This is a one-of-a-kind roleplaying game. There are times when you have no choice but to fight, but the times when you can act to avoid fights or alter the battle before it starts are really amusing. There are times when you're rewarded for playing the game like a game and there are times when you're rewarded for taking matters seriously. I don't expect that this game warrants more than one playthrough, but it's a fun story with fun characters and elements that take advantage of and sometimes rewards individual curiosity. I wish beyond reasonable hope that another game with the kind of thoughtful design this exhibits will be made.

This game is okay. Dark Scavenger doesn’t really stand out that much, but it’s not bad either. The dialogue was somewhat fun and witty, though. It’s a shame that the developer has shut down.
Despite looking like it was made in MS Paint, the core mechanic and dialogue are really fun. Plus with all of the different ways items can be utilised there is a ton of replay-ability.

This is one of my favorite hidden gems on Steam, with fun combat that focuses on collecting items that can be used for combo attacks. You're constantly obtaining more items as you progress, which opens up more ways to experiment with combos. The writing is funny too.

This is a wonderfully bonkers adventure/rpg game. It's difficult to describe but it has wonderful characters and a great sense of humor. There are so many combinations of weapons and allies that it's worth playing multiple times too. I just read Psydra Games' announcement that they are closing down, so if you think you might like this game, be sure to buy it before it's gone forever.
This is a very unique game that combines RPG, interactive fiction, and adventure game elements. It feels like a digital version of one of those gamebooks (i.e. Fighting Fantasy, Lone Wolf, etc.) The setting is cynical and violent, but more campy than dark. There are a lot of cool touches, including hundreds of weapons, items, and allies to collect, each with their own effects and descriptions.

No one is going to be getting this game for its graphics, that's for sure, but what it lacks in visual appeal, it more than makes up for with humour, creativity, and a pretty interesting story. The ending was slightly disappointing, but that doesn't take away from the overall fun you'll have while going through the game. This, coupled with there being multiple - and by that I mean [i]tons of[/i] - ways to play this game to reach the most desirable ending, keeps the game fresh, always engaging, and gives you a sense of freedom, in that you can rest assured that whatever path you take, there (mostly) will be a way to rectify previously-made bad choices.
I loved most of all the crafting ability, where you get to choose some pretty wacky & laughable weapons/skills/allies that can end up working very well if you can figure out when/how to use them, and also the fact that there is a choice at almost every turn, that [i]does[/i] affect the outcome you get.
What an awesome experience this was! Not to mention, you can go back and replay the game multiple times, choosing different items to craft each time (the choices are plentiful & very varied), and choosing different story options.
If you're the type who loves old-school adventure games peppered with some basic (mostly logical) RPG-style combat, and appreciates exploring different builds for your character, I highly recommend you give this game a try.

An incredibly underrated indie RPG with a charming cast of characters and tons of player agency. Pure creative chaos with a simple but engaging combat system that is filled to the brim with bright flavor text. While the story isn't exactly anything masterful, its otherwise simple plot is greatly boosted by the characters you encounter and the various ways their stories can unfold based on your choices. I've absolutely fallen in love with this world and while it's never going to get the sequel it baited at the end, it is still a satisfying and self-contained narrative that is worth experiencing for anyone who wants a game that actually values player choice.
One of the greatest accomplishments this game has is the fact that every single choice matters, up to and including what you do with the various loot you find along the way. Each piece of loot has a branching choice to become a weapon, item, or ally, each coming with a generally humorous hint as to what it would be by your shipmates who can craft them. Each room has at least one piece of loot, but some rooms have I believe up to three, and selecting one piece of loot to become a weapon locks the other items out from becoming a weapon, which adds a further level of chaos and replayability to this game as you won't have the same loadout twice.
Because this is just a slightly more involved "choose your own adventure," pretty much every dialogue choice and action you take has consequences in both the short and long term. You can choose to be a classic Murderhobo with very little consequence, but there are plenty of smaller side stories that grow and evolve naturally through your interaction in the world, in various interesting and often funny scenarios that often interlink with each other that can then blossom into even more interesting interactions down the line. Even though I felt I was pretty thorough on my first playthrough and made efforts not to miss anything, I still never figured out what was up with the shell fruits I had been collecting and missed a few characters' resolutions along the way. Even then I saw through a wealth of smaller arcs and helped resolved grudges and disputes, for despite its otherwise goofy tone the story has some wonderful worldbuilding within its various inhabitants and cultures that greatly enriched the loads of minor characters you interact with.
While combat is fun, most situations are avoidable through smart dialogue choices, and its in that dialogue that you can help glean the larger plot unfolding well before you have the options for any sort of exposition dumping. The main cast of weirdos you align with aren't as often directly interactable, but because they also serve as minute to minute crafters, the game goes through great lengths to give them each distinct characteristics that make them memorable, if a bit two dimensional. The rotting skeleton warrior and his band of misfits are the titular Dark Scavengers, and each have their own utilities outside of crafting that you can utilize in dialogue and combat, but the really important thing to understand is just how good they all are at Ping Pong. The xenomorph lookin fella may be intimidating at first but in the end is probably my favorite of the three, where as the zoot-suit wearing mustachioed weirdo never really evolves past the description I just gave. The xenomorph, I believe his name is Gazer, is a nonverbal creature that can conjure you new allies, and he demonstrates who these allies might be through pantomime, making his crafting the most interesting and surprising as you always end up playing a game of charades to comprehend what you could get, and his interactions between chapters are often the most endearing.
The true star of the show here however is the writing, plain and simple. Bolstered by the often clashing yet effective art style, the game truly embodies a sense of order through chaos in its narrative that strengthens through each interaction. While the worldbuilding and characters are all things I've already praised, none of this would be able to come together so well if it wasn't for such a strong, never ending amount of quality writing that informs the dialogue and provides ample foreshadowing for things to come beat by beat. While the game is rife with humor, its within the humor that the heart of this scrappy indie game shines, as unfortunately the "big reveal" that you get during one of the optional endings falls rather flat to the narrative that came before, but even so while everything is treated with humor, nothing is purely a joke, and that's why I love this game. You can absolutely choose to be a jerk but every scenario allows you to treat even the lamest creatures with respect, and you will be treated with respect in turn. While there are some characters I went out of my way to kill, the best interactions were the ones I least expected to happen, and no interaction is the same.
The boss fights are often just boss fights, but each has an initial phase that allows you to sway the encounter in your favor, or make it far worse for yourself. If you befriend certain characters they may help you out or go out of their way to ruin you, and as always your choices have consequences for later on. The only time I was let down was after helping a rather nice kid out he fought with me against a terrifying beast, and I did everything I could to keep the little bro alive, only to find him killed off screen a little later on and not being able to do anything to show my appreciation. There are a handful of other interactions that can end up dissapointingly, but I can't confidently say if these were because of my choices or not.
Finally, be aware that while this is an older game, it does some rather tasteless humor in regards to a specific race of creatures who have a penchant for self-deleting. Not all of the humor lands and when its bad, it's just bad, but nothing ever comes off as truly "edgy" aside from that and has its tongue planted firmly in each cheek.
Tl;Dr While scrappy in its presentation, this is a buried gem through and through and really makes you feel like you're exploring an alien world, oozing charm from every corner and polished to a grimy sheen. It had some sequel bait that we never got to see, but the studio made another game a few years later that somehow flew even further under the radar than this one. I find this an incredible shame as the team making this are clearly talented and deserve support. Please check this and their other game out as I will be, as the clear skill and passion deserve more fanfare that what they've gotten. While you can wait for a sale, this game is well worth the small full price it asks for, and while an ultimately shorter experience landing near a 4 hour playthrough, there is a ton of replayability here in its spiderweb of narrative choices. Cannot recommend enough.

