This game is a little bit the shorter side, but the puzzles are difficult and will take a chunk of your time. The game is intimidating at first, and it will spike further in difficulty at around the mid point, but after you pierce through, you will get accustomed to the game's logic, and it will be satisfyingly quaint breaking down the rest of the difficult yet reasonable puzzles (up until some devious ones at the finish line).
Getting into the game's cons: While this game is solely about one thing, rolling the sausage, and it keeps the game solid, there are some mechanics to it that the game will explore, that I feel are either unpleasant
(stacked sausages particularly)
or they simply spend too little time on
(such as detaching the fork)
.
The game is also very linear; there is no nonsense, you go from level to level. So there aren't really secrets in the game's overworld, which isn't a detractor but might disappoint some who have been spoiled by other similar games.
Nevertheless, this game gets an epic thumbs up from the binglesnort.
Super simple game design and really well done level design, this has become one of my favorite puzzle games by far. The only thing I'd love seeing added is a level editor.
Is it fair to down-vote a game, simply because you're terrible at it?
It's an ugly and obtuse game that doesn't explain itself. And I like that about it.
What I don't like is that I can barely move the stupid sausage man and I can't (or possibly won't) configure my brain to intuit how to pilot him. I also can't solve any of the puzzles without a great deal of calculation, and I don't really feel like doing that either.

I once was blind but now I can see, I once was foolish but now I am wise, just buy the game
This game was designed by a masochist. I think I will spend my entire life trying to whittle away at this one puzzle at a time. I've never played a game that made me feel more stupid. it's great! :)
only played this through my bioethics lectures but jesus this has some of the hardest most simple puzzles ive ever seen

Over the decade since this game released, hardcore puzzle games like this one have gotten...cursed. An overworld outside the puzzles rather than a simple level select, puzzles interacting with each other, never introducing new mechanics that aren't direct modifications of the main one, never introducing new mechanics at all and sticking to new interactions with the existing ones, "I could've done this the whole time" moments, and so on. You'll find most or all of these in games like Baba Is You, A Monster's Expedition, SquishCraft, Can of Wormholes, I Wanna Lockpick, Maxwell's Puzzling Demon, Gentoo Rescue, and...
...wait what do you mean Stephen's Sausage Roll had all of these already???
This game was truly way ahead of its time. If you got into puzzles since this became widespread, it's what you play them for, and you've written this game off because it supposedly doesn't have this, I urge you to reconsider. I suspect the only reason this game has fallen out of favor is that Baba Is You kind of stole its thunder as The™ hardcore puzzle game. The more recent entries on the list from earlier have very obvious baba inspiration more so than obvious sausage inspiration. However, the earlier ones, including baba itself, were definitely inspired by this game. Personally, I think I preferred that era of puzzle design, as now, baba's approach to metapuzzles has become nearly ubiquitous, whereas before, every game did it slightly differently (I especially applaud Can of Wormholes for how unique its approach is).
But I digress. This game is brutally difficult, I think the only game I've ever played that's topped it is Bean and Nothingness. However, that didn't seem to stop you all with Maxwell's Puzzling Demon (which I haven't yet played, to be fair), so...I'm sure you'll be fine. If you stick with it, you will indeed discover that there's more to this game than meets the eye, and it has the type of twists you'd expect from a more modern puzzle game. One twist in particular, dare I say it, might have even topped Baba Is You's well-known big twist for me. The game truly innovated an absurd amount, and I don't think it deserved to be forgotten about.
Now, unlike all you Icely Puzzles viewers, who seem to only care about this and nothing else, I do also actually care about the puzzle design itself. In my opinion, this very nearly has the best puzzle design of any game ever. There was one puzzle I found tedious (which is literally the entire reason this game doesn't get a 10/10 from me), but other than that, this game has the highest density of puzzle aha moments of any game I've ever played. Basically every single puzzle felt extremely satisfying to solve. The reasons did vary - the earlier puzzles were so small they almost felt mathematical, and despite that you could actually apply logic to solve them rather than brute forcing them, and the later ones usually focused on new and interesting interactions instead - but again, other than that one, I loved all of them. The only other game that gets anywhere near this degree of utterly brilliant puzzle design is Can of Wormholes, which does actually have zero bad levels imo.
In case it's not clear by now, for the love of god, play this game. It is so underrated nowadays.
Amazing game!
Brutal Sokoban-style puzzling where simple rules create absurdly deep challenges. Even the first levels demand real insight. A masterpiece of elegant, merciless design with a surprisingly dark story.

perfect
The puzzles in this game are absolutely devious. Puzzle fanatics rejoice because these puzzles are relentlessly challenging and really really awesome brain burners.
One of the most difficult puzzle games I've played, but also one of the best designed puzzle games as well. If you want to commit to this, it's well worth it; This game is a minimalist masterpiece.
One of the most difficult puzzle games I've ever played. The amount of complexity that emerges from a couple of simple rules is simply astonishing.
it's very good!!!!
Really awesome and unique puzzle game. Love it to bits!

