contain gas giants or nebula which is a major failure of the system generation. Further anomalies are handplaced in the galaxy and few if any at all. This leads to basic 1-5 planets around a sun with 1-2 asteroids. Sometimes they merge to supercluster systems up to six suns (see Eridanus in the wiki), but that is purely by chance. There are no RNG stations or settlements to discover in the void, just empty dead space.
Gameplay & Mechanics: 8/10
The gameplay already had a solid core as a space simulation with long standing inertia combat in the series and fleet management. Additional the base building was heavily expanded and atmospheric flights were given a decent overhaul. Due to recent changes to rewards for base building and fair income sources from said bases, the gameplay has become less of a diamond mine grindfest to sell to high-tech and a bit more freeform again.
The true lack of this game is the non-existent AI progress of station building/exploration/warfare. The AI won't do anything without the player and there are only two 24/7 servers online to have other players influence anything for you.
The basic simulation of economic growth or warfare % changes will only spawn some invasions or hostiles even in deep held territory like Sierra of the Federation dropping to ALC 30% control... for no reason. It is based to deactivate the faction control drift, it has more annoyance than consequences, the AI won't wage this war. Do it yourself.
The inactivity of the AI is the main problem of the game. It is a game tailored around being an MO, without an official server.
Visuals & Atmosphere: 7/10
The old graphics help this game run on older systems, but the planets show little visual splendor beyond single events like an aurora borealis or some nice light-locked planets in equidistance to two suns on each side. Planets will use the lightbox of the closest star otherwise, leading to 15 and 16 distance suns only being lit from the 15.
A nice touch of the game is the use of real skyboxes. Although seeing Orion in the sky while being in a star of Orion is a bit weird. Nearby objects like planets and nebula are visible for a few sectors, suns can be seen for around 15 sectors as small light dots foreign to the skybox.
Flying over planets has a small initial charm, but due to the ever same tress being found as plants and the same bird-like creatures in the sky, after a few planets this novelty wears off. Overall the planet topography has much similarities to early No Man's Sky with basic topography either being filled with a water level or not. It's an okay experience, but nothing for an instagram story aside of the aurora borealis.
Achievements:
Not in the actual evaluation but important to note, both the military medal (grinding 1000 missions for the military or in Vonari zones) and the honor medal (getting 10000 points overall) are not friendly, entertaining or supporting completionists. Completing this game takes at the least 300-400 hours. Before the points and income for station building it would be a horrifying 10000 mission grind. Nowadays it is the building of 500 stations and waiting a few hours for 3-4 billion credits. It's not worth it. As a completionist, skip this game, seriously.

This game is an utter labor of love that is capable of standing toe to toe with the big guys. It's all the fun of Elite Dangerous but with far more soul.

+ There is an impressive amount of technical detail and variety for a game created by what I assume is a single developer.
- It is a completely soulless lifeless meaningless gameworld. There are no characters. No real stories. Feels like the player is the only human being in a world populated with nameless mindless machines. Imagine Elite Dangerous on a much lower budget - with all the same flaws but without the audio-visual fidelity.
Personally, I just can't get past lackluster worldbuilding in a space opera setting. Every activity in the game seems meaningless to me. And the developer has made no effort at improving this side of the game despite years of updates. So clearly this is not going to change.
A fantastic space sim with just about everything you could want - Created by one man with an amazing commitment to creating the best possible game.
It honestly does have everything - great space combat, full Newtonian physics, really unparalleled depth and customizability, base building, fleet building, complete ship customization, quests, huge areas of space to explore and exploit. Want to fly inside an asteroid cave and find hidden treasure - it's in there. Seamless no-load-screen spaceflight around the galaxy, fly through a planet's atmosphere, and land anywhere you like or combat other ships in the atmosphere? Yep. Single player, multiplayer, dedicated server? Check. Rovers? Yep.
With all that, what really impresses me the most though is Vice, the one-man dev team who has been working to perfect a single game for more years than you would believe. He really listens to the community and genuinely cares about providing the best game experience possible.
So, considering everything you get, and the ridiculously low price for it, there is no excuse for not buying Evochron Legacy. You'll be glad you did!

