this is one of my favourite games of all time. absolutely phenomenal experience, so intricate, the atmosphere is eerie, unsettling but also incredibly warm it really reminded me of discovering dark souls for the first time. the music, sound design and art direction is a serious work of art, very well-crafted and perfectly fitting. like do you understand how deeply gratifying and fun it is to explore the world completely at random and find a path you hadn't seen before and then you unlock an item and you keep exploring and it turns out that item can open 2 new paths etc. it flows together so seemlessly and you always have somewhere to go and the atmosphere is so damn oppressive and intriguing and the telephone rooms work perfectly as constants to accentuate this alienation with the world. i don't think i have ever played a game which rewards exploration so effortlessly and gratifyingly i cannot recommend this game enough.

[i]On me le conseillait ce jeu depuis des mois et je savais qu’il avait une excellente réputation, mais sa direction artistique en pixel art très particulier ne me donnait pas forcément envie. J'aime énormément le pixel art, mais plutôt dans sa forme classique. Ici, le style est plus étrange, plus sombre, plus expérimental. Le jeu utilise une résolution très basse volontairement proche de celle des anciennes consoles et y ajoute des effets modernes impossibles à l’époque : éclairages dynamiques, particules, transparences, animations procédurales, etc.

Après l’avoir enfin lancé, j’ai pris une vraie claque ! Pas seulement parce que le jeu est bon, mais parce qu’il déborde d’idées. Ça faisait longtemps que je n’avais pas eu cette impression de découvrir quelque chose de vraiment différent qui soit pas un énième Metroidvania recyclé. Encore mieux : alors que je craignais de me sentir bloquée dans des puzzles trop tordus, le jeu m’a au contraire donné l’impression d’être intelligente ![/i]

[h1]Une DA étrange mais fascinante[/h1]
Le créateur Billy Basso explique qu’il voulait exploiter la faible résolution pour pouvoir appliquer des effets graphiques très complexes sur chaque pixel, ce qui donne ce rendu très particulier, à la fois rétro et moderne.

Le premier contact avec Animal Well peut être un peu froid. Le pixel art n’est pas là pour flatter la nostalgie et le jeu ne cherche pas à être “joli” au sens classique du terme. Les couleurs sont souvent sombres, les décors sont remplis de détails étranges, et certaines créatures ressemblent plus à des hallucinations qu’à des ennemis.

Mais plus on avance, plus on comprend que ce choix est totalement volontaire. Le jeu ne veut pas être confortable, il veut créer une ambiance. On explore un endroit mystérieux, presque organique, comme si on se promenait dans un écosystème ancien dont on ne comprend pas encore les règles. Cette direction artistique fonctionne très bien parce qu’elle sert le gameplay. On ne se contente pas de traverser des niveaux, on observe, on s’interroge, on fait attention aux détails. Le monde de Animal Well donne vraiment l’impression d’exister par lui-même et c’est ce qui le rend aussi intriguant.

[h1]Leçon de créativité vidéoludique[/h1]
Sur le papier, le jeu reprend une structure de metroidvania assez classique : une grande carte interconnectée, des zones inaccessibles au début, des objets à récupérer pour progresser. Mais dans les faits, Animal Well joue dans une catégorie complètement à part ! Il n’y a quasiment pas de combat, pas de montée de niveau ni de compétences à améliorer. La progression repose presque uniquement sur la compréhension du monde et sur l’utilisation intelligente des objets. Chaque nouvel outil ne sert pas juste à ouvrir une porte, il peut être utilisé de plusieurs façons, parfois totalement inattendues.

Le jeu explique très peu de choses, Il ne comporte pas de tutoriel envahissant qui vous dise quoi faire. On expérimente, on teste, on se trompe, on recommence et quand on trouve, on a vraiment l’impression que ça vient de nous. Contrairement à beaucoup de jeux de puzzles, on ne se sent jamais puni. Le jeu ne se moque pas du joueur, il lui fait confiance.

[h1]Un level design de génie ![/h1]
Plus on avance dans Animal Well, plus on réalise que le jeu est construit avec une précision incroyable ! Des zones qu’on croyait anecdotiques cachent en réalité des secrets. Des objets qu’on pensait secondaires deviennent essentiels plus tard et certains passages qu’on ne comprenait pas prennent soudain tout leur sens après plusieurs heures.

On sent que le jeu a été pensé dans les moindres détails : Rien ne paraît gratuit ni placé au hasard. Et même quand on pense avoir compris le fonctionnement du jeu, il arrive encore à surprendre avec une nouvelle idée, une nouvelle mécanique, ou un puzzle complètement inattendu ! C’est le genre de design qu’on voit rarement aujourd’hui parce qu’il demande énormément de travail et beaucoup de confiance dans le joueur.

