Beatbuddy is a charming underwater adventure where the music genuinely comes alive through the environment — watching creatures and obstacles pulse in sync with the electroswing soundtrack is something I hadn't experienced before in a game. The hand-drawn visuals are gorgeous, and the first couple of levels kept me grinning as each new creature layered another beat into the track. That said, the controls feel frustratingly floaty, and I lost count of how many times Beatbuddy refused to pick up an object or darted off in the wrong direction at the worst possible moment. The gameplay also gets repetitive fast, leaning heavily on the same bounce-pad and reflector-tile puzzles throughout all six levels, and I hit at least one progress-blocking bug that forced me to restart a chapter from scratch. If you can catch it on sale and you're drawn in by the music concept, it's worth a few hours of your time — just go in knowing the 'game' part doesn't quite live up to the 'beat' part.

The premise of beat-based platforming is interesting but is used way too infrequently to be interesting or challenging. I only made it to the second level before I got bored. Most of the game is simple platform moving and moving around levels that are way too large, where you have to move into every corner to find all the collectibles. There is no real exploration, just simple busy work if you want to get all the shiny goodies. The game has sections where you really need to move with the beat to avoid damage and maybe they get more frequent later on. But I don't want to play through a basic platformer without being challenged at all to get to a few seconds of actual gameplay.

If you look for a simple rhythm based game with good music, this game might be for you though.

hmm. mostly pretty good, but kinda buggy and it can softlock you, and for a rhythm game it's very hard to accurately hit the beat that you can hear perfectly fin, but it refuses to accept until you figure out the unique delay it wants for each thing. it really does not feel good like 1/8th of the time, but that's enough to sour the whole experience a fair bit :\

I suppose that people who are all about music, would just love to pull themselves through this kind of junk if there is technically a beat in the game. If this was stuck forever in your backlog, I'd recommend skipping it.

You have no idea where to go, puzzles are so simple, gameplay goes from being tedious and mediocre to being too hard.

When looking for a way out, you often find hidden areas filled with coins, of which there is no use (yet).

The game simply feels pointless due to these things.

Представьте себе микс из ритм-игры и какой-то сказочной истории. Вот именно так можно описать эту игру. Главный герой тут – ваш верный музыкальный друг, который не просто тусит, а ещё и спасает мир от всякой нечисти. Да-да, всё именно так, и это просто бомба!

Геймплей – это отдельная тема для разговора. Тут вам и забавные мини-игры с музыкой, и всякие битбокс-баталии. Всё это сопровождается классной графикой и забавными анимациями. Каждый уровень – это как мини-концерт, где ты не только слушаешь музыку, но и активно участвуешь в процессе.

Особенно порадовала атмосфера. Разработчики явно заморочились с дизайном уровней и саундтреком. Всё это создаёт какое-то волшебное настроение, хочется просто сидеть и наслаждаться происходящим.

Из минусов могу отметить только то, что некоторые уровни могут показаться однообразными, но это не критично. В целом, игра реально затягивает и не отпускает до самого конца.

Так что, если вы любите что-то необычное и хотите провести время с удовольствием, то эта игра – ваш выбор. Однозначно рекомендую всем, кто ещё не пробовал!

C'est une véritable œuvre d’art interactive. Chaque niveau est construit autour de morceaux musicaux dynamiques qui ne servent pas juste de fond sonore : ils influencent directement le gameplay. Karakterimiz Beatbuddy, kız kardeşleri Harmony ve Melody ile güçlerini birleştirip şeytani Prens Maestro'yu durdurmak için bir göreve çıkar. Hikaye bu kadar kaldı ki hikaye çok ilginizi çekecek ön planda olan bir iş değil.

