While this game is free and doesn't cost you a dime to play, I still can't fully recommend it.
This game does well at providing a strong horror ambience and some well-timed jumpscares (especially in the graveyard girl ending route).
However, I found this game to be deeply deeply annoying to play overall. The puzzles are unclear and vague. Traversing the hallways are slow, tedious and sometimes disorienting; you cannot run at all. The plot is vague and doesn't really make any sense. There's no writing that properly world builds what is going on.
It arguely could be chalked up to having alot of surreal elements that leads the story to be confusing, but i've played other games that sustain abstract ideas while still allowing the player to make sense of what their role is in the narrative. This was not true for this game so keep that in mind.
Also if you endeavour to completionist this game please keep in mind that even with a guide following the steps to 100% this game unclear and confusing because of the layout of the main house and other areas. I was trying to finish it despite my frustration and just gave up because it didn't feel worth it anymore.
And most agrrevatingly is the graveyard girl levels. You can lose and die by mere hairs and weird timing of the enemy characters in this game within the game. It is so unclear sometimes where you are supposed to go and how much longer you have to do these repetative levels. I pushed through and was able to complete it but i did not find it enjoyable at all.
If none of what I said deters you or doesn't matter to you than go ahead play this game and i hope you enjoy.
Just a major miss for me.

Spotkałem się z wieloma krytykami za moją (przyznaję) skąpą recenzję gier z serii Amnesia i choć rozumiem, że były to bezużyteczne recenzje, Close Your Eyes pokazało mi dokładnie to, co chciałem o nich powiedzieć, ale nie wiedziałem, czego szukam.
Bardzo chciałem pokochać serię Amnesia; myślę, że wiele gier z gatunku horror kryje w sobie piękne historie, ale wszystkie są niegrywalne. Możesz nazywać mnie tchórzem, jakkolwiek chcesz, ale jump scare'y NIE są zabawne. To NIE horror. To tylko mimowolny odruch wymuszony przez ekstremalne bodźce. Prawdziwy horror sprawia, że czujesz się nieswojo, boisz się, nieswojo i niespokojnie. Jasne, czasami możesz podskakiwać, ale to dlatego, że sam sobie to zrobiłeś. Gra nie błysnęła ci w oczy ani nie towarzyszył jej mrożący krew w żyłach warkot, nie, atmosfera wpędza cię w bardzo niebezpieczne miejsce mentalne i zaczynasz dostrzegać i przewidywać rzeczy na własną rękę. Właśnie to jest w Close Your Eyes; chcę, żeby było tego tak dużo na rynku, że nawet nie wiem, jak się wyrazić. Od samego początku czułem się nieswojo, świat był mroczny i uproszczony, a mój umysł wypełniały szczegóły, które mogły, a mogły nie istnieć. Projekt dźwiękowy i dubbing były mrożące krew w żyłach i trafione w punkt, wywołując niezliczone dreszcze i przypływ adrenaliny. Close Your Eyes to jedno z najlepszych horrorów, jakie miałem okazję ostatnio oglądać. I jakby tego było mało, jest DARMOWE. Nie ma powodu (poza obawami o treści dla dorosłych), dla którego ktokolwiek miałby przegapić szansę na wypróbowanie tej gry. Brawo, twórcy, brawo.

