This is a roguelike that does a good job of being action-based rather than turn based. It deserves more popularity and success than it got. The only downside is there aren't really classes, while you an select different starting loadouts they all play similarly.

unexplored is a bit of a mild name for how solid a roguelike adventure this game is
an even, uh, worse name would be

pros:
-vivid runs; where i have max stealth stuff and the shadows are providing genuinely safe harbour in hell-like depths, or ive gotten ahold of some extensive combo of materials ie copy scroll and scrolls
-a stack of maps for your adventure that are slow to explore and connected sparsely. you need to return after reaching the bottom. everything remains as you go up and down the y axis, stairs
-environmental hazards and chemistry. crafting/cooking of the try and fail variety. light sources and all its cons and pros. actors respond to distraction and alarms, like the alarm bell. religion, and conducts
-weird ass ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ orientation combat, where you effectively wield your hand equipment of choice directly, precisely in front of you, just like how doomguy hold his guns, dead center and w the sight near his chin
shields offer a very good barrier w the side they're literally on, in the live combat of swinging, stepping and strafing as you wait for cooldowns indicated by a differently shaded dagger
-distinct enemies. you will remember the ones that kill you and they will stress you out as you come up to them again even if its that pos mage goblin that uses all his randomly enchanted items and sundries as assigned by the universe run. or the spiders that jump. love spiders, normally, but the spiders in this are a legit minor threat
cons
-the waterlogged areas are AWESOME and they are also lethal run enders
-some iterations or runs can be bugged, in that old school procedural way. the religious system has a pray function which can get you a [necessary unavailable item] or whatever but itll happen. or itll appear to happen, but maybe you're just stupid/innattentive and haven't spotted the [necessary unavailable item]
-there are cryptic (but very thorough) mechanics normally found in hardcore rogues, namely; mystery. id-ing potions, scrolls and that shirt you just put on that now hurts and wont come off, is vital
-the crafting/stuff enchanting is a pain to really get to grips with (runes and enchant spots are sparce) as well as necessary. and not every enchant rock|enchant rock|weapon go together.
crafting is fine it just contains set recipes tropes. you can make tea, which is hot (yes temp) water plus tea. you can also make strength potions (perm +stat) that are two bodyparts of midtier (at least) enemies.
-sudden, immediate, steep death might be far harsher than youd like, and the results screen might not give you much more context for whatever happened. dont let it happen again? dont lose your temper, the next run has a gun plus gun ammo ingredients almost certainly, or a new gargoyle enemy you've never hit with an unenchanted sword before, and couldnt possibly be completely immune to a tier of damage
or huge murmuring ogres patrolling thin paths across a void, ogres being capable of knockback
or a lich, which rarely isn't a challenge across tropes

As a true roguelike OG beard-lord, I can wholeheartedly say, this game is a banger. It doesn't hold your hand. You're going to get owned, and you'll want to try again. Dark Souls never looked more pathetic. This is the only non-turn based roguelike that's worth mentioning. My only gripe is the cyclops dude, as I am quite partial to two-eyed protaganists. 9.7/10
Now that I've finally managed to beat the game on Hard level, after about 330 tries, I guess I can share my thoughts on it validly.
When I first took a look at Unexplored, coming upon it thanks to Unexplored 2, which is a very different game, I did not think that I was going to get much enjoyment out of it. After all, ARPGs are not really my thing. But the reviews were so positive, that I eventually decided to take a chance. And did the game ever grab me. From the simple, but not easy, fighting style, to the sheer variety of things in the game, to the clever interactions between certain aspects that it was a joy to discover, such as lighting a torch by dipping it into lava, the game is just fun to play.
The RNG is pretty excellent - I very seldom ran into unplayable situations, and even sometimes when it seems that you are stuck, there is a "pray" option that will resolve most blockages, although you will only have a few opportunities to use it per run without heavy penalties. But I rarely ever needed it, so that's no problem.
The single-eyed characters make the top down combat easy to understand. Sneaking is available, although it's been nerfed somewhat, but that is generally not a problem, except when you start as "The Fool". It is probably my only gripe with the game that the Fool doesn't start with a stealth +1 cloak.
Speaking of variety, you can play as 1 of at least 9 classes in the game, there are at least 16 different kinds of enemies, most of which have at least 1 type of boss version which serves as mini bosses, of which you'll only ever encounter 4 at most per run, there are at least 5 types of Dragons which serves as the end boss (except in rogue-likes it seems that the final boss is never the final boss, is it?), there are a variety of weapons (and magic) to use, lots of potions and scrolls, not all with positive effects, etc.
And all that is before you ever even get to the free DLC - none of which I have touched as yet. In short, if you enjoy a good rogue-like ARPG, I can heartily recommend Unexplored.

