To those who want to gatekeep art:
All I can say is that this game is an honest human expression, crafted with dedication, intention, and both contextual understanding and self-awareness. I find its aesthetics (especially the music) to be really interesting, but I don't think art needs to be "good" or "virtuous" to be art. Some people feel connected to and represented by this kind of weirdness / boldness / obnoxiousness or whatever you want to call it. Other people may find that the kind of art you like is predictable, pompous, kitsch, or whatever else. Expecting too much of art, or anything, is a recipe for disappointment, when sometimes it's just a matter of taste and being at peace with diversity. Nothing "great" is going on here. Or maybe there is: life. And it's pretty ordinary. Sometimes that paradox hits you while looking at a bee, at a Renaissance painting, or when some form of absurdity in what would otherwise be a familiar medium makes you realize that you like chasing gleamy representations of abstract objects and funky sounds on a screen, for no purpose whatsoever other than exploiting an evolutionary glitch.
Just listen to the trailer and decide based on that.

Dujanah is probably a game about the titular character going on a journey to find her family. It's also definitely about more than that. Sometimes it's comically but fittingly blunt about imperialism, other times it deals with the subtleties of coming to terms with death and the attitudes towards dying. Dujanah is weird, clunky, pretty funny, and ugly pretty. I'm glad I finally played it, and would recommend it to someone looking for a unique and experimental indie gaming experience.
Not everyone will like this game, because it is a walking sim that has as much meaning as you give it. The story can be hard to comprehend, and I almost want to replay the game because of it. The artwork and music are some of the best I have seen in a game, fitting the vibe very well. I haven't played a game that upset me in a good way in a very long time.

Es una historia repleta de emociones que, a pesar de que fuerza a realizar algunas tareas que no vienen al punto de la trama, logra hacer reflexionar al jugador en todo momento.
Recomiendo fuertemente darle una oportunidad, más si se lo encuentra en oferta.

Well, that was different. Really not sure what to think about it. Pretty experimental and artsy. I don't think I liked it, but I don't think I'm supposed to. The game description just says "apolitical" yet it feels political with all the women dressed in niqabs including your character, in an occupied Islamic country. It has big tonal shifts. Tries to be humorous sometimes, but I didn't find it funny. Tries to be deep and philosophical sometimes, but it's hit and miss. Control on the overland map is atrocious. One of the biggest flaws yet also a strength in terms of variety is the room with the six "arcade games". The problem is that you have to win three of those. One is easy, one you have to cheat at and the others feel tedious and repetitive, perhaps intentionally so.
The music is varied and mostly good. The graphics are... special, looking like sculpted clay it seems, hovering between grotesque and nice with a constant screen filter making things grainy and staticky. Gameplay is mostly walking around (no running), sometimes in mazes, and talking to people, except for those arcade games. Supposed to be decisions that can change the outcomes, but I didn't see them. I won't recommend the game because of its flaws and to provide counterpoint to the very positive Steam review rating. It's somewhat interesting and original though.
It is a hidden gem, a masterpiece no less.

Found it the same as I found it back in 2017: beautiful but cripplingly disjointed.
The loss doesn't feel ambient and omnipresent, it peters through the ridiculously-woven crust of the world in anemic brooks. Reckon that is the point, but nonetheless.
Horizon-wide thematic variety doesn't help, nor does the constant personal dev intervention. It's like he's injecting the game with a humorous analgesic for fear of it being too emotionally lopsided. Admirable, but heavily overdone.
Then I remembered I didn't do the sisters' request, and came back to fulfill it.
I take it all back.