Close Your Eyes looks and sounds scary and creates incredibly heavy atmosphere. The player gets to know the bare minimum in terms of story and begins to explore increasingly abstract, surreal, bizzare and overall creepy environments in what seems to be the journey towards deep self. As a self-proclaimed seasoned veteran of RPGMaker(-ish) horror games I must say that this game made the best first impession on me, especially in terms of aforementioned aspects. It's utterly unpredictable, it's not afraid to throw a jumpscare when the player doesn't expect a thing and the devs seem to exactly know when to strike. For me that makes a top-class horror though the sudden scares tend to get a little exaggerated.
Now however comes the ugly part: the game never proceeds to make any more sense than it does at the beginning. Of course, you get some more story stuff while progressing (in the form of various well-delivered scenes - more on that later), but it is very lacking. Without spoiling anything but fittingly describing the problem: after arriving at a couple of endings on my own and watching the rest on YouTube I can say there is simply nothing to spoil here. You watch the stuff unfolding before your eyes, always arriving to more questions than answers and the chain of "events" suddenly terminates, since you inevitably make the story end. All the locations also match this pattern: you go through multiple places, equal to one another in their surrealism without any sense of progression and the spectacle suddenly dies out. I find this an unskippable flaw: the story is the soul of games like this and it has to see conclusion. And I don't mean that it has to shake off its abstract face. The resolution could take many forms, you can make it open-ended and vague. As it is now, the game is like it's cut in half waiting in suspention for any progress. An "obstacle course" would be a more fitting name for all this, not a "story", bringing us to the next topic - the obstacles.
Those are bad. There are barely any puzzles and those that are present gatekeep the player from progress varying in their status from "simple roadblock" to "unbearable". They aren't clever and it's clear to see they weren't meant to be taken as a main dish, or even a side dish here. All of them are an annoyance, but I can't quite say what exactly is wrong with them. My best take is that they are kind of "underdetermined": even after being given all the information, you can imagine more solutions than the authors would like. This forces an unpleasant trial-and-error approach, which makes the existence of the puzzle to be unfounded. Everything that isn't a puzzle and blocks progress relies on running in circles in dark (both visually and atmospherically) locations and finding a trigger for an event. It all gets frustrating really fast and turns heavily advantagous and omnipresent darkness into an active and stubborn enemy.
Lastly - the scares themselves. I must admit - I was (and still am) hungry for the kind of horror that is plentiful here - obscure, unclear, vague, unobvious, I can't allow this bias to cloud my opinion though. Partly due to the aforementioned problems with plot I can't get rid of the feeling that I'm being scared of the sake of it. The "another-location-another-absurd" syndrome catches on really fast and turns unnerving anticipation and real interest into trivial part of the plan, which is sad to me.
If the game wasn't free I wouldn't be much more critical. In our (collective, societal) circumstances 5$ which this game would probably cost wouldn't make much difference (at least in my - fortunate, I admit - reality). The most valued currency nowadays is time, which even if not otherwise amounting to something much educational, or else "useful-in-life" could be spent on playing something else, potentially worthwhile. I don't wish to imply that playing Close Your Eyes was a waste of time - I only fight the "it's free what do you want" pretence emerging once in a while in my discussions on the web.
It's a bit of a painful negative review for me, because if anything, this kind of horror clicks with me the most. It's awesome: it's scary, confusing, unpredictable and most importantly - creates an actual sense of dread. Plus, many things were done here "properly". I like how surreal it is, and how all those scenes that you see over the course of the story - how they give SOME information while raising more questions than explanations - absolutely brilliant. But too much unwanted stuff got on board and it will make some people drop this - and I understand them. Thus (to my own grief) I can't just plainly recommend it. But, not to be all that negative - if you by any chance like the sort of scary stuff I (hopefully accurately have) described here then go and play for yourself! Perhaps you will be happy to overlook the misgivings of this title. After all, I definitely can't say that I regret the time spent here.

Este juego debería ser mucho más popular y tener un fandom como el de otros juegos de terror (y que supera en calidad). Hay cosas muy experimentales, una historia muy buena para teorizar, diseños de personajes muy buenos para hacer fanart, etc.
La historia trata de un Marshmallow con túnica que escapa de la pena de muerte por asesinato y entra en un mundo onírico.
• Posee 8 finales, algunos más complicados de lograr que otros. Si añades los DLCs "Goodie Bag" (otra historia extra, más el arte y la música del juego) y "The Twisted Puzzle", tienes mucho más contenido.
• La ambientación está muy bien hecha, tanto en arte como en sonido. Las canciones que suenan en pequeños momentos o los finales también están bien.
• La mayoría de puzzles son solucionables, aunque hay algunos que son prueba y error más tediosos, y otros que necesitarás la guía para completarlos.
• Mi mayor queja es el brillo del juego. Obviamente usa la oscuridad para dar una sensación de tensión y angustia claustrofóbica (y funciona muy bien), pero también hace casi imposible de ver bien en algunos monitores (incluso calibrados).
• Otra queja es que hay muchas partes que pueden ser muy tediosas. El elemento de terror y suspenso está bien ejecutado, pero el diseño del juego no tanto. Hay muchas partes repetitivas o no muy obvias que hacen difícil el querer terminarlo.
¿Es bueno el juego? Sí, y mucho, ¿Lo recomendaría? No sé, ya que en algunas partes es tedioso y tiene sus problemas, pero es una experiencia muy interesante.

