Pour les amoureux du Métroidvania, c'est une lettre d'amour envers le genre.

L'histoire est sympathique sans être exceptionnelle, les personnages sont attachants et le jeu est conçu pour mourir au moins une quarantaine-soixantaine de fois.

8/10 très largement mérité, le jeu principal se fait en une bonne dizaine d'heure mais il reste du contenu à côté et est aisément complétable à 100% sur steam. Recommandé.

I received this game in a bundle of metroidvanias and this game wasn't what really appealed to me at first, but then I played and then I love it!. This is such a great game with lot's of mechanincs, secrets and lots of really cool upgrades. No wonder anyone that played it likes it! The only bad thing that is a bit unballenced is the purchase of upgrades (I just maxed out wizard and almost always played with him), but this is very minor since the game still was fun. One last thing, the pixelart is so good, which is a thing that I was a bit worried it would get old soon.

The fact that you have to start at the beginning each time you start is awful, even with new paths you open. I tought I had discovered an elevator but nope, don't know what this is for. The currency is too slow to get so it takes forever before you can actually spend it. The movement is slowww, very very slow. When you this a certain character (each one has its skills), you have to go back to the fire then travel again to the point where you were stuck. Very bad design.

Cara o jogo é divertidinho, tem umas músiquinhas legaizinhas, gráficos legais pra estilo 8 bits, uma gameplay legalzinha uma historia okay kk. Meus problemas com o jogo é mais que ele é um metroidvania saBOR rougue like, por algum motivo os dev achou que um jogo onde cada vez q vc morre você começa DO COMEÇO do mapa ia ser divertido ainda mais que os teleportes são um por area e longe faz o jogo ficar bem chato em alguns momentos.

Sobre dificuldade o jogo é no geral okay, você morre um monte mas pode comprar upgrades permanentes e os chefes são bem faceis, pra ter noção eu n morri uma vez contra o boss final.

This game has truly proven to be a gem.

The gameplay, despite being simple, is well-diversified and deep. Switching between characters makes a lot of sense, as does approaching the various enemies with the right tactics.

The music is wonderful, and the retro 8-bit style, with a modern touch, is a perfect match.

I really enjoyed the map progression and the rogue-lite mechanics, as well as the length and the number of secrets and items to collect, which makes you want to do it 100%.

The boss fights are fun, but perhaps I could have pushed the difficulty a little more.

I enjoyed the story and the narrative, even if it's nothing groundbreaking or particularly original.

I played about 21 hours and completed the two main runs 100%. Highly recommended.

This game for me was a journey, a journey into learning how to fall in love with a game.

It started off on a very wrong foot for me. The beginning is very slow, the character are weak, the ranged characters are very slow, and the very close range of Arias made me feel unconfortable in approaching the enemies due to my low HP. The game is buily with the idea of making you die over and over in order to built up your powers with the souls dropped by the enemies, and the amount of stuff available to buy legit gave me choice paralysis at times.

I was this close on dropping the game, but I persevered, started a new file, dropped everything into just powering up my characters and ignoring most of the other stuff in the shop, my slow progress was getting better I costantly found new secrets, new power ups, new characters. Algus's magic combined with Arias's reflect ability easily became the MVP and thus I was hooked, I was having fun, I was curoius about exploring every nook and cranny of this tower. 15 hours later I got my 100% completion.

Let this be a lesson to everyone reading this. Never give up!

Есть всё от карты со множеством секретов и альтернативных путей с секретами до режима прохождения альтернативными персонажами как за верджела в ДМС)
Не так затянута как hollow knight, и куда разнообразнее чем axiom verge.
Однозначная рекомендация!

A fun metroidvania. I was put off by the graphics at first, but am glad I pushed through. One big drawback is the bizarre control mapping, both on controller and keyboard. You can change the mapping, but it changes it back to defaults every time you restart the game. Recommend using steam controller inputs.

An odd combination of Metroidvania and Roguelite that works surprisingly well. With the biggest mark against it being that I've had a rather difficult time learning the map due to the loop of death -> start from beginning -> death that it's got going on.

Though with the amount of shortcuts, teleports and other movement options throughout, it's never too difficult to get where you were. Mostly.

A jogabilidade é, sem exagero, excelente. Os controles são precisos, a progressão é satisfatória e o jogo constantemente recompensa a exploração e o domínio das habilidades de cada personagem. Existe um equilíbrio muito bem construído entre estratégia e ação, o que mantém a experiência sempre interessante.

A dificuldade pode ser desafiadora para quem não está acostumado com o gênero metroidvania, especialmente no início, quando o jogador ainda está aprendendo os padrões e limitações. No entanto, de modo geral, é um jogo bastante justo e extremamente gostoso de jogar. A sensação de progresso é constante, e cada pequena conquista é gratificante.

Astalon é aquele tipo de jogo sabor de cartucho raro que você alugaria sem saber nada e acabaria virando favorito secreto. Eu descreveria como “parece antigo, mas não é velho”. Imagina um castelo gigantesco cheio de caminhos secretos, onde cada derrota na real te deixa mais esperto (depois de muitos vai e vem pra lá e pra cá vc se torna mais sabio, ou não). A vibe de quando a gente insistia no mesmo jogo até decorar cada cantinho. Sensação de descoberta constante, como se cada porta abrisse uma historinha nova. Dá uma nostalgia meio coletiva, não de um título específico, mas daquela época em que explorar era metade do jogo e a outra metade era a teimosia.

