The most shocking thing about this game for me isn’t the lesbian animals, it’s that someone decided to use RPG Maker to make an RPG and not another horror game. I thought that was illegal now?
Super Lesbian Animal RPG stars one Melody Amaranth, a funny animal fox who decides to become a paladin so she could stay close to her girlfriend Allison, a rabbit and aspiring adventurer. Their lack of innate ability with using mana causes their friend, Claire the cow mage to take a few creative shortcuts to help them along, and that’s about as much of the story that I will talk about. This game has got jokes, a lot of very good ones and it’d be a disservice to spoil any of them.
Just know that when I found out after the fact that this game started out as a My Little Pony fan project, the best response I could give was, “Yeah, that tracks.” It absolutely feels like a legally distinct MLP story, with guest writing from TobyFox. Mostly light, lol-so-random humor, with a few moments of seriousness and psychological character drama to raise the stakes. Also, added lesbianism.
I’m bad at discussing music, but the game’s soundtrack is also very good. The boss fight theme, Beast Bash is easily the stand-out track but Beatrix Quinn’s score adds a lot to the game and is worth listening to on its own.
The gameplay is modeled after the standard template for 80s and 90s era turn-based JRPGs, I’d say most closely to titles like Dragon Quest and Phantasy Star series. SLARPG’s system in particular is built around star power. The more the characters perform actions that align with their role in the party, the more energy they build to perform the big, tide-turning attacks that will decide if you’ll walk away a winner, or crawl away a loser. Also, you can build star-power by making them kiss each other, because lesbians.
The game’s biggest drawback is inherent to its design. If you’re the sort of person who wants a turn based RPG with deep character and party customization, in-depth strategic choices and more demanding fights, then you’ll likely think that SLARPG comes up short. You do have three choices over what sort of particular paladin you want Melody to be, and there are spellbooks with their own abilities, that you can give to the party members as you like. But, the star power system ensures that you’ll never be able to take any party member far beyond their intended flow chart.
Not that you’ll need to worry about min-maxing, because the game’s difficulty is generally forgiving. It does have four optional bosses towards the end of the game, but I wouldn’t go as far as to call them super. I’m on the side that’s okay with bosses being only tough instead of nightmarish, but those of you looking for another Ruby Weapon or Ozma to splatter yourselves against will be disappointed.
Also, SLARPG’s gamepad support isn’t great, a drawback of being made with RPG Maker I’d imagine. You’ll likely have to make or download a custom Steam-input profile before you get comfortable with using a controller. Annoying, but worth putting up with for this game.
If the subject matter didn’t immediately make you nope out of the store page, and you’re in the mood for a beginner friendly RPG with a good sense of humor and a 30ish hour runtime, then you won’t regret picking this game up.
TL;DR: A way better game than something called, “Super Lesbian Animal RPG” has any right to be.

I remember playing the demo for this game several years ago. After having it on the backburner for a while in my library, I was finally able to get around to playing it. I can say with full confidence that this game is a great time, especially for the target demographic. The story is well-written and reminds me of cartoons I would watch in the 2010s. The humor is similar to Undertale - and I mean it in the best way. I found myself chuckling right and left. If you liked games with off-the-wall enemies and jokes like Undertale and Earthbound, you will enjoy game.
The graphics are bright, colorful, cheerful, and overall pleasant to look at. The OST was also well done - some of the boss themes were practically my favorites to listen to! The game itself isn't too difficult other than some optional superbosses that may give you some trouble if you're new to RPGs or gaming in general.
As a member of the LGBT community and someone who enjoys seeing representation, I highly recommend this game! With around 15 hours of gameplay and unique extra sidequests, it is worth it for the price!