A wonderful horror experience
Follow this cute little grim, as they journey through self-identity and trying to recall who they are. As I continued playing through Close your eyes, I started to uncover more and more of who our MC really is, their past experience, specifically their interaction with a human girl (no more spoilers).
Despite the 2D, paint-like doodles and artwork, the map was quite immersive with a diverse range of themes; from a bustling crowds outside, to empty hallways, a train station, and even abstract-looking areas filled with confusion and awe ... I found myself becoming more and more anxious of what the ending would reveal. These feelings of unease are exactly what the developers were going for, when creating this game. Hence the horror and surreal category, and the forewarning on the loading screen.
The music and voice actor also added to the creepiness of the game, with the voice almost 4th wall-breaking the game play at certain moments. Controls are clear and easy to use, with no bugs nor errors. It was a smooth experience. Overall, Close Your Eyes is up there for F2P interactive horror game with a twist that you'll never expect; with 8 different endings, too! I suggest giving the game a try.

Côté histoire, j'ai RIEN compris et je ne suis pas la seule au vu des commentaires d'autres joueurs sur les discussions du jeu et c'est la raison pour laquelle je ne peux recommander le jeu. En ce qui concerne les voix en VO, l'une d'elles en particulier est incroyablement bien à mon goût grâce à des intonations impeccables ! Les énigmes elles, ne sont pas pour les esprits au repos !! ;)
Really great horror and suspense game. It's not about the monsters and jumpscares, this is about the unknown about our own (Marshmallow) story and the edging of being watched at every single step, being probably just fun and entertainment for a public we can't see.
Plus, the soundtrack is wonderful.
I was so confused within the time I played. There are no clear instructions and your often left to wander for a few minutes figuring out what to do next. I'm still playing however currently this comment is being used to help me get past my first steam level. I'll see if my opinion changes as I go further.

Esse jogo foi uma verdadeira pérola que eu encontrei por acaso e baixei de forma totalmente displicente, sem esperar muita coisa. E me surpreendi bastante. Trata-se de um jogo de terror feito no RPG Maker. Os gráfico são simples e o estilo artístico minimalista, lembrando jogos como Ib ou Omori. O criador faz muito uso da escuridão pra aumentar a sensação de enclausuramento, de estar preso. A jogabilidade é simples, mas as mecânicas vão variando conforme vc avança. Então ora vc tem que ser rápido, ora vc tem que explorar, ora vc tem que fugir, responder perguntas, memorizar caminhos, enfim não é repetitivo. Também há alguns jumpscares, mas são esporádicos, não é um game de jumpscares, isso é só algo a mais. E os puzzles são interessantes, não são muito fáceis, mas também não são extremamente difíceis, ficando em uma zona alcançável para a maioria das pessoas, mediante certo esforço.
A história é extremamente sombria e macabra, envolvendo assassinatos, abusos, vinganças e outras coisas escabrosas, e isso contrasta muito com o estilo gráfico e artístico do game e também com o personagem controlado pelo jogador, referido através de bilhetes espalhados pelo jogo como Little Marshmallow. Alguns diálogos chegam a ser doentios, e por falar em diálogos, chegamos no ponto alto, a dublagem. É aqui que o jogo brilha. Que dublagem foi essa? Meu irmão, vc não tem noção, toda vez que o locutor aparecia falando eu me arrepiava! Dublagem de altíssimo nível, não apenas técnico mas também de interpretação. As músicas também são muito boas, dá pra perceber o cuidado que eles tiveram nesta parte. E toda essa sonoplastia potencializa e ajuda a dar personalidade a história. Não causaria o mesmo impacto se fossem apenas caixas de diálogo, pode ter certeza.
O jogo possui um total de 8 finais e cada um dá uma conquista, é preciso rejogá-lo algumas vezes para platinar. As conquistas não estão bugadas, como eu li em alguns comentários, é só esperar os créditos subirem que a mesma aparece. O game tem bastante diálogo e perguntas, e infelizmente não está em pt Br. Isso pode dificultar para algumas pessoas, principalmente no que tange a resolução de alguns puzzles que estão diretamente relacionados a textos. Se vc não dominar um inglês básico fica difícil. De qualquer forma, é raro jogos de RPG Maker dublados, só isso já é um grande diferencial. É incrível esse jogo ser grátis, baixem sem medo e joguem com fone de ouvido ;)