Proc-gen success based on luck rarely feels rewarding no matter which way the dice land.
A great game with a few critical bugs. If you've played the roguelike Brogue this will feel very familiar to you. I cannot fathom how they took this incredible concept and threw it in the trash for the sequel. If they added more fleshed out gods like in DC:SS and added magic casting they'd have a huge seller. This game, the original, could have been a huge seller too, but there are many design flaws and crashes.
The game's just OK. Battle is unintuitive but interesting, the layouts only sometimes have you exploring over 50% of the map, and the graphics + sounds are unique and interesting but not appropriate for this format. Difficulty is a bit nonsensical and, how do I put this, stale? Like there's very little pacing, but it also has that good randomness vibe. Weapons seem boring and flat. It's worth picking up if you are interested in a slightly new take on the genre or want a good time waster, but for everyone else, it's probably better to keep looking. But if this was made by a solo game dev, I have to say it's good. It's just not worth the price point imo.

yes, unExplored is 8 years old by now and the procedurally generated dungeons are still quite impressive. My first couple of runs that made it around halfway into the dungeon I felt a sense of genuine magic. These kinds of games are always best when you dont yet know how far the rabbit hole goes.
on further replays i do feel the puzzles especially get a bit repetitive. Also the level generation can still cause some stupidness like a locked room and the only lever to open it is inside that same room with no other way to access it. Ive never seen this happen on the critical path though.
Still, usually the dungeon levels are good, sometimes fantastic.
+ Real Emergent Gameplay with many Tactical Options +
Thisss is the best part of the game for sure. I guess you could say this about any game but unexplored is a game about problem solving and with all the interesting interactions between enemies, the environment, spells, potions and scrolls you have a good amount of tools for getting yourself out of a pickle. Throwing harmful potions into a swarm of enemies that have cornered you, casting disarm on an ogre and beating it to death with its own club, finding a corner to hide and perform a critical sneak attack on a boss that is chasing you. This is what its all about in my eyes.
+ Intense, Real-time, Dual Wielding Melee Combat +
the combat has a surprising amount of depth. it is also fun! Healing is scarce so your mistakes have consequences. you have to weigh the pros of cons of running into enemies or going for a risky swing. some enemies are immune to certain damage types and weapons have different attack speeds, ranges, swings and stats so you have a lot of reason to use different weapons and switch between them in combat instead of using the one sword with optimal stats or something
Stealth Mechanics (dungeon crawling like a real rogue…)
stealth mechanics are simple but cool. I dont think a full stealth build is feasible though... I wish daggers got an extra bonus on sneak attacks.
Over 50 dangerous bosses
The bosses are... okay? They are usually a slightly stronger enemy with a gimmick ability.
Challenging, generated puzzles.
mmm, no. The puzzles are kind of ass. You find notes that say "go to a room and do a thing". You do the thing and if you did it right you get a reward. Thats it for the most part. I guess opening doors can kinda also be considered a puzzle because you have to weigh down pressure plates or drag a wind generator to a thingy but most of the puzzles in this game are only cool once.

Years later, I still think about this game a lot. It has a lot of clever aspects and it feels unlike any other game out there.
A great sense of exploration, challenge, learning the game's mechanics and mysteries is satisfying, exploring the levels all feel quiet immersive, the random generation is well done.
Excellent dungeon crawler with optional extra puzzles or bosses... not sure why you're an orange cyclops, but here we are.
A tightly designed roguelite that only some people will love.
Weapons and enemies are tightly balanced, early success/difficulty depends heavily on learning the game mechanics rather than luck, and the game rewards exploring.
But there's near zero variety in abilities and weapons in every run, and it's very "low fantasy" meaning super powers / magic are very limited.
If you want a super dry, tightly designed and mechanically rewarding roguelite this is a superb game.
If you want something with fast (or even medium) paced combat where you can play around with character builds and experience diverse ability and gear combos, this game is not for you at all.
It's tough giving this a thumbs down but the game is so limited in run variety that I think only a small subset of roguelite fans will enjoy this game. Thus I really can't recommend this game.

