Unending Galaxy is an older game from 2016. It's a venerable 9 years old at the time of this review.
And wow, doesn't it look promising? A hybrid 4X and Asteroids/SpaceWar! game with a feature list that makes Star Control look like Space Invaders. Unfortunately it's a broken promise, maybe a case of the developers biting off way more than they can chew. And the technical implmentation isn't so great either.. this doesn't look much better than the (completely free) Star Control 2 Remaster (The Ur-Quan Masters).
Unfortunately bad looks are just the tip of the iceberg. Let's get into why this failed.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
It's apparent that little to no testing for the game was done, at least on modern gaming PCs. In fullscreen, the game doesn't display properly, with the game area drawn outside the viewable space. This is caused by the developer not bothering to ensure the game works on resolutions over 1080p, with very high resolution monitors that use resolution scaling. Because the game area is not drawn correctly, it doesn't map to the mouse pointer properly, so the game itself simply cannot be played in fullscreen mode. Gamers shouldn't be forced to accept defective products just because developers don't bother with basic testing on PC.
From my experience with the game, it's somewhat bug riddled and has design/implementation/stability problems that will render this unplayable for many gamers. Beyond just the game breaking rendering/DPI failure, the UI and general gameplay are infested with bugs and lack of polish. Sometimes things just won't work when you expect them to... This is an exercise in frustration that you could probably afford to skip.
While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
The game features somewhat lazy, simplistic "retro" looking 2D graphics, and it's hard to say if this is due to the age of the assets used, if it's a deliberate attempt for the game to look bad/retro on purpose, or if the assets are just, well, terrible looking. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game in 2025, such poor quality 2D graphics in the 3D era just aren't good enough, whether it's a deliberate design fault on behalf of the developer or they just couldn't manage to do any better, this is a compromise gamers shouldn't have to put up with.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 110,000+ games on Steam?
Unending Galaxy has the utterly unrealistic price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "Deus Ex: Human Revolution", "Metro Last Light" or "Metro 2033". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.

По духу напоминает Warzone 2100, но с негативной помесью Endless Sky. Играть можно разве в совсем старые версии, Deluxe перебалансирован настолько, что своим флотом играть просто нереально. Чтобы что-то путное сделать, помимо всех нижеописанных проблем, нужно сидеть неделями, вкуривая что сделал не так. Со старой версией было проще, три дня, и я уже отстроил себе приличный флот, хоть конечно и не без потерь. Лучше пойду играть в старую версию, там реально можно отдохнуть.
A 4K space sim with modding. I have never heard of a space-based 4k where you start your empire with one ship. Sounds very promising. Upgrade your ship. Build a fleet. Build space stations. There is a lot here which can be a bit overwhelming.
It's a pretty good game. The idea is fantastic and the execution is decent. The AI deserves some credit as well. Unfortunately the game doesn't seem to have made it past QA, as there are a number of very common bugs that keep recurring. Other reviews seem to tell the same story. Here's to hoping that there'll be a better sequel one day.
Love this game! It has a bit of a learning curve like any other X series related game but stick with it and as usual, you won't regret it!
The Tutorial is your best friend, without it, the game can be very confusing!

The dev is working on some rimworld fallout game and I wish him luck. I even bought the other game to support because I like his thinking in terms of games.
It's a cheap, affordable space game with X3/X4 mechanics and maybe even superior in some aspects minus the graphics. MADE BY A SINGLE GUY. X4: Foundations had a full team and the AI in this game is more competent lul.
People need to realise Indie games have limited resources and cannot offer what big studios can in terms of polish.
But what Indie games CAN DO is come up with innovative game mechanics without the corpo ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nowadays that is way too common in the gaming industry.
Very promising game, left for dead by a developer like so many others on steam, the bugs, incomplete systems, lack of information, and the developer has directly stated there will be no more updates. DO NOT BUY.
I enjoyed playing the game. However, due to its bugs, I just can't recommend the game. The bugs don't make the game unplayable, but present themselves enough to where immersion is broken quite often. Some a critical - like a save game getting corrupted. Some are minor - like user interface not working under specific circumstances. Others are immersion breaking - like warp gates not observing the restrictions you place on them (in your own captured sectors).
I idea behind the game is awesome, but the game isn't finished. The developer had to cease production on the game due complications with the provider of the coding platform...forced abandonment - at least, this is what people on the discussion board are saying. So, the bugs aren't going to fixed. So, sadly - I have to give it thumbs down.
This game is fun at start, but it gets exceptionally frustrating at endgame. At the point when you have sturdy empire with 2-3 solar systems, it becomes overwhelming as hell. Ships ignore your command on battlefield, or - if you change ship settings - you should give order for every ship. Builders dont create efficient production lines, so you should direct em manually, which is overwhelming too. If your ship has bounty, bounty hunters will attack it; if you fight back, local military will be pissed - you wanted to move your army through friendly sector? well, you can do that, with literal obliteration of sector and relationships with its owner. You in war? then your enemy will call for help literally half of the galaxy, but because of bug you cant do the same. You ended war? then enemy ships wouldnt acnowledge it, because truce catched them in middle of fight. Builders of other empires annoying as ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, because they claim your sectors by building military stantions in every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sector, because you cant do same because of really slow income. I mean, seriously, you can have 2-3 solar systems with efficiently tuned production lines, but still have income like nothing at hour, while you can go sleep or do something much more productive and fun, than play that game.
I give it to autor, he putted effort in this game, but endgame is WEAK. I dropped that game 2 or 3 times, tryed it again and again, but still I get frustrated faster, than achieve my final goals. This is just sad.

НО !! В последней версии игры после начала новой игры и последующей загрузки сохранения, навсегда пропадает звук выстрелов, как играть не представляю вообще, как так можно криво выпустить патч я тоже не знаю такое вообще в первый раз встречаю, а повидал немало.

I've been playing this game for a year or two, now, and I would say that this is a fun but excusably flawed game. If you like long run, top down space shooters with a 4X element, then you will probably like this game. It's forever under development and there's no indication that it will ever be finished, so this is pretty much the finished product. It is, however, open source, so you can mod it to your heart's content. There are already some pretty decent mods, so yeah, I'd say go for it. I've never been dissatisfied with this purchase.
If you like X3 and Distant worlds, this is for you.

