Full disclosure, I kickstarted this game, and I love it. I also loved the original book and my copy is falling apart from use. This is a fantastic upgrade and the dwarven forge terrain and figurines style is so great. Some of the fights get repetitive once you've learned the monster move sets so I do wish there was a little more variety, but otherwise this is just perfect.

If you loved these books when younger, you will *FINALLY NOT be disappointed* in the "Vision" this game Reflects. The Nostalgia. And then comes the mind-blowing experience of your fond BUT Sacred memories brought to life, AND looking just like model 3D terrain is being set down and lifted up from "the table - also represented!) They have been so careful with every detail and sticking to the original very precisly. Sure, It's still a very passive game, it wouldn't be FF if it wasn't exactly what it IS: Fabulous!
I love the tiny details. Bases on the figurines, Color/Uncolor (what a difference! SO HAPPY they are the Originals!), and more important...you didn't ADD a bunch of stuff that made this just like any other Phone Game. It's unique and you have my respect. Thanks for Creating this!

Hop on the Trend of making video versions of TT games/BETTER versions of OLD video games...this would be a BLAST for you guys to restore: "Flux", an early 90's (?) game, blending animation (primarily) with a human actor...Christopher Lloyd! Can't say I enjoyed it. Played the first mission, and I didn't have fun, and I think it's because the combat isn't fun. At the end, I was dreading the tedium of combat.
My first entry into the Fighting Fantasy digital games was with the Sorcery! series in my iPod Touch more than a decade ago. These games always scratch an into that I didn't have in me, one that only fantasy settings from the 80's, with their gruesome and weirdly visceral narratives can reach.
TWoFM is a weird game to recommend. The first 10 hours I spent with it, I was just plainly frustrated since many of the deaths are just arbitrary and feel plain stupid. When I played Sorcery!, I was unafraid to fail since it was easy to backtrack, try new things, and see what doing things differently could get you, without sacrificing too much replayability (the amount of possible combinations is big enough to warrant multiple playthroughs with both characters). In TWoFM, failing means having to redo a 1-2 hour playthrough, having to deal with the same fights over and OVER and OVER again, which gets very tedious, very fast.
Don't get me wrong, the combat mechanics are fun and actually engaging. But when you're just one bad roll of the dice away from losing an hour of progress, you feel kind of deterred to keep trying.
However, I can't stop recommending this game to fans of old-school fantasy and, generally, for TTRPG fans. Once past those first 10 gruelling yet very interesting hours, the game loses a lot of its challenge and becomes more exploratory since you know almost nearly every creature's attack patterns, have an overall good feel for the combat system, and know most of the decisions which are worth it and that aren't. Most characters' stories have been interesting enough to keep me going through the Mountain over and over again. Overall, I would recommend you to buy it on sale. It's less than a taco, anyway.
It's a shame that they dropped the development of the game so soon after release. It's obvious that the devs were planning on releasing 3 legendary lords and a bunch of additional content, but had to abandon it after it failed to garner enough attention. Hopefully they can return to it later on and finish their planned projects.
Fun game I find myself coming back to every so often. Good story and fun mechanics.

Adorava os livro jogos e me arrependi de ter pego esse jogo, principalmente pela mecânica de luta, extremamente lenta e limitada. Não tenho como recomendar, uma pena. the AI isn't playing a game. It's playing to curse. It's evil. That's true for the entire internet that uses https:// instead of G:// like I do. I still use a two-bit computer rather than a more complicated and appropriate desktop, etc. [I forget the proper term[ but the games ought to work properly.
Instead the AI is abhorrent. I've never seen it more apparent than in this game. Playing against a propaganda piece supported by Daedra [enemies of God & Satan] ought to be entirely admonishable.
Isn't there anything the Game Company can do about the https:// situation? These versions of the internet are horrible. A twin-binary system - it's been said its the stupidest, clumsiest computer system ever.
I've been to space, bee an intelligencve and security agent using high end computers. This MACHINE is absurd.
I cannot recommend the game or STEAM. These systems and their alternative-lineration programming is noteworthy.
I got to thumb down every game on this stupid device until the situation improves. THis is ridiculous. Awful. I've played the better versions of these games other Internets. the http & https system is convoluted and innately wrong.

