Quirky writing and fun to explore. Visuals are interesting, to say the very least - especially towards the end. The game is fairly buggy, the gameplay is just okay, and the pacing is really weird, but overall I enjoyed my time in Broken Reality.

Beautiful world, very lovely. Negative reviewers seem to not know what a walking simulator is. I haven't reached the end yet, though. But I think it deserves a thumbs up for the areas I have seen so far.

Can't really explain this game that well, what I can say is that it's something you'll remember. Honestly, when we talk about the game now the humors outdated but it adds to the charm- it's definitely a product of its time and a labor of love. It'll make you remember something you weren't even apart of but wished you could've participated in. Give it a chance or pass on it, IDK- I just loved experiencing it once and now keep trying to experience it again.
Mostly exploration with some adventure thrown in for good measure. A beginner area, then a hub that links to three other worlds, and a final area. Will take 4-6 hours to do everything. Not overly complex with really good late 90's/early 00's theming a la a vaporwave aesthetic. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but there is a story and some lore to follow. Overall, worth getting on a good sale if you enjoy an easy going adventure game with a retro 90's tech theme.

If you're reading reviews before buying then I do highly recommend the game, however there are things the game has that are making me give it a negative review. Although I'm giving this game a negative review my thoughts on it are a bit more mixed than anything else. I like the game there are parts which I really don't like.
In Geocity particularly the game felt like a grind, having to run around and collect money, but also having to run around and collect likes that are forced into tiny corners of the maps in order to get to 3900 fame for what I assume to be the last area, "Internet".
The movement speed is slow which I don't mind, but when making large maps like these not having ANY way of fast travelling between locations is ridiculous with the speed the player runs. At the very least I would have expected a basic sprint button.
I ran into several softlocks such as when I had the camera out and the game panned towards an NPC talking which forced the Camera to stay glued onto my face until I reset the game, losing progress, and another was when an invisible wall blocked me off from exiting the world, so I had to again, close the game and reopen it so it despawned correctly. On the topic of closing the game, whenever I try to exit the game through the menus it never works and softlocks the game there, so I have to tab out and close the game via Steam.
Something that I don't mind but got on my nerves after a while is why the hell can't I use the scroll wheel to go through my tools? I can press the numbered buttons and Q&E but why not use my scroll wheel for what should be a thing implemented?
The game doesn't have a jump button but I figured out on my own that using the stop watch to teleport puts you mid-air for a moment so I've been using that as a pseudo jump which I hope doesn't get removed if its unintentional, but if it was then why have that as a feature? I had to use it for a puzzle in order to collect what I believe to be the final triangle was and that felt like I was cheesing the game but at the same time I couldn't find any other possible way of collecting it. If that is intentional then why not just make a Damn jump button you unlock, hell a sprint button could also be unlocked like that too.
Also this is more of a nitpick than anything else, I saw people asking for achievements a long while back and the development said they were gonna add it in the future. Its been eight years and still no achievements, but again that's mostly a nitpick.
Overall, it's a good game. I can tolerate games with jank, in fact I often like messing around in them, however I think the game needs same patches and even a content update just to make the game better.

Another problem I had were all the photos you need to take. Yes the game looks great and has nice visuals, but it feels annoying having to backtrack whilst holding the camera for what is basically glorified hidden collectibles that you both need to be constantly holding an item to be made visible, and to get close enough in order to snap a photo. This is not to mention there are camera icons that for some reason vanish when looking at them in certain angles they don't like.
I've played through the ending and after going through the final area another major issue I found were the portals in the section. As cool as they are they hardly work for me, most of the time I just phase through the portals and in multiple occasions when talking to ERROR I actually ended up falling out of the world with the game not teleporting me. Luckily for some of the times I did fall off I had a teleport I could use to get somewhere safe, but in the other cases I didn't and I had to close the whole game.
I like the game truly, I can tell the devs put a lot of effort into this game, but as much effort as it has it needs a bit more polish. I don't point flaws out because I don't like the game, I point them out because I want to see improvements to this diamond in the rough.

