Virginia is a narrative adventure game with a twist: it is able to tell a complex, emotionally realized story without a single word of dialogue. The presentation is unique for a game in this genre, with a constant (amazing) soundtrack playing as you experience the story's layers of exposition through several jumpcuts across the real and the surreal. If you are like me and enjoy things that keep you dreaming, instead of giving you an excuse to forget the thing after the credits end, then play it. It only needs a couple of hours of your time.

I can sort of see why it got a mixed review. Though I honestly wonder if it has something to do with the fact it has PoC as a protagonist.

Honestly, I liked the experience, although I don't think the story was suited for a dialogue-less game. There were several points where some dialogue would have helped to follow the story. Because most of the characters look alike. I wish it ended earlier, at a point, but then it kept going a bit.

The music was great! The style, while very rudimentary, was distinct enough to make it its own thing. Definitely liked the use of colors here. Very warm and inviting, but also slightly autumnal. You can see Twin Peaks being an influence here (the bar scene definitely showcased that).

不好玩，游戏性为0的作品。把一部烂片切割拆散重组，并不能就此变成好片；把一部平庸的小说，切割碎片化叙述，也不能就此变为神作。无比生硬的转场，故弄玄虚般的碎片化叙事，很显然，制作组已经沉浸在自己的艺术里无法自拔了，但显然，制作组的实力没那么强，无法达到预定的效果，也就音乐很棒了。我可以给到60/100分，因为，在这张试卷中，音乐将是被我无限拉满的“平时分”。但如果想要打造一款注定小众狂欢的“艺术品”，那我也只能向大众“不推荐”了。

Virginia is experiment in both form and storytelling. With frequent cuts and montage, the time moves in such a compelling way. The whole game is like a set of memories, anxieties, uncertainties, past, present and possible futures, like the way things unfold in our mind and dreams. Even though i can't really wrap my mind around what it all meant, I would say the game is very precise in what it wants to achieve and how simply it wants to do it. In the end we can more feel what it's about then really explain it all in details. Virginia's story is about finding a place in this world, somewhere, somehow and with someone. It isn't as intriguing and marvellous as Kentucky Route Zero, but it certainly is good and worth an hour and a half of your time if you like surreal and ambiguous games/movies.

Доволі непогана розповідь, якій більшою мірою допомагає такою бути операторська робота та чудовий музичний супровід.

Абсолютно безглуздий пошук предметів на рівнях, через який ви можете пропустити досягнення, що даються в сюжетних моментах. Помацай предмет в 1 главі, а потім поглянь у потрібну сторону в 26.

Цей проєкт відчувається якоюсь дипломною роботою кількох людей на початку їх кар'єри або показом напрацювань перед інвесторами. Проєкт, який краще дивитись, аніж грати.

I'm mixed on this one. While it is an interesting (barely) walking sim the ending feels incomplete. I enjoyed the Twin Peaks atmosphere and the 2hr time requirement wasn't overlong so for that I recommend it but only if you have a coffee and feel like reading a book without words not if you are seeking an interactive story but an immersive one.

Virginia ist eher ein Visual Novel.
Selbst viele Walking Simulatoren haben mehr Gameplay.

Das Spiel wendet die zuvor bereits aus Thirty Flights Of Loving bekannte Jump-Cut Erzählweise an.
Die Story ist Interpretationssache, es wird kein Wort gesprochen.

Wer etwas erwartet, dass sich mehr "videospielig" anfühlt, der sollte stattdessen zum viel besseren Last Stop vom selben Entwickler greifen, welches an Spiele wie Life Is Strange angelehnt ist.

Сюжет, ДОПУСТИМ, ок - пока я лично "играл" - понял мало, мельком глянул разборы - ну что-то интересное там люди выкопали.
А в остальном это плохо. Даже не про геймплей речь, про само ощущение. Старт с длиннющих титров, который не интересен. Повествование без слов/сабов, которое типа фишка, но сделано через посредственные анимации и полторы статьи. Будто рандомные каты посреди "геймплея", часто без какой-либо подводки. Линч как минимум снимал интересно - тут же ноль. Обычное лоуполи окружение по которому ходить скучно. Музыка хороша, нагоняет драму, но на фоне остального выглядит забавно конечно.

В середине игры пошел биндить W на ПКМ чтоб пройти одной рукой - чудо, оно по дефолту работает. В этом разрабы угадали, да.

Как игра в общем Вирджиния не работает, имхо. Типы мб хотели кино снять, да юнити ковырять дешевле оказалось. При том самый дешевый, наверное, вариант повествования - диалоги, был просто отброшен.