I have an up-and-down opinion of Dujanah. I love that it's experimental. I love that it's pushing the medium. I love many of its highs. But I'm also saddled with its lows. Ultimately, I'll recommend this game, as I think it's worth experiencing, but for most of my time with it I thought I wouldn't. I felt like the message was basic, and many of the vignettes to be trite and lacking the punch I was expecting from such a bold setup. But the parts that I connected with were strong enough, and in particular some of the writing in its most powerful scenes good enough, that it ultimately sticks the landing, though just barely.
Dujanah is a collage of different art pieces that pull you from one theme to the next. It's more an art gallery put into a video game package than a video game itself. This aspect of it depresses me if I'm being honest; I kind of hate that one of the boldest games isn't much of a game. It kinda puts a damper on the whole medium, and its potential for real art. There aren't many (any?) other games that have a Muslim woman suffering under colonial oppressors as their protagonist after all. Not that this little indie title deserves to bear the weight of the whole medium on its shoulders. And in fairness, there are a handful of "this could only be done in a game!" moments: the random events that vary from playthrough to playthrough, the nonlinearity of the experiences, and the subtle interactivity of its voiced-over stories (namely [spoiler]the witch story[/spoiler]). But on the other end of the spectrum, there is more than a handful of moments which are just audio or video clips being fed to you while your inputs remain idle. Which is fine, but is worth bearing in mind: Dujanah doesn't put the medium itself to much use, for better or for worse.
Tonally it jumps around a lot too: sometimes it's a meme game, other times it's deadly serious. Not all of these moments work, but there were quite a handful that did for me. More than the motifs and themes being discussed themselves, King-Spooner's writing steps up in those most poignant moments. [spoiler]By far my favorite part of the game is Amquey Hotchkins' monologue about death. The ending at the funeral was also incredibly well-done. This guy has some serious talent.[/spoiler] Some of my least favorite parts were actually when the game shied away from being bold, and said far less than it could have; leaving me with basic aphorisms and level 1 discourse that I can -tell- this guy can do better than. [spoiler]I -hated- the credits poem right after the funeral. Whoever wrote that poem is a far worse writer than King-Spooner; he'd have been better off giving his own game a send-off. Another big low point was the consciousness "discussion." The audio clip is about as basic an analysis of free will and its spectrum of possibility as you could get, and I was sitting there waiting for them to get to a point that I hadn't heard before. Maybe I've just read too much for that stuff to actually hit me as it will hit others.[/spoiler]
A core problem, though, is that so little of the runtime is actually dedicated to those poignant moments. About half the game is spent in the "arcade," which as I'm sure others have mentioned, is where the game falters most. The racing game, the shooter, and the armadillo game do nothing to add to the overall themes and were largely a waste of time. The longest of the games, the Caves of Al Dajjal, loosely connects to everything, but even if it didn't I'm ashamed to admit I just enjoyed it because I found it rather fun. Cute little metroidvania they snuck into this thing; wasn't expecting that. There's something to be said for the meta narrative that we all use games to distract ourselves from what's really important (in this case the main storyline to find your family) but even that is dulled by the fact that it's required content. You have to play these minigames in order to progress. So that wrinkle isn't wholly there, either. That isn't to say it's all pointless: there is some connection, for sure: [spoiler]pie or anus touches on the theme of free will or the lack thereof, Caves of Al Dajjal give an awesome, foreboding sense of hopelessness and futility (you routinely feel lost without knowing where to go), and the shooter game looks like a bombing raid on civilian cities, though again, that one is kind of weak. I do like the fact that the spider people, who in fairly clear terms are meant to be local insurgents, are the ones that need the arcade coins, though. Speaks to their incompetence that they can't just win it themselves, but also their fake masculinity / terror. They're just hurt little boys who wish to see video games beaten, underneath their spider exterior (exoskeleton?).[/spoiler]
As for the art and music? Largely brilliant, especially for a solo project. Love the use of FMVs; great to see an artist bear their soul without shame. Claymation is dope, though nowhere near Hylics' level (high bar). All Our Mothers Were Darlings is a standout track but it's not the only one; sound design is good all around.
I could go on (but I'm running out of characters lol) but the point is that Dujanah throws a lot at you, in rapid succession. Some of it works, some of it doesn't, but the parts that do are worth seeing for yourself. As for me? I'm happy I did, and am excited to play the rest of King-Spooner's catalogue.
Oh and one final thing: bless the Scots and their courage. To make a game in this setting, with these themes? As a Persian man I can tell you it's well appreciated; media/art like this really helps, and it takes a bold artist to be so clear in their anti-establishment slant. Love it.