Колись все почалося саме з неї, зараз в мене є всі ігри від цього геймдева і я шкодую лише про те, що автор сильно затримує вихід анонсованих ігор. Бо такі дивні і прекрасні штуки робить дуже мало хто, а коли частина дивини ще й перегукується з твоїми власними штуками в голові це любов. В цьому конкретному випадку настільки, наскільки можна любити відлуння твоїх власних нічних жахіть.
Close Your Eyes це як позашлюбна дитина Yume Nikki i Silent HIll'а, позашлюбна саме тому, що нагадує ці ігри, а не імітує їх. Close Your Eyes це години блукання темними, дуже темними і іноді навіть несподівано освітленими локаціями, загадки і мінімум пояснень, жах, створений атмосферою і звуками, непередбачуваністю і натяками, а не скрімерами і сценами погоні (хоча трошки цього теж є). Одна з небагатьох ігор, де я ніколи не вимикав звук і завжди грав в навушниках.
Про сюжет і геймплей не буду і не зможу, бо це треба самостійно тицяти, надто дивна штука, але якщо ви любите дивні ігри в РПГ Мейкері, дивні ігри загалом, атмосферні жахи і головоломки, то ця гра майже десять років чекає саме на вас! Дуже рекомендую і просто наполягаю, це ще й старий безкоштовний білд. Або словами Аманди Палмер:

Good horror elements, but the puzzles endings are very much trial and error unless you have a guide. Since it's free, I recommend just playing it until you get bored and then stopping. It's not worth trying to get every ending, just watch someone do it on YouTube. If this cost money, I wouldn't recommend it, but as a free game it's fine.
A general caution, this developer constantly abandons projects, so I wouldn't recommend buying any games from them unless you check the reviews closely to confirm that it's a finished game. Feast you Eyes, Red Haze, and the Close Your Eyes Anniversary Remake have all been abandoned, while the dev continues to make short games as cash grabs. Very bad behavior that I don't recommend rewarding. Still, separating the artist from their work, this free game is fine.

It was pretty meh at first but then it started getting good then I wanted to take a screenshot so pressed f12 (as you do) and it booted me to main menu and I lost my progress (not a lot but enough). Totally forgot. I don't recommend games that piss me off. The version of me who didn't press f12 in another reality would've recommended the game probably but unfortunately this one is not that one. This is the sucky reality where nothing ever works out the way I want it to. -depressed sigh-.

Only reason I wanted to close my eyes was because of how bored of it I was. When a horror game has a lot of tedious tasks, repetition, and dark rooms for no reason like this one it completely takes me out of a horror atmosphere.

Wiecie, grałem w wiele gier zrobionych na RPG makerze. Po tylu latach, dochodzę do wniosku, że te gry są naprawdę gówniane i niefajnie mi się w nie gra. Słabe sterowanie, brak możliwości chodzenia po skosie, nudne walki turowe, durne zagadki, pułapki zabijające cię na hita, postać która chodzi za wolno, niska rozdzielczość, brak podręcznego zapisu gier w miejscach gdzie by się przydały... oto są rzeczy, które mnie kompletnie zniechęcają do grania.
Ale! Według moich obserwacji, gry z RPG maker'a zazwyczaj mają naprawdę świetne historię, lore, postacie, twisty, muzykę i wiele innych rzeczy. I tu miałem wielki dylemat...
Ostatnio myślałem, że lepiej byłoby dla mnie, gdybym po prostu obejrzał gameplay z tych gier na YT. I tak gram w te gry dla fabuły, więc co mi szkoda? Jednakże, zdaje sobie sprawę z tego, że autorzy tych gier woleliby raczej, żeby ich fantastyczne dzieła były ogrywane, a nie oglądane. Więc co powinienem zrobić?
Czy powinienem przeboleć jakoś ten gameplay i przejść ją jak się powinno? A może olać to i wygodnie poznać fabułę przez wizjer kamery nagrywającej gameplay?