Overall Summary: It's alright, story and gameplay are meh. The universe is an interesting concept though. However, the Processor requirement is ridiculous, and the hard millenial nostalgia gets fatigued.
Now, I will give the studio credit on the easter eggs. They were quite original ideas for easter eggs.
The look of the maps, the characters, the gameplay, I LOVED IT ALL! It was so fun exploring areas, solving puzzles, and seeing what different characters had to say. AND I LOVED THE CHARACTER DESIGNS they're all so unique! All the different areas had so much personality and cool music to top it off. The skyscrapers were my absolute favorite because of how chill the vibes were <3 I will say, however, that there were a couple bugs here and there that would either soft lock you, or your character would get stuck, causing you to restart the game LOL For me it was fine because I genuinely enjoy playing this game <3 but yea that's a heads up for any new players <3 Looking forward to the next game you guys make!
Un juegardo muy disfrutable, lo único negativo es que la última sección de todas me daba mucho lag y los portales no me teletransportaban como 3 de cada 4 veces, por lo que se me ha hecho injugable. Pero no voy a dejar que ese último punto evite que le recomiende esta joyita a otra gente (creo que soy el único al que le ha sucedido ese problema) porque más allá tiene buenos puzles, personajes muy xd, buenas mecánicas, humor icónico y en su mayoría un buen soundtrack, aunque en algunas secciones la gama de colores te puede dar dolor de vista. 9/10

The most 2013 game of all time, not in a bad way. There is a feeling that you're loosely playing through the history of the internet in this vaporwave world. Things start out so fun and expressive and without consequence, until the platforms grow bigger, more sanitized, more corporate, and of course more and more people show up. I won't give away the surprise ending though, but definitely was unexpected.
Amazing game to get lost in. Developers gave alot of effort and creativity and you can see it by playing the game.

Initially I had a lot of fun with Broken Reality. The aesthetic is absolutely fantastic, exploring the cyber world was fun, and I was constantly running into things that were amusing. As I progressed to each new area, it just started to feel a lot more clunky and video-gamey. Awkward 3D navigation and puzzles, falling and having to redo sections, having to collect enough thingies to continue, environments that were not nearly so visually pleasing as the opening. Basically I just ran out of steam with it and I can't bring myself to finish.

Broken Reality is a game on it's own. It has its story, gameplay, music, and all that stuff that makes a game what it is, giving it its own unique personality. While the whole ghost in the machine, glitches, vaporwave themes have been done a hundred times over, Broken Reality does use it all in a way that tells its own story. Even though it's a story we have heard before, it's still good to hear, see, and play for people who like these types of stories.
It is quite rough around the edges. The lack of accessibility options, such as audio levels and customization of controls makes this challenging to play if you need a game tweaked to your liking. I was able to play through this regardless of this and never had a crash or soft-lock moment.
If you want a decent exploration game with a decent plot, give this a chance. If you're looking for something exciting or unique, maybe you should pass on this on.

