Cassette Beasts is a solid and well made take on the classic pokemon styled game. The mechanics are well done and are placed in a unique world setting that wraps it up into a solid game. If you enjoy a creature collector game with leveling you likely will enjoy this game.

Pros:
-Lots of varied creatures to collect and level. The bootlegs was a great twist to provide variety in the type battler.
-Well done infinite but not resource collection
-Lots of opportunities for min-maxing or setting up your beasts like you like.
-The adjustable difficulty was a nice solution to enable infinite grinding.

cons:
-Without QoL mods it was quite annoying to navigate the map. It should have been baseline to be able to fast travel to campfires.
-There was no way to keep a specific form of a beast without losing the power from it being upgraded.
-Some beasts lacked any evolution’s which was a letdown given how interesting some of them were.
-The sticker stacking system came a bit late to be useful in my playthrough.

Nostalgia for PKMN fans! My favorite games growing up were BW and BW2 with the story and animations being so good. I recently bought Cassette Beasts on the app store for my phone, something I am looking forward to on long car rides.

Don't let the incorrect low play time reported here fool you, I've sunk a lot of time into this title.

Amazing game with a big caveat:
DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE AN AMD GPU.

There are significant issues with shadow and texture display through the entire game and the developer's only recommendation is to change your display drivers to backdated versions. I also own a Steam Deck, which this seems like an ideal platform for this title, but I would have requested a refund otherwise because it is quite literally unplayable (invisible characters, flashing maps). That being said, I really like the entire vibe of the game and I think projects like this should be supported even on a purely philosophical basis.

On a more positive note, this title not only needs a sequel, but I'm hoping that, if one does come out, that save data will be able to be ported. Like most creature capture games, this title suffers from a disappointing post-game, and being able to take bootleg variants into a new title would be a great way to preserve a wonderful collection of digital(analog?) beasts.

As an additional note, sound design and OST on this title is amazing, particularly "Like Chimeras". You'll know exactly what I mean once you trigger a fusion and experience the dynamic track shift.

So, I'm a bit conflicted about this game. I do recommend a lot of it, but I found certain core aspects of it very frustrating. I'll start with what I liked followed by what I disliked, and you can decide from there if this is helpful.

I liked the overall concept of Cassette Beasts. A little retro, a little Pokemon, a little early Nintendo style and Playstation graphics. The world was interesting, the plot kept me motivated, and I felt that it was pretty open-ended. I also loved how the music changed when you use a core mechanic in the game called Fusion. Shelby Harvey is an amazing vocalist, and the soundtrack was one of my favorite components of the game. I enjoyed the core story all the way through to the end.

I disliked... well, just about everything else in the game. The type interactions are so damn confusing. This could be because I'm only well versed up to about Gen 3 of Pokemon, so perhaps this kind of type variety is normal for younger gamers, but I felt like I needed a PhD to understand how all the different types interacted. As best I could figure out, Astral basically beats everything but Plastic, Air has strong attacks but is weak against almost everything, and you should use Glass, Glitter, Fire, and Plant types if you want to lose to literally anything in the game.

While I enjoyed the open world aspect, I was often frustrated by the gatekeeping abilities that prevent you from going too far in certain areas. Sort of like the HM mechanics of Pokemon, I guess, but delivered in the most awkward way possible. It might help more if you had some kind of level warning for each zone, because you can easily wander from a level 5-10 area into a level 25-30 area with literally no warning and no requisite ability. So this wasn't done that well.

I also disliked the arbitrary nature of several encounters in the game. Typically, in a Pokemon game, you hear about a gym leader's abilities at least a few times leading up to them because they are challenges you are meant to prepare for. In this game, you usually don't know what you're encountering in a ranger captain or Archangel fight until you're literally in the fight getting owned by their gimmick. Unless you're lucky or overleveled, this means you usually have to eat a loss and lose some resources or Alt-F4 before the fight is over so you can reload your last save.