Virginia é um jogo narrativo experimental, mais próximo de um filme surrealista do que de uma história tradicional. Diferente de jogos lineares como Firewatch, ele não usa diálogos, textos ou explicações para guiar o jogador. Tudo é contado por símbolos e cortes bruscos, o que pode gerar forte estranhamento. A trilha sonora e a atmosfera são ótimas, mas a falta de ancoragem narrativa faz muita coisa parecer confusa demais. Jogos como Control usam o surrealismo, mas oferecem ferramentas para interpretação. Aqui, não. Se você espera entender a história enquanto joga, pode sair frustrado. Recomendo apenas para quem já gosta de narrativas abstratas e abertas.

Мої враження від цієї гри, як і її оцінка тут - змішані. Також одразу варто зауважити, що я не поціновувач творчості Девіда Лінча (от Девіда Кроненберга - таааа, але то не сюди), подивився щось перші 2-3 серії Твін Пікса купу років тому, бо далі не подужав, але навіть попри це мені було очевидно, чим надихалися автори. Гру мінусувати хочу (ну, трішки), але це буде не зовсім чесно, тому най вже буде позитивний відгук й трішки розпишу все ж.

Ідея та подача круті, це по суті німе кіно з чудовою оркестровою музикою, герої не розмовляють взагалі, реплік немає, є хіба фонові звуки й загальний сюр. Мгм. Артхаусне німе кіно з чудовим оркестровим саундтреком, от так. Але як би я не любив все вищеозначене, як би не намагався абстрагуватися від тотальної відсутності сюжету та постійної зміни сцен, сумарно гра нічого по собі не лишила. При тому я навіть спробував подивитися чуже проходження в надії, що так сприйматимелься легше, але вийшло ще гірше, тож швидко закинув цю ідею.
Проілюструю піснею одного файного маловідомого гурту, теж роблять усіляки нетривіальні речі, бо тут теж форма панує над змістом якраз.

Для мене в цій грі, попри заморочливі досягнення та постійне тицяння, не було нічого, що б мотивувало продовжувати грати. Я дограв (ну ок, картки ще були, але ж картки то не про гру) все одно, це одне суцільне враження в моменті, сукупність сцен, що працюють лише тут та зараз, але ніяк не бажають триматися купи чи оповідати історію. Такий собі fever dream, тільки з мінімумом сюру й на страшенно банальну тему. Чи радше про все й ні про що водночас.

The story of a disgruntled FBI agent — and an experience I absolutely hated. Every scene ends abruptly, there’s virtually no gameplay, and the ending makes no sense or offers any closure at all. I appreciate experimental storytelling when it works, but this one just felt empty and disjointed.

完全没有游戏性，整体呈现下来的感觉就是莫名其妙不知所云。

引导做的很差，主角移速特别慢，但是鼠标灵敏度又特别高，搭配上云里雾里的剧情有一种喝多了的眩晕感，设置里调整鼠标灵敏度居然只能5%为界调整，每次调整看着画面还得搞一个淡入淡出的特效那叫一个上火。

虽然是艺术游戏但是没什么沉浸感，是不是就得去交互一下，引导由做的不好，让人搞不明白什么时候该去交互，交互哪个物品。

I have a little tradition of giving a point to a game simply by virtue of leaving me speechless or with new musings to dwell over. So there's that. The atmosphere is enthralling, though mostly(if not only, as there are only two front seats in the metaphorical theater this story takes place and the music and art direction take them permanently) because of its riveting score.
Not joking whatsoever, it's comparable to the likes of the ones written by composers such as Ludwig Göransson on films like Oppenheimer(a soundtrack I listen to all the time). That being said, it's also one of the only undisputably great things the game has to show for itself...
You will likely feel confused through most of the plot even if you're paying close attention to the tiny indirectly conveyed signs scattered throughout the disarrayed timeline. I was left so confused that I'm not sure just how much of Virginia is told out of chronological order, there's jumpcuts galore that transport you to other environment, context or point in time entirely without a true bridge among them, à la Bohemian Rhapsody or a YTP.

The way all is told even past the point a potential central mystery is presented(what happened to Lucas?), I'm sorry, is just not interesting enough to justify that confusion and doesn't manage to instill in the player some kind of hunger to pursue the truth and other questions within. The best way to explain is that things are happening around and you are there.