Awesome game. The main, mandatory stuff is top tier metroidvania but also:
- Optional stuff quality is uneven. It ranges from good to annoying (specially without a guide) or underwhelming. Not getting some specific optional stuff early forces you to backtrack too much.
- Learning curve did not feel right. Getting through the beginning was a little rough, but bosses are generally a little too simple and easy.

But I still definitely recommend this

Near perfection! Classic style with modern movement makes for a rewarding experience of exploring the castle to 100% things. Late game combat could have benefited from some more required character switching, cause Algus can just disintegrate things (which is also fun) and the end game was easier than the start due to the upgrades outscaling the enemies.

Great game, though it took me a while to warm up to it, definitely a slow burner. Once it clicks, it becomes seriously addictive. That said, it can still feel a bit obtuse at times, and tracking down the last white key was a real pain.

It has unmistakable old-school NES charm, for better or worse. I finished at 99% map/items in 21:21, then went back for 100% in-game completion, maxed all five heroes, and reached the 150 HP cap at 23:02 in-game time.

I had a lot of fun with this. It required a good bit of thinking to get around. Not like La Mulana levels, but there were a lot of those 'ah ha' moments that hit you with a bit of that dopamine. A lot of the upgrades felt substantial, which is also really good. Over all a really solid metroidvania and worth playing.

This is an absolute gem of a game, and I highly recommend anyone who grew up on the NES, anyone who loves side scrollers, and anyone who loves metroidvanias to give this a shot.

It combines some elements of the roguelite (ie in between run progress) with a traditional metroidvania, traveling through a labyrinthine map, finding new mechanics, beating bosses, and then backtracking to find where to utilize that new mechanic to explore further.

It's incredibly tightly designed, trickling in new mechanics at just the right pace to keep you engaged and learning.

The ONLY thing keeping this game from being perfect is that there are some navigation hiccups that are obviously an homage to NES gaming that I think could have been handled slightly better. Most of the times that I stopped playing was due to getting lost trying to find a particular room, not losing over and over to a certain fight.

If you like hollow knight, if you like megaman, if you like zelda, or if you like Castelvania. You need to do yourself a favor and pick this up. The sense of discovery is something I yearn for in games. We need more like this.

Fun little metroidvania type game that's worth a playthrough. Some people might be put off by the characters' simple movesets but I found that part of the game very charming, that each character is like a discrete tool for solving a certain set of problems. I liked the main party's dynamic, Algus doing his best to mentor and watch over the two kids was endearing to watch.

世界滅亡後の地球に突如現れた謎の塔を探索するファミコン風のメトロイドヴァニア。
主人公切り替え、作り込まれた広大なマップ、ファミコン風グラフィック、テンション上がるBGMが特徴。
マップは考えられたギミックや敵配置で隠し部屋も多くて探索しがいがある。
道中やボス戦の熱いBGMがプレイを盛り上げてくれる！（地下墓地と通常ボス戦がお気に入り）
海外のゲームだが、キャラデザは漫画家の見田竜介氏が手掛けている。

特殊なのが、主人公達はエピメテウスとの誓約により死んでも塔の入り口からやり直せる事。
死ぬ度に塔の入り口からやり直しなので人を選ぶ要素でもある。
ファストトラベルポイントも少なく、前回死んだエリアまで戻るのがかなり面倒。
アップグレードも死んだ時のみ行う。※中盤から特定のポイントでも可能
問題点は、集めたオーブ（お金）で強化アイテムを買うのだが、アイテムの説明がなく買わないと効果が分からない事。

■3人の主人公 [spoiler]※隠しキャラ2人で計5人[/spoiler]
・魔法使いアルガスは魔法による中距離攻撃。とにかく万能すぎて道中、ボス戦ともに大活躍！
・盗賊クユリは壁蹴り要員、最初は弱すぎる弓だがアップグレードで化ける。
・剣士アリアスはダッシュで高速移動出来るのは良いが、剣のリーチのなさが致命的すぎる。

キャラ性能の問題でアルガスメインになると思う。
アリアスはダッシュに無敵があれば道中の移動要員として使えたのだが。

難易度は普通（キャラが弱い序盤はちょっと大変）
アクションが苦手な人でもキャラをしっかり強化すれば大丈夫だ、問題ない。
ただし、HP回復手段がないに等しく被弾のリスクが半端ない！
配置数が少ない燭台破壊（有限）やストーリーが進行した時だけセーブポイントでHPを少量回復出来る。
敵が回復アイテムを落としたり、セーブポイントでの全回復はない。

プレイ時間は15時間前後。
クリア後はボスラッシュモードと敵を主人公にしたモード2種が開放。
本編100%クリアや3つの追加モードを含めると20～30時間くらいは遊べるボリュームがある。
ローカライズは若干違和感があるが十分許容範囲。