At the age of seven I was introduced to the computer in 2004, my grandmother shackled me to it. Decades later I am still shackled.
With that information I have to say that this game is like walking through a museum and probably one of my top 10 favorite indie games of all time. The low poly graphic aesthetic does not compromise or lose quality at any point in the game. Every world feels jam packed with visual eye candy. Every world does a great job physically representing parts of entertainment technology and the internet. The lighting, fog and particle effects are used so well it makes sense why this game does not have graphics settings outside of presets. I found myself taking screenshots in tons of areas and making gifs out of video clips from my favorite ambient locations. This is one of those games you could leave on another screen or TV of someone doing a let's play. It is visually astounding, it is a work of art. The dialogue is all just well written from the storefronts to the character dialogues to the little stupid stuff. All text in this game is either funny, big-brain lore exposition, or copyright DMCA avoidance and I loved every bit of it.
Some other random notes about the game:
The camera is an interesting item. At the start you use it to collect likes for taking pictures of what "someone" would consider great shots. Later on you unlock the glitch lens that reveals a distorted reality where you use eyeballs to open hidden passages. I like how this ability is presented because it gives this uncomfortable ease when the music distorts and the filter changes to this murky sepia. Then you find the eyeballs and open the passage and immediately turn it off. You don't like how things look but seeing things this way gets you what you want. I adore this element because it gives me this vibe of having to look at things from another much more challenging perspective, only to return to our tech haven escapist vision of the world. Maybe it's reality for as it is, this ugly poopy place that we pretend is doing well. Perhaps it's reality for those who don't get to have the glamor of going viral and winning 1 million dollars in Geocity. Maybe it's just a powerup in a game.
I am not anti-weed but I enjoy how this 2018 game shows the absolute most negative aspects of stoner culture during a time when 420 culture was really peaking. Between Chronic the Hedgehog and the ads for weed in the game it's very clear the developers were around stoners or are/were potheads themselves. Chronic is slow in unmotivated, the weed ads you click on make jokes about how smoking pretty much makes you not care about ♥♥♥♥♥♥ your life can be and the rut you're in. No the developers don't hate weed, it's just another form of escapism when overconsumed just like social media or entertainment technology such as the internet that is often referenced in game. Maybe it's also middlefinger to people who miss the nuance of the environmental storytelling? "They musta been on drugs to make this game!"
I love this game. No other game I've played has hit the same Vaporwave-esc vibe. The exploration-focused gameplay is also great to chill to.
I do wish it had achievements. Also, unless I'm doing something wrong on my end, it doesn't seem to support cloud saves.
But overall, if the weirdness of this game speaks to you, I highly recommend giving it a shot.

I'm a sucker for surreal media, weird and experimental stuff is my bread and butter, but oh my god there are some monumental issues with this game which cannot be overlooked, I want so badly to praise this game for my entire review but I just can't, I have to go over every pitfall and game ruining piece of this game so that you can make an informed decision about whether this game is even worth it.

[*]The mouse sensitivity is [b]HORRENDOUS[/b], and cannot be changed whatsoever, I went as far as to try and change my mouse sensitivity in my actual system settings, nope, no change, I don't know, just an issue with the game which you can't do anything about, it may be genuinely unplayable because of that alone for some people, it's excrutiating, especially in a few key areas.
[*]There's no achievements, which on it's own, not the end of the world, sure, but this game would seriously benefit from some achievements, so that the player can hopefully feel more confident by the end that they've seen everything the game has to offer if they've 100%ed it (remember this bullet point for a rant later on).
[*]There's no controller support (remember this for later too)
[*]The game performs worse as you get further in, so it can run perfectly fine at the start and by the very last section it's a jittery mess, I have a pretty low-end laptop, not even a gaming laptop, so I was ecstatic the game even started at first, there were a couple slightly laggy moments, I was fine with it, I expected it, that's the price I pay for playing games with this laptop, but people with high-end PCs have reported having the same issue, I was playing at 3 frames per every now and then in the last section on the lowest graphics setting, if they were having performance issues that bad too by then, there's a serious issue with the game.
[*]The quit button straight up just doesn't work, it worked a couple times for me, especially when I was earlier on in the game, but at some point it just gave up and didn't work at all from then on, no matter where I was in the game, I had to just alt tab close the game from my taskbar, that's insane, a videogame where the quit button doesn't work? Come on; that's such a basic thing to expect to work, it's a joke that it doesn't.
[*]Every time you want to save the game, you have to watch a slow save animation, you're locked in place until it's done, and to make matters worse, there's a bug where the time slow ability from the card can be stuck permanently on, and clicking to save doesn't make time revert, nope, you're sat there watching the whole thing play out even slower than it already is by default, have it play the animation, but allow me to walk away from it, I saw it the first dozen times, I don't need to watch it again.
[*]The log section of the menu can become just stuck on your face in the way, sometimes it disappears after a bit, but sometimes you're just stuck with it until you close the game and reopen it (which as you'll recall, the quit button doesn't work)
[*]One area has the most ridiculous amount of bloom for no good reason, the aesthetic of the area I guess? But just add a bloom slider, it's miserable, and I wanna add onto this point, flashing lights, I get it, it's part of the aesthetic, vibes, sure, but the game is so hostile to anyone who might need even basic accessibility options, hell even normal options that you'd expect of a game, no mouse sensitivity slider, no bloom slider, a broken quit button, and no way of reducing the flashing images, if you're in any way photosensitive you CANNOT play this game.
[*]For some people I'm sure, the aesthetics can become a bit samey, not really branching out enough, I think there's a lot to work with, but not a lot done with it, everything feels like it's spinning the same aesthetic slightly, rather than branching out into more interesting themes of old-school internet culture and it's aesthetics, I still loved the vibes and visuals, but I do think it could've done more.
[*]You don't have to pick up items super often, but when you do, it's broken and annoying, you have to be way too close or it just gets flung behind you, and if you stand too close to it, you'll get flung.
[*]Some of the, I guess platforming, is just mean, especially when the entire rest of the game is exploration and vibes, and at gets way worse in the laggier areas (and yet those seem to have the most platforming)

