I expected this to be similiar to the original flash game, only to realize it was completely reworked. Which is not inherently bad, as i do think the addition of spells and perks to be interesting, for example. But it still lost the charm of the original, where you started with nothing and freed heroes acted as temporary power-ups (which could also be customized pre-game). Now instead you pick your character from a randomized selection (tho they can be rerolled, but still random), with randomized spells and perks (with zero customization options), and that stays the same until you win or lose the run.

I've been playing since the update but it looks like the game is crashing while playing splitscreen the moment the p1 dies

* Game Style: Rogue-lite. Choose from 3 randomly generated characters that will possibly differ in class, weapons, h.p., traits, and skills. Descend short vertical stages (think Kid Icarus in reverse) filled with enemies while collecting XP, coins, keys, and unlocking chests, bonus stats, and new skills. The bottom of each stage has a boss that must be killed before being able to progress. Upon death, the player loses all XP and levels, but keeps all gold and any skills and traits that were acquired during the run. Then the cycle repeats; however, before starting stage one, you can use gold from the previous run to upgrade health, damage, and the value of "pacifist orbs" (items that give gold and xp that disappear once a stage's first enemy is killed.
+ I own Vertical Drop Heroes HD for pretty much everything that it has been released on. It's simple gameplay, charming colorful graphics, and excellent soundtrack (seriously good music here!) make VDH easy to pick up but hard to put down.
+ It's perfect on the Steamdeck.
- I do wish that the game had cloud saves, but it's not that big of a deal for me.

Although I can see some people in this review section that seem to be unaware of it Vertical Drop Heroes is an flash game that was available to play on armorgames.com in the 2010s.
It was in fact one of my favourite flash games of the era, and one that i come back to every so often even now..
I found this game today and ended up buying it. I regret that decision now.

The original game was amazing, it did what it was supposed to do perfectly, and it explained everything in a matter of seconds, and gave additional information as was needed. This version? Doesn't explain jack... apparently I can unlock abilities for my characters that I can't activate and can't figure out how to activate, and the game doesn't tell me how to activate?
In the original it was as simple as pressing space bar, why does this need to be complicated?

In the developer notes of the original game this was written:
"My aim in Vertical drop heroes is to provide a quick, accessible game that nevertheless has depth and choice, therefore the game is a mix of tetris and more traditional rpgs. as with all the games I've made, part of the game is randomized so that it offers a different experience each time you play.

Each hero has a specific "feel": a defensive Paladin, a Balanced Ronger, an agile Thief, a powerful Mage and a battle orientated barbarian. The unlockables are designed to further customize these options for each player"

So how does this game fair when compare to the original?
1. The game isn't quick or accessible anymore, the tips and instructions don't work, the control scheme is awkward and it's entirely likely that new players will die instantly when they load in.
2. The game doesn't feel like it has any depth at all, it's just a simple bigger number beats the smaller number game, and the boss fights aren't complicated, they're basically just a numbers game now where in the original there were platform-based mechanics to them.
3. Each run feels the same, just a slog of random mechanics that don't make sense and often contradict abilities you've already unlocked (I unlocked the ability to stand on burning blocks, then immediately after nearly died to standing on a burning block.)
4. The five original classes have been simplified into three, which all feel the same imo and the original classes, where a lot of the fun originally camee from now occupy a background role, often doing nothing other than charging at the first enemy and dying instantly.
5. The Unlockables are non-existent. For example the thing that finally caused me to put down the game entirely is that I levelled up the peace orbs and ruby value increase three times and then picked up a peace orb and it didn't feel like it had been levelled up at all, it genuinely felt like it was where it should have been the entire time. Spending multiple early runs worth of gold brought the item to where the default should have been.
The other unlockables like abilities I'm already expressed I can't even figure out how you use them, the game didn't tell me and the obvious answer didn't work, combine that with them having a perplexing control scheme and the ability activation key could be anything on the keyboard, it could be the tilde key for all I know.

Ultimately while I am leaving this review on a game that has been on steam for 11 years now I'm just not happy that I saw a game called "Vertical Drop Heroes" by the original developer on steam, clicked onto it and bought it and found out late that it's not vertical drop heroes at all.
It is only because of how much I enjoyed the original game that I am not refunding this.