The specific of 0-G fights and flights is awesome. Most if not known space games are ignoring most if not all specifics, limiting speed and ignoring inertia, this one is quire good. Pity that maneuvering in the gravity field of the planets or in the atmosphere looks so far quite strange - either I didn't get it yet or is is arcade one. Hope the game will continue. It's as it is quire good, and with reasonable G-force mechanics and better object graphics would be a space sim dream.
It's good that this game still gets upgrades but it's basically unplayable due to the appalling interface and control system.

Burned on Elite, want something with totally different game design principles, and don't mind relearning space flight all over again? Evochron Legacy might scratch that itch if you can get over its numerous shortcomings due to being a one man dev team (albeit very skilled one man dev team). He has an unapologetic vision of what he wants in a space flight sim, but many of those decisions may confuse and frustrate you.
And if you haven't played Elite... well, Elite costs less.

I really wanted to like this game after becoming too frustrated with Elite and Frontier. Unfortunately, playing it feels even more of a chore in different ways. This game was made by one person and their decades of experience in crafting a game experience shows... it's just even more niche in my opinion. I'm going to draw many comparisons to Elite below since that's where most people are going to be coming from.
- [b]Built with quality of life in mind.[/b] Elite QoL is trash. It sticks to its sim roots, both good and bad, and does not respect your time at all (engineering, anyone?). Evochron has a ton of QoL and "get to the point" gameplay decisions. With the right amount of material, you could even go across the entire universe in Evochron (using jump casters) in under an hour. Like a location, but there's no space station to dock and sell at? Build your own (even if the build system is fairly simple).
- [b]Lack of incentive to manually fly and the biggest Evochron sin.[/b] In Elite, to do basically anything you have to fly there manually. Supercruise or local space, they're still both generally manual flight short of using supercruise assist for rapid deceleration. In Evochron, the objective is to manually fly [u][i]as little as possible[/i][/u]: it's so slow compared to using your warp drive/autopilot and almost everything is on the galactic plane... you can just jump straight into most jump gates/stations barely touching the controls for minutes at a time, only bothering to manually fly to/from planets. Not much of a flight sim there if it incentivizes not actually flying.
- [b]Amount and variety of content.[/b] Elite has an unfair advantage here due to development team size. Even in Elite, there's enough variety to warrant traveling for months across the galaxy to see cool things. There are enough mission types, activities, and ships to keep you from starting to get bored for at least 100 hours (or 1000s for some people). In Evochron, there are a decent variety of mission types (arguably more interesting than Elite, but both games are lacking in areas), but most are extremely simplistic and not worth the time whatsoever. There are many ships (frames) in Evochron and the ship customization sounded REALLY fun at first... but you can figure out all of it within 5 minutes and realize how limited it is from a functional standpoint (lots of visual customization though!); you get ~5 module choices, two of which are 15-20 options on a completely linear scale, one which is 5-6 options on a linear scale, and two others are basically a 'passive skill' choice from five options. That's it.
- [b]Owning a fleet of ships... or actually just a bunch of templates.[/b] The Hanger system is [i]weird[/i] in Evochron and most players will not like it at all. In Elite, you can own as many ships as you want, specced and kitted out as you please. In Evochron, the dev goes extremely out of their way to make this as inconvenient and useless as possible. Instead of buying/storing ships, you save ship configuration "templates," sell your whole ship, buy a new one, and hope all of your old optional components (e.g. weapons) fit or else you have to sell them. If you want your old ship back, you just go into the shipyard and load the template... unless the station you're at doesn't sell that ship frame, or you're at a military carrier and it only sells military frames. It just adds this extra layer of micromanagement and does not feel fun since you're often fighting the system to get what you want done. It ultimately IS a time save if all you care about is moving up to the best ships since you sell old ships, but it lacks all of the satisfaction you get from owning a fleet. To be fair, you CAN store ships... but it clones your current ship for the full cost... what??? Why not just store the ship when you buy a new one???
