could've been great or at least okay, but legendary game designer ron gilbert dropped the ball on this one. it's an adventure/platformer with some quirky characters doing their own thing, but only being able to carry a single item at a time makes everything incredibly tedious. (ignore my runtime, played it offline.)

the other issue is each playthrough requires 3 characters, a'la maniac mansion, but there are 7 total, so if you want to experience all their stories (because that part is fine, almost double fine), the third run will offer very little new and it's not possible to skip anything. would be bad enough, but only about half the levels are character-specific, so even the second time will mostly be about repeating things.

This is one of the best puzzle games I've played back in the day. The cave is an adventure 2d puzzle platformer. You can play with three of your friends via local co-op, or alone, but in either case, you must choose three of the seven available characters. Each character has a backstory and a unique method to solve the puzzle. The main objective is to explore The Cave and unlock its secrets!

The narrator is hilarious. I enjoyed the dark humor and the character's way of solving puzzles; it is always a disaster. I highly recommend playing it with a controller, as the keyboard was quite difficult for some physics-based puzzles that involve using items you find around you. Based on the characters you choose, you are going to solve a unique level of their own with their special ability, which always comes in handy.

The atmosphere can be eerie at times, and the soundtracks are well-suited to each stage's setting. There are collectibles for each character, which gives the game high replay value; each run with a different character is completely different from the previous one.

Since there are seven characters, the last gameplay would feel repetitive since you'd use two of the previously cleared characters along with the last one, which you haven't experienced yet. I found this run longer than the others, even though I already knew how to solve the puzzles. I still recommend this game to my friends. I wish it had online co-op; it would have been more fun to play with friends online.

Ich erinnere mich daran, dass das Spiel optisch nett, von den Storys her cool und kreativ in der Aufmachung mit 7 Charakteren war. 3 soll man wählen und deren Geschichte erleben.

Ich weiß aber auch, dass es echt, echt träge zu spielen war. Viel backtracking, viel langsames vor sich herwatscheln. In manchen Spielen kann das genau der Charme sein, aber hier hat es mich doch sehr gestört. Wenn mich jemand nach einem guten Puzzle-Adventure-Story-Platformer-whatever fragen würde, würde ich nie an dieses Spiel denken. Es ist nicht schlecht - es hat tolle Anteile, aber ich würde es nicht explizit empfehlen.

The game is built around seven characters, each with their own story, and you choose three to play with. This setup should encourage replaying the game to see the remaining stories, but personally I didn’t feel motivated to replay it. The main reason is the puzzle design: some puzzles are weird in a good way and require thinking outside the box, but figuring out the solution often takes too long. Large areas, slow character movement, and constantly having to move all three characters manually make the experience feel tedious. Even when playing co-op, it still felt boring at times.

The strongest part of the game is the story, the character backstories, and the sarcastic narrator, which give the game its charm. These elements are more memorable than the puzzles or the gameplay itself.

I also had trouble launching the game at first on Windows 11. Steam would show “Launching” for a few seconds, then go back to the Play button. I tried several fixes, including installing older Microsoft Visual C++ versions and DirectX 9, but none of those worked. Dont delte anything from the sys folders just put d3dx9_43.dll and d3dcsx_43.dll inside the folder where the exe is, the files came even in folder inside your download folder, TheCave\Redist\DirectX you can both extract and it should work.
cause games normaly check first the folder then the sys folders.

С первой же минуты The Cave создаёт совершенно особое настроение. Это не мрачное подземелье в классическом понимании, а странный, живой организм, полный чёрного юмора и иронии. Пещера не просто фон — она полноправный персонаж, которая с едва скрываемым сарказмом комментирует каждый ваш шаг и поступки героев. Это создаёт уникальный контраст: визуально игра выглядит ярко и даже дружелюбно, но её повествование раскрывает тёмные, а порой и трагичные истории семи главных героев.

Геймплей, сочетающий в себе элементы платформера и головоломки, был для меня в новинку. Необходимость управлять тремя персонажами одновременно, переключаясь между ними для решения загадок, поначалу казалась сложной, но очень увлекательной. И хотя внешне она выглядит как мультяшное приключение, внутри скрывается довольно мрачная и ироничная история.

