What a retro jewel! Two people have given their all to create this throwback experience from the 16-bit era.
The team decided to mix an action-platformer with some metroidvania elements with excellent results. The game is engaging but it requires a fair dose of patience because it is not an easy one. This sounds frustrating but thankfully the save points and especially the superb OST really makes you push for one more try.
In addition, one element that surprised me in a positive way is the plot. It is a simple one, don't get me wrong, this is not a masterpiece in writing. However, it keeps things interesting after a certain point in the game.
All in all, it is a must buy game for any retro fans and people interested in hidden gems.

[b]After Death[/b] is an old-style Metroidvania that feels very barebone, almost like a C- college project, very basic and underwhelming, even though it definitely shows love to the 16bit era of console games. If this was a Metroidvania game made back then, when consoles were peak of gaming I'd say it's a pretty solid game, but for something that came out in 2017 considering all the advances in modern gaming, playing this feels very unsatisfying. At it's core the game is not bad, considering I'm giving a positive review, but the gameplay is as simple as it gets, map layout is weird and the writing is borderline questionable.
In overall, true fans of the genre will somewhat appreciate this hidden gem, but for someone that plays Metroidvanias and 2D side-scrollers in general not that often this game will have a very polarized reception.

真EDがあるらしいのですが以下の理由で諦めました。

●隠し部屋に入ってもバリアで奥に行けない所が多く、隠し部屋の入口を見つけて
喜び勇んで入ったら肩透かしを食らう。
そしてそのバリアの解除方法が不明。
●ファストトラベルポイントはそこそこありますが
各隠し部屋のある辺りにはアクセスがすこぶる悪く、巡り回っての探索が面倒。

At first it seems competent, but as you progress further and see every area feels the same and nothing is even remotely exciting, the game feels like a chore. I mean, even if we forgive the movility by taking the game as a tribute to old castlevania games, the writing of "the story" is mediocre at best, the bosses are uninteresting (some even borderline goofy tone breaking jokes), the enemies often are reskings of former enemies. so much so that the only thing that changes seems to be the background and some very similar music.
Then, ss a true metroidvania fan, the first thing i do when i get a new skill is scouring the map for places I could acces with that skill, only to find nothing interesting, or that said skill only gets me to steps further down that path before i need ANOTHER skill i dont yet have... what? is the dev telling me that i have to scour every corner 50 times or that i have to go straight as far as possible before even to swipe the map for secrets... nah...
Im not gonna refund it, it is not THAT bad, but its going into the "when theres nothing else to play" list
O jogo até é interessante, mas não é meu tipo de jogo. Sou apaixonado por jogos metroidvanias mas esse não me chamou muito atenção, ele é feito nos moldes dos jogos mais antigos do gênero.
É bem linear, tem a jogabilidade bem simples e level design muito simples, simples até demais em todos esses quesitos e talvez por isso ele não me tenha chamado a atenção.
Sinto que a exploração dele não é satisfatória o suficiente para continuar jogando, porém se vc curte jogos metroidvania no estilo mais retro e era viciado nos castlevanias clássicos, provavelmente você irá gostar desse também.

Boss fights are a little repetitive, but fun distraction overall
ゆったりした動きの骸骨君を動かして探索するメトロイドヴァニア系のゲーム。
ゆったりというかもっさりの方が近いので、キャラを動かすのが正直あんまり楽しくなくてキビキビアクションを求めている私には合わなかった。
ボスはどれも攻撃パターンが2パターンぐらいしかなく、単調なのでその辺りもマイナスか。
ただストーリーはしっかりしてるし、進めて行くうちにできることが増えるに応じて探索範囲が広がっていくというこのジャンル特有の楽しさはちゃんとあるので探索好きならちゃんと楽しめると思う。
レトロゲーを意識した作りになっているのか、グラフィック設定が初期設定の状態だとかなり視認性が悪いので、【Graphic Options】>【CRT MODE SETUP】>【CRT MODE】はOFFにしておくことを推奨する。
ところでこの手のジャンル共通の話でこのゲームだけの問題ではないのだが、ファストトラベルとセーブポイントが微妙に離れていて面倒な作りになってしまうのは何故なのか。
両方の機能をセットにしても良いと思うのだが。わざわざ分離した上に数画面離れた所に設置する意味が正直よく分からない。
メトロイドヴァニア系のゲーム作る人はこの辺りの作りをなんとかしてほしい。
游戏荒发现的，含泪吃完了这坨（全收集+真结局），只说缺点，如果能接受的话再考虑入手。
1.首先，地图设计的完全就是一坨，需要后期能力才能通过的路居然需要进门走10秒甚至半分钟才能发现这儿现在不能过去，只能像个傻呗一样原路返回，配合上小怪换场景刷新和游戏没有血瓶的机制，让探索和收集都变成纯纯的折磨，玩着十分恶心，并且不止一两处是这样。
2.接上一条地图问题，游戏不支持向上向下看，但偏偏制作组喜欢设计这么多上下的场景，所以要么是下落过程中被小怪花式蹭血，要么是爬升过程中被小怪碰到，然后被硬直教做人带回最底层，恶心。
3.一些能力被拆分给不同boss，需要多次跑图才能收集齐，强行拖慢游戏进度，毫无意义。说的就是你，蜘蛛二段跳。
4.一些设计莫名奇妙，点名批评向左闪避和向右闪避是两个不同的按键。什么反人类设计，就不能设计成方向键控制左右？这很难实现吗？还有变蜘蛛的设计纯纯是为了这张shit地图，除了探路没有任何其他用处。
5.最后，在游戏里把那么多优秀的游戏放在一个场景里做成给玩家的彩蛋，结果是去其精华取其糟粕，端上来这么一坨，完全不像2017年的游戏，怪不得没人玩，活该。