Now that I've got all that out the way, I wanna get to the gameplay, for the most part, it's just a sort of surreal collectathon for lack of a better term, although collectathon maybe doesn't quite fit, it's mostly exploration, some puzzles, and enjoying the vibes, the visuals, the music, I think the first section is probably one of the strongest, I did like the later ones, but the first area is really what pulls you in, although I do feel like they could've maybe branched out with that first area a little more.
There's no jump and no sprint, which is fine, although at a certain point of wandering around, a sprint would've definitely been appreciated, the walk speed isn't agonisingly slow or anything, but walking from one end of the map to another is; being able to traverse the emptier parts of the map a bit quicker would be nice, areas where you've already done everything and are just passing through to get to somewhere where you haven't done everything.
I'm not gonna pretend this is anything more than a vibes game, it's mostly atmosphere, aesthetics, some character moments, and puzzles, although no character really stuck with me after quitting, which is definitely a weak point for the game, the world itself is definitely where it's strongest, while I was playing I thought to myself "I wouldn't be surprised if Joel G played this while working on ENA", and while I don't think he did, you can get what I mean if you play it, there are strands of the same DNA in each game.
I never required a guide with this game, I'm sure some people might, and at the innernet I did look at one once specifically because I was sick of trying to navigate when it was so laggy and hard to walk around, but I know for a fact I didn't require one, if the game wasn't so insanely slow at that point I would've just looked around a bit more and found where I needed to go, so many games you'll get stuck and need a guide, but I feel like this one everything is kind of there, even if you've gotta think on it or look around a bit to know what to do with it all.
If you've got a really top tier PC, you're into surreal and atmospheric games, and you don't mind some irritating 3D platforming in a game with no jump button, this is definitely worth trying, maybe get it on sale, but it's a great experience, it's like if hypnospace outlaw was a 3D exploration game, and you're just a user instead of a moderator, although it may not have quit the same impact as hypnospace did.
Now the rant:
For at least 5 years the devs lied that they were going to add achievements, lied that they were going to add controller support, lied that they were going to add a mouse sensitivity slider, lied about god knows what else, and I think that was unacceptable, it shows a real lack of professionalism to not only be unable to deliver on things you promised, but to continue to insist that "yeah, it's just around the corner guys, we're gonna add it really soon", years after initially saying that, and expecting people to believe you, and they never did fulfil those promises.
They let down their playerbase, proved that any commitment they make can and likely will be broken, and I'm pretty sure the dev team that made this game and was working on the upcoming unmastered version has probably disbanded without a word, leaving everyone waiting.
So every single massive issue here, you've just gotta put up with it if you get this game, so make sure it's worth it for you.
Not even fully done with the game (almost done, just backtracking to find the remaining gold triangles) but man is this something. Although there is a little bit of tedium (especially having to backtrack after completing all the main quests), I still overall loved this experience and am glad to know there's a sequel on the way so I can experience something like this for the first time all over again. Also dev, please add achievements in the next game, it really would make it that much more enjoyable than it already is.