余談だが、ボス撃破後の演出（約40秒）が長くてテンポが悪い。
最初のボス撃破した時に演出が長すぎてラスボスかと思ったわ･･･
本編はともかく、ボスラッシュモード時だけでも演出カットしてほしかった。

一开始以为是个简单的像素魂类游戏，结果越到后面惊喜越多，一开始以为这游戏就是死后成长，通过营地换人开路，然后[spoiler]半路就能解除营地换人的限制，钱也慢慢容易收集了 [/spoiler]，之后发现[spoiler]竟然还有新角色 [/spoiler]，最后就是[spoiler]五个人一起尽情探索收集 [/spoiler]。而且这游戏攻击手感其实很好，[spoiler]尤其有鞭子后 [/spoiler]越玩越爽。[spoiler]通关后发现还有新角色，新角色竟然是泡澡回血就很有意思 [/spoiler]。然后通关后发现TMD主线二周目[spoiler]探索的路线不一样了，这不又是个新游戏了吗？ [/spoiler]简直不要太爽！

Astalon is an excellent metroidvania with a slow start. It can take quite a while to get used to the game mechanics, and there are certainly a number of NES Metroid-esque hidden required paths, but that does not drop my overall opinion. It may be a slow start, but when the game clicks, it absolutely clicks. What an experience, highly recommend.

Astalon is a fantastic metroidvania with a bunch of unique, well-executed ideas about progression. Healing is sparse with one huge exception: dying. The main gameplay loop is explore, do some bite-sized puzzles, kill some enemies, die, and do that again but better until you've found everything and/or beaten the game. I've seen reviews calling this tedious or a waste of time, but I don't remember feeling that at any point in my initial ~17 hour playthrough; you're not really repeating the same rooms/sequences as much as you're iteratively developing routes to new places and strategies to deal with troublesome encounters.

I think the main flaw of the game is the alternate game modes, since those largely strip away this iterative experience and add some time sinks to regenerate health; I've beaten everything just to 100% the game, but the only modes I'd consider replaying are the base game and new game+.

If you're interested in randomizers, Astalon has pretty solid Archipelago support in active development. This game is very well-suited to randomization, and the team developing this have added a bunch of options for that as well as some excellent quality of life features to deal with the extensive backtracking that comes whenever you randomize a metroidvania.

Fui jogar sem muitas expectativas, não esperava encontrar um metroidvania tão peculiar, ele mistura elementos antigos, junto de seus gráficos, tem um ar nostálgico, uma dificuldade balanceada, a progressão é meio lenta, então se vc não se forçar a continuar logo no começo pode ser um pouco frustrante, mas depois que vc pega certos itens, o jogo fica um pouco mais cômodo, ainda que tenha muito backtrack, vamos se dizer que é quase que um metroidvania raizão com uma vibe de jogo antigo, antigo mesmo, tipo Castle Excellent do MSX e Nes com toques modernos, pode não agradar todo jogador do gênero, mas me agradou muito, vale a experiência, ainda mais pelo precinho que está em promoção

metroidvania bem ao estilo classico, pros pontos positivos e negativos...
acredito que a parte mais frustante foi o backtrack, sempre recomecando do inicio do castelo, mesmo com os elevadores e teleportes, se torna uma caminhada frustante enquanto tentas descobrir novos caminhos (ou ao menos algum caminho que consiga seguir).
outro incomodo foi quanto as mecanicas, algo bem no estilo dos antigos, voce encontrar local sem saida aparente, marca pra explorar quando tiver um poder diferente que possa ajudar na exploracao (parece que nem existe marcador de mapa, tudo na memoria...), eventualmente morre e passa mais tempo tentando lembrar o caminho de backtrack do inicio do castelo ate o local de interesse (ou local que morreu).

em suma, um bom joguinho pra saudosistas e quem tem um bom tempo pra se dedicar nele (e bastante paciencia...), mas comigo nao deu

Awesome little metroidvaina that looks and feels like a well polished nes game, (althought there are'nt enough buttons on an nes controller for what you would need to play this game) starts out a little slow at first but the more you esplore and uncover the more rewarding the game becomes once you get the bell to switch chracters at any time the game really rolls along. the platforming is decent, boss fights are easy but still fun.

A good metroidvania. Runs fine of ROG Ally. Reminds me of Faxanadu for NES. Difficulty is ok. I like that you can choose to keep boss HP if you fail. I also like it that there are multiple ways to level up your characters. There's a decent number of secret rooms and other treasures to find. Music is decent, listenable chiptunes style music, but nothing too memorable.

So-so for me. It's a retro game like an old NES game and has a lot of the good and bad that those old games had.

I like:
- Art is great. Biomes are varied. A lot of impressive flourishes in many rooms that make me think it's "important" but it's actually just nice art.
- I enjoyed the music.
- Level design is quite varied and non-linear, which I generally find fun (but I sure got lost many times).
- Level design #2: New Game mode has a Remixed version of the main game map and playing NG after the main game is REALLY fun, as it's similar but with very different exploration and item upgrade paths. Bosses are hilariously underpowered but environmental traps and common enemies can still hurt a lot.
- I enjoy the upgrade upon death mechanic to help you as the game progresses.
- Map QoL: early on, you get an upgrade item that shows what rooms have available items, and is not locked to the very late game like many others.

