i know this is an old game, so it makes sense that accessibility was not at the forefront of development, but still, given this game is text based, it should be one of the most accessible games. even removing the page background graphic and adding font size sliders would go a long way to creating a more accessible game. and assuming all of the books use the same engine, this would be a single change.

A respectful digital echo of one of Fighting Fantasy’s stronger entries. It looks nice, sounds right, and does exactly what it promises – nothing more, nothing less. For those who grew up turning numbered pages, it’s a short nostalgic walk. For everyone else, it’s a curiosity that ends once you’ve survived the forest.

Look, I know it's an old book based on a mobile port, but it's a nostalgic novelty at best. The gameplay is basically a Sierra adventure game with a text dump and a still image. You're trying to find two pieces of a hammer and make it out of the forest of doom alive, how annoying could it be? Well there's no indication where either piece of the hammer is, there are about a dozen encounters, most of them all but require you to have the right item at the right time (again: no indication). Or you can have 3 lucky dice rolls in the beginning, look up where the hammer pieces are online, and skip 90% of the game.
It's nice there's a bookmark button to save your progress, but it doesn't have the "♥♥♥♥ this book" button that it needs. That was the mental button we all pressed when our character died on page 200-or-whatever and you just wanted to see what happened at the end. When it's a book you just ignore the part where you died or forgot an item, but when it's a game it's reload and pray to God you remember if you went east or west at the fork 10 minutes ago, or you restart and run into this problem in 30 minutes.
Not only is this an inferior medium than the original, it's just not worth your time when you could play the 10,000 other story based games on Steam that are better.
It's a nice choose-your-own-adventure book-like game. Unique in its presentation but very lacking in story and characters.

El juego recrea el libro en el que se basa, pero en formato digital. Lo recomiendo sobre todo si te quieres iniciar en los juegos de rol, como es mi caso.
La historia es simple y quizás puede resultar poco inmersiva, pero lo he disfrutado porque eso mismo me ha permitido entender bien el funcionamiento del sistema de puntos, tiradas, etc. Además, el apartado de los "premios" es un plus, te anima a investigar más opciones de la aventura.
[b] Nota: [/b] Los marcadores se acumulan y solo se eliminan cuando reinicias desde "opciones". No tengas miedo de hacer esto porque los premios, las ilustraciones y los lugares desbloqueados del mapa se conservan. Lo único que cambia es el modo de juego que elijas y los puntos de la ficha de tu personaje, que dependen de la tirada que hagas después de ese reseteo.

Достаточно слабый текстовый квест. Виузальный дизайн не примечательный. Боёвка заключается только в бросании кубиков. События довольно коротки и практически не переплетаются друг с другом. История выглядит достаточно стандартно и зацепить ей нечем. Наверное если вы настальгируете по чему то подобному или любитель старых слабеньких текстовых квестов в фентези стилистике, то можете попробовать, но я не вижу в этой игре ничего примечательного.

と、かなり易しめの設計になっている。
また、このゲームは舞台であるダークウッドの森が
かなり細かくルートが作り込まれており、
そのためオートマップ機能で
かなり正確な森の地図を作ることが出来る。
なおタイトルにスタンドアロン版とあるのは、
これとは別にポータル版の同製品もあるため。
スタンドアロン版の特徴としては、

Lol. No, you probably won't. Dis Fighting Fantasy, here m'lad! You can hardly get it right in your first read. That's where the fun is though: you try to visualize, draw the map, optimize the path and scratch your head "why the hell is there a Jar of Acid in that alcove, it is not used anywhere!!"