・杖,ポーション,一部の装備は効果が不明で判別していく必要がある(伝統的ローグライクでよくあるシステム)。昨今のゲームでは廃れた要素なので人を選ぶかもしれない。呪われた装備は外せないので、場合によっては大変な目に遭う
・道具を組み合わせる"調合",供え物と道具等を交換する"祭壇",装備と素材を合体させる"鍛造",詰まった時の"祈り"という要素がある。これらの要素もそうだが基本的にどの要素も、落ちている本から部分的に情報収集して後は手探り。この辺りの伝統的ローグライクのやり方は人を選ぶかもしれない。easyモードであればこれらをそこまで上手に使いこなせなくてもクリアできるので、やりながらゆっくり覚えればいい
・死んだ時の所持金や持ち帰った金品を使って、1回限りの装備や道具が買える。気楽に無料装備で稼ぐ、ガチガチに準備をして生還を目指すといったプレイスタイルを好きに選べるし、難易度を調整できる。ゲームが難しいと思ったら、とりあえず回復をたくさん持ち込めばいい
・レベル上げ要素はほぼない。実績を達成することで職業(最初の初期状態)が開放されたり、店の品揃えが良くなる
・元祖ローグと同じように、ダンジョンから帰ってくるまでがゴール。一度通った道を帰るわけだが、スルーした敵が残っていたり、新たな脅威と向き合う必要がある

・謎解きのヒントを見つけることができるが、どの部屋のことか分からない。試行回数は有限なので解けないことも多い。単に自分の実力や英語能力の不足かもしれないが…
・少しでも謎解きの成功率を上げるために色んな階層を行ったり来たりする時はあまり面白くない
・多少異なる初期状態でゲームを開始できるが、大体やることは似ている
・見つけるメモに書かれた内容がダンジョンに反映されていないことがたまにある
・ゲームを中断して時間が空くと謎解きや迷宮のヒントの記憶が薄れて、ゲーム内のメモを参照して補完する必要があるが面倒になって一からやり直しすることになる

Great procedural generation, vast amount of items.
This game has a lot of the classic elements of an action roguelike: randomized unidentified potions and scrolls, curses, traps, secrets, character classes... or so it seems, since the classes are locked behind achievements, and for some reasons the achievements are not unlocking properly. The end result is that much of the game's content is unreachable for me, which ruins an otherwise interesting game.
Game looks awesome but holy smokes controling your character is like playing air hockey with chopsticks and feels BAD. Hard, hard pass.

The best real time traditional roguelike, for people who hate grid movement like me. The combat, art style and atmosphere are all amazing. It's so satisfying to charge, strike, and see enemies spinning around

具体的には死亡時に所有していた金と実績による解放要素で、実績解除がキャラクターやゲーム開始時のアイテムの解除と行ったかんじかな。
もちろんノーアイテムノー装備で挑むキャラ(fool)がいるので引き継ぎなんてぬるいよって人はそれでもよし。
難易度は3段階、ローグライクアクション好きでもミドルをクリアするのはなかなか大変。
アイテムの鑑定や未鑑定アイテムの名前付けといった要素あり、環境を利用した戦いあり（松明を草むらになげて火災など）、敵の種類もたくさん（いまだに初見の敵がいる）という部分で内容面は問題なし。
ローグライクアクションが好きなら買いです。

It has an impressive dungeon generation system, that being said, it is very, very punishing even on casual mode since everything is up to the RNG gods.
I mean, sure, you can get good in this game, but it will take many, many attempts to even start trying to guess what the game might throw at you and plan ahead accordingly, I have a life and don't have such time to invest in just one game.
If you like a game that might spawn three powerful fire monsters that expel blinding smoke every time you hit them and that when you kill them they explore with fire in a forest that catches on fire and there's not a clear spot anywhere RIGHT AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE DUNGEON BEFORE YOU OPEN THE FIRST DOOR then this game might be for you, otherwise, stay clear.
Kind of hard and good for playing in short bursts. Like a side job, not the main game to play. may be during updates or if something is being installed. Gets frustrating in the long run. Once in 9 hours I got a bug that made me stuck inside a room without any means to get out, was only able to get out because I had a descent scroll which is a bad way to get down floors.