Graficos e ambientação super competente, muito bem desenhadas e detalhadas com inimigos bem legais e locais diversificados também muito detalhados e bem diferentes um do outro. Um maravilhoso metroidvainia [b]PARA INICIANTES[/b] pois é um tanto linear. O mais acostumados podem se divertir muito mas achar meio curto. Jogo médio/facil. Desafios na medida.
Mecnica simples mas muito competente e rapida de "pegar o esquema".
Pontos contra - pouca variedade de inimigos e como nao possui sistema de Level, fica pouco recompensador a exploração.

It's a very old school Metroidvania game, you need some patient to play.

Bien que très classique dans sa formule ce metroid like est une petite perle.
Cependant il souffre tout de même de quelques défauts
par exemple j'ai pris plusieurs fois de dégats sans comprendre d'ou ça venait et en fait c'est l'interface (hud) qui comme elle n'est pas transparente cache les ennemies et leur projectiles.
L'autre principale reproche c'est sur les boss (leurs difficultés est bien dosé dans l'ensemble) par contre sur certains impossible de savoir si on lui a enlevé beaucoup de point de vie ou pas et donc c'est un peu desepérant d'avoir l'impression de d'infligé des dégats sans avoir l'impression que le boss meure ou qu'il a de moins en moins de vie.
Dans les bon points je dirais que la musique bien qu'il n'y en ai pas beaucoup est agréable et accompagne bien tout le jeu, les mécanique de jeu liées au améliorations sont plutôt bien pensé et amenées.
Le style pixel art du jeu est assez agréable a l'oeil.
Si un peu de difficulté ne vous fait pas peur et que vous aimez les metroid like n'hésitez pas le jeu devrait comblé vos attentes.

Although very classic in its formula, this metroid like is a little gem.
However, it does suffer from a few failings
for example, I took damage several times without understanding where it was coming from, and in fact it's the interface (hud) which, because it's not transparent, hides the enemies and their projectiles.
The other main complaint is about the bosses (their difficulty is well balanced overall), but on some it's impossible to know whether they've had a lot of hit points taken away or not, so it's a bit disappointing to have the impression of inflicting damage without having the impression that the boss is dying or has less and less life.
On the good side, although there isn't a lot of music tracks but there are pleasant and a good accompaniment to the whole game, and the game mechanics linked to the upgrades are well thought-out and implemented.
The game's pixel art style is quite pleasing to the eye.
If you're not afraid of a bit of difficulty and you like metroid like games, don't hesitate, the game should meet your expectations.
I enjoyed it. It took me a little bit to adjust to the main punch attack, which has an unusually small and oddly placed hit box compared to typical metroidvanias. But I wasn't having much difficulty after the first 30 minutes or so. The area designs and bosses were interesting and varied, with the focus seeming to be more on exploration than providing difficult bosses (which I prefer and appreciate). Overall, the game has more of a classic style to it.
Oh snap. This is, well what I played of it; a good indie game imo since I like games like Slain, Mahluk,Skelethrone etc

To be honest I was not expecting a good game based on how the character moves but I was wrong, great game, good music and good bosses especially the big ones and, when you realize what is the story about wow, reminds me of old castlevanias and the game has a ver good easter egg at the end, recomended indeed

Beat it in about 6 - 7 hours , the game is quite easy if you take your time to acquire all of the extra health and other boosts.
The graphics are average, the music is above average, the platforming is average, the character moves a bit stiff for my liking, the enemies mostly have above average attack patterns.
Overall the game is very average, I wish that you had a weapon rather then using your fists, it's a bit of a pain to melee enemies who are moving since you move a tad stiffly.
Overall it's a very average metroidvania type of game. I'd only recommend if it drops on sale to below $5.