The save points are so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ badly placed, that my whole 40 min quest is gone after dying - sorry, but that's just not fun, even tho its part of the game to resurrect or get a new player. But I really dont care.
The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is a tabletop style game where you run through a choose your own adventure like story. Although I found myself enjoying the game in my first playthrough, I felt like the lack of true save progress caused each additional playthrough to become a drag.
First the good. The game itself is quite interesting, with the story moving forward based on which options you pick to move forward with. There are a lot of rooms, subplots, and different things to find as you explore, and I enjoyed this aspect to the game. Sometimes when you enter rooms/dialogue options, there will be battles. The combat gameplay itself is also pretty simple and fun. It is a turn based and grid based system with different starting characters having different combat attacks. There is a lot of RnG to the combat system, but you can minimize some of it by planning correctly. If the game was more of a roguelike story, this could have worked really well.
Now why am I leaving this a negative review even though I enjoyed a lot of the game? I feel like there is a significant lack of enjoyment playing the game over again for later playthrough. The entire story is fixed aside from the starting characters, options you choose, and luck based things. Each character essentially has 3 lives, but after that you need to start over again from the very beginning. This means that you are mostly playing through the exact same thing in new playthroughs. As much as it was fun discovering new rooms and new options in an organic first run, it becomes a total drag when running through the same dialogue and options for incremental playthroughs... especially since there is no option to speed up. Playing the first area again and again and again is just extremely boring. If the game added periodic story save points where you can start instead of the very beginning, it would have made it a lot more fun.
Overall, I think The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is a pretty fun game that becomes incrementally more boring every single time you need to start over to the point where it becomes a chore. If you are fine with this, give it a shot since the game itself is interesting.
Clearly a crappy phone game that would normally be free to play with paid DLC and other microtransactions. If you like your combat to have exactly 2 options, move or attack, you'll love it. If you want something more interesting than that, look anywhere else really.

Even if you haven't read the Fighting Fantasy game book this game is based on, it's fun.
The game uses a simple turn by turn game system with original art (from the book).
Your states are Skill (ranges from 7-12), Stamina (14-24), and Luck (7-12). In the gamebooks you rolled for them but in this game you pick from warriors with varied preset stats.
Your Skill is compared to the monsters with you each rolling 2 six-sided dice added onto it. The winner hits. But you can also maneuver in such a way that you (or the monster) can strike without the rolling against each other. This can be hella' dangerous.
Stamina is like hit points. Run out of those and you're dead. As you'd expect, every hit will subtract a number of hit points which is often 2 but can vary. Unlike the original system, you can position your warrior during combat and attack in different styles unique to each warrior. Warriors come with multiple styles.These styles affect how far you can strike, the direction, area and how much damage you inflict. Some require a few turns before they can be used again. The monsters you will face also may have some of these styles. There's also other affects of getting or giving hits.
Luck affects situations where you may be able to avoid some nasty situation. Unlike the other stats, Luck goes down 1 pt every time it's used. You have no control over this.
As you successfully end combats you earn points toward new warriors that you can get upon completion or die. And die you will do, A LOT. This game is deceptively simple but it's a challenge to get through without dying. Even with resurrections (you get 3), every combat could get your killed, some a lot easier than others.
There isn't much in terms of sound effects or music but you'll rock out to the orc singing early one. But the graphics are attractive and darn it, this game is addictive. Maybe because after 24 hours, I still haven't gotten through.
Sorry but no. Even with a step-by-step guide that details the exact steps you need to take, it still boils down to RNG luck (clash mechanics in battles) at the end of the day. I love the FnF series, and this is a totally well-done effort, but save your time and money by just watching a walk-through video.
I'm not refunding this to support FnF games in general.

Very repetitive, doesn't feel engaging, and you get closed off from paths for no reason, so every aspect other than visual is unappealing.

This is not a good game for anyone who cares about what is happening in a game. It has a cool look and interesting sounds, but I think far too much time must have been spent on these things and not nearly enough time on developing a well thought out game which makes sense. As someone who has played rpg games for over 30 years I see it through that lens. As an rpg game it is similar to playing with the worlds laziest, most unprepared and most arbitrary dungeon master ever, though he does have some interesting pictures to show you now and then.

This is a fun table top game but its not for me, to many dialogues and the game doesn't flow. Story line, art, the music etc is fantastic and makes for a great classic RPG but unless your into something like this, I wouldn't waste your time on it.
THIS is the fighting fantasy done right . The atmosphere , the interface , the fighting style , the way we can choose character that have some diffrent in skill. for anyone who so into fighting fantasy , you can buy this one and you will not be disappointed.