Puzzles and monster cluing and the placement of bosses, loot and dungeon features ... It usually always allows for non-linear traversals.
I used to only do "desolate" runs which means very little monsters and same for items but that was punishingly hard. Once the update/fixes continuation by Elias finally also saw a Linux build I had to switch over to a more sane "challenging" setting (because "casual" I really did not want) because desolate in that build is actually arcade mode (a new bug). With the beta branches feature you can choose which version you want to play, though.
See with the content offered, unlocks and challenges to tackle and secrets to uncover and all the free DLC content which I did not even check out any of yet, you will find lots to explore here.
You can also choose your difficulty. The game is hence very accessible.
Cannot recommend it enough for its price if you think you might like it.
THE most rogue like rogue-lite
It's a simple looking but surprisingly deep dungeon diver, Give it a try and don't trust the elves!
Gave this game a solid try it is unforgiving and hard. Feels like your on an air hockey table gliding around. They start you off with an annoying 1/4 inch long Dagger so you are sliding around trying to hit with this little annoying weapon.... i finally get a run going and get a dungeon that is just dead ends and broken due to poor generation. Even on easy mode, no puzzles or bosses i still get puzzles and whooped. I reread some reviews and feel like i must be missing something so i torture myself more and i finally figured it out the game is just not for me AT ALL. It requires skills and patience I'am just not willing to invest with all the other options i would avoid this game.

Seems like a really fun game. Unfortunately saves don't work properly and the game crashes at the end of every run when you die, so no progress can be made.
A modern classic. A true ARPG roguelike.
Not sure if its just that all the positive reviews are older, but I didn't find anything impressive about this game. The combat doesn't feel very fun. The level generation is okay, but nothing special. The only part that was really interesting to me was the books that hinted at where secret items were placed. After a few playthroughs I didn't feel like coming back.

I get that it shouldn't be an easy dungeon procedural game but this was unnecessarily hard in early levels. Even the tutorial was short and didn't explain a lot of what you run into on the FIRST level. I would often find myself with potions and scrolls but no weapon when running into the first mobs. I gave it a good try but I think this just isn't for me.

Maybe this game hasn't aged well but I can't get past the crashing, bugs, and awkward interface.
Really, really good. You just need to look past the graphics to see a rich world of fun and games. It's also VERY hard.
I gave this game the ol' college try and I gotta say, I am massively disappointed and frankly puzzled by the positive reviews. This game is very amateurish, very "bare bones"-feeling, and frankly unfair. There seem to be some enemies where you can't exchange damage without taking damage yourself without throwing a dagger, picking it up, and continuing to circle strafe and plink with your dagger until they're dead, which is not fun. Most of the crates and other containers are empty, which makes me wonder why they're even there. The levels are pretty boring, too. I didn't see a lot of interesting puzzles.
I want to emphasize that this is just from about 45 minutes of playtime. It could be that after you slog through some hours of really mediocre gameplay, the game opens up and becomes more interesting. But in my opinion a good game should be enjoyable from the get-go. In my opinion, that is not this game.
Maybe the sequel is better?

Don't want to contradict all these impressed people, this looks like an impressive dungeon crawler. The level generation is the best feature in my view. Even so, wandering around on open plan levels is accompanied by inexplicable explosions that swiftly kill you. I simply wish to point out to potential purchasers that this game is much closer to Nethack than Isaac. The combat is a crappy sword and knife initially, and the keys for progress are inside the tough enemies. No way does it offer the same experience as Gungeon et al. It's more your tactical Rogue, and as that is probably one of the best around. Not for me - I should have read the blurb more closely. How can anybody enjoy the combat in this game? People are strange, when you're a stranger. . . .

This game is incredible. Is very accessible but still tough. Although it is a action game you can pause and choose and learn of the descripction of enemy and items. It like a roguelike Zelda. And feel unique. This game is underrated and is good, cheap and beatiful (ok the first time you see is ugly but step by step the game look incredible).

Perhaps the closest thing to a real-time traditional roguelike. There's definitely some skill to the combat, but you can pause to think your way through tactical situations. The procedural level generator is awesome!