The characters are believable. One of the better steam games, definetely happy I`ve bought and beaten it.

Das Spiel ist Inde pur und hat für mich mit knapp 9 Stunden einen erstaunlich hohen Spielumfang gehabt.
Am meisten haben mir die Artworks gefallen, die einfach wunderschön skuril sind, sie sprühen geradezu vor kreativen Explosionen und viel Charme.
Die Story ist verrückt! Der klassische "Drogentrip", aber hoffentlich ohne ;) Wirklich sehr erfrischend. Viele große Titel und Studios könnten sich davon was abschneiden.
Einstellungen sind indemäßig minimal, das Spiel hat nicht mal nen Vollbildmodus, die Änderungen an den Standardeinstellungen resetten sich jedes Mal aufs Neue, aber im Grunde stört nur der sehr laute Sound bei Kämpfen etwas, da er sich schleifenmäßig wiederholt und irgendwann schmerzen die Ohren davon.
Die Items... wow... RPG-total, Schere, Stein, Papier und noch mehr. Auch hier fehlt es an Beschreibungen, Einführungen, Hinweisen, aber who cares. Wer das Spiel ernst angeht, findet sich schnell rein. Die Kämpfe sind fast alle fair, wenn es doch mal blöd läuft kann man ohne Probleme wieder von vorne beginnen.
Fazit: Dark Scavenger ist bizarr. Bizarr schön, bizarr witzig, bizarr anders. Von mir eine bizarre Spielempfehlung!

Su questo gioco bisogna intendersi: esso infatti appartiene a quella categoria di giochi che, attraverso meccanismi semplici, possono far vibrare piacevolmente le corde interne di un giocatore. Oppure no.
La categoria è quella dei giochi che presentano una grafica caratteristica ed interessante anche artistica ma non pretenziosa, da sembrare che giri anche sui vecchi Amiga; inoltre sfruttano meccaniche semplici, come quelle di questo gioco che pone il giocatore davanti ad incontri con personaggi e nemici stravaganti con dialoghi dello stesso tono e dà la possibilità di costruire oggetti tra i più strampalati possibili da usare in combattimento. Le recensioni sono un plebiscito di commenti positivi. Ma io non mi sono divertito. Mi è sembrato alla lunga noioso, ed inoltre c'è questo 'prepotente' inglese che non ci fa apprezzare completamente la dialettica, che è un punto forte del gioco: niente a che vedere con il nostro melodioso italiano così artistico, sontuoso e ricco.

Very fun and simple! I just started using Steam this year cause I got a new tablet and this is the only game out of ten or so that I tried and I enjoyed. Tablet games need to have simple controls to enjoy and this is so far is the most fun I've had.

Apparently I got the bad ending, just selected a question option for the hell of it and the game wouldn't let me continue from my save, instead making me start over from the beginning, nice stuff. Well, it's a beat anyhow, and not really one to my tastes. The game has it's set style of humour, reminds me of Douglas Adams' books to be honest. It got pretty difficult at points and I wanted to see what consequences other choices would've had, but you need multiple playthroughs for this. Still, if you're a fan of quirky humor and point-n-click-RPG mashups, I can definitely recommend this for a playthrough. It's got tons of character!

Dark Scavenger is a unique choose-your-own-adventure game with turn-based RPG combat.
You are saved from space by a crew of scavengers who promptly send you down to a nearby planet to find them some fuel. As you explore you are presented with lots of mini story events which give you decisions to make (e.g. you meet someone, do you act friendly or hostile?). Through these events, you slowly unravel the mysteries of the planet as well as accumulate lots of junk that your scavenger friends can turn into useful weapons and items for you.