I didn't like:
- Backtracking is so tedious. Rebirth always starts at the literal beginning of the tower, so you have to run quite a lot, depending what fast travel is unlocked and where you need to go. Character speed isn't the fastest, adding to the tedium, and almost every room has a fair amount of platforming.
- The manual save system is an oldie and ends up being barely useful. They're important for the character swap mechanic (more opinions on that below) until it's not. You can't travel or "go back to" a save point, as you end up in the beginning of the tower every time you die.
- Map lack-of-QoL: No legend, warp points have no detail to WHICH one you warp to (there are several sets), NG only: map entrances can lie, no map customizability in any way (e.g. placing custom markers).
- When spending orbs (currency) to buy upgrades upon death, upgrades have literally zero description. "Inner fire", "Lucky draw", "Poise". What the hell do those do and what am I getting for the orbs I'm spending? Try it and hope you don't regret what you bought! (Stuff like this is why pre-Internet game guides were published back in the day.)
- Character swap mechanic is really not fun to deal with in the first section of the game, compounding to the backtracking complaint. It's like that feeling where you go out and see someone and you realize you forgot their birthday gift and have to travel all the way home to pick it up and then go make it back to where you just were. Many other negative reviews harp on the early game simply being much fun at all.
- A side effect of the early game rigid swap mechanic is that I ended up sticking with one character for the vast majority of the game unless I needed the unique ability someone else had. Then I'd swap back, diluting the whole character swap mechanic in the first place.

I have no allegiance to these old retro games (despite growing up in the NES era) and compare it equally to other Metroidvanias I can play today, and this is not one of the ones I will remember with much positivity. But it's not anywhere near an objectively bad game, only a good game with frustrating design decisions. If you can get past the early slog, you may end up enjoying it quite a bit. So I recommend it, but barely.

Love the 3rd generation console aesthetics and music. Challenging enough without being too hard or too easy. Exploring the tower is a lot of fun and the different characters and abilities help to make the experience addicting.

It's a great steam deck game you can play on the couch or on the road trip.

O gênero metroidvania é cheio de jogos e com muitas opções para apetecer á qualquer gosto. Astalon na teoria parece esquisito, você explora um castelo cheio de perigos, com três personagens bem fracos, raramente consegue recuperar a vida e quando morre, volta para o início. Seria a fórmula perfeita para eu odiar o jogo, mas isso não ocorre. O mapa do castelo é tão bem feito, tem tantas passagens secretas, atalhos que só os olhos atentos e curiosos conseguem achar. Os personagens são carismáticos, apesar de simples. A progressão parece lenta, mas ela acompanha muito bem sua aventura dentro deste castelo que rivaliza em complexidade com pináculos do gênero como castlevania symphony of the night, aria of sorrow e bloodstained. Um jogo que vai só crescendo mais e mais dentro de você, ao ponto que mesmo 2 anos após ter jogado ele, penso constantemente e me bate uma saudade de me re-aventurar. Sem contar que depois de terminar libera modos extras e conteúdos no menu. Só espero que um dia tenhamos algo novo desse pequeno estúdio. Top 5 metroidvanias que já joguei, facilmente. Recomendado!

- Entirely too much back tracking (even for a Metroidvania)
If you want to change characters you have to back track
If you die you go all the way to the beginning (not where you saved last)
- Pointless save points
- Die to get upgrades mechanic
- Very Poor Descriptions of Upgrades
- Occationally you would turn a key or activate something, and if you weren't paying really close attention, you wouldn't notice the one thing that changed on the screen

Was going to try continuing even though I wasn't really enjoying myself, but read a few more negative reviews to see that it doesn't ever get any better.

Great exploration metroidvania, tons of missed potential with the story, combat, and worldbuilding.

Play if you love metroidvanias, stay away if you're looking for a fleshed out story. I could rant for ages about how much missed potential this game has, but ill keep it short:

The premise where the heroes respawn at the start of the tower isn't explored at all, you get like 2 cutscenes about it, and gameplay wise, the respawn mechanic doesn't change anything, and might as well not exist at all (this is proven by how the 2 unlockable gamemodes don't need it at all to work). There was so much room to explore a story and game where you are in a metroidvania that keeps resetting from the very beginning each time you die, a true roguelike x metroidvania, OR AT THE VERY LEAST, a heartfelt story where the characters explore the impact of finding out about how many times they've died in the tower, but no, nothing interesting happens.

The combat is also terrible, if you disagree, play bossrush mode, and beat it, then get back to me. I try to 100% complete every game I get, but I couldn't bother with bossrush mode, its so tedius, and is a cold reminder that each boss in the game is meant to be beaten through attrition and stat inflation and not real tactics or skill. There are of course some insane people who might actually no hit the boss rush by spending days practicing, but for normal human beings fights are meant to be won by stat inflation.

Like I said, its a great exploration metroidvania, but despite how full it is with exploration, its a hollow experience in ever other department, which is why I can't with my whole heart recommend this game to the general public.