Главная находка игры - говорящая (в буквальном смысле) Пещера, которая не просто комментирует происходящее, а будто насмехается надо мной (как игроком) и персонажами, зная о них больше, чем они сами. Этот приём сразу задаёт тон: The Cave не стремится быть героическим приключением, здесь почти нет «хороших» людей. Каждый герой пришёл в пещеру по личным, зачастую корыстным причинам, и именно это становится центром повествования.

Геймплейно игра проста, ну да, 2D-платформинг, простые головоломки, постоянное переключение между тремя выбранными персонажами. Механики не пытаются удивить сложностью - они больше служат инструментом для рассказа, происходящей на экране, истории. И в этом заключается одновременно сильная и слабая сторона.

Персонажи запоминаются. У каждого есть собственная сюжетная линия, раскрывающая его прошлое и моральные изъяны. Причём игра не пытается оправдать героев - наоборот, часто показывает, к чему приводят их решения. Это делает прохождение слегка неуютным, но именно эта неуютность и выделяет игру.

Визуальный стиль. Для своего времени - хорошо. Локации разнообразны и наполнены мелкими деталями, которые усиливают атмосферу абсурда и скрытой жестокости. Музыка и озвучка (русская, скачано сами знаете где) работают на общее настроение: ничего лишнего, но всё на своём месте. Особенно стоит отметить голос Пещеры - он добавляет игре харизмы и юмора (преимущественного чёрного).

Главная проблема игры - повторное прохождение. Чтобы увидеть все истории, игру нужно пройти несколько раз с разными персонажами, и не всем это покажется увлекательным. Новые сюжетные фрагменты компенсируют повторяющиеся уровни лишь частично. Лично прошёл игру 3-и раза, и под конец 3-его было уже нудновато.

Итого-игого: The Cave - это игра не для всех, и она этого не скрывает. Это не динамичный платформер и не сложная головоломка, а скорее ироничное интерактивное повествование, замаскированное под приключение. Смело рекомендую её за идею, атмосферу и смелость быть странной :)

It stopped on the loading screen, and just once I could also see the menu options.

TL:DR: This game is irritatingly slow, clunky, buggy, badly written, and boring.

Note: I originally played this on Playstation 3 back when it originally released. My play time here doesn't represent my true playtime. I beat the game several times originally and found it irritating the entire time (I didn't have internet as a teen so I had to play out the games I had). I figured my opinion would soften now I'm more patient, but no, this game really does just suck.

Everyone goes nuts for Double Fine's writing as being top tier but the only example of that that holds up is Psychonauts. Every other game I've seen or played by them feels half baked and mediocre at best. This one especially suffers from something I see beginner writers go through: their smug edgy fourth wall breaking phase. I went through it too. But this game is written entirely in that voice.

I'll break it down more specifically:

1: The Cave itself talks in nothing but smug mocking nonsense about you and the characters you're playing. On its own that suits the evil dungeon master vibe of The Cave but the way he tells the jokes comes off like he's trying to be funny to the player when all he'd doing is cracking incredibly lame jokes that make him sound like an idiot, not a villain to be feared.

2: Every character that speaks, including The Cave itself, make a lot of plays on words that are forced and stupid. Like The King in the Knight's story talking about his daughter being "hard to swallow" when referring to how The Knight won The Princess's heart. This phrase is not something anyone would normally use in this context and the way he says it makes it sound like he's in on the joke too but playing along to make you feel bad? Which, okay, maybe makes sense because he's part of The Cave's stuff so maybe The Cave is being weird through him, but if that's the case it's just another example of point 1 above.

3: The characters themselves never really express themselves. It's all tell don't show with The Cave narrating everything. They're just figures we pilot around the puzzles that don't respect your time and involve constant backtracking using movement that feels stiff and unresponsive. On its own, their lack of agency could be a neat plot point in how they aren't really the arbiters of their own fates, but the Narrator talks about them as if they're making terrible choices when there is no choice in them. You're railroaded into doing the wrong thing and then mocked for it like it's your fault. It's not like it's a reveal that we actually messed up or that what we wanted was somehow wrong or has a terrible cost. It's like the saying "you can't say yes to something you can't say no to," except in this case it's that we're being mocked for something we had no choice not to do unless we just don't want to continue the game. "Here, eat this cake that's going to end the world." Then throw on top of that that the mocking The Cave gives is so lame as above. "Oh you ate the cake that ends the world, now the world has ended. I guess you really let them eat cake, huh? Hahaha."