I ended the game with a couple of items that I didn't even figure out how to use. The game sometimes asks you for certain types of items (something metal, something with the fire element etc) and you may simply not have one because how were you to know that you would need it? Items have limited uses which refresh each chapter but you don't know how long a chapter will be. I often ended up finishing the chapter with some of my best items unused because I didn't know whether I would need them or not. These issues don't really ruin the fun - they are minor annoyances.

Dark Scavenger is a weird little game in which you play through text adventures and JRPG-style battles. It has its own unusual style and setting, with all kinds of alien creatures and weird items. While i really liked it at first it gets progressively more annoying to find the right type of item (size/kind/type) in your inventory. Some symbols or colour-coding would've helped a lot. The balance is also rather wonky, i would've liked a more forgiving difficulty setting. It also just a tad too random for my taste. Still, its originality is to be praised. I can't think of any other game where your weapon deals more damage to people with their mouth wide open or people standing on one leg.
Don't judge a book by its cover. A diamond in the rough. A hidden gem. An excellent text based RPG adventure with point n click illustrations. Assets gained throughout play can be be converted into weapons, items and allies. Don't look at a guide for the conversions. It's part of the charm. A++

И тем не менее, игра чертовски хороша. Отчасти из-за колоритнейших персонажей, и даже некоторых сюжетных твистов. Отчасти - из-за очень оригинальной боевой системы и системы решения проблем, когда игрок пользуется ограниченными по количеству предметами и оружием (все предметы, за исключением собственных кулаков, имеют ограниченное количество раз применения на карту). При этом дефицита не наблюдается, так как из всякого собираемого мусора коллеги-ремесленники могут изготовить разнообразнейшие предметы. При решении проблем применение предметов ограничивается их свойствами - например, чтобы разрубить что-то, нужен острый предмет, чтобы поджечь - огненный.

You read some dialogue, click on things in a room to get more dialogue, make some choices.
There's some turn based JRPG style battles. When you move from one room to another and have received a new object or whatever, you consult with your 3 ship-mates who will have a vague description of what it will be when you pick one of them to change it, and then gain a new Weapon, Item, or Ally from that thing.
For instance you can gain a spear, but make an Ally out of it, and when used in combat, it will be a person who attacks for you. I regret not being able to explain how something will change based on who you give it to change it, but it's an interesting mechanic. You can use some of them even in some room scene choices occasionally.
The game is auto-save only, and it saves with each room passed, and some other decisions. But the save file can be easily found in the documents folder if you want to back it up at the beginning of the final chapter. Hint Hint.
That way I was able to see what happens if I went one way, instead of fighting the boss first, and see the ending I got there, then copy paste the file and go fight the final boss and get the real ending.
If you die, you can choose to restart the battle, if a battle, or restart the room, or restart the chapter. There's 5 chapters total.
I actually started playing this several years ago and just decided to finish it today, but I'm glad I decided to start it up again. It took me like 6-7 hours to finish, and I enjoyed the time, with the game costing $5. There's a New Game+ I see on the menu after finishing, but I'm not sure what the deal with that is, so I can't really speak about it.
If the store page seems interesting and you have the money & time to spare, or especially if you see it on sale, I thought it was interesting.
A unique RPG / clicker that could definitely use more polish and a bigger budget. It has a fun inventory/battle system and is good enough to warrant recommending it.
This game is quite surprising. Quite the definition of looks can be deceiving, at least game wise. The game looks like a developer's first video game, but the story and gameplay subvert those expectations, as both were enjoyable.
This game was quite funny and the turn-based combat was engaging and made me think about moves. I especially like the limited amount of moves for each piece of equipment, as it really makes you think about your combat choices. The menu-ing did feel a bit weird though, although I never really had a notable problem with it. Just feel.
The story isn't good, but it isn't bad either. The plot makes sense, and those in your path are quite silly and memorable. However, the character Den was kind of weird and felt tacked-on. He really just felt inserted in the beginning and end. The design of the characters were all pretty cool as well. Character art is good, but the backgrounds were quite bland.
I beat this game in 1.5 hours. I don't have an issue with the amount of hours I got out of this game based on the price, as they were enjoyable. However, if you have issues with hours per dollar spent perhaps get this on sale.

a weird game that some might like: a point and click turn based combat loot game. I hate point and click. I hate turn based. But the game sounded interesting so i gave it a try.
Very basic graphics. Lot of text reading. Does offer choices of how to deal with different enemies. They are real choices because they change how things happen and outcomes. But the things happening aren't very interesting.
the game has a check point save system that allows you to restart what you did a minute ago. So you won't be loosing a lot of time replaying the same boring things over and over. So you only need to be bored once before moving on to the next boredom.
Combat is turn based that allows you to pick use of a device, weapon, or ally. Each weapon, device, and ally has a very limited number of uses before you lose them forever. The turns go much quicker than the far superior Fallout turned based games. Which is good, because it offers so much less than those great games.
This sounds worse than it is. Every combat drops loot. That loot can be made into a weapon, device, or ally. This feature is really interesting and the one strong point of the game. Who doesn't love loot? Who doesn't love having that loot be immediately valuable? This feature makes the game almost worth recommending. Not quite.
Do these things sound interesting to you? If so, give it a try. I bought the game before Steam's refund system was in place so i got stuck with it. Still, i didn't pay a lot of money for it. I got more burned from buying the last Mass Effect game than i did buying this game. With the refund system, you can see for yourself.
Would likely get you an A+ if you did this as a high school project.
This game has cheap design, cheap visuals, cheap soundtrack, cheap effects, cheap story, cheap characters, cheap universe and cheap price as well. YET I assure you it also is : simple, efficient, surprising, absurd, hilarious, funny, not overbearing, not pretending and deeper than it seems.
In a way, I found the game cool and intense both in its gameplay and storyline. It is so simple yet stimulating at the same time.
You have to like the genre, which is heavily inspired from Chose your own adventures book. In fact, it probably is the best CYOA-like game I've ever played for now. It's not like your Choice of Games novel, it really keeps itself to the book feeling while making it go a level higher thanks to technology.
The characters are gripping and the ending is a blast. You can feel the developpers loved their work. It takes something like a whole day to finish and it even got a new game+ features.