Sorry, not for me, thoroughly bored, so repetitive.
No good graphics, nor animations, nor nicely done locations, zero story.
After playing amazing Kingdom Shell, the lackings were so stark.
This is definitely a hidden gem. Its one of those games that you play at first questioning, if you want to play then after you play it for a good while. I liked it so much I actually 100% the map. Good game it does not get the credit it deserves.
A nice little SotN-like. Great pixel art, great music. The gameplay is a little weak (like all Sotn-likes) in that you don't really move faster than your Simon Strut, excluding a cooldowned slightly-faster dash that doesn't even have iframes. You really do feel powerful as you gather more items, though, and exploring is rewarded both with powerups you will want for the final boss and a secret :)
Solid 7/10, pick it up during a sale.

Fun throw back Metroidvania. Nothing too flashy or earthshattering but it's competent and has a great pace. Many will probably dislike the back tracking later in the game but it's not as bad as others in the genre.

[b][i]After Death[/i][/b] is a short but entertaining MetroidVania. Its combat can be dated, but the game compensates for this with its energetic pace.

[*]The combat, as said, is very, very simple. You can only attack straight forward; there is neither an upward attack nor a doward attack. It might seem obsolete, but it is fairly easy to adjust to it. And the spells complement it in such a good, dynamic way. Also, you can crouch and attack too.
[*]The bosses are ridiculously easy (the real final boss is the only one that was a challenge), and I didn't have to try more than 4 or 5 times to beat the hardest ones. And enemies in general are effortless to kill, except for 2 or 3.
[*]As I mentioned, the pace is really good; you go very quickly to finish areas, and after you get a new ability, it's pretty good to go back and explore the incomplete spots.
[*]Now, the lack of angency with moving the camera dowards or upwards is... missing; it would be nice to have it.
[*]I love the aesthetics; it reminded me of [b][i]Super Castlevania IV[/i][/b], but more grimdark.
[*]The soundtrack has that retro nostalgic vibe from the 16-bit era; it suits well the atmosphere the game presents. [b](The water section has an amazing track.)[/b]

Fun game
Played on OG 512 steam deck without issues. This game is ok, I pushed on and after a couple of mobility upgrades it gets better. Many say this is like a snes game but it’s actually more like a genesis game, controls a lot like I remember Altered Beast. It’s ok and I would recommend on sale. Glad I played it but stopped to play other newly released games and won’t go back.
After giving this a lot of thought, I can say that this game is a piece of ♥♥♥♥.
I got into it, liked the SNES vibes (couldn't afford one as a kid so this was cool to me), but I was kinda repulsed by the lame character and bargain bin dialog boxes. I was about to process my return when the music and animated backgrounds hit me. WOW; I was pulled in by that, and the boss fights are great too.
Here are the problems: character animation sucks, you're limited to ONE straight punch as your attack unless you spam magic (you can't), and the hit boxes are kinda funky- like, you can't hit them before they hit you. I love 'Blasphemous' and thought this would be a nice new backdrop. But with the stiff and limited controls, I can't possibly recommend it.
Lots of good stuff in here (e.g.: atmosphere), but too much broken gameplay to counteract it.
Its too late to return it, but I'd like to express my disappointment with a game that had so much gothic beauty and potential, just to drop the ball on lazy game design, feel, and general assness. What a waste of a cool idea.
I found this game purely by accident and was pleasantly surprised by it. After Death is a fantastic metroidvania harking back to the classic 2D Castlevania titles from the 16-bit era, even down to the way the main character walks. The game looks and feels like a true Sega Genesis game, the aesthetic is fantastic, the soundtrack is awesome, and the pixel art is gorgeous. In typical metroidvania fashion the player has to traverse a 2D map looking for upgrades and new abilities that unlock more regions of the map. Save rooms and warp rooms allowing fast-travel are scattered through the map making navigation and backtracking easier. The many regions have very distinct designs and color palettes, they are easily recognizable and are a joy to explore, which can't be said of all games in the genre. The game starts quite linear but opens up in the second half once enough special moves have been acquired. Speaking of abilities, the most noteworthy of them are the skills to freeze/unfreeze water, required to solve traversal puzzles involving bodies of water at several points in the game, these are very well done and are never annoying. The controls are tight and responsive and enemies are varied in design and attack patterns providing a decent challenge. I'd say the difficulty is adequate, it's not frustrating but it isn't a cakewalk either. Some bosses, specially the last ones, can be quite difficult and require precision, patience, and memorization of attack patterns. The beginning of the game is harder as the main attack has a short range and most enemies require multiple hits, not to mention some of them are small and hard to hit, but once a few upgrades are acquired it becomes much more manageable and by the end of the game the main character is basically unstoppable. The story is about a nameless skeleton trying to escape from a hellish place full of hostile monsters. The skeleton will meet several lost souls providing clues and insight about how to proceed. It is simple at first but it is deeper than it sounds and it becomes very intriguing as one progresses through the game. It has two endings as far as I know but one of them can be a little cryptic to obtain, in either case both endings are fantastic and wrap up the story beautifully. I can't say enough good things about After Death, I had a blast playing it and loved it from start to finish. Definitely recommended to all metroidvania fans.
Na verdade fiquei dividido em recomendar ou não recomendar, pois o jogo é divertido! Porém o fato de ter que ficar salvando o jogo direto para contornar um bug nos loads entre os estágios que, na maioria das vezes, fecha o jogo quando o bug acontece (sem mencionar que uma vez tive que recomeçar tudo de novo por ter perdido o save do nada!).