Double Fine at its best, selling a game which wont launch. Offering Zero help!

Game plays a video, crashes. Game starts...crashes, trying to restart...CRASH
fourth time...it starts YES....ohnoo there is another cutscene...crash!

So for what i saw it was kinda cool, but i wont fight to a game which isnt working anymore out of the box and waste more time.

I had The Cave in my wishlist for a long time. I do not know what my expectations were for this game but I do not think I have played many games like it. Its short, funny and simple but tells a clear narrative that is absolutely enjoyable. If you love nostalgic games and have liked Psychonaughts but want a smaller game with replay value - The Cave is great. There are some great voice actors for such a minimal script. The graphics hold up to this day and the dry humor is classic. I played through 3 times in one sitting to get all endings I was interested in. The achievements are some of the best fun - the hidden gem moments in the game. Do not overthink, just play.

I was enjoying it but there's loads of bugs. Characters get stuck in ground and ladders. I also see inconsistencies while playing too. Some of the characters special abilities haven't been thought about because you can get past parts you're not supposed to get past. I had to stop playing due to these things unfortunately.

Such a great little adventure puzzle game. The atmosphere is so well done - dark, comedic and mysterious.
The combinations of playable characters and their specific stories are superbly well done - The twins are my favourite. The music and the animations re top notch as well.

Don't need to wait for a sale.

Déjà réalisé à 100% à l’époque sur Xbox tellement je l’avais adoré, j’ai décidé de replonger dans le gouffre sur PC… et quelle excellente idée ! Sans surprise, je redécouvre avec un énorme plaisir ses profondeurs sombres, étranges… et franchement hilarantes.

Chaque personnage apporte sa petite dose de folie, l’exploration est toujours aussi savoureuse et l’humour mystérieux de la caverne me fait encore sourire comme la première fois. L’aspect dessin animé mignon est chouette et réussi - comme quoi, certaines petites aventures vieillissent vraiment bien !

The Cave é um jogo de aventura em plataforma, onde o jogador vai explorar uma caverna misteriosa, logo de início você precisa escolher 3 personagens para explorar a caverna dentre os 7 que tem e cada um desses personagens tem seus motivos para querer entrar na caverna misteriosa que é dito que pode trazer autoconhecimento ou riqueza caso consiga chegar no destino desejado na caverna.
Com os 3 aventureiros selecionados você começa sua aventura na caverna, cada um desses personagens tem sua habilidade única que ajuda a passar por puzzle e desafios que você enfrenta na caverna, você não troca de personagem, mas sim vai revezando e movimentando cada um dos 3 e é necessário utilizar os 3 para conseguir progredir na campanha.
Com um visual carismático, detalhes da caverna, iluminação, tudo isso é muito belo e bem entregue na proposta do game, o próprio design do personagem passa a ideia da sua personalidade e a habilidade que ele tem. A ambientação sonora é muito bem feita mesmo não tendo nenhuma melodia marcante na jogatina, mas ele é excelente na execução de trazer o sentimento naquele momento da caverna através do som.
Na caverna existem algumas áreas fixas e existem outras 3 áreas que é determinado para cada personagem que você levar na sua exploração, então para conhecer todas as possibilidades da caverna é necessário concluir o game 3 vezes, isso de toda forma não é ruim, mas conforme eu fui jogando já na primeira vez eu senti que o jogo ia ficando "cansativo" e "chato", perde a empolgação no meio do caminho, mesmo sabendo que não é um jogo longo para se concluir, como fui atrás das conquistas eu senti isso pesar a cada vez que adentrava na caverna e isso eu diria que é a pior coisa que um jogo pode fazer, tirar o interesse de jogar ele.

Dificuldade para pegar todas as conquistas [2/10]
Levei 15h para desbloquear todas as conquistas, aqui você vai precisar acompanhar algum guia para pegar a maioria das conquistas, pois muitos delas são situacionais do personagem correto no lugar certo da caverna para ser feito. Então existem casos que você precisa entrar na caverna com determinada combinação de personagens, como exemplo o guerreiro, viajando do futuro e o Hillbilly para conseguir pegar uma determinada conquista.
Existem 84 coletáveis espalhadas pela caverna, sendo que é 12 para cada personagem, não tem a necessidade e pegar tudo em uma única jogada, pois ela é acumulativa. E também cada personagem conta com 2 fins então é necessário zerar 2 vezes com cada personagem. E na sua segunda conclusão é o momento perfeito para tentar concluir a caverna sem que seus 3 personagens morram na caverna, após zerar com cada personagem você já fica ciente dos perigos do jogo então essa conquista não é muito difícil de ser conseguida.