Didn't manage to complete it (does it ever end really?) but enjoyed the time all the same, an original light-rpg tabletop experience.
There is actually a lot to love about this game. The writing is fun, provided you don't take these sorts of things too seriously. I also enjoy the aesthetic of playing as a minifig on a detailed 3D map. It's fun to plunk around like a game piece and watch the next area appear as you turn the corner. But the combat just makes for a frustrating experience.
The combat system is very simple and relies heavily on randomness. Which way will the monster move? Which square will it attack? The ways the enemy minifigs move give you hints, but you're usually still left with 3 or more options to guess at (which seem to be determined randomly). So, it's a bit like trying to play through an RPG where the combat is entirely based on Rock-Paper-Scissors. And when there's a "draw" (you both try to attack each other at the same time) then there's a roll-off to see who's successful, though that can *also* end in a draw.
I've fought several battles multiple times with the same character, and I can never tell how it's going to go. Sometimes you get lucky and you dispatch the enemies with ease. Sometimes it's a miserable slug-fest that never seems to end. And sometimes you get steamrolled by a seemingly "easy" encounter because none of the rolls go your way.
So if you lose, it's back to the last checkpoint for you, or back to the very beginning if you're out of continues. And let me tell you, after playing through the same chunk of the game so many times that you've discovered every secret, trap, treasure, and bit of dialogue, it starts to get a bit repetitive. You start to question whether you want to keep pressing on.
Well, I don't! Maybe after the frustration fades I'll come back and play though in "god mode" just to experience the environments and writing, but as of now, I'm done. It's just not worth dying over and over to whichever minor enemy happens to get lucky.
Someone else is going to have to take care of the Warlock.

This is like those old school choose your own adventure books, only it has a nice boardgame-type 3D visual support, with rather nice graphics and very nice immersive audio. There's several characters to choose from and each has different goals which makes a lot of replayability.
Been a fan of Steve Jackson for decades (Car Wars Illuminati et al.) This is a beautifully rendered D&D style fantasy dungeon crawler where you pick your own adventures and battles as you seek to succeed against the games' DM.
Far deeper than I expected! Towards the end of my first playthrough (at the end of which I was mulched by a massive boss), I kept seeing references to items and characters I hadn't encountered on my journey, despite taking what I'd assumed to be the optimal path.
GORGEOUS illustrations which when clicked can be drained of their vibrant paint color to reveal the detailed linework beneath. This, and really the whole game, reminded me of good ol' tabletop fun. Very classical, very nostalgic, very amusing, and a surprisingly interesting combat system.

[h1]A very impressive presentation of a classic Gamebook[/h1]
This is not your usual Tin Man Games. This is not your usual Gamebook where you roll some dice to set up your STAMINA/SKILL/LUCK and just go from paragraph to paragraph. Nope, this is a very impressive overhaul of the whole gamebook concept.
It's very impressive and really show an old story from the 80s with a fresh coat of paint. It's worth a shot to attract new fans and/or cater to other tastes.
What's new? What's different? Well, first of all, you have pre-generated characters (with their set SKILL/STAMINA/LUCK) and they all have their own quests (basically a side objective).
Second of all, you have all the book's sections represented in 3D and there's a lot of new stuff, it's definitely not a 1:1 rendition of the book).
Third of all (and biggest difference), the combat system is very different, each character has their own special attacks, it all happens in a small board and like Into The Breach, it's simultaneous turn-based. This is a bit challenging and makes the combat more complicate and/or longer than all the other Fighting Fantasy game. It does add maybe a tactical challenge but it can also make it cumbersome, especially if it's your 10th fight against some orcs...
You still have the great art from Russ Nicholson and some new pieces even and you can still feel its gamebook roots when during the game, you get the choice to open a box or leave it, go north or open a door on the right, etc...
The graphics are really cute and well done. It really brings to life the whole Firetop Mountain and it's a shame to think of the possibility to expand and create more games based on this engine. Each characters, most enemies are well represented in the game map as well as during the battles. It's really like playing a mix of RPG Fighting Fantasy with miniatures with your friends and the standard one.
As an introduction game, it's a great for newcomers to Fighting Fantasy, the difficulty is just right, not too much and not too punishing, unlike other games where you can die with just one bad roll, here it just prolongs your agony! :D
You have plenty of characters with their own advantages/disadvantages. replayability is thanks to different outcomes or even different routes in the mountain. Some parts will be very repetitive and you will know in advance where are the traps and whatnot.
In conclusion, it's a very nice way to play this classic adventure (which has been spiced up). If you want the authentic experience, you do have Tin Man Games other Classic game which contains the normal gamebook. It's better to have picked this story and not a super complicate one which could frustrate many new players.
If you enjoyed the books, check this out, it adds a new dimension to the first book by introducing a tactical combat layer that is not solely based on dice rolls.
The big problem here is the lack of replayability. The multiple heroes don't offer enough variety to make repeat plays enticing. Only for those, like me, who are lifelong fans of the FF gamebooks, or if available on a *steep* discount.