A twist happens and the game seems to only start to tug on your heartstrings past it, as if it had just started, and said twist obviously happens closer to the end. It IS fresh and truly unexpected at least. You feel like a monster. You start to wonder if the ends justify the means when you discover a [barely] understandable motivation to your actions. The Lucas mystery gets sidelined to the point of disappearance(see what I did there).

I think the developers claim the main(and maybe only) inspiration was "Thirty Flights of Loving" because saying it also takes HUGE ambientation and thematic influence in stuff like Twin Peaks(and everything that in turn also takes influence from it like Life is Strange) would be like saying that water is wet. It would also welcome the critique that it seems to not have included the elements that made said works as good as they are.

The late game(post-LSD tab intake) actually reminds me more of Mr. Robot in its last episode. In this very surreal and symbolical section *and only then* the game manages to be a good experience in all fronts. Still confusing, but finally engaging.

In any case the game is not concerned with presenting you with a resolution to what happens to Lucas, at best in a conspiratorial manner(and when you're within a ♥♥♥♥♥♥' LSD trip, muddying the waters further), maybe to illustrate the true other point of the narrative and why I said you will come to feel like a monster. Still, it's bizarre...like playing a mediocre homage to Twin Peaks in which Laura Palmer and her death does not truly matter, doesn't open subplots correctly nor is connected to or the connecting point of the rest of the inquiries happening in tandem that the audience also has.
The game recommends you play it in 30 FPS, I did so you didn't have to. Crank that framerate up to whatever you want and have a less miserable time. Whatever cinematic effect they were trying to accomplish visually to enrich the experience by that recommendation is imperceptible, but the sluggishness of all that moves is all too well perceived, even some lag/stuttering(and it hurts to see, despite the beautiful art direction).
Summing it all up...
I'm glad the game is short and can be completed in a sitting(I forced myself to because I was truly afraid I would NOT have the patience to return to it if I included intervals), otherwise I couldn't in good conscience recommend it to you. Hell, I barely can do that as is!

If you read the creators' note, it says they hope the game is "confounding". This game by far met that criteria. From graphics that made you feel drunk the entire way through to sudden changes in character, situation, & location, this is not a game I could recommend. I pushed through solely to say that I did & I cannot say that I gained anything by it. I don't recommend this game & immediately uninstalled once I exited out. This game was pointless & lacked dialogue as well as plot.

купил я эту игрульку уже давно, но прошел только сейчас. собсна сказать мне о ней нечего- это просто набор каких то рандомных полигональных анимаций по 5-6 минут каждая.
я понимаю что люди которые ищут везде глубокий смысл точно его тут найдут, но он будет ничем не подкреплен, потому что сдесь нет вообще ничего. Какие то птицы, яки, какая то то ли секта, толи че, и собсна выход из этой шизофрении только один, ну ладно два: 1. нужно было добавить больше текста, ведь персонажи не общаются друг с другом, а пара досьешек это ну очень мало для понимания че вообще происходит, хотя бы минимального.
2.сделать игру длиннее, раскидывая больше инфы об окружающем тебя, можно было бы хотя бы помечать, где там гг трипует\спит, а где реальность, потому что пока что игра выглядит как будто у автора был сюжет, но он впал в деменцию и вот че вспомнил то и сделал.

честно не помню за сколько я ее брал, но если она будет стоить рублей 50 то норм, фулпрайса это детище не стоит, а очень жаль, ведь задел неплохой

Бред сивого Линча. Бессмысленный и бессвязный. Все как у почившего метеоролога, которому так страстно кланяется. Неудивительно, что игра (игра?) отхватила премию BAFTA. Любителей подобного добра среди высоколобых снобов всегда хватало.

Музыка — вот то единственное лекарство, что спасало меня от нескончаемого потока бреда и заставило дотерпеть до финальных титров. Безоговорочная победа настоящего искусства над его нелепыми подражателями.

Virginia started off really promising. At first I thought it might be something like Life is Strange, where you could explore a city and get into a story. But it turns out there is absolutely no dialogue and no real way to get immersed.

You just move from one tiny scene to another. One moment you are in a hallway, then suddenly you are somewhere completely different, with no explanation. Sometimes you only walk down a corridor, click on one object, and then you are in the next scene. It doesn’t even feel like an interactive movie, more like a slideshow with walking in between.

The controls are also clunky. The mouse feels heavy and sluggish, which makes the whole experience even more frustrating.

It’s very disappointing, especially because the game seemed so interesting at first. For me, this was an obvious misbuy. I can’t recommend it at all.