Super Lesbian Animal RPG ha sido un juego breve pero que me ha encantado de principio a fin. Tanto su historia y personajes, como jugabilidad, música y aspecto visual me ha encantado y me va hacer recordarlo de aquí a mucho tiempo.
Empezando por su jugabilidad, es un JRPG sencillito (lo normal, teniendo en cuenta que ha sido programado en RPG-Maker) centrado en una mecánica muy divertida: los puntos de estrella. Básicamente, cada uno de los personajes jugables tiene asignado su típico rol de RPG (tanque, healer y DPS) y cada vez que dicho personaje hace una acción relacionada con dicho rol (recibir daño, curar o apoyar a un aliado y hacer daño) consigue un punto de estrella que puede acumular y gastar para realizar ciertas habilidades especiales. Este mecánica resulta muy divertida porque te anima a optimizar a cada personaje para que cumpla con su función lo más a menudo posible para así poder utilizar las mejores habilidades y poder ganar más fácilmente la batalla que estés librando, además de hacer que los combates sean más dinámicos al perder recursos (vida y mana) pero ganar otros (puntos de estrella durante el combate y experiencia para subir de nivel). Con todo eso el combate resulta muy fácil e intuitivo, muy accesible para jugadores novatos, lo cuál creo que es un plus para un juego que pretende ser sencillo y que busca centrarse en su apartado visual y sonoro y en su historia y personajes. En cuanto a la dificultad, no creo que muy difícil, yo no perdido un solo combate y apenas he usado objetos dentro o fuera de las batallas; pero no creo que eso lo haga menos divertido dado que la mecánica de puntos de estrellas te ánima a optimizar incluso los combates más fáciles y el diseño de las mazmorras es lo suficientemente bueno como para que quieras pasártelas en una sola sesión. Hablando de las mazmorras, igual que el combate carecen de reto, pero no creo que les haga falta; el diseño de las mismas es muy intuitivo y te lleva de punto A a punto B con los suficientes desvíos opcionales como para hacerte sentir que estás explorando. Eso si, la música dentro de las mazmorras es una pasada, de las mejores de todo el juego.
El apartado visual también es una maravilla. El diseño de personajes está tan bien diseñado que cada personaje cuenta una historia solo con su aspecto, y el estilo de dibujo de personajes tiene un rollo que entra por los ojos y te enamora al instante. El pixel art de los escenarios y los personajes del mundo tampoco se queda atrás, está lleno de detalles divertidos y hasta los árboles del camino tienen su pizca de carisma que hace que quieras sacar captura de pantalla en cada escena. El único problema que le veo al aspecto gráfico viene dado por el motor del juego, RPG-Maker, el cuál es famoso por (entre otras cosas) no escalar bien el aspecto y proporciones gráficas de sus juegos; esto hace que el juego se vea algo borroso o incluso pixelado al jugarlo a pantalla completa, lo cuál me ha dado mucha pena viendo lo bonito que es a pesar de eso.
Pero sin duda, lo que más me ha gustado del juego es su narrativa. La historia gira entorno a un grupo de veinteañeras que acaban de formar un gremio de aventureras y que se acaban de ver inmiscuidas en una amenaza interdimensional que podría poner en peligro su mundo, lo típico de un JRPG vamos, no es que sea la más llamativa de las premisas. Lo que si es llamativo, y lo que ha hecho que me enamore de este juego, es su narración, sus personajes y los conflictos personales que afrontan y superan en su aventura. Para empezar el juego mantiene un muy buen equilibrio entre su humor (que siempre consigue sacarme, como mínimo, una sonrisa) y momentos de drama que realmente consiguen hacer que te preocupes por los personajes que los viven. Lo siguiente son sus personajes, todos ellos (sin excepción) son interesantes en su diseño y escritura; muchos de los personajes secundarios sirven como punto de aliciente cómico para sacarte una sonrisa cuando los ves (como los muertos vivientes que hacen rolplay de vaqueros, el supervillano jubilado, por poner un par de ejemplo), pero aquellos que toman un papel central en la trama tiene tanto momentos de humor como conflictos interesantes que te hacen preocuparte por ellas. Muchos de estos conflictos se sienten muy reales y hasta cercanos, y se nota que la creadora a volcado bastante de si misma y de sus experiencias al escribirlos; eso hace que sea muy fácil empatizar con los personajes o, directamente, verte reflejado en ellos.
El juego dura poco, unas 12 horas (aunque yo le he echado quince para llegar al máximo nivel y hacer todas las misiones secundarias) y las he disfrutado todas y cada una. Los personajes son geniales y carismáticos, el aspecto gráfico es preciosos, la jugabilidad es divertida y maldigo a la banda sonora por no estar disponible en Spotify. Es, sin duda uno de mis juegos favoritos de los últimos años (y, posiblemente, de mi vida) y estoy deseando ver que es lo próximo que publicara su desarrolladora. El único problema que le veo, a parte de el tema de la resolución y RPG-Maker, es relacionado con los controles de mando: resumiendo, RPG-Maker asigna los controles con los que se juega en sus juegos sin que el jugador o el desarrollador puedan hacer nada; a mi me gusta jugar los JRPG con mando, así que el esquema de controles se me hace raro. Por todo lo demás, vale cada euro y más.

Super Lesbian Animal RPG is one of the games of all time. Dude, you can live out the dream of being a cute, pink, trans fox that has a punk lesbian girlfriend. Melody Amaranth and her girlfriend, Allison Goleta, can kiss each other during battles. Soundtrack is also pretty nice, and the art adds a lot.
The real Super Lesbian Animal RPG was genuinely the friends we made along the way.

The title alone deserves praise. But it also works as a fully functional rpg. Gee, I sure do wonder if the game literally advertising it's lesbian romances is going to be woke.
So fun! Everything is super colorful and the gameplay and storyline is a good time. :) Only played through once so far but planning to do another run someday.