This game isn't so much about having an adventure as it is about "memorize where all the important things are and where the traps are so when you die, because the game intends for you to die repeatedly, you will have to memorize these things so your next character can make it further. There's little variance in the game. This would have been much better if it was procedurally generated or randomized with a certain amount of potential variance to reward good decision-making and strategy as opposed to memorization. Plus it also feels very un-adventure like because in some rooms, you're given choices of several things you could do like check a barrel, check a corpse, inspect object A, and you pick one.... and then the game tosses the other possible options out the window and forces you to move forward after only being able to check one thing, which also enforces the "we want you to have to rerun the thing again and again to check all the different things and memorize which ones matter"
oh and you can also pay for stronger heroes to use, with cash. that too.
A faithful adaption of the classic book, with some interesting extras.

Adoro quella sensazione da gioco da tavolo. Si sono impegnati tantissimo in tal senso e il fatto che tu possa scegliere tra un notevole numero di miniature con caratteristiche tutte differenti mi piace un sacco. Anche l'avanzamento da gioco da tavolo mi piace.

I would have much preferred a straight adaptation of the CYOA book, much like other adaptations on Steam.
If you ever played any of the Peter Jackson books, or any similar style of "choose your own adventure" book when you were young, then you must play this. It's a good, though challenging, game in it's own right but if you have the added bonus of nostalgia then this is a must buy.

This is a cracking re-imagining of the Fighting Fantasy gamebook.
For those who enjoyed the 'choose your own adventure' book, you will be familiar with the style of play where you make decisions that can be as simple as turn left/right and you may die or be taken down a path that will take you in completely the wrong direction and you will have no idea until it's too late.
This style of gameplay leads to the need for exploratory mapping, where trial and error will help you to build a picture and familiarity to accomplish deeper goals.
It can take a bit of getting used to and is an acquired taste, but for those who enjoy such play, there is plenty of content here.
Throughout the many adventures here, it stays faithful to the page-turning original and at the same time brings elements of RPG to enable different decisions, adventures and goals. This gives significant replayability across the many heroes.
Really enjoyed this game, highly recommend especially for anyone who loves choose your own adventure books. The addition of moving your mini through the dungeon is great, as are the extra charters with specific quest to extend play.
I've been surprised how much I've been enjoying this. I played quite a few of the Fighting Fantasy books (including this one) in my youth and this plays out pretty much like them but with added visuals depicting your character's miniature moving around the levels as they get revealed, as if it's a tabletop game. It's a nice touch that adds an increased sense of place to the written descriptions. It's lovely to revisit the wonderful original illustrations from the book and I like how you can switch between the original monotone pictures and newer colourised versions (I like 'em old-school mono).
It plays out faithfully to the choose your own adventure books (for both good and ill - complete with the same arbitrary trial and error experiences and unexpected deaths), but the combat has been enhanced with it playing out more like small chess games. These take place on grids with you deciding on whether to move or go on the offensive with a small range of attacks and then seeing how each turn plays out. It's a welcome addition and quite fun - getting to learn the enemy movement patterns and attacks helps a lot with this.
I've found this an enjoyable and reasonably chilled gaming experience and even spent some time nerding out and mapping it to help future runs. On the downside, there's not much of great variety after a while and once you've explored it thoroughly there's little else to see - although other playable characters add some variety in their story quest goals and abilities. If you're of a certain age (a child of the 80s perhaps) the nostalgia will hit hard. If you can accept the nature of the game then there's quite a few hours of entertainment here, especially if you try and complete it with each character. I suppose it's quite niche, but it's had me way more absorbed than I expected to be.