Finally, we come to my biggest gripe about the game: The post game and DLC content. This may be an ironic complaint, considering placement, but I found the challenges in the post game way, way, way, way, way too hard. There's no warning behind it, you're just trying to help an NPC with a seemingly easy quest where suddenly bosses are taking away 1/2 your HP with each attack. And there's a gauntlet mode that apparently consists of 150 possible encounters, with a boss at the end that is built around giving you the middle finger. I didn't even attempt that one.

The DLC is also a huge waste of time. There's maybe an hour of content, a handful of new beasts, and four boss fights that are all designed to annoy you instead of present a decent challenge. And to get to those fights, you have to negotiate some of the worst dungeon-building physics I have ever seen in a game, to the point where I would fall into a pit and warp into the middle of rotating objects in the same room, then fall repeatedly until I got lucky and could glide to safety.

Lastly, the dev team can't be bothered to support their own game anymore. Other than an occasional "promotional" beast you can unlock with the mailbox in town with a temporary code, there's literally nothing else being done with this game, either in new content, balances, or bug fixes. The promotional beasts all suck, anyway, so I don't know why they bother making them temporarily available.

I know I spent a lot more time talking about the negatives than the positives, but I just wanted to make it clear what I disliked about the game so others can consider if that's a dealbreaker. If those things don't sound so bad, feel free to pick this up, as there was a lot to enjoy in this game. But if any of those things annoy you as deeply as they did me, consider a different imitation Pokemon game to scratch your itch.

I'm opening up this review for comments, so feel free to say if you agree/disagree with my review. I may not reply, and I definitely won't if it's just something like, "You suck at games", but who knows? Maybe I can be swayed by a player of this game with more skill than me.

Eu esperei bastante para escrever esta resenha, porque não sabia bem o que escrever sobre este jogo. Cassette Beasts começou como uma experiência estranha para mim: O jogo te joga em um mundo desconhecido em que você não conhece as regras ou as pessoas. O jogo também te dá alguns objetivos, mas que só podem ser concluídos na reta final. Então, completamente confusa e perdida, eu comecei a explorar aquelas terras e aprender tudo na marra. E, gente, é assim que você se apaixona pelo jogo.

Quando você começa a entender o mundo, a jogabilidade, os companheiros que te seguem, aí que seu mundo se abre. O jogo te enche de objetivos, segredinhos, personagens carismáticos, músicas INCRÍVEIS. Você só quer explorar mais e mais, gravar seus monstrinhos, ficar parado no café ouvindo as músicas. Nada ali te apressa. Você pode só ficar ali passando de nível e procurando monstrinhos de tipos diferentes! Tudo bem, jogue no seu ritmo.

Também quero parabenizar a tradução em português perfeita do jogo e a representatividade. Vou sempre enaltecer isso. Obrigada, jogo.

Enfim, vale MUITO a pena. É divertido. É maravilhoso. É um dos melhores desse gênero. Joguem!

An excellent title. One worthy of it's praise.

While me and my friend was a little disappointed that we weren't able to do the local co-op that is available in the online mode, we still had a blast nonetheless.

The gameplay is well-balanced besides a few combinations and the powerful fuse ability that can happen. Every battle was enjoyable and enemies have adjustable difficulty if you are finding that they are way too easy. Battles also don't fall into pokemon's trap of having too much randomness. Capturing a monster still has some gameplay to it and still has to be planned. They need to add a 2x speed though, I don't want to WAIT SO LONG!

The main story takes a backseat to side plots in my opinion. The main story is super interesting to start, so it's a really good hook, but the ending is not that exciting and, in some ways, predictable. The side plots are where it's at though. Every ally has an interesting quest that is different from others. One of them was lackluster, but the rest I had a blast enjoying. Spoilers: [spoiler] Seeing my allies leave really breaks my heart, but they have their realities to return too. And I have mine to return to. [/spoiler]

The music is amazing. Kudos to the people behind the soundtrack. Sounds also are great.

This is a great twist on turn-based games. This is an amazingly polished experience. There isn't much that needs to be done to improve on a game like this. I heavily enjoy it. I desire to make something like this one day.

[b]Cassette Beasts[/b] is honestly one of my favorite games of all time now.