I don't remember buying this so maybe it came from a humble bundle. I was looking through my library when I stumbled onto it and decided to go for all achievements. Procedurally generated rouge light games are usually hit or miss. It’s a saturated market so it didn’t particularly spark intrigue for me initially. It also possesses a classic new grounds style art that I must commend for its DIY vibes. That being said it wasn’t the prettiest game to look at, at least for my personal taste.

The game play itself is where the game shined. Just make sure you disable auto attack in the settings. You’re tasked with making it to the bottom of the screen and how you go about that depends on the level, the layout, your build, and the monsters. In theory, you don’t have to attack any enemies at all. You seemingly could complete an entire run passively. How realistic that is for the final boss is debatable and likely based on your build but I love that about the game.

I do have some gripes. The spikes for one can absolutely destroy a run especially towards the end. Need to fall through a gap with two spikes on either side? Better hope the game decides your not half a pixel too far to the left or right and oops your dead. Some of the enemies can be frustrating to deal with. The flying octopus for instance with its phase ability. Some enemies can destroy the environments before you have a chance to even realize what’s going on leaving the floor on fire and you struggling to avoid clusters of flying enemies but that’s a part of random generated levels as opposed to curated design. You gain variety and a little bit of BS difficulty spiking is along for the ride.

All in all, a very charming game. The game play loop was addictive and it was very clear that this was a passion project. Most of my complaints are to be expected with a smaller game like this let alone one of 2014. I think $7 feels a bit steep of an asking price. I doubt most folks will put 40 hours in like I did. If you like 2D games, rough lights, or new grounds; I think you’ll get a kick out of this one. Maybe wait for it to go on sale or buy a discounted key. Cheers!

Really hate to give this a bad review, but the flash game was much much better. The whole draw of that for me was the class system, which virtually is nonexistant here. For reworking so many mechanics, they didn't actually improve the flash jankyness. If you want to get this game, just play the original version. It's free and better.

O jogo segue estilo roguelite, você escolhe um herói, vai descendo as fases até enfrentar o boss e trocar de fase. Conforme ir morrendo e farmando moedas, você pode dar upgrades que melhoram o personagem.
Eu havia zerado esse jogo há 5 anos atrás e peguei hoje pra testar novamente, ele ainda continua sendo divertido. O problema é que envelheceu meio mal e falta algumas mecânicas como, save na nuvem (perdi meu save de 5 anos atrás), escolher a taxa de fps (o jogo é travado a 30) e o ritmo que é meio lento, mas depois de um tempo jogando você se acostuma.

Vertical Drop Heroes HD is a 2D roguelike platformer with procedurally generated levels and random characters.
The main objective of the game is to traverse 10 main levels and beat the final boss. But of course, you won’t do that on the first run. Instead, you gradually make progress, by collecting coins that you spend on permanent upgrades and better abilities for your heroes. You can also buy shortcuts to skip the earlier levels, putting you closer and closer to the end.
Gameplay is simple. There’s a basic attack and limited special abilities, and with the default auto-attack it’s mostly a matter to jumping into the enemies and avoiding obstacles. The difficulty lies is the different enemy abilities and the different hazards the levels contain. Levels can also contain merchants that sell more abilities, short side quests, shrines for temporary upgrades valid until the end of the run, and more surprises. It’s simple but enjoyable.
However, I’m not fond of the upgrade system. You see, you can’t freely customize your hero, you have to choose between 3 different random ones. Getting upgrades just means that the loot table can now contain the new stuff as well. And between the equipped weapon, 2 abilities and 2 passive traits, your only control is to re-roll over and over until you get the stuff you want, which is annoying. This means it’s better to only buy the best upgrades because your loot table will be better. And for me that’s bad design. I understand the idea of random heroes, but at least you should be able to unlock the ability to customize your hero, for example as a reward for beating the game the first time.
But despite this design choice, it’s a fine game to play on short sessions, especially if you’re aiming for 100%, because it can get grindy and repetitive. It’s also a remake of a flash title with the same name, minus the “HD”. Overall, I can recommend it on sale.

Минималистичный рогалик, в двух словах именно так можно описать Vertical Drop Heroes HD (2014).