I suck at this game
Idk, there is a lot of 'neat' stuff in this game but it's really not that fun to me. Having an bunch of not very useful loot to manage is tedious, especially with an annoying UI. Gathering a bunch of un-identified scrolls and potions feels like a very tired gameplay. The art style is very nice but it's so often difficult to understand what's what. And I just don't get how the puzzles work at all. A lot of notes refer to "a special hall" or something and I have no idea what that's supposed to look like.
The free dlc runs are a little better as they seem more focused but it's not enough to really change my mind. The Ripley one was fun since it was more action oriented but fighting the crawlers got old very fast.

Un excellent rogue lite. Pas mal de subtilités qu'on apprend petit à petit. Super générateur de niveaux, avec pour ne rien gâcher pas mal de thèmes, de secrets, d'interrupteurs cachés ... Ajoutez à cela un peu de craft, des dieux capricieux, de nombreuses potions et parchemins non identifiés, des mini boss et des ennemis parfois surprenants. Si vous aimez le genre, foncez !
TLDR; Fantastic game. A fun dungeon crawler that is designed like a traditional roguelike, but with the gameplay of an action roguelite. The game expects you to fail and learn by trial and error. If you dont mind starting over and learning from your mistakes its a good game.
Some good things I noted during play
+ The game really starts to open up and show you how much there is the more you play. It doesn't show you a menu that says 2/50 unlocked like a lot of other games. You go into a run, complete achievements, and earn new things to use on your next run. This may be additional items you can purchase at the start of your run or different loadouts to use. It's not much but the surprise factor was nice.
+ The character design is charming all around. The look and sounds of your main character are absolutely adorable. The little notes you can find in the game giving you some hints about the Boss you will face are nice as well. Its fun to read about how much the previous adventurers hated "The Bog Queen" and curse her name.
+ Combat can be very simple or more complex depending on how you want to play. You can either walk into an enemy and poke them (very little input for less output, I think this also recharges faster so its not inherently worse) or you can time a swing against an enemy for additional damage. Different weapon types with different reach, attach recharge time, and swing style allow for different playstyles. You can also use ranged weapons or magical staves to allow for some ranged options.
Some negative things I noted during play
- The game does repetitive since your main goal is to delve deeper into the dungeon.
- I have only found 2 types of puzzles and the game has the answer somewhere nearby or on another floor usually. The puzzles add a nice touch of spice, sometimes the juice isn't worth the squeeze.
- There are a lot of magical items and their effects are unknown to you unless you identity the item. Maybe I'm just unlucky, but 85% of my items were cursed. The times I did get a good enchanted item the effects were just a +1 to a stat so it didn't feel good to use. Yea a +1 to swordmanship is technically good, but I'd rather have a sword that emits light or has increased size/reach. There may be magical effects that do this, but I have not seen any as of yet.
Overall it's a SOLID game for only $10. It has way way way more content and replay ability than I thought it would. Only reason I am not playing it more is because I am going to play the second one. I found this game because of Unexplored 2 and was drawn to that game because of the focus on exploration. This is going to be my go to choice when I want a traditional dungeon crawling Rougelike though since I get bored of the turn based combat in ADOM, ToME, and Tangledeep after a bit.

I have played pc games for over 25 years now. And RPG was always my most favourite genre. I have played anything from hack and slash to tactical turn based, single player to MMO, text based to 3d graphics.... But this game just stands out a lot from everything else! It instantly got to my "one of the best RPGs ever played". It's just different in many ways from other games, but it is absolutely brilliant at it!
You will die a lot, but just start new game with new dungeon and it feels new, fresh and exciting again. It really doesn't feel like you have done it before and now need to repeat.
Environment is deadly and will probably kill you without even monster help.... But once you learn how to interact with it, you can even use it as your own weapon.
Combat is unique and brilliant. Dual wield ANYTHING with ANY class =). It's very quick and sharp. First tricky, but you gonna love it later =)
And the random generation is on very different level from most games! It's not like you have same walls, hazards and monsters every time just different layout. No no! Here everything is different every time! The game draws things from a big pool of possible options. SO even after 130 hours of gameplay I was encountering new items, mini bosses, etc...
It's trully mind blowing!
Please note, though. The game does have few bugs. But nothing major enough to stop me from enjoying it.