One of my really close friends gifted me this game, and I was so damn happy to finally play it. After putting time into it, I can easily say it was 100% worth it. The story is amazing, the adventure is fun, and the RPG mechanics kept me hooked the whole way through.

This game just felt [i]fresh[/i]. Exploring the world, finding weird enemies, solving puzzles, figuring out how to reach certain places, and constantly wondering what was waiting around the next corner made the whole experience hard to put down. It always gave me that feeling of wanting to keep going just a little more... and then a little more after that. That is exactly how games should feel.

The monster designs were awesome too. My personal favorite was that Power Ranger moth-looking guy — I named him [b]Kamen Rider Mothman[/b]. I beat the game with him and even kicked my friend’s ass with him too, until one day he looked up some crazy build and found something that basically one-shotted my whole team. I was like, what the ♥♥♥♥ happened? Later on though, I ran into a passive ability sticker that completely shut that down by sending the one-hit kill right back at him. That kind of stuff made the sticker system really fun to mess with.

The music is also incredible. I love it so much I still play it in my car now. Boogie down baby. The pixel art may be simple, but it is still really nice to look at, and the whole game has a charm to it that sticks with you.

My only real downside is that once you finish the game, there is not a whole lot left unless you really want to keep pushing builds, making crazy sticker combos, and going for the most broken effects possible. I honestly wish there was more story content or another update because I would absolutely keep playing for more adventure.

Still, this game gave me such a fun ride from start to finish, and I loved the world, the gameplay, the music, and the feeling of discovery the whole time.

This game is freaking amazing.

Cassette Beasts is definitely the best monster collector I've ever played. I found the story very interesting, the gameplay extremely fun, and full of interesting mechanics.
Unlike more mainstream monster collectors, when you have an advantage of one type over another doesn't just translate into increased damage, but also into reactions that can apply buffs or debuffs, change a monster's type, or otherwise interact differently. This was definitely one of the things I appreciated most.
The music is very nice and I must admit that it got into my head.
I liked the monster designs overall; there are many really cool monsters. Some didn't convince me, and some evolutions are perhaps a little too different from the starting monster. Overall, though, aside from a few minor ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I'd recommend the game in this regard as well.
Maybe the map could have been a little bigger and I would have added a few more bases or cities, but all in all, exploring the game world is always fun.
The character sprites could be improved, some of them probably look a little too amateurish, which is a shame because, as I said before, the monster designs are almost always spot on.

Overall I loved Cassette Beasts and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves monster collectors.

Entretenido juego de captura de monstruos.

Prácticamente es un Isekai, eres teletransportado a otro mundo donde la gente puede “grabar” las formas de los monstruos y convertirse en ellos. Tu objetivo es explorar el mundo y ver si puedes encontrar una manera de volver a casa.

De las mejores cosas que me ha gustado del juego es la música. Hubo bastantes momentos en las que me vi tarareando las melodias y intentando de hacer kareoke con mi pesimo ingles. :v

A diferencia de otros juegos del genero, a medida que suben de nivel los monstruos ellos van produciendo stickers. Estos stickers son los movimientos de los monstruos, los cuales puedes quitar y poner a cualquier otro monstruo que se compatible. Esto da muchas opciones de personalización si deseas armar un monstruo de una menra especifica.

Tiene variedad en las quest, algunas con objetivos raros, otras con historias personales de personajes secundarios que encuentras en tu aventura y el misterio prinicipal del muyndo.

Ahora por el lado “neutro” esta el apartado artistico. No me agrado mucho los diseños en general de los monstruos.

Por el lado malo, no hay opciones para acelarar los combates. Para mi, al principio esta ok ir a un ritmo lento, ver las animaciones y disfrutar el combate, pero cuando vas en captura de monstruos o grindear se vuelve un poco tedioso no tener la opción.

Hay una mecánica que se trata de fusionar dos monstruos para crear uno más poderoso, pero no se siente que esta bien diseñado, las abominaciones que se pueden crear a veces no tienen sentido.