A visually nice, well-acted silent movie. And I mean silent - there’s absolutely no clarity. All the “gameplay” is basically 30 seconds of searching for an interactive object and pressing a button to see… see what? I have no idea, maybe “something”! You just walk around, press a button, watch the action play out, and then move to the next spot to do it all over again. That’s literally the whole game. You can’t even call it an interactive movie, and it’s not really a walking simulator either… so what do you even call it?

With no dialogue, no discernible emotion, and a story that veers off the rails from the get-go, Virginia poses a tough experience to get behind. It has a beautiful art style and incredible score, but when the art inhibits characters' expressions from coming through fully, you're presented with meaningless interactions throughout the game. The score is beautiful and haunting at times, but this is really all Virginia has going for it.

Now, supplement that with an interaction system that has you picking up items without much clarity as to what it is and why you'd need it, and a narrative that just doesn't make much sense. The story isn't about the missing boy, it's about everything else. Sadly enough, I had to go to Wikipedia to read the plot of the game because it was that unclear - or maybe I'm just a massive idiot.

I really wanted to like Virginia, but I genuinely found myself wondering what the actual f*ck I was doing the entire time. And, it didn't help that I would fall asleep playing it.

Игра без геймплея как такового: сцены сменяются лёгким нахождением случайного предмета и кликанием на него. Выбора никакого нет. Совершенно линейное прохождение, как будто смотришь фильм и изредка отвлекаешься от него, нажимая на паузу.

Игра без глубокомысленного или эмоционального сюжета. Основа сюжета дружба (или любовь?) двух темнокожих напарниц, борющихся с белыми мужчинами в начальстве. Все остальные параллельные сюжетики не раскрываются и остаются на фоне, как нечто второстепенное.

Единственное, что интересно: сюжет про расследования ФБР передаётся практически без слов, персонажи не говорят, а если даже и говорят, то их не слышно, и субтитры к их потенциальным репликам отсутствуют.

Если уж берём леволиберальную, ЛГБТ+ игру с наркоманскими сценами -- то гораздо грамотнее соткана If found... Там и персонажи живые и эмоции их передаются во время игры. Но там придётся много читать. Здесь же не на чем даже остановить своё внимание.

Es un juego que pueda gustar, más o menos, pero si es diferente, hasta me parece valiente. Tiene varias pegas, no apuesta mucho al querer interactuar con lo que tenemos alrededor, extremadamente básico para mi gusto, básicamente solo se puede interactuar con lo que mueva la trama y poco más. Mientras lo jugaba no dejaba de sentir que, por momentos, estaba en una película de Lynch.

Es interesante, es cortito por lo que viene bien para pasar la tarde, y la historia es medio extraña, sobre todo en los últimos treinta minutos donde apuesta a dejar todo a visión del jugador. Punto aparte para la épica banda sonora que me encantó de principio a fin y que un poco me molesta que no la encuentre en alguna app de streaming de audio para escucharla en loop.

梦境又如何？梦也是思维的一部分，折射的东西也许虚幻但并非无迹可寻。有时在梦里，人反而会看到一个自己也不了解的自己。在那里，有我们最深切的的渴望、恐惧与其他。人类，真是不坦诚又别扭的生物呢，既难以了解别人，又说不上了解自身。

创作者说，创作本作称得上是一次错综复杂的奇特经历，最终他们也希望它能成为一款扑朔迷离的奇妙游戏。我想，他们实际上已经做到了吧。推荐给喜欢这种风格游戏的朋友，一千个人有一千个哈姆雷特，看懂了什么，最终只取决于观众，而非作者。

Une mise en scène assurément intéressante et une direction artistique soignée. Mais le gameplay extrêmement limité m'a vite découragé... on doit avancer pendant quelques secondes, chercher (parfois péniblement) le seul objet avec lequel interagir et c'est tout.

Я очень люблю эту игру, да она странная, сюжет мудрённый как кажется. Я играл в неё ещё до покупки в стим, вот недавно вспомнил старое и купил. Удивился что у неё смешанные отзывы, с другой стороны оно понятно. Игра необычно, не имеет диалогов, только музыка, звуки и визуальное повествование. Но лично для меня это идеально, музыка прекрасная, сюжет в целом не сказать что сложный, просто ты сам достраиваешь картинку сопоставляя с тем что тебе показали. Хотелось бы видеть больше таких проектов.