If you like being angry, play this game, because the UI is the most frustrating experience I've ever had since I tried to play dwarf fortress. The tutorial was frustrating to read, only covered a tiny fraction of the most basic controls, and actually made it harder to understand those basic controls.
The regular game was no better, when I tried to play it.
I was surprised as just how much negative fun I had in such a short amount of time. I deeply regret giving this game a chance.
Don't make my same mistake, read the description, and assume you are going to have a pleasant, or at least bearable experience.

SUPER GEM OF STRATEGY AND BUILDING....
挺好的一个游戏，一款2D的4X游戏其实挺罕见的，该有的都有，当然精细度上比不上大游戏，不过这也使得它在复杂度和上手性方面平衡的不错，既不会烧脑也不会太无趣。
虽然是英语，但不难不多，也没有需要听力考试的地方，都是文字，而且游戏也能暂停。
有一些小毛病，但是不影响总体感受，本来玩的挺开心的，直到我发现了一个非常令人难受的bug，具体细节不说了，你可以理解为存档读档会导致“银河系经济崩溃”……显然，这已经不是单纯的“忍受”可以处理的，是对4X游戏乐趣的剥夺……
最可惜的是，根据社区所反映的情况，这个游戏应该已经停止更新了，因为它是由一门很偏僻的编程语言写的，而这款语言正在为了活命而对使用者漫天要价，游戏制作方不可能为了进行几次更新而支付高价的使用费。

Buggy.
Really wanted to like this game and tried for hours to get this game to not bug out constantly. I really like this game but because the dev has abandoned it and no longer fixing the bugs I have to say to stay away from it.
Bugs include crashing, glitched menus, glitched sound, glitched gameplay. Not worth the frustration trying to get the game to work. If the game was not so buggy I would recommend. Go buy AI WAR 2 instead.
A fun little game this is, a bit clunky but it hits the right spots for me. Some of the big ideas here is that you can pilot a single ship in manual mode or a fleet in RTS mode. There are several starts and races to chose from, so maybe starting as a trader with a freighter and a body guard isn’t the life for you? maybe piracy is. Though, nothing new here.
What does draw me in is that I can help and ally with factions and even crate my own to complete with them on an empire scale level. Sometimes I'd rather stick with bounty hunting for my respective allied faction, as long as I don't take too much of a high risk I'm usually fine.
A foot note eh? Well I recommend this because it's fun. I can jump between any of my ships and go on about their businesses. I like to help or hinder AI faction empires and tip power in their favors. This lets me do that.

A tiny tutorial that basically explains nothing except how to fly.
1st launch of game it crashed.
2nd launch, the controls were non-responsive.
3rd launch, thru the game launcher, this was a mistake, I could change the setting but not apply anything or exit.
4th launch, managed to get the the ship to fly around and that was about it.

This is an interesting and lightweight variation on the "Elite" theme, with some simplification to it.
Unfortunately, it's just really badly developed. There are tons of issues in the UI - where choosing something from a dropdown list isn't registered, like buying ship chassis. You could choose one, then click Buy, but you bought a different ship than you had selected. You choose a ship, choose a gear loadout and the ship changes.
The AI modules have tons of issues, where ships will just randomly sit and do nothing after modules are assigned, or will suicide into pirate or hostile sectors. I realize it's a solo dev, but at the same time, get a friend or someone to test the game. At this patch and build level, some of these issues are just silly to still have.
It ended all to soon.
Not even getting past the tutorial before getting frustraited the game is astonishinglty lackluster. The tutorial and further gameplay is surprisingly lax in direction or feel for accomplishment. You can figure out that you are going to be trading with people but this is not explained or even well detailed. Combat for what I saw was slow and unnuanced with what appeared to be a single fire button, I did not manage to play long enough to buy fleets, nor did I even know how that eould occur or what the impact might be. I found out how trade missions work and got a few reputation points. i played the whole thing from the map mode which ruins the immersion that much more.
It plays and feels like a game that comes from the end of the DOS era, so for retro gamers this is good. This may be good if you have an elementry child that wants to get into strategy games but does not sell me as something that a serious or even casual player will enjoy.
It's awful. Play X3/4 or SPAZ instead.