Fun tabletop style game similar to the old Heroquest games on the Amiga. I quite liked the feel of this although it did get a touch repetitive. I wish they'd done some of the other Fighting Fantasy books in this style too.

Warlock of Firetop Mountain is what I would call one of the most excellent versions of a fighting fantasy game book! I loved to try my luck a few decades ago with the book, and I recognized a lot when playing the computer version, but also found a lot of new content. The presentation is more of a table top, with lovely figurines walking on a more and more revealed board. In my opinion, this graphics part is worth playing the game already. The game offers a modern represenatation of the old adventurer's sheet - if the adventurer's sheet would indeed look like the old one, maybe with hand drawn numbers, it would have looked even more nostalgic. Nevertheless, collecting items is highly motivating, and opportunities to collect new items are many, as there are many branches where you can decide where to go. To increase replayability, you collect souls during adventure. With those, you can unlock new adventurers with some special abilities, own side quests, and different appereance. Coming to the battles during "Warlock of Firetop Mountain", they differ from the book a little, because in battle, the table top layout becomes a fighting ground and a kind of 'riddle'. In that riddle, you think about the enemies next action, and do a move or attack that meets that predicted action. Although you have to get comfy with it, battles become challgenging and different to anything else I have played so far. That's a plus indeed! Overall: I love this modern interpretation of the game book!

So sehr ich mich auf The Warlock of Firetop Mountain gefreut habe, so sehr war ich am Ende auch genervt.
Versteht mich nicht falsch, das Spiel sieht super aus. Ich liebe Pen & Paper-Spiele und Tabletop. Und dieses Feeling vermittelt das Spiel wirklich gut. Man zieht mit seiner Figur durch schön gestaltete Gänge und Korridore und kann Entscheidungen treffen, wie eben in einem Abenteuer aus DnD oder ähnlichen Systemen. Die Story ist eher so meh, aber immerhin sind die Texte nicht schlecht geschrieben und das Zetteldesign gefällt mir auch.
Bei meiner ersten Runde bin ich recht schnell draufgegangen, aber ich machte mich direkt daran, die nächste mit einem anderen Charakter zu spielen. Ein wenig enttäuscht musste ich direkt feststellen, dass man durch die genau gleichen Gänge wieder durchgeht. Ich hatte gehofft, dass es prozedural generiert ist, oder man zumindest an einem anderen Punkt startet, wenn man einen anderen Charakter nimmt. Die Fähigkeiten der Charaktere unterscheiden sich leider nur so minimal, dass es kaum einen Unterschied macht, wen man eigentlich gerade spielt. Lediglich die Ziele, die die Figuren verfolgen sind unterschiedlich (für den Anfang).
Also nochmal durch die Ork-Barracken und irgendwann wieder draufgehen. Mhm... Charakter 3 und 4 probiert und mich langsam gelangweilt. Eigentlich hätte ich mir eine Liste machen sollen, welche Wege ich nicht einschlagen sollte, denn es frustriert, wenn man bei Entscheidung 497 wieder den gleichen Fehler macht, einfach, weil man sich nicht dran erinnert.
Unabhängig davon hat mich zum Abbruch des Titels aber der Kampf gebracht. Statt dem üblichen rundenbasierten Kampf, in dem zuerst ein Teilnehmer angreift, dann der nächste usw. bewegen oder kämpfen (beides gleichzeitig geht nicht) wir uns alle zur selben Zeit. Heißt, dass ich die Angriffe meiner Gegner voraussehen muss und mich dementsprechend verhalten sollte. Allerdings artet das "Voraussehen" in ein Raten aus, denn abgesehen von einem Wackeln oder Drehen der gegnerischen Figuren lässt sich nichts erahnen, was die Figuren jetzt machen. Und vor allem nicht, auf welches Feld. Manche Gegner greifen vorwärts an, manche seitlich, manche wechseln, wie es ihnen beliebt - es frustriert einfach, wenn man zum xten Mal gegen steinerne Hände kämpft und trotzdem permanent aufs Maul kriegt, weil es absolut random ist, was die Gegner tun.
Ich hätte wirklich gerne noch mehr von diesem Game gesehen, aber eben gerade habe ich mich nach 2 Wochen noch einmal gezwungen, weiter zu spielen - nur um nach 5 Minuten wieder aufzuhören. Meine Zeit ist mir dann doch zu wertvoll, um sie mit Frustration und Langeweile zu verbringen.