El juego parece poco cocinado, las animaciones son muy básicas y el diseño de nivel es bastante terrible, por no nombrar las escasas habilidades a la mínima variedad de enemigos.
No existe recompensa alguna por matar ningún enemigo, no hay monedas, ni objetos, no hay sistema de leveling ni de equipamiento. El avance se basa simplemente en hacer skiping hasta llegar a los boss que nos da algo nuevo para poder avanzar.
Existen mejores metroidvania en el mercado por el mismo precio

All-in-all, worth playing.
A surprisingly enjoyable Metroidvania, and something that feels like the most genuine tribute to Castlevania IV. At first the character movement felt too slow, and artwork felt pretty cheap, but once you get into the groove, the game has a remarkably enjoyable pace. Pretty linear for the first half, but it really opens up in the second. Some of the enemies begin to feel very similar after awhile, and I wouldn't try to 100% without a guide (or even recommend that it's worth it), but definitely a game worth getting on sale, or if you're hard up for a new MV adventure.
Also the music ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ slaps in this game, holy crap.
嘿嘿，有内味儿了啊！16BIT主机内感觉，尤其是世嘉MD啊，我老怀旧了，就喜欢玩复古的像素游戏，但必须得有扫描线，要不然不对味儿啊！！！这游戏还不错，我刚安装上试了一下手就来评论了。

It's similar to Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, but with a skeleton. Great find for Metroidvania enjoyers.
The strongest aspect of After Death is the visual art, but I still recommend it for the gameplay. Just know that it is a bit basic.
Pros: visuals, level design, some of the songs, not too short;
Could be improved: some of the songs don't fit; the map is not very clear about unexplored areas, and it is not possible to leave notes on the map; some difficulty spikes, specially one particular boss; enemy design is a bit lacking and repetitive; the character is a bit too stiff, and a swing attack would be very good; lots of backtracking and walking.
Ótimo jogo para quem gosta do estilo do Metroid clássico. Considerando que foi feito por poucas pessoas, ele até é bem completo. O visual é muito bonito, principalmente o dos chefes (e até que tem um bom tanto deles). O poderzinho de gelo é uma ferramenta bem legal, principalmente para destruir aqueles inimigos chatos que voam em ângulos que você não pode atacar. Há alguns errinhos, como o fato de você poder ficar trancado quando passa na forma de aranha na água congelada, mas nada que diminui a experiência.
If you're a metroidvania addict and you are itching for the numberless games that have been announced but god knows when they will ever come out, this game is a good way to scratch that itch for a little while. Nothing exceptional and a bit short, but except for longevity, it implements well the mechanics of the genre.

this game is absolutely amazing. it kinda reminds me of blasphemous, with how amazing the soundtrack and pixel art is. I haven't finished the game yet, but i've barely been able to leave my room since I started playing it, as it's one of the most immersive games i've come across so far. the only negative things I have to say is that there's no coyote frames, no autosave, and the annoying floating skulls with tusks that are more annoying than primal aspids from hollow knight. this game is criminally underrated.