Lo jugué en la ASUS ROG Ally: corre finísimo a 10 W en modo portátil y se siente igual a 15 W cuando lo conectas al monitor; el control de Xbox responde sin un solo drama.

Este “metroidvania de humor negro” sigue brillando pese a los años. Seleccionas tres personajes (hay siete en total) y, según tu trío, la cueva abre secciones exclusivas. Para ver todo tendrás que terminarlo 5-6 veces, pero cada vuelta dura lo justo y casi siempre te suelta algún chiste. Hay puzzles muy ingeniosos que obligan a combinar las habilidades de los tres héroes… y un par que parecen diseñados por un adolescente con resaca, pero nada que arruine la experiencia.

No esperes un shooter a lo Halo; esto va de explorar, resolver y reírte de tu propia torpeza cuando empujas la dinamita en la dirección equivocada. Si buscas algo distinto, con personalidad y lo pillas rebajado, es compra segura.

Dato curioso: Cada personaje tiene un final “bueno” y otro “malo”… la cueva no olvida ni perdona.

The game was darker than I expected. I stopped playing after a part where [spoiler]you open a gate that was trapping a dragon, the dragon escapes, and then you go through a bloodstained tower where the dragon has slaughtered everyone. When you reach the top you see a princess being eaten by the dragon.[/spoiler] While gruesome, what made me turn off the game was the narrator cracking tasteless jokes about it the whole time.

游戏是挺有意思的，很小的时候在其他地方玩过一点，最近又翻出来玩了
每一个角色的特性有不同，相同的关卡有着不同的解法，不同的角色在专属关卡里也有不同的表现
但是话说在前头，卧槽啊，这七个人各个都是不同领域的出生啊，出生之家游戏版体验内容be like
不过这个游戏我已经走了两个完整周目了，我觉得有的角色的技能泛用性真的太差了
相当于是，你不在这个角色的特殊关卡上，无异于是无异于，没啥用
个人推荐一周目带骑士，无敌技能，就是好使，出事了就开无敌能奈我何
和尚就当做附属工具人吧，这个人的技能我目前真没感觉有什么用，除了自己的关卡
谜题总体上不是很难，但是有的提示会在旁白说的话里，不是很懂英语的话还是比较麻烦的，可以找一下补丁
ps.有的成就，神坑，一周目不是看攻略就是做不成
pps.有两个硬性成就，走全好和全坏，一次三个人，你最少也得走五个周目，这点也很麻烦

I played The Cave when it released 12 years ago. I remember I was impressed by the game at the time. I replayed it again now, in 2025, made two playthroughs. The game still holds in some senses. The graphics are good enough, the sound and narration are excellent, it is funny, and its fun to play at least one or two playthroughs. The downside is that it is too easy for my taste, there is too much backtracking in the puzzles, and if you want to see all the endings you need to finish the game at least 6 times. This would not be a problem if the game changed somehow everytime you play it. To be fair, it changes since you will be using different characters that activate different puzzles, and the characters have different powers that allow you to tackle some minor puzzles differently. However, from your third playthrough you will be repeating the same character puzzles! Moreover, there are standard puzzle segments that are always the same in each playthrough, so you will do them six times. Well, it gets boring very quickly!

Do I recommend The Cave? Yes! But be aware that you need to finish it 3 times to play all the puzzles and 6 times if you want all the endings. I think most people will want to finish 2 or 3 times and see the other endings on youtube.

[h2]An Adventure Game with a Platforming UI (Not a Failed Platformer)[/h2]

People complain that [i]The Cave[/i] isn't a fun platformer—and I agree. But I think they’re missing the point. The platforming here isn’t the point. It’s a [b]user interface[/b]—a different skin over what is, underneath it all, a very traditional [b]adventure game built around environmental puzzles and character-specific storylines.[/b] It’s not supposed to feel like [i]Super Mario with narrative[/i]. It’s an experiment in how to tell an adventure story without point-and-clicking your way through dialog trees.

And I think the experiment works.