Oyun tamamen sırtını müziklerine ve beatlerine dayayan bir indie oyun. Su altında jölemsi ana karakterimiz ile birbirinden güzel tema müzikleri ile ritimle eğleniyor, ufak puzzleları çözerek bölümlerde ilerliyoruz. Genelde puzzlelar bi yerlerden sekerek duvarları kırmak, ufak tefek ışıkları birbirine yansıtmak vs gibi basit bulmacalar. Oyundaki düşmanlar, çiçekler vs herşey müziğin ritmine uyum sağlıyor. Oyunun çoğunluğunda ritme dikkat ederek oynamanız gerekiyor.

(For those of you who know a thing or two about beatboxing).

It took me almost 10 years to play this game myself, but not because I was hesitant or apprehensive, it just didn't happen and I was too distracted with other things. The first time I noticed the existence of this game, was when I was traveling by train for a gig in Hamburg (Funny coincidence, since Threaks was a studio located in Hamburg) and next to me and my partner sat a mother with her son who was nodding his head and grinning while playing something on his Wii.
As soon as we sat down with them, I was very curious about what he was playing, but I didn't want to be rude and the kid also had headphones on and I didn't want to interrupt him either, so as he was sitting directly opposite me, I couldn't catch a glimpse of the game but I wanted to find out what was going on. After a while, the boy finally took a break, put the console on his lap and accidentally kicked me under the table as his handheld almost slipped off. He looked at me and apologized very politely and there was my chance to ask...

I could tell the story in even more detail and go into what the boy told me about the game back then and what he liked and didn't like about it, but who really cares about that? right? You probably just want to know whether I can recommend Beatbuddy Tale of the Guardians or not, which I definitely do if you are looking for a little fun and charming musical adventure, in a wonderful looking world with its groovy captivating gameplay. The game features 6 distinct levels, each with 5 chapters that are implemented with great creativity in terms of audiovisual presentation and level design.
And musically, there's entertaining and driving electroswing to enjoy.

Beatbuddy Swing by Parov Stelar is a kinda signature work of the Austrian producer and provides an immediate boost into the game and makes your foot bounce. The song Love Swing by Sabrepulse is just as dynamic and brimming with energy. It incorporates more chiptune elements, which is hardly surprising for those familiar with the artist's style, and also fits in perfectly here. The next one takes on a more soulful turn and is one of my personal highlights of the soundtrack. Lost In Yesterday by Europa Deep is a beautiful dreamy acid-jazz song with equally captivating vocals. Fancy more Jamiroquai or Prince vibes? Then here's my next favorite: I'm Your Star by Curtis Newton, probably the guy from Munich who stole Captain Future's name ; )
I have to say at this point that what he usually does is not my cup of tea at all, I'm so not into deep house and techno, and although the song copies patterns and styles extremely, but it's a good one and here it works wonderfully. You Are The One by La Rochelle Band shifts again to a more electronic stomping sytle, it’s likely the soundtrack needed a kinda classic four-to-the-floor track, which I can understand and totally accept. Stingin' Swing by Austin Wintory bears some similarities to the previous one but stands out way more with its own distinct flair. It's packed with a variety of sounds, instruments, and shifting patterns. The blend of these elements with the classically sung vocals creates an epic and captivating listening experience.

I had plenty of fun during my time there in Symphonia, and even though opinions and feelings on the spin-off are quite divided, I’ll soon be playing Beatbuddy On Tour as well. Something else I can imagine is a sequel: Beatbuddy Remixed.
I could come up with tons of ideas right now, but unfortunately it will probably never happen, which is a shame because a game like Beatbuddy is something for young and old children who love those kind of games. Well, if you had the game on your list for a long time like I did or just discovered and now decided to play it, I can only hope that it gives you as much pleasure as it did for me.

If you've enjoyed musical platform/puzzle games, you'll like this one. I had a bunch of fun memories. It's not goty, but for the amazingly low price you can get it, who cares.

Also, gammes that sync with music are rare enough, so this one is worth mentioning.

Nice rythm game, but felt somewhat lacking. It's very casual and hardly challenging, which it's ok if that's what you are looking for, I was expecting something slightly more challening and enganging.
Still pretty good though, there's nothing essentially wrong with that.