Um jogão, esse foi um metroidvania que curti muito jogar, foi uma experiência ótima do começo ao fim, suas músicas são sensacionais, e apesar dos inimigos e bosses terem movimentos e ataques simples, seus designs são muito bons, especialmente dos bosses, eu sempre ficava empolgado pra saber como seria o boss antes de entrar na sua sala, sobre a história do jogo eu sinceramente não li quase nenhum diálogo kk, mas no final eu li e fui entendendo, e realmente me surpreendeu, gostei muito do desfecho de tudo. Recomendo!

Mais um metroidvania achado da steam, que me surpreendeu muito. O jogo trouxe uma satisfação em finalizar 100%, não peca em praticamente nada, contém uma grande diversidade de inimigos, trilha sonora maravilhosa ótimas composições, há uma riqueza de detalhes nas fases / stages, muitos coletaveis e muitos muitossssssss "boss fight" poh são 15 boss, alguns chefes são a tela inteira a arena e são chefes bem variados, e um mapa gigante para exploração, contem gráficos 16bits lembrando muitos games do mega drive. Unica coisa que faltou foi um inventario porém sem isso não afeta em nada, e a historia poderia ser mais aprofundada, mas não fugindo da proposta que achei super legal. Sem spoiler "personagem esta internado em risco de vida", Game maravilhoso super recomendo 9/10 <3

I wanted to like this game, but it has so many problems. It looks good and sounds great, but there are many design aspects that I would describe as "amateurish." Hit boxes are all over the place. You move very slowly and you get one of the most anemic dashes in any metroidvania that I've ever played. Enemies are repetitive, and the writing is very awkward.
Even with a sale, this is very meh.

The character moves far too slowly and it brings the game down significantly, you're constantly wading around the map at a snails pace. Getting the double jump helps to add some fluidity, but not enough.
If it weren't for that, mechanically the game is quite good. It feels like a SNES game.
The character gets some ability upgrades along the way which aren't always the overused ones you'd expect, I won't spoil them.
The music is deliciously 80's. Unfortunately, in the first half of the game it has a tendency to get repetitive and even mildly annoying. On the whole though there's so much to like about it, and some tracks manage to fully succeed: The underwater area sounds like it was taken direct from a classic 80's movie.
While the game starts out a little more challenging, It's fairly easy. About half way in it starts to get increasingly easier as you power up the character.
This is a fun 80's feeling SNES metroidvania if you don't mind the slow movement.

[b]Sights & Sounds[/b]
- The game really isn't much to look at. The pixel art is done in an adequate 16-bit style. I don't know why, but it feels more like a Genesis game than an SNES game
- The music follows suit, but it's actually pretty catchy. It doesn't reach the same heights as the best soundtracks from the era it's imitating (Castlevania, Mega Man X, etc.), but I was still pleasantly surprised to find myself with a few of the game's tracks stuck in my head a few days after finishing it
- I loved the boss and miniboss designs, but the regular enemies were a little ho-hum
- You get to be a spooky skeleton, so major bonus points there
[b]Story & Vibes[/b]
- Honestly, there's not much narrative, whether it be overt or hidden. Sure, the game parcels out the plot in the form of little lore drops after every few boss fights or item rooms, but the story can basically be summarized in a single bullet point
- The vibes are similar to that of most other early-90s metroidvanias. You don't really get told what to do. Just go out and explore the map. The pieces will fall into place eventually
- It's campy. Sort of like a playable Spirit Halloween store. I love it
[b]Playability & Replayability[/b]
- It's not that the controls are bad, per se. The jump and attack are both just a little slow. It's easy to adapt to, but it feels pretty uncomfortable initially
- Combat is pretty rudimentary. You eventually pick up a couple spells and a horizontal ranged option that offer some offensive and defensive utility, but that's about it for the seasoning. Bare-bones (ha) combat can be good sometimes, but it's almost too pared down here. There's not even a dodge
- Owing to the lack of a dodge and the floatiness of your jump, avoiding damage can be tricky. Hell, even though your spells can sometimes block projectiles, it's completely unclear if or when it'll work. You're going to want to be pretty aggressive in your general approach if you don't want to die all the time
- The general absence of complexity also bleeds over into the puzzle design. If you can't go somewhere, it's because you're missing an ability and never any other reason
- The simplified gameplay philosophy actually makes the bosses more fun. Each one is armed with a gimmick or two for you to overcome. There's really only one boss fight that's bad, and it's pretty memorably bad (looking at you, underwater lava flowers)
[b]Overall Impressions & Performance[/b]
- In spite of my complaints, this game really scratched an itch. The over-the-top gross-out bosses with their gory fangs and protruding eyeballs are cartoonishly evil in the campiest way possible. It reminds me of all that awesome "horror for kids" stuff that was so popular in the 90s (Gargoyles, Spawn, Goosebumps, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Beetlejuice, etc. The list goes on forever). I'm going to see if I can find Skeleton Warriors on YouTube
- This was an excellent Steam Deck game. It ran perfectly, took up virtually no storage space, and was an excellent match for the controls
[b]Final Verdict[/b]
- [b]8/10[/b]. This is one for those who grew up loving games like Castlevania, Demon's Crest, Splatterhouse, and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. Realistically, it's more in the 6.5-7/10 range, but I like the presentation enough to let my bias show
An interesting metroidvania with a very neat 16-bit graphic style and a fantastic soundtrack (the general atmosphere reminded me of games like [i]Magician Lord[/i]), the mechanics and gameplay are not too original, but it was made by only two people in their spare time so that's not a big problem. Everything works and there are some cool ideas like the power to freeze and unfreeze pools and waterfalls to discover new areas. A nice title overall.