This game allows you to see the perspective and ideals of the creator in such a way no other game I have seen is capable of.
A favorite for me
Insanity, revenge, hope, love, mundanity, ascension, fantasy, grief, eccentricity... I have yet to play a game which has so succinctly captured the human experience more than Dujanah. Its heavy-handed, at times insultingly obvious themes are bashed over one's head, only to disappear in an instant to give way to a man complaining about eggs, and then to return once again in the form of a broken family. A revenge fantasy reaches a fever pitch, one in which the player is meant to believe it is real, that those who can carry it out are indeed incredibly powerful and have the means to do so, only to reveal itself as a sham. The constant ups and downs, the mundane, tedious walks and emotionally intense, soul-hollowing scenes, the raves and slaughter contrasted with soft doubts of one's own place in the world...
If there is an emotion to be had, Dujanah will rip it out of you and tear it to shreds before your eyes. It will do this before you're even aware there was an emotion to experience. The dev vomits upon the canvas that is Dujanah. It is every worry, every fear, every drunken rant and over-correcting day after. It understands beauty and ugliness, unafraid to deliver each to the player, if not emboldened by doing so.
For each brutally on-the-nose event, there are ten subtle details to flesh out a more complete world. It is the future, but also the present, but also the past, but also some fourth thing. It is real, but it is not. It is a distinctly human realm, but nobody seems all too human, but they are all so human in how they act, talk, hurt, and hope.
Play this game. You will never play one like it again.
I don't even know what to say. This has to be the most unique game I've ever played. More people need to experience this. If you are reading this and are at all intrigued, buy this game and play it blind. It has a lot to say, is dripping with style, and has fantastic music.
You will laugh, you will cry, and you will think a lot about life and death.

Nice game. I knew i had to get the arcade tokens ahead of time from reading reviews, but I did not find the arcade section too long and drawn out, I just blindly kept exploring and finished the game in a timely manner. the dialogue didn't really land with me but the overall story was simple yet im gald i finished it out.

Intriguing collage of mediums and themes. It’s somewhat difficult to decipher the dense dialogue and the walking speed is incredibly tedious, but there are little bits here that resonate and some good jokes too. Great music.

trippy, cathartic, bizarre, dark... the feelings of death and grief, yet not without hope.
this is an Experience. The art is strange and unsettling, the lo-fi glitchy effects kinetic and corrupting~ Also the music is absolutely incredible, seriously just.... so so good.
a lot of this is cryptic and bizarre, it's best to not worry about understanding anything and feel through it instead. Also, this hits particularly intensely as the horrific genocide of Palestinians continues.

