Desyncs are really bad. If a lobby is even half full, at least 1 player will definitely see different pairs of players duelling on their client. And until a desynced player leaves, the whole lobby will be stuck at "waiting for players".
Also, the downtimes are too long. Basically, the waiting time between the rounds is much longer than rounds themselves.
I got this game for $0.79. I really only cared about the character Gale, but I beat the game so fast I still have to do random stuff so I can hit the 2 hour mark and buy her Steam Point Shop sticker.
The game's pretty nice and all, but Gale's all that really matters in the end

My only real complaint is the lack of active players and the dead online scene. Maybe if it went free-to-play more people would jump in. Despite that, I truly think it would shine as a couch multiplayer game with friends - preferably with a few drinks for added chaos.

Well...this has been disappointing.
I expected there to be more content.
There are exactly 9 levels. You can play those 9 levels over and over again, but realistically, this game shouldn't take longer than 20 to 60 minutes to finish front to back, and the replayability is non-existent because this game doesn't have an online community - that is, nobody's hosting any servers to play on.
I guess the art is nice, but there really isn't a point in playing this.
Would it have been too much to ask for an 'endless mode' where one just has to keep defeating waves of enemies? A story mode would have been nice, too.
Alas, what we got was very little, and I don't feel particularly enthused by it.
This concept could have been implemented in a million different ways, rather than just "Here are nine training rounds."
Remember those 2000s demos that would give you like ten to twenty minutes of gameplay to get you hooked and you'd feel awful for being unable to afford the full version after? That's what Western Press feels like.
The problem is...there is no 'full version,' as this is all you get.
This is not worth $4.99. I also don't think this is worth it on sale. This game should be free to play.

A typing and memory game set in the wild west. It is definitively a lot more fun playing against real people and not bots, but sadly there is no one playing it online. But even against bots it is ok for a while.
They should really tone it down with the animations and dialog, there is way too much of that between gameplay.
Works fine on Linux with Proton (Proton 4.2-1).

Western Press is great to play with friends. It's not going to consume hours of your time, but it's well worth the short bursts in which it entertains. It's fun to get in a quick duel with a friend, or a full party tournament in just a few minutes. Struggling to make a decision? Western Press is more fun than flipping a coin, and just as quick these days, unless you're someone who actually has change on hand.
Just be aware that the keyboard vs gamepad matchup is very one sided. For fairness's sake I recommend gamepad vs gamepad unless you require a significant handicap.
If you demand satisfaction, this delivers. Well worth five bucks.

Ну это уже бред получается, когда даже водителям на реагирование даётся секунда. Тут же нужно пронажимать 10 кнопок за 4 секунды, т.е. за секунду нужно успеть нажать хотя бы 3 кнопки. Потому что на пятой секунде тут уже получается труп из игрового персонажа. Так что решайте, хотите ли вы тут ломать игровые пульты и клавиатуры. Кстати, если на игропульте от бокса пробовать играть, то тут помимо игровых кнопок задействуются ещё и стрелки. В общем такое себе удовольствие устраивать дуэли подобным образом.
Русского перевода здесь нет и графика насквозь пиксельная. Но в другом случае было бы очень жёстко видеть убийства игрока и игроком. Враги тут порой используют даже пушки.

One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.

Western Press to gra z gatunku "typing" w klimatach westernu. Gameplay opiera się na pojedynkach 1v1 w jak najszybszym napisaniu słowa, które pojawi się z boku ekranu. Niestety, rozgrywka dość staje się nudna oraz jest stosunkowo krótka, bo w singlu mamy do pokonania jedynie 10 przeciwników. Po ukończeniu gry jest dostępny też inny tryb o nazwie "memory", która wymaga od nas zapamiętania kombinacji liter i jej powtórzenia. Jest też online, ale jak to z takimi grami bywa, nikt w to nie gra.
Podsumowując, na przecenie można wziąć, żeby chwilę się pobawić.

I will say that the implementation of this game is very clean and enjoyable, however the basic premise of the gameplay is not very exciting. I am impressed that they allow for controller OR keyboard given the nature of the game.
I'm giving it a thumbs up since the game does a really good job at what it does, just make sure you understand what the game IS before you buy it. It could provide a group of friends a small amount of entertainment but I sincerely doubt many people play this more than an hour or two. There may have been some random matches online to increase the replayability of this title at release but those days are likely long gone. My guess is that this title is on sale a LOT.

