FTL meets the grim dark future of the legally distinct millennium.

The game feels good, the inclusion of psychers fits very well. The combination of ships and commanders makes for extra interesting starting points and fun questions on what you can get out of the unique strengths and weaknesses of a ship by putting the "right" captain on it. The old FTL staple of "very high volley plus good shields and evasion" still holds true but magic can mess with that with various crew targeting powers if you're not careful.

It has also been getting fairly consistent post-launch support which is a giant green flag. I wish the devs every success and I'm looking forward to seeing what they add and what their future projects will be.

Never knew that I wanted grimdark FTL until I got it.

Void War is really good. This is like the best chicken noodle soup you've ever had in video game form. Straightforward, simple, oozing with sauce and leaves you with a creeping sense of dread and a want for more.

This game is fantastic.

Yes, the FTL influence is obvious, and the lore has some things in common with WH 40k but with some important differences.

Unlike both FTL and Warhammer 40k, there's no aliens in Void war. This avoids some of the goofy tone of orks or mantis, and as you're not part of the Imperium-equivalent, you're not in the propaganda bubble of 40k space marines.

What remains is a more consistent and grounded grimdark tone to the game which I appreciate.

Like FTL, there is a large variety of ships that support different strategies, but unlike FTL you get to choose a commander (who must survive) to either double down on that strategy or cover the weaknesses that the ship has, as well as all of your crew having equip slots to further the tactical depth.

Normal difficulty is basically the tutorial (and reasonably challenging) but there are 12 more difficult settings than normal which unlock as you beat them (so you beat normal to unlock torment 1, beating torment 1 unlocks torment 2, etc). Starting with torment 1, you get significantly more options in shops which further expands your tactical options.

Also, unlike FTL there are 3 different end bosses which provide variety and minibosses which are both difficult and rewarding.

The biggest negatives I can say is that some commanders without innate boarding abilities are much weaker on ships that don't provide boarding options from the start, and the strategies that are viable for Torment 12 are far narrower than what you can do at lower difficulties where you can reasonably win with any ship/commander combo.

Void War is updated frequently and very much worth your time.

The core gameplay *is* FTL, with nearly identical graphics and iconography, but with a few tweaks which mostly feel like refinements.

But there's also *more* content (new weapons, encounters, ships, etc.) which makes this easier to keep replaying (and as of early 2026 they're still supporting the game with great new content).

If you want FTL but prettier, try Trigon.
If you want FTL but more, get Void War.

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery mediocrity can pay to greatness." This game is a reskin of FTL with some Warhammer40K thrown in. It sounds good as a concept and I really think if the developers put more time into this it could be a great game but for now the game just feels like a soulless clone, like one of the infinite number of game apps that try to reproduce a game that is a best seller in the app store.

I really like it. Setting aside the obvious fact that this is heavily inspired by FTL (Good! FTL is amazing, people should take inspiration from great games.), what makes Void War so great is what distinguishes it from FTL. The crewmember portraits are very cool and well-drawn, the little sprites are cute and easy to identify, the new weapon types, crewmembers, and psyker abilities are a lot of fun and the game has way more win-conditions than FTL. Sure, beam weapons are still extremely powerful, but at least you actually have other options. If you liked FTL, you'll like Void War. So, buy it! Play it! Sacrifice blood and souls for lord Ariok!

P.S. It would be cool if there were more cultist commanders you could play as. There's a Gorgoth-aligned one, but I'd like commanders for Krom and Ariok too.

One of the first games in a long while that I bought for full price, and am very satisfied with. If you like FTL, this is basically FTL in a 40k setting, but with a bit more spit and polish; it is essentially the gameplay loop and system of FTL, but followed through to its logical conclusion in a very unique fashion. The world of Void War is also much more immersive, and interesting than FTL, which is really the part that keeps me coming back. As of now, it's a bit more consistent to win than FTL once you figure out how the game ticks, but I think it is more challenging as a whole than FTL; given a bit of time, I think it will be much more challenging to win consistently on Torrent 12. (The highest difficulty)

This is a hard recommend to anyone who is looking for a game like FTL that goes a step beyond where that game stopped. I bought it for $20 US, but would have actually still paid $30 if it asked knowing what I do now, which is really saying something for me because I am a miser when it comes to Steam games.

You could not fill every square tile of an enemy vessel with undead in FTL, or fill your own vessel with undead and then force-teleport enemy crew into your vessel to be eaten alive in the, now very haunted, engine room.