Old School – not bad.
If you enjoy reading books and have an adventure at the same time with a great story, lovely drawn graphics then you will enjoy this Fighting Fantasy book, small price for many hours of reading and imagination. You can chose either old school graphics for the pages or enhanced page graphics, also old style adventure font or slightly easier read by choosing a modern font . I have started the adventure and you get sucked into the magic world with a great story. Nice touches like the map updates as a sketch in real time. For me the adventure has just started, I will be playing when I get home from work, sit back, relax and enjoy the story unfold and hope I don't make too many bad choices or the dice play nicely with me to beat the monsters and other unsavoury characters I might stumble upon, LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN.
If you ever wanted to see a small part of how it all, here on Steam and beyond, started and gained roots in our moder society, you have to try a game book, and no better game book can be found but the ones created by Jackson & Livingstone at the Game Workshop.
The apparently simple setting, the reading fluidity and the joy of experiencing a true introduction not only to tabletop RPGs but to fantasy gaming in a broad sense will foloow you through the pages of this digital version of the original book that I bought over 20 years ago and, as you do to any proper treasure, passed along to a younger relative to explore and enjoy.
[h1] Classic Gamebook experience [/h1]
This is one of the best Fighting Fantasy Gamebook and it's presented without any fancy add-ins, unlike other games (Starship Traveller or Appointment with FEAR in their standalone versions from the same devs).
You flick pages, go from paragraph to paragraph, sometime see excellent art from the Puffin Edition and try to complete the story!
What's the story? Just get two parts of a war hammer. It's actually quite complicated as the forest is very big and you can easily miss the parts. It's ok because the forest is very well populated (not at all quiet) and there's tons of fun stuff to do and discover.
This is the charm of this gamebook. It can be a bit frustrating and it involves a lot of trial and error but you can beat it easily, especially with the free-read mode which lets you go back easily (unlike having to put your fingers everywhere in the book to know which paragraph you were at the risk of forgetting after a while).
There's no added value to playing this game except maybe that you don't want to damage more your cherished old book from 1983 and prefer to read it in digital version.
I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Gamebooks, it's a nice way to discover the type of gameplay it proposes. The writing is excellent and you can really feel proud of yourself once you beat it! It's a classic for a reason!

It took me back to a think I remembered enjoying as a kid, so if you're looking for that nostalgic hit (and a rather fine game, too), I can't not recommend it ^^
Honestly, this is 100% a nostalgia play. It's aged quite a bit, it's wayy simpler (and shorter) than most of the other available gamebook stories today. But, it reminds me better of the experience playing these on paper books as a child, perhaps because of that simplicity, and for that alone I do recommend it. Bite into the madeleine! :D
what else can I say but that I love this type of "games" (the quotes are there because the concept comes originally from "The Books in which you are the Hero" collection, and I have played quite extensively some of these) .... I like the fact that the devs of either this series of games on steam or the GameBook Adventures series on google play have not tried to change the original concept at all .... you roll the dice and jump from page to page to see what happens next, etc etc .... until you reach one of the endings .... so I strongly recommend these games for anyone who enjoys reading and getting into adventures who leave some space for imagination.
so i got nto my first fight..... i had double the hp of this guy and only one less skll (9 vs 10)
and i died because the enemy just kept rolling higher than me... on my first encounter.... i only managed to hit him like twice and the rest of the time he just kept me because of rng and killed me.
what i thought would have been a fun game and adventure with skillful fights turned out to be nothing more than a dice-rolling simulator that you have literally no way to prepare for because you can't even really control your own stats or distribution aside from literally starting the game over and rerolling your 3 stats.
FYI you want really high skill because this determines who wins the "roll the dice to see who gets hit" aspect of the game.

DO NOT BUY - Tin Man Games have abandoned this (last update 2018) and republished this as CHEAPER DLC under the title "Fighting Fantasy Classics". If you know this series of books, you'll know whether or not you'll enjoy them, and the system will do the dice rolls, track inventory etc for you. But if you are looking at the Store Page for "The Forest of Doom (Standalone)" you want to look for the updated and cheaper version (search for "Fighting Fantasy Classics") instead. Or even download this updated front-end which comes with a free book that you can play-through and see how you feel about these old books. Having said that, the DLC is too expensive wherever you travel, I think the company would do better if they lowered their price points. Maybe also if they respected their customers - You would think purchasers of this standalone version would get a freebie on the updated "Fighting Fantasy Classics" version but nope - if you want it you'll have to pay for it again.
(Another backlog review, this one I finished in 2017, but it's just a Fighting Fantasy port so my memory is pretty clear.)
The Forest of Doom might be the Fighting Fantasy book that suffers the most from being a book and not an actual roleplaying game. Now, to be certain, Forest of Doom came out in 1983, at a time where Wizardry and Ultima had just gotten their 3rd installments and very few good CRPGs had been made yet, so I don't blame Ian Livingstone for not making this a CRPG at the time.
...but in the modern day, it's really lacking. Forest of Doom is about exploring a forest laid out in more or less a grid pattern, looking for two pieces of a legendary weapon you're trying to deliver to the city beyond the titular forest. In an actual RPG, you could likely explore around and deal with stuff until you found both parts or perished, but since this is a book, it can't really handle backtracking, so if you don't take the two paths the hammer pieces happen to be on during your trip through the Darkwood Forest, you're essentially walking dead, as you'll just be informed that you've failed once you reach the end.
On the plus side, this version apparently has a better map of the forest than the Fighting Fantasy Classics version, though I still don't think I'd recommend it in either edition. The Forest of Doom just really needs an adaptation to something more like Fighting Fantasy Legends or something like one of the many more RPG-ish implementations of Warlock of Firetop Mountain in order to be worth a recommendation.