No me parece de los mejores juegos del genero, pero si uno bastante diferente. Después del terminar el juego puedes seguir tratando de completar la colección, haciendo misiones extras, personalizando más tu estilo de juego. También desbloqueas reglas adicionales para futuras run, como muerte permanente para tus monstruos o para ti. El juego me tomo alrrededor de 30 horas en terminarlo con un 70% de los logros.

Dispone de modo cooperativo pero no tuve la oportunidad de probarlo, también tiene opciones para Workshop.

I love the creativity that went into this! Visuals are great, music is amazing, the monster element or coating system is welcome change for these monster collectors/battlers and I also liked a lot of the monster designs.
The story was alright. Nothing breathtaking but enough to pull you through the game.
Overall a solid experience and I'm definitely going to keep listening to the soundtrack.

Super cute Pokemon-like with plenty of its own ideas and twists. Its combat is unique and fun though can be brute forced like Pokemon. Plenty of depth if you want it though. The creatures are all really well designed and there was no obvious aping of existing Pokemon designs. The open world format works well, and the Metroidvania and platforming elements added in felt fresh. Big recommendation if you like monster collecting RPGs

Honestly, this might have completely ruined any chance I had of playing another official mainline Pokemon game unless they really take some risks and deliver something genuinely unique that stands out from the formulaic crowd. Thankfully fanmade RomHacks exist like Unbound and Ultra Violet in the meantime.

There's so much I could say about this game, but above all the presentation goes above and beyond. The Archangels were so much fun and visually distinct. It added a creepy spice to an otherwise already wonderful soup of elements from various games like Persona, Pokemon and Zelda. The passion really shines through in every part of this wonderful adventure and even offers a lot of replay value! Whether you want to do challenge runs or keep collecting in the postgame, this game has legs beyond just a single playthrough. The vibes are impeccable, with a soundtrack that will stick with me for years to come.

Having just finished my first playthrough, the only real complaint I have is that tape management can be a hassle. You can't just swap tapes (monsters) from your storage into your active party if your party is full. This leads to a lot of unnecessary menuing that could've otherwise been avoided. But honestly, since that's my only real painpoint, I can't even be mad.

The story and setting are so interesting that I lament that there wasn't more lore to dig into, and the relationships with partymembers feel a bit shallow. I hope a sequel or future game by these devs spends a little extra time fleshing out characters, as the designs were amazing and the little we do see of them is wonderful.

I'm glad I gave this game a chance. It didn't blow my mind, but it filled my heart. And there is something to be said for a game that leaves you wanting more after the credits roll.

It took me much too long to finally decide to give this game a go, "Another creature collector?" the main selling points being the 80s aethetic and the creature fusions just weren't enough to pull me in and I'm still not convinced that the multiplayer experience is worth trying to rope a friend into it.

But once I started playing though, the music almost immediately pulled me in with its chillax vibes,

The battle loop is reasonably standard, nothing much you can do there, and the fusions are barely a thing since I'm still at the begining but the "Pokedex" has 130 creatures to discover and 130x130 = a mind boggling 16900 different fusions. "Shinies" exist but instead of a simple pallette swap it's a type swap as one of the other 14 types; speaking of types the type chart applies specific buff/debuffs instead of a simple "more or less" damage.

And the map, calling this game "Open-world" does it a disservice since open-world + RPG generally means having a world that's just jam-packed with too many things to do that you either have to ignore everything to focus on the main quest only or risk getting max levelled and burn-out from the game having only completed 10% of what's on offer... No, instead this game offers something more like a lovingly crafter metroidvania map; you'll be exploring far and wide way before you unlock that ability that makes you go "Ahah!" and return to all those spots you saw a specific terrain feature or other.

Last but not least, coming back to the creatures, the game is really balanced to try and get you to play all of them and I mean, why are you playing a creature collector if you don't want to try them all? Anyways, the point is that since you transform into the creatures your character/player level is the main source of stats, the creature only have 5 levels, 0 to 5 stars, mostly affecting available moves and at 5 stars they're ready to evolve (If there is an evolution which most do)
So you're never levelling a creature for 40+ Levels and all creatures in your party of 6 get the same amount of exp from battles and quest.