Many, many years ago i sat down to try this new game called Faster than light. My expectations were guarded. I thought if the game is half as good as i think it could be, it will be one of the best games ever.
Well, it was late in the afternoon when i tried it out and next thing i remember is catching a glimpse of sky outside my window. I wondered why it was so light outside when it must have been around 11 pm already at least.

It was 6 am. I had played through the night.

So yesterday i tried out this new game called Void War. I expected it to be pretty good and well... i had played through the night again.

So YEEEEEEESS! Yes, i recommend it!

It does not have the strong soundtrack like Ben Prunty's but the music is adequate.
The more grim and visceral style will be a turn off for some but the gameplay is so good and polished. I myself prefer the more colorful style of A Strange new galaxy but Void War brings a few new twists and additions of it's own.
Sadly, no Arnold Rimmer but that's probably just as well because Tundra have already run afoul of GWS' ip, what with all the Imperials and power armor and chaos blood magic and whatnot.

Personally, that's a bunch of bs because everything GWS can claim as "ip" is lifted from someone else, not least the likes of Heinlein or Tolkien to name but a few.

Speaking of lifting things, some weapons will be very familiar to Faster than light veterans, as will the entire core concept. That is a good thing. Wish there were more games like this. Not many can so effortlessly pull an all-nighter.

There are as many ships to unlock + a whole new sector map, new and horrible factions, different ways to suffer and lose oxygen.
Some new abilities are pretty powerful, while some concepts from the old game have been tweaked or nerfed. Try to cap enemy ships using melee and you'll find out just how much healing is different. At the same time, you can instantly recall crew back to your ship.
And good 'ole airless ships have turned an even worse shade of horrible.

Please, stop wasting time reading this but thank you very much if you did. Now go play Void War.

i have never felt the need to write a review before but this made laugh so hard with crazy enthusiasm please dont change this, this is such a very specific thing to do id rather get a special text box of the enemy being like "uh can you pull away so we can leave" or a "DOORS STUCK!" "RELEASE ME!!!"

im not joking stalling an enemy who has surrendered in a fire storm would be much harder, a gas event is semi possible early game. ion doesnt do much unless it hits like life sport repeatedly...
but late game?
almost no surrender's, you get fire storms more often and youd have to work for that because they are much more dangerous.

just the idea this is even possible...

means you "could" do a pacifist run and double dip on rewards as much as possible with this.
itd be incredibly hard as is.
however the pure Grim Dark Lunacy of just faking bureaucratic none-sense of pretending your engines wont start till the enemy dies getting an extra reward such specific situations is so funny.

tl;dr
Долгое время думал, что это мне с рандомом не везет и потому каждый полет как предыдущий, но теперь уверен, что в игре просто нет контента + генератор "катки" не доделали.

Из интересного - команду можно одевать в шмотки, увеличивающие хп, дпс, сопротивление удушению, яду. У команды появились активные способности\расходники.
Из раздражающего - команда количественно не ограничена, но разброс по хп может быть и в 10 раз у юнитов. Самых хлипких сдувает в секунды просто.
Следить за этим еще сложнее чем было в ФТЛ. Интерфейс для слежки не завезли. При добавлении условного 7 члена команды игра создает новую вкладку. Чтоб посмотреть, что там по КД активок или по ХП нужно переключаться, но при этом у меня на пол экрана нахер не нужные портреты этой команды.

If you filed the serial numbers off of both FTL and Warhammer 40k and put them in a blender together, you would get Void War. This isn't a complaint, because the resulting product is amazing.

A lot of FTL-likes lose the plot because they decide to distinguish themselves by making things way too complicated. They have fractional numerical damage, or a free-roam galaxy, or they go 3D, or something. Void War knows that you don't need to completely change what works, just improve on it. The changes that it makes to the base formula are mainly things like balance changes, QoL improvements, or just plain 'nice to have's. Its big changes are overhauls to the really simple systems, but they still remain easily understandable because the underlying formula remains the same.

For instance, crew. There's no maximum crew limit. You have a 'commander' character, but they otherwise function like normal crew, just with some unique ability. Crew HP is typically much lower than in FTL, as low as 10-15, capping out around 140 for the really tanky "dude in full power armor" crew members, and averaging 50-60. To balance this, ship weapons usually only do chip damage to crew members unless it's a weapon specifically for injuring crew. This means not every character is good in hand-to-hand combat and some are exceptionally squishy and must be guarded in case of boarders. Crew can also equip items that can change how much damage they do or give them special abilities, but these are all very straightforward and immediately understandable. Crew don't have FTL's skill XP so losing a crew member is less devastating and you can arrange crew more flexibly.