When I first started playing this game I could not stop. Played way too late into the night. However, when I'm not playing it, it doesn't constantly try to beguile me back. I love playing it when I think of it, but I can easily forget about it, which is my loss.
A hidden gem on Steam; the art style is unique, and the characters are charming and memorable. The item-crafting mechanic does wonders for replayability.

this game looks like a amateur game developer's first project and as if it was made in 1980's. i shocked when i learned this game actually was made in 2012. it looks so old and ugly. gameplay is also not enjoyable and background music is annoying.

TLDR: Aloof and flavorful. Might appeal to some. Turn based combat on slides. The action flow and audiovisual quality disappointed me.
This is arguably a step up from many of the dungeoncrawl from yesteryears. With color art and dialogue trees. However the user interface kept opening and closing windows when hovering buttons. The fights would drag out quite a bit due to low damage and high hit point creatures. The audio work was not really to the quality I would have hoped and the art itself was not exactly of superb quality.
The setting is very hodgepodge with a lot of creatures thrown in. If you get your intrigued it might carry you along for the ride but in my case the hook did not really sink in.

An event-based adventure with a turn-based RPG combat system.
General gameplay:
There is a series of rooms where you scan for things to click on (they're highlighted when you mouse over them). If you click on an event something will happen (like someone appears or you investigate/interact with the item) and you do a small series of choose-your-action (from 2-3 choices) that ends up with you getting loot, taking damage/healing, going into a fight, or a combination of the above. Move through the rooms, do events, collect loot, and face the boss at the end of the map.
The combat system works like this:
It's simple turn-based combat (alternate between you and the enemy) but you can only 'attack' by using items that you collect during the adventure. For example, a generic weapon would do a range of melee-type damage (based on if they're weak/resistant), have a chance to stun on hit, and might have an element attached to it.
Those items have durability (which only refreshes at the end of a chapter) so you want to spread out and conserve usage (You also spend item uses on event option/choices so you want to keep a variety of stuff in case it's needed for an event).
However, you can't always try to reserve your best items for the bosses because health recovery is also limited (so you can't always do the free weak fist/punch attack and bleed HP in exchange for saving durability).
I wouldn't enjoy the game as it was intended to be played (which is more like old-school difficulty). If you don't do an event 'properly' (which is not always by the obvious choice) you'll take unnecessary damage, be forced into an unnecessary fight, or miss out on the loot to replenish your ever-depleting supply. You're meant to fail and remember the correct event choices for your next run (which may take many tries for long event sequences!). Health is also a precious resource because you're very limited in ways to restore health (there aren't many recovery items, you have to trade equipment durability for health with the water-healer, and you have to stun many enemies to naturally refill the health potion which means lots of durability). Also, the game autosaves after everything you do and there's only one save slot. Not optimizing your run can mean you will be forced to restart the whole chapter (or more!).
So to better suit my tastes I restarted the game very often (which refills your health potion(!) and lets you create equipment of the same type from loot from the same room) and I save scummed all game. Saves are just plain text in ANSI character encoding (mostly- there was a part in chapter 1 that used OEM 866 for some reason). So you can just copy-paste save codes (or whole files).
Worth a look if you like fail-and-repeat-many-times-until-you-get-a-good-run adventures or are computer-savvy (and patient) enough to save scum. Reminds me a little of Sorcery! in that there are events and you collect key items which unlock dialogue/action options. However, in this game combat is handled differently and events aren't guided/linked as those in Sorcery!, they're more isolated.

The game consists of five chapters. It automatically saves after each chapter, so be prepared to have enough time to finish one chapter. Each chapter consist of rooms, a scene present to you where there are several objects to examine. Examining an object may only give a brief description or can lead you to a mini-adventure or encounter. Most of this is done through text where the player has an avarega of three options to choose from. After ineracting with an object you may receive a reward (loot for crafting or for use in a specific scenario). Each time you enter a new room you can decide what to turn your loot into: a weapon, an item or an ally. Your crafting friends give a, sometimes very vague (for me often amusing), description of the result. All weapons, items and allies have a certain amount of use, which only replenishes when starting a new chapter. You can use these equipments and their combinations to fight your enemies in turn based combat and during scenarios when interacting with objects (such as when you fall into a dark place you may use a light emitting weapon or item to help you out). You can return to rooms previously visited within the same chapter. At the end of each chapter there is a boss, or more.
It took me 12 hours to finish the game, as opposed to the 4-5 hours written by other reviwers, and I only needed to repeat one room. I tried to explore everything and I probably took my time considering the combination of equimpents to tackle the enemies with.