i initially only bought this game because of the reviews as i found them funny. a $43.95 (AUD) sausage rolling puzzle game sounds terrible, but every review praises it to an insane degree as if it was sculpted by god himself.
i can now say that without a doubt this is the best puzzle game ive ever played and nothing else comes remotely close. unparalleled masterpiece.
gameplay is good you have to cook a sausage from both sides
One of the best
Having played dozens of increpare games I finally got around to playing the big one. It's excellent just as everyone says! I found it rough around the edges, almost certainly deliberately; it makes a lot of bold decisions that I think other designers would be reluctant to make. Some of these decisions didn't land for me (for instance, requiring the player to complete every puzzle, sometimes in sequence), but the ones that did land were phenomenal. The puzzle design is excellent, of course, but I don't think that's what sets the game apart. Instead, I think it's these other design choices: the (redacted for spoilers) story, the procedurally generated music, the staggering progression... I'd love to see more thinky games push against the established design conventions in interesting ways.
If you had told me before I played this game that I would come to feel like a more enlightened individual because of the 30+ hours I was about to spend staring at my computer screen in silence, deeply contemplating a low-poly 3D model of a sausage, I would have called you a fool. And yet, here we are.
After quite some time of not playing games I've just rediscovered this gem of a game: Absolutely great, so much fun, great puzzles that might look easy at first but then turn out to be rather hard, fantastic meditative atmosphere, and amazing visuals, simple but intriguing. Looking forward to many hours of joy with this game.
so you call yourself a puzzle game enjoyer? what's your favorite SSR level then? Wretch's Retreat was a brutal one for me, and stood out the most as a level that felt so seemingly impossible.
If you like puzzle games, you owe it to yourself to play through this one. It's like a more polished more difficult version of A Monster's Expedition, if you've happened to have played that one before SSR like me.
The first few levels are hard, and force you to become comfortable with the strange control scheme of your character. But this is important, because it is a necessary thing before tackling the future worlds. All levels must be completed to advance, so you just have to grit your teeth through the suffering of the bizarre way the character moves.
Each world after the first introduces more and more meat to chew on without introducing any "fluff". The last few levels start to feel a little same-y, and the final level is more of a victory lap and a way for you to look back upon the entire experience. The hardest level for me took about 3 hours, with other difficult levels typically taking at most an hour each. My patience has been rewarded.
Truly a puzzle masterpiece.
clever game. solving the puzzles is cool but not fun to figure out!
This is my favorite puzzle game ever. Simple mechanics, hard puzzles, solid logic-based puzzle solving, and small mechanical introductions that increase the complexity of the game tenfold all come together and form what I can only describe as perfection. I know it's a hard game, but please, just give this one a try. You can also get it bundled with two other awesome puzzle games! (they're not quite as good as this one but they're still great)
My favourite puzzle game ever. It is is a sokoban with simple mechanics that wordlessly tutorializes them and fully explores the potential of their implications.
More than worth its price tag.
One of the best puzzle games I've ever played.
Good cookout prep as well.
Absolutely brilliant. To have this many puzzles with such novel solutions in such a simple game is extraordinary. I also love weeners.
Truly one of the greatest puzzle games. It's got a bit of a slow start, where it leans a bit too much into being a standard and slightly frustrating block-pusher, and some early puzzles can feel a bit trial-and-error. But as it evolves, it shows so much more depth. A relatively simple set of mechanics interact to allow so much intricate innovation. Every puzzle reveals something for you to understand about the game and how it works. And it keeps escalating that discovery past where you'd expect it to stop, you think you've been shown everything but there's more.
It is such a well-crafted experience. It's hard but rarely feels unfair, as puzzles don't have lots of fluff and instead have so few moving parts that it often feels baffling that you can't figure out the right path.
Love this game, but what's with the graphics? Game looks like it came out during the 80s, and needs a remake
She Stephen on my sausage till I roll.
A good puzzle game. Some levels were a bit annoying but otherwise I liked it
After playing this and Baba my conclusion is that I should stick to shooters and rhythm games.
yes
The single greatest puzzle game I have ever played, good lord.
This game does not hold your hand like other puzzle games does. It knows you are smart enough to learn, gives you the bear minimum of information, and invites you to figure out everything else it has not told you. The information it gives you at the start is simple: Movement controls, an undo button, and a reset button. From that alone, the player can derive the information to complete the game with enough persistence.
Stephen's movement is unwieldy, and that is by design. The game uses the movement as the core for its level design. It asks the player to maneuver the sausage rolls carefully while you are still learning how to make Stephen walk in the right direction. As the game progresses, the player develops a mastery of Stephen's movement and sausage physics. The level design progresses to match and guide the understanding, with each addition feeling like a completely natural consequence of Stephen's two-tile model and rolling around sausage links. There are no level gimmicks or player upgrades added as the game progresses. It is all a consequence of the same physics engine from start to finish, and developing it further.
