This is one of those games you remember looking incredible back in the Xbox 360 days, then you finally play it and realise your memory added about ten layers of quality that were never actually there, leans too much into the cartoonish style which clashes hard with the whole gritty viking thing they're attempting to do.

The game is fine, till you get stuck after the Darkwater battle, so everything goes to hel and is time to test your patience... at leat is not crashing, unless you're using Nvidia. So AMD at least makes it "playable".
Just backup your autosave from time to time.

Pros:
*Decent graphics
*NIce mechanics since you can learn several skills to make some variations.
*Cool norse mythology story.

Cons:
*The optimizations is a disaster. Needs a remaster or something.
*probably a lack on enemy variations.

I've changed my mind and I can't recommend this not matter how much I like this game, because for some people it may be too buggy and completely unplayable, which is too sad.

TL;DR:
An underrated gem from my Xbox 360 days, but a sh!t PC port. Not worth at full price.

Previously played on Xbox 360. Unlike the console release, this port is atrocious AF! So many issue that it really needs to be updated by Hardlight or have modders patching the sh!t out of it.

Summary:
You play as Skarin in the Command of Freya, Goddess of War to stop Hela (NO! Not from F@#K!NG MARVEL, YOU CHILDREN!) from unleashing Ragnarok. Spoiler alert, Skarin ended up being betrayed by Freya because his wish to be in Valhalla was not granted.

Gameplay:
It's an action adventure game and a successor to Creative Assembly Spartan: Total Warrior from the old console. If you played that game, well it's kind of like that. A High-scale epic battle. You need to freed you fellow warriors from being held captive by Hela forces and freed them. Once you freed everyone, the WAR IS ON! Which took your Framerate f@#k!n harder.

Pros:
While a solid game, it features a large open world of Midgard, where you can freely explore it from doing quest to fighting enemies. The moveset is much more brutal and the upgrades are okay.

Cons:
Sheesh! A lot! So much that if you get this game on console, f@#k!n stay there! Don't go to PC. Doesn't matter if you have a high-end RTX 5090 or some sh!t, it's just a f@#k!n mess. Let me break it down a few issues I (and many) have suffered):
- Some traversal area can be confusing to access through. Like, you have to go to this large f@#k!n building just to retrieve an item to call your dragon. The reason why Yellowpaint exist, because it took me memory back that the vines are interactable. F@#k!n hell!
- Skarin moves f@#k!n slow. So, if you wanna get to A-to-B, you need to get used to how he runs. This also one of the things that took me memories back.
- When in an open battle, your framerate tanked so f@#k!n hard, that you can't play the game through sh!t! You'll get 16FPS and that's it! Deal with it!
- In-addition, if you get overwhelmed so much in the Open Battle, the game will crash. It did for me 3 times.
- The PC port is capped at an unstable 30FPS. Which means, your performance means f@#k all! Either use Loseless Scalling or DXVK from doitsujin/DXVK Sarek if your hardware aren't capable.
- There's a slight input delay when using both Keyboard & Wireless controller, so for gamepad, I recommend choose a Wired gamepad instead. Reason why is, while playing with Wireless controller, if your gamepad disconnect on it's own, you need to restart the game! Otherwise, it won't respond.
- Graphical feature is limited in the Config Launcher, so you're just gonna have to deal with it.
- Games has problems running on Windows 11. I have my friend tested this on his PC and there needs to be a few tweaks to get it running. Some find it helpful, others...not so much. This was a careless port from SEGA, which is a shame.

VERDICT:
I'm not saying Viking is a bad game. I enjoyed it on my Xbox 360 days. But good god! This PC port is f@#k!n awful! I only realizes this port exist is from a YouTuber name Camp Xbox. His vid, suddenly refresh my memory. After I saw the game exist on PC, I quickly get it on sale! But to my surprised, this Port...is a f@#k!n mess and I feel like it's not the same game I played from the Xbox 360.

My advice if you REALLY want to get it ON STEAM, Get it on SALE instead. Don't buy it on f@#k!n full price. Start getting used to it. If you're those people that can't stand 30FPS, well...this game is probably not for you, you sick f@#k.

If you still have the game on console, doesn't matter if it's Xbox 360 or PS3, STAY THERE! As for Emulation like RPCS3 (and likely Xenia), it's...not good. Basically, a friend of mine tried it and that the Text are gone and the game constantly froze after reaching the next location. So...not worth it. Play it on the System (if you still have one). Who knows, maybe Xbox Scarlet will re-open the Compatibility bullsh!t in the future.

