Storyline

In Ynglet, you play as a jellyfish-like creature. It lives in a floating bubble with its friends. Unfortunately, a comet crashes into its home and the friends are launched across the world. Now, Ynglet has to travel the world to find its lost friends and help them back home. The story is explained through a short cutscene with no dialog or text. It offers an easy to understand motivation for getting through the levels. Each friend looks and behaves differently, which means there are a lot of fun visuals and interactions possible when trying to help them out of their sticky situations.

Elegant and very smooth gameplay, nice with a controller. I enjoyed the mix of simplicity and dynamic music and texture, it's somehow soothing and thrilling at the same time. Also enjoyed the evolution of the world as you progress, the introduction of simple characters and effects that give you something to invest in besides just finishing a bunch of levels. Un nouveau petit jeu indé, que j’ai fini super vite. En général, je me fis un peu au nombre de succès pour déterminer la durée d’un jeu. Ça ne marche pas toujours, mais là c’est le cas ! Ils ne sont pas spécialement difficile, mais pour certains il faudra une certaine adresse. Il est recommandé de jouer au jeu avec une manette, pour ma part, j’ai utilisé la souris et c’était nickel. J’ai beaucoup de petits jeux indés, donc j’essaie d’avancer des gros jeux tout en réalisant des plus petits à côté. Avatar par exemple, je n’en vois pas la fin pour l’instant, mais je m’éclate dessus quand même.

Le jeu possède différents mode, même si le but est un peu toujours le même, aller d’un point A à un point B. On contrôle une sorte de méduse, qu’il faut faire bouger sur un plan 2D, mais attention, tomber dans le vide nous fait mourir. On réapparait alors sur notre dernier point de sauvegarde, signifié par une forme entourée de rose. Pour faire une nouvelle sauvegarde de niveau, il faut rester dans une forme le temps qu’elle soit entièrement entourée de rose. Parfois, en voulant aller trop vite, on finit par mourir et recommencer une bonne partie d’un niveau. Il n’y a pas vraiment de game over en soi, c’est vraiment avancer à son rythme et ne pas oublier de placer une sauvegarde de temps en temps. Les niveaux ont des durées assez variables, mais globalement, vous le verrez à mon nombre d’heures, c’est vraiment rapide. Ce style de jeu est très sympathique, mais clairement, il ne faut pas que ça dure trop longtemps non plus. Même si je n’aurais pas été contre un mode infini en plus des autres modes déjà existant, juste pour le fun. Pour les modes donc, il y a l’histoire, le bonus, le spécial et le mini-golf. Les trois premiers sont un peu sur le même système, il faut se déplacer, avec parfois quelques petits éléments nouveaux pour évoluer. Sauf qu’il n’y a pas de tutoriel dans ses modes là, donc ce n’est pas toujours évident de comprendre comment s’en servir. Pour le mini-golf, je ne vois pas trop ce qu’il vient faire ici tant ça n’a rien avoir. Mais c’est un ajout plutôt sympathique, j’ai bien aimé ce petit mode bonus, sans prise de tête également. Le seul défaut de ce mode mini-golf, c’est que là, on est sur de la 3D mais avec un point de vue un peu spécial. Ce qui rend assez difficile les mouvements et surtout, l’endroit où l’on va atterrir. C’est à prendre en main surtout et vu que ce n’est qu’un bonus, peu importe qu’il ne soit pas parfait.

Petit point noir pour moi, comme dans Sticky business, il y a parfois des couleurs un peu flashy. Là c’était moins gênant, car exceptionnel et les niveaux ne durent vraiment que quelques petites minutes. Mais je tiens tout de même à le préciser pour ceux que ça pourrait déranger. Le design du jeu n’est pas surchargé, vous pouvez le voir dans les illustrations du jeu que j’ai mis, il n’y a pas beaucoup d’éléments. Après tout, il faut bien que l’on arrive à comprendre où l’on peut aller. Malgré cet aspect léger pour se repérer, il y a toujours des petits éléments décoratifs. Le thème varie de temps en temps, changeant également le thème musical. Thème musical qui est souvent assez discret, mais dans le thème boîte de nuit il gagne un peu en puissance. Le gameplay est simple en soi, si bien que, comme dit en introduction, la souris suffit… J’avoue ne pas comprendre pourquoi la manette est conseillée, je trouve qu’avec la souris c’est déjà ergonomique. Après, ma souris est une souris ergonomique (avec le clic droit et gauche sur le côté et non vers le haut), donc ça joue peut-être. Tout simplement, l’un des clics fait avancer le personnage, le mouvement l’oriente et l’autre clic permet ensuite une certaine téléportation à courte distance, pour aller plus loin. Cette téléportation fige aussi un peu le temps, ce qui permet de viser, tout en élargissant le plan. Je l’ai souvent utilisée pour trouver les étoiles par exemple, sans oublier qu’en ramenant le viseur sur lui, ça annule le lancement et permet de voir où se trouve l’objectif.