Dujanah is a masterpiece and a masterclass. I couldn't sing it's praises more highly. Thank you Jack King-Spooner. People seek entertainment even in improper places. Dujanah is just that: a sweet uncanny valley of entertainment. Is the purpose of Dujanah catharsis, existentialism, subverted heroism, identity, fatherhood, or some combination of all of the above? Well, the greater purpose is for you to ask why. The greater purpose is to play through the game while coming to grip with all of life's potentials and choices and the causality of our actions. The greater purpose is to gift us with the reflection of own individual consciousness and to recognize that the whole of everything is consciousness. In dying, you become a part of the universe. Yet, in dying, you're held back by possessiveness and attachments - by love and ego. Love is the ability to release and trust, yet love is also the ability to hold on forever in faith: a contradiction where loving well means letting go, but also means never letting go. You are everything, everywhere, all at once. You are in the present. You are just there. You are. Finding time to pause and let go of different versions of self, to empty the self into just being, the game allows a safe space for our ego death. If you don't feed a hamster, it dies. It allows a safe space to heal your inner child while wandering through a strawberry field and then listen to yourself recite a Trump speech and then watch a movie with a sex doll and then slaughter rows and rows of soldiers in an act of bloody revenge one minute to the next. It allows you to lose yourself in the narrative and to lose the narrative entirely. It allows you to wander aimlessly in the desert and in the desert in the reaction of the video game and in the mini video games in the video game itself. It allows you to wander aimlessly in the maze of your mind to both lose and find yourself. We search our whole lives for answers; sometimes we have to make our own answers. The greater purpose is for you to find your own meaning in the illusion. The goal is for you to be visibly, viscerally aware of the artist, creator, and the real philosophical, political world around us through the layers of other meta-world-building. Dujanah is a blank canvas with the smell of turpentine and the vague idea that art used to exist here. Each scene of the game is a work of art, but it's hard to tell if a soup can really is art. The game stretches the confines of what is meaningful. It allows you to observe your meaning for a transient little while. 8.5/10

'비정치적인(apolitical)'이라는 간단한 소개문구가 어처구니없이 느껴질 정도로 다분히 정치적인 <Dujanah>는 자전적인 <Beeswing>를 만들었으며 <Experiment 12>에도 참여한 것으로 유명한(?) 스코틀랜드 출신 Jack King-Spooner의 게임이다. 전쟁에서 폭력적으로 변해 돌아온 할아버지에게서 영감을 얻은 그는 중동 국가들의 붕괴를 야기한 미국의 패권주의에 대한 비판을 우화적이면서도 직설적인 클레이메이션 게임으로 표현했다.
전혀 관련이 없어보이면서도 묘한 슬픔과 때로는 우악스러운 분노를 낳는 등장인물들의 대화나 미니게임들, 다양한 그래픽 스타일과 머리가 깨질 듯한 색감, 결정적으로 환상적인 음악이 매우 인상적이지만, 불편한 조작감과 심하게는 지리멸렬해 보이는 장면들, 거의 나르시시스트적으로까지 보이는 제작자 본인의 우스꽝스러운 등장과 (다분히 의도적인 듯한) 깨진 스코티쉬 억양이 진행에 방해가 된다. 가장 아쉬운 것은 초현실적 장면들과 현실적 사건들 사이의 얼개가 부드럽게 맞춰지지 않는 느낌이 든다는 건데, 이 때문에 그 장면들이 단순한 정신병적 후까시인지, 아니면 비극의 섬세한 일부인지 알 수가 없는 상황이 발생한다. (하지만 그 장면들 자체가 흥미롭고 아름답기는 하다)
새로운 경험에 환장한 나는 가뭄에 오줌이라도 내린 듯 열심히 받아먹었지만, 확실히 다수에게 어필할 만큼 완성도가 높은 게임이라고는 할 수 없겠다. 엔딩 도전과제 외에 게임 내에 숨겨진 난해한 도전과제가 하나 있는 것으로 보이는데, <Inscryption> 마냥 수많은 사람들이 달라붙어 이를 해결하는 평행세계를 꿈꾸지만... 그럴 수는 없겠지. 하지만 스팀 평가 200여개를 끝으로 잊혀지기에는 너무 아까운 게임이라는 건 확실하다.
여러 단점에도 불구하고, 이런 아트스타일과 주제의식, 그리고 <Space Funeral>과 <Hylics>를 사랑하는 사람으로서 추천할 수밖에 없겠다.

