For the most part the characters and story are really great, and the game mechanics are very fun and unique on paper. The translations for this game are honestly some of the best I've seen as well. Actually playing the game though is so genuinely awful.
For starters the RNG in this game is absolutely insufferable (and I'm not even talking about the gatcha... yet). So much of the gameplay is just pure RNG, including negative events, failing practice, late starts/rushed, not getting the gold skill at the end of a support event (like genuinely why), sparks at the end of a career, and on and on. It plays itself like a roguelite, but you can strategize and upgrade support cards all you want - good luck recovering a career after two mood downs before your final race, failing a training during the URA final, or getting zero support prio during summer camp. Nothing pisses me off quite like having a perfect run only to spiral downhill at the final 10% of the career when I've already invested a lot of time. And then imagine grinding races only to get the worst sparks imaginable 99% of the time. There is no way in hell I have the time and patience to spark grind (and I currently have over 500 hours in the game with maybe one or two umas with "decent" sparks). I personally believe this is extremely abusive and tedious game design that goes out of its way to waste your time just for playing the game, even as a semi-casual/serious player. I've been told it gets better as time goes on, but seriously it makes me wonder why would you release a game globally in such a frustrating state if you already have a better version.
The other part of the game that just straight up sucks a lot of the fun out is the gatcha. I ain't no prude, I gamble on other gatcha games. In every other gatcha game I've been able to focus on rolling for the characters I want while still being able to build them relatively well using free items. Support cards in this game are unfortunately very very important. They determine your stat build and skills, requiring a pretty hefty variety and high levels. The 4LB Kitasan Black meme goes to show that not only do you need valuable cards but you need multiple instances of them. Sure you get to borrow one card from friends, but the other five need to be provided by you. It is incredibly difficult to 4LB any card without spending a ridiculous amount of money. All that to say that there comes a point where rolling for the character you want (and even just collecting all the characters for a chance to experience there stories and careers) sucks away currency that you desperately also need on support cards. It is so sad to have a game with such big of a cast of characters, only to have a good chunk of focus having to be pumped into support cards. Maybe only I find this frustrating but it doesn't help that the pity system is ass as well. And yeah you can get characters and support cards from previous banners in the mix without having to wait for their banner to come back, but I swear to god the amount of times I got an Oguri Cap thrown at me instead of a banner Uma is really making me want to throw her in F tier.
To end with a bit of a more positive note, the actual multiplayer side of the game is pretty fun and exhilarating. Sure you'll get your average whales in your tournaments, but I think it might be my favorite part of the game aside from the stories. It's just that those pvp features don't start becoming a real part of the gameplay until you've committed your time and money to the rest of what I've mentioned, so be aware of that if that's something you're looking forward to.
I really love this game and have definitely had those moments of true joy here and there (hence my playtime), but there's something so disheartening about taking a two month break from being on a cursed run streak only to come back to... another cursed run streak.