Высокая реиграбельность и возможность разблокировки огромного количества мелочей и правда мотивирует разблокировать всех персонажей и попробовать как можно больше. Оданко не без недостатков, поскольку с другой стороны подвижностью героя порой проседает, то ли ее банально становится недостаточно, в особенности когда становится чрезвычайно напряженно и ощутимо сложно.

Но для любителей подобного жанра игра может понравится, правда цена чуть велика для того рода проекта, потому стоит дождаться скидки либо взглянуть на вечную классику жанра The Binding of Isaac (2011).

This is another of those cases where I wish there were a "meh" option. The game gets boring if you're going for completion, occasionally generates a level where progression is literally impossible, and I have no clue why you can attack as fast as you want if you're stuck with a cooldown on how often you can do damage.

Maybe get it if it's on sale, I guess.

A Rogue Legacy-esque game where you descend through a randomly generated level fighting monsters and collecting treasure which can be spent to improve the stats of your heroes on future runs. The issue is that the gameplay feels very flat and clunky. You have a couple of abilities that you can use, but I found that they rarely changed the tide of significant fights. More often than not to progress you just need to continually grind for upgrades until you can make it through a level through raw power.

I am a fan of all of nerdook's other games, so I finally checked this one out. It took me a little while to get it, but it is addictive.

My only complaint is that the game freezes sometimes and I lose all my progress. It is frustrating.

One of the first games I ever bought on Steam. It's simple and fun, but grindy. I can't fully recommend it at 7 bucks, but if you get it on sale it's fun for a couple runs.

I don't think many people will get the same ~30 hours of gameplay I got out of this -- that comes from clearing the game once, deleting your computer, and clearing it again five years later to try and get all the achievements (of which I'm still missing one..). But, if you're looking for a good 5 hours of fun, go for it.

Also, I think you can play multiplayer splitscreen on this, which was pretty fun if I remember correctly, but I last played that on Playthrough #1 half a decade ago, so who knows?

Игра представляет из себя двухмерный платформер, геймплей абсолютно ничем не примечателен, абилки достаточно скучны, выбор персонажей скудный, прокачка по всем канонам рпг, нет абсолютно ничего выделяющегося как и в геймплейных аспектах так и в геймдизайне, если вам меньше 14, то возможно вам здесь что-то будет и в новизну, но даже мне, вполне обычному обывателю, здесь делать нечего.

Могу отметить лишь неплохие ощущения от убийств монстриков и лвл апа, чувствуется рост "силы", игра в быстром темпе, но это не есть хорошо, проходится она слишком быстро, буквально часов 10, ощущение недотрaха.