我很少说一个游戏毫无意义，但Virginia无疑是垃圾中的佼佼者。
顶着505发行商的惊悚标签，实际内容寡淡无味，剧情篇幅不如一片头皮屑，还反复场景复用，成就强制看完结尾垃圾生产者列表，还强制二周目，更是恶心至极。
以30帧为基础设计游戏，谁给你的勇气？菜单用得是蜡笔风格，结果游戏用得是低模风格，我觉得每个看到婴儿浓眉大眼的人都会忍不住笑出来，唐完了，我感觉不到任何艺术成分，玩久了完全没有享受，纯恶心。
切场判定莫名其妙，整个游戏毫无对白，不存在主角对结局的选择，互动只有到处走走移动视角然后A。能体现剧情的只有秘密文件，想要看文本翻译还要去设置里面手动打开。太唐了。
这根本不是游戏，这是垃圾

Meine Einstellung zu Virginia ist ganz im Stile des Spiels ein wenig verkopft. Ich möchte keine Empfehlung aussprechen, aber auch nicht vom Kauf abraten. Ich stelle den interaktiven Mehrwert der Geschichte in Frage und möchte gleichzeitig dazu auffordern, diesen Ansatz in Spielen weiter zu erkunden.
Denn das Konzept ist auch knapp ein Jahrzehnt nach Release von Virginia selten gesehen: Ein Spiel in Kinofilmlänge, und dazu auch inszeniert und arrangiert wie ein solcher. Telltale und Quantic Dream schlagen in eine ähnliche Kerbe, wobei der Umfang deren Spiele eher mit einer Serie vergleichbar ist.

Virginia nimmt sich dagegen nur gut zwei Stunden Zeit, um uns in seinen Bann zu ziehen. Und verzichtet dabei sogar gänzlich auf Dialoge. Keine einfachen Voraussetzungen, doch der Einstieg gelingt gut. Wir schlüpfen in die Rolle von Anne Tarver, einer frischgebackenen FBI-Agentin, die zusammen mit einer Kollegin auf einen Vermisstenfall angesetzt wird. Im verschlafenen Städtchen Kingdom ist ein Junge verschwunden, wir vernehmen Angehörige und...schon bald wird ein erster interessanter Twist offenbart.

Entwickler Variable State stellt sich recht geschickt dabei an, die Storyentwicklungen auch ohne Sprachausgabe verständlich zu vermitteln. Visuell reißt Virginia keine Bäume aus, doch für den limitierten Low Poly-Stil lassen sich neben der gelungenen Farbgebung zumindest die Animationen der Charaktere eher auf der positiven Seite notieren. Die Mimik läuft keinerlei Gefahr, in das Uncanny Valley zu rutschen und wirkt im Rahmen des reduzierten Ansatzes ausdruckstark. Essenziell, um den Verzicht auf die Dialoge zu kompensieren.

Mindestens genauso wichtig ist die exzellente musikalische "Untermalung". Diese Formulierung steht in Anführungszeichen, weil der orchestrale Soundtrack für die Inszenierung und Dramaturgie eine immens wichtige Rolle spielt. Er treibt an, bestimmt die Atmosphäre und trifft genau die Qualität und den Ton, den wir aus unseren liebsten klassischen Mystery-Filmen kennen. Er schafft es zudem meistens, pünktlich wieder auf Zack zu sein, wenn der Spieler mal etwas am Bummeln ist, ohne dabei merklich fragmentiert zu wirken. Stark!

So war ich für etwa zwei Drittel des Spieles durchaus angetan von Virginia. Die Charaktere blieben mir zwar allesamt ziemlich fremd, aber es gab einige Fragezeichen, auf deren Beantwortung ich gespannt war. Und...naja, dann entschieden die Autoren wohl, dass es nach dem bisher recht bodenständigen Storyverlauf Zeit für David Lynch-eske Eskapaden wird.
Doch wo ich in einem Mulholland Drive die Faszination des Surrealen, die Gradwanderung zwischen Traum und Realität, regelrecht aufgesogen habe - ja, da löste Virginia so ziemlich das Gegenteil bei mir aus. Die Szenen des Gran finale führten meist nur zu verwirrten Fragezeichen, die zaghaft aufgebaute Bindung zur Geschichte ging jäh verloren, sobald ich nicht mehr folgen konnte.