This game is very meh, and I don't want to give it a bad review but I also do not want to give it a recommend because I wouldn't recommend this game to be completely honest.

The game is 6 levels long with about 4 chapters each level. The play style alternates between one chapter going through the level and solving very basic puzzles and sometimes fighting an enemy as Beatbuddy while the next chapter has you driving a submarine and the gameplay changes into a very basic bare bone Shmup to solve puzzles, you don't really fight enemies in the submarine either. The story of the game is also very basic and there wasn't a lot of it. Even the ending of the game was very lackluster and not exciting. The one thing I did like about the game was the Music aspect. Each level plays a song from a different genre of EDM. The environment and enemies react to the song and things that you can interact with in the levels affect the music as well, with certain things adding instruments and beats while others take away from it, which makes the game a bit charming. However, that alone Isn't enough to to make this game a must play. There is also a bug in the game where if you die, you can potentially make everything stop interacting with the music, which makes it a problem because there is a plant you have to destroy by hitting it with the beat of the song to solve puzzles and that plant will stop dancing which makes you unable to destroy it and force you to restart the whole level.

With the vast options that we have for indie games or just games in general, I would say to just skip this game entirely, there are far better things to play that are far more engaging and fun. This game Isn't terrible, but unless you're a small child that is new to video games or someone that has absolutely no idea what video games are or does not know how to play a video game, then this is not worth your time.

Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians is a music rhythm puzzle game that has some fantastic music and fun puzzles. You bop around the screen bashing things in time to the beat to break open new paths, or dodge bullets so you can progress to the next section.

It is generally fun to play but has an entirely forgettable story and it is plagued by game-killing bugs. I saw a few along the way, whole sections not spawning for example, but was able to get around them and then when I was right at the end the game lost a key item I needed to progress. I only had one save and so would have had to start again to get there and, well, the game wasn't really fun enough for that I'm afraid.

If you can avoid the bugs you'll have some fun here but they killed it for me sadly.

It's a fun little game but if you die there is a high chance that something in the level breaks and you have to restart. After the 5th time this happened I just gave up trying to finish it.

If you get it for free or in a bundle, sure, not a bad game, just don't pay anything for it.

A few odd bugs aside. (Most notably, do not pause the game in level 4 until you're on the first vehicle section as it kept soft locking me.) This is a phenomenal little game with a great big heart, fun visuals and characters, excellent music that builds to the mechanical beats of the levels and surprisingly tight controls considering it's a water based affair. Grab it when you can.

Played up until about half way through the penultimate level (act?) until I finally let myself acknowledge I wasn't enjoying it and there was no reason to force myself to finish. I found navigating the world to be a chore, whether solo or in the ship, and the story wasn't really interesting enough to keep me going. It also didn't help that at least once a play session, the ship would bug out and I couldn't fire the turret unless I quit and restarted the game. To its credit, the music is good (just very loud) and it has a nice look.

(Also the way they structure the collectible system is a major pet peeve of mine. Literally hundreds of gems scattered through each level and unless you find every single, you get nothing. Again, there are hundreds of them!)

Un petit jeu indé sympathique mais qui est un peu décevant sur la forme.
Le fait est qu'il met en avant son côté rythmique basé sur la musique etc, sauf que dans les faits il se rapprochera plus d'un plateformeur genre 'Shiny The Firefly' ou plus des niveaux aquatiques d'un Rayman Legends par exemple avec une partie plus puzzle & avec des 'bumper' où l'on rebondira automatiquement...
Le côté rythmique étant juste d'avancer un peu plus rapidement avec des mini dashs ou taper plusieurs fois un obstacle en rythme (& qui ne colle pas forcément tout le temps avec la musique en plus)
6 gros niveaux divisés en plusieurs parties qu'on pourra resélectionner comme on veut, excepté que les temps & collectibles ne seront pas comptés à moins de refaire le niveau entièrement ce qui écrasera la précèdente sauvegarde... (donc pas très intéressant vu qu'ils se réinitialisent à chaque fois)
Sans compté les bugs de progression bloquant où les scripts ne fonctionnent pas...
Un bon premier jeu malgré tout qui était un projet d'études à la base mais qui souffre de quelques défauts un peu irritant.