- [b]Sound in space doesn't exist... but it should in games.[/b] Another objectively unfair comparison to Elite. Elite's sound design is some of the best in video games period. It adds so much weight and feedback to flight. The sound design in Evochron is... weak. It just doesn't give any real feedback in the same way. Every ship and thruster sounds the same from my experience. Weapon sounds are perfectly acceptable. This is by far the most unfair comparison on this list, but it still needed to be mentioned.
- [b]Realistic flight models aren't always more fun.[/b] A bit of a controversial opinion, but I feel most players will enjoy an Elite-like flight model more. Evochron is far and above more realistic. It is true Newtonian (or close enough). In Elite, not only does it use WW2-style physics for turning, but if you boost and turn off flight assist you will slow down after the boost... not even remotely realistic. No such thing here for Evochron. There is a hard internal cap on speed I believe, but you will never reasonably hit it. So why is Elite more fun? Trying to fly anything in Evochron feels like a leaf in the wind, even after 15 hours (mostly due to lack of Elite-style instant boost). The lacking sound design compared to Elite also doesn't help. It feels far more fun to fly when the sound design compliments what's happening and gives you feedback.
- [b]Exploration is weak when the universe is static.[/b] The universe in Evochron is much smaller than Elite... both a good and bad thing depending on who you ask. However, Elite's galaxy (or at least within each system) is in constant realistic motion in a 3-D space. Evochron is also technically 3-D, but everything is highly concentrated around the galactic ecliptic (almost everything is exactly on it). Objects in Evochron space also don't move. The map and exploration feels much closer to the X series than Elite. Due to the lack of variety mentioned above, there's also very little reason to explore in Evochron. Sure... you could establish new trade routes by building stations, colonize more of uncharted space, or discover cool looking things... but why? There's no reason to do any of it. Other than 2-3 necessary secrets off the beaten path for progression, it's much easier to do everything in charted space. However, one pro for Evochron is fully atmospheric planets with weather, water, sparse vegetation, and even aurora... way more interesting than Elite's planets.
- [b]Does it run on a toaster?[/b] The one thing I will not complain about is the visual fidelity of the game. One man show, remember? The dev has maintained their visual style for years (decades, really) and it has given the entire series an identity. I actually like it quite a bit despite the overall lower quality (the planet accretion disk textures though...). But one major negative is the game's optimization which I believe is more of a limitation of the game engine rather than lack of dev skill. In short, on my rig (13600k, RTX 3080 at 1440p/144fps), Elite on high/ultra settings runs far better than Evochron on high settings. It's very rare for me to get frame drops in Elite and not be able to see where the bottleneck is based on sensor readouts (excluding some obvious Odyssey content). In Evochron, I'll drop frames with the GPU usage under 30%, CPU usage under 30% (both entire package and max single core usage), plenty of fast RAM available, and a good NVMe SSD. I saw similar performance issues with a completely different system as well (6700k, GTX 1080 at 1080p).
If they made the ships HUD's look cooler and upgraded the graphics this would be a triple A space game. How this game has not been posted on the front page of steam and noticed is beyond me given its depth.
After playing Evochron Mercenary for quite a few years, I made the jump to Evochron Legacy and have not regretted the switch at all. The graphics are fantastic, the game is very immersive. While some mechanics remain from previous, there has been new features that really enhance the game. It still reminds me of a 3D "TradeWars" style game where we can mine and sell back to the station, rinse and repeat. This is a space game that both my wife and I enjoy playing, the design is perfect, the mechanics easy to understand, and the sounds and music add to the immersion.