Pretty much everything is inanimated. Movement is presented by shifting the picture of characters on the screen. I can understand it is not for everyone but I found amusing that when someone fell according to the text the picture was turned to its side to represent it. So it is simple looking, but the drawings show creativity and are colourful.
[b]Story and characters:[/b]
Some of the story elements are light hearted or outright silly but there are ones of deeper meaning and complex implications. I found the characters and the world well designed and interesting. The player is introduced a new planet. with its own rules and a couple of alien races, which all have distinct trairs. There are quite a lot of characters, and all have their own (quirky) personalities.
[b]Music and sounds:[/b]
The sounds are very simple, minimalistic I could say but it didn't bother me. The combat music I found unusual at first what's with its rapid pace and use of (electric ?) quitar in comparison to the melancholic opening theme. The musics are short, and the same melody is reused over the course of one encounter but all matches the ocassion well in my opinion. The use of piano is a plus for me.

All in all I really enjoyed this game. It made me laugh several time with its absurd scenarios, witty lines and silly graphics. The combat though simple had enough variety to not make me get bored of it during the playthrough. And the story, which I definitely thought to be its strength, is something that will stay with me for a while I know. For me it definitely worthed the money and time I spent on it.
This is probably a game for a specific use scenario. If you want a challenging game of reflexes and speed then this genre is obviously the wrong place to be looking, just as it is if you want a game of deep thought and strategy. However if you want something vaguely silly, and you have plenty of spare time then this is a time filler that does not take a great deal of attention to play. There are those times when you can't be bothered to get your stuff set up right to do some serious gaming, and those times when you are too tired to be bothered to focus, but you just want something that will occupy your mind for a while. That is the kind of time when this game might fit into your schedule well; like a sort of digital game of patience.
For me that kind of time is when I am feeling a bit under the weather, like while I am recovering from flu. Those times when I don't have the strength or energy for anything, but doing nothing is incredibly tedious, and the noise from the television or radio is plain annoying, then I imagine this game could be a potential saviour. The choices to be made are not particularly complex, and the requirement for physical activity is extremely low, so it would be possible to just sit back and follow the path that the game's creator has set for you.
The humour in the game is unusual and quirky, and in some ways reminds me of Douglas Adams, which is about the highest praise I could give this game. It is the sort of thing that could gain real benefit from sharing the experience with friends. If you know a number of people who are also playing the game around the same time as you, I can quite imagine you all laughing at whatever bizarre thing the game comes up with next. In fact the experience of playing the game would be greatly improved by playing it in the company of friends. Without that sharing of the experience it kind of feels as though you are descending into a rabbit hole of surrealism, and you don't really know why.
There are plenty of hints throughout the game as to what would make the best next choice. When there aren't hints there are very clear clues when something would not be such a good idea. Saying that, I actually feel almost like going back in and trying out some of the apparently awful ideas, just to see what happens. There are clearly going to be better and worse way of doing things, but I am not sure whether the best decisions can overwhelmingly triumph, or whether the elements of random chance can throw a spanner in the works no matter which decisions you make.
I actually think that the game would benefit from throwing out a lot of the game play and replacing it with more story telling. I am reminded of the books of Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone, which I played a lot when I was younger, and typically I would consider a lost fight to have been a game save so that I could simply continue with the reading of the story instead of starting over. If a lot more effort was put into the story and artwork then I think this would be a lot better game because it really is much more like interactive fiction, but due to the effort to make it a game, it has had a great deal less attention paid to the development of the story and the crafting of the literary element.
Over all, considering how many games there are on Steam I find it difficult to recommend this game. After playing for just over an hour it did not grab me enough to pull me back in again. This would clearly have been an issue that would have easily been solved by focussing more on the literary aspect, and less on the element of chance. However, having said this, at present this game is on sale for only 79p. When compared to the price of games on iOS or Android this game is a steal at that price. I bought this game as part of a package on HumbleBundle, which means it slipped into my library with a number of other games; in that instance it is similarly a bargain. In addition, this game benefits over anything with a similar pricing on iOS or Android in that it doesn't shove advertising at you, or ask for permissions, or extra purchases off of you. In comparison it is a lot better than a great many games with far greater polish on those platforms, and I would rate it more highly than some games that have been advertised on television; it has a great deal more respect for the player.
To sum up, although I do not recommend it, and particularly not at its full price, I do get the impression that it is on sale fairly often, in which case it might be worth buying, just to satisfy curiosity. Many years ago, in simpler times, people would play games like Zork, and the Hobbit on simple 8bit machines. I do not know how well those games would stand up in this modern world of Call of Duty, and the distractions of the internet, but they did captivate their audience as wonders of the modern world of computing. How this game would stand up against those is difficult to say after all these years, but playing this did remind me of the evenings I spent playing those many years ago. I know I enjoyed those games, even though they did not have graphics, or had graphics far poorer than Dark Scavenger. Perhaps a new generation of young players might consider this game to be on a similar plateau as those old classics. Unfortunately, I am not that young any more, and experience of decades of computing has taken me far away from my original discovery of the adventure games of old. Despite that, I still find those old games enjoyable, and I wonder if this game will fulfil the same purpose for the young gamers of today. It is for them to decide as it is priced for their pockets. If I was 11 or 12 years old then this would certainly have been a game I would have purchased back then, but as an aging middle aged man, I know it is no longer for me.
Fighting Fantasy if it decided to use Lexx, Discworld, and surreal sci-fi instead of borrowing from DnD modules. Pretty good. Well worth the $5. Manual Samuel is another off the wall adventure/visual novel game in a similar-ish vein. Or if you want a JRPG made by damaged people, try Earth Birth.

I picked this up in a sale on a whim and was very pleasantly surprised. It's a point and click adventure with combat and it's quirky and fun af. Other reviewers have mentioned choose-your-own-adventure books and I agree; most encounters give you several choices on how to proceed and appear to have consequences. Your equipment is made from the various things you find in your travels and you can choose between turning said items into weapons, consumables, or allies, so battles never feel samey. The character designs are creative and the areas you visit are perfectly serviceable for what they're intended. My only real complaint is that the game isn't longer; there's a great deal of potential in the universe as given and it would be nice if this were just the first adventure in a series. Ah well, maybe someday.