As a kid, choose your own adventure books always seemed kind of magical to me. The idea of reading a "regular" old book with possibilities to make your own decisions and experience various outcomes was incredibly exciting for me. And much of that appeal is present in gaming in general. Despite some games having more of a linear nature, everyone will have somewhat of a unique experience in all but the tightest of "corridor games". We get to live out adventures and interact with untold variety of different worlds and have an impact on them.
With all that gaming has to offer, it was only a matter of time before someone would merge the CYOA novel with the digital entertainment that so many of us love, and that's exactly what we have in The Forest of Doom - a digitized version of an earlier physical book. In terms of the narrative, it's nothing fancy or exceptional, but it gets the job done as standard fantasy fare. The mood is set nicely by an epic-feeling, if overly short and looping, soundtrack. There are a nice variety of pieces of still-frame art to add flavor to some of your encounters. I didn't find them to be great artistically, but they were good enough to add to the sense of place, creating a deeper level of involvement than text alone. Overall, the presentation was quite well done and I found it to be engaging. There are a large amount of items to collect and use, some of which can be pretty important in completing your quest. I really appreciated the in-game map, which helped you keep a sense of your bearings on repeat plays as you tried to find the two missing items needed in order to complete the story. The dice-roll combat was classic old-school, and while not incredibly exciting, it did up the drama a bit in particularly tight encounters.
There are some things I had issue with in this game. Firstly, the fact that you couldn't retrace your steps was frustrating. I'd have like the option to turn around and go back from whence I came, although I suppose this is true to the original. But it also makes it easy to hit a dead-end where you are funneled to the climax without any possibility of "winning", and that's an annoyance necessitating starting over. Also, much of your prospects for success can be hampered or enhanced by your initial dice rolls for your stats, giving maybe too much weight to the initial set up. And if you strip away the interactive elements, the concept of choice, you're really just left with a middling (generously speaking) fantasy story. Yet, there's something nostalgic in this type of experience, albeit in digital form. I can't say I was blown away, but I did enjoy my time with it, and I think the genre has potential. I'll check out more of what this niche brings to the table down the road. A 3/5.

A great adventure that takes me waaaaay back to playing the original book and loving the creatures that were encountered within. I heartily recommend this game, as it has all of the features and illustrations of the original but in a fantastic new format. And if you're a first time adventure game book player, then this is one you should start with :)

정말 게임책으로 게임하는 기분이 들었습니다.
뒤로 돌아가는게 불가능하기 때문에 초반에 길을 잘못 드는 경우 아~예 처음부터 다시 시작해야하는 고통이 따릅니다.
나중가면 제대로 된 엔딩을 보기 위해 엄청난 뺑뺑이를 돌게 되는데 이게 엄청 힘듭니다.

전쟁망치 2파츠를 다 모으지 못한다면 다시 플레이해야합니다.. 와.. 엄청 삥삥 돌았네요..
UI가 상당히 불편한 편이라 계속 루트 확인을 위하여 일일히 지도를 계~속 펼쳐봐야한다거나
초반에 아이템 쓰는 법을 몰라서 헤맸는데 마우스 아래로 내리면 인터페이스 나옵니다..
그걸로 포션같은 아이템 사용하세요..

Read and played the book when I was younger so this updated version for steam is great nostalgia. I hope they can bring similar versions of other books out too!

Great emulation of the original game book - I've just today managed to get to the end and win while drawing a paper map like back when I was 13! I was feeling nostalgic and decided to reinstall it today because I'd finished painting the Shapechanger Miniature yesterday (Pandaemonium Miniatures on Facebook, Insta etc). The paper map meant I could succeed on my loop-around - going to draw out a neat version and might post a pic here.