Nifty indie space game, that still recieves constant updates and improvements. Getting to the point where you can reliably fly the ship is tricky, but very fun once you got the hang of it. Even after many hours of playing there are many secrets left to discover.
I must confess, this game intimidates me. It's like a Faberge egg or a Rembrandt, it's far too delicate a masterwork to touch.
What's stunning is that this single dev made a game that's bigger than Star Citizen, and crammed it down into under 1gb. And it has VR support.

This is an amazing game. There is an immersive story that remains open world. Prepare to spend real-time as a pilot of your own spacecraft. It will take a learning curve to control the ship and embark on the adventures that await. The genius developer gets kudos for everything and it's impressive from it's scale to it's details.

I bought this a year or so ago, took one look at the tutorial and was way to lazy to learn and got a refund. I decided I'd give it another go after getting bored with the other games I usually play. I must admit this is a gem and I think there's lots of fun to be had. The tutorial is great but I made the mistake of saying give it all and wow is it long. Despite the lessons, I was still struggling to work out how to go about things so checked youtube, Problem is, most of the advice is quite old and the interface seems to have had some changes, so they weren't much help. Six hours in and sussed out how to mine and starting to make some decent money. It looks like a grind but so what? It's a great learning curve which is enjoyable, so I think this will get a lot of time from me. Congrats to the developer, So much work has gone into this from one person and it deserves a big thumbs up. Will add to the review as I go along if needed,
Update - now I know what I'm doing, I can honestly say this is a fantastic game. Some reviews said there was nothing to do but mine for metals, but that is way off. There are plenty of missions where you can earn good money for a few jumps between sectors, military missions, rescue etc. I stopped mining after about 10 hours in and now have earned enough for the best ship in the game with top tier equipment and I even have my own station. I'm now getting into fighting and exploring and I'm loving it. I'd recommend being in one of the factions to make it more interesting than independent. Well worth £20! Buy it!

I do recommend the single player if you're into deep, complicated space sims that give you a high level of control once you get used to all the functions. It runs well, the controls are fine on M&K, and it's generally a good experience if you like these types of games.
Sadly, if you have any intention of playing the multiplayer, you probably just shouldn't. It feels like the alpha of a multiplayer mod for a decade old game. Missions and station markets are unsynced, for example. With how this multiplayer is implemented, I'd rather it have remained singleplayer.
It reminds me of X3 in a way except slightly less complicated (notice how I said slightly), but I was kind of disappointed to hear that I couldn't fly or even control/command larger vessels. For that reason, this game is personally not my cup of tea, but I can definitely see it being someone else's. You get to build bases afterall and do pretty much everything that you'd expect out of a space sim (except fly ships bigger than a heavy fighter/gunship.)

Buy this rather than Evochron Mercenary -- BUT watch the computer requirements carefully, especially the fact that it requires a certain amount of dedicated GRAM (on the video card itself). I had to buy a new computer to get this to work.
My overwhelming feeling as I play the game is that I am playing Evochron Mercenary again.
Of course there are improvements.
I think the tutorial is much better.
I think the planets are more interesting and detailed.
But searching the web to find difference between the two didn't turn up much.
I may change this review as I play more.
When I went back to play Evochron Mercenary again, it seemed quite primitive by comparison. Evochron Legacy may be essentially the same game but it is a big change.