Vertical Drop Heroes HD to gra po której się niewiele spodziewałem a do tego dopisek HD sugeruje że jest to jakaś ulepszona graficznie wersja podstawowej gry, ale na steamie żadnej nie znalazłem.
Gra jeżeli chodzi o czysty "gejmplej" to daje radę. Przez pierwsze 4 godziny autentycznie chciało mi się w nią grac i zobaczyć co twórcy przygotowali na koniec etapów. Dużym plusem gry są zróżnicowane plansze, wrogowie bohaterowie, bronie i umiejętności. Dobry pomysł z możliwością przechodzenia etapów bez zabijania wrogów czyli w trybie pacyfistycznym i to jest całkiem spoko zwłaszcza że możemy rozwinąć w "bazie" bonusy za takie przechodzenie plansz.
Elementem który trudno mi ocenić jest losowość generowanych plansz, bo z jednej strony w tego typu produkcji jest to przymus (w innym razie mielibyśmy schematyczne podejście czy też przechodzenie gry z poradnikiem), z drugiej tworzy to nieraz bardzo trudne fragmenty planszy których niemożna przejść nie tracąc części życia. Czasem można nawet utknąć na planszy "egipskiej?" w której są kwadraty poruszające się pionowo a na których górna krawędź ekranu działa jak ściana od której się owy obiekt odbija zmieniając kierunek ruchu.
Ogólnie przez całą grę miałem problem przede wszystkim z jednym elementem: podskakiwaniem i to nie tym przypisanym do przycisku górnej strzałki klawiatury a niemal każdym zachowaniem bohatera który podskakuje odnosząc obrażenia, niszcząc/otwierając skrzynki. W zasadzie co by sie nie działo to bohater podskakuje więc jeżeli chcemy uruchomić/użyć elementu na planszy (strzałka w dół) lub zebrać element np. klucz to będziemy mieli problem jeżeli w pobliżu jest wróg, albo sąsiaduje z pułapką (np kolcami), bo te można zebrać użyć tylko z pozycji stojącej na danym kwadracie.
Kolejny element który mi nie przypadł do gustu to tak zwany grind. Żeby w miarę komfortowo przejść planszę potrzebujemy powtarzać poziomy (najlepiej od pierwszego) dosyć często. Zgromadzonymi pieniędzmi można ulepszyć 3 elemety (zadawane obrażenia, ilość życia i bonusy do doświadczenia i pieniędzy). Tak jak wspomniałem dojście do 10 poziomu zajęło mi ok 4 godzin, przy czym moment w którym byłem w stanie przejść niemal każdym bohaterem do tego poziomu to ponad 10 kolejnych godzin, z czego rzadko kiedy byłem w stanie pokonać ostatniego boss'a.
No właśnie, ostatni boss to jakaś porażka. Za pierwszym razem mocno się zirytowałem kiedy 4 razy pokonywałem bossa a ten ciągle się odradzał. Ponieważ boss jest w pewnym sensie jednym z możliwych do wyboru losowo generowanym bohaterem to ma tak jak my dwie specjalne umiejętności, ale w ilości nielimitowanej, więc niedość że boss ma 6-7 żyć w sumie nie chciało mi się liczyć ile razy trzeba było go pokonać to jeszcze za każdym razem może mieć inne nielimitowane umiejętności specjalne. To prowadzi do takich absurdów jak przyzwanie 100+ dodatkowych wrogów: [url=https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2024377066] ok. 100 przyzwanych wrogów [/url]. W tej sytuacji udało mi się pokonać tę formę bossa, kolejna zginęła od szkieletów stworzonych z tych właśnie wrogów po śmierci bossa (to dzięki mojej pasywnej umiejętności), [url=https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2024377342] ok. 100 szkieletów [/url] ale kolajna już zamieniła się miejscami ze mną będąc nad kolacami (a te potrafią mocno zaboleć).
Podsumowując nie mogę polecić tej produkcji bo kończyłem grę z uczuciem zmuszania się a niżeli z radości że włączając kolejny raz "przygodę" mam jakiś cel czy nową motywację do pokonania tej jak dla mnie niesprawiedliwej na końcu gry.

Recomendo, bom passatempo, divertido e desafiador, vale o preço.
Uma mistura de rpg, roguelike e plataforma. Se você já jogou outros roguelike mais famosos vai ter uma noção do que esperar: colete moedas, mate monstros e passe pelos levels, com as moedas você pode ativer atalhos em cada level, liberar habilidades novas e melhorar seus atributos básicos, ao morrer tudo que aquele heroi tinha fora as moedas e os upgrades, são perdidos, e o jogo começa de novo.
O interessante é que têm tantas habilidades que te deixa curioso pra experimentar cada uma delas, os inimigos variados, os desafios nos levels e o fato do jogo ser todo em vertical ( o jogador está sempre se movendo pra baixo), deixa tudo mais interessante.
Encontrei bugs só 2 ou 3 vezes em 6 horas de jogo, o problema é que bugs que te trancam no mapa, te obrigam a recomeçar o jogo.

I recommend, good to kill some time, fun and challenging, worth the price.
A mix of rpg, roguelike and platform. If you have played other famous roguelike you will have a sense of what to expect: collect coins, kill monsters and go through levels, with coins you can activate shortcuts in each level, get new skills and improve your basic attributes, by dying everything that hero had out coins and upgrades, are lost, and the game starts again.
The interesting thing is that they have so many skills that it makes you curious to try each one, the varied enemies, the challenges in the levels and the fact that the game is all vertical (the player is always moving down), it makes everything more interesting.
I found bugs only 2 or 3 times in 6 hours of play, the problem is that bugs that lock you on the map, force you to restart the game.

This is an enjoyable roguelike rpg game, with nice progression with a unique nerdook graphics style.