I can not even what did I just play. I mean, it is artsy adventure game without clean story, you need to read between the lines and mostly ask people on forum. It is for everybody, no, but if you like these types of adventure games, just buy it, it is fantastic.

I'm not really sure what I expected going into this game, but I really loved it. It's a bit of a walking simulator, but the visuals, humor, and mechanics make up for that. It reminds me a bit of Jazzpunk, so if that is your type of game I highly recommend this one. There are a few bugs that I noticed, one being be careful picking up certain soda cans on the floor in a later level or you'll end up being flung into the skybox and unable to come down unless you load your last save lmao. The story also shines quite a lot, but I'd say it is very up for interpretation. I personally think the game does a good job at being an analogy for escapism and the inability/fear to let go of something, even if you should.

This was a great experience, I loved the aesthetic, it made me laugh, the ending really hits though. This is another must play if you enjoy these.
Love the style. Enjoyed the story. The comedy was great. Be prepared for a buggy mess though. The UI in particular refuses to work in some areas. The state of some levels also reset when you reload which isn't the end of the world. I wish the triangle count was mapped to the UI somewhere letting me know what's left easily at a glance. More broadly speaking, since this is a collect-a-thon, I think having some UI letting me know how many "likes" and other collectibles are left on the level would entice me to explore more.
Overall, enjoyed the experience!

Good game, some segments are definitely catered to people who are in an... Altered mental state, and there's a good amount of jank, but the love the devs have put into it shine through the whole thing.

Love this game so much! Definitely one of my favories and will return from time to time. Love the atmosphere and the music, it stands out. The story is interesting, and gameplay is unique. The game does get spooky, which i like. Hope to get a VR for the sequel.

Broken Reality is a walking sim, although despite this often considered insult in the gaming community remains a masterpiece of its art form through its story, art style, and deeper implications on the nature of online spaces in the modern world. This game has made me feel more than games I have played a hundred more hours of simply due to how uniquely cyber-existential it gets.

Best purchase I've made this year and in a while. Had an incredible and fun time through the whole game. Not just because of the gorgeous levels but also because of the gameplay. Yeah, it's a little wonky but the issues I've had haven't really ruined the experience for me.
Pros:
- The obvious out of the way, the aesthetic. Surreal Y2K style which slowly turns into something a little more creepy as you progress. I've taken so many screenshots and I feel like I could've taken more.
- MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC! The game wouldn't be complete without the soundtrack. Immediately recognized CatCorp once I entered the shopping area.
- The puzzles and quests were really fun. There were maybe one or two which I found a bit difficult but I've done most of them on my own. Rarely did I need help. Most of the time I was lost due to my own occasionally slow brain.
- Perfect gameplay length. I thought I would be done with the game in the first area but once I saw that there's more, I got excited. If it were longer, it would've needed some GOOD reason to be extended. It's perfectly fine the way it is.
- Silly conversations with characters pleased me.
- I would download a car.
- Crystal Bepis.
Cons:
- Had some small issues with switching items where I had to click the number of their slot a few times before the game would register. However using Q and E proved to work just fine.
- Then there was the issue of being unable to quit the game properly. For some reason, whenever I wanted to push the quit button from the tab menu, it just wouldn't work and I could keep switching between the map, items tab, etc.
I've just finished the game. wow, just wow. it's a masterpiece. can't wait for the sequel.

This is genuinely my favourite game of all time and it has still held that spot years later. I play through this game again whenever things get rough for me and it always pulls me out of it. The art direction is absolutely beautiful, the style of everything is immensely comforting and nostalgic for me and I think it's incredibly well executed. Nothing could ever compare to the narrative and the underlying themes of this game, it all just means the world to me. If any of my friends see this, ask me about this game and I'd happily gift it to you.

Everybody needs to know about Broken Reality!
The perfect time capsule of the late 2010s internet mixed with vaporwave and all the surrounding beauty of it. It released at the height of the vaporwave craze during its' era, so there's no nostalgia baiting here. Just straight zeitgeist.