HOW TO DOCK IN STATIONS LIKE A PRO
1. Right ctrl to align with the galactic ecliptic
2. Turn your ship to one of the blue arrow markers on your compass.
3. Switch to inertial mode (Spacebar)
4. F8 to jump
Result: glide effortlessly right on through the station entrance, you’re automatically stopped and docked at the center post. All in a few seconds!
This game gets a hard recommend from me. Lots of reasons why.
There are very few full-featured VR+HOTAS capable space sims out there. The most obvious alternative is Elite Dangerous, which I played for over 250 hours, and would've happily continued playing had the devs of Elite not put VR on life support. Unfortunately over my two years with Elite and it's updates, performance in VR had gotten worse to the point where I was no longer having fun in game and instead constantly fighting optimization issues despite having upgraded to an RTX 3070 during that time. In addition, it was clear they had no intention of supporting VR for the new content they were introducing. And at 250 hours in, new content was sorely needed.
It was time to find something new. A really bitter pill to swallow as over the pandemic I LIVED inside my ship, I had become so incredibly attached to my amazing time with Elite in VR. With Star Citizen lacking VR support (and just general content) I really didn't think I would ever experience anything quite like Elite in VR again. I looked and searched for something which would engross me in the same way Elite did in the beginning, but couldn't find what I was looking for, and my HOTAS and Headset went into the cupboard and began collecting dust.
And then, through sheer chance, I find this game nearly 2 years later while randomly browsing steam. How the ♥♥♥♥ did I miss this game before? On paper this game had it all, VR support, HOTAS support, and the full space sim experience. Comparisons to Elite were rife on forums and reviews the internet over. This was it! It was time to dive in.
But before I discuss what makes Evochron great, a special mention needs to be called out to it's developer who frankly has given me one of the best customer service experiences I have ever encountered. Without boring with the details, I had a simple tracking issue in VR which prevented me from playing without extreme motion sickness - it required a game update to fix. A mention of it on the steam forums and within the space of 24 hours my specific issue was resolved. In addition, when I made an additional feature request off the back of that fix, that TOO was delivered within 24 hours. All of this despite the game not having VR support in the "official" sense. (It has to be set up by enabling an option and editing some txt files rather than be a "plug and play" experience)
This guy has complete and utter dedication to his product and the community. Just check out the forums for yourself and see the engagement. That alone is in such stark contrast to the attitudes of Frontier (Elite Devs) that it instantly elevates this game to legendary status, and ensures I will be speaking about (and hopefully playing!) Evochron Legacy for a long time to come.
So this game fills a great niche, and has a passionate dev, but what actually makes it great? To be clear, this game is absolutely not Elite. Nor is it trying to be. In fact I would go as far as to say that this game is everything Elite ISN'T. Which depending on what you're looking from a VR+HOTAS space sim might be the refreshing change up you need.
To put it simply, where Elite has style, Evochron Legacy has substance.
Evochron Legacy is an immensely deep game with lots of interconnecting systems that come together to give the player a level of freedom and agency which is not present in Elite.
Yes I miss the slick graphics and sound design of Elite, the noises and atmosphere of a busy space station in Elite are second to none. But in Elite the illusion of immersion is shattered the moment you look towards the painted-on texture of an earth like planet knowing you cannot land there, or as you fly out to the edges of a solar system to discover its invisible walls. Or the moment you realize the carrier you've been grinding for is basically just a menu screen with extra steps. Every corner of Elites systems have grind or limitations reminding the player that they cannot do things in the way they want or expect.
Evochron is the opposite of that in a lot of ways. It puts features and player freedom and agency above all else. The graphics are deceptive as they lead you to believe this game is simple or bereft of detail, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Every aspect of this game has been crafted to ALLOW the player instead of restrict them (within reason). Features such as being able to actually fly through the atmosphere of every planet (including gas giants!) and have the atmosphere actually effect the ship flight model, being able build bases both in space and on land, have an actual effect on the economy, build and design ships from the ground up, Fly anywhere seamlessly, and switch up loadouts and play-styles completely at a whim.
If you point your nose towards something in Evochron and dig deeper, you'll likely discover some new detail or aspect or feature which pleasantly surprises. Like how I wanted to check out a planet and while cruising around close to the ground I saw birds. BIRDS, IN A SPACE GAME. Sure they were janky looking but at least they were THERE. At this stage I'd take that over the vaporware promises of Elite and Star Citizen.
Unfortunately, there are obvious areas which have to be sacrificed when you're a one man dev on a mission to develop these deep and complex games. Not everyone is Roberts Space Industries and nor do they want to be.
The sound and graphics in this game can be wildly inconsistent ranging from beautiful to downright ugly. Particularly on planets the game takes on an almost retro PS2 style charm. And the tutorial took me three evening of gaming time to fully complete and grasp. This game is HARDCORE and there's a lot here in first impressions which could put people off. If you stick it out and look past that, you'll find plenty in this game which will blow your mind. I think it speaks volumes that even though this game is as rough around the edges as it is - particularly for new players - I still want to experience all of what it has to offer because this game offers depth and is begging to be explored.
I like deep and complex games, I'm not afraid to learn how to play them. I also love space and space sim games. To find a space sim game of this depth and complexity, in VR, with HOTAS support, and with a dev that actually gives a ♥♥♥♥. There is nothing else. It simply doesn't exist.
I'm having a blast. It's good to be back in the pilots seat.

awesome and great work - truly impressive work of one-man-army and software. so underrated but all the more appreciated. from physics, style even visuals in it's own unique way and engine to the ideas, dynamics and coding of interfaces. compared to things like ED or SC... with a 500-1000kkk budget. can't even provide their users with "seemingly" or minor features like scrollable chat/history or a HUD to disable. let alone actual newtonian control layers, combat and physics. truly incredible.
It is a fun game to master but always make sure to have the right System Requirements & a good graphics card. This is for the Developer to see & know presently that you seem to have 2 of everything but I've been playing a long time & the game won't allow me to buy a "Terrain Walker". Please acknowledge & fix this bug.
Fantastic one man project with exploration ,combat, trading etc that looks good considering age, feels great to play love it.

