DLC Quest is a charming little satirical platformer that nails its one-joke premise — you literally can't move left or jump without buying the DLC first — and somehow keeps it funny throughout its brief runtime. It's the kind of game where you're grinning the whole way through, especially as the jokes escalate and start mirroring real industry practices that have only gotten worse since 2013. The first campaign is tighter and funnier, while the sequel 'Live Freemium or Die' drags a bit and leans too hard on referential humor that's aged unevenly. At its sale price it's an easy recommendation, though go in knowing it's more of an interactive comedy sketch than a deep gaming experience — you'll finish it in an afternoon and probably won't return.
It was funny and I spent a few hours on it. I don't feel I wasted my time or money.
It’s a cute concept and fun for a few hours, but it doesn’t have much depth. The whole game is built around making fun of bad DLC practices, and that joke actually works alright. Unlocking basic things like jumping, sound, or pausing with in game “DLC” is funny at first and works well as a gimmick.
The platforming itself is very simple and mostly just there to support the joke. Once you’ve seen how the system works, there aren’t many surprises left. Levels are short, challenge is light, and replay value is pretty limited.
I’d recommend it if you find it on sale. It’s an enjoyable little game.
Still accurate to the day
It's worth its price, though notably the Live Freemium or Die update alone makes it worth. Instead of being just a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, it's an actual game that manages to satirize the rampant consumerism of DLC practices (more relevant now than even back then) without falling into the trappings of the case, like not knowing what you're talking about.
Really wish there was an update for basic qol options like some additional languages though; game's more than 10 years old and now more than ever is the perfect time to play it.

This has the distinction of being the very first Steam game I've ever bought and played. I mention this because there is literally nothing else remarkable about this game. The joke that "Hur Dur you need to pay your way to win the game!" gets old after 10 minutes, and somehow they try to keep it going for hours? Sorry, no. Spend your money elsewhere.

Holy flaming corporate horse-sh*t, I played DLC Quest and I am cackling like a drunk demon at 4 a.m. This game is a glorious, middle-finger masterpiece aimed straight at the gaming industry.
This thing is a platformer that basically says:
“HEY GAMERS, WANNA JUMP?
PAY ME FIRST, YOU LOOTBOX-LOVING GOBLIN.”
And I LOVE IT.
The whole damn game is split into two chunks of golden, satirical nonsense. The first half is cute, goofy, and easy as hell — like “grandma on training wheels easy” — but still fun. You’re mostly hunting hidden crap and giggling at jokes about microtransactions, DLC scams, and all the AAA bullsh*t we’ve been suffering through for years.
Then Part Two shows up and goes:
“SURPRISE, MOTHERF***ER,”
and suddenly you’re wall-jumping, dodging spikes, earning DLC just to basic-function your own damn character, and laughing your ass off at the ending. The humour is so on point it should win a f***ing comedy award — or at least a participation ribbon from me, which is basically the same thing.
And for my fellow achievement-hoarding, checklist-loving degenerates:
This game respects your time.
Short achievement list. No grind. No 300-hour collectable nightmare. You can 100% this bad boy without sacrificing your sanity, your social life, or your will to live.
Downside? Yeah, sure — it’s only like 3 hours long. But guess what? I’ve played triple-priced AAA trash that felt like 3 hours of colonoscopy simulator, so I’ll take short and funny over long and soul-sucking any day.
Final judgment, stamped, signed, slapped, and delivered:
Buy the damn thing — just maybe grab it on sale.
It’s hilarious. It’s clever. It’s fun.
And it roasts the gaming industry so hard you can smell the burnt microtransactions.

A shrug and a chuckle of a game that's very much of it's time. Of it's time, I remember enjoying some of it's humor but not the gameplay. That was kinda the point, but I'd sooner recommend experienceing through a playthrough. I'm not even sure where I got 2hrs of play time from besides scouring every inch of the game because I overestimated how much there was to do. Not bad, not great, but I'd lean against buying it.
This game is goofy, but very clever. If you want a short and easy game and like collecting coins, this game is probably for you. It took me around 2 hours to get both true endings.
I played this in the era where you would find parody and nostalgia games all over.