Healing is extremely limited. There is no infinite healing source; it's always a limited number per jumps, or the one item that lets you heal per melee kill. This is an anti-stalling mechanic to prevent a fight from going on forever. You are encouraged to win quickly and decisively, not by attrition.

Some crew can use psionic powers. These are inevitably the squishiest crew members and they can be interrupted while casting. These powers never miss, giving another potential way to avoid a fight stalling forever against an evasive foe.

There are multiple possible final bosses, and you won't know which one it is until you get to the final sector, so you have to have a more general build going than just "here's what I need for the flagship". These are 1 big fight instead of 3 separate ones and they pose a huge challenge.

When you install a system you can pick which room it goes into! I wish FTL let you do this.

It also has better difficulty adjustment than FTL. Instead of just "more scrap" or "less scrap" it has a whole series of gradual increments (think Peglin's crucible levels) to gradually up the challenge in more interesting ways.

Solid recommend for any FTL enjoyers. It's got a demo too if you're undecided!

This really is a worthy heir. That does suggest a transfer of power. If an intern that worked for FTLinc approaches a dev for VoidWax on the street, VW is obligated to buy said FTLintern a choice item from the nearest food truck or sports bar depending on your coolness. As others have said, this is a mashup of 40k + FTL, and I never knew peanut butter + jelly could taste so good. It executes, and does it extremely well.

Note to dev:
- Would like visual distinction for shield levels. At a glance just looking at your ship and seeing you have 1/4 shields as its mostly transparent, but the closer you get to 4/4 the shield effect becomes more transparent

Fun game, like FTL but more to do and more interesting builds.

Lots of ships and commanders to unlock - interesting builds each time and crews you can recruit.

Can do a mass zombie spawn build where you overwhelm the other ships with units, can go a shield tank / weapon build and blast from a distance, can set up an elite crew and board the other ship / wipe out all of the enemies.

Demo is ait slow paced and feels like the game is going to be slow / boring.
Dont let this prevent you from getting into the game its FTL but better.

Perfect spiritual successor to FTL, 10/10

Notable differences:

Okay so first off this isnt legally distinct FTL this IS FTL. It is 1:1 with FTL but with a few additions and minor tweaks, this could be a FTL mod and honestly feels like it is. It is a VERY high quality mod and in a lot of ways feels like a notable step up in terms of mechanics from FTL... But it is still just FTL.

Now FTL is and always will be an absolute timeless masterpiece. Can't really complain about someone copying a masterpiece and I don't think Subset are the type to sue. You could say it's derivative and unimaginative to directly copy another game 1:1, but I'm not a snobby game reviewer so I'm just happy to have more FTL.

As for the other elephant in the room. Yeah it's pretty clearly ripping off 40k but it does it in a unique enough way that I actually find it somewhat interesting. It's about as legally distinct from 40k as D&D is from The Lord of The Rings. Same genera, same tropes, same overall idea, slightly different direction and specifics.

Now one thing is I think the game is a little light on content considering the price tag. FTL is $10 this is $20. You are not getting double the content of FTL your getting the same amount of content as FTL. For $20 I would expect an amount of content on the level of FTL: Multiverse. Maybe not quite that much, 17 pages of ships and the 6 or whatever entirely separate galaxies is a lot, sure, but I would at least like more then base game FTL for the price.

TLDR: This is a high quality 40k themed mod for FTL, and honestly I cant complain. It is just FLT… And I want more FLT, could use a bit more content 7.5/10.

If you think that this game is a dark themed FTL, maybe with a little more variation, you are not completely wrong, BUT very far from it too!
You have more means of aquiring crew, ships can feature more types of systems, crew types are much more varied, ranging from disposable husks to godlike killing machines, crew members can use armor, weapons, tools, psychic abilities. The weapon system makes much more sense (missiles, bombards are different kind of systems). You can buy new and exotic systems and install those in empty rooms.
The lore is interesting, there are a lot of encounter types, mini-missions, better map system, possessed, demonic, autonomous, self-repairing ships.
But don't believe me, go and check out the demo!

TLDR: Similar to FTL but (imo) an improvement in every way. Fun, more player choice in build, well written story and wonderful pixel graphics (check out the crew/captain pictures, they're amazing). Get it on sale or not, if you like it you will get the hours and money's worth out of the game. 9/10 (Runs great on PC & Steam Deck)

I was a big fan of FTL, but always felt like there was something holding me back from enjoying it. Void Crew however, scratches that FTL itch, improving on the formula in every way. Every ship feels viable for a different playstyle, and I've won a game (at this point) with half of them. The captains being separately selectable from the ships allows for more player choice, and powerful combos. My favorite has been the "Belter Build" (referencing The Expanse of course): the 'Roughneck' Captain with the Pugilist ship. Three crew members immune to suffocation, a module for boarding enemy ships, and a gun that creates a vacuum. Let the enemy suffocate while you kill them, lowering their health even faster. This is coming from someone who loathed the ship boarding in FTL, but here I'm having a blast.