Hard game to grasp and not much to do, AI seems capable of building your empire for you. Dull, Not worth it even for the cheap price.
Get missions with remaining time 7 seconds. Find a mission to bring X item. First mission I picked up wanted me to buy crystals from somewhere and bring them there. In over an hour of playing never found anyone or anything selling crystals. Get 2nd mission buy energy cells, lots of them. Start ferrying them, no indication of mission progress.
Pickup a pirate bounty, go kill a pirate. Kill 2 pirates. Have a swam of them chase you across the entire multi-system map. Through warp gates, hyper jumps, impulse speed. Federation ships and all other ships completely ignore those pirates even in their own systems (labeled as having a security force present).
Open game up to check out other issues. Check control settings... the window stays up while it is minimized and I'm typing in the review.
Holy crap the automation and sandbox seems to have a ton of potential but the game seems horribly unpolished, the combat is well beyond twitch capability and shields are super weak. No detail on differences in weapons, no real variety to shielding. No ship upgrades outside of weapons and shields. I really wanted this to be the Escape Velocity itch filler, but no way.
It's a neat idea, but it's too buggy/incomplete. Issues I have encountered:
1.) When someone goes to war against me, they can call every other power to help them. But when I try to do it, they ask for 500,000 credits, which I have, but the game says I don't have enough credits. So I always have to fight alone.
2.) Access violation crashes.
3.) I select blacklist pirate sectors for my traders, but they seem to like to go there anyway. Or they go to pirate stations, with pirates nearby, and get killed. There is no way to tell them to bug out and avoid pirates. So they die all the time.
4.) Warp gate policies mean nothing and do nothing. Close warp gates to anyone but allies? Anyone can still use it. Close warp gates? Anyone can still use it.
5.) Diplomacy issues. It is very easy to upset people, simply by building next to them, but making friends is practically impossible. And the more you are next to someone, the angrier they are, even if they are building stations in your territory without issue. You would think at least if you had strong economic/trading ties with a faction they would appreciate you as you are driving their economy, but they don't care.
6.) Pirates. Sometimes they attack traders. Sometimes they just sit in a sector doing nothing whatsoever. I can only imagine they are sleeping or something.
7.) Every war declaration seems to end up as a galactic war with everyone declaring war against me to help the one jerk they didn't like to begin with. Even the people who were friendly with me, with massive economic ties, will still go to war with me.
8.) No connection between doing missions for a faction and their diplomatic feelings towards you. You can go around and destroy every pirate station in their territory, and they won't like you any more.
There is more I am forgetting. I have played quite a while. The game is a good idea.But there are too many issues, bugs, and after a while it just becomes frustration rather than entertainment. The execution just isn't there.
Shows some good potential. But the developer has a lot more work to do to clean up the bugs around it. Example: I just took a job to deliver 500 energy units (Batteries) for 22 credit each. I purchased each energy unit for 10 credits a piece. The job was suppose to pay 11,000 credits, or 22 credits per unit. I get the energy units and take them to the buyer. The buyer then offers 9 credits per battery. I end up wandering back and forth with 500 energy units, trying to sell them at a profit, or close to cost so that I either minimize my loss, or make a profit somewhere else. And this happened 3 times during my 4 hour gameplay. There's still a lot of work to be done to make this game good. Otherwise, I recommend you spend your hard earned money elsewhere. This game will leave you frustrated after awhile. Not worth it yet.
This is a great game if you enjoyed the trading, building, industry, and fleet management aspects of the X:subtitle series. It improves on all those aspects while giving you a top-down Escape Velocity interface to the game.
The interface is a little clunky, so you do spend a bit of time navigating menus. The map lacks the clever data-visualization that is found in Endless Sky, which is doubly challenging due to the added depth and complexity of the game's economy.
Overall though, this game is absolutely best-in-class for what it offers. If you want to build a merchant empire and wage trade wars against your rivals while waging actual wars to boost the price of your price of goods, this is the game for you.
Seltsamerweise hat es Unending Galaxy knapp zwei Jahre geschafft unter meinem Rader zu bleiben. Dabei verknüpft das Spiel sehr gekonnt einige meiner Lieblingsgenres. Eine wirklich unterhaltsame Weltraum Aufbausimulation - im Grunde X-Serie in 2D - kombiniert mit flotten Raumkampf a la Space Rangers.
Die nur durchschnittliche Gesamtwertung hier auf Steam wird dem Titel meiner Meinung nach nicht gerecht. Zwei Dinge werden meisten angeprangert:
Zum einem Bugs und häufige Abstürze. Dergleichen habe ich nach rund 10 Stunden Spielzeit jedoch nicht feststellen können. Ich hatte bislang nicht einen Absturz. Wahrscheinlich wurden diese schon längst behoben.
Andererseits wird bemängelt, dass Unending Galaxy nicht gerade Einsteigerfreundlich ist. Ja, das mag schon stimmen. Auch das Interface ist nicht ganz so stimmig. Aber beim Neueinstieg in die X-Serie ist anfangs ja auch etwas Hirnschmalz und Hartnäckigkeit erforderlich.
Anlehnungen an Egosoft`s X-Serie sind übrigens nicht nur rein zufällig, sondern durchaus gewünscht. So entstammt der Entwickler eigenen Angaben zufolge selbst der X-Modding Szene.
Die grafische Gestaltung ist durchaus ansehnlich. Das Universum ist voller Leben und die Fraktionen scheinen wirklich dynamisch in Bewegung zu sein. Fast alles man so kennt und von einer Weltraum Simulation erwartet ist dem Spieler möglich. Handeln, Kämpfen und Minern, ebenso wie das Aufstellen von Flotten, das Bauen von Werften und Fabriken bis hin dazu, eine eigene Fraktion/Nation zu gründen. Lediglich die Soundeffekte könnten besser sein.
Da aber schon zwei Jahre seit Release ins Land gegangen sind, erspare ich mir - und euch – weiteres langes Review Gefasel und empfehle kurzerhand jedem SciFi Fan das Teil anzuschaffen. Bei dem Preis ist es für Genreliebhaber sowieso ein „no-brainer“.

If you have the spare change to grab it and want to enjoy a game similar to X3 but 2D, well this is it. The game isn't particularly hard and there are some UI bugs like tooltips not disappearing when you stop mousing over them which causes some problems as well as a similar problem with dropdown menus. The game could use some extra tooltip information for partically all aspects of the game (perhaps a hint and tip system?). That all being said it's very fun and not really all that hard. I enjoy it and recommend it if you have the money to grab it on sale.

It's fun
It's a great game, It's similar to X3 but 2d when it comes to the empire management etc.
Ships can be automated without special software packages so in that sense it's a bit simpler but that plays out well for the design of the game. It's significantly complicated enough with managing your ships, trade etc.
I definitely recommend it. It gives you a more direct experience for a 4x game. There's a learning curve but stick with it and you'll enjoy building up your empire, managing your supply lines etc.

I "aquired" this game first, then liked it enough to buy it even though i didnt think it would get more updates. And it is getting more updates.
The simulation aspect and vairance of scale of the gameplay(you can be a solo pirate, or run a huge empire) is impressive, there are a lot of honestly quite trashy games like SPAZ that just throw completely independent systems at you and expect you to grind through them with each one being the same and having no interaction. This game while lacking polish has that element of a real world to it, and while neither it's basic gameplay or simulation is perfect, it entertained me for many hours.
one of the better 4x games out there currently. even though you have starting scenarios that give you a few ships a colony and a couple of million credits, i think the real jem here is the fact that you can litterly start from scrach just like in x3. and just like x series of games money is slow at start but soon youll have fleets of trading ships generating enough cash to start buying warships to combat the most immidiate threat that is pirates roaming about.
however' as soon as you build a station in orbit of an unclaimed world it becomes your colony and now the real fun starts as you get more cash to build bigger vessels, and enter the feuds of the big factions of the game.
overall, for 10 dollars its way better the other 4x games like polaris sector, stellaris, or dawn of andromeda that all of these to me represent a degradation of the 4x genre with way too much streamlining and avoidance of any real depth that might have made them stand out, while games like this and distant worlds that put effort on depth and complexity, manage to keep the genre alive and fresh.