It's hard, no doubt. It's not the game you sit down on a single weekend and plow through in a few sessions. It helps to take a break and come back to it. I personally played it over the course of a full month. It became an obsession, and will be for quite a while, I suspect. And yes, I did change my profile pic to a fanart of Stephen.
Absolutely spectacular game, 10/10.
Grill your sausages👍. Sometimes weird physics interactions makes me wanna grill my brain.
每個世界的第一關都會引導你意識到「原來可以做某件事」,接著這個概念就會成為整個世界的主題;
Fantastic puzzle game with a surprising depth of mechanics and level of difficulty for the fun silly theme. Original, off-beat, and deceptively complex. Very very impressive for an indie game especially but deserves the score on its own merits. 9/10
This game is hell, in the greatest of ways. You are given nothing but orthogonal movements to maneuver sausages around and perfectly cook them on grills. I've only made it to what I assume is halfway, and the difficulty curve does increase exponentially, but it's been fun to poke at.
a tickler
An incredibly impressive puzzle game that explores that absolute maximum of what is possible using the physics of the world. Anyone who appreciates the medium of video games and the creativity of developers should absolutely play this. Although it starts simple, once game mechanics start being revealed, you realize how much thought and effort went into this masterpiece. I love the fact that there are no achievements because there's no real point in looking up the solutions: the only point of playing is the satisfaction you get from finding the answers on your own.
If I had two critiques: Firstly there is a giant difficulty spike in the last puzzle of world 2. However it's hard to criticize this too much as the level is perfectly designed to teach you 3 or 4 new mechanics. If you beat this level, you have the capability to beat the whole game.
Secondly the back half of the game changes from open world puzzles to linear, so it's a bit more punishing to get stuck as you can't try a different puzzle for a while.
All in all, fantastic puzzle game, definitely the best I've ever played and probably will stay that way for some time.
she stephens my sausage until I roll
Almost ten years ago a friend let me play Stephen's Sausage Roll for the first time, I was not big brained enough at the time. Nearly a decade later I finally powered through the whole experience in about 30 hours.
I can easily say it is one of the best puzzle games to do it. I am now enlightened AND ensausaged.
The controls are simply not fun to use, and it was more frustrating than edifying. Avoid unless you're extremely patient and have nothing better to do.
This ones got the sauce....age
Nice sausages, maybe burguers next
好吃
Starts off really strong, however the mechanics get a little gimmicky towards the end. The difficulty curve is also a little wack, like the final section of puzzles was probably the easiest for me.
Overall though the game definitely lives up to the hype if you're looking for a challenging puzzle game
I read somewhere that this is one of the purest puzzle games ever made. I'm not completely sure about that, but for something with such an apparently simple premise, I feel like I now have brain damage.
Capolavoro
I don't know where to start. I bought this as I just finished Baba Is You and Monster's Expedition, and heard good things. The puzzles are intuitive, with insane design and elegant solutions. I started to think of sausages. Think IN sausages. Then I got really hungry. Then I got to the later, more difficult puzzles, and suddenly I was not hungry. When I got stuck in puzzles, I just tried things. It worked so well, because you could just do something, and for some reason it works! It really messes you up thought, because what you did last level doesn't work in the next level, but you can do something else now. Does that make sense?
The puzzles have no waste of terrain or blocks. Everything has a purpose. Everything.
I'm empty now, with no sausages.
sausage/10
incredible
Controls feel extremely unintuitive and inconsistent in the later world. Cool ending though
Stuck on Cold Frustration for 4 hours
One of the best puzzle games ever made. It is basically peerless.
Possibly the best puzzle game I've played on Steam - I'm not typically a Sokoban player but this really hits the spot. The mechanics are limited but they carry a lot of surprises. Each puzzle bends your brain without feeling like you need some secret knowledge to figure out what the designer was going for.
People in here will tell you funny ♥♥♥♥ like don't look at guides
As someone who has played tons of difficult games and has enjoyed the said difficulty, Stephen's Sausage Roll isn't the one which I could describe as fun in anyways. The game starts off directly to a map where it all seems to comprise of difficult claustrophobic puzzles where you have no space to move or rotate around which in turn allows no room of error. The mechanics are very simple but the starting puzzles provide little to no room to build a visual understanding of logic which can be developed to understand the steps to reach the solution. You have a 5x5 grid with 3 or 4 grill and multiple sausages right off the bat. The calming music doesn't help counter your frustration as there's no "Hey I did this puzzle feeling" because it just ends.
There's plenty of sokoban games out there which are creative, mechanically simple, fun and/or nice. I may comeback to this for some other day but I didn't find this fun in anyways today.
Stephan’s Sausage Roll is one of the most creative, cleverly executed puzzle experiences out there. Every solution feels earned and the game never stops respecting your intelligence. If you enjoy puzzles that reward real thinking this one is incredibly satisfying.

I have only played this game for an hour so far having picked it up in a sale on the recommendation of a friend who knows that I love puzzle games. Just the opening puzzles alone have had me scratching my head staring at the screen, and feeling a great sense of satisfaction upon calculating the solution. That such a simple premise can result in such challenging and innovative solutions is hugely impressive, and I can't wait to see what the harder levels to come have in store. For anybody who is a fan of games that challenge you to engage with their mechanics and loves a good puzzle, this should not be skipped