This game not only crashes too much and corrupts your save file but also makes descending the scummy way. In one dungeon i go down stairs and there are enemies in front of me... two times. Stair design does not let u go back unless u go out of 'stair area' to have pop up for going to the above level. One time it was a challenge but second time it was instant stun lock. Great game but there are things that are just not thought trough

This game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Had a great run, died scummy way. In this run alone game crashed 2 times but fortunately save wasn't corrupted so i could continue. Got my gold for the next run, i bought everything, click play.

The level generation is some of the greatest I've ever seen, if not the best. Every run is a totally unique experience, Dungeons are unpredictable and you never know what each level will be like.
This is the closest thing in existence to a "real time traditional roguelike". This concept is beautifully executed and I can't imagine it being done any better, the gameplay is just as deep and engaging as ever. Just about all of the classic mechanics are here and little is lost in the transition to real time, the combat is simple to understand, fun, and responsive.
Please check this out, it deserves more exposure and has a sequel in development
A great game! It is a real-time game, but it plays very much like a traditional roguelike, in the style of Brogue. The way it procedurally generates its quests (graph grammar-based system) is also quite amazing. Definitely worth to play!
Since there is a box "check if received for free", full disclosure: I have received Unexplored from the dev (by means of a key exchange) -- IMO that does not count as "for free" but someone may think otherwise.

Great game, but so full of bugs that I cannot recommend it, from crashing to getting your run stuck. Even more infuriating is that there's Unexplored 2 while this one breaks so often.
Play it if you get it for free or like super cheap, don't pay full price for a broken game.
Unexplored is unforgiving but unforgettable.
Uncover the mysteries of the procedurally generated levels, avoid the traps and fight your way throught hordes of deadly foes.
The combat is atypic but well made, and dancing around enemies while swinging your blades quickly becomes a second nature. Unless you prefere the use of magic or range weapons.
If you like action rogue-lite, this one is unique, and ultimately one of the best.

Good little game.
A very rogueliky roguelike which doesn't hold back on you in medium difficulty.
The game is pretty solid and so far I have been loving that when you encounter a big enemy (or several small ones) you are thinking you are doomed, not that you are going to be rich with loot. When you find something good it is a great joy because of that, the hardships of the way are real.
Probably is not for everyone, the game is not so fast (but it is intense and you can save and leave) and there are a number of frustrating mecanics, cursed items and everything so unendified. So be ready to deal with that.
Graphics are as you can see on the images and that's the best part. Can't super graphic your game? Ok, focus on the rest and do the best you can with what you have, and so far I really love these graphics, even when I know I killed a goblin because I'm reading it (dunno, could have been a troll or an orc or a human or whatever which seemed humanoid).
Got it on sale and it seems a great deal, makes me want to have Unexplored 2 on the radar.

Couple more hours now. I can say I like the game a lot more now, the sense of dread and acomplishment is real. You want to play a game were you see any enemy and feel he can really hurt you if you are not careful? Want to play a game were you find a sword with an earth incantation and it makes you feel a great deal of joy? This is it.
BUT it can also get very frustrating. Game likes to put you on bad situtations were you can burn fast the resources that you have been carefully saving. This is ok, but the game can SUCK sometimes when it's doing this.
Example: I'm in the fiery level of supahotlava death and there is a bridge over a lava chasm. The bridge looks like it will fall, I step on it, it shakes and I go back, as I don't want to go to the other side and maybe get stuck.
I have doomed my best run to this day >: (
All the other places were I can go can't provide two keys that I NEED to progress (not the case in all runs) the only exit unchecked is the one on the other side of the chasm. Can't get there, I have burned through most of my resources and there is nothing I can do.
SO frustrating, I was doing so well, I had so much equipment.
Ok. I think you can pray or something if you get stuck, but I have read about that afterwards, and anyhow... the Gods of this game are the funny type, tjem, I don't want to spoil anything but praying in the other side of the chasm didn't seemed like something I wanted to do.
Nuff writing. Still recommended but it's not for everyone and can frustrate you. If you love it you might LOVE it.

Yes, last time. Final veredict. If this is the game for you it can be VERY good. Like it or not, the game has VERY FRUSTRATING moments.