Same as whats been said already multiple times in the reviews. Cool concept thats fun for a bit, but gets old quickly. Online is dead, tourny mode is just boring with only bots since the majority of it is just skipping through and theres only 9 levels to the skill tester [campaign i guess].
Wouldve probably gone up in popularity if it was free. Couldve added micros for characters as an income generator Mabey a leveling system for online.

A fun typing indie game
Western Press is a western-themed command input game, where the fastest who inputs the correct commands shoots first and wins. It's as simple as that.
There is some variation though: you can change the game to be memory based rather than who pushes buttons the fastest, you can choose to play with either keyboard or controllers (both Xbox and Playstation ones) and you have an array of archetypal western movies' characters to choose from, each with their own intro and victory quotes. There's also a workshop where you can download additional characters and stages or publish your own (which requires a bit of tinkering), which can add even more variety. There's a challenge mode, a tournament mode and multiplayer (unfortunately dead), but all of this doesn't change that, at the end of the day, it's always the same gameplay. If a typing/button-pushing challenge doesn't sound fun to you, then this game is not for you. If it does sound like a fun time however, pick it up, because it delivers beyond what is usually expected from these types of games.
Western Press may be a one-trick pony, but for what it is it makes for an enjoyable ride.
PS: I'd say the Engineer would have been a better DLC choice than the Heavy.
I had a time until I did not. Couldn't read the words fast enough to type them out and beat someone on the controller. He sucks. Lost many friends and will forever remember Player 9, They will be sorely missed.

Western Press is a reaction based typing game, where you need to input the correct string of characters or memorize it in order to win a life and death western duel.
The game has an all right idea for a typing game, nothing too serious, but it makes the basic game interesting. The story teller's lines are pretty good, but sadly there is not many of them. You can play the game in online or local multiplayer, easy to get into and host it. The retro graphics are all right in general. You can make and add characters to the game through Steam Workshop, which is pretty nice.
The game mostly has menu navigating, doing duels are short and transitions are long, because of this, the game has not enough content. If you have no friend to play with, the game won't give you much after you done the single player mode. The multiplayer is inhabited in general.
Western Press has a cool idea, but for a game, it's not enough. The devs should have added something more to the product, also the multiplayer has not many players, so your only chance to enjoy the game, is with your friend, however in all honesty, you could find something better to play with your friends. Sadly, I can't recommend to get the game like this, and definitely not for the full price, maybe around for 1,5€.

Cool little party game. Pretty well executed. Nice artstyle. But it needs more solo content badly since the online lobby is empty. In couch coop it would entertain but people will run out of things to do pretty fast. Considering the low price and since I like the artstyle and sound (the announcer is great), I'd give this a thumbs up.

Has some interesting things going on, but it's a one-trick pony, and the pony is on death's door by the time you get to it.
Replayability is a negative number. It takes way too long to get a single round rolling due to the meandering nature of all the unnecessary animations scattered throughout the game, that seem to exist solely to keep you from getting to the part where you actually play. The 'insults' thrown by the characters are obnoxious and never land correctly; they're almost invariably just boiler-plate quips without a single hint of relevance or any dang context at all.
I hate this game more than it deserves, maybe, but it certainly deserves no love.

A humorous western dueling game with an interesting mechanic
Delší dobu jsem zvažovala, zda kliknout palec nahoru či dolů. Hra je celkem originální a vtipná, ale je krátká a relativně rychle omrzí. Pomalé reakce snadno dohoníte neošetřenou pauzou, při které se načtou písmenka potřebná ke spellingu, ale čas neběží.
Nedovedu si představit, jak tato spelimpiáda probíhá na ovladači, na klávesnici pořadí znaků alespoň dává smysl. Dalším úskalím je mrtvý multiplayer, na kterém je i závislý jeden achievement.
Hru jsem vyhrála na stránkách steamgifts.

Wie "Simon says". Der Computer gibt eine Reihe an Tasten / Knöpfen vor die man schnell eintippen muss. Wer schneller ist gewinnt und knallt den Gegner ab.
Wenn man mit Controller spielt, werden die XBox Knöpfe angezeigt, ich hab aber nen Dualshock und kenn die Tastenbelegung von XBox nicht so gut. Darum war das für mich fast unmöglich.
Mit Tastatur fand ichs eindeutig leichter, weil ich da Blind tippen kann.
Nettes Spiel für zwischendurch.