Улучшение корабля, улучшение пушек, постройка станций, добыча, создание флота. Получаешь у разных пилотов за деньги точки интереса. По карте пытаешься их найти, на каждой станции свои задания, поиск, охота, доставка, починка, такси. Читаешь новости, хочешь торгуешь. Цель построит мега корабли и супер флот если играешь один. С флотом уничтожить и нагнуть фракции либо пахать на них. Есть мультиплеер. Игра создавалась еще тогда, когда не было всех современных космосимуляторов, которые не дотягивают по полетам до нее. А распределение энергии, на оружие на щиты, куда больше щитов подать - это нечто. Все кто говорят что скучно, ничего не понимают в космосимуляторах.
This is not bad at all though it has quite a bit of controls involved, if you can think of action there isa botton for it which is good, though remembering all this is rather tedious.
The only complaint so far is ... graphics ? yeah did not think I'd say that but here it is, at the very least the starter ship in 3d person looks terrible cockpit is passable.
Best part is that you can really configure your ship in ship building with the same hull! yeah need more cargo space ? - np just drop some defence, or ditch Jimmy the second pilot into space and stack dimonds in his seat.
Also as a lover of mining - maybe we could have a bit more detailed and involving mining ? scanning the rocks is nice but would be great if the rocks would break apart and depleat so you would have to move in the roid field? Also maybe some small pests like minor or major pirats depending on the area could be added to atack you / shake you down - you know so you have to invest into combat and def system? maybe there is this mechanic I just have not encountered it. Overall this game is on right course hopefully expended with DLC or in next iteration.

Game similar to Elite dangerous besides the graphics. You can mine, fight, explore and even customize your ship as well as building space enters. A lot less grindy then ED and even has a sandbox mode where you can give yourself whatever you need be it money or equipment. Different ship to choose from and you can add different parts to them as well. Also no loading screen once you in the game so you just choose where you want to go and you will go there and not a center point in that solar system but the point you choose on the map. Overall a very nice game especially considering it made by one person. One last thing can go how fast you want to in space there no limits like in some other games.
This game is spectacular. While Elite: Dangerous continues to spiral down into a garbage fire (just kidding, Elite is cool), I went out in search of a new space sim and holy crap, I found it.
While this may not be the best looking game out there, this game has so much to offer that completely makes up for it (assuming you're someone who really cares about graphics). It's quite incredible, especially considering the fact that this game was made and is maintained by ONE GUY. The fact that he does this in his free time and is still pushing out updates is incredible. Big ups to the developer. There is just so much that you can do in this game. You can take contracts, build bases, trade, mine, shoot stuff, play online, play offline, go exploring, and probably tons of other stuff that I haven't found yet.
There is also a lot of customization when it comes to your ship. You can kit your ship out however you want and for whatever task you might be trying to accomplish. While there's a lot you can customize, it's still pretty easy to follow along with and understand what you're doing. I hate when space games make the customization super in-depth to where you can't really understand what changing something will affect on your ship.
The flying in this game is amazing. The model itself is certainly better than similar games (Elite). It feels a lot less arcade-y and a lot more what you would think flying a spaceship should feel like. There's no "space breaks" or turning rate limits. You can go as fast as you want. If you completely turn off your inertial dampening system (IDS in-game) you can get spinning so fast that you literally tear your ship apart and blow up lol.
Probably the biggest draw to this game is the community. Unfortunately it is small, since this game has been out for so long, but the people that do still play this game are super friendly and inviting. I've only been playing for a couple weeks and already feel like I'm "part of the crew." Of course, you don't have to play in multiplayer, like I said above, but I think it makes the game a lot more fun to do missions with other pilots. You can also host your own server, or connect directly with IP to play with friends. The game is really versatile when it comes to how you can play this game with other people.
A couple other things to mention, you can play this game in VR (which looks amazing), you can play with a HOTAS or HOSAS setup (pretty much anything will work from my experience) and a player made a Voice Attack pack that is absolutely amazing and completely changes the way you play the game. The game also appears to be extremely moddable, though I haven't dabbled much with mods yet. You seem to also be able to write your own quests and share them with friends, which is super cool.
To summarize, this is probably my favorite space sim. It's simply wonderful how much stuff you can do. If you're a fan of space sims, check this game out and come play with us!
If you are looking for the general definition of a space sim game then this is it, but for me, that is all there is. Nothing really stands out in this game. As far as space sims go this one has had zero bugs or issues, there is nothing bad I can really say about this game, but there is also nothing that really stands out for me. The general feel is...."general"....and that's it. I am sure others may love this game and really nerd out with their ship, but the "epic" feeling I get from other games just is not there. I am recommending this game because it may suit other players and there is nothing bad I can really say about this game.
This is a wonderful and challenging game, It takes love of space type tech and problems to appreciate it though. Great games for space "nerds", probably not satisfying for people who are into run-of-mill space shooters. I'd easily give it 7 out of 10. Those 3 missing, they are down to
1. the graphics are outdated, but not outdated enough to be "vintage". If I could have one request fulfilled by the developer: Please overhaul the graphics. Some decent PBR, more realistic looking planets and you'd have an instant 10
2. reduce the amount of grind. It's bearable, but often times not enjoyable.
I love space games. The problem with this one is perhaps the main money maker is mining. It has amazingly accurate controls as you would expect of a space simulator which I love. Drift past your enemy while facing the same direction as them and engage your afterburners to suddenly be tailing behind them like in Battlestar? Check. Upgrade and personalize your spacecraft? Check and Check.
However from starting the game you'll make it a few hours and suddenly hit a wall. You need money. The way to make that money quickly without spending around 20 hours doing fetch quests is to sit facing an asteroid and just mine. Get an NPC to mine for you. Deploy structure to mine for you. Choose if you want to be a space tug going between asteroids while they mine, or just sit and stare at the screen while you mine. This game has a lot of potential but ends up just being a chore for a long long stretch. Maybe the end game is fun. After 26Hrs I don't know.
Before I say anything I do want to say that for the first time in a while I'm having fun in a space sim thanks to this game!
I will try and break it down:
1) The tutorial treats you like a normal human being and explains everything you need to know about piloting a ship and what all the information getting thrown at you means.
2) The missions are varied and go beyond the usual "fly passenger here, or deliver x material here". You still get these but they're in between some greats. I had this moment where I needed to collect biological samples of some flying creatures on the local planet but the nav beacon sent me to the dark side of the planet. I spent a few minutes flying over the horizon into what essentially became sunrise. It put a huge smile on my face to say the least. After which I collected my samples on the beach and could turn in. It felt very organic.
3) The dogfights. This is where this game really shines. I remember dogfighting in elite dangerous becoming a boring endless slog after a while. This game does space combat really well! It's deep, it requires skill and it's oh so satisfying coming out alive!
4) The scale is awesome! I was just flying around in my little starter ship and all of the sudden this huge capital ship warped in and I had to scramble to dodge it!
5) it's deep. Like seriously there is so much customisation one can do to your ship. There's station construction. There are fleet mechanics. There are faction dynamics. The trading system is usable without needing a 3rd party website!
TL:DR It may not look like much but there's a lot of good game here and I cannot recommend it enough!