Das Spiel versucht hier Dinge, die mit der limitierten Technik möglicherweise einfach nicht ausdruckstark umgesetzt werden können. So setzt sich Virginia zwischen die Stühle. Ich möchte nicht für jeden Lynch-Fan sprechen, aber mir war das einfach nicht genug. Für einen Vergleich mit Fargo fehlen dagegen die charmanten Charaktere und der Witz, selbst wenn man das finale Drittel ausklammert. Generell habe ich trotz der konstant ordentlichen Inszenierung die ganz großen oder auch prägnanten kleinen Momente vermisst, wie sie etwa ein Kentucky Route Zero bietet.
Trotzdem habe ich auf der Suche nach Antworten ein bisschen in den Foren-Threads gewühlt. Doch wo ich dann bei ähnlich rätselhaften Storys oft bei einem faszinierten "Aaah" und "Ooh, so hab ich das noch gar nicht betrachtet" lande, schloss ich den Browser nach der Virginia-Recherche mit einem ernüchterten Achselzucken. Nichtmal für das Ende habe ich eine wirklich befriedigende Interpretation gefunden.

Das Gameplay habe ich bisher gar nicht erwähnt, weil es kaum existiert. Wir machen alles per Mausklick und den Bewegungstasten. Die einzige spielerische Herausforderung umfasst das Finden von Sammelgegenständen und das Freischalten mancher Errungenschaften. Diese Aspekte laden nach eigenem Gutdünken dazu ein, sich die meist sehr kompakten und wenig detaillierten Umgebungen etwas genauer anzusehen.
Der generelle Mehrwert der Interaktivität von Virginia lässt sich in Frage stellen. Manchmal fand ich es eher nervig, nach einer Zwischensequenz wieder selbst zur Maus greifen zu müssen - nur um mit einem Klick den FBI-Ausweis auszuklappen. Manchmal war es aber auch angenehm, im Gegensatz zum Film Kontrolle über das Tempo zu haben.

Apropos Tempo: Das wird durch die vielen unterbrechungsfreien Schnitte schön gestrafft und dies ist ein Merkmal, über das gerne mehr Videospiele nachdenken dürfen. Ich weiß heute noch, wie ich vor acht Jahren im Erkundungs-Adventure Firewatch einmal von einem solchen Schnitt zum nächsten Storypunkt überrascht wurde, als ich mich schon auf eine längere Wanderung dorthin eingestellt habe. Eine solche Maßnahme reduziert natürlich die Spielzeit, aber in sorgsam ausgewählten Situationen könnte es genau das richtige sein, um Belanglosigkeit vorzubeugen - zumindest, wenn nicht die Immersion und das Kontrollgefühl des Spielers darunter leiden.

Richtung Ende zerfällt das aufgebaute Kartenhaus jedoch, auch weil die Ambitionen und Vorbilder größer wurden als es das limitierte Gerüst hergegeben hätte.

Невероятная помойка, в которой непонятно из сюжета ни-xy-я. Какие-то расследования, какие-то мертвые птицы, у главной героини то ли шиза, то ли просто сны, кто, че, где, ничего непонятно абсолютно. При этом в игре нет ни одной строчки текста, нет никакого ровного повествования, тебя постоянно бросают из одной локации в другую, показывают какой-то кусок истории, но потом это оказывается то ли фантазией, то ли чем-то еще, в общем, помои.

То, что в игре нет ни одного диалога, монолога и вообще ни звука человеческой речи почему-то подается как какая-то фишечка, но по факту это просто уничтожает и без того хромое повествование. Не знаю, кому это может быть интересно, и чем это может увлекать. Спасибо, Клим Саныч.

Even though I gave this game a thumbs down, it’s only because there’s no “meh” button. It’s just that it didn’t really click with me. Maybe some people would enjoy it as a calm, slow, movie-like experience. Maybe I’m just not “artsy” enough, I don’t know. There are definitely a lot of positives too, so I wouldn’t call it a bad game, but I wouldn’t recommend it either.
I actually enjoy walking simulators and cinematic, story-driven games. But this one doesn’t quite live up to either category. You occasionally walk a few steps or click on something, but there’s literally no choice involved. After a while, even those few interactions start to feel more like a chore than anything else.

There were some small details I wanted to read on screen, but the game moved on so quickly I didn’t even realize a new scene had started. I don’t mind non-linear storytelling. I don’t mind symbols or metaphors, actually, I really like that kind of thing. But only if they serve a purpose. When the game ended and everything was supposed to fall into place, I didn’t get that satisfying “aha!” moment. It just left me feeling nothing. Like a movie with a flat, unengaging narrative.

The synopsis says, “Experience a missing person investigation through the eyes of graduate FBI agent Anne Tarver.” That’s exactly why I was interested in the first place. And I would’ve been totally fine with the cinematic approach if, in return, I had gotten an intriguing, twist-filled investigation. But unfortunately, that’s not what this game delivered.