This makes for a frustrating experience due to the fact that you can only resurrect yourself up to three times per playthrough and are sent back to the previous save point (which are few and far between). Between the slow and predictable combat, the unchanging dungeon and decisions, and the horrendous UI, being sent back to a save point and having to make your way back to where you were feels like pure drudgery.
As previously mentioned, the UI is cumbersome and you are forced to click past each box of text (or press Spacebar but this doesn't work for decisions, even if that decision is the only one that you can make). There is a lot of flavor text to describe the areas, which is immersive, but the UI makes it onerous to get through and it sacrifices functionality for immersion and novelty which slows down the overall experience even more.
The gameplay is fun for the first few hours but quickly overstays its welcome once you learn the combat system and want to skip ahead to certain points of the game. I think it would've been much better if you could choose which save point to start each playthrough after you had discovered a save point with a specific character. This would've allowed you to skip parts of the game and made it easier to explore and experience the entire dungeon rather than being forced to replay the same sections with each character.

The graphics use very detailed 3D models for the dungeon and each character and creature in the game has a charming little miniature which helps engross you in the tabletop theme. The miniatures even hop around the dungeon as you navigate it, as if you were moving it yourself with your fingers, and I think this is a nice touch. The combat also makes use of the miniatures by having them slide around a grid and uses attack animations that are independent from the unmoving miniatures but these are low in quality, unimaginative, and boring to look at which is extremely disappointing.

The dungeon songs are composed of purely atmospheric tracks that act as forgettable background noise and nothing more; however, the combat songs are quite fitting and initially add tension to the combat encounters when you're learning the combat system and meeting new creatures for the first few times.

The story is a standard "hero and villain" fantasy story with magic and mythical creatures but I can't comment on the veracity of the game's faithfulness because I've never read the gamebook. That said, it isn't very compelling and feels like it's an afterthought with low stakes because there is no "world-ending" danger, the characters aren't directly connected to the villain or the victims, and they have no reason to seek out the villain after their unique quest has been completed.
As a result, I quickly found myself not caring very much about the story — even the unique quests are barely explored beyond what you read in each character's biography when you select them. In fact, I was more interested in the overall worldbuilding and the locales outside of the mountain. But one neat aspect that I did enjoy was being able to read each character's inner monologue before and after many decisions which helped give some personality and life to them.

The game has one DLC, [u][url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/484970/Goblin_Scourge/]Goblin Scourge[/url][/u], that includes three new characters, a mini-dungeon for the three of them (which leads about half-way into the main game upon completion), as well as a bevy of enemy creatures for the "Gauntlet" game mode (the second game mode which allows you to play as enemy creatures, removes almost all flavor text and decisions, and adds even more combat encounters).

Overall, I found that the game lost its lustre and charm after the first few hours once I had explored each area and beaten the game a few times. I wouldn't have gotten nearly as many hours out of it if I didn't end up making a [u][url=https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2769167589]very comprehensive guide[/url][/u] for it and would've dropped the game after 30-40 hours instead. This playtime is even generous because I'm a completionist, wanted to see the outcomes to many decisions, and wanted to get the achievements — if you look at other reviewers' playtimes, many have less than 10 hours with a few having 15-25 hours played.
Even if you really enjoyed the 1982 book and are looking for nostalgia or a trip down memory lane, the game is overpriced for the amount of playtime you'll get out of it, it has an awful combat system, a clunky UI, and it ported the old school mentality and faults of the 1980s gamebooks rather than adapting the game for modern times. If you still really want to get it then I recommend waiting for it to go on sale which it regularly does for [u][url=https://steamdb.info/app/324740/]80% off at 4.00 USD[/url][/u]. Otherwise, stay away from this and read the real gamebook or play a better game instead.
Warlock of Firetop Mountain does a great job building atmosphere in the pen and paper tradition. While it's not the best writing I've come across it has the right vibe for a retro D&D adventure module. I found the combat to be initially unintuitive and eventually infuriating. I also found the trial-and-error adventuring style frustrating. I think this is mostly a nostalgia generator, and it may be great at that, but for me it kept all the worst parts of D&D and the new stuff didn't click.