I recently got a Jester award for this review (no idea if that means this was funny or that they thought this review was trolling but it doesn't matter), and since its been a few weeks I've had some time to mull my thoughts on this game over so I thought I'd be more thorough with my thoughts.

When I started playing, I was instantly enthralled in the story, since I was so curious on how the roguelike aspects would intersect with the metroidvania, story, and combat aspects of the game.

There were key moments that severely disappointed me, and I think sharing them will help you understand my sour feelings about this game.

#1 getting new items: the metroidvania aspect of getting new items is on par with others, but what really got me curious was how the game would handle keeping these items if you died. Considering that canonically the characters don't figure out their in a death loop until near the end of the game, they shouldn't keep any of the items they collect in the tower right? since that would immediately tip them off to exactly whats happening. Well, no. When you die you keep ALL of your items, and not a single character comments on this.

This FUNDAMENTALLY contradicts the death loop aspect of the story, and really made me realize that this story was all front-loaded exposition and had nothing to do with the gameplay.

#2 Respawning at the start of the tower: I loved the idea of a metroidvania but with more stakes. While not easy, it certainly isn't that hard to respawn at a campfire and retry the same section haphazardly. But what if death in the metroidvania meant going back to the very start instead? Now the stakes are way higher, now death means something. Maybe there will be MAJOR hidden passages scattered across the game that reward exploration and creativity. Except, in Astalon, there aren't any. While there are hidden passages scattered across the map, none of them are particularly major. One cool one was at the start in the room right of the first elevator, but that right there introduces the first problem: the elevators.

What in the world is the point of respawning at the start of the tower if the elevators take you straight to wherever you want to go? Practically speaking, this means you get to respawn at about 10 different campfires and travel between them instantly. This is what I meant when I said you could remove the aspect of starting at the entrance of the tower every time you die and nothing would change, since the player already just goes to wherever they want with the elevators.

#3 how lore is given: As I said earlier, lore is given in 3 different ways: the exposition at the start of the game, 3 cutscenes at campfires, and, I kid you not, you BUY the lore for the black knight in epimetheus' shop for a couple of soul orbs. The lore of this game is a joke that only takes itself seriously at the start of the game. The lore is not rewarding at all, and by the end of the game you will, and I mean [b] WILL [/b] be asking yourself "thats it?" since you are expecting so much more story than there actually is in the game.

#4 the bonus characters: this killed the game for me. I mean, actually KILLED the game for me. Spoilers below.
[spoiler] You unlock 2 characters in the MAIN STORY of the game, each are just references to other games, and play no role in the story, getting completely forgotten about the second you unlock them and in the end credits. The first one is unlocked in mechanism, and is clearly meant to be a Super Mario Bros 2 clone of toad, able to pick up blocks at all. The second one is a castlevania clone, which is made obvious by the whip and axe throwing. Not only do these characters spoil the trio-dynamic in the lore, since now they're just... [i] there... [/i] doing nothing but looking pretty while the main characters discuss lore in cutscenes, but they spoil the combat too. Now you aren't just rotating between 3, characters, but 5. Later on you get a bell to rotate between characters at will, and this change from 3 to 5 characters makes the otherwise fast and snappy rotation between characters that you've built through muscle memory become sluggish even when you've become used to it. Once I unlocked these characters, the game immediately stopped being about the dynamic between these 3 characters and immediately made me realize that this game was just a plain old metroidvania advertising itself as something that it isn't, only this time the combat feels awful and there is no story to care about. Negatives first. There is a lot of required backtracking to progress. It gets a little better about 1/3 through the game though. Not much healing in the game and I died a lot to spikes. Tons of ground spikes everywhere. Dying means even more backtracking. The bosses are too easy and with character upgrades they are a joke.

Now the good stuff. The pixel art is fantastic. It reminds me of the NES Mega Man games, but without 'sprite flickering' or 'frame drops'. The chiptune OST is great too. The exploration is fun, although it's hindered a little by the backtracking. Platforming and combat with minion mobs is well done. The characters are well designed, each one unique and fun to play. It's worth playing if you love both Metroidvania's and retro style games.

One of the worst Metroidvanias I have played in a long while. You are constantly looking for keys, everything is locked or behind some skill I don't have, I have looked everywhere and I even made a separate map for every stuck room I have. I can't go anywhere. I was missing a white key and after wandering around for 4 hours looking for one, I was so bored that I couldn't finish the game.
Shame, gameplay is fine. Except for the overly frustrating mechanic that basically makes you backtrack the worst part of the game all over again, fighting the same monsters while trying to find ONE KEY.
Level design was one of the worst I have seen in Metroidvanias so far (and I have played a TON of em).
Making you do everything carefully because of a teleporting monster, random fireball or protruding spikes. It's sooooo slow to backtrack anywhere so wasting the next 20 hours of my life finding that key, I can do something more productive instead.

In the end I cannot recommend this game. I really wanted to like it. Meh.

revised update to the review after game completion:
I went back while watching some series and I finally found a place I could advance through the game.
Yeah, rest of the game went quite easily and I did eventually find 100% of the items and did 100% map
completion.
Worst part of this was I never knew you could scroll down the shop. There wasn't any indication that you could do that.. So I was just buying the basic upgrades during the game for the characters and I never knew there was a DAMN MAP ON SALE or other VEEEERY helpful upgrades.