Overall it's just a very chillax game with a good balance of stuff to do + some challenging moments to put your A-Team to the test.

Un monster collector di tutto rispetto. Storia interessante e meccaniche molto particolari. I vantaggi di tipo non sono solo i classici danno maggiore o danno minore ma aggiungono vere e proprie strategie alla battaglia. L'unica pecca che posso trovare a questo gioco è che alcuni design (e quasi tutte le fusioni) sono un po' bruttini ma per il resto ne vale assolutamente la pena.

I think there's something fundamentally wrong with the combat.

I swear there's some mechanic that won't let you hit enemies if it doesn't want you to apply status effects, or that maybe the evasion is off.

I don't know what's up, but I'm sick of using my tapes, and I will miss the same attack like ten times in a row. And then, using the same attack on another tape also misses, but other attacks will still hit just fine. Certain attacks refuse to hit, even in regular enemies sometimes.

But in the next battle against the same enemies. Attacks work just fine.

It feels like xcom again where no matter your stats, type, or whatever... the system just didn't care because of some lame-o behind the scenes rng scaffold.

And, I think the combat system has some weird quirks where I don't think type advantage works correctly all the time. Especially in bosses, rogue fusions, etc, type advantage sometimes doesn't seem to apply (not the status immunity thing that just outright prevents debuffs). It shows the notification pre attack that they'll freeze or whatever, but sometimes it just doesn't happen.

Also, like, I don't like how my tapes are lvl 67 or something, but even when adjusting stats at the gym, my damage remains the same no matter what. Whether it's a lvl 7 enemy or a lvl 55, it's always that same 100 damage.

Who knows, but after playing, I just think there have to be behind the scene mechanics that the devs applied unequally across the game and enemies irrespective of stats, types, etc, and my overall experience was pretty poor.

There's other stuff too, like, that DLC sucked. I don't mind hard jumping puzzles like in GW2, but this just seemed like an exercise in fighting against the game engine limitations and not the controls when trying to get through them.

What a lovely game. This was full of charm, had an engaging battle system, and the music is absolutely stellar, had to go buy the OST. Was a real treat to play, and felt like just the right amount of content. Loved it.

I really wish there was star rating on here, because I think a simple yes or no doesn't quite give the idea how I feel about this game, but that is one of the good reasons why this is a thumbs down. I think the overwhelmingly positive is a bit of a mislead on this one for many reasons, and it lead me to realize if I didn't pay $7 for this game I would've probably been kind of pissed because refunds are out of the question by the time you realize whether you like this game or not, and no one is saying anything bad about this at all which doesn't make any sense to me. Biggest thing to me about cassette beasts is coromon just straight up did a better job in almost every single regard in my opinion. I was absolutely shocked with how much I found myself wanting to play that game again the entire time going through cassette beasts. Really my only detractor to coromon in comparison to this was the big boss battles kinda sucked (the archangels definitely were way better in that regard, genuinely some really unique fights with some fall off towards endgame). Holy moly is this bad boy antiquated in terms of QOL features. I feel like they understand what makes a good pokemon game, but have a very fringe understanding of what makes them frustrating. Coromon did this perfectly, QOL in that game is incredible, in this game I find myself constantly asking for more. Why do I have to constantly teleport back to heal without cost in early game, why does it cost me anything to heal at a campfire when it becomes negligible in cost very quickly, why do I have to put a party member into the storage box, and then pull out who I want on my team instead of having all of that doable from one screen, why cant I just have a swap or reorganize button for stickers instead of unequipping multiple and then hopefully remembering which ones I used to get them in the right order, why do I have to go through 8 lines of dialogue to just heal my dang team (borderline every single time too, highly recommend using the dog as a partner to avoid this), and a good amount more that feels like its been solved by every other pokemon clone. This game feels like there's 14 button presses where there should be 2 with way too many things that I could notice immediately. I just constantly found myself going "are they really going to make me go through this every time I need to *do this routine task*". The best way I could describe QOL is gen3 pokemon but with some slightly better things and some things that are honestly genuinely worse.