Można więc powiedzieć, że gra, którą recenzuję jest remakem jednej z najstarszych gier w historii. Pytanie tylko, czy można nazwać książkę paragrafową grą? Myślę, że można, bo poza czytaniem i wyborami, system ten zawierał też walkę opartą o rzuty dwoma kośćmi k6, a gracz posiadał swój ekwipunek oraz kilka cech, które wpływały na przebieg rozgrywki. Oczywiście komputerowa adaptacja poszła o krok dalej i poza wdrożeniem bardziej skomplikowanego systemu walki, dołożyła też oprawę graficzno-muzyczną.

W grze wcielamy się w jednego ze śmiałków, który rusza do wnętrza góry, aby pokonać tytułowego czarnoksiężnika. Na bohatera czekają przygody oraz mnóstwo skarbów pilnowanych przez fantastyczne stwory, które bronią dostępu do siedziby czarownika. Początkowo mamy do wyboru tylko trzy postacie, ale za zdobywane podczas przygody dusze, możemy odblokować kolejne ( łącznie jest dostępnych aż 15 figurek postaci, a z dodatkiem Goblin Scourge!, 18 ). Bohaterowie różnią się nie tylko wyglądem, ale też bronią, która pozwala wykonywać im różne ataki oraz statystykami. Oprócz tego każdy bohater ma swój cel indywidualny, który poza celem głównym w postaci pokonania czarnoksiężnika, można opcjonalnie wykonać, co doprowadzi nas do prawdziwego zakończenia daną postacią ( zdobędziemy też adekwatne osiągnięcie). Ponieważ jest to adaptacja książki paragrafowej, to rozgrywka polega głównie na czytaniu oraz podejmowaniu decyzji w oparciu o proponowane przez grę rozwiązania. Możemy też często obrać inną drogę do celu, a tych jest kilka, więc kolejne podejścia mogą się znacznie od siebie różnić. Aby trochę grę urozmaicić, to komputerowa adaptacja dodaje grafikę w formie makiety na której przeciwnicy oraz nasz bohater są reprezentowani w postaci figurek, zdecydowano się też skomplikować system walki, który dzięki temu zyskał na głębi. Bardzo dobrze wypadła też warstwa audio, a podczas naszych podróży oprócz oglądania ładnie wykonanych makiet i figurek, posłuchamy naprawdę świetnej muzyki i przyzwoitych odgłosów, co zdecydowanie dobrze wpływa na klimat produkcji.

Adaptacja wprowadziła też sporo zmian fabularnych oraz zdarzeń, które nie występowały w wersji książkowej. Głównie są to przygody powiązane z celami dodatkowymi danych postaci, ale nie tylko. Ogólnie wszystko wyszło bardzo dobrze, a gra dzięki temu zyskała więcej głębi oraz jest bardziej regrywalna od protoplasty. Wpływ na to mają nie tylko zmiany fabularne, ale też lepszy od oryginału system walki. Jeśli trafimy w jakiejś komnacie na wroga, to otwiera nam się nowa plansza, na której będziemy walczyć. W każdej turze możemy wykonać ruch oraz atak, jeśli atakujemy pole na które ruszy przeciwnik, to trafiamy i zadajemy mu obrażenia zależne od wykonanego ataku ( różne ataki, mają różne wartości). Podobnie czynią przeciwnicy. Kluczem jest więc przewidzenie ruchów przeciwnika oraz dostosowanie ataków, którymi dysponujemy do danej sytuacji. Jeśli jednak nasz atak zgra się z atakiem wroga, to następuje clash (walka w zwarciu), co oznacza, że rzucamy dwoma kośćmi za siebie oraz za przeciwnika, a wyższy wynik wygrywa. Najlepiej więc unikać zwarcia i starać się przewidzieć ruch wroga przed atakiem, co nie zawsze bywa łatwe. Ponieważ każda postać ma inne ataki, to zależnie od tego kim gramy, gra może być łatwiejsza bądź trudniejsza, co oczywiście też wpływa na regrywalność pozytywnie. Kostki użyjemy nie tylko podczas walki, ale też podczas niektórych zdarzeń. Naszą postać poza staminą, która jest swoistym życiem, określają jeszcze dwie cechy, a jest to Luck oraz skill. Obie cechy będą istotne podczas różnych spotkań poza walką i podobnie jak stamina, ich wartość jest inna dla różnych postaci. Jest jeszcze ekwipunek w którym przechowamy różne przedmioty, aczkolwiek najważniejsze to racje żywnościowe ( przywracają staminę) oraz resurrection stone dający możliwość wskrzeszenia naszej postaci 3 razy na grę, co bardzo ułatwia czerpanie przyjemności z przygody.