I have been playing StarWraith games since Evochron Mercenary. There were two games prior which I didnt try because the subject matter overlaps and they were older. These are the efforts of one man to produce his vision of the best space sim sandbox and I think he has succeeded.
I bought mercenary because of the non-military content such as exploration and mining. While I had no intention of doing the combat stuff, my explorations took me into places that were involved in a war and no matter how hard you try to stay out of a bar room brawl, someone is going to take a swing at you eventually.
While the space appears limited, it is in fact expansive. Looking at the map does not reveal all. There is exploring to do. Things out there need finding from wrecks and stations all the way up to planets! There are resources to harvest in space and on the planets and to trade both on planetary cites and stations near planets. There are quest chains and individual missions. You can build your own stations and manufacturing facilities. There is a straight forward economy that you can view and manipulate and a very active NPC population.
You can embark on a term of military service in one of the war zones which generate their own missions. While I dont play these types of games for the combat.. I will say that the combat in this game is addictive.
With all that being said this is not a simplistic sim. The tutorial is better than in most of these types of games and I would say you need at least 3-4 hours in the game before you start getting comfortable. The flight model employs a good dose of Newtonian Physics and requires your attention. Planetary re-entry likewise requires you to pay attention to speed and altitude so you dont burn up when you hit the atmosphere.
I have not explored ALL the game has to offer but I doubt you can explore all of space and find all the things in it. There is also "Riftspace" and the places it will lead you to but that is for you to find.
This game is timeless and classic.