게임 컨셉자체가 요즘 AAA+게임시장을 저격하는 느낌이 없지않아 있으나, 대놓고 저격하는것도 아니고 컨셉에 맞는 스토리도 갖췄습니다. 사실 그런 뉘양스를 풀풀 풍겼더라도 큰 문제라고 느끼진 않았을것 같지만요.
이름과 같게 게임의 모든 콘텐츠를 DLC를 구매하며 진행해야합니다. 다만 그 DLC라 하는것은 인게임내에서 구매하는 것이며, 인게임재화로 이뤄지게됩니다. 애초에 이게 주 플레이방식이고요. 그래서 DLC를 사고 난 전과 후의 NPC들의 대화도 보는 재미가 있습니다.
다만 NPC 들의 대화 스크립트와 개발자 비하인드(?)를 읽는것도 컨텐츠의 일부인 게임이라고 생각하는데, 생각보다 영어능력을 요합니다. 기초적인 정도만 알아도 뉘양스를 읽을 순 있으나, 미국식드립을 이해하기 난감한 경우도 있고 웃긴포인트를 잡아내긴 힘든 부분이 있습니다. 이건 조금 아쉬울 정도 그 뿐이네요.
가격도 50%할인하면 1700원에 불과하고, 플탐도 2시간 내외라 가성비는 매우 좋습니다.

DLC quest is a dated, if well intentioned satire that overstays its welcome with its gimmick. The point it makes matter, but it's not an engaging game to play. And I don't mean that in the "The game that feels purposefully bad to play is bad to play and that makes it a bad game", I mean that on a "You could have made this a 5 minutes experience and it would have gotten the point across".

DLC Quest is a fun little indie game that jokingly, yet accurately, takes shots at the state of Downloadable content in the industry.
A fun and simple satiric platformer from an era right before when DLC turned into microtransactions. Clearly made by an enthusiast who wanted to place a flag in the sand of where we were and what we would become if we weren't careful.
From what I remember (from a decade ago), the 2013 references, the writing, and the platforming were all enjoyable.
This is clever.

DLC Quest is a puzzle platforming meme game where you need to buy animations, abilities, and interface options using in-game currency in order to fix everything stripped out in the name of making a 'profit'. The gameplay is decent, but most of the selling point is the niche humor.

Watching the game is enough to give you the idea. If this idea was taken to a larger level, I am sure you got yourself a fun game play experience. I just look back at this game, not wanting to replay it. Going through and buying the DLCs the first time was fun and interesting; but, since there is only so much to buy and so much to do. You reach the end very quickly. So if you want to experience this game I would suggest watching some one else play it. If this doesn't stop you. Then I believe you will have fun. Also as others mentioned the speed run achievements are not 'fun'. To tie beating the game as fast as possible to a steam achievement shows that even they want you to rush through the game.
Funny, but quite short.

Humorystyczna platformówka. Skacz i kolekcjonuj motety, idąc od gagu do gagu o konieczności kupowania DLC nawet do poruszania się w prawo.
Co jest HOT:
+ sama platformówka jest fajna - prosta, postacią dobrze się steruje, byłby to miły odmóżdżacz...
A co NOT:
- ...gdyby nie konieczność wracania się raz za razem do handlarza, żeby kupić rzecz potrzebną do progresu. To jest coś, czego gry parodiujące gry często nie rozumieją - jeżeli wkurzająca rzecz, którą wyśmiewasz, jest częścią twojej gry, tylko opatrzona humorystycznym komentarzem... toto nadal jest wkurzająca rzecz, z którą gracz musi sobie radzić;
- to jest gra z 2011, i to czuć w humorze - zdarzyło mi się tu i tam uśmiechnąć, ale generalnie trudno uznać tę pozycję za szczególnie śmieszną czy celną;
- satyra jest bardzo płytka (i już się sypie na poziomie samej koncepcji, bo kupowanie kontentu za wewnątrzgrową walutę to nie DLC, tylko, cóż - kupowanie umiejętności za wewnątrzgrową walutę...), i szczerze mówiąc oklepana już w czasie, gdy wyszła. Osoby, które chwalą tę pozycję za przenikliwą krytykę przewidującą przyszłość są prawdopodobnie na tyle młode (albo niepogodzone z upływem czasu...), że nie zdają sobie sprawy, że chociażby wyśmiewana złota zbroja dla konia pije do DLC do Obliviona z 2006...;
- wszystkie wady jedynki olbrzymieją przez wielkość mapy w drugiej kampanii;
- aczivki za speedruning (przy braku możliwości przewinięcia scenek).
"DLC Quest" byłoby okej, gdyby temat zatrzymał się na pierwszej kampanii - niewielka mapa, mała gra do przejścia w pół godziny i mniej, ot, taka platformówka w klimacie starych stron z flashowymi gierkami na odmóżdżenie za dziesięć zyla. No ale jest jeszcze druga kampania, która jest dłuższa i ma znacznie większą (nieintuicyjną) mapę, przez co wszystkie problemy "jedynki" rosną do poważnej irytacji i zmęczenia (głównie przez backtracking, ale bieganie po planszy żeby zobaczyć, gdzie się odblokował nowy obszar, też na pewno nie pomaga). Jestem kolekcjonerem, lubię mieć znajdźki na 100%, ale absolutnie odmawiam wrócenia do drugiej części, żeby znaleźć dwa schowane przedmioty (tym bardziej, że nie ma zapisu ani opcji powrotu do świata po zakończeniu, jak przejdziesz grę, to musisz zacząć od początku). Nie warto, jest mnóstwo tanich a przyjemnych platformówek, które nie dręczą gracza nużącymi mechanikami w ramach płytkiej satyry na jedną nutę.