Exploration and discovery are what make games fun for me, and Unexplored does not do this in an enjoyable way even though that is the only aspect it is trying to achieve (instead of graphics, storytelling, action, etc).
The design of this game forces the player to gain knowledge to have success, which is standard for many games, but this knowledge is usually acquired through failure, also a fine thing, but when paired with randomness that leads to punishing the player that trial and failure becomes very frustrating.
There are many mechanics that are not shown at all (digging, stealing, crafting, cooking, brewing to name a few glaring ones) and even frequent actions like using vs throwing a potion are not intuitive.
This combination of design choices means a player is meant to try and fail for hours, or if that is not something you think is enjoyable you can look up guides which I have done and it has not increased my enjoyment because even with the knowledge of what to do and how to interact with the game's mechanics there is still randomness incorporated into so many elements that even safe and methodical play does not lead to success.
For example identifying scrolls and potions is a core mechanic of each run, and you can either use an extremely rare identify scroll (which you have to use to know you have it) or use the scroll or potion, which can have negative effects. Even on the steam discussions the developer responded to how to identify potions with ""click on it and see what happens to get a better grasp of the game"" ok let me drink this potion it's a potion of explosion and now I'm dead that sure was a good time.
You are lucky to get an identify scroll but there are 18 types of potions so using them is the intended way to discover their effects, but 10 of those 18 are negative effects. Also enchanted weapons and armor require identification to avoid equipping and being locked into cursed items, so if you equip a bow that ends up being cursed with -3 health every time you shoot your run is just done.
Alternatively you can disregard potions/scrolls/enchanted items, which is why I am leaving this review as negative, because that's how I feel about the entire game: it is designed in a way that I would rather just not interact with it.
I still uncertain on if there are persistent buffs, such as being able to use gold to buy more/better items before a run, but since there are multiple difficulties and I could not beat the game on casual I can only assume that there is a system that I have just not unlocked or googled how to use yet...
I experienced a few bugs and game crashes, then corrupted saves after the game crashes so RIP that run. There is a ton of screen tearing even though vsync is on, which I have never seen screen tearing on a non-3D game...
Unexplored 2 is what caught my eye but it has been on my wishlist for years now I thought I could at least check out the first game; needless to say I will be waiting for some reviews to see how much of the frustrations from this game carry over before trying it.
I LOVE Unexplored! My only wish was that Devs might add a little bit more secret sauce to the endgame content. The fact that weapons can basically only be enchanted one type to +5 for example felt like such a limiting thing, as did the extremely spartan gear slots and attributes. I get that they were aiming for fewer itemization choices with greater individual impact and a generally greater focus on actually playing the game and interacting with mechanics rather than wasting time stuck in menus or pondering gear or build choices, but I still just feel like the late game content was too lacking in diversity or interest for this to ever be considered up there with one of the truly greats of this genre.
As it stands, despite the fact I can't honestly quite say that I think Unexplored is an all time great, but I still highly recommend it, and it's one of my favourites in years just for its conceptual creativity and masterful execution. Unexplored is the only title I have ever encountered that is real time yet still feels genuinely worthy of association with the roguelike descriptor. Every other so-called "action roguelike" or "real time roguelike" I have encountered has played like some sort of top-down action game or twin stick shooter and we already have the term "roguelite" to describe such games.
Gungeon, Isaac, and so on are all excellent titles while in their element and I respect their developers (although some of the latter slop clones not so much), but nevertheless I want their style of content kept clearly separate conceptually from the bona fide roguelike, because they really are two quite different styles. Unexplored, however, is a title I make an exception for, because it's one title that isn't just an action game that borrowed a few elements from the roguelike genre, it's genuinely a true roguelike experience at its core, just made real time, and there's a world of difference between an action game with roguelike elements and a roguelike with real time gameplay.
So why do I say that this has genuine roguelike DNA while others just have "elements". It all comes down to the fundamentals of how the game "feels" to play. Unexplored achieves those nail-biting will I die / won't I die moments, the true RNG madness where you both die and win the world for no truly fair reason, and of course that wonderful series of moments rushing to the finish / surface / ending with the object of Yendor in hand, Indiana Jones style dungeon cave in happening rapidly behind you. These core roguelike experience qualities were all part of Unexplored and done so very well to boot, and this recreation of the core genre charm and zany randomness and unique moments all make Unexplored a bona fide roguelike experience in a way that Gungeon or Isaac or many similar titles are not.