Ist natürlich schon ziemlich Retro, da das Spiel dem Original Fighting Fantasy Spielbuch aus den 80er Jahren entspricht. Ich habe es parallel mit der deutschen Übersetzung in Form des echten Spielbuchs "Der Forst der Finsternis (Goldmann Verlag)" gespielt. Das funktionierte ganz gut, weil die Nummerierungen im deutschen Buch und diesem Spiel absolut identisch sind. Wer also noch über das Buch verfügt aber des Englischen nicht ganz so mächtig ist, kann das Spiel trotzdem sehr gut spielen.

Never been a fan of book games, I like the concept but I found them too weird.
Also the fact that the sounds are either ON or OFF in an Unity engine, seems to me the devs didn't wanna put the time and only wanted to get the re$ult out of their creation.
A book game should also be translated into different languages.

I've played through a couple times. It puts me to sleep but that's just me.
A pretty good adaption with some very minor flaws. Got pawned by the Fire Demon on my first run and so i sought revenge. I eventually beat him, put on his crown and the game proceeds to tell me that i have become the new Fire Demon.

It's fun, but expect to be screwed over at every turn. Mostly due to your own curiosity. It has many different paths, items and secrets which change the course of every run.
Just the way the game immerses you in the story is worth it. Loved every page. Repeating and repeating the game does not make it monotonous bc u need to know more. An incredible experience

The Forest of Doom is a fun choose your own adventure in which you, an adventurer, find a dying dwarf named Bigleg who was on a quest to find The Hammer for The Lord of Stonebridge. The Hammer is an important weapon that the lord needs to unite his people so that they may defend themselves against the Trolls.
As an adventurer you roll for your stats, have a map that automatically marks locations you have been to, an adventure sheet with a list of your items and potions, as well as a bookmark option so you can backtrack and make new choices.
Time to finish varies between people, 1-5 hours. Overall an excellent and satisfying game.

I mean it's a choose-your-own adventure book with some dice animations. It feels very 80s DnD(the original book was published in 83), where every enemy is some grotesque goblin/ape-man/monster and you're a GUY with a SWORD to KILL THE MONSTERS. 90% of the choices boil down to 'you found a thing! Yay!' or 'OH NO, there's a monster! roll to fight!'
It's not terrible, and I didn't run into any bugs or anything, but unless you like old-school barely-there fantasy plots and text adventures there's not a lot here. Definitely wait for a sale if it's the kind of thing you're looking for.
So this review comes with a 'No, but' disclaimer: Forest of Doom didn't lie about what it was. It does the thing it says it's going to do. But if you want the nostalgia of the original RPG books, it's been republished and sold as a physical book for about the same price as here on steam.
It's a cool game to play if you like interactive books
It's more a book then a game. All fights are implemented by rolling the dice. Therefore, you are not able to follow any strategy during fights. However, you can click the left mouse button at the last moment to reroll the dices (it may be a cheat, but it can save your time). Sometimes there is no any logic in your choices (e.g. a bitter potion could be both a poison and a cure). Moreover, be ready to start the story from the very beginning, because you have to be a very lucky person to finish this game by the only attempt. I had about 5 runs to accomplish the main quest and go through all paths (it took about 12 hours). I think that it’s a good game for English learners who are tired of ordinary books. I’m about intermediate student and the book was easy to read (of cause, you find a lot of new words but grammar is not difficult).

Terrible, only possible to recommend to people who want to know how awful some fighting fantasy game books were from the 80s. This game perfectly recreates the book that was an unplayable mess. A perfect recreation only makes this book that much more painful to play.
There are too many absurd and random broken mechanics in this game book to list. The theme is terrible the abuse of the player absurd and the solution idiotic, exactly like in the original game book.
That being said the book playing software works as expected...
This is a reasonable facsimile of the old Fighting Fantasy interactive paperback RPG gamebook from Ian Livingstone. Read the book passages, make decisions, roll the dice to defeat your enemies.
The asking price is a little high but for nostalgia purposes this might be worth picking up when on sale, it's worth killing a few hours for a few dollars with this.