Incredibly superficial nothing game making a incredible heavy handed one note point. Its a basic as heck platformer (and not fun) that even 11 years ago you could have found some amazing projects for free with some actual depth to them.
This should have been nothing more than an animation on youtube. The fact they charge for this only serves to be a hypocrisy of its own point really.
Pretty sure I had this as part of a humble bundle way back when, but this being in it adds no value, probably only popular due to the circle that pushed it so hard at the time, which maybe would have been a more interesting point about the industry and how things are attributed value and sold to us then anything this "game" had to say.
Side note: Calling this game a prediction of gamings future is actually mental. This game was made 7 years after Oblivions horse armor (a thing it references), by the time this game was an idea in its creators head the discussion around DLC had already been around for actual years.
Whoever thought the speed run achievements were a good idea has brain damage. Do not pick up if you want to 100% the game.

Forgot I had this game in my library and can't even remember why I thought it'd be fun to play, but here I am.. I decided to go through some backlog and found this partially incomplete and now I remember why I stopped playing years ago. It's not that it controls poorly or has bad design.. it's just a gimmick, a novelty, a bad series of jokes/puns that I didn't care for then and still don't now. The worse part about it is having to speedrun both campaigns for achievements which in itself is never a fun task regardless of the game.
You might get your money's worth and you might not. There are worse games out there.

Regular DLC Quest is very basic, you can't die there, it takes about 30-40 minutes to complete 100%, but it is still pretty nice, funny jokes are definitely the best part out there, since the gameplay is very fundamental.
Second part, on the other hand, is much better, it adds a lot of action to the gameplay, there are spikes from which you can die, they does not do the game extremely difficult, but they definitely add some platforming challenge, there is an actual final boss in this part. Overall, second part is better and bigger, takes about and hour to complete 100%.
Art style in both titles is also extremely simple, pixel art with very few details, doesn't look bad though, rather pretty neat.
Soundtrack is quite good, but nothing especially original, it is just comfortable to listen while playing.
What I didn't like are speedrun achievements, those are just nonsense. To get them you need to complete first game 100% in 12 minutes and second one also 100% in 20 minutes, this is insane. There is so little time to spare, it is absolutely stupid to add such achievements to such game. If you do everything perfectly, you will have like 20-30 seconds to spare. I don't think this a good choice for an achievements.t
In general, both games are worth to try, price is decent for about 3-4 hours of gameplay, if you plan on doing everything.

A great parody of what went wrong in gaming industry, DLC that people hate aren't the DLC that adds new content like the old [b]expansion packs[/b]. It's the ones that are [b]nothing more[/b] than micro-transaction [i]cash-grabs[/i] designed not to satisfy us as customers but to [b]milk as much money out of our wallets as possible[/b].
Pay-to-win consumables, day one gameplay enhancements, and overpriced cosmetics to name a few. Therefore, this new normal is, unfortunately.

Still, the metroidvania concept holds up and it's a nice little title to finish within a few hours
Oh, and don't be afraid... you won't have to actually buy "real money" DLCs in this game. That's the point actually. :D
While I recognize this as a good commentary on the state of DLC in the early 2010s, I can't say the game holds up very well. The game-play loop makes less sense these days, as most DLC comes in the form of skins and battle passes. The game itself was never really fun on its own, so the over all package doesn't hold up as a fun experience. If you were big into gaming in the 2000s and early 2010s, you might get a kick out of the references and the way it calls out those early days of DLC; but with the short run time and lack of engaging game-play, I'm not sure you'll really enjoy the experience.
As an additional note, the achievements are all fairly easy, but there are 2 speed run achievements that really hurt the completionist experience. The margins for the runs are very slim and, as I mentioned before, the game is not very fun. You'll find yourself playing each game mode over and over, even if you know the good routes. This took my opinion on the game from neutral to negative.
I got it for free because a friend gave me a code, but I would have happily paid three bucks. The first part ends at exactly the point I started thinking I was ready for a little more from the game, and then there's an entire second part with just a little more meat.
I thought this game would at least give me some laughs but it's boring and tedious, time has aged it badly
Enjoyable game, satire, that may actually have predicted the future of gaming.

Ironically, this parody game is way too tame by current videogame standards, so it's lost a lot of it's bite and enjoyment. The game itself is... not great, honestly. The challenge comes from the speedrun achievements wich are a bit tough, but apart from that you're just kind of hugging every wall to find secret areas. The DLC isn't too great either- There are some better games if you're looking for a laugh and some decent gameplay.