The biggest thing I have against this game is the completely dogwater story, never have I skipped through dialogue so early into a game. Now to be fair, first and foremost I care about gameplay not story; but jesus christ every character has some of the most cliche, unoriginal one liners that are incredibly annoying. There have also been games that draw me in for the combat and then blow my mind with an incredible story, did I expect that here, absolutely not but it was also so much worse than I was expecting. One thing I did personally find annoying is the very "happy go lucky" feel it has in a setting that feels very juxtaposed by this in a way that doesn't work and I think the dialogue really shows that well. My partner will say something stupid, and my two choices of response are something along the lines of "that's great" and "I love that". Give me one that insults them, give me one that is more neutral, give me more engaging dialogue options that aren't just two ways of saying the same thing. I honestly don't think those dialogue options changing any outcomes would be a good idea, even in terms of the relationship system; but I just find myself slamming the A button as fast as I can through most of it because I just could not care less about what I say in response when the choices are all the same thing anyway. One note in terms of characters/story that I did really like is how they made the captain gay without making it her personality, hats off to the devs for making a character that is gay and not a gay character. Apparently that's a hard thing to do now.

Now the combat in this game is genuinely awesome. I really like the amount of build variety not just in terms of different mons, but also for the sheer fact that I can run a team of the same exact mons and have every single one be a completely different build. It makes the combat and team choice incredibly fun and engaging but also brings out something unique compared to most games of this kind. Endgame feels pretty good too, especially with all the movement options, you can just go in a straight line to most places. Combat in endgame starts getting a little stale because it becomes pretty easy to steamroll almost everything you encounter, but I do like how it makes me really start engaging with the side quests to find really strong opponents when I generally tend to start forgetting about those at the endgame point of most of what I play. When I found that steamrolling problem the most apparent was late game archangels. At the beginning you are getting by through the skin of your teeth, late game feels like a slightly harder fight than usual that has no impact other than the fact that you progressed the main story. Where combat feels the weakest is the player character health system, I've knocked out probably 14 or so trainers before they could get another one out (which I wish they made more apparent because it feels badass), but that has happened to me what feels like a lot more. It feels worthless to have a team of six when you can get maybe four out before your trainer gets their head kicked in. Again to be fair, 99% of the time it doesn't matter because you can just finish the fight off with the other character, but the cases where it does feels extremely frustrating when you get hit 3 times in a row by a 10% accuracy move that one shots you and all the leftover damage goes into both trainers so they get knocked out before you can actually do something about the situation. That just makes it feel like resetting is genuinely more fair than what you just put up with when straight luck is what put you out of the fight in just a few turns. You could absolutely chalk this up to a "git gud" situation, but at the same time that's not what I play a turn based rpg for, I want multiple strategies to problem, not just one solution that if you don't have in your kit you are just SOL. This is honestly pretty rare but pretty frustrating when it does happen, and it does happen enough for me to put it in here.

Now why would I keep playing and write this ridiculous review, because all in all I love this game so much, and I keep finding myself coming back to it knowing all of this; but I just don't think I could really recommend this to someone else unless they've played everything else. If you want a good monster collection game, two that really stood out as something special to me were coromon and monster sanctuary (really left an impression on me with the super unique, "all out" combat).

I know a lot of people would jokingly say "it's like Pokemon if it was good," but that's kind of what's going on here. Lots of fun little creatures to collect, secrets, puzzles, a fun atmosphere, appropriately great soundtrack, creative setting, interesting characters... what more could you want? It felt a bit short, but based on my play time, I suppose it really only FELT short, and luckily there's a lot of options to tweak further playthroughs, including totally randomizing everything (if that's your thing). Honestly, I couldn't recommend it enough, it's a great time!

As someone whose experience with monster-collectors is mostly limited to a few Pokémon titles, I found Cassette Beasts to be an absolute delight. It’s a fresh, clever, and engaging take on the formula that managed to hook me for hours.