Honestly I got this game for the aesthetics, intending it to be a game to play as just something to do. It really shines in those areas, but it ended up surprising me. In summary, it gets better the longer you play.
There are little things you start to expect and love, like reappearing characters or funny quips, which are contrasted with a growing unsettling story. And of course, the visual style is AMAZING. Gameplay was sometimes very boring, but overall it's a 7/10 imo!
Amazing. Play it, don't look anything up beforehand.

数十年後の仮想空間世界にて、何かよーわからん理由で迷い込んだ主人公。
通貨よりも「いいね！」を稼ぐためにそこらじゅうを探検する。
「んな設定とか理由とか気にしてんのお前だけだよｗｗｗｗ」と言わんばかりに、
奇々怪々な世界とNPCと出来事に出くわす。
とりまパシャっとこうぜ。
意外とプレイ時間と探索時間が嵩む。
変な地形移動させたくないからダッシュとか移動が劇的にしやすくなる動作は無いので、
少し移動中とか、まったく判らない状況に出くわすと少しテンポ遅いなぁ～って思うことはあれど、
根本的に難しい要素は無いので結構スイスイ進む
強いて言うなら一番右のアイテムを積極的に使うことを意識しよう。
といえども、全部を集める気力とかが無いのであれば恐らく4~6時間でプレイ完了する。

エリアごとの強く印象的なBGMとテーマが繰り広げられる。
また英語に造詣のありつつミームに詳しいのであれば、あらゆる広告が面白おかしく映る。
そこにさらにクエスト名・地名・建物看板とかも合わさると
擦れた社会人の皮肉の結晶こと某掲示板でのブラックジョーク群に負けないギャグをかます。

それ以外でも超ド級のNPCだらけなので、印象に残らないなんてことは無いだろう。
あとここまで触れてこなかったが、当たり前のように日本語訳は無いが、
上記のジョーク群以外を除いて英単語把握能力は必要ないと思うので頑張ろう。

攻略の閲覧に関してだが、大人しくガイドの英文を生成AIで翻訳する以外にも
YouTubeで幾つかRTA動画があったりするのでそこからヒントを得るのもOK。
ただ上記でも言った通りなんかそれっぽい奴らを適当に追ってたらたぶん何となくクリアできるハズ。

不必担心可玩性，剧情长度适中，道具的手感超爽。解谜丰富有趣，也没有过于困难，可能是我比较爱玩解谜游戏的原因？如果遇到比较缺乏引导所以卡壳的情况，可以去b站搜索实况视频解决，我不希望有任何中文玩家因此而放弃体验该游戏，因为它真的很优秀。qmq

Nice solid experience. Keeps you engaged throughout. A little rough technically however. I would've appreciated a bigger field of view and some streamlining of the controls. There's really not much sense in dividing the player's abilities into six different items. The game would've been much more smooth if the abilities were assigned to different commands or were otherwise context-sensitive.
Probably won't grab ya' on the story side, but the focus is very much on the exploration. On that front the game really nails it.
Platforming on acid with fun characters and atmosphere
I've completed this game multiple times and it never gets old. Can be as long or short as you want it to be. One of my favorite games of all time.
"gameplay" gets rather boring after a while and the humor devolves into mildly edgy stuff that hasn't aged very well.

Highly recommended! Loved the art throughout, lovely environments, fun puzzles! Wish there were more exploration games like this.

It’s a vibe, and honestly well polished for what it is
vaporwave masterpiece; to me, the apex of aesthetic consistency that indie developers should strive towards. i'm astonished every time i am reminded this game released in 2018, only a few years removed from the peak of its subject matter. broken reality is really what it felt like to be chronically online in 2015-2017.

İ adore this game, the gameplay is meh. But the world, its really nice. The characters are charming and the world does not feel empty, it feels really alive. The visuals look very nice and i adore the vaporwave aesthetic. The quests are actually kinda, fun? But most of the fun comes from exploring. İ reccomend.