There is something about this game that I find repulsive. It's an interesting idea. It's executed well. It's quirky and jovial. It's bizzare. But, none of that is working. It just isn't right. I can't figure out what I don't like but I also can't figure out what I do like. I feel like I'm just clicking through a bunch of immature jokes and loosely garbled together anachronistic "weird fiction" storytelling. I don't get it. Maybe you do or maybe you will. I think the deciding point on this game is: if you think you will like it then you probably will.
Within a crumbling bandit fortress, I came across a room strewn with corpses. One lone bandit emerged from the darkness, and from the available dialog options I chose “So you’re the sole survivor?” That prompted a second one to appear, to which I replied “So you’re both the sole survivors?” One more showed up, and of course I said “So you’re all the sole survivors?” and then had to fight all three. Dark Scavenger is that kind of game, the kind where the funny options are going to get you in trouble, but they’ll be entirely worth it. And it’s entirely worth exploring every inch of this odd title, because there’s more creativity and wonder crammed into it than most games twice its size.
After a particularly jarring start adrift in space with some cosmic horror, you find yourself among the Dark Scavengers. This motley crew wanders from planet to planet, collecting junk and turning it into weapons and gear to better loot additional planets with. They’re stuck at the moment, lacking a fuel supply to keep rambling with, and it’s up to you to descent to the planet below and find one. Said planet is in the middle of a clan war, though, between bandits and assassins and artisans and the bizarre wildlife. The struggle culminates in a showdown at the bandit stronghold where secrets of existence will be revealed, alliances will be tested, and choices will determine the fate of the planet.
I’m not exaggerating, either. What starts as a kooky adventure through the undergrowth of an alien world will take you right to the heart of all life that has blossomed upon it. The factions involved are going for broke, the mad science has been pushed to its limits, and the apocalypse may or may not be at hand. You’ll have loads of choices to make on your way to the finale, all of which affect who lives, who dies, who gets their comeuppance, and of course how easy a time you’re going to have of it. There are secret plotlines to follow if you can find them, and some enemies can be made full allies if you play your cards right. I’m avoiding specifics here but the story is shockingly dynamic and is packed with clever twists you need to see for yourself.
Equally clever is the combat and inventory system built around this story, mentioned together because of how closely they are related. On most screens you can score two or three loot items by clicking around and making semi-educated choices. Loot can then be converted into usable gear by your three Dark Scavenger buddies. One makes weapons that do damage, one makes items that produce useful effects, and one make allies that have far-ranging impacts on battle. Each loot item can be made into any of the three, but you have to choose which one based on the weird descriptions you get from your pals. A dog collar might become a lasso, a shock collar, or an alien beastmaster depending on how you use it. Whatever you make has a set number of uses per chapter, and has traits and elements that determine its effectiveness in battle.
The gear you make isn’t just for fighting, though. During dialog or while exploring you’ll get the option to use your gear to address certain challenges. Maybe you can pry something open with a pointed weapon, or call a swift ally to catch you if you’re falling. The more prepared you are with a diverse set of tools, the more likely you are to pass obstacles and find even more goodies. Late in the game you’ll face gauntlets of these prompts so you’ll want a good spread of weapons and items and allies to prepare for any possibility. It’s a brilliant system that rewards players for being just as creative as the game that offers such options, and I never tired of the weird creations.
I could pick at the edges of Dark Scavenger, like how it’s only two hours long or how the graphics remind me of cheap Choose Your Own Adventure illustrations (funny, that). But I won’t, because this game proved far more entertaining and engaging than most adventures I’ve sat through. The unique systems reward exploration and experimentation, and the story goes from curious to compelling as you reveal more of the wild plot. I can’t compliment the writing enough, peppering the game with memorable scenes and characters that are sure to elicit more than a few chuckles. My only regret is not jumping on this one sooner, because Dark Scavenger is excellent in every way that an adventure should be.

This game leaves me speechless, but in all the right ways. This game in no ways is perfect, but it is fun and is an enjoyable "choose your actions" story.
The graphics are "low budget" but if anything help add to the atmosphere. This game is unquie in the way that it makes you feel many emotions all at once. Anger from the mindless comabt, fear from the very nice and creepy designs, or freindship with the many idenitfiable characters. I personally like Falsen from the game. This game is very funny and enjoyable for some relax time or to continue an actually interesting story line between rival nations and the people in this world. I recommend this game, but it would be better to buy it during a sale.

You can see how the devs loved to create the characters; they are unique and weirdly lovable. You are able to decide how to react to different situations and find secrets. The story was short but well told.
Only thing that could use a little improvement is the interface. To the end you have to scroll through all your items to klick the one you are looking for. Not that bad and you get used to it, but yeah.
Overall I highly recommend this game if you are looking for a nice timewaster that leaves you happy at the end. 8/10