Look, I bought this game years ago and I only now managed to finish it. The music and the visuals are stellar, but everything else is so janky. As mentioned, I only finished this game a couple of years later, since it was just so frustrating to play. The environment has so many corners, that it makes the character stuck on edges and killed by the timed animals in the area. So many broken textures. There are even broken textures in the credits?! Some parts of the map were straight up missing for me. Some of the plants and creatures can be 'turned off' by hitting switches, but would revert back after you finish a level, but when I would move on to the next stage the creatures would still be turned off and I couldn't get though the game. I was stuck in so many areas and re-starting from last checkpoint wouldn't change a thing, so you would need to re-start the whole stage over and over, which lost me a lot of progress.
Like I said, this game had so much going for it, but if only the developers would come back to fix the game so it is actually playable, then it would be a upvote no question.

A bit hard to describe, but kind of a 2D, puzzle platformer, rhythm game without the platforms taking place underwater. I guess the game had a story but not sure what it was other than save your sister from the bad guy. The game has two locomotion types, one where you swim and another where you pilot a submarine type of vessel. You do not choose these modes, they are dictated by the level. More of the game is swimming, and that also has more of the puzzles as you can interact with the world more. The sub hops to the beat when moving and can shoot and regenerate so those areas tend to be easier and quicker. The puzzles are pretty straightforward and mainly consist of setting up some bouncers so you can destroy obstacles and timing based sequences where you need to carry power to a new source while dodging dangerous environments and enemies. There are some other interesting things going on like perspective changing devices but these mostly felt like a novelty. The rhythm aspect, in terms of gameplay, is kind of limited and can largely be ignored and just helps you avoid damage if you time things right.

The game has it's good points, mainly in the presentation and music. Nice 2D graphics, great animation and a soundtrack that all the enemies pulse to. The gameplay itself is somewhat fun, but nothing to get excited about.

Negatives would mainly be the movement (playing with the mouse). Your character is swimming and has a certain momentum, which makes stopping where you want pretty tough sometimes. Unfortunately the game will often require you to stop to avoid bullets or whatnot, which is awkward. Also it is controlled by where your mouse cursor is currently positioned. That's fine but sometimes you just lose track of where it is and have trouble going where you want. Normally it's not a big deal but you will often be required to do some precise movements, especially late in the game, and this can be frustrating. Some of the late game puzzles/challenges also were not so fun like a big maze you need to move walls around for with little direction. Fun at first, but became tedious and wasn't helped by having to it twice as I was supposed to kill all the enemies in there but was never told that. Also there are places in the game where you can get stuck or triggers fail to happen and have to restart the level (luckily you can). Happened to me once and saw others mention it for other areas. Beyond that, the puzzles are all pretty simple. The only tough aspects are sometimes figuring out what you are supposed to do, where you are supposed to go or just getting there fast enough.

Overall, the game is fine but not my cup of tea. If you are looking for something to occupy a handful of hours, it fits the bill but likely won't be anything you remember for very long unless you really love the music.

The game is very focused on music and pressing buttons to the beat of the background music.
The puzzles are simplistic and sometimes more tedious than they are fun or challenging.
There are a few timed passages which are purely frustrating to try over and over again only to fail because you messed up one button press and got out of rhythm briefly.

I found the controlls a bit too unreliable for the game to really be a fun experience

Beautiful art style, simple game play, nice music. Just a bit boring for me to keep my interest. Borderline vote - I wish I could vote neutral. If you like puzzling side scrolling platforming games, its likely for you, but not for me.

Oh boy. I finished this game years ago. Might as well drop a review.

The music is great. This is where the good things I have to say about it end.