Tbh the game IS NOT BAD.... But, its not good either.
There are very few ship classes, races usually fight late game with fleets of 5-15 ships apiece, the ships feel like paper, there is little variety in weapons, no way to upgrade armor or thrusters (that I know of), maps are kind of bland, there is no way to join an existing faction, growing your own faction is very tedious, etc. Tbh I could go on about the "almost bad", but let's get the good:
Very very close to the X3 games (think terran conflict 2d), sprites are very lovely (I realize he didn't make most of them, but that should not be an issue ever imho, if a sprite pack is open to use and it fits your style you want then why not use them?), weapon and shield effects are pretty solid, I enjoy the sound (everything), and tbh I feel like that sums up all my good feelings.....
To restate before THIS GAME IS NOT BAD, its just not good... And since there is no meh option, I am afraid I will give the thumbs down :/. Hopefully later down the line we will see an expanding to the base game in form of new ships, bigger battles, and less super fast paced combat. If that day comes I will more than happily give this game a thumbs up instead.

Alright, as many other people have said, this game is strikingly similar to the X series. That being said, I feel this game fills a niche on it's own. I know ten hours isn't alot, but I feel it's enough for me to give a positive review. Honestly I haven't written many reviews if any.
Do I think the game is perfect? No, there is plenty that could be improved.
Do I think the game is worth the price and worth playing? Yes, at times it can be a bit annoying having all your traders die to pirates, but for the price it's definitely worth trying.
Amazing 4x space simulator that i can not recommend enough, especially if you are a fan of space games of any kind, this game makes no assumptions about what you want to do and give you the tools to do many many things.

meine schiffe laufen gegen Piraten lachend in die kreissäge da geht meine Deard gegen paar kleine schiffe Down ich komm mit nen cruser und holz die alle weg.... die Dreard ist nur am zapeln und schiest nicht richtig, ich übernehme die kontrolle und 2 sec später ist alles sauber warum kannn das die Ki nicht? die Ki der fraktionen kann das meine fleet ist zu blöd dann hab ich den fall das mehrere grose schiffe von mir in alle rihtungen fliegen mit follen leben aber die kleinen greifen dann die AI core an dann gehen auch so 20 kleine kaput biss die grosen EINZELN kommen um kaputzugehen aber die AI core immer schön in gruppen..... zum kotzen
What-If-The-X-Series-Were-2D: The Game
Aside from some minor perfomance issues lategame, it's surprisingly good.
Unending Galaxy is a fast-paced 4x real-time empire builder. there's a few issues, but it's got a LOT going for it, not the least of which being the active developer who is constant working and updating the game, something that is unfortunately rare in the current climate of early access and greenlight trash that permeates Steam.
down to business then:
Pros:
-Many (positive) similarities to the X series of games, specifically X3 - Terran Conflict, probably the best known of the franchise. This is mainly due to the developer being a serious X3 modder - he brought in all sorts of fancy empire management options and automation that are common in the X games.
-sophisticated mechanics that allow for emergent gameplay
-variety of ways to play. you don't have to build an empire or colonize worlds, you can make plenty of money and get huge fleets going just by trading, mining, hunting bounties, and pirating.
-game explodes in complexity once you finally colonize a planet and get around to building industry infrastructure (for some this is a con, but if so, you're playing the wrong game bruh)
-game graphics are simple, 2d sprites, but this actually helps in terms of being able to clearly identify what is happening on the screen
-so many different maps, scenario starts, and game world customization options, that you could tool around with the different starting options forever.
-Race/faction ships all play and feel genuinely different, races have well-established strengths and weaknesses.
Cons:
-UI is sometimes difficult to parse, there is a LOT information to be juggling in your head all at the same time, and those who aren't veterans of the X games or of large-scale 4x/real-time strategy games in general are going to feel overwhelmed.
-selecting ships and giving orders is much harder than it needs to be. too many menus to go through in order to give simple instructions. Dev has acknowledged some of this criticism and is actively working on parsing menus and generally improving the UI.
-it's not entirely clear what strengths and weaknesses certain weapons have, and which weapons might be more effective for certain situations.
-combat is simply too fast - large battleships can be reduced to cinders in seconds by a well-coordinated swarm. ships movement as well, is generally speaking very quick given the size of the individual sectors - if the sectors in space were larger, the speed would be fine, but as it is, you traverse sectors and die in combat entirely too quickly. if you really want to keep your ships alive, you'll have to engage primarily in small-scale maneuvers and take personal control of your battleships so you can get them out of harm's way quickly
-diplomacy is basically non-existent - this is the only place where the game really falls down, IMO. There are no real permanent alliances or trade options, everything is on a timer and will eventually run out. the ai has no real sense, it seems, of where it's fleets are at and what kind of force distribution is going on - generally speaking, when it's time to go to war, the ai throws everything it has at you (and each other) and whoever happens to win the first major engagement will then proceed to (more or less) steamroll the loser. beyond this, the ai is EXTREMELY aggressive. their only long-term interest is war, and when you are just beginning a game, attempting to colonize a planet and build up your empire, you can easily get smashed before you can even get off the ground.
Most of the cons amount to simple fixes or adjustments in the way the game mechanics work. I'm confident that the dev will get things figured out.
I would recommend this game for anyone who liked the X games or large scale space 4x games with a real-time twist. now is an especially good time to buy, seeing as there was just a big content update as well as a superb graphical update which really improves the overall look and feel of the game.
I think this is a great game and I have clocked in 40 hours and plan to put in more as time passes.
First, I will be talking about the look of the game, which I think looks great. Second, I will be talking about the sound of the game, which is good but could use improvement. Third, I will be talking about the games Artificial intelligence, which is superb. Fourth, I will be talking about the games interface and how intuitive it is. Fifth, I will be talking about why I like the game and how it has a variety of play options available to the player. I recommend you buy this game it is a lot of fun!
First, the games AESTHETICS are great. The backgrounds have a wide variety and are visually stimulating throughout the game. The aesthetics of the different races are also enjoyable showing a remarkable amount of variety that you do not see with other games. The preview doses a fairly good job of showing you what the game looks like, but if you are into building you can set up building patterns and the like.
Second, the SOUND of music is beautiful, keep the adventure going, but there are some problems with ships firing noises. The game can get a bit buggy on firing sounds both in small and large encounters. Normally, one ship firing will take precedence over the others and sometimes firing sounds will not be heard at all. However, there is never an issue with the music muffling firing sounds if they do work. However, the game is still being developed, so this could be fixed over time and never reduces or harms the game play experience, especially if fighting is not a focus of your game play.
Third, the game's ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE system is just amazing in the game. The other factions play extremely well and your own ships operate according to the orders you give them with remarkable efficiency. The game lends itself to allowing multitasking by giving you the ability to order multiple ships to do things automatically. If you have any faction enemies they tend to respond very quickly, which makes decisions important.
Fourth, the game's INTERFACE is really intuitive. I found myself learning, which menu I needed and when relatively quickly. This was extremely helpful in both setting up the artificial intelligence and playing the game in general. Being able to quickly go through tabs to find information was extremely useful and over time has become easier as patches have improved it since I started playing.
Fifth, the game is FUN. Their are quite of ways to play the game and things to do and really you have a lot of options. You can build an empire, but that is not necessary for game play. You can play the entire game without ever owning a building and it wouldn't harm your play at all. How and what you do in the game are up to you. With an economic, military, and exploration focus. There are eggs in the game and there are more to come that I look forward to. There is also a very in depth weapons system, and quests for factions with real rewards and a multitude of ships to play with.
Played the game for all of 2 minutes before triggering a bug which resulted in me having ridiculous amounts of money.
I waited several months after launch before I installed in hopes that the game would be reasonably polished, but such a game-breaking bug so early in the game clearly shows that this game was not ready for release.