The concepts of this game are very enticing and so are the simplistic mechanics involved. I truly enjoyed this experience and I'm not done yet. I have more adventures to go on, and more chapters to complete.
[h1] Story [/h1] You wind up with some weird creature that talks to you and you end up floating in space. Than you get picked up by alien beings calling themselves the Dark Scavengers. They want you to go get fuel and it goes on from there.
With various choices, and the possibilities to outsmart the enemy, or to pay attention to what is being said helps you to achieve victory.
I found what i saw so far to be interesting, but yet somewhat dry. The humor is great don't get me wrong, but the story drags just a tiny bit. Still i'm interested in seeing what else happens in the long run and how the story could possibly progress from here. Needless to say, I was hooked and I want more. The story has me curious where it all leads. I like how one of the characters is completely and utterly mute, yet still manages to express himself in other interesting fashions.
For this and for other various reasons captivated by the story I give it a [h1]Score[/h1] of an 8.7 out of 10.
[h1]Game Mechanics[/h1] The game's control scheme is extremely easy to use and involves only the mouse to do pretty much everything. It's simplicity knows no bounds and makes for a fun adventure, very useful when you are facing a good chunk of enemies. on the other hand, clicking everything with only the mouse button gets a teensy bit boring, but not so boring that you aren't interested in what's going on around you. There are a variety of things you can use, but it's mostly click this, click that mentality. That's basically what i've been doing throughout four chapters, making choices and clicking on options and choices and the like. So because of that I'm going to give the game mechanics a [h1]Score[/h1] of 6.9 out of 10.
[h1]Sounds and music[/h1] There's a decent amount of tracks to keep you engaged in the story, sounds are decent, but the music was really good. and it was nice that they play more than one song for you during the adventure. It compliments the game nicely and gives it a good surreal type of feel. Once in a while it would have been nice to hear more but what's already here is good enough for me. Maybe add like some more battle sounds perhaps that would be kinda nice. [h1]Score[/h1] 7 out of 10.
[h1]Visuals[/h1] Okay now here is where the game truly shows what it can do. These pieces of artwork are very cool and very detailed and I liked looking at every single one that I saw. The visiauls really help outline the story and the visuals here are great. There are vibrant colors, there are awesome looking alien species, and while the clans themselves resemble and possibly copy in order of art design, they still look really cool.
There was a lot of detail given to the maps and the places you can explore, there was all kinds of manner of interesting creatures and hues and shades here and there that touched upon the different parts of this place. The developer spent a lot of time on the art here and it shows. It really, really shows. There is color almost everywhere that i explored (except in certain instances like the darkness). [h1] Overall Gameplay Fun [/h1] So based on my 3 hours of gameplay so far and my 4 chapters of success, I can honestly say i had a lot of fun, there's a good amount of reading to do in this game, and yes the game can get a tiny bit tiresome in regards to the constant using of the mouse but that's why you take a break from gaming every now and again. I most certainly recommend this game for families even if it is a one player experience, you can enjoy the humor in it. It's probably more suitable for kids above the age of 10 who have been exposed to tv and stuff because a few of the creatures in the game are wild and ferocious looking.

Falsen is terrifying... but this game is a quirky, ominous point-and-click title with simple, charming graphics and a gritty UI that reminds me of the first few Resident Evil titles on PS1. I like the ambient sounds, leaves rustling in the wind and cold, dank cavernous drones give the environments depth. The dialogue and combat log are top-notch lmao
The player finds himself floating in space only to be confronted by a cosmic entity that leaves the protagonist floating defenselessly in space. Once picked up by a trio of crafty extraterrestrials, you're beamed down to a savage planet of immense energies to refuel their ship and escape certain doom. Turn Caramelized Bones into cowboy badges and overwhelm bandits by shouting them into confusion, get brained by maces and weave between giant metal fingers.

А, собственно игра напоминает старенькие покемоны с пошаговой системой боя. Текстовая наполняющая весьма неординарна, и больше тяготеет даже к текстовым квестам, хоть и не дотягивает до их уровня. Часто надо думать, что применить из инвентаря, например, какой предмет является пустой колбой, какой тяжёлым и тд. Причём в описании предметов этого не отображено, нужного предмета иногда может вообще не быть из-за вариативности прокачки. Некоторые оружия также имеют забавные свойства: например, дрель, которая наносит урон врагам с широко открытым ртом; бола, которая станит врагов с двумя ногами, или оружие, которые наносит больше урона врагам с высоким интеллектом.
В игре есть сюжет, в большей степени он разворачивается к концу, и имеет, можно сказать, даже философско-драматичноую подоплёку. В общем и целом, игра стоит, чтобы её пройти, для тех кого не отпугивает архаичность средств выражения и относительно небольшой размер)

Dark Scavenger is an odd game. It's like you mixed together a turn-based first person perspective RPG, an adventure game, and Dungeons & Dragons in a sci-fi setting. By that, I mean that the combat is like Dragon Quest in terms of perspective, but you use items, weapons, and allies/summons with limited uses per area, when regen after completing a chapter, even if fully exhausted to zero, and every room/screen has things to inspect which trigger events where you can attempt to save someone, hide from enemies, obtain a hard-to-reach item, etc. Attempting to just naturally succeed without using an item/weapon/item/something you found is almost guaranteed to fail, as best I can tell, so using the items that you dislike the most is the most profitable way to handle events.
Each event will typically lead to you obtaining a crafting material, and you have 3 persistent allies who you can have craft items/weapons/allies out of the objects you find in each room/area. I believe my only serious complaint about the game comes from their descriptions of what they will make. They're incredibly vague. The weapons guy is typically easy to understand, but the items guy is basically insane and rarely makes sense about what he's saying, and the allies guy tries to act out what he'll make for you. He chased me around at one point, and he made a tiger for me as a summon. How the hell was "chases you around the room" supposed to let me know it was a tiger? For all I know, it could've been a child wanting to play tag. Since you don't get do-overs with a crafting material, this is problematic.
Like I said, though, that's literally my only real gripe about the game. The music is pretty nice; especially some piano music at the very beginning, and the artwork really worked for the game. I only played a little bit into the second chapter, but it seems to be a well-made game, and the D&D-like events are pretty nice. I won't deny that the game does have a definite "one-note" quality in regard to how it is played. You are in a room, you click on every thing, make choices on what item/weapon/ally to exhaust a use to have success, hopefully get crafting components, maybe do a turn-based battle, leave the room, craft 1-3 objects, then repeat forever.
For me, that did make me get bored with the game, but I'm pretty demanding when it comes to being kept entertained. It's a fine line between me feeling like a game was genuinely boring to the point that I felt tortured, and simply being a little less exciting/interesting than others so that my own desire for entertainment got me amped up for playing something different. I feel like Dark Scavenger was more the latter sort of experience. I do not plan on completing the game, but it has my blessing, for what it's worth. I disagree with people saying $4.99 not on sale is too high a price, though. I had a fried chicken sandwich the other day that cost almost $7 USD, and it was absolutely terrible. I could grab a McChicken and this game for less than that hauntingly awful nearly $7 sandwich and be far happier.