This is a nice experience and I'd definitely recommend it if you're into Metroidvanias. Don't get me wrong, it's a little rough around the edges -- the controls feel a bit clunky, the story pacing is pretty wonky, and it lacks polish overall -- but you can tell the developers have a lot of passion for their project. Overall, it's a solid game that I'd recommend to any fan of the genre.

Pretty good indie Metroidvania with an old-school aesthetic. I wouldn't consider it a must play for the genre, but if you've played the more popular entries and are looking for something new, this one is a good one to play.

This game was a lot better than what I was expecting based on the screenshots. The graphics are pretty simple, but that's also part of the nostalgic appeal. The platforming can be a little imprecise, but that's the only major flaw. You start out a bit on the weak side compared to most games of this genre, but you get a lot stronger as you collect power-ups. The developer's addition of a "health shield" that you can collect if you die 3 times without progress really saves the game and makes it easy enough to get past some of the more difficult areas while still keeping it challenging. The soundtrack is great, it totally fits the style of the game and really elevates the experience. If you love Metroidvania games, this one is totally worth it for the price.

I like the early style snes graphics. It has a great soundtrack as well. The way the combat is simplistic but fun to play at the same time, and the freeze/burn power ups are put to interesting use here. The map design is masterfully done too. They really knocked it out of the park with this game and I hope they continue making metroidvania games!
The devs also just pushed an update today (Oct 31, 2022) that improves the game further and fixed some qol issues too.
this game is awesome! it's a cross between Blasphemous and Hollow Knight but for those who suck at combat - these bosses are sligtly easier to destroy but that doesn't mean the game is easy! It's frustrating at times, it doesn't guide you by hand, it's quite an adventure. It's a classic metroidvania, it has all the elements - portals, upgrades, new abilities etc. The contols are nice and smooth and it doesn't have weird button-combos, which I find helpful. In all it's a solid 8/10. Would reccomend even for the full price.

A decent Metroidvania with a Super Castlevania 4 kind of vibe if you ask me, you play as a mysterious skeleton which will gradually get better abilities after defeating bosses in certain areas around the map, such as obtaining fire and ice spells, as well as being able to turn into a spider skeleton. There are certainly better indie games of this subgenre out there, and the gameplay plus controls are simplistic and stiff, and the same goes for the enemy, music and level design too. Navigating was kind of cryptic sometimes. A few nice bosses to look at, but ability wise from your own character, certainly nothing flashy.
If one of the skeletons from one of the million caves in Skyrim got its own 2d metroidvania game, this would be it. TL;DR FUN!

Первые минут сорок меня жутко бомбило от сложности и топорного управления. Ругал про себя разработчиков за то, что чекпоинтов так мало, да ещё и спрятаны они, и за то, что до босса даже от чекпоинта приходится уныло топать по пустым коридорам. Но потом, знаете ли втянулся, и оторваться было уже тяжело. Стал находить всякие прикольные апгрейды типа ледяной брони, двойного прыжка. К моменту написания отзыва даже в паука теперь могу превращаться. Две дополнительных ячейки здоровья нашёл. Порталов открыл много. И играть стало в разы приятнее. В сюжет, честно говоря, не вникаю вообще, играть и без того интересно. Мне лично напомнило одну старую сеговскую игру Chakan: The Forever Man. Она, правда, в детстве мне казалась до одури сложной, но жутко интересной, и я проходил её с читами, просто ради атмосферы. Только там главный герой был гораздо подвижнее, а здесь он очень медленный и отвратительно прыгает. Но я к этому привык. И поэтому игру действительно могу порекомендовать любителям метроидваний и, наверное, соулс-лайков, так как на Blasphemous игра тоже смахивает. Что ещё добавить? Музыка отвращения не вызывает, восторга тоже. Есть и ладно, вполне аутентичная. Рядовые монстры скучноваты, боссы прекрасны (хотя я пока видел только троих). По ощущениям скоро должен быть финал, но игра говорит, что я прошёл её на 20%, значит, есть впереди ещё и контент и секретные комнаты. Удачи мне.