Unending Galaxy is a simple game that can keep you busy for hours. It has simple shooting and motion controls like the old arcade game Asteroids, but it adds in a dynamic to build a civilation empire and own the galaxy. If you have played any sort of RTS game, like the old Age of Empires games, you get to build civilations like that but in space. Highly recommend!!
Pretty cool game. Love to strategize on games and build up an empire from hardly anything. It took me a while to get used to the gameplay but had me addicted pretty fast. I highly recommend.
I really wanted to like this game, and it seems like it has the potential to be a good sandboxy 4X space game.
But the controls and interface are all kinds of clunky and confusing. What finally caused me to give up was I bought a cruiser to be a bounty hunter, set its AI mode and home system, and it just flew around the system doing nothing. Its state was "idling" in the assets list. "Well, maybe I need to manually grab some bounty missions," I thought. I did, no change.
My first 8 or so hours with this game were all like that. How do I do this thing I want to do? Maybe this? I think that worked... maybe? Can't tell. Wait, why's it doing this now? I do not understand what is happening. Maybe Youtube will help.
I also did the tutorial, which was helpful, but it broke at the part where you build a shipyard. I'd tell it to build, and I'd get the construction icon box thingy, but it disappears after 2 seconds, didn't deduct the price from my account, and never built anything. After 20 minutes failing to figure that out, I just moved on to the game and didn't have any better luck.