An incredible horror game! The only thing I've found disappointing about it so far is that I didn't receive the achievement for the first ending I've gotten. Aside from that bug, this game is everything I hoped it would be when I first heard of it- Compelling story, tense atmosphere, creepy and fascinating characters, more than enough space to explore and secrets to uncover, and only occasional jumpscares to keep you on your toes! I frequently hear people complain of a particularly long sequence in which you have to locate keys in a mansion, but I found that portion of the game to be interesting and exciting; it is long and difficult at times, but it's broken up by other segments and is only a matter of exploration. I would absolutely recommend this to any horror fan!

Despite the customized visuals, areas are mostly empty. You have to traverse vast areas with either nothing in them or smaller areas with a limited light source. However, areas with limited light sources tend to be bigger than the light source, forcing you to go back and forth several times if you don't want to miss anything. This also includes some areas that are quite dark and vast. That being said, the cutscenes are beautifully done. Characters look cute and backgrounds still look amazing with the simplified look.

The game doesn't spoonfeed you with the story. You need to figure out what happened yourself by connecting the dots, whether it's from the dialogues or from the events that you experienced. To be honest, I didn't get the story either - although finishing the game in all endings will give more information about the plot, I ended up having more questions than answers. Still, those who are attentive enough might find more clues and theories that might be related to the story.
Most dialogues are voice dubbed. I was impressed that the game has a voice dub of this quality in an [i]RPG Maker[/i] game. Voices sound clear and distinct, and the good-looking cutscene images and music help to set up the atmosphere. I enjoyed all cutscenes, including the ones without the voice dub, because of this.

The game will also have some game-over scenes, although save points are usually nearby. These game-over scenes surprised me sometimes, especially with how they appear.

Puzzles can be tricky to solve. Some might be quite obvious with the logic puzzles, although others might require more thinking to solve. I liked these kinds of puzzles. It might give you trouble at first, but you just need to think for a while to understand what the game means. However, some puzzles are just boring. They require you to brute force the solution, and it can take a while before you can get the combination, especially the one that leads to 3 endings.
Hints can be easy to miss. Some hints will be delivered through sound, and as someone who is not good at listening to English, I couldn't hear what was said. Moreover, the voice was surprisingly lower than how the voice dub sounds, making me think that the voice was just a random SFX at first. Since the game won't give more hints apart from the low voice, those who can't hear the word like me will be forced to look up either a hint or a solution.

I finished the game with ending 5 in 1.9h. The game has 8 endings, all of which can be continued within the same save file through manual save. All endings don't end within the same branch either - you need to play more after you get an ending before you can get the next one. Some endings will also have exclusive content in them, increasing your playtime. I never got bored when I tried to unlock everything.

The biggest complaint that I got for [b]Close Your Eyes [Old Version][/b] is its limited light source. This feature might be popular in horror games, but this game seems to use it to extend the playtime instead of adding the intensity. It took me a long time to explore one room since I need to explore all tiles that I could see one by one. Since the game has a lot of these areas, it took me a while before I finished exploring them, until I gave up somewhere in the middle.
That being said, the game is still enjoyable to play. I might not get the full story, but I was truly immersed in the experience. The creepiness really hits once you play the game within the right atmosphere, and there are times when I was surprised, especially regarding one ending. The game might have some issues, but it's all acceptable for a free game. If you enjoy playing horror [i]RPG Maker[/i] games and don't mind the issues, feel free to play the game - it's a game that should be played for the experience.

pretty good game. very complex original story with multiple endings; i first got number 8 (wrong way), then it allowed me to go back and i got number 5 ("its a suprise silly!"). i loved the design, and the use of shadows and sound. also, the voiceovers where a little cringe-y to me (sorry...)
not the hardest game too complete, but some of the puzzles stumped me and i had too look them up. there's also this one part i got (i don't think everyone gets this part) where this sock puppet looking ass lady (i think the girl that's his sister????) chased me through a dark room with corridors; it had me so confused..i couldn't figure out what too do and took me ages to find a playthrough that would help. that part was very scary!!
honestly though have no idea what happened so, interested to read everyones theories and watch the different endings.