I'm gonna tell you the meaning, the underlying meaning of the whole game: half-hearted surrealist humanism with moments of both genuine emotional profundity and sophomoric philosophy (immediately budget Mr House comes to mind along with his metaphysical existentialist nothingburger), I attribute the purposeless obfuscation of the game's commentary to coyness, tragically there isn't any inherent artistic merit to inaudible voiceovers or absurdist visuals, idk why I'm so mean I still think it's worth playing
Arguably this is not a game in the traditional sense. Put simply Dujanah is a collection of vignettes and stories delivered through an exploration based walking simulator. I hope people do not see the claymation elements of this game and think it will be like Hylics or other things that have used similar mediums, Dujanah is very much its own beast. The music and visual aesthetics combined with these often heartfelt and introspective bits of dialogue from the many NPCs you speak with over the course of this 2-4 hour experience make for something that feels compelling and worth talking about. I can imagine some may be turned off by the art style and more extreme aesthetic choices like many are with games like Cruelty Squad but if you are like me and enjoy seeing experimental medium blending work this could be something worth checking out. Others may come away thinking that the game is pretentious but I feel as though the themes of death, love, and life are dealt with in a very sincere and vulnerable way with much of the main creator's vision coming through in the game during its short runtime. I believe some of the anecdotes and elements of this game will remain with me for years to come such as Dujanah's fantasies with the sisters, the woman who feels loves the boy across the hall, and the child expressing themselves through play.

'Twas a riveting experience. Annoying at times but overall rewarding. Truly inexpensive, worth the purchase.
Definitely isn't for everyone I feel like this game will invoke something different for everyone that plays it, but giving the game at least one playthrough you'll find an immensely creative game with wild and provocative graphics, with a soundtrack that not only has vibes, but bangers as well and a narrative that lets you soak in what it says and lets you come to a conclusion of what it all means

Dujanah won't leave my mind since I've first played it.
I come back to it from time to time and depending on my circumstances in life I always find something different to appreciate about it, some other NPC whose dialogue affects me, another place that I stop to stand in, another music track that makes me stop and listen to it. This game makes me feel in so many different ways over and over again. I think I'll keep coming back.
Very unique. Cool style. Thought provoking. Funny. Sad. Short (that's a good thing). Wide thematic breadth for such a short game. While most of it doesn't go particularly deep, it consistently says a lot with a little.
Most of the game is walking and interacting with people and things. Actual gameplay challenges are kind of hit or miss (I guess they never miss, huh?). Others seem to be saying the arcade games are really hard. They're not. Perhaps these people were expecting to be able to beat them in one attempt.
You can probably tell if you want to play this game or not by looking at it.

Awesome game! The minigame issues mentioned in the reviews are irrelevant, as 3 of the 7 arcade games are essentially freebies (they're walking simulator-esque). Play this!

It's funny that I almost didn't buy this game cause some idiots said there's a bunch of ridiculously hard minigames you have to beat in order to progress.
There isn't.
I'll continue to play this game cause I'm scared that I missed anything.
Finding everything can be a mess sometimes, but it all works out somehow.

This game has so much to offer with an incredible soundtrack, beautiful artistic design, and thought-provoking (if heavy-handed at times) writing. I was deeply touched by certain parts. It's the type of work that can only come from strong, singular direction, by an author who clearly heavily invested their own emotional capital. All of which makes me want to love the game. But to put it simply, the highs are high and the lows are too low.
It feels like there was some intentional effort to 'fit' contrasting elements in the game (I want to say they are shoehorned), rather than let the predominant segments stand for themselves. The main culprit is, yes, the arcade, which others have written about in their reviews. But also, the hideous seizure-inducing retro aesthetic. Why, when there is such high effort and appealing claymation, right there beside it? Or, segments of pseudo-philosophical rambling when there are also moments of profound and touching dialogue. It makes it seem almost like the author just grabbed a handful of 'cool philosophical ideas' out of a box and threw them at the game, essentially stumbling into something that made sense. I hope not, because some of the ideas were pretty good. How about, the absurd xD random humor opposed to the genuinely clever jokes sprinkled throughout.
It's frustrating, in the way that only something you genuinely like can upset you. In the end, I'm not really sure if the good was worth drudging through the bad, which makes the game hard to recommend.