This little game actually surprised me.. Quite a bit so.. It's very simple, yet complex enough to be fulfilling. It has done an excellent job of finally satisfying that craving for a simple space empire/fleet building game.
There are a few things that I feel could have been done better, and i'll cover those second.. But first, onto the positives!
1- Simple and effecient!
This is where this game surprised me. I am really impressed with the control and management given to the players in this form. Want to play rpg style with a single ship as your own? Or have a small fleet of escorts? You can do that. Want to play rts style where you tell a few ships, or large quantities of ships to perform specific actions? You can do that too. Want to just sit back, and stare at a spreadsheet and operate your vastly growing empire without directly controlling any ships? You can do that too, All the while not being hassled to mine/farm repetatively for 20 hours before you start your own empire. You can do that right off the bat. Additionally, while you do have control over your own faction ships and structures, civillian activity is present aswell. The structures you build will automatically spawn civillian ships which will act like free-willed npcs to participate in the growth of your empire. Whether that be mining, trading, or even bounty hunting. You do not need to manage them on your own, and there is no loss when they get their little pea shooter box-car bounty-hunter blown up by a dreadnaught pirate.
Unending Galaxy has managed to mash all this together in one simple and efficient design where one method of play does not clash with another, all in the same game session. Nor are you required to do one over the other. The controls are simple and straightforward enough, without the hassle of selecting gamemodes or setting things up. Simply generate your world, and off you go.
The AI works. You can assign different roles and goals for all your ships individually, or in groups, and the optional automation is self-sufficient.
Now. There is one thing need to be aware of though, and that is the graphics. While this does not hold a huge impact on my judgement for this game (as i've all but been able to see past it all), the game does not use original assets, and the most beautiful visuals are the planets. (Like, really beautiful!).. Some assets are open source assets, which included a ship i used to make my first mod in Endless Sky (That was amusing to see!)
One final note, is that when I first got this game, I was not able to launch it. I was having issues that was ultimately determined to be my AV.. But before that was figured out, the dev was very helpful in trying to get my issue resolved, and even offered that if my attempts to make the game work went past the refund policy for steam, he would send them an exception to allow me to refund it. I'm glad that it was not necessary, as I've had a lot of enjoyment with this game.
Reminds me of X3 but 2D. Its a great game and highly addicting. Some may not like it, but I'd recommend trying it. Also the developer cares, and he has a very good track record with devlopment.
This game is awesome! But, I get way too many crashes to recommend right now. I love the potential. I love starting off with nothing but a ship and eventually earning enough money to build your own empire to conquer the galaxy. I also love that it seems fairly easy to add your own sprites if you so desire, or download and add new mods. Great plus!
An autosave does save your game from the semi-frequent crashes though. The crashes are just too many for me to recommend this game right now. When that is fixed, then I'll give the thumbs up.
I really enjoyed the first 6 hours of the game.
Would compare it to the old X-series in 2d and less complex. You build factories, you build ships and you can fly them yourself or play it like an RTS, which is fun too. Ships can be automated (to go hunting, trade, mine etc.) so you don't have to do all the micromanagement.
It still needs alot of balancing stuff to be done. I also miss the option to be part of the existing empires/factions. It seems like you are forced to have your own faction (might be, because I always choose Mogul as my starting scenario).
However, the devs are working on the game and there are updates each couple of days.
Overall it is worth the money, the devs asking for and I'm looking forward to spend more time in this game.
Didn't like the interface and movement controls. Felt way too much like a college project than a for sale game. Refunded.
First off I recommend to anyone to play the demo/old versions which are availible for free before making this purchase, keep in mind those versions are really buggy.
Arts design is great in my opinion factions are varied enough to distinguish one faction from another, however UI leaves much to be desired and becomes hard to manage later on when you have an empire of ships. Events are well thought out, and provide good universe story telling I haven't seen all of them but I hope there are more in future updates. Music is fine I personally am not crazy about it, but I see it's appeal. Stability wise I've run into a crash or an error for every 4ish hours of leaving the game running since the last patch.
Focusing on the 4 x aspects:
Economy in the game is modelled pretty well and tied to the questing system and the player feels like you are actually a part of the economy, however some factions feel too player dependant and fail to keep up with other factions unless actively supported. Automation makes it easy to manage your faction and allows you to work on a variety of tasks as the player without having to micro every ship.
I really enjoyed combat, once familiar with the controls battles become much easier but still manage to stay interesting. Combat requires skill, I was able to take down 2 capital ships, a carrier and it's escort with a single fast cruiser, and I have lost player controlled capital ships to fighters.
I recommend tutorials for empire building if you are new to these types of games,I jumped right in because I am used to space 4x games and it took me an hour to figure out that I needed to transfer funds from trades into other parts of the economy to build stations. Empire building is also interesting.
If you want to play a rags to riches game and stay fairly neutral, you want to focus on taking an open system as soon as possible peacefully, as the other empires grow fast. However pirates and the antagonst faction grow too fast in my opinion.
Exploration leaves much to be desired, which ties into the event/questing systems. More unique events triggered by exploring a certain number of places or finding artifacts, would really serve this game well. There is so much potential for exploration that the dev has not yet explored in the current version, scouting/exploration quests would be really nice.
Game of the year for me. This is probably my favorite game. I will be playing this game years.
Absolutely no idea wtf to do. Enemies chase you down, seemingly indefinitely. Interface makes absolutely no sense and shortcuts follow a logic of their own. Go to map screen, try and leave map screen by pressing key again. No. Press Esc. No. Press F3 three times. Yes.
Aim weapons? Yes... except they don't fire where you point them. No energy readings from your ship, so no idea when you run out of rapid fire. No range readings, so no idea when to fire.
Trade. What stations want which goods? No, I'm genuinely asking, because there's no way of knowing. Trade stations seem to not actually like trading goods. Pick up passengers floating in space; well this is the worst crime imaginable! Enjoy an entire faction going hostile on you, whether you pay the fine or not.
Would have had more fun throwing £8 in the road and watching people nearly getting run over trying to pick it up. Even on sale I would not recommend.
very good game, enemy ai moves to fast "they control every unit at once" while the player can only control 1 ship at a time. need lots of work on ui and better free camera movement. very addicting but i see no real person geting anywhere in this game.