Ynglet left me with the lingering thought that asked:

Is this what a more abstract and psychedelic take on Hohokum looks like?

I think the answer is probably yes, but to the game’s merit, this is also something entirely it’s own.

Unique visual style aside, what absolutely needs to be mentioned is the soundtrack. Comprised entirely of chill melodic techno, the music is absolutely superb and I need to remind myself later to download this on my phone for regular consumption. Do yourself a favour and put on your favourite headphones or connect this to your home theatre system, and turn that volume up!

Regarding the actual gameplay:

Mechanically, I’d argue that if this is not truly unique on that front, then it is surely a niche concept that stands out brilliantly. While the controls are simple and straight forward, they deliver exceptional polish that synergizes perfectly with the various challenges presented in each level. This creates a really interesting meta context that develops during the game’s play through, I had a constant stream of reactions that I would describe as laughter, deep sighing, surprise and eureka. That’s quite an emotional rollercoaster to ride, and it’s fairly easy for devs to fall victim to the myriad pitfalls that exist when toying with someone’s brain, Ynglet managed to avoid them all with a level of skill that makes it look easy (it’s not).

There was some initial cognitive dissonance with the environment and control, but by the second stage, the novel concepts on interaction had established a baseline for me, From there, it was muscle memory until the end. I actually don’t think I really had any conscious thought for what button needed to be pressed on my controller from that point on.

Working through each stage, I felt like the developer found the right balance for ramping complexity, I was never left feeling either overwhelmed or bored. I think that’s important to note, because the game also never once explicitly stated to me, the player, how to play. You’re expected to make decisions and infer the objective, strictly on your own, so use your inherently human ability to reason, and put on your critical thinking hat, or whatever.

If I had any complaints to make, it’s that I am left wanting more. The game is relatively short, but not unreasonably so. Which, I suppose means it doesn’t overstay its welcome but I’d definitely be open to more if that were to be an option in the future.

A short, fascinating platformer.

The game has ~6 main levels and ~12 optional levels, which are accessible from the start via "Extra World" and "Special World". The game's big selling point is that platforms aren't solid objects, instead they act like bubbles of water you float/swim through. While you might think this would make the game easy, later levels introduce more mechanics and drastically reduce the number of available platforms, forcing you to work with the game's physics.

Good stuff:
+ For a platformer, it controls surprisingly different than other games in the genre, and requires a different thought process to make it through most levels.
+ You can make your own checkpoints without using any resources, allowing you to customize difficulty mid-level
+ Art style is minimalistic and makes it easy to understand mechanics fairly quickly
+ New mechanics require a little bit of trial and error to figure out, there's no direct explanation given. This keeps with the game's aesthetic, though.
+ There's an entire [spoiler]mini-golf minigame with 18 holes[/spoiler] you can unlock, which feels more fleshed out than I would expect.
+ There's accessibility options

Stuff I'm not fond of:
- Level selection is deliberately obtuse, and when you unlock a new level, it's rarely placed on the map next to the level you just completed. You need to hunt for where you're supposed to go next.
- Progression is strictly linear, you unlock one level at a time. I'm not crazy about searching for levels on a world map.
- The PDF achievement is genuinely ridiculous. Read which keys you need to press during the credits and it will unlock, you don't actually need to go to Copenhagen.

If you're expecting something more look else where. I saw someone with 30+ hrs, and I just don't understand that. Still fun though. Probably better on the steamdeck

Um ser que transita flutuante, entre impulsos e rebatidas, meio bola de pinball, meio ser das águas. É incrível como em um cenário de poucos elementos, delicados, coloridos, abstratos, eu sabia por onde navegar, e porque navegar (como não seguir em frente quando tudo é tão instigante?). Mesmo quando eventualmente me perdia, era uma delícia transitar por esses desenhos e fantasiar jogos de exploração dentro das pinturas abstratas de um Kandinsky, dentro dos traços lúdicos de um Miró. Ynglet instiga o movimento, os devaneios , a tão antiga brincadeira com a gravidade e a fisicalidade. Agora pensando, Ynglet também me lembra de quando eu empinava pipas no gigante céu azul.

