It's a suprisingly difficult puzzle.

I love this game, it is truly a great game.
I'm suprised I didn't review this. This really is a wonderful and fun game that I loved. the difficulty curve is really tight.

И если тамошнюю свою душу попытаться развернуть номограммой, спроецировать в гиперкуб, то им был бы кирпичик Symbian телефона; а последней J2ME игрушкой на нём был бы Starseed Pilgrim.
В медитативном складировании материала есть что-то от Stack Attack с отцовского Siemens C55. В ясновидческом чутье и решительности ставок — от Snood 21 на подаренной Motorolla C350. Но именно на пронесённой через старшие классы Nokia 5230 схлопывались все линии и сходились все пасьянсы. На ней собирались черновые строфы с хипшотами и перетасовывались QIP переписки со звонками. Её сенсорный экран впитывал всю творческую сенсорику выпускного года и шелестел A6 переплётом дневникового künstlerroman с предисловием к грядущей мегаполисной жизни: бельма размером с небосвод в глазу малогороднего пилигрима, доселе не видевшего ни наружной жизни, ни себя внутри ней живущего.
Неизбежность выхода во внеземное пространство. Пробоины в корпусе наива просипели беззаботно-весенней поросли о том, как часто тепличное растение дышит, и как мало вырабатывает кислорода. И насущный его геймплей отныне лихорадится паническим слепливанием скафандра из подножной шелухи. Присмотритесь: тетраминовыми обрывками философии строится ковчег; по четверостишным картам неба чертится курс в терра инкогниту переходного возраста. Ему нужна непонарошечная боеготовность зелёного рейнджера, — и он прижигает слабости дымным порохом вперемешку с солью земли. Он жаждет быть подлинным человеком, прошедшим пешкой в ферзи по разлинованным своими же жилами клеткам.
Именно этим стяжательством человечек в псевдо-мобилке Starseed Pilgrim идентичен со мною тогдашним. От нависшего груза ответственности над головой всё ручное обретало вес: и под ним, микромоторное мельтешение с сотовым телефоном коллапсировало в перебор кнопочных бусин T9 розария. Отрочество становилось творчеством, творчество — последней игрой, а последняя игра шепталась первой молитвой. И в ней, умозрительные касания миниатюрного гаджета с аркадным паззл-платформером, как набожное теребление крестика, через призму воспоминаний приобретает сакрально-гёссевский смысл ходов на доске микрокосма.
Важность шага влажными кедами по утренним росам, — в молочную туманность над стоячей рекой, где внизу проносятся метеорами шашки-дамки заспанных водомерок. Y-образная лоза висит на груди биооператора проводными наушниками. Прислушайтесь: God Is an Astronaut, 65daysofstatic. Визир прижатой к лицу беззеркалки работает системой навигации гермошлема. Захватывающие дух вылазки на фантазёрный полюс, где та 5230-ая Nokia оттягивала карман компасом с намагниченной романтизмом стрелкой и бренчала ампулой птичьего клея для ловли чирикающих почеркушек в иссиня-чернильный синичник. Поспешные выводы; и торопливое бегство от них: выковыривать осколки Луны, пока те не стали нарывать меланхолией. Обратно через топиарную топь разреженной на чёрное и белое Вселенной, удушающей герметичной закрытостью. Правда приносится домой как trobar clus ключ незамеченного под светом последней звезды репейника в волосах, — пока из карманов на стол вываливаются собранные с берега юности камешки для очередной партии в самость: фотографии; комиксы с машинимами; стихи да проза; нойзовый глитч и эмбиент; коллажи...
...из всей этой кладки мечтательно-многоточных мостиков под мертвенной высью, уводящих глубоко в людское, ур-людское, ублюдское. Они развалятся с ранним паводком, когда обчитавшийся, просчитавшийся зодчий Мартин Иден нащупает на щеке колящийся первой щетиной тщеты повод всё заводнить. Вкладываемый в пращу латырь деградирует до лапидации доброты. There's apparently some hidden mechanics that give you a couple more hours of "gameplay". I have no desire to discover them. ick.
I don't know why I didn't do this many years ago, so apologies for not reviewing it when I should. In any case, Starseed Pilgrim is one of my favorite games ever. The joy of figuring out its rules and exploring its systems in a playful, joyful way (sympohonic garden!) was unparalelled at the time and it's still one of those rare games that follows this ethos. We need more games like this one. And, by the way, I loved the ending too.
To keep it short: play Starseed Pilgrim. This is a special game.