Do gry wyszedł też dodatek, jednak już na wstępie ostudzę wyobraźnię wszystkim tym, którzy liczą na nową przygodę. Goblin Scourge! skupia sie głównie na walce. Jest to nadal ta sama przygoda, ale większość zdarzeń, opisów i innych przygód zastąpiono walką. Można powiedzieć, że jest to takie rozszerzenie pozbawiające nas większości warstwy fabularnej, a w zamian dając walkę. Mi osobiście średnio podchodzi to rozwiązanie i wolę oryginalną przygodę, na szczęście dodatek daje też trzy nowe postacie do podstawki, więc odrobinę poszerza przygodę.

Bardzo się cieszę, że chociaż pierwsza część FF doczekała się tak świetnej adaptacji komputerowej, która nie tylko na sztywno przenosi historię z oryginału na PC, ale też poszerza ją o pasującą klimatem oprawę audio-wizualną. Dodaje też ciekawy system walki oraz nowe przygody i postacie. W mojej opinii jest to najlepsza komputerowa adaptacja tego cyklu w historii. Chciałbym, aby więcej części doczekało się podobnych produkcji, a jest z czego wybierać, bo książek powstało ponad 60!

Straightforward, story-driven RPG. Since it is based on a printed book, forget about level-ups, perks, and myriad side quests. Pretty short in length, so it can be finished in a couple of sessions. Still, there is some replay value because you can have a replay with a different character.
I have 50+ hours in the Switch version
This is one of my all time favorite games. I loved playing through it, learning every nook and cranny of the compact but full of surprises world. Each character plays in combat slightly differently to eachother and has different dialogue and possibly options at times. Some characters have different bosses and many of them have different objectives. I enjoyed every minute of those 50 hours. It's not a game for everyone I'm sure, some people may not like the combat, some people may not be a fan for the gameplay loop but I highly recommend giving it a try to see if you like it as I feel like this is a very underappreciated game that provides a nice and pretty unique experience. I've played a lot of the other adventure book games on steam and mobile and none of them are as enjoyable to me as this one.

Back in 1984 there was a ZX Spectrum version of the The Warlock of Firetop Mountain. It was an arcade game that had nothing really in common with the book. This version has similar problems. Combat has been turned into a rather slow and tiresome grid strategy game. I was hit by a creature which I wasn't sure how had hit me given where it was on the board. I could restart and see if I misread something but I'd lost the will to live by then. It's like a movie adaptation of a book done by someone who hasn't actually understood the book.

Foi muito bom jogar, pois para mim que não consigo mais ter uma mesa de RPG ou tempo e grupo para grandes jogos de tabuleiro de fantasia medieval, é como ter parte disso comigo quando eu quiser, não é apenas grindar (a não ser no modo Gauntlet) ou ler uma história, você é colocado em várias situações, onde a solução pode ser a luta, a conversa, passar despercebido ou até mesmo desarmar uma armadilha. Você pode morrer ou ser ferido em muitas situações inusitada, e a primeira vez que ocorre é muito bom. Eu mesmo que joguei o livro, mas já não lembro de muita coisa, vira e mexe me surpreendo muito. O jogo é simples, mas extremamente eficiente para quem gosta de uma boa história, um bom RPG, recomendado!

Nice adaptation of the gamebook with the same name. Designed as a classic tabletop RPG or board game, it is very fun to play and the adventure is challenging enough to be engaging without being frustrating. If you like a good ol' boardgame or a solo D&D adventure this is for you
Like the idea of the game and graphic design but the combat is basically just guessing where the enemy will move and lack of character upgrades makes the game boring.
Not for me at all...... adventure and layout seem good, hate the combat though. No fun whatsoever
Perhaps worth it on sale.... Defo NOT full price though

I should have tested it within 7 days of purchase so it could be refunded, of course.
Game works surprisingly well on steam deck. Just don't start the tutorial.