这是一款融合了音乐元素的非典型跑酷游戏，简约线条画风，更新到现在内容已经比较丰富了，打折之后入更是物超所值，包含三个世界（剧情、奖励、特殊模式）和两种玩法（默认的“普通玩法”和通关特殊模式后解锁的“消极玩法”），以及一个通关剧情模式后解锁的迷你高尔夫小游戏。关卡难度可以自行调节，轻松难度是真的很轻松。可以作为一款放松心情的小游戏。
那个名为101%的成就：游戏地图据说对应着现实中丹麦哥本哈根的一个地点，[spoiler]文档说，你需要亲自到达丹麦本地并游玩对应关卡才能解锁，但实际上算是一个恶作剧！看了评论才知道解锁方法其实很简单：你只需要在剧情模式全通关，并且在播放结局动画时按住Shift+1，一秒钟你就解锁了这个成就。[/spoiler]
玩家操纵的主体让我想起了浮游生物，所谓的“剧情”给人感觉像是某种原始生物试图恢复自身生存环境的生态圈，但是因为极简风格和无文字介绍，不同的人应该会对此有不同的理解。

This is close to a perfect game.

I went in expecting a flash game with an artsy veneer. In reality, it's incredibly tight, creative, classic gameplay that happens to be unnecessarily beautiful too.

The gameplay continually evolves, but unlike many games, new mechanics do not overstay their welcome and become stale. You have just enough time to come to grips with the previous mechanic before the next one is introduced. It's paced perfectly to create the feeling that you are just barely keeping up. There were many times where I'd die and start to tell myself I don't actually understand what just happened, and less than a second later it'd click and make total sense. If it was paced any faster, the whole thing might fall apart. This game really threads a needle that few others can.

I also appreciated that the level layouts never try to become overly clever or cute. They are intelligent, and force you to think, but the game never sacrifices being a platformer to become a puzzle game.

The art style and sound design are immaculate, reactive and weird.

I actually started to worry about the game going on much longer, because it had been such a tight and well designed experience, and I didn't really see how the mechanics could expand much further without becoming gimmicky. And while thinking this, I realized I had just beaten the game. It ended exactly when it should have. Any longer and it would have detracted from the experience.

If I had to offer one critique it's that the level select screen is a little clunky. It's neat looking, but looking around for the next level didn't add much to the experience.

Someone had a lot of fun making this game and it shows. Highly recommend.

Positives:
- With the outline-heavy graphics and all the beautiful particle effects, it feels like you are playing a piece of art. The dynamically changing sounds/music also add a lot to that feeling.
- The platforming is kept very simple. New mechanics and combinations are added gradually, but everything makes sense immediately without any explanations.
- I really liked the changeable difficulty. The hardest difficulty is perfectly fine, but I switched it around every now and then.

Neutral:
- It took me a while to realize that the level hub is a map of Copenhagen, but it's cool that this is the theme of the game.
- I don't get while so much of the content is in a bland bonus world instead of the main game with the map.

Negatives:
- I had a lot of "off by a few pixels" errors when using the dash. I played with a controller but even then, I had problems with inputting the angle I needed within the short time window (because the character is moving while aiming).

Beautiful, joyful, and over before it runs out of ideas. The escalation of ideas and twists plays out like the Super Mario games when they're firing on all cylinders. I still have the bonus and extra-hard stuff to play through, but it's already one of my favorite games of the year, and this has been a tremendous year for games.

Of Nifflas' games I've only played this and Affordable Space Adventures, but I'm getting the feeling that I'm going to need to run through all of them.

Electroplankton, but with gameplay.
This game has so much going for it. I love its ultra-handdrawn style, like a 3D-2D living sketchbook, where the creatures and objects are made up of those little intricate shapes you drew in the margins of your high school notebooks. They're actively being drawn onto the screen, in a way that makes me think three times about how graphics are displayed in real time. Also the physics tails tickle my ADHD, and I'm not even diagnosed.
The sound design is very reminiscent of Uurnogg, especially in the bonus level that directly uses samples from that game's soundtrack -- both are designed to be adaptive, wherein the player's actions are playing the instruments to make up the music. Genius design.
Oh, yeah, there's gameplay, too. You're sort of a micro-organism, jumping into and out of floating cells. Your body is affected by gravity when outside of the cells, and you get a little blink-dash move that darts you forward instantly. However, the trajectory of the dash is taken into consideration -- you will collect things along the path, and there are certain barriers which either DO or DO NOT interact with the dash. One type reflects your dash trajectory, another lets your free-falling body bounce off it, and both refresh your dash when interacted with. These simple implements can and are arranged to make a variety of challenging courses to navigate, with other gameplay gimmicks sprinkled in. Every stage seems to have something new to experience. Also, there's a robust set of Assist options to make it easy for the sort of people who need that.