I still can't recommend this game because of the confusing map layout and the backtracking nightmare.
Oh, and the best upgrades you could find (the morning star/hidden character and blood vessel) you get right before the final boss that could have helped A LOT during the godawful backtracking.

I needed some time to adapt to it, but I ended up liking it. I'd say it's a very good metroidvania, with some spiky bits that almost made me stop playing, actually. Confusing? I'll try to explain myself:

[h2] Cool Stuff [/h2]
+ Progression: This is one of those MVs that, when you find an upgrade (a key item in this case) it actually makes a difference. Exploring the big not-linear dungeon and finding stuff bit by bit ended up being very satisfying, though the way it started was... a bit rough (details later).

+ Exploration: As said, non linear and with lots of stuff to find, shortcuts to unlock and secret rooms to find.

[h2] Not so Cool Stuff [/h2]
- The start of the game, up until the 1st boss. This is one of those MV that (i.m.o.) has its difficulty peak during the first hours, when you haven't had the opportunity to get strong enough. And that peak, for me, reached the frustration side of the red line, up to the point of almost quiting the game.
-- You start from the beginning every time you die. Yes, you can upgrade stuff when you do, but that's IF you picked up any gems. And if you're fast-travelling to the boss and dying again and again, you don't pick any. So I was stuck with which I consider one of the worst 1st bosses in a MV I've played (and I've played A LOT), after exhausting any other path or option to get stronger (aside of grinding, which was totally out of discussion for me, just 1.5 hours in).
-- This 1st boss, I considered horrible for some resons:
--- At this point you have just some hits before you die. You can't heal.
--- You can try the boss with one of three characters, but 2 of them make it way more difficult to beat.
--- Sticky floor, only 2 safe spots to dodge some attacks, which randomly get spikes. The boss is so elusive that a lot of times I couldn't even hit it. The boss randomly spawns bouncing balls that damage you, which happened a lot until the point it was just riddiculous how many there were bouncing around (6?). Each one needs 3 hits to break. It's almost like the boss was designed to be annoying, rather than challenging / fun.
---> Maybe I was just unlucky with the RNG, or tired, or idk. But it was a horrible experience.
-- The main fast travel method is the elevator. To use it you need to find its key. Up until you do, every time you die you'll have to backtrack from the beginning every time. Can get tedious pretty fast.

- The backtrack could have been better. There are some fast travel methods, all of them needing you to be in room A, to get to room B. So you have to get to room A, and that can get tedious. I found myself traversing though the same rooms and traps again and again to explore some zones, featuring some "waiting for the thing that hurts to move" gameplay, which I love a lot. The map is pretty responsible too. Which leads to...

- The map could have been more detailed. In a MV the map is a big part of it, needless to say. When you plan where to go, you want to see which path you can take in the map. Well, it's not really possible here.
-- Some rooms are secret and their connection with their neighbour can not be seen in the map.
-- Some rooms have a wall that divides them so, for example, if the map shows that they have 4 entrances (up, down, left, right) it doesn't mean all of them will be connected.
-- Some teleport points are not shown.
-- Non-return points are not shown.
-- And of course, closed doors that need some ability you may or may not have to open, are not shown.
-- On top of it, you can not put any marks on the map.
--> This meant lots of minutes of meaningless backtrack to dead ends.

- Completism requires too much effort. I like to complete MVs whenever I can, but this one needs so much effort to get from ~95% to 100% completion. This is because the secret rooms. They're cool and all, but the tool you get to find them only works (not always, mind you!) when you're in the neighbour room with a secret entrance. This means that, in order to find the few I left behind, I'd have needed to explore THE WHOLE map again. No thank you.

* As you saw (congrats if you read down to here) this game has awesomeness, if you're kinda picky like me you'll have to get through some rough sh*t to enjoy it up to the end, especially in the first hours. If you're up to it, you'll most probably like it!

Astalon: Tears of the Earth is a metroidvania / action RPG made in the style of 80s Japanese PC games such as Maze of Galious and Tower of Druaga with a bit of influence from classic Castlevania, Doki Doki Panic, and various bits of other games referenced in subtle ways. It is the second project from LABS Works after 2015's Castle of Darkness, and their second outing here is a tad more ambitious, implementing a Lost Vikings-esque party system where you can switch between multiple different characters with different abilities to access different areas as you climb the Gorgon's Tower. This isn't a new favorite of mine, but I must say that I enjoyed a lot of my playthrough even if I had some issues as well.

The game's story centers around Arias, Kyuli, and Algus, a party of three warriors who have come to the Gorgon's Tower in order to stop the flow of poison which is infecting their village's water supply. Having tracked the source to the Tower, they discover very early on that a mysterious and enraged Black Knight seems to be aiding or possibly even causing the poison, and from then on the three make it their mission to stop him and cut off the poison. However, there is a complication to this goal in that the three aren't strong enough to complete this task as is, and to that end, Algus has made a deal with the Titan, Epimetheus, to trade his soul in exchange for the ability for the party to revive and grow stronger by collecting soul orbs. So, while the other two are unaware, death awaits Algus if they complete their goal.