Based on the tepid reviews, I actually tried to trade Western Press (WP) away, but I never found a suitable deal for it. Since the reviews weren't terrible though, I chose to bite the bullet and keep the game. Having earned all the achievements, which required playing 100 matches, I think I can make a good argument for why the game failed in execution.
[h1]Gameplay[/h1]
This game is all about duels to the death. Despite everyone having unique weaponry, it has no impact on how they handle or fight. There's a few changes you can make to the options, but by default, you have to complete ten correct button inputs before your opponent. If you're careless, making mistakes trying to be too quick, the time penalties can lead to the slow, steady opponent coming out on top. Since WP requires lightning quick reflexes and accuracy, it fits the theme of an old-fashioned duel well. One of the bigger chances you can make to the game is to try Memory Mode. In theory, with enough draws, you'd have to memorize 20 inputs in order to win the match. I like the idea for this option, as it'd be a good alternative for people with slower reflexes, but sharp memories.

You can play this game with the keyboard or a controller, although you can also set up a dance mat if you'd want. Who would bother setting that up for a duel that only has ten inputs though? Anyways, something to know is that any input on your controller is fair game for the duel, except for the start and select buttons. It's also possible to disable the shoulder buttons. With the keyboard, it's limited to letters only, so you don't have to worry about numbers or symbols. Additionally, every entry for the keyboard will spell a ten letter word, which is substantially different to the controller. By contrast, the entries on the controller are random mish-mash, not intentional patterns. Per my normal bias, I'd have thought I'd do better on the controller, but my times are much faster with the keyboard since they spell words. Either way, I never noticed any discrepancy between what I entered, and the results. Nor was there any lag or delay.
[h1]Story[/h1]
I'm surprised more wasn't done to develop a story for WP, as there were already unique looking characters that were perfect for this setting. It wouldn't have taken much to develop backstories and motivations for them, and to make the single-player Skill Test into a Story Mode. Why do all of them want to take on Wyatt Hurt: Fame, fortune, revenge, or to be the best? Mechanically, making changes to each character would have amped up the desirability to play as everyone. For those who wouldn't want differences, they could have toggled an option to turn those unique factors off. Perhaps a poorly balanced example would be for the cannon to one-shot anybody, needing to be shot twice by everyone else. However, that character would also need to do more inputs to get their shot off, as it's slower to load.

WP uses dramatic shading and coloring to capture Western themes, making pretty good use out of the pixelated look. Even if cowboys of old never got to appreciate them, the poor savages! I'd say the use of pixels here is as good as you'd find in most indie games. Part of me thinks more could have been done to build upon the Western aesthetic, but I think that would have worked better from solid storytelling, instead of the game's appearance.
[h1]Sound Design[/h1]
What stands out most for me is the music, as the whistling really does make me think of the Wild West. There's a very stereotypical sound from that genre, and it's been captured well here. Nobody would play this game for long periods of time, so it won't wear itself out quickly. I thought the sound effects were well-suited to what was going on, with no obvious annoyances.

🌟 There's a reasonable amount of options and flexibility in the game. Two players can use different control schemes, multiple people can play in a tournament, etc.

❌ Rarely, a duel will end in a dead-on draw, which I think should have led to colliding projectiles and a new round. Additionally, duels won by a whisker should have had more gusto, drawing out the tension as neither side knows quite who came out on top, with a dramatic reveal. Western duels are supposed to have some flair to them, especially when they're close.
❌ Defeating an opponent is kind of exciting in the moment, but it's not rewarded with an awesome death animation. They just fall over.
❌ The ratio of time spent playing the game to setting everything up is abysmal.

🔍 The easiest way to get the 20 input Memory Mode achievement is to play a round against yourself, one on the keyboard, and the other on a controller. To quickly advance through the draws, set the controller so shoulder buttons are invalid, and spam them for rounds with all misses. With the keyboard, just input one incorrect entry. When you reach 20 inputs, make sure you write down the buttons. Then carefully enter them all for an easy achievement.
[h1]Final Thoughts[/h1]
I would recommend this game, were it not for one matter that completely ruins it. With such basic gameplay, minimal dialogue and no cutscenes, it takes an arduous amount of time to get from one duel to the next. I'd expect it to be a swift, streamlined system that would pass by in about the same time as it takes to do a duel or two. However, for every duel you want to have, which is over with in a matter of seconds, it'll take about a minute to start up the next one. Meaning that for all the time I've spent in WP, I've only played for a couple of minutes, in 2-10 second bursts. Having to wait more than a few seconds between rounds chops up the momentum drastically, and there's no legitimate reason for such delays.