Locked at 30 FPS with no in-game way to uncap it. The controls are a total mess, and having to exit the game just to adjust mouse sensitivity in a separate launcher is peak 2012 port laziness. The gameplay loop isn't nearly good enough to justify jumping through these hoops. Save your money.

I really enjoyed this game. It's very basic but has some very satisfying combat and war moments. It's not without issues, it is repetitive, the audio is too quite, combat is missing that much needed sound "impact" and the most glaring issues of all is the 30fps lock. There is no way around this at the time of this review. I ended up using the Cheat Engine tweak (noted in the discussions) and set the speedhack to 1.2. This does NOT make it 60fps but it definitely makes the game play feel smoother and not so sluggish. Ran fine on Windows 11 but I did have a couple of crashes straight to desktop,no progress was lost, this game autosaves very often. During this current time of terrible AAA gaming it has been a treat to step back in time and play some of the old PS2\PS3 games that I would have normally passed on.

If you are looking for a straight forward hack and slash game you can't go wrong with this on a sale.

Peak of nordic action, you may not be a viking raiding the shores, but there's yet to be made a game with gameplay as juicy, varied and rewarding. All the ambushes, sieges and fights with random patrols that stroll between locations and the gore of it all is fenomenal

Good pacing, alright story and characters, I wasn't a fan of how gods got involved, but they are quite memorable and if I could swing my sword and axe at more abominations, they can all start throwing their champions and armies at me. 3 or 4 islands (I don't remember now and I don't know why I haven't left review earlier) that feel different enough but it's still mostly same stuff on greater scale, skill progression also plays into that but isn't too robust (some attacks are nasty tho and I love it)

As much as intros to big fights and the story zenith were cinematic, I would love to see more actuall dialogues, exposition and not just barking orders and taunts from npcs, even if it was supposed to be a meat grinder and all the talking was there to make it less awkward. On top of that I would like it more if before sieges forts would be packed more or at least around them there would be more enemies ancamped, where are all of them coming from during the conquest? why can I just run around and get collectibles and ignore everyone? where is the challange? cos the stealth way is way too boring to go all the way through with it

Sure it has some issues on PC, but there are worse cases of old or ported games honestly

I got this for free in some bundle, so its not really a game I had any interest or any previous connection with. Its your standard mediocre action game from your XBOX 360 era, a bit too repetitive and simplistic. It has a rudimentary open world but from what I could see its barely populated. I wouldnt recomend it, but I guess we need to put it in its time frame. At the time there wasnt as many options for this kind of game.

Viking: Battle for Asgard es de esos juegos que no te piden permiso: te sueltan en un mundo abierto, te dan un hacha y te dicen “haz historia”. Y si lo tuyo es la Acción y Aventura con combate cuerpo a cuerpo, mitología y batallas con sabor a saga, aquí hay entretenimiento real, sin maquillaje.

Eso sí: no vengas esperando la segunda venida del diseño moderno. Con una comunidad actual de 4 jugadores, esto se siente como visitar una aldea abandonada donde el único que sigue trabajando eres tú… y tu necesidad de completar logros. Aun así, con 945 recomendaciones totales, queda claro que mucha gente le encontró el encanto a esta brutalidad con corazón.

Si te atrae la fantasía vikinga y toleras ciertas asperezas, es una experiencia “buena”: no perfecta, pero con suficiente personalidad como para no hundirse en el olvido.

RTSS проблему не решает и бывают просадки до 17 fps, что просто ужасно.

The ones who gave negative comments needs to know that this game is from 2008.
I finished it and had it since like 2014-isch and at first i thought it sucked but when i came longer and longer in i actually started to enjoy it even tho it was alot of rinse & repeat stuff but i liked it.
The large-scale battles that happends 1-2 times every map is fun as hell, chaotic and you can tell that the guys at Creative Assembly created this game because it was basically total war but in 3rd person.
The story wasn't interesting at all but i liked the gameplay.

Do i recommend it? Yes if you like older games. No if you're a graphic fanatic!

I think its a fun game given how old it is. I got it on sale; and I definitely wouldn't recommend full-price, but its a nice mind-numbing hack and slash. The battle system is a bit easy. The war-type big battles are a lot of fun too! If you are into Nordic Mythology you'd probably be into this game for that alone.