The main... 4ish tracks were excellent choices... but they get very repetitive. The puzzles were braindead and also repetitive. The writing was incredibly boring to me. The first time I played this, I got a game breaking bug that made me drop the game for 5 years. Didn't get that the second time around fortunately.

But yeah, there are many other games that are so much better than this. It was a dreary experience. It was boring in almost all senses of the word

I don't like steam's binary rating system, so don't read this as a hard "pass".
The game has a clever concept, and the electro swing music is great. It's got cute characters and story. But after a while, I just found it to be getting repetitive in terms of gameplay.
I wanted to keep playing, but just got bored.
If you're looking for a casual cute music oriented game, this definitely is worth playing, but don't expect it to wow you.

While this game does have some good things going for it, I felt like the premise of a puzzle game where you must act on the timing of a beat doesn't work with floaty underwater controls. None of the puzzles themselves were particular hard; the difficulty came from fighting with the controls which I found really annoying.

The story also feels half-baked and the ending wasn't very satisfying.

The art is great though and you might just enjoy the game if you enjoy the soundtrack (I did not)

There's a lot of style in this game, and some of the core ideas are very solid. The problem is that the game doesn't do much with those ideas. The music is good, and everything moves to its beat, so going through the levels is a pleasant experience. But it's not a rhythm game, and it's not a good arcade / puzzle / adventure game either. The levels are a just a bit repetitive, the mechanics don't evolve much, and there's no gameplay climax at the end. On the positive side, it doesn't overstay its welcome.

The rhythm aspect of the gameplay is limited to predicting patterns, like when a turret is going to stop shooting, based on the beats. This was a nice start, but at some point I was expecting to face a more sustained rhythmic challenge where I would need to consider the actions at every beat for a few consecutive musical bars, but the challenges just aren't built that way.

I can't recommend against it because, as I said, it's a pleasant experience, but I was expecting more.

This game started out fine, but then it got bogged down.
At first it was a fairly standard puzzle collectathon - but then numerous issues emerged.

First, the "enemies" - they're not really enemies - they're obstacles. And yes, I realize that enemies typically are obstacles - but in this game that's pretty much all they are.
You could take away the art and replace them with circles and you'd get fairly the same effect - they're just in the way, for the sake of being in the way. I don't know if the developers thought they would be a "challenge" - but they're just maddening.
In the beginning it's rare to see enemies - but then you get an "upgrade" later that essentially combines two of your abilities into one. And they teach you how to use it in
a training ground - but then they just swarm you with enemies almost immediately thereafter and it doesn't really matter that there's health orbs - the upgrade
isn't that useful in that situation, you essentially have to time *running away* until you finally get it and are able to deal with it.

But that takes way too long, in a game with very diminishing returns. Let's talk about the collectathon aspect for a moment. You get introduced to the purple
"shiny trinkets" early on and are told that they're good, for reasons. So if you've been trying to collect them, great. Except for the stage design.

Since most people won't be following a guide directly, there are forks in the proverbial road. So if you veer left and that's the way the game progresses,
too bad, so sad! You can't go back to get those purple collectables that you missed unless you restart the level. And this game isn't good enough to restart
a level.

All the trinkets do is open up a game dev gallery anyways, as far as I can tell. And I don't care what happens if you get all of them. That's the problem.
The game makes you not care.

Eventually vehicle sections are introduced, allowing the player to shoot certain enemies. And while this is satisfying, it gets increasingly obnoxious when
you realize that although you have limited ammo, your gun overheats - and the enemies respawn - meaning that unless you time it just right, you'll get hit
even though you should be able to shoot. And be hit you will. Over and over again, ping-ponging back and forth between enemies. The slight saving grace
is that the ship auto-heals, but even that's not enough. If the overheating was removed, it would be so much more pleasant to do the ship sections.
But again, I think that's the developer's idea of challenge - I call it a *slog*.