[h1]Gratifiant[/h1]
Ma plus grande crainte en lançant ce titre en Live était de me retrouver bloquée pendant des heures sur des énigmes trop obscures, avec ce sentiment désagréable d’être passée à côté de quelque chose d’évident. Mais le jeu évite (presque) toujours ce problème. Il est exigeant mais reste logique. Quand on ne comprend pas, ce n’est pas parce que la solution est absurde, c’est parce qu’on n’a pas encore vu le bon indice ou qu’on n’a pas encore compris comment utiliser un objet. Quand la solution arrive enfin, la satisfaction est énorme ! Cette sensation d’être plus malin qu’avant (même juste un peu) c’est probablement ce que Animal Well fait de mieux.

[h1]Quelques timings un peu serrés[/h1]
Toutefois s’il fallait pointer un petit défaut, je dirais que certains puzzles reposant sur le timing m’ont paru un peu trop stricts. Le jeu demande parfois d’enchaîner plusieurs actions très rapidement avec une précision quasi pixel perfect nécessitant un peu de perséverance.

Ce n’est jamais catastrophique, mais quelques secondes de plus sur certains passages auraient suffi à rendre les énigmes plus agréables sans les rendre plus faciles. Le jeu est tellement intelligent dans sa conception qu’on aurait aimé qu’il soit un peu plus généreux sur ce point, surtout quand la difficulté ne vient pas de la compréhension du puzzle mais uniquement de la rapidité d’exécution.

Rien de rédhibitoire, loin de là, mais dans un jeu qui donne aussi souvent l’impression de respecter le joueur, ces passages plus exigeants sur le timing peuvent parfois casser légèrement le plaisir de la découverte. Quelques ajustements auraient permis de garder cette sensation de maîtrise sans donner l’impression d’être puni pour une fraction de seconde de trop.

📎 [b][i]Je comprends maintenant pourquoi Animal Well est autant recommandé. Ce n’est pas juste un bon metroidvania, c’est un jeu qui rappelle à quel point le médium peut encore surprendre ! Sa direction artistique ne plaira pas forcément à tout le monde et son approche sans tutoriel peut faire peur. Mais derrière cette apparente étrangeté se cache un jeu d’une inventivité incroyable, construit avec une précision rare et un vrai respect du joueur.[/i][/b]

Great visuals and is an okay Metrovania.
However the more I play Animal Well the more I feel that the game took the aspects of Metrovanias I enjoy the least and went all in on them.

The aspects being the hidden locations that end up being grinding through every corner and wall, whilst staring at the map for long periods of time, having blocked off areas that you are forced to return to when you get the right tool, and getting around the map being a frustrating experience as platforming puzzles are only fun the first few times you do them, not every time you need to get around.

The hidden locations keep making me look immediately at the border of the level, not the content. It also keeps making me open the map, which takes some fun away from the game.
I saw the interview with the creator where he didn't want to hand hold the player into secrets, and I realize this may be another "yellow paint" argument that causes division, but I do think secret entrances should be more visible then they are in this game.
Where will you draw the line between too easy user discovery and wiki/guide binging?

Not having key rebinding is also a large con, and the developer still hasn't added it even though so many reviews have asked for it.

I also don't agree with the pricing. How is this game more expensive than the Hollow Knight games?

I would give this game a 6 out of 10 all things considered.
The fluid dynamics system, the dynamic lighting, the vine / rope physics all look great, but I just don't enjoy the gameplay as much as I like looking at the game visuals.

This is a well done Metroid knock-off, but not much more. The main story was fun, challenging, and kept me engaged. But, it went by quickly and felt like it was only about 5% of the game. I'm normally all for doing all the extras and going for 100% completion, but I just couldn't do it with this game. The world is big, repetitive, and a little maze-like. Backtracking to find eggs and secrets was really fun at first, but wore off and got boring quickly. I found myself with a few unsolved puzzles that were very spread out and a pain to travel between and lost interest. 5/10

"动物井"的优势区间在:
1.作为类银游戏，地图设计为主要参考价值而他在这一方面巅峰造极，地图长度适中，画面唯美，在打完最终boss时一跃而下的演出之后，地图设计之精妙将呼之欲出。
2.与地图设计紧密相关的游戏内容同样打磨出色。在引导，挑战，奖励三方面都有非常出色的构造，其核心的多种道具多种解法在挑战这一特殊方面上有十分强大扩展性 -> 动物井在自由和有趣间做的平衡十分出色。