18 yrs ago i used to play this game with my buddy like crazy on my or his xbox 360 when we were stoned. such a lovely game and besides some sound issues it still plays well on modern hardware and is still fun. i mean the fighting mechanics work better than in AC valhalla.
i love the lil things in viking e.g. when your troops randomly start to practice sword fighting and wrestle. the old games have so much soul which the gaming industry nowadays can just dream about.
there is a 30 fps cap but everyone who is oldschool couldn't care less. controls work flawless with controller as well.

there is another game of that kind named spartan: total warrior. same fun as vikings for sure.

Gameplay is fun, Story is there, Ambient background music is not- seemingly by design, odd choice (play it or another soundtrack on YT in the background), PC port is playable on KBM (as usual this could have been better). There is a fov patch and fan patches for better visuals, don't pay full price but it's not a bad unfun game.

Sometimes I enjoy eating butter bread. This game is butter bread.

It's open world, but there is nothing in the world which is also lifeless. Your objective is to liberate areas of the islands from the demonic horde, once you do this, the weather changes and humans will pour out of buildings. It's not a bad idea, it would of been nice to see people rebuilding damaged structures, maybe dismantle the giant bone cages you've just freed them from, but no.

It's interesting to see the rise of new game mechanics that are poorly implemented. For example, you need to button bash to activate a stone for fast travel. (Why???)

I was told this was similar to Spartan: Total Warrior which I've been replaying on the PS2 and remains a lot of fun. This doesn't compare other than when you have sieges, there are A LOT of dudes. This is pretty cool and is a nice spectacle when you round up the lads and begin your attack, but again, a wasted opportunity. No way to command troops.

The combat is very basic, just alternate smashing A and X and you will be fine. The executions were nice but not after seeing them 300 times. The combat is way more sluggish in-comparison to Spartan where you can quickly slice up dudes with dual wielding swords, or shield smash 20 Romans when you are surrounded. No, just the same weapons and armour the entire game.

The biggest fault is that the game lacks character. The player character is silent, there's no good side characters, the world doesn't have life (the world can look cool at parts, but it's mostly plain hills). If there was a bit more life in the game, or some of the zanyness from Spartan, this would have been way more fun.

I wish I weren't a completionist and didn't bother with this, but the game is fine enough that I completed my Viking shopping list of objectives. So yeah, give this one a pass.

It's ok. I wouldn't buy it through.... I don't recall buying it... I think it was in a humble bundle, that's how I got it. But yeah... It's ok. Don't buy it unless it's part of a bundle.

The lighting on the characters are the worst I've ever seen in a game in a long time. I think this is one of those games that need an RTX Remix because man it's bad.

18 hours later...
I still wouldn't buy it. But I do want to finish it. The combat is pretty cool, it pretty much the only thing keeping me in the game. I really like taking down the enemies with the shields, it just fun to watch then get caught up in a nice attack combo!

My only issue with it is that I can't change my buttons. There's a setting to change your controller layout but for some reason it doesn't stick. There's no way to change any real settings in game you have to come all the way out to adjust anything.

One last thing. The game stutters like crazy when moving between captured and un-captured locations. It happens on high and low settings, but it's pretty bad on high settings. This would be the reason I wouldn't recommend buying the game. Other than that it's still very playable.

Viking: Battle for Asgard is not a bad game, but it is very mediocre.
Also it didn't age well, even when compared to competitors like the early God of War games.

Made by an established developer Creative Assembly, it was clear that they were trying to ride the popularity if this genre. They have been better known for their Total War series, so their action games Spartan and Viking were not standing out. I feel like they put emphasis on quantity over quality.

The main selling point of this game has always been the promise of being able to fight alongside huge armies.
The dream of every Total War player! Something "Mount & Blade 2" or "Dynasty Warriors" managed to give us!!
Yet we get Ubisoft-style AsCreed's outpost busting before AsCreed's outpost were even a thing. Only after conquering an entire map, will you have the opportunity to fight alongside an army, but even then it is mostly scripted.
"liberate the farm, still, lumber mill, and the quarry in Town A." Now repeat that 4 more times. What a slog..

I won't even go into how it slaughtered the Norse mythology or lacks any coherent story.
When "Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice" is a better Viking game than this, you know you fkd up.

This game always caught my eye in stores back in 2012 but I could not get it because it was an XBOX and PS3 exclusive. While I was still playing PS2, contemplating Wii and transitioning into PC games on Steam.
So it was a surprise to me that they even made a PC port of this game. On constant $4 discount.
But after trying it out, it was pretty MID to be honest.
It is a product of its time and I would have enjoyed it much more back in the days.