Even after 100%'ing the game, I might have held it in my back pocket to play with friends later on. However, after playing against the bots so often, and having to wait for so long, I already know this would only annoy all of us were I to play it with them. Overall, it's really not a bad game, but this issue completely demolishes any positives it has otherwise. What a stupid, fatal flaw.

Why bother giving a preview of the last buttons first... just show them all at once.

Something I decided to play on a whim, Western Press turned out to be a simple enough game to grasp, but like it tends to be the case with such games when there's some degree of manual dexterity involved it just means game pushes it to the extreme. What does that mean? To win these old Western style duels, narrative even frames them as simply being the method through which problems are resolved and everyone's always itching to draw iron for the most minute of matters, you input commands lined up in sequence on your side of the screen and pray your trigger finger is faster than the other dude's. That reaction time is all it boils down to. Seeing as online is pretty much dead I only played through the singleplayer which is brief and has you going up against nine bots with increasing difficulty levels. Worth noting is there's a memory mode which turns the tables by having you memorize commands and then input them. In case you needed a change pace.
Singleplayer offering is clearly there to wet the appetite more than anything, but based on it and it alone I can't really find fault with the game for what it is. Raw pixel graphics could be a major letdown for some if that's important to you, but this is a very distilled package you'll either love or hate. With 30 odd minutes of content without the online component it's not much of an investment.
Western Press is a retro pixel speed typing game. Type the word before your enemy can type his, and you will shoot them (or be shot). That's all there is to the game.
Ugly retro pixel graphics (the game was released in 2016, there's no excuse for pixel graphics, hire an artist if you have no talent yourself) accompany next-to-no meaningful gameplay. There's nothing here that warrants the extreme $7.50 price tag for a typing game. The developers decided to insult PC gamers by having a "fake" graphics settings screen. I'm sure they'll find my thumbs down equally humorous.
It's a charming and fast-paced quick-draw game that blends retro visuals with addictive gameplay. It’s all about reflexes and precision as you race to input button sequences faster than your opponent.
The simple mechanics make it easy to pick up, but mastering it takes skill. The pixel art and quirky characters add a lot of charm, and the multiplayer mode is perfect for fun duels with friends. It’s a light, engaging game that’s great for short sessions or friendly competitions.

I’m truly baffled by all the positive reviews this game has gotten because it sucks so hard. It’s incredibly shallow and thin on content; was bored of it within half an hour. Plus, by the sixth duel the difficulty spiked in ridiculous fashion. The CPU opponent was completing his commands in 2.6 seconds. Seriously, WTF is up with that?
I could go on with the negatives, but I feel I’ve wasted enough of my time on this title. Refund requested.

A simple game with 2 modes (well 3 but...noone is playing multiplayer), where you have to kill your opponent in a western duel :
-Directions and buttons are directly written on your side bar (left or right, depending if you are first or second player)...if you do mistakes you loose point and the one with less mistake, win the game.
-Memorizing :
A centered box with inputs indicates you for few seconds what you have to click on.
If everyone put directions and buttons correctly, the game still goes on, and on...until one make a mistake (or more).
There are also tournaments (8 or 16 players), and you could add real players or AI bots.
Also there is a cool workshop section where you can download characters and backgrounds !

Pretty cool concept, ice art and audio, good difficulty ramp. Nice for a quick challenge. Words/Fonts could be easier to read to make the game more about typing and less about trying to identify words, but this one is better than other typing based games I've tried so far - and for once I can see how it's part of the challenge rather than execution - as the game feels pretty polished overall.
Great game, the only thing I don't like about it is 1. I have trouble finding people to play with and 2. The text being vertically printed on the side of the screen makes it hard and abnormal to read. This causes me to be much slower than if it was horizontal text and easy font to read. Still I totally recommend, teh game because it's fun if you like typing games. I do not think it's a great skill-builder because only 1 word is displayed at a time. It's good for testing out your 1 word bursting speed however.