In my opinion what stands out is:

- Stunning Aesthetics & Customization: The 2D art style is gorgeous and full of character. What really shines, though, is the depth of the gameplay—the ability to create unique, diverse builds for every single creature makes experimentation feel rewarding.

- A Story Worth Theorizing About: Unlike many games in this genre, the plot here is genuinely interesting. It’s atmospheric and mysterious enough to keep you guessing and coming up with theories about what’s actually going on in the world.

- Mechanical Innovation: In this game, you don’t "catch" creatures; you analyze and replicate them. This does mean you might feel slightly less "bonded" to the monsters themselves (as your primary emotional connection is with your human companions); but it grants you total freedom to experiment with attack combinations and builds without the "guilt" of forcing a wild animal to fight for you. It feels more like tactical mastery than pet ownership.

I’ve spent countless hours happily lost in this game. One moment I was intensely strategizing my team to overcome the toughest challenges, and the next I was just relaxing, hunting for "bootleg" (alternative) versions of creatures to complete my bestiary.

Whether you’re a veteran of the genre or a newcomer looking for something more mature and mechanically deep, this game is a must-play. It's charming, smart, and incredibly polished.

I was noticing how insane it is that this game only has 6,000 reviews, then I realized I myself had not reviewed.

This game is absurdly good. Without naming names, if you find yourself dissatisfied with the state of other monster catching franchises, this game is far and away the best answer to that fatigue. The style is impeccable the gameplay mechanics familiar but entirely fresh, capturing the charm of pixel animation with incredible updates to make the graphics pop in modern times. The characters are all so fun and memorable and the game encourages you to spend time with each one leading to not only benefits in battle, but a genuine attachment to the characters and their arcs. The music is also still so incredible, the main battle theme is still an all time top 5 for me. Add to this an absolutely seamless multiplayer experience and you get a game that will outshine anything else in this category for a long time to come.

The game requires a mod to speed up battles. The mechanics themselves are good though, and exploring was ok, so I'll probably try it again when I could be bothered to download the mod

The vocal-heavy soundtrack did not grow on me. Before buying, give "Wherever We Are Now" on the soundtrack a listen and ask yourself if you want to hear that song another 100 times because it plays in the hub what felt like every single time

Very good twist on the monster-catching genre, with a lot of good ideas:
- 2-on-2 as default format, interesting buffs/debuffs and plenty of support moves give more interesting tactical choices
- Fusion mechanic and debuffs for type advantages bring an additional depth to fights
- Nice music (with kudos to voice track addition during fusion activation in combat)
- Non-linear world progression

This game has so much promise, but feels so unfinished, and needs some MASSIVE QOL updates.

I really do enjoy the combat and the sticker system, and the combat system is so great, and mindful of things like breaking glass creating glass shards which damage melee attackers. But the world is much too difficult to navigate, and the quests feel like an unpaid job. Between impossible to see camera angles and weirdly textured terrain, I spend way more time wandering around lost than I do actually playing the game.

I've enjoyed playing it, and it has a lot of promise from a studio that I like, but I need the terrain to be more traversible. I shouldn't need a walkthrough just to travel.

Buy this one on sale.

I haven't even finished this game yet but it's SO GOOD! The graphics are great, the overworld almost reminds me of the Generation 5 Pokemon games if they were made for modern hardware, and the overworld sprites reminds me of my favorite romhack, Quetzal. The beasts are well designed, the gameplay loop is fun, and I love doing raids to try and find bootlegs. The story so far has also been really good, and the archangels are super cool! The difference in artstyle for them really helps them stand out and feel like they're not supposed to be in this world. Really great game.

I love it. Great charm, art, music, and gameplay.

It's not really co-op online like you might want; I bought it for my brother and I thinking we could play through it together and *technically* you can, but it's more of a "play it alongside one another in online co-op." You can do the raids together which is fun, but since every battle is a double battle, I was hoping to play through the whole game with him as my duo.

Which is true, you CAN do that- but only local co-op only. The second player controls your "partner" in the story. I wish you could do that online as well instead of local only. But, Steam Share Play does allow that which is nice. But I do wish it was more clear on the store page before I bought 2 copies.