I did enjoy the narrative even if I wish there was more. The main trio of characters were well-realized, though certain details about Kyuli were implied but never brought up again and I question why. Also, there were a couple of optional party members who didn't really do anything in the story and had exactly one optional conversation at the campfire each.

In terms of gameplay, Algus' deal with Epimetheus translates to the Titan being your upgrade shop. Every time you die, he'll give you a menu from which you can upgrade your stats and purchase extra abilities and utilities, and then you'll revive at the entrance to the Tower each time. I bring this up first because this design decision has pretty much determined the design of the entire rest of the game. The name of the game is unlocking shortcuts, fast travel methods, and using each party member to get into areas which require their abilities to progress. Exploration is definitely a lot of fun as a result, and the shortcut method seems to be the key to success in metroidvanias these days as opposed to Castlevania's pretty flat hallway design.

The map design is pretty much the entire lynchpin holding the game together as the combat is nothing special and very, very easy to trivialize. Upgrade Algus enough and he can pretty much destroy enemy and boss design completely till the very end of the game. A lot of metroidvanias are horribly unbalanced, and this is no exception. Honestly not much more to say.

Graphically the game looks excellent. Much like Shovel Knight or The Messenger, it replicates the look of the 80s PC games while having a higher resolution and sprite animation quality than was possible back in the day. The character designs also have a very Dragon Quest-y feel to them and the portraits look very good even if the cutscene art is a little shaky. I also find the boss designs to be very interesting. The Gorgons are supposed to be living statues, and the artist has chosen to portray this as them being moving statues with biological organs and/or organisms inside of them. Between that, and the backstory of the world and antagonist, the tone is surprisingly brutal given the more upbeat attitudes of our protagonists. I don't consider it to be an issue; it's just kind of... odd.

I didn't encounter any major bugs, though I do have negatives. First of all, the elevator key should not exist. I know you can get it pretty early, but needing a key to unlock the elevators on top of finding them just unnecessarily exacerbates the backtracking, especially if someone doesn't find it. Also, it takes way too long to find the item that allows you to switch between party members on the fly. Again, the party-switching mechanic only seems to exist to make you backtrack back to save points. There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to switch between them at any time from the beginning given that, in-context, they're following along with you to every save point anyway. Also, while I like that New Game + seems to remix the map layout, the other two non-boss rush modes seem to play the map layout straight, and one of them seems to have no healing method and no revival system.

So, I do recommend Astalon, but I recommend walking in with tempered expectations. The early part of the game is a bit of a slower build than most metroidvanias, and it only really gets moving later on. Still, once the gears are greased a little, it does become a very fun game with very strong exploration. I'll be looking forward to the dev's next game, Lovish, which looks to be a more direct shoutout to Maze of Galious.

I wanna like this. It's just tedious. With a metroidvania you expect a good amount of back tracking to be a thing. However, that's to find new areas and items. This one has you start from the start of the castle EVERY time you die. There are save points, and you'd expect to start back from those. Nope. Back to the start. It does not consider your time at all. Plus the level up system is just absurd. Each character has it's attack stat to level. I don't know. I don't have time in my life to grind to climb a tower over and over. Just going to move on. shame really. it's got good bones.

Le più grandi pecche di questo metroidvania sono l'impossibilità di annotare la mappa e il fatto che potendo "comprare" upgrades dei personaggi, Si può facilmente arrivare a rendere triviale anche il boss finale.
Se queste due cose non ti dissuadono e ti piacciono i metroidvania Astalon: Tears of the Earth è un ottimo gioco nella sua categoria. Non reinventa l'acqua calda, ma mi ha divertito senza fatica per più di 20 ore.

Damn, that was a stellar Metroidvania to play! It had so much meat on its bones, too! There are entire areas hidden behind bonus playable characters that are hidden as well! It's crazy how much value you're getting in one playthrough AND THERE'S STILL MORE! I unlocked two other modes for the main game and a boss rush mode, too! This is such a cool game! Ten out of ten, no notes! I can't wait to return to this later and see what else is in store with those new modes!

If you like the exploration side of Metroidvanias, this is one not to skip! The bosses aren't much to write home about - I first-tried literally all of them - and you can definitely get overpowered quickly, but the world is so fun to explore that this game will definitely be one I push onto my friends who enjoy the genre! Great game, still safely holds up 4 years after release!

Probably one of the best metrovania games I have played in a long time. It makes me want the developers to make more episodes and develop the lore further for the world. It has a nostalgia feel for the old NES or SNES games of old. It is one of the few games I will take my time and 100% everything to unlock all of the games secrets. Both the developer and publisher should be praised.