Repetitive combat and mission design, lifeless open world, clunky controls and camera, useless AI armies, weak story and utterly forgettable characters except the shmexy Freya and Hel designs.
No wonder this game has been forgotten and isn't on any underrated gems lists.
Mind you, God of War 3 came out in 2010.
Too little, too late. Not worth it, even back in 2012.

I’ve played Viking: Battle for Asgard for close to 40 hours, beaten it twice, and even 100%’d the Steam achievements. It holds up surprisingly well and feels very close to the original, especially when played with a controller.

Performance was solid for me overall—only about 10 crashes in almost 40 hours, and it ran smoothly on a modern PC. The framerate can get a bit choppy at times, but nothing that ruined the experience.

If you played the original and want a blast from the past, I highly recommend it. It’s a fun, nostalgic adventure that still delivers.

I don't feel the game deserves mixed review rating so here's a positive review for it.
I had lots of fun with it on Steam Deck. Depending how the controls are on PC I could see it not being as enjoyable without a controller, but I've yet to find another game like this that lets you play out giant set piece battles with hundreds of troops (Assassins Creed does it but only like once a game), and there's very little in the Norse/viking genre to begin with.

Esse jogo é nostalgia pura! É um jogo incrivel, gostoso de jogar e bem facil, não é pra alguem que quer dificuldade, mas tem um porem... I first played this back in 2009 on console and wanted to revisit for the nostalgic hit, and it certainly hit, I went for 100% achievements and it was a fun experience, even compared to modern day games, it does have its issues but if you enjoy games like Shadow of War, or just love to have a flow of melee combat then this is perfect for you.

I played on the hardest difficulty due to achievement grind but I wouldnt describe it as that hard, the quick time events stay the same for each enemy type making that mechanic less of a challenge and more of just a memory game, I rarely used health potions purely due to forgetting, but death has little consequence in this game, except for the respawning of enemies, so its not a big deal to just keep running in until you achieve your goal

I am biased as I was hit with nostalgia when playing but considering the release date this game is amazing, this was my first experience of this genre and ive since gone on to love Shadow of War/Mordor, Most Assassin Creeds and a lot of melee based combat games with this being my anchor point, its has a host of feel good mechanics that aide this in being the great game it is, clearing map areas to be taken over by your own allies, ai vs ai, large scale sieges, stealth when wanted, an actual interesting story, collectable challenges, dragons and the list goes on.

This isnt without its issues, the game closed on me multiple times, luckily the auto save function is pretty decent, it also froze my entire system twice, Id assume this is down to the poor port to pc but I have proven its fully playable from start to finish, the camera doesnt always work in your favour and with combat being dependant on direction this can be a bit of a fumble at times.

Overall I do highly recommend this, yes its got a few issues but it really is a gem of its time, if you like anything similar and dont mind a slightly dated graphic experience then definitely give this a try.

Finally got to play it again and enjoy my time like old days. It is a good experience overall but very repetitive. Free men, beat mini boss, gather dragon stones, start battle, repeat.

In the Game Cube era this was good food. A bit bland, but still nurishing.
But even back then gamers would have complained about the lack of music in anything but the cutscenes, the repetitive button-mashing, and the need to invert the joystick controls after every single start of the game. There is no information about any of the shop items, and whatever upgrade you purchase does not actually seem to have much effect.
If you just want to dismember some vikings with sword and axe - this will fill a few hours. But be prepared to repeatedly think "why isn't this much better?"

El juego es un ejemplo claro de 50-50 , si bien le falta mas vida al mundo abierto y podria mejorarse mucho la ambientación sonora, el sistema de batalla es disfrutable sobre todo cuando desbloqueas los combos, el apartado gráfico es pasable y la historia es, aunque trillada, suficiente para darnos el pretexto de matar enemigos.

No es el mejor juego de su época pero logra ser entretenido, cuando funciona sin problemas. El juego se empeñó en que no lo disfrutara, si bien la primera isla no presento problema, al pasar a la segunda cada cierto tiempo se congelaba la imagen (mas no el juego) sobre todo al girar rápido o al pasar de gameplay a cinematicas, se solucionaba con alt-tab y regresar, pero en ocasiones eran freezeos casi inmediatos uno de otro. Medio se solucionó con bajar la calidad grafica, y el FOV mod ayudó otro poco, pero sin desaparecer el problema.

Solo lo recomendaria por nostalgia, o, si ya lo tienes, checa si no te da errores.