However, the game does have its good sides too. The atmosphere is really something, I loved how it played with light, sound, and the whole natural environment around you. The visuals were beautiful, the colors were great, and the music added a calm, relaxing vibe. That part honestly felt pretty special.

Eu achei esse jogo sensacional. A primeira partida achei muito confuso, achei que tiveram algumas pontas soltas, mas jogando uma segunda vez com mais calma e sem agonia deu pra perceber várias nuances que deixei passar na primeira partida. A história tem muita subjetividade, não há diálogos (precisa prestar atenção aos mínimos detalhes e aos significados de algumas passagens que não são diretas). É um excelente jogo que vale a pena experimentar. É um formato bem diferente do que se está acostumado. Gostei bastante.

“What if David Lynch made a video game?”

This seems to be the inspiration behind Virginia, in which you play Anne Tarver, an FBI agent assigned to investigate the disappearance of a teenage boy in the small town of Kingdom, Virginia. On the side, you are also covertly investigating your partner Maria Halperin. What starts as a straightforward case soon takes you down a twisted path uncovering corruption within the FBI.

The first thing you notice in this game is that the “game play” is extremely limited; the only things your character can do are walk forwards, look at stuff, and interact with some objects. You don’t even need to guess what objects to interact with, because the mouse cursor will show you what objects are relevant or not. All you need to do to progress the game is to keep clicking.

In that sense this is not a “game” in the traditional meaning of the word, it is more like an interactive story. The player is rendered passive, just a spectator whose participation in the story is little more than a formality.

The second thing you notice is that there is also no dialogue in this game. You might think that FBI agents investigating a missing teen would need to talk to some people to search for clues - but you would be wrong. Your character goes through the entire game in silence. What little communication there is tends to be through body language. Even the facial expressions are muted, every character just has a blank stare.

While playing Virginia I was reminded of another zero-dialogue game - Dear Esther. The difference between Virginia and Dear Esther is that while the player in Dear Esther does not speak, you do have the narrator to fill in the silence, and to add context and purpose to the player’s actions. In Virginia you don’t even have the luxury of a narrator. Well, at least the music is good.

I know that this is a small studio and maybe they just didn’t have the resources for voice acting - but there are alternatives they could have used.

Lacking both action and dialogue, the result is a game that feels sterile, empty and flat. There are moments of suspense, but these are short-lived and often don’t go anywhere. Since there is no dialogue, none of the characters can really develop a personality, they are just a revolving door of expressionless faces.

The main character and her partner are equally generic. The relationship between them does develop a little bit, but there is only so much relationship arc you can have with someone who has the personality of a brick wall.

The one thing that might have made this game enjoyable would be some actual detective work. If the player had the satisfaction of gathering clues and trying to piece them together, that would provide some justification for all the walking and clicking. As it is, you do not need to investigate anything, because the game does it all for you. You just tag along for the ride - Special Agent Redundant, FBI.

Although the small town setting is an important part of the Lynchian vibe they are going for, you don't actually get to see much of the town except for a café, a bar and the police station. You spend a lot more time in the FBI office walking down empty corridors.

I wish I could recommend this game because some parts of it are really well done, especially the cinematography, music and lighting. Sadly there just isn’t enough there. Virginia feels like someone laid the groundwork for a great game, but then forgot to add any gameplay. If you have two hours to spend, go watch Twin Peaks instead.

Unsure why all the negative reviews. If you can vibe with xfiles or twin peaks then this is a short film-esque little gem that's not too long, but is interesting throughout. Def worth vibing with while eating ramen with your best friend while playing - followed by a late night smoke and coffee break to discuss the plot. A lot more enjoyable than something like Life is Strange.

A ausência de diálogo e a velocidade com que algumas informações são apresentadas (p. ex., o pouco tempo disponível para ler um arquivo do FBI) faz com que a atmosfera de incompreensibilidade seja enorme. Nesse sentido, é bem lynchiano mesmo: há coisas nesse jogo que não são para serem compreendidas, mas vivenciadas atmosfericamente. Talvez seja essa a reflexão do jogo: a possibilidade da verdade, e como os emaranhados de relações que construímos com os outros embaralham essa possibilidade.

I had Virginia on my radar for some time, and ended up buying it despite the mixed reviews. I genuinely love cinematic experiences in gaming, despite them often leaning on the shallow or cliché Hollywoodian déjà-vu. *COUGH*Heavy Rain*COUGH* Still, when I read “Fargo” or “David Lynch”, mind you, I may gonna take a look for myself, because it is kind of a bold claim to make about an indie game.

So I did, and mixed feelings I have.