I am planning on finishing the game still, but for now, the only time I reached the final boss he bugged out and kept spamming a powerful area-denial spell in the corner, making him unkillable.
There are some occassional issues, like teleporters not working, shrine of sparks projectiles getting stuck on terrain, but overall the game is sound mechanically. Only one death so far felt unfair and for 12 hours played (at the time of writing) it is not bad.

You can feel the laziness of the programming as you play. The free flash game of Vertical Drop Heroes by the same programmer (or at least the same art and such) is actually pretty OK. But this game was not done well.

1. You can't save at all. The only thing that saves is the upgrade buys and unlocks. And runs aren't short. This is absolutely unforgivable.

2. Lots of unlocks a worse than nothing. Worst offender is the Bone Knife, really hard to earn since you have to pass three levels as peaceful (and unlike what the statues say, No bonus gold for doing this difficult task. Shame shame) And none of the unlocks tell you what they do before you buy/unlock them. Nor can they be disabled so you don't have to spend more cash and time rotating past them.

Bone knife give you three times damage if you strike a enemy from behind. But as a cost it gives you one third health. Which is ludicrous, most enemies you will be killing in less than three hits even without the bone knife. There is no sneak function in the game and many enemies are impossible to strike from behind, Others to strike from behind you'd have to take risky maneuvers you can ill afford to do with your low health. Even if the random character combo did only combine shadow ability with bone knife (it doesn't) That limited use ability only protects you from melee hits anyway. Even with Shadow walk and minus the requirement to hit from behind, I still say it wouldn't be worth the one third health. That's a ludicrous penalty. Personally I'd have the bone knife do less damage from the front for it's extra damage from behind(but full health), and not one third damage from the front...

Another example is the Pickaxe. At the cost 10% less damage it allows you to destroy bricks. Sounds good? Not so fast. It destroys the bricks below you, not in front of you. Requiring you to leap around as you strike to avoid making the level even more difficult. It also only digs below you if there is something in front of you, which is weird. It also only selectively digs certain types of ground and does not break chests or cages etc. You will randomly get a single coin ever so many bricks but that's nothing.

Or the Dragon summoning ability, it's cost of destroying all items and heroes you would find and not going away till it touches a boss where it disappears in a cloud of fuzzy logic right when you need it most, if I had known it would be like that, I'd not have paid gold to unlocked it.

Other examples too, too many to remember and list.

3. Little details like how ice isn't actually slippery, it just causes you to keep moving left or right till the end of the ice if stood on.
Or how crossbows and bows don't tell you how many bolts are left or recharge with restore alters.
Or how alters that increase your damage by 1 for that level are such a joke since that's a paltry increase in your total damage you'll probably never have mean one less hit to kill an enemy, especially latter one.
Or how there is no gold bonus for passing a level as peaceful even though this is really hard and the game says there is.
Other stuff too, too much to remember or list.

4. Auto strike should absolutely be turned off for a decent game. It defaults as on and nothing explains how to get into options where you can turn it off.

5. Controls seem to be geared to a console and the author didn't bother properly converting them for a keyboard and mouse. A somewhat minor complaint as there isn't that many controls to be had in the first place but it would have been better adapted IMO.

6. Also sometimes the game freezes up for no apparent reason after you've played awhile. Actually it seems to crash a fair amount. And since you can't save, you lose all progress if this happens.

I had this game in my library for awhile now, so i decided to check it, at first, i was thinking that it would just be a bad mobile game pretty much like 99.9% of the mobile games.
But actually, it feels more like a flash game, but not a bad one.
It's a bit similar to Rogue Legacy in some aspects.
The game is overall easy except maybe for the final boss, but once you've unlock some skills, it should be easy enough.
But keep in mind that the game do get repetitive very fast, you could get more hours on Rogue Legacy than on this.

What it needs is more game modes and more content, game modes such as survival, i'm not a fan of survival but some people would probably like it, other than the survival mode, some kind of random generated "sandbox" adventure mode, you see, you got only 10 levels (plus the final one) but that's it, there's should be another game mode that mixes a bit of everything all together, also, you'll be seeing the same creatures in the other stages since there's not many.

Verdict, it's a fine game but not a game you'll be playing for very long, i'd recommend to get it at 0.99$ I got the game for 3$ and i'd say it could be sold for a bit less but it's not much in the end but keep in mind that the game's real value would be 0.99$ and certainly not 7.79$.