- Quality of adaptation: Had the physical copy of the book as a kid. It's just such a nostalgic trip, and an amazing feeling to play it on Steam - much more optimized compared to having to use pen, paper and die back then. The parameters really make adventuring easier, everything is computed and organized as it should. The universe is still as gripping and immersive. The original illustrations have been colorized though, something I personally could have done without but it's a nice touch. There is also a gallery of the original art included.
- Systems: skill-wise you have Health (called Stamina) and Combat Strength like in any other RPG. The scores are added/compared to dice results. However bear in mind that Luck per se is also literally a skill (used in combat to perform the equivalent of crits or dodges in dire situations...) AND a core parameter in this game so... Do you really want to go pick up that glittering item at the bottom of a well? It might be a game changer, or it might signify instant doom. You will only know if you try!
- Entertainment value: All in all, if you like RPGs and want to have a fun time with a friend/your SO, get the game and feel the pressure of an OG hardcore unforgiving adventure for an afternoon.

Classic fantasy, nothing too original in that regard, although the gust of nostalgia can be felt even by those who never played it as children (including me). You can't help but feel deeply immersed in the engrossing world of Titan, where orcs, elves, fiends will roam in the most beautiful of sceneries. But what about Forest of Doom? Well, in this one, your job is to stop a war between two factions... Or die before that. Or get completely side-tracked by an optional dungeon. The thing I like the most however, is that the punishment of failing is restricted to starting over with your inventory intact, so you can tackle routes you didn't explore before and, hopefully, gather all the stuff you need.
- [b]The Soundtrack[/b] may be forgettable by some, but from my point of view, it does a good job in conveying the mystic atmosphere of the forest.
- [b]The Bookmarks[/b] are a welcomed implementation, especially for those people who despise being punished too much (and in that case, why are you even play a FF gamebook!) These are, in short, save/load states
- [b]Highly faithful[/b] to the original Ian Livingstone's work. The art and the text are both the same as the book (with the addition of optional full-colored illustrations, achievements, and all that sort of videoludic stuff that doesn't ruin the experience and it simply improves it).
- [b]The original artworks[/b], again, is there and it's simply brilliant. [spoiler]As a sidenote, I still wonder why Scholastic has managed to renew the FF license and yet they used some of the ugliest illustrations ever to replace the old ones, they ruin the whole experience! Just rambling about the paper versions here, don't mind me.[/spoiler]
- [b]Everything is reminiscent of the 80s, yet, this videogame edition is not "overdone"[/b]. I still had to mention some other great features, that we now take for granted but trust me - it wasn't this way, in the old paper age. You can consult anytime you want, in-game, a colorful map, there's a simple, automatic inventory system, and all that good gamebookish stuff but revamped. I know it's a bit of a stretch as a point, but trust me, looking at how the videogame industry is doing things these days, they may have ruined something like that too... But Tin Man Games, doesn't disappoint.
- Aside from [b]Retro Mode[/b] (switching on the fly between black and white view or colored view, both for text and illustrations), there's also something that both nostalgics and new players will enjoy. The [b]different game modes[/b] are there for every palate: Free Read (aka good old Cheating), Adventurer (aka Mediumcore / Original Experience) and Hardcore (Perma-Death).
- [b]It's "simplified" for the good reasons[/b]. By now it's clear. The majority of Fighting Fantasy books were never too abstruse, and now, with this rendition right here, this is all the more true. You just need to get involved with the plot, make your choices, buy the stuff you want, manage your resources wisely, fight with dices, test your luck, explore optional dungeons, etc.; all without the need to take notes, nor draw a map. Those things are already there, no need to make everything more complicated than it already is/was (at first glance, obviously. It's actually a pretty straightforward experience "strategy"-wise and gameplay-wise). So, all in all, Forest of Doom (Standalone) truly gets the soft spot between punishing and rewarding, without being too convoluted.