El proceso para instalarlo por completo es poco convencional, pero iniciando la configuración desde el botón "jugar" de Steam te permitirá configurar los controles (incluido el dualshock4), desde ahí ya solo necesitará abrirlo de forma normal, corre bastante bien, hay muchas quejas por los 30fps bloqueados pero si ya habías jugado este juego en la 360 lo sentirás exactamente igual, también comprobé lo que muchos mencionan del bug despues de la batalla de darkwater y no tuve ningun problema, el juego sigue corriendo normal. El combate si puede ser algo repetitivo pero si lo compras por la nostalgia lo recomiendo al 100%.

Very fun game. Peak 10/10. Game play is very fun and can be quite challenging at times. The story is you going around and liberating vikings to fight the legions of hel, not the best story telling but its decent, ending was quite rushed. The fight scenes in the bigger settlement battles are so good,

Gives lord of the rings and god of war vibes. It's absolute cinema. The magic is also very cool and fun, being able to buff your fellow vikings with ice, lighting and fire weapons. Moving around the islands is very fun and discovering secrets is great. I checked every nook and cranny.

I did also play this on PS3 years ago and it was just as good if not better than I remember. This should have gotten way more attention and had a remake and a sequel at least by now.

It is capped at like 30 fps which made it quite wonky and stiff. Being a 17 year old game it is bound to have such issues I guess. Fun to play so definitely worth checking out.

win10装directX插件到游戏文件夹，兼容模式win7启动。
汉化补丁（3dm轩辕汉化和游侠汉化）也是导致闪退原因之一。
游戏太老了，加载地图或cg会闪退，退出游戏到游戏菜单再进入游戏也会闪退，所以还是别玩了。。。

Viking: Battle for Asgard is a nostalgic game for me. I remember watching my Grandpa play it on the 360, and as a young kid who loved the world of large armies and battles, this game was so epic to me and left an impression on me even 10+ years later. Now I get to go back and experience the game for myself. The game has that 360 charm, the story is based on Norse Mythology, and the storyline is decent and interesting enough to follow. The capped frame rate at 32 FPS really sucks, but you get used to it. Surprisingly large battle sizes fighting against Hel's armies with Vikings, it's pretty epic and cool, more enemies than I expected for a 2009 game. Combat is also fun and enjoyable, it's a lot like Shadow of Mordor

[h2]HOWEVER[/h2] do NOT buy this game. Read the Community Section on this forum if you must, tthe game has uncrecoverable crashing, of which you cannot fix. I tried for 10 hours to fix the crashes after the Darkwater chapter and could never fix it. Ran it on a spoofed Voodoo GPU, iGPU, DirectX fixes, autosaves didn't even work. Whatever was stated on the community forum I tried and it DID not work.

Y sí, es muy 2008 (en Steam se lanzó recién en el 2012). Se siente parecido a Brutal Legend. Pero no es mal juego, para nada. Los combates son simples. Tenés combos, pero no son fluidos como uno esperaría, mas acertar golpes se sienten bien y dan la sensación de potencia, de que las armas realmente atraviesan los enemigos, no así las tomas de remate que la cámara lenta es muy lenta y parece mucho lo que tarda en dar el golpe de gracia. Los gráficos son geniales, para la época habrá sido un juego de altos requerimientos; los efectos están bien, los manúes e interfaz parecen arcaicos. El mapa parece anticuado (para no decir incómodo), pero te acostumbrás. A las voces les falta un toque, se escuchan como sin emoción. El uso de runas y poder mejorarlas le da el toque justo. Mis quejas con subjetivas, pero siendo objetivo no es un juego espectacular sin embargo es disfrutable y recomendable.

Um jogo divertido, com diversas inspirações no que deu certo em outros jogos mas adiciona seu próprio diferencial. A jogabilidade é fluída, rápida e responsiva. Dificuldade se eleva naturalmente de forma que o jogo nunca se torna fácil ou difícil demais.

Niestety nie było mi dane przejść całej gry ponieważ po przejściu 1 mapy i wczytywaniu na drugą cały czas mnie crashuje.
Co nie zmienia faktu że na pierwszej się świetnie bawiłem. Lecz z powodów błędów które występują nie dam oceny pozytywnej.

A mix of stealth and action packed. It's fun to explore areas, gather an army, complete tasks and start a war. Easy to travel with many areas, combat works great with controllers. For compatibility this didn't work Windows 11 but works great with Ubuntu. Seems like Steam proton works a lot better without any single issues.