My only wish is that they made the end game content just before the final escape a little bit richer, got the basics done right with a little more reliability, and put the effort in to make a denser pool of content with the philosophy that "players shouldn't be seeing the same thing twice until they've played several runs". Instead, there are all the hallmarks of things being rushed out just a little bit too quickly, there is that all too common indication that somewhere along the line, passion project turned into "let's just get this thing shipped", presumably because their team was just that little bit too small to really get the game done exactly as it was crying out to be completed.
I believe this game could have gone down in history as one of the best games of all time "to those in the know" (same way as any trad rogue like) had they done this, but because they did not, I think that all told Unexplored exists in a twilight zone just between a valiant development effort that tried hard but didn't quite pull things off and genuine greatness. I don't really feel right describing it as sitting comfortably in either of these two camps, it straddles both, achieving the feeling of one in some moments, and the other in different moments.
When it comes to this greatness-fail paradox, let's talk examples. The dungeon contains riddles and puzzles and secrets that are just wonderful. They feel so very much fun to discover and work out, and you're always excited to win some extra loot because roguelike scarcity has been done just right, *chefs kiss* levels of scarcity perfection. But then you've discovered all of these little nuggets of game play fun by type before long, perhaps even just a few floors in... If ONLY they'd simply made a few more different "types" of them! If ONLY the Devs had implemented just a few more novel non-combat interactions, a few more magic enchanting types, a few more weapon options, a few more enemy types, a few more secrets and most of all just a few more dungeon puzzles, it would have reached a different level.
This is where the most disappointing part of this story must be said. Given the reality that I LOVED this game but saw it as just being a few hundred more hours of pain and passion away from true greatness and the opportunity to claim a spot in gaming history alongside ToME or ADoM, I had hoped that Unexplored 2 would remedy the content shortcomings and bumpy pacing of Unexplored 1 and produce that final work of art that Unexplored was always crying out to be. Instead, they took Unexplored 2 in a completely different direction and I can't pretend it was anything other than a huge letdown for me. I hope that one day I might get the chance to play some sort of Unexplored 1 - Part 2 made by either the original devs or some skilled modders who can finally bring this title to the final form that my head always dreamed that it could be, but until that time, it's still definitely a title that's worth picking up and playing.
If you have less than 10 hours in this I find it hard to believe you actually engaged with the game on its level. This a hard roguelike with a lot going for it - the generation is well put together and levels typically flow nicely. There are enough unique artifacts/enemies/bosses/rooms that I'm still finding new stuff with 2-3 dozen runs under my belt. There may be a few mechanics you are unaware of at first which you *need* to know about in order to progress, but you also have the option if you are genuinely stuck at praying near a door for it to open. The game has a pause system that you *should* be using when things hit the fan (this is very similar to people complaining about unfairness in FTL when there is almost always a way out of a problem). Everything is a puzzle- how do I fight this enemy, what are they weak to, *should* I fight this enemy? In terms of game knowledge to be successful, there is a lot you will need to pick up and some things you might not learn in 100-300 hours of playtime- the way I enjoyed and would tepidly recommend is go in blind, get a dozen or so good runs under your belt, and look up some things if you feel like you are grinding your wheels or a winning run would be dashed because you didn't know something ( I did this when I didn't want to lose a run not knowing the 50+ ways you can enchant gear for wildly different results, for example). Like most roguelikes, there are some levels that are just nasty or scenarios that are rather unfair (entering a new floor and immediately getting pelted with a potion, for example). Every death I've had however has been a learning experience in realizing choices I could have made to survive, damage is *usually* fairly low and you can almost always back out of engagements or reassess your approach.
The progression system is also fun, achievements are tied directly into more supplies and unlocking characters and I look forward to playing more on hard to permanently improve their loadouts. The most major criticism I have for this game is you are incentivized to backtrack A LOT to get the most out of the floors, and if you have a low tolerance for this it's a good reason to avoid the game. It's the sort of game I enjoy playing with some other media to watch on the boring bits.

This game is shoulder-shrug central for me, and I feel lukewarm about it.
Not much to say. I like the unique, directional combat and the care that went into the AI's adaptive behavior (eg, they will react depending on if you're facing them, or if your weapon is better than theirs, etc.). On the other hand, I find the dungeon generation and puzzles really bland. After every death, starting a new game was a chore since I was in for the same cycle of walking around aimlessly, hitting switches, and then back-tracking to find newly-opened doors.
There's too many other, better roguelikes out there, so I feel no need to ever touch this again.