劣势区间在：
1.作为像素风游戏，本身却充斥着低亮度，高色差，高饱和度画面，且不少路灯或其他物品会发光，与旁边的画面造成极端的视觉反差。在刚进游戏时会可能无法适应十分刺眼。若感到刺眼，需要游玩1-2个小时来适应画面
2.作为类银，平台，解密游戏，有着需要对这三者有一定兴趣的门槛。
3.体量较小，流程游玩时间为5-20小时

总的来说，动物井是一个合约和肉鸽(?)双开花的游戏。日常完全够用甚至超大杯，但由于其较小的体量和不低的门槛有待稍微开发。

El Metroidvania es mi género preferido, pero llegué al punto donde jugué tantos que ya es difícil que me atrapen, generalmente con jugarlos una hora ya me doy cuenta que no me coparán.

Pero el Animal Well... dios, puta madre, qué buen juego. Sin contar el Silksong, hacía un montón que no me atrapaba tanto un título de este género, que estás varias horas jugándolo y perdiendo la noción del tiempo.

Lo denomino un "Metroidvania no lineal" a estos los llamo a aquello que te dan un montón de camino diferentes para tomar sin un orden especifico y hasta pudiendo "romper" el juego porque este te lo permite.
Si tenés ingenio te podés mandar por un montón de lugares.

Además, de que no te dice para donde tenés que ir, es un juego muy mudo del que te vas percatando las cosas, puede que no sea muy amigable para algunos, pero para mí, es la escencia de lo que debe ser un Metroidvania.

También, hacia mucho que no veía items tan ingeniosos y es algo que s eaprecia mucho porque hoy por hoy, es difícil lograr eso.

Lo único de lo que me podría "quejar", es que tiene algunos super secretos que son imposibles de descubrir solo y te tenés que guiar con alguien más. Cosa que yo prefiero poder hacer todo por mi cuenta, pero bueno.

This game is a great puzzle-metroidvania that surprisingly works very well. The pixel art is stunning, the puzzle mechanics and the tools that are given to you in game are pretty creative about how you can use them and solve the puzzles.

This game is so great, it deserves more attention and its as polished and high quality as classic Indie games like Hollow Knight and Undertale. You should definently give it a try!

노멀 엔딩 보고 나서도 한 전체 플탐 12시간까지는 재밌었다.
일단 비주얼 정말 좋고 신비로운 장소를 탐험하는 느낌과 또 비밀들을 서서히 파헤쳐 나간다는 쾌감.
그래서 노말 엔딩을 봤을 때 끝나서 아쉬웠고 진엔딩을 보러 갈 수밖에 없었다.

근데 진엔딩 보는 과정은 영 조금 그랬다.
아래는 진엔딩 보면서 느꼈던 단점들.

[spoiler]고양이 전부 구출한 다음 시라소니 방 진입할 때 팽이쓰면 쉬운데 땅이 뚫린다는 기믹 자체를 이때 당시엔 몰랐어서 아래 가시 천지 방에서 방울 써서 개 힘들게 진입했다. 그런데 알고 봤더니 이쪽 길은 쳇바퀴 얻어서 나가는 출구였다.

그리고 알카노이드 탱탱볼 얻는 장소에 있는 상자 3개 중 가장 아래쪽 상자는 원래 슬링키로 기믹 수행하면서 얻는 상자인데 맵 보니까 위쪽에 구멍 하나 나있길래 숨겨진 장손가 하고 방울타고 올라갔다. 여기 한 칸 단위로 수풀있는 바람에 방울 자꾸 꺼져서 개 힘들게 올라갔다. 근데 알고 봤더니 그냥 그 맵 상자먹고 나가는 출구였다.[/spoiler]

이처럼 아예 못 가게 막아 놓거나 하지 어중간하게 들어갈 수 있게 해놓은 곳이 조금 있었다. 다른 쉬운 길이 있다는 허망감이 크게 느껴져서 좀 짜증났다.

그리고 아이템을 얻고나면 이 아이템으로 뭘 할 수 있는지 정도는 강제로 떠먹여 줬으면 하는데 몇몇은 그냥 주고 끝이다. [spoiler]특히 탱탱볼 사용처는 뭐냐. 이걸 어케 알아. 그래서 이건 공략봤다.[/spoiler]

[spoiler]또 팽이로 뚫리는 블럭이 너무 안 보인다. UV 라이트가 표시해주는 경우도 있는데 아닌 경우도 꽤 있다. 애초에 UV 라이트 자체가 눈 아파 디질 것 같은데 기믹 표시해주는 거 확인하느라 또 하루 종일 키고 다녀야 돼서 정신병 옴. 제작자는 모든 숨겨진 요소 위치를 아니까 UV 라이트를 안 켜도 됐을 거고 참 좋았겠다.[/spoiler]