- [b]The re-roll dice feature/bug[/b]. For some reason, you can click your mouse while the dice are rolling (and even in the split second when they land) in order to re-roll the dice. This makes the "Luck" stat and the various events easier if not useless. If one wants to be rigorous about the whole premise of dice rolling, this is a pretty blasphemous thing to add into your game, even if it wasn't deliberate. I don't know, that's one thing I really didn't like.
- [b]...The Bookmarks[/b]. One may argue that it makes the game easier, and that's true, but that's beyond the point since there are different difficulty settings. The thing that perplexes me is that you can't delete them, and so you pretty much always have a ridiculously long list of bookmarks in each playthrough. Apparently it's a thing that bothered some other users too, and I don't see why deleting them isn't an option.
- [b]...The Inventory System[/b] is truly well done, but I would've liked a little description for the plethora of items you often carry around with you. I can be pretty forgetful at times, and overall it would be nice to just hover your mouse to an item name and get a brief phrase telling me what it does, how much it is worth, and whatnot (this also applies, in a sense, to the map and the icons within). Sometimes this is comprehensible for the plot's sake, but oftentimes you know what a thing does only the moment when you pick it up, and then... Good luck remembering about it. Luckily, it's almost a non-issue because when the moment to use an item arises, the book will tell you so.

[u]It's probably the best FF gamebook available on Steam right now: it was already a fan favorite back in the day, and seeing it today in this revamped fashion is just a feast for the eyes. The execution is almost flawless, it's faithful, the optional dungeons are a nice touch, the foes and their respective interactions (fighting, talking, etc.) are well made and don't drag for too long, the sudden deaths aren't too punishing (and you can often see them coming) and most importantly the story. Boy, this gamebook is great. Just get it already, the negative points is just nitpicky stuff anyway.[/u]

Recommending, but only to fans of the original book.
Not because the game itself has issues (although it is very bare-bones) but because The Forest of Doom is the first "open map" book in the Fighting Fantasy series, and also Ian Livingstone's first solo volume - and it certainly shows.
The Good:
* There are no "You died" sections in this adventure. You always get a fighting chance.
* There are quite a few interesting and quirky encounters.
* Some of Malcolm Barter's original art is really good.
* It is probably the easiest Fighting Fantasy book ever written.
The Bad:
* Despite all the roads leading to your destination, there is only one correct route that actually lets you complete your quest.
* There are several sections that are just padding, with no story implication or choice. For example, you cannot go South, or backwards, so any section with a junction that would turn you South will simply tell you to move on.
* Some of Malcolm Barter's original art is really bad.

Loved reading this book as a kid and I've been enjoying playing this on my pc. For me though, nothing beats having the actual book, with a pen, dice and paper, and playing the book how it should be played. Never the less, a really enjoyable blast from the past!
This is basically a computerised version of the "Fighting Fantasy" book of the same name that came out in the 1980's: A simple role-playing game in the style of D&D for one player where you guide yourself through the forest of doom by picking which path to take at different points which then determines what happens next in the story. Every so often there are fights or challenges that are resolved with dice rolls where the success chance depends on your skills and then you may die because you met a challenge that was too hard.
If you played the book back when it came out, this is pure nostalgia. Of course if you used to cheat with the dice or by looking ahead at where the different choices would lead to, you are going to find this version a little harder.
An amazing choose your own adventure book adapted into a PC game. The Gameplay is easy to learn and lot's of unexpected things happen all the time. Pretty fun.
The game is short enough for repeat playthroughs to not be boring. I heavily recommend this game if you don't mind books/visual novels.

I love the retro feel and the style of this digital version of a classic choose your own adventure gamebook. There is enough variety and different endings to keep me playing multiple times.
It's simple gameplay and graphics, which may not be good enough for some gamers, but I like the simplicity and story-driven gameplay.

This is more of a digital recreation of the original fighting fantasy book than a true interactive game, however it was an enjoyable trip down memory lane and I wish they would release more in the series. If you liked the fighting fantasy books or choose your adventure books then I think you should like this.
A good adaptation of the old Fighting Fantasy book. The music is a bit off-putting, but you can easily replace this by listening to something else while you play (tracks from the Witcher 2 soundtrack work well). There is quite a bit of trial and error in this book, so having tool-tips that would show the names of encounters on the map would be good. There are a few bugs (menu problems, and an encounter in the well that does not reset), but overall this was good for nostalgia, and entertaining to play through.
A good adaption of the choose your own adventure classic, only thing to add would be character transferal to their other Fighting Fantasy games, but I understand if they didn't want to do that.
I would recommend it to fans of FF old an new, and may your luck never run out! ;)
Fine conversion of the Fighting Fantasy game book.
If you roll a "6" on your starting skill roll, you will be neigh unstoppable. If you roll a "1" you will die quickly. Still some fun reading through and the implementation and bookmark system (although I didn't really use it) are good.
This is a must have if you enjoyed the FF books! Not a perfect implementation, but enough for this genre.