This is the sort of game where I'm just really happy it exists. It's so heartwarming and goofy and unapologetically queer. It made me smile, laugh out loud, tear up, and above all, feel seen.
On the whole, the dominant vibe of Super Lesbian Animal RPG is one of Balance, Passion, and Polish. It is perhaps the most professional feeling RM title I've yet to play, and while it may not have gone above and beyond in any one particular area, it remained absolutely rock solid from beginning to end in a way that not a whole lot of games manage to do.
Mechanically, the game opts for a simple approach, not trying to reinvent the wheel with gimmicks or engage in supremely complex strategy- while this sometimes has the risk of coming off boring or repetitive, SLAR is well tuned and paced to keep the combat and levels constantly in a state of flow, never feeling bogged down with one thing or the other. The game is overall on the easier side, but still offers some decent catch-outs and challenge moments here and there, and never devolves into random button mashing.
Your four-girl band make up the core RPG archetypal characters- a healer, a tank, a spellcaster, and a fighter. The game takes good advantage of a small pool of abilities and synergies between them to get the player into a gameplay loop that feels very satisfying, providing a strong base to build off of with the customization options at play- instead of relegating accessories to simple stat boosts or element/status related effects, they act more like sub-classing options, giving you different abilities, passives or general gameplay modifiers. These options are well spaced throughout the shorter length of the game, managing to keep things fresh throughout.
In addition to bog standard mechanics, SLAR also adds a "star power" gauge which fills up when characters play to their class role and provides a nice "ramping" loop in combat. You don't feel entirely yoked to it, or like the only reason you're doing other things is to charge the star power gauge, so it works out fairly well as a sort of "limit break" function. Notably helping to avert the pitfalls of this kind of thing is that (as far as I recall/out of what I saw) there's no ability that requires the ENTIRE star power meter to use.
Mechanics aside, the real charm of SLAR is the cast and the character writing, both in its overall quality and in how much it sets itself apart from other RPGs. While it might be expectable from the title, the vast majority of the cast is made up of women (and you know, SHOCKINGLY a lot of them are lesbians in this Super Lesbian RPG (tm)).
Some might worry that this would end up with the cast accidentally coming off as flat, but SLAR cleanly avoids this with quality, human writing that's very relatable to anyone who's ever struggled with self worth, love, or LGBTQ identity, among other things. I found myself getting misty eyed or feeling "seen" quite frequently, and I ended up connecting with the cast more deeply than a lot of other RPGs manage. In a sea of games that are afraid to step outside of archetypes or give their characters those human moments, flaws, and feelings, it really stands tall.
Alongside its dramatic strengths, the game manages to keep a constant thread of humour going- well paced and balanced, avoiding falling into the trap of constant absurdism and "funny because its so random" that can sometimes end up overwhelming titles with these particular kinds of media inspirations. The times where it does break into an unexpected beat or sidelines you with something out of left field are well enough spaced to not lose their edge, nor to detract from the more emotional and dramatic character writing.
Aesthetically, SLAR is just absolutely brilliant, featuring gorgeous pixel art with an iconically pink tinged palette that really makes it stand out from basically everything else I've seen. The game makes wonderful use of vibrant and warm ramps alongside sharply cool colours, creating an extremely pleasing world to look at. It's probably some of the best, if not the absolute best example of this kind of cel-shaded, thick outlined, "Mother 3 Style" pixel work I can think of, with some of the panorama shots sticking out as being particularly jaw-dropping.
Paired with this clean aesthetic is the use of a lot of pass-through art for gradient RGB-lighting effects in stages, nicely done CG cut ins which appear periodically, and even some pre-rendered and photo-bashed work, all of which manages to come together cleanly.
The character design in general is simple and effective, sometimes evoking retro looks like that of Genndy Tartakovsky and sometimes more modern "rounded" styles, always filled with personality and energy, and carrying over nicely in the spritework, remaining visually distinct and varied. The soundtrack by Beatrix Quinn (and some others) is fantastic, an eclectic mix of jazz, funk, and pop with both acoustic and synth elements that's always bursting with energy, but can still bring itself down to really lift up the dramatic and somber moments when needed.
I think the only real complaint I could level at SLAR is that the final act feels a little rushed in some ways- but none that really detract a whole lot from the complete package. It really is just fantastically good, thus far the best RM game I've ever played, and among some of the better RPGs to boot. I had enormous amounts of fun with this one, and it brought me out of a bit of a funk I was in around the time I decided to start it up. It's definitely going to become a go-to recommendation of mine for people looking to try RM games, lesser-known RPGs, or looking for any quality furry centric games.
A smart, modern spin on traditional JRPG formulas, backed up by strong character writing and good goofs. Especially recommended for those who like to mash their protagonist's face into everything to see all the fun incidental dialog. Remember to kiss your girlfriend.

An absolute gem of a game from start to finish.
The team members are really well balanced, and they work amazingly well not just in battle, but as characters in a story. Everyone is filled with personality, everyone is unique in their own way, and it was always fun and interesting to go through each character's stories, so much so that I completed every side quest.
The story isn't exactly unique, it's your classic "RPG characters kill God" type of story, but the characters work so well and are so well written that it just never stops being fun. It also helps that the game is just as long as it needs to, not too short, neither too long. Special mention to Javis and his sons, they don't have much evolution throughout the story, but they are probably the funniest parts of the game.
The humour part of this game is also very good; the jokes aren't too in your face, they are well timed, and it has that sort of Earthbound-esque humour that I love.
Overall it's a great game that keeps getting better and better as your progress, and it leaves a great taste when finished.