Whether it is a game or a movie, when a trailer shows you more awards than actual gameplay, it is a big red flag to me. This said, lets keep going.

Just a few technical notes first:
Despite it being low poly, you cannot run this game on a potato, so be advised. It also will give many people motion sickness, but you can deactivate some graphical options that will help. Also, low polygons count is sometime inconsistent. For example, your hands are detailed, but other characters' hands are super-blocky, yet you see them as often as yours, sometime shaking hands, thus breaking the immersion a little bit. Also, the menu artwork doesn't match the rest of the game stylistically. So there's regular inconsistencies remembering you that it is an indie game. Finally, one gameplay mechanic I appreciated, is that, despite not being a point-and-click, you can play the whole game solely with the mouse, kind of like a movie, where you can take a drink or even snack while watching/playing, so thank you developpers for that!

Anyway, for an indie title it does a lot of things right:
It has an excellent photography direction, like sudden transitions with no warning (kinda like the game Paratopic, or just David Lynch's style), a good use of colors and lights, despite its reduced palette and solid flat environments. But above everything else, what it does best is exploiting the first person perspective as both a pertinent gameplay mechanic and an effective artistic medium. After all, it is a walking simulator, this is the least it should do in the first place, in my opinion. Finally, the music score is astonishing, on the other hand you can tell its inspiration from a mile away. This said, the game is inspired by great people like the Cohen brothers' and their superb use of everyday's rural and suburb America, thus the title, so it's not a bad thing per se.

Why the negative review then?
Because, in my opinion, it all ends there. It only partially holds its promise: Yes, it is a melancholic stylish cinematic walking simulator, granted, but everything else is just not right. Apart from the music, sound is underexploited, with no voice acting and little sound design. I mean; the game feels stylish at first, then this audio void combines with two other ones; an artificially slow tempo, and quite a few bland, flat and repetitive environments. An underlying boredom gradually sets in, kinda like when you read an underwhelming novel, that stills throws a few hooks at you to keep you reading but never really delivers in the end. All of this happening in a 1.5 hour game.

What about the story and the characters?
There are two stories, what should be the main story is about a disapearance case investigated by the FBI, you being the agent in charge, the other one is also an investigation, this time it is you investigating your FBI partner. Without spoiling anything, I must reveal that the “main” story just never quite resolve itself “per se”, and ends up like a butched up secondary afterthought. I suppose it tried to hide behind a smokescreen of mystery, where we don't really know for sure in the end, because if I take the ending to the 1st degree, it's overwhelmingly disapointing. How about just waking up from a dream, while we're at it? Seriously.

Anyway, something wasn't right, and after finishing the game, I had to step back and made myself a mental briefing of what went wrong with this game. The absence of voice acting AND the absence of text did hurt the story, but something went wrong beyond all of that. All I could see was as if the real focus of the developper had been somewhere else. You see, the second story quickly overshadows the first, and it follows two very uninteresting, uncharismatic, and unhappy persons, even almost rude, at times. The two of you also happen to be the only female investigators around, but also the only women of color of the game. It's just impossible not to notice. Fair enough, weird, but who cares? That's until I found feminist material semi-hidden in a secondary room in your partner's appartment, kind of like an easter egg. Then I understood it wasn't all in my head : A good deal of the story really focus around these women's careers, ambitions, and life challenges, versus a world of men, eventually pretty much depicted as antagonists. It was weird to give this centerplace in the game, when an actual captivating disapearance mystery is just casually tossed aside, almost as an accessory.

Toward the end of the game, these two slow-paced stories start to mix into a frenetic and surreal clusterf*ck of hallucinations and glimpses of reality that mixes together to reach an absolute anti-climax of confusion. It looked like the art direction had to relieve themselves of a surreal cinematic fantasm, it was cool but disconcerting, and it can't absolves for the game's obvious shortcomings. When I think of it, the very last scene of the game confirms everything I suspected: An ideological statement was given priority over an actual organic, organised and satisfying story, and that's a shame, really. I'm not asking you not to play this game; it has its moments, just be warned that it is short, not very interesting storywise, and in the end, you will be disapointed, especially in light of what it clearly could have been! Believe me, I wish I could recommend this game, but I can't.

My note 6.5/10

If you want good cinematic walking-ish simulators of the same vibe, that are worth playing :

A very thoughtful and dreamy game with some memorable ideas. The score is phenomenal and really carries the whole piece. I got recommended this game as an "adventure game" and would argue that it isn't really one of those. I liked the game anyway but if you showed up exclusively for an adventure game then caveat emptor.