This "game" can be summed up as "Roll a couple of digital dice until you lose". I managed to get to the dwarf village by cheating, only to find out i would have to start all over again because i took the wrong path somewhere.
Aside from being boring and poorly designed, it's also a lazy product. There are no volume sliders, you can only turn music or effects on and off. Pressing escape in a menu doesn't close it but makes you exit the game. And for some bizarre reason you can't see what you're choosing in the menu that pops up because it obscures your cursor. Yeah, hard pass.

There could be three achievements based on how much gold players collect.
Haven't you noticed, that the biggest flaw of this gamebook is that there is basically just one way how to successfully pass it? The other ways are pointless, but you could have changed it with these achievements. You could have even changed the values of the individual treasures to optimize the gameplay.
+ you could have let hero start again, keeping some stuff that he has found during his previous unsuccessful try. Finally you can do this cause this is not a book, so you have the necessary flexibility. Why can't we keep at least the handle from the hammer, so we could go another way in the beginning and explore the forest in one adventure????? Do you get my meaning? You could have even edited the individual encounters - like if I killed the Ogre and goblin during my last attempt, send me directly to the after-fight page if I enter the cave again.
+ I collect gold all the time. So why won't you let me use it for shopping after I get back to the beginning around the forest, instead getting new 30 gold pieces from the Dwarf? If I didn't want that, I can just restart the game, cause that is what happens now if you take the round trip.

A good on-screen production of one of the iconic Fighting Fantasy gamebooks.
This game is set in the FF continent of Allansia and you must travel to the dangerous Darkwood Forest to find both pieces of a fabled hammer, then return it to the dwarves in Stonebridge.
Ian Livingstone's original book has really been brought to life here. The game is exactly as it woz (all those years ago!) and not only are the original b&w artworks here, but full colour versions as well. The nostalgic feel of the game is spot-on.
There are options for background music and sound effects, as well as a great series of 31 achievements ranging from difficult to amusing. There are also Steam trading cards for this game.
Unlike many FF games this one has an interesting mechanism which helps if you have missed items simply by taking the wrong route and are unable to complete the quest. At the end of the forest you are able to return to the start, with some (but not all) things retained, to try a new route.
This game is not particularly combat heavy, but does require specific path choices to find certain info and items required to succeed.
TinManGames have produced five of the original FF games as standalone titles (more about them elsewhere) and this is a very nice adaption.

Really enjoyed this, a very accurate reproduction of the book - playing it certainly took me back to my childhood! Definitely recommended for fans of Fighting Fantasy, especially so if you can pick it up in a Steam sale.

AHH FEEL THE NOSTALGIA!
As a child growing up in the 80's and being a big reader it was a labour of love saving up money to buy every fighting fantasty book as they came out. This was my first purchased fighting fantasy book so it still holds a special place in my heart. Forest of Doom was in the typical setting of most of the fighting fasntasy books. Tin Man games has done a great job of transferring this book to the computer. If you enjoyed fighting fantasy books back in the day then I highly reccommend you pick this up for your self or your children.
There is very little text in between too many uninteresting fights. The French translation is rather [url=http://steamcommunity.com/app/270490/discussions/0/624076027532423403/]poor[/url]. The gameplay during fights is driven by too much pointless randomness. The music is extremely repetitive. There are better gamebooks by Tin Man Games, e.g. « [url=http://store.steampowered.com/app/335460/]An Assassin in Orlandes[/url] ».
Se você conheceu os gamebooks (Fighting Fantasy), vai adorar essa proposta de versões totalmente digitais e remodeladas de seus títulos, mantendo a essência dos RPGs originais, lançados na década 1980.
Se você não conheceu, Fighting Fantasy é uma coleção de gamebooks do gênero RPG no qual você joga sozinho, sendo necessário dois dados (d6) e sua ficha de personagem, você lê o livro tomando decisões para seu héroi e definindo a trajetória de sua aventura, enfrentando diversos tipos de inimigos e desafios, nesse livro YOU are the hero!
The Forest of Doom é uma grande aventura, altamente recomendado!!!