Hey, I am not a native english-speaker so please go easy on any typos you may find :-)
I bought the game at the initial steam release and had a lot of crashes. Then I set the game to run in Direct X 9 Legacy mode which helped a lot for me and I get barely any crashes at all.
The good about the game is... if you can run it, its pretty fun. The price tag of 11,99 Euro atm is in my opinion set too high, since the game has still some serious crashes (can still not go to game settings from ingame and have to use the game settings out of game before starting the game to change things). Also the economy and number of ships is not nearly as complex as for example a X-series game (which the game creator is a modder of). I think the game still lacks a lot of content and it could need a more fleshed out economy. Also the battles are a lot too fast... sure there is a combat mod that makes some changes, so that combat is slower and more meaningful than just pewpew boom battleship gone, but I think the core game should also lean a lot more in such a direction, basically more away from that arcady feeling and more to a full-scale 4x where you have a slow build-up and your bases and economy has a bigger meaning. It would be also nice to do more with your own sectors when you have some... as far as it is atm you build stations into your sectors and thats pretty much it... I would like to have more defence structures, maybe even minefields and such... I would like to be able to customise the automated patrolships in my sector (amount and kind of and such) maybe that could be also imbued by adding for example a fleet headquarter for stronger patrols and fighter bases for more smaller patrols or something like that.
All in all the game has a good idea behind it. The technical execution is not that good atm, it needs quite more polishing. Also it needs a lot more base game content, sure the game is heavily modable and modders already did come up with smaller mods but to get more people into the game (and more bigger mods in the end) it would be good to lure in a bigger audience with more and of course more fleshed out content. What would also help to make the economy more meaningful... make ship building for the own faction and the AI more complex and as I said combat slower and more meaningful. Give players and AI more tools to protect their assets and add more content in general (would like a lot more ship types like corvettes, cruisers with different niches and something bigger than a battleship maybe to have as a flagship). Thats in my opinion what would help this game a lot and take it from "oh a small nice game that I play for a few hours" to "WOW... and its also heavily modable... I am so gonna make a mod for it and play that game forever".
I know as a user its always kind of easy to point out the weaker parts of a game and say "oh that needs more work" and all. Still keep in mind this is a one man show and he is fixing as fast as possible and will add more content to it as far as I did read on the forums (and I believe him). The game will get there to be that masterpiece we all would like to have, but it still needs time and some deep balancing changes.
So... why a positive review?
If you want to help a dev in getting the game to a broader audience and dont mind the 11,99 Euro price tag you should jump in with both feet. If you have a lot of crashes and graphical odd behavior like me, try the Direct X9 legacy mode, helped me. Also I think you have to see this kind of game here as some kind of early access and not as finished triple A title.
So If you have no problem to get a game thats not labeled Early Access but should be, then buy... help the dev make it bigger and better with your money, feedback and maybe even mods (as far as I did read he also needs more ship models and stations and such, if you have some or know how to make some, maybe contact him?)
If you mind buying a game for 12,99 Euro that needs quite some work (not meaning the content and content balance here, but especially the technical side), then wait a while and see how it turns out.
I think the game is worth playing. If you want to have a more polished experience its worth having it on your radar for a while and then jump in.
The game play its self is fine, as others have mentioned it is like a two dimensional X3 game.
My biggest problem is constant problems trying to save and load games, issues where the game would not load, would just perpetually hang at a loading screen, or would cause my video drivers to crash and stop the game from operating.
Because of these I can't recommend buying this game.
I started to play this game and I was excited after watching a video on youtube. I get in the game I choose "Lost Fleet" I customize said fleet even made my own logo for them. 10seconds into the game everytime my ships wouuld start to blow up and nothing was on the screen.
The learning curve is quite extensive is my guess but the tutorial stopped after it told me how to access the ship stats by pushing X, that was it after that I never had another tutorial hint I was left in the water that was actually quicksand.
Unit selection is ... harder than what you would think. You have to select and hit space to have the unit actually selected. Setting a unit to "defense shooting" is irrelevent as the game instantly puts it back to default.
The only thing I found cool was controlling a ship but my ship went off screen and I had no way of moving the camera, camera controls are lacking and for an RTS it is quite vital.
I dont know why i like this game but i played it over 70h now and its awesome.
Unending Galaxy is a Sandbox RTS and Top-Down Shooter made by a former X series modder.
This description alone made me wanted to try it out over a year ago, and I've been coming back to it every few months since then. Mind that most of my play time wasn't logged on Steam.
In UG, you're free to pick your goal, map, gamestart and playstyle, or you can jump-in on the default settings and try to take over the galaxy!
On default, you start with one Transport (Trader) ship and one Cruiser (Combat) ship. This gives you a few opportunities:
- Automate your Trader (to trade automatically or to mine), and hunt bounties with your Cruiser.
- Automate your Cruiser (to hunt for bounties or raid ships), and perform trade and missions with your Transport.
- A few other options.. ;)
The game is full of such choices. When it comes to diplomacy, you could choose to turn a Galaxy full of hate in one full of peace, or simply turn it all into a free-for-all warzone!
As you build up your credits as an independent pilot and fleet commander, you'll eventually have enough money to buy a Dock Builder (Construction Ship), which will enable you to start your own empire, produce your own goods, own territory and construct ships for free with the Ship Parts you've produced yourself.
And again, you can choose wether to start taking over other empires through war, backstabbing or diplomacy.
Therefore, the strengths of the game really lie on its freedom, and on the ability to assign different roles to your ships by automating them with different AI modules (Trader, Miner, Police, Bounty Hunter, Military, Pirate Raider, Scavanger and maybe others). Building your empire and evading difficult situations through diplomacy is also fun, and finding different ways to deal with the challenges the game pit you against.
The problems lie at the fact the game is a niche game. There IS a learning curve, the controls and UI are not 100% intuitive to people who are not used with this genre and, even though the game has a very wide scope, it was and is being developed by a single person - so bugs and issues were probably going to exist.
However, the developer has a great habit of fixing critical things first, listening to suggestions and continuously improving and polishing the game.
As you may've noticed, there were three patches in the first week after release, and the developer has plans for the future and planned improvements for different areas of the game, and will probably release a roadmap in a few days.
If you enjoy Sandbox, Empire-Building or Space-themed games, UG is a keeper!

Although the learning curve on this game is somewhat high due to a lack of current or complete documentation (still in devlopement), I find Unending Galaxy (UG) to be a refreshing 4X game with a challenging AI, broad spectrum of potential scenarios and replayability, and just plain fun to play. Once a player understands the controls, it is comparitively quick to play compared to other 4X games and yet still has a great deal of depth and a range of options for playability for various styles. For a person like me who has a lot of personal demands upon my time, this has been a great way to feed my 4X game appetite. I feel like in my dozens of hours of game play that I have hardly hit the surface of the game on many levels, and yet, the economic system and combat are straightforward and fast. At times, I micromanage as much as possible while at others, I put my ships on autopilot and sit back and watch the action. It has the feel of a universe which I am still exploring...and a game which will occupy many hours and days of my time.
As of patch 1.2.0.3, I'm unable to load any save game.
It's got promise, but as of now unplayable.
I can't recommend this game, but it's not bad either.
Just slightly off the target for my taste.
Based on the description and the reviews in general, you would assume this is a space sim mix with 2D and 4x,
It is, but what I personally enjoy with these sorts of games, is the slow buildup.
This game is just to fast paced, your econemy will skyrocket withing minutes, and as such, the feeling of anything solid evaporates.
Sorry, wish there was a steam "So So" Recommendation.
The game isn't bad at all, just needs a few fixes as it crashes quite a lot.