游戏的成长要素非常重要不刷级升角色的话性能是有些不够用的至少普通玩家应该少不了这环
每次过一边吧板再回去地图上的所有小怪都会刷新加上之前提到的一些问题和恶魔城特有的满地陷阱
加上死亡回档需要从一开始的地方跑图的体验其实相当糟糕这应该也是大部分差评给出的原因
本人并不是这类游戏的死忠但本作的素质明显不算太低剧情至少开场看来算不上糟糕
画面不错手感不错 ui也算合理开局十多分钟也把角色给立起来了
非要说的话就是相对刺耳的配乐以及前期由于跑图过长导致略显糟糕的地图设计
不介意前期跑图受累的话它不算什么糟糕的游戏 7.5/10

Overall I was disappointed with Astalon. I liked the music and graphics quite a bit, but had quite a few issues that bothered me the whole time.

- Holding down a button skips text. But you have to press a button to advance text. So if you want to actually read the text you have to carefully tap a button without holding it down for too long.

- Way too many of the bosses, mini bosses, and enemies were made trivial by having access to an entire-screen length attack. I would much rather fight enemies that force me to actually engage with their combat mechanics. For example, the centaur mini boss, who you fight about 3 times, is easily defeated by standing as far away as possible and shooting with the archer, while occasionally moving left and right to dodge the one attack that can actually reach you. For another example, the black knight boss, who you also fight about 3 times, is also easily defeated by standing far away, shooting with the archer, and jumping up the side of the screen until they walk away then coming back down. With this approach, the black knight spends the entire fight walking left and right instead of using his awesome attacks.

- I was very disappointed when the campfire dialog started repeating. The first few were very cool and seemed like a great way to learn more about the characters, but then the game just kept re-using the same dialog.

- Gaining 1 max hp, whether from a red crystal in the world or from the death shop, is so underwhelming because the enemies and traps do about 5-10 damage for most of the game. Functionally I get that it's like a piece of heart from a Zelda game - gather 4 or so of these to actually survive another hit from an enemy. But with the damage numbers in this game a single red crystal feels so inconsequential.

- I thought the level design was fine, but all the areas sort of blended together - sure they had different color schemes but they didn't really feel like distinct places. The map grid also just sort of looked like a big blob without distinct shapes to remember the areas by.

It wasn't all bad - I enjoyed this game enough to finish it. But I would not recommend it.

overall a good game lot of content a amazing work from a small team I can only wish one day I could make my game as good as this

tho here's some points I did not liked

- The start is slow and little frustrating; it almost made me quit. Switching characters as a power-up was unnecessary and ruins the pace at the beginning.

- The health regeneration system sucks, though I get why it’s like that — dying is an important plot point, so the developers basically force it.

- The story is interesting, but it’s all over the place, probably trying to tie into the whole universe of the game, leaving a lot of loose ends.

- There’s some bad level design: as soon as you get a gem to open a door, later you get a different gem that forces players to backtrack a lot.

- There’s no way to fast-travel — for example, to the beginning of the map so you can use the elevator — which forces players to just die to save time.

- The grinding at the end for souls was totally unnecessary just to get all the items for achievement.

- The game likes to waste a bit too much of your time, turning what could have been a great game into just an okay one. It’s good, but it could have been much better.

99%地图和道具打通关了，给7.5/10分吧。作为类银游戏，地图设计和拿道具探索，做的不错，挺有乐趣的，其他的，剧情/画面/音乐，就比较一般了。

缺点：
战斗到后来越来越简单，虽然一击干掉任何敌人蛮爽的，但整体没有什么挑战性和操作空间。
收集引导也做得比较弱，后期找东西地图这个绕啊，不支持直接回存档点不知道浪费了多少时间无意义的跑图

Legit one of the best of its kind yet made. Huge, interconnected map, lots to secrets to uncover to get to 100%, several NG+ options, and a story with a surprisingly deep amount of lore. Pulls from several sources, not a paint-by-numbers MetroidVania. Just grab it, go in with as few spoilers as possible and get as lost as you can.

Great metroidvania that has maybe the best diffcultly curve I've ever seen. Items are meaningful, but it's easy to mixed up about where to go. Some people don't like that there's no obvious healing, but dying is not a big deal here. In fact, I used dying as a easy warp to get around.

The story is front and back loaded. That said, the little skits during rests were enough to endear me to the characters. I was fairly happy to put in the extra work to get everything for these goobers.

It's been a whilesince I played a side scroller which feels so rewarding after you finnish certain parts of it and progress through levels, finding secrets and trying to complete everything. A very neetly done metroidvania.

I'll play it again but so far the level/save system in this game is kind of stupid.
In order to level anything up, you need to die.
When you die (no matter how), you have to walk through the entire dungeon again.
Savepoint before a boss, ok nice. You die, you start at the beginning of the dungeon again.
So why are there even savepoints? Why do you need to die before being able to level up and then walk the entire dungeon again?
Waste of time doesn't equal fun, at least to me.

Um dos jogos mais viciantes que eu joguei nesse ano.

O sistema de progressão é absurdamente divertido, as músicas são bem gostosinhas de ouvir e o gameplay te prende muito fácil.

O jogo tem vários upgrades que facilitam muito a jogatina (como trocar de personagem sem precisar ir até as fogueiras) e todos são muito divertidos de jogar.

Se você curte metroidvania, vai sem medo que é jogaço

A história serve mais como um pano de fundo pros acontecimentos. Não chega a ser uma merda, mas também não é nada demais.