Я, конечно, понимаю, что в свете нынешней ситуации многие этого не делают принципиально, но на русском языке говорят не только в России, а во многих странах, как бы сложно не было в это поверить на западе. Или они об этом даже не задумываются. С переводом могу даже помочь сам, ибо текста в игре мало.
A hidden gem that hits all the metroidvania checkmarks, and does it well.
Good progression, fun exploration, and well designed bosses (though definitely on the easy side). It's not a novel masterpiece but it scratches the itch and is compelling enough to see it through.
Definitely recommend if you are a fan of the genre or if your are interested in trying it.

Despite the relatively simple ability mechanics and good-enough story presentation, After Death manages to surprise with it's interesting (and many) boss fights, fantastic music and good graphics, considering the style it's going for. 8/10.
To get the comparison to castlevania out of the way: Despite the gothic and undead themes, the game plays more like a melee-metroid than a faithful castlevania game, as there's no equipment system.
The PRO/CON segment:
PROS:
+ Fantastic music.
+ Good graphics (recently improved with the Sigma update).
+ Large world with varied biomes.
+ Evenly spaced teleports, which limits how far you have to back-track.
+ Interesting enemies and great boss fights with ginormous artwork.
+ Simple abilities made more complex through level design and resource management.
CONS (mostly minor):
- Story could be presented better, but it's good enough (no convoluted plot to be found here).
- Level design is messy sometimes, to be expected when playing indie games.
- The lack of the ability to pan the camera up or down may sometimes cause you to get hit by something you can't see (or didn't see in time). I will update this review if it ever gets added.
- The game is not as difficult and fast as other metroidvania games. This might be a good thing, if that's what you're looking for.
Despite the cons I have listed, I had a great time with this game! I finished the game at 94% items in about 7-8 hours.
This was a really good metroidvania. Primarily for the exploration. The combat isn't all that good (not terrible either), but it is still balanced within itself - it has some rather annoying quirks (most are learnt relatively quickly, at least intellectually) and limitations, but it doesn't really try to do something with the combat system that it can't handle so it is all manageable. The map is pretty large, with relatively varied environments. Quite a few unique abilities and the story while I wouldn't set it as a main draw was rather interesting. I would recommend any metroidvania fan to pick this up.

Solid metroidvania that has some jank but has more soul to make up for it, the spooky theme comes together in a way I was not expecting and I gotta say the game can be pretty hard at times (that secret boss was a nutt cracker) but its ultimately very much worth a play.
Music was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ banger, some WADs ought to use it.
Great metroidvania that is dark, similar to the Castlevania games, along with having solid controls and boss fights.
Pretty bland and lackluster MV, wouldn't really recommend it. Level design is all over the place, enemy placement is horrendous and boss fights are boring and tedious. The map lacks details such as exits / unexplored sections making it problematic figuring out what areas you haven't explored yet.
A good Metroidvania with great graphics and music that plays like an old Genesis game. Has some problems like enemies you can't dodge and have to take hits from and the UI blocking you from seeing enemies above you also resulting in taking cheap hits which can get frustrating.
Worth a grab if you like Metroidvanias.

With 2 hours in, here's my take.
For a 5 year old game, it isn't bad at all. Graphics match the intent, which is 16-bit SNES style. The music is decent and works well with the theme of the game; overall sound design is good. Controls are decent; combat is intuitive for the most part. Boss fight design was fun, the two I went up against were average difficulty in respect to the genre.
The overall map layout was oddly jarring though, especially going from the first area to a desert without any real sense of why other than maybe that's just the way this game world is laid out.
I will knock the way enemies are spawned and how they affect your ability to traverse the map in all directions. Going from point A to point B, the enemy spawns made sense, but trying to backtrack (which is a core aspect of Metroid-style games) was not made well and the enemy spawns were often in places making a reverse trip overly tedious or just a bad idea. However, in the 8-bit metroidvania games of old (like on the NES) this was more a limitation of the system; in a modern take on this one would expect adjustments to that so as not to appear as a lazy coding. Still, you can figure it out but it will be tedious.
Also there is a weird latency with the controller, and there were points where the controls did not respond to inputs which resulted in disappointing moments.
Still, I did enjoy the game for what it is and while I won't say this is a top-tier entry into the Metroidvania fold, it is definitely something I would recommend to fans of the genre (even with the above mentioned knocks to the game). I do have a desire to keep playing it myself and see how the story unfolds. I would give it a 7/10 rating. The cost, just based on the scope of the game, is appropriate at $13.99.