This game tells seven full stories—some funny, some dark, some unexpectedly moving—[b]almost entirely without dialogue.[/b] There are quips and one-liners, but they all come from the narrator, who may or may not be the Cave itself (it's never made explicit). The characters themselves are [i]silent[/i], but their arcs are complete. Their personalities come through in how they move, what they do, what they face. It’s a Ron Gilbert game that’s [b]narratively restrained[/b], and somehow it still feels like one of his richest, most complete stories.

Yes, the structure is a mess. You get three character slots per playthrough, and there are seven characters—so you’re signing up for at least [b]three full runs to see everything[/b]. And because the game doesn’t let you skip or alter the big shared puzzle segments between character paths, you’re [i]replaying huge sections of the same material with no variation[/i]. If you want the [i]actual full ending[/i], you need to run [b]each character through twice[/b] to see both their outcomes. That’s [b]six total playthroughs[/b]. For a game with [i]this much replay repetition[/i], that’s just [b]bad design[/b]. Not optional achievements—[i]actual story content locked behind repeat grinds.[/i]

It also means a lot of [b]backtracking[/b], because each character can only carry [b]one item at a time[/b]. No inventory system, no clever shortcuts—just a lot of walking back and forth to move objects around. That’s not ideal, but again, that’s part of the experiment: what happens when you strip away point-and-click conventions and build everything around direct control?

But I still recommend it. [i]The Cave[/i] has one of the most distinct art styles I’ve ever seen in a game—[b]like walking through an animated, three-dimensional diorama[/b]. It’s the kind of art direction that [b]will still look good 20 years from now[/b] (assuming the human race is still here). It’s atmospheric, funny, gently judgmental, and at times surprisingly bleak.

[spoiler]And for once, Ron Gilbert doesn’t use a meta-ending to dodge his own storytelling. No "it was all a game" twist, no simulation shutdown, no ending-as-commentary-on-endings. Just [i]characters who make choices[/i], and a narrator who [i]quietly tells you what those choices say about them[/i].[/spoiler]

It’s not perfect. But [b]it’s a rare, honest experiment that succeeds more than it fails[/b].
It deserved more love than it got. So I’m giving it some now.

The Cave is one of my all-time favorite games ever. I've been playing this game for years & remember my dad getting it for me & I'd play it for hours- maybe even days straight- on my tablet.
We'd go to a cabin in the summer & my chronic migraine/undiagnosed autistic brain just needed funny spooky puzzle game to scratch that itch- & it still continues to do so, for whatever reason.

The humor has stuck with me all this time, & I've actually memorized a large majority of the game's script.
I drew fanart for it once & hope to again, & I still gush about it to my friends.

idk how Double Fine, Ron, or the rest of the gang feel abt it now, but please know this game has meant the world to me over the years.

I think I technically got into this before Undertale, so it may be one of those games that really properly got me into gaming all-together. I started learning how to speedrun & use shortcuts, finding walkthroughs when I needed them (which helped me understand that it's okay to ask for help; smth I struggled with a lot.), & technically achievement hunting, too.

I was interested in Psychonauts because I saw the devs had made one of my favorite games ever, & it's now possibly a special interest for my now-husband & I.

I know I'm just rambling at this point, which is fine.
I think younger me would have freaked out/pos having seen I finally got to leave a review for this game as an adult, 100% it, & got to share this special interest with his husband.

I love the art style, I've memorized a lot of the music, too- & the stories & lessons have stuck with me to this day.
I still get spooked sometimes, & the Twins & Hillbilly segments continue to get me overly emotional today.

If you're not the devs & made it this far: play Double Fine games.

I've played almost all of double fine's games. With exception of Psychonauts and it's sequels, this is my favorite of theirs. The allegory of the cave and what it represents in persons choices is one that really affected me when i was 7. On top of that the cave itself is probably the funniest character i've ever seen in any game. Do yourself a favor and play this game.

The game is super nice :)
The compatibility with m mac is broken though. No sound in the menu and it crashes if you try to continue or start the game on mac

13/27 achievements. To get the other achievements, I'd need to do 4 more playthroughs (each of the 7 characters has two endings, you can only take 3 characters in a playthrough). Maybe I'm going for it, not sure yet.

The game is pretty janky, with pretty bad controls. However, the game is quite fun. Think modern Lost Vikings.