[spoiler]토끼 퍼즐 몇 개는 컨트롤을 요구하는 것들이 있는데 이건 좋았다. 그래도 게임 내에서 해결이 가능하니까. 근데 ARG를 요구하는 것들도 있어서 결국 걍 조금 풀다가 접었다. 아무리 생각해도 ARG는 좀 그래.[/spoiler]

그래도 이런 것들은 사실 마음을 비우고 공략을 본다면 해결되기 때문에 걍 추천.
진엔딩보고 이 정도 즐겼으면 된 거 아닐까. 나머지 퍼즐들은 유튜브로 볼래~

I really liked this game for the first 15 hours or so but then I found out about some of the deeper more complicated puzzles and it kinda just ruined the whole thing for me if you are fine with not 100% games or are a masochist who loves ARG stuff then its still good. but man. some of those puzzles are just bad. specifically like half of the bunny puzzles are just really bad from a gameplay point of view I didn't want to buy an ARG I wanted to play a cute little metroidvania that would take around 20hs to 100% with me going slow

Очень продуманная метроидвания с многослойными секретами, головоломками и загадками, вы можете пройти игру и сделать ачивки, но при этом не открыв все секреты(довольно сложные).
Игра разрабатывалась 7 лет человеком по имени Билли Бассо, в ней чувствуется индивидуальность и душа.
Таинственный, мистический и недружелюбно-равнодушный мир, населённый странными существами, но наряду с этим чрезвычайно притягательный, манящий в свои дивные сети. Передвигаться по нему можно только наблюдая и исследуя, причём игра награждает и за внимательность и за исследование и за эксперименты.
Способности и предметы, которые ещё нужно найти, можно использовать в разных ситуациях и сочетать между собой. Игра умеет удивлять, без сомнения.

Боевой системы здесь нет, но боссы и враги имеются, бороться с ними придётся куда более хитрыми методами.
Местами, возможно, вы будете чувствовать себя феноменально тупым, а местами - криворуким, но масса удовольствия гарантирована.
Визуально игра невероятно антуражная, эффектная и эстетичная, завораживающие цвета, саунд-дизайн атмосферный, окутывающий. Для тех, кто не любит намеренно крупные пиксели, рекомендуется отодвинуть лицо от монитора чуть дальше, чем обычно.
На мой взгляд, одна из наиболее интересных метроидваний.

I like the part when you reach the well, the Animal Well. Also a freaking donkey made this game, like what the awesome sauce is that? You won't get any of that classic indie spirit from triple A evil like the activate vision, and the Youbesoft. 10/10, would well again.

Animal Well is another excellent puzzle focused metroidvania among a growing list of these games. You can easily tell how much effort and love the dev, Billy Basso, packed into his game. The feeling it evoked in me throughout, upon completion of a puzzle, figuring out new uses for your tools, thinking outside the box, etc. was reminiscent of how I felt playing Fez many years back. Listening to interviews he has done was also enlightening behind the timeline of how Animal Well was created and his thought processes. I really enjoyed just about all parts of the game, it all came together from a cohesive vision. Highly recommend it.

This game was one of the best experiences I've every had the joy of playing.

There are layers upon layers upon layers of puzzles and secrets and game to play, it just keeps going and going.
It has such creative ways of hiding things in plain sight, and gives you such unique tools that you have to experiment to figure out their uses and utilities. Late game had me writing down codes in a notebook (which out of context look like nonsense lol.)

Was so much fun, I recommend it to anyone who enjoys solving puzzles and interesting platforming.

* 道具的關鍵使用方式缺乏教學或暗示，有些「竟然是要這樣用」的用法真的想不出來而卡關卡很久，很挫折
* 部分地圖解謎不知道為什麼解完後的狀態不會持續，後來重回該地點居然需要重跑一輪，有些難跑的讓人很火大
* 場景和動物角色有些可互動有些不行，看起來不行時又可能是真的不行，或只是還不行，或需特定方式互動……不確定是否在白費力氣的感覺很差
* 解謎難度還好但很多很考驗操作技術，即使知道怎麼做也很難做得到，有時一跳錯必須繞一大圈才能回去挑戰很折磨人
* 敵人類型多變，有些只能躲不能打，有些可以打，可以打的又不一定是用什麼打，有些則很難看清楚或很難理解攻擊的判定範圍，令人困惑
* 存檔點經常離死掉的地方很遠導致重新挑戰的成本高，且不會儲存「當下的狀態」，死掉被送回存檔點後原本存檔時的滿血程度或積滿的消耗品都會恢復預設值
* 無劇情，就只是痛苦了一場然後欣賞工作人員名單

整體來說覺得這個遊戲很多不明確性使人無所適從，不適合喜歡規則清楚的人。

Maybe the game isn't for me, but I did finish it after hours of frustration, going back and forth, staring at the map for a glimpse of a hidden detail I might've missed, or making me feel stupid at certain parts of the area just because I don't understand something.