疫情管控在家摸鱼，看到了这个游戏。画面和模式都很复古的游戏。没有经验没有货币，只有血量、魔法槽、充能和攻击力提升道具需要寻找。死了读取上个存档位置，除了浪费时间，没有捡魂的负担。小怪除了是跑图过程中的绊脚石，也提供随机回血掉落，控血探索是本游戏的核心。只适合将探索未知作为乐趣的玩家购买。随着能力的解锁，将会频繁使用对应能力和场景要素进行交互，这种深度的耦合性似乎是对银河城类型的最好诠释。
由于经常忘了某些区域需要点什么能力解锁，经常来回跑无用的路。最好的选择就是每打完一个区域boss就朝下一个火焰大致方向探索。但是建议在打图书馆boss前，先获取攻击力升级，这样图书馆这张图会简单很多。之后的流程探索和收集就比较随意了。
这款游戏的操作还可以，不算很生硬，但是有几个问题比较恶心：
1、由于不能像很多横版游戏那样推视角观察四周，所以经常跳起或者下落之后撞到怪，如果这个时候血量不足，那么恭喜你，这段路又白打了。
2、和视角问题类似，一大坨UI占据了正上方的核心区域，对视野有很大干扰。
3、最终boss和真结局boss强行设计成依赖跳砍。

Un excellent Metroidvania avec une ambiance vraiment très prenante et de jolis graphismes.

Avec une difficulté progressive, à ne pas manquer.
It's a hidden gem but one made out of glass.
Movement is very slow with dodge being very usless as it doesn't provide I frames. The attack is worse as its just a straight line infront of your character and there are many flying enemies that will slightly dodge above or under your attack. And once and enemy is inside your hitbox you cant hit them at all.
While the map is very large it is also very empty with a lot of corners and pits that contain nothing and even the few items you find are mostly map updates. It took me after the 3rd boss until I even found a single health upgrade.
And lastly the health system sucks. Any game that thinks its ok to just have enemies randomly spawn health pick ups on death rather than an actual consumable you can use, has it wrong and is worse for it. Because it leads to you dreading the few steps between the fast travel and save room or boss room as each enemy could take out a chunk of hp which you can't get back reliably. And with the starting 2 HP traversing the game became a chore. Map progress is kept on death but if you picked up an upgrade before death you have to go back and get it again regardless.
In the end its ok. Flawed but ok. Movement speed could be higher.
Underrated hidden gem of a Metroidvania.
And if you like 16-bit era soundtracks MY GOD this has amazing sound work.

操作手感不错，说僵硬的怕是没玩过一跳不回头的那些ACT，掌握一些节奏后可以使出类似合金弹头X的站蹲交替闪电刀的操作来
就是主角的移动实在是慢，即使拿到了左右冲刺能力后也没多大改善，何况冲刺还是有缓冲时间的，地图设计倒是很硬核甚至有点阴间，拿到最后的绿魂之后有好几个地方我才知道那隐藏通道和启动机关在哪，之前都是看着地图上有通路但就是找不到入口，配合着主角的移速，来回跑图各种试，实在被恶心到了
战斗难度一般，作为银河城游戏不像月下城那样有练级和刷装备之苦，靠着你的基础和硬实力直接上就行了，BOSS比道中简单，至少血量什么的比我想象中的还少一些，有的BOSS因为地形和自身攻击频率偏慢的关系，被我贪刀直接拼死的都有
总体而言我个人给好评，不强烈推荐的原因就是传动点少了点，主角走太慢跑图麻烦，其他的问题没有

As a skeleton appreciator I loved the design of this game.
Purposefully oldschool metroidvania reminiscing of the consoles and CRT TVs of our childhoods. Enemy variety is low and bosses tend to be a bit too easy but I enjoyed My time with After Death.
优点：纯正类恶魔城银河战士系列，场景丰富，音乐带感，手感硬核
缺点：UI界面垃圾，尽然没有主角能力菜单界面，敌人数量较少，隐藏要素较少。