更正下，玩了段时间后发现英文其实无所谓了，之前一直以为任务啥的需要看懂，实际上不是的，任务总共分三种，赏金猎人 运输 摧毁基地，实际上只需要认准几个关键字就够了，而且也很好理解。
然后说下优缺点
优点是自由度比较高，可以随意做自己想做的事情，跑商 挖矿 当赏金猎人 或者当海盗 也可以建立自己的帝国发展势力，这些都是可以做的。
缺点就是目前各方面都比较简单，内容严重不足啊有木有。
This game reminds me a lot of how the X series games play along with some Distant Worlds and some top down space shooter added in. It doesn't have cutting edge 3D graphics, but the aesthetic still feels great, the art is smooth yet crisp. While it does use a lot of the ship assets from AI War, they still manage to feel fresh and don't detract from the value of the game at all.
From starting with a full empire to play it as a 4X strategy game, to starting with a small fleet or even a single ship to make it feel more like a sim, there is something here for you if you enjoy these types of games. There are 11 Starting Scenarios, 7 total handcrafted non-tutorial maps, a procedural map generator and a faction customizer which ends up offering a lot of replayability. You can have a small knife fight galaxy or a huge 1800+ sector sandbox universe plus many other variable to fine tune how you want the universe to ultimately run.
I feel the music is standard for a small indie studio and I feel the sound effects could be better, but neither really detract from the gameplay and they are satisfactory. Not too much to suggest here as I know how expensive these assets can be to acquire if you want superb and unique non-library music/effects.
To me, the game is great, I've had quite a bit of fun just trying out different starts and seeing what the gameplay has to offer both on the 4X end and the sim end. At the basic level, it's very much trade, fight, build, think with the opportunity to play it as a nearly full featured 4X. I say nearly because obviously some things are missing, like a researchable tech tree. Your tech is actually pre-determined while setting up the game. I do not feel that this takes away from the experience whatsoever, but it could for you if you prefer the traditional research trees.
One of the great aspects of the game is, like Distant Worlds, you can automate a lot of tasks and though it does not reach the level of Distant Worlds, it's not as complicated as that game either so it does not need as much. For me, it is the right amount. If you don't like all that automation, you can of course control everything yourself, you can even create control groups and play it as a typical RTS, right clicking your attack groups to wherever you like.
The biggest common complaint that I see popping up is the depth of the tutorial. While for me personally, I felt it was fine and was able to easily figure out whatever was not answered in the tutorial simply by playing, I do understand that this is an issue for those not used to this type of gameplay. It's important to note that this is on the list of things to fix along with the other issues.
Aside from the readability of the text font on my screen (which I have been able to work around thanks to some help), I do not have any big complaints about this game that would warrant a thumbs down. In fact, quite the opposite as you can see. The sheer fun of the game, the option to play it in different ways, the helpfulness of the developer, and the price (a steal in my opinion), this is a fine entry to the 4X Strategy/Space-Sim market.
10 hours of playtime review:
I haven't had this much fun learning a game "the hard way" in a long time.
I've been wiped out many times from various things I did to upset foes more powerful than myself... and yet, I can't seem to stop myself from starting again!
Currently, I'm playing a "Lost Fleet" scenario on a procedural map. I've managed to ally myself with the Federation and keep myself in the good graces of everyone (besides the AI Core, of course), while colonizing a decent sized section of the map. My forces are actually rated as "low military might", which might be enough to wipe out a couple of the weaker factions, if I wanted to.

I bought this game thinking it would be a fun game, in the flavor of say Space Rangers HD and other gems.
Unfortunately it's not. It almost plays like a java game on addictinggames.com or something. Basically the background scrolls behind your ship and not your ship flying over it. Add on that you simply fly into the edges of the screen to move sectors and it feels really cheesy to me.
Not saying that some won't find this game fun, but for me, defintately not worth the money. I'll keep an eye on it and see if it gets a facelift, but as of now, it's refunded to my credit card and yet another reason I'm thankful for refunds on steam now.

Сама по себе игра интересная, но багов тут насеяно, просто как бактерий в общественном туалете и ладно они были бы незначительные, так некоторые либо портят впечатление от игры, либо нарушают игровой процесс.
Пара примеров:
- Неправильный расход балансов в экономике. Бюджет 310000 строим солнечную фабрику кристалидов, расход нулевой. Построил 6 штук, сохранил-загрузил, за каждую дали +310000, хотя должны были вычесть -310000 уже после первой. Нарушает всю механику и сбивает интерес развивать экономику под плинтус.
- Майнеры застревают на некоторых фабриках и не хотят оттуда вылезать, что с ними ни делай. Может устают от работы и ударяются в самолечение космической травой… Лечится перезагрузкой.
- Военные базы содержат дубли кораблей. Скажем вместимость 25 ангара, а там сидит 48 и вылетать не хотят ни на патрулирование заданных секторов, ни даже пострелять в нарушителей. Полный игнор окружающей реальности, кроме случаев прямого нападения на базу.
- Охотники за светлячками летают где хотят и быстро умирают от разных смертельных прелестей открытого космоса. Задать определенный сектор нельзя.
- Можно взять баунти на собственный корабль… Баг.
- Играл за пирата, написано мембер, отстегиваю с каждой системы по 500 кредитов в минуту, но почему-то иногда пиратские военные нападают на управляемые мною корабли или системы, денег хотят или просто берегов не видят, выяснить так и не удалось. Явный баг.
- Еще игра вылетает часто, но автосохранения вроде как нивелируют этот недостаток, хоть и раздражает.
- Установленная финальная цена на продукцию никого не волнует, поставил 500 на батарейки, они как возили по 10 так и возят. Демпингуют за мой счет, негодяи.
- Некоторые части интерфейса не помешало бы улучшить и добавить дополнительные фильтры + дать возможность пользователю объединять в подгруппы (охотники, майнеры и т.д.) в текущем варианте глаза быстро начинают кровоточить от всего понапиханного в кучу, те фильтры что есть скудны или непригодны попросту.
Надо дать разработчику годик, чтобы все допилил и тогда можно сесть поиграться снова. В текущем состоянии не советую.
This game is well worth the nine dollars I paid for it, however, it could use some serious optimizations in regards to older hardware.
My reviews are quite simple. I take all the aspects worth noting and just discuss them without any bias or long lists of pros and cons. Now, This game is EXACTLY what ive been looking for in modern space sims, This is what so many have wanted and finally theres a game where you can start off as a merchant flying one ship, and eventually play the game like an RTS once youve built a huge empire. Your decisions you make when trading, being a pirate, building stations, it all matters, because you can become a major player on the stage and interact with the other huge factions. Were you a pirate near the federation territory? Well theyll probably declare war on your affiliated faction. The frontlines will move from sector to sector as you see actual soverign territory being claimed by the stronger of the factions. As for the economic side, Im familiar with making money and managing assets but have not had an extremely long and drawn out game to see if it has any kinks, so far, so good in that aspect. The state of the game, is moderately buggy, but its not unplayable. The occasional crashes/freezes happen, but my autosave saves the day and theres already been a number of patches out since release. I could go further in depth about this game, but ill simplify it questions. Do you like X3? Do you wish that X3's universe would actually change? Do you wish you could have an impact on politics after youve become a quintillionaire? Do you want youre grinding as a trader/mercenary/bounty hunter/etc. to mean something? If you said yes to all these questions, then BUY THIS GAME.