If it's recommended to go in blind, as I have experienced it, I'm not going to collect everything, and I'm not going to find out the "better part" of the game. I'll end up looking up a guide to find every nook and cranny, every detail I missed, to find everything, and that makes it feel like it's cheating and it won't be as rewarding.

So I'm okay with staying in this state, but slightly disappointed in myself for not being able to understand the full meaning/story of the game. But did I enjoy the game? Sure.

I was sceptical at first because there are no combat mechanics, which is usually the most fun aspect in metroidvanias for me - I love me some challenging battles - but Animal doesn't need that. The game design and the puzzles are fantastic and carry the whole thing on their own. Also, I love how unique the tools in this game are. The slink was the most nostalgic for sure. This is a must play for all fans of the genre. Definetely check out the Youtube documentary aswell!

At first glance, Animal Well looks like a simple place. A quiet cave. Pixel art. A few strange animals wandering around. Nothing that screams “this game is going to consume your brain for the next twenty hours.” But the deeper you go into the well, the more you realize something important: this game isn’t just hiding secrets. It’s built entirely around them.

The game starts almost silently. No tutorials, no instructions, not even a proper explanation of the controls. In fact, the control menu itself slowly reveals the buttons only after you press them for the first time. It’s such a small detail, but it perfectly sets the tone. This is a game that refuses to hold your hand. Instead, it nudges you into experimenting, observing, and figuring things out for yourself.

For the first couple of hours, the experience feels relaxed and mysterious. The world is quiet, almost cozy, and surprisingly forgiving. There aren’t many enemies and dying is rare. Most of the time you’re simply wandering through beautifully lit pixel caves, noticing odd structures, strange animal statues, and suspicious little corners that make you think: “That has to be something.”

And very often, it is.

The puzzles in Animal Well are where the game really shines. They rarely present themselves as obvious puzzle rooms with a clear objective. Instead, they emerge naturally from the environment. You might notice a strange behavior from a creature, realize a tool interacts with something in a way you didn’t expect, or suddenly connect two elements that didn’t seem related before. The moment the solution clicks is almost always satisfying because the game rarely spells anything out.

And the tools you collect are a huge part of that magic.

Instead of traditional upgrades like double jumps or stronger attacks, the game gives you gadgets. Weird ones. Each tool seems simple when you first get it, but over time you start discovering secondary uses, little tricks, and interactions you never anticipated. Screens that once felt solved suddenly reveal new possibilities once you understand a tool more deeply. I had a blast constantly realizing, “Wait… this thing can do that?”

The level design supports this beautifully. The map is dense and interconnected, full of shortcuts and hidden passages. Early on you’ll encounter things you clearly can’t reach yet, so you drop a pin on the map and promise yourself you’ll come back later. Hours later, a new tool or insight suddenly makes that path possible. Backtracking becomes exciting because the world keeps recontextualizing itself.

Without spoiling anything major, the game doesn’t stop at its first credit roll. There’s other layers of secrets - The second one (and obvious once you get there) leads to the second ending and it doesn’t require superhuman puzzle solving. It’s still the same exploration-driven gameplay you’ve been enjoying the entire time. With patience and curiosity, most players should be able to reach it on their own.

Only the deepest secrets start to become truly obscure. Yes, there’s more after the second ending as well.

TL;DR; From start to finish, Animal Well is a masterclass in environmental puzzle design. Its level design is fantastic, its progression is wonderfully open, and its tools constantly reward curiosity and creativity. It’s rare to see a game trust the player this much, letting go of hand-holding and simply allowing the world itself to teach you how it works. 10/10.

This was certainly a concept. Playable Mexican jumping bean collecting eggs and spelunking through a labyrinthine well haunted by different animal species. I finished the main storyline and I still don't even know what the story was. I assume there's more to uncover in collecting all the eggs but I feel like the novelty of it has worn off. If there was more of a plotline I'd keep playing. I love mysteries but I also love piecing them together. I feel like Animal Well doesn't really know where it's going.

But, the gameplay was addictive af. I'm easily hooked into puzzle games, with or without combat. And the atmosphere, while very simple, did its job. It felt creepy, mysterious, and even whimsical. Overall, I had fun.