Nifflas is a fantastic artist that I've been following since Knytt Stories, or maybe Within a Deep Forest. This piece stands alongside all their other work as something fantastic and well worth experiencing.

As far as 2D platformers go, this is one of the most unique and experimental I've played. Swimming through bubbles, bouncing off different lines, finding all the collectibles in each level, it's all very satisfying. The level design is superb, and gradually ramps up in both difficulty and creativity, with some of the best ideas saved for last.

Ynglet is short and sweet. Even a full completion run will take under a day, yet it remains engaging all throughout. The visuals remind me of the weirder, experimental games often found on the PSP or WiiWare, and the music accompanying each stage add to the atmosphere. I highly recommend it.

super chill fun game! a platformer but with no platforms so it felt really laid back. you can also change the difficulty, gravity, motion assist, etc. to make it as hard or as easy as you want, so it's super replayable. once you have the basic mechanics down from the story world i DEFINITELY recommend the bonus world, it's more fun imo although shorter

Now this. This is a great game. With dynamic music that seems to be at least mostly generated from the player's actions as they go through each level and simplistic but comfortable art style that reminds me of [i]Hue[/i] and completely unique gameplay (at least as far as I know), this is, without a doubt, one of the best games I have ever played. I'm not exactly sure what was going on, but my interpretation was that You are some kind of microscopic "thing" (for want of a better word) hopping between cells to find your friends and their "orb things", with smaller sort of rest levels in between the main larger levels. And, after you've completed the story world, there's a bonus world that adds new mechanics instead of sticking solely to the ones first introduced in the story world, and there's possibly even more content that I just haven't found yet.

Comfy vibes, cool art, neat algorithmically generated music, and good "platforming" to be found (especially after the addition of the bonus levels, but the game was already great before that). Creative design abounds, and the "platforming without platforms" manages to simultaneously be novel and instantly familiar. There is something here for everybody, with a good amount of options for customizing how difficult you want the game to be (ranging from what I would consider very easy to quite challenging, and I have played my fair share of difficult platformers).

On top of all this you are supporting some pretty cool people!

It's cute, the concept is fun, and the music system is cool. The story world is pretty simple and doesn't explore its mechanics in perhaps as much depth as it could, but this is a problem solved by the bonus world which I think concludes the game nicely. I only wish the bonus world had the collectables too.

Not to be confused with fictional species yinglet. This is another one from Nifflas, so you know it's gonna be pretty cool and have amazing music. Visually the game is a shifting soup of colorful microbes. It recommends a controller, but the mouse works great for aiming around your jellyfish-amoeba thing. It doesn't come close to the size of something like (Nifflas' masterpiece) Knytt Underground - the story world is only about an hour and a half long. But the levels have fun mechanics and feel great to play overall.

Story mode is only half the content too: the bonus world is almost as long, it's more challenging, and it introduces several new mechanics into its levels. There are a couple things that give the game more replayability after this, including a "negative mode", multiple difficulty setting, and an addictive unlockable minigame. If you want the biggest challenge Ynglet has to offer though, good luck getting that true 101% completion!

This may be my 2nd favorite Nifflas game after Knytt Underground.

Un classique de Nifflas, qui apporte un vent (une tempête ?) de fraîcheur à la plateforme 2D. Si vous aimez la plateforme 2D, Ynglet est un incontournable.
Les mécaniques sont intelligentes, variées sans être redondantes, et se renouvellent souvent. La difficulté de base est bien calibrée, permettant d’avancer de manière fluide sans pour autant tenir le joueur par la main. Elle peut être changée à tout moment, et après avoir terminé le jeu une première fois, un niveau de difficulté supplémentaire est débloqué, qui demande une réelle maîtrise des mécaniques de jeu.

Le mode « histoire » de base offre une expérience très agréable, et le monde bonus est à mon sens encore plus intéressant, avec de nombreuses nouvelles mécaniques, l’absence de collectables optionnels, et des niveaux qui font preuve d’encore plus d’inventivité.

L’ambiance visuelle et sonore illustre parfaitement la jouabilité.

Fonctionne parfaitement sous Linux et sur le Steam Deck.