After looking at the store page and the reviews for [i]Dark Scavenger[/i], I wasn't sure what to make of this game so I never came around to buying it. When my friend [url=http://store.steampowered.com/curator/28971565/]Athravan[/url] from [url=http://steamcommunity.com/groups/ReviewersGuild]The Reviewers' Guild[/url] had a spare key, I was happy I could give [i]Dark Scavenger[/i] a try.
The developer describes [i]Dark Scavenger[/i] as "a bizarre point-and-click RPG adventure", which is quite accurate. [i]Dark Scavenger[/i] plays like a fully-illustrated 'choose your own adventure' game based on the 'choices matter' principle with old school turn-based RPG-like combat and even a loot system, so it does seem to be an RPG at its core.
It's a unique game, that's for sure. If you think you may be interested in the type of game described above, I certainly recommend picking up [i]Dark Scavenger[/i], especially if it's on sale. It'll provide at least 4 hours of fun for one playthrough, and more if you make use of its replayability. Or you can pick up the demo version on Steam to check out the first chapter of the game. If you decide to purchase the game after that, your save file will carry over so you can simply continue your adventure after the demo.
[h1]Story[/h1]
At the start of the game, you find yourself adrift in space and attacked by a shapeless blob that's both enormous and intelligent. After that encounter, a group of strange creatures who call themselves 'dark scavengers' pick you up with their spaceship. Problem is: the ship urgently needs refueling. There's a planet nearby but it might be a dangerous place and the dark scavengers tell you they're lousy fighters so they send you down to the planet to go scavenge for any source of energy that can be used as fuel.
The dark scavengers are uniquely strange creatures. The planet you'll explore looks pretty normal at first sight (I mean, you'll see grass, trees, lakes and ruins and they're all the 'right' size and colours and such) but by contrast, the creatures that inhabit the planet are out of this world – if you'll pardon the pun. This makes for weird but interesting encounters as you go adventuring through this unknown place.
[h1]Gameplay[/h1]
The game is divided into five chapters, although the last chapter consists of little more than the final boss fights. In each chapter, you'll explore a different part of the planet you're on. To you, the player, this looks as follows. You see a scene with several interactable objects. Clicking on such an object triggers an event. Each event may lead to finding an item, encountering an npc to talk to, getting into a fight, and so on.
When you're done with the current scene, you choose where to go next by clicking on an arrow pointing north, south, east or west, if available. At any time you can access a map that keeps track of the scenes you visited and shows where you are now, which makes finding your way around the game world effortless.
If you gathered any loot from a scene, before entering the next scene you'll find yourself back on the spaceship where your shipmates can craft useable items from the loot you found. The crafted item can be a weapon, a summonable ally or a consumable item that'll buff or heal you. You only get a vague description of the kind of item each of your shipmates can make from any given piece of loot, so you'll need to try to choose wisely.
Combat takes place through a tactical interface and is turn-based. Each turn you can use one or more consumable items and you need to use one of your weapons or your summonable allies to attack the enemy. Each weapon, item and ally has very distinct effects and has limited uses, making the combat quite strategic and the possibilities legion. At the start of each chapter, all your items' uses are replenished. So the choices you make about which items to craft have a long-term impact on the game, as well.
During your adventures on the planet, you'll also be required to make choices in all sorts of situations. You really get the feeling that these choices matter. Not every decision you make has a huge impact, of course, but most of the time you do notice an immediate consequence to your actions. And the other times, the consequence may or may not become clear later on in the game, depending on which way you choose to handle things in future situations.
Often, you can't help but wonder 'What if I had chosen one of the other options?'. This adds replayability to the game. Also, after you finish the game a new option called 'New game +' appears in the game menu. This allows you to start a new game with all the items you gathered in your previous playthrough, allowing you to craft different items from the loot this time around.
[h1]Graphics and sound[/h1]
The graphics are pretty basic and mostly static, but they're decent enough to serve their purpose. It's clear a lot of heart and talent went into the creature design. Almost all of them look truly unique and interesting. I would have liked to see some more creature [b]animation[/b] during combat, though, but I do realise things like that are very time-consuming and we are talking about an indie production here.
The music is strange but characteristic because it fits the strange atmosphere of the game, and it sounds very original.
Sound effects are okay but I would have liked more of them. A lot of actions that are described to the player and some combat actions that you see happening would have been so much more impressive if they had been accompanied by a fitting sound effect. I suppose this also shows the time and budget restrictions of an indie production.

This was something different.I felt like my choices mattered, like a replay would be worth my time, and that there was a level of skill and planning required.
This game rewards you for paying attention to multiple layers of input. It has clever mechanisms which make boss battles quite dramatic and entertaining, full of dialogue and meaningfl choices.
This is a game you play 1 handed, with mouse only. So grab a drink, or whatever is your poison and play.