And I hope you like autoscrollers! Because although the initial levels take a metroidvania-esque exploration aspect, the ship levels tend to be autoscrolling,
and there are some parts where you need to go in one direction very fast - regardless of the shiny trinkets you are missing - because again, you cannot go back.

The musical choices are also very strange. I *know* that at least two, maybe three music tracks in this game have vocals. But I couldn't tell you what the heck
the lyrics were, because although I checked (and all I found was a simple audio slider) for sound options, for some reason the backing music is so muted
I cannot hear the lyrics except in certain parts.

With all the forced "keep going" in the game, it tires you out and you lose caring about the plot. You just want to finish the game to finish the game and move on,
those eight feared words, "I don't care what happens to these people" - or in this case, Symphonians?

The puzzles are mostly OK, but there was one and pretty much only one that was out of place, or at least I don't recall being taught the basics of the solution.
You have to grab a power generator that is opening a gate, and bounce around and then dash to get out of the gate that's closing with the generator.
However, since that was like the only one that did that, I kept trying (and failing) to take the generator with me through a red portal that will only transport
you. Other than that one, the puzzles were fine. And since there's a lot of puzzles, that's a good thing that didn't really add to the frustration.

The other big frustrating part was the health system. Essentially, there's a health bar and you hit orbs to get health back. But it's pretty pointless.
Checkpoints are generally pretty good in this game, so if you die, who cares. But it does matter with these spiky things that you can temporarily disable.
It seems very odd that some of them are one hit kills and yet some of them aren't. And when you try to get through them, very often the controls lead you
to getting caught on the side and then bam, one hit kill. Or in the ship sections, bounced around enemies. The controls of this game aren't the controls that
the game really should have shipped with - better tiny movement options would prevent the sticking that occurred with the enemies. Also,
with the health, the only real reason to keep it high is because the developers made the terrible decision of making the colors all messed up when the health is low.
It's more annoying than the Zelda low heart announce sound - so you'll get the orbs, even if you probably could have used them later, just because the UI is now awful.

All in all, this game isn't worth the experience and the gameplay gets really old really fast. I am glad I don't have to replay this.
I think you should be glad if you never played it in the first place.
And I'm kinda sad I have to write this out, because I know developing games is hard work and I know the developers tried - but it just didn't take.
An admirable effort still falls flat - and this one did.

I was unable to complete the game due to a game-breaking bug, which didn't resolve when I restarted the level. There are also several game-breaking bugs reported by other players, in different parts of the game, which appear to have never been addressed by the developer. It's a shame because it's a cute game that I enjoyed for the time that I was able to play and progress in it.

The music part of this game is not, that you move to the music, but that creatures/enemies create music. Which is actually kinda neat, but not enough to make up for the missing rhythm movement.

And the movement that is in the game, is "floaty"(like you still move for a good part, after you let go of the controls) and interactions have a very low tolerance level. So have fun hitting the one pixel to interact with something while drifting past it.

I had this game floating around my steam library for quite a long time. I have no regrets about the decision to give this a try. It´s a really nice game with a focus on the (really good) music. Each level is dedicated to an other song. I really like the graphics. Some areas can be a bit frustrating and the ending is a bit sudden. But over all I would recommend this game.

I really wish I could recommend this game. Sadly, it breaks and glitches all too often.

I have a relatively good PC. Its meant for handling VR, 3D modeling, and server hosting, so it's equipped to handle tough graphics and processing. This game regularly drops frames and lags with nothing else open. Not only that, but the enemies break and stop moving, which stops progression of the game at level 4. Restarting the level, checkpoint, rebooting the game etc doesn't fix it. Validating the files won't fix it. I'm personally just stalled out there in the parasite nest "shortcut" area with no way to fix it so it will go again.

I do have good things to say about the game! It's very cute and simple in a good way. The puzzles are elementary, but fun enough to solve. The music and art are both charming in their own way, and all of the areas have their own little theme going on. It has a lot of potential to be a great little game. They just desperately need to fix some playability and quality of life issues.