Love this game very much, one of my favourite RPG Maker games, my favourite character definitely being the Host, although in the remake his design changes a bit and i don't like that one as much, design wise at least, one of my favourite quotes is also from this game, which is cool, that whole speech from The Host about closing my eyes because the darkness of the world is worse than the darkness behind our eyelids, had a lot of fun playing, pretty calm and eerie ambience.

Poor mans silent hill
played for almost an hour and a half to basically be locked in an area with no way out. Went through the entire house, the outside, and the street and literally can't get anywhere or progress at all. All the doors are "locked but no keyhole" and I've run around the entire map like ten times, trying every door over and over. Feel like I've wasted my time.
Watched a walkthrough and it seems like this person got teleported to a new location after talking to the guy on the tv, but that didn't happen to me so idk whats happening. Might be bugged

it’s a very fun game and i recommended it to those who like suspenseful horror over jumpscares. the puzzles stumped me occasionally, which led me to have to look up walkthroughs but that might just be me being slow. anywho, great game you should definitely play it :D

Mas os temas dentro da história são bastante pesados, então pense nisso antes de jogar. Claro, a maior parte está nas cartas que podemos ler, mas estão em inglês, então se não souberem inglês, tá tranquis. Mas tem algumas imagens no jogo (na forma de desenhos ) que podem incomodar, como olhos arrancados e sangue. O jogo tem puzzles bem difíceis e resolvi quase todos com ajuda do youtube. Mas ainda vale a pena ser jogado, principalmente pelas músicas e pelos finais diferentes que podemos tirar. Suas escolhas também alteram algumas falas. Enfim, achei muito bom, principalmente por este formato. Se fosse em 3d, seria um pouco clichê, mas aqui deu até um charme ser assim. Bom proveito ^^

Held up by the spooky sound design. I'm not totally sure it's worth your time, some of the puzzles are kind of annoying (walking around randomly in the dark) but some of it is actually pretty clever. Story is wacko in a good way, and the atmosphere really makes the whole thing work.

This game has a lot of good things about it, but a lot of it is also frustrating.
My biggest complaint is the poor spelling and grammar. The game relies on text throughout in an attempt to create a Lovecraftian atmosphere, but when there are constant errors in the spelling and grammar, it's extremely distracting and annoying. There are also places where the language takes on archaic elements, but the writer has no idea how to use archaic pronouns, so it just comes across as childish and dumb. Overall, the text just seems like it was written by a ten or twelve year old.
There are things in the game that are random, and if they occur, you die with no chance of fighting or escaping. This is also very annoying.
Lastly, I've been playing the Twisted Puzzle DLC, and there seems to be a glitch that prevents me from finishing it. I cannot progress any farther, and even after endlessly researching my problem online and asking for help in the discussions, I have not been able to resolve the issue. I guess it's just broken.
This game was quite a pleasant surprise. In a world where there are tons of horror indie games, this one really stands out. I was amazed that this was the first game by this creator since it had such a wonderful sound track and voice acting. The voice acting of the Announcer character out shined some triple A voice acting if seen over the years. The story is a classic open to interpretation mysterious adventure. When it comes to art I love the scribble and crayon like cutscenes / scripted scenes, but sprite art and some background art are messy (even the credits acknowledge this). This by no means should stop you from playing the game and for a free game it is really worth it. I am excited to play more games by this creator.

Probably one of my most favorite horror games of all time. While the gameplay mechanics can feel a bit clunky at times, the story and atmosphere MORE than make up for it! The twists and turns that the story takes keeps you on the edge of your seat, theorizing theory after theory as to what's going on, only to most likely crush them with a reveal just around the corner. I also absolutely ADORE the voice effects used for the Host, and it's amazing to hear with headphones! Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this game!
I am not the target audience for this game, I'm not into horror and I don't care for RPGMaker games very much, but I can still tell that care went into this "somewhat sloppier game" (to use the games own words). I can't properly review it based on my tastes, but I'm sure that, if you think it looks interesting, then you'll enjoy it.
That being said, there's a newer version that I have not played yet, so you might want to go their instead.
Yeah its pretty good, it does a good job at implementing a spooky atmosphere despite its limitations and even has some creepy in a good way music with actual lyrics lol.
The game ends up leaning too far into what its trying to push, and feels a tad bit campy/cheesy. Not a bad game at all, but not one I'd play again.