An exceptionally good game!

It's modeling itself heavily off Pokemon but it's honestly better than anything Nintendo's made in the past 20 years.

Battles are 2 on your side (your custom MC and a buddy party member) vs 1-3 enemies. You can fight groups of wandering beasts in the wild, but there's also enemy "trainers" who in true Pokemon fashion attack when you enter their field of view. You got gym leaders to conquer and story superbosses and so on.

You capture beasts by recording them onto cassette tapes (see game title) which requires one of your party members to channel a capture tape onto an enemy. While they do so, the enemy is prevented from dying so they can't be killed and lose the capture or escape, which is very nice. The lower their HP the higher the chance of capture, and the other party member can hit them and apply debuffs to raise the chance even more. If the capture fails you can just try again as long as you have the capture items. It's a superior system.

The battle system is rock solid. Each character gets 2 AP per round and attacks cost varying amounts. There's a web of various type advantage/weaknesses and how they are implemented is quite interesting. Hitting an enemy with an attack of a super effective type not only does more damage but it applies specific debuffs based on the type interaction, like fire attacks on plant type also apply burn, or water on earth inflicts def down. Attacks of disadvantage types do less damage and apply positive debuffs to the target. So this adds a whole other dimension to picking the right attacks. There's a whole bunch of chain interactions that can happen as a result of this that can produce some unexpected benefits, like proccing an enemy's thorns in order to get positive buffs on your character from the type backlash.

You can merge your two beasts together into a super form that combines your movesets, HP, AP gain, and types, which usually is a good thing but not always. It also combines the buffs/debuffs of your team which might result in you doing tons more damage but also can result in you being crippled with debuffs unable to hit anything. I like that the choice is very strategic. There's tons of strategy in the combat system overall and some really broken stuff you can do with clever ability set ups.

Each of your party members can use any of the beasts in your roster (they do this by transforming into the beast) but if they run out of HP, the beast "faints" and overflow damage gets dealt to the person's human form. You can do this to enemy beast users as well, which sometimes allows you to blast an enemy trainer, skipping the rest of their beast roster and winning the battle early. You have healing items that you can use to heal your tapes but you can only restore HP on your human forms by resting at a base.

After the intro tutorial and story quest they really just turn you loose on the world and let you explore how you want. There's a big map to wander with tons of enemies scattered across it but plenty of chests, puzzles, caves, and secrets. After capturing specific enemy types your character learns permanent abilities that enhance their ability to move around the map out of combat, from hovering, wall climbing, and other stuff. It's very enjoyable exploring and clearing the map of all the treasures and activating permanent shortcuts and fast travel points. You can receiver "rumors" from people at town that point you to a lot of the points of interest on the map which helps a lot. I like how there really isn't a set order of dungeons that the game is guiding you through - you really can just sequence break yourself across the map and unlock things immediately if you want to.

The battle music is really good too. They do weaving of the normal music and superior lyrical versions well.

Just an great addition to the genre. It's shocking how games like this and Palworld are pushing the design forward of monster capture games while certain other companies stagnate and bilk their playerbase.

So I don't normally go out of my way for 'creature collector' games, but Epic gave this one away some time back and after it sat in my account there for a while I finally got around to trying it. When I did, It pulled me in like few games have in recent years.

I don't normally pay all that much attention to game soundtracks, barring a few exceptions, but the music has my appreciation as well. There aren't a ton of songs, but they fit well.

I always enjoy games with customization options, and this one does a good job of offering you choices in how to setup your tapes while at the same time making sure that almost any experimentation you do isn't going to make you regret it. Try your only instance of an attack out and you don't like it? Just peel it back off and into your inventory. Decide to replace one of your long held tapes late game? There's virtually no grind to get a new one up to snuff, since most of your leveling happens on your character, not on your tapes.

Story was good, characters were memorable, and I liked the game enough to pick it up here on steam. (which, I ought to note, required absolutely no fiddling with files or migrating my save; I just started it up and was able to continue the file I started on Epic on the same machine)

Emphatically recommended.