Healing is also no longer a given on your ship and an annoyance on the enemy's. It's manually activated, with limited charges, making it a strategic choice for you, and balanced to fight against. Weapon variety feels more meaningful, both with 'weapon' weapons and missiles. You can also switch between three missile types (provided that you have them) so you could take both a ion, hull break, and double damage and swap as needed during a fight. Tools and consumables are great, with some tools directly beneficial to the ship, or even overlapping and giving combat bonuses (like armor, health, or DPS).

One thing that really killed FTL for me was the setup and goal. You're always under threat from the fleet, which if it catches up with you, will kick your ass or drain you of time and resources. Then the final boss was notoriously hard, especially for newer or less experienced players. Not here. There's nothing chasing you and no fuel, but you have to keep moving forward. With that change comes the benefit of planning. Once you move into a sector, you can see where all the repair stations, merchants and points of interest are, as well as the movement paths to get there. Repair stations also have multiple options, which you get to pick one of, so there's always a benefit, even if your ship is fully repaired.

Music is stand out, with a huge tracklist that sells this grimdark world. Almost everything has a description with an in-universe quote, both expanding the lore but also giving useful information. Factions are great, interactions feel much more varied than FTL and you will find yourself weighing your options. Ships can sometimes also carry crates of valuables, which can be snagged by boarding friendly crew (including summoned temporary creatures) or looted for free if the crew is killed off. There's also resonance (permanent unlock currency) which is always earned in game no matter if you win or die that unlocks captains and ships. So if you like a certain build, you can just keep playing it and getting rewards for your progression. Difficulty options exist and are earned unlocks, so if you find it too easy, Void Crew is happy to accommodate you with a much harder playthrough.

I'm gonna stop here, but I'm really in love with this game, and see myself putting in the time to unlock everything There is so much work and love put into this, and it sucks that it's been unfairly attacked by the greedy owners of Warhammer that think they own the very idea of a grimdark space universe. Oh and it runs great on Windows and my Steamdeck, with cloud saves keeping your progress if you swap what system you're playing on. 9/10

I love this game. Love the 40k vibe + FTL vibe. Best part is that's where it starts not where it ends. They recently added base assaults and your commander is much more dynamic and involved in the style of run you build towards. Great stuff that I wish I had more time to play.

It's realtime-with-pause 40k FTL - lots of gnarly fights. It sort of lacks progression - you unlock new ships but these aren't meaningfully different from each other, leaving you at the mercy of RNG for what's in the shops to allow you to craft your run. Still lots of fun.

Rozgrywka bardzo mocno wzięta z gry "SNŚ: Szybciej niż światło", zaś uniwersum z "Wojno-Klepaka 400 setek". Polecam kupić teraz, bo już się zaczęło podejmowanie kroków prawnych przez pewne brytyjskie korpo. Sabes cuando copiabas un trabajo pero le cambiabas algunas palabras para que pareciese que era tuyo, pero en realidad no, era el mismo trabajo que había hecho tu compañero, pues esto pasa, es un FTL al que le han cambiado alguna cosilla, pero es el mismo juego. Básicamente es como tener un DLC del FTL pero sin poder jugarlo en el juego base.
CONCLUSIÓN:
si NO has jugado al FTL, cómpralo ya.
si YA has jugado a FTL, olvídate, sigue buscando.

Cualquiera de las dos opciones FTL o Void War son válidas, pero tener las dos en tu biblioteca no tiene sentido. AUN ASÍ, esto es sólo mi opinión.

Please Games workshop, just give these guys a million dollars for the game or something instead of taking it down. This is straight gas. FTL expanded. Very well done, really like that they went for ground combat too. The Demo of this game is essentially a full game by itself. These devs are pretty generous in the amount of Demo content I would say.

Calling this game "inspired" by FTL feels a bit disingenuous. Marvel Rivals was inspired by Overwatch, which itself was inspired by TF2. League of legends was inspired by Dota. But this game? This game feels more like a modded version of FTL. This IS FTL. There is not nearly enough unique about this game to warrant the asking price.
With that being said my final verdict is that if you haven't played FTL before, buy that game, it's a classic. But if you have played FTL and want more, buy this on sale.