This game is a neat garden game, what you see is what you get. There's a good bit to this game, but it's all based on the same mechanics, that have a lot of randomness in it. I think the dev put it best - play as long as you have questions.

Love this game. Learning how it works and discovering new things was so much fun. It has a charming package. Great little personal adventure. So creative. Fun amount of challenge. If you want to buy it expect a slow start learning how to use the building mechanic and its different blocks, then learning what the purpose of the game is. There is more than you expect here. Don't look up anything, no purpose playing if you do that.
Video games are just amazing, and [i]Starseed Pilgrim[/i], even in 2024, remains a unique experience among them. It consists of eight types of colored starseed blocks, each with different properties, and a pilgrim building a world out of these. Yet it can evoke emotions of curiosity, puzzlement, loneliness, clarity, hope, determination, fear, anger, stress, relief, isolation, despair, self-doubt, euphoria, and pride. That’s more emotions than there are basic building blocks!
So underappreciated... Just try it, what can you lose? More importantly, what could you learn?

I feel like this is only really appreciated by those who consider videogames to be more art than actual games. If you're the kind of person who is drawn in by the lofty bar of expectations that reviewers and critics have set for this game, looking for them to be subverted in mind blowing ways by just how deep everyone says it is, I would reconsider.
It is not a bad game by any stretch. It has rules, you make visible progression, you unlock new things, you discover mechanics. The game largely leaves you to figure it out by yourself, so if you're someone who gets frustrated by having zero direction, I'd immediately say this isn't for you.
I personally love games that show instead of tell and respect my ability to discover things by myself. I also like puzzle games, platforming games, games where your progression is meaningfully demonstrated and has meaningful impact on how you play. I also love games that make you think and subvert your expectations. So why don't I like this game?
Simply put, it's incredibly bare, asks for a lot of your time and gives little in return. The mechanics you discover are simple and you'll spend a decent amount of time figuring them out in, what I consider to be, a pretty joyless trial-and-error process. You spend a good amount of time not understanding anything, then when you do start to understand it and actually applying your knowledge, the perceived randomness of some blocks grates on you when trying to reach specific places and set up specific things. And when you do succeed and manage to 'explore' more, you learn that you have to repeat that exact process to continue. And then when you do reach somewhere new, it's the same thing but very slightly different and more difficult.
The unlocks aren't groundbreaking, the secrets are dissatisfying. There's no moment-to-moment fun in the platforming mechanics and I don't feel smart for completing the puzzles, I just feel relief.
If I'm coming across incredibly vague, it's so I don't spoil the things that high and mighty game critics consider to be spoiler worthy. I will say that, as someone who enjoys the things that many people praise this game for, I was thoroughly underwhelmed when I gave up and looked up what all the secrets were because I was so done. I really don't think it is worth pushing through to see, if I am completely honest. But that is just one man's opinion.
All in all, this is definitely one of the videogames of all time. I can't really say a lot about it other than what disappointed me about it because of all the rave reviews and recommendations. I would say if you really want to play it, ground your expectations and you'll probably get a kick out of it. It's a very lean puzzle game with some simple mechanics that, given enough time, are easy to understand and provide you with a somewhat meaningful sense of player progression alongside its smaller unlockables. There's not really a whole lot more to say about it without [i]"spoiling"[/i] things.
a fun little game about the give-and-take of cultivation. about the to-and-fro of migration. about what traces get left behind. at least, that's how i interpret it.

I have played the game for over an hour, and I have only a vague idea of what I'm even supposed to be doing. The core gameplay loop I've discovered so far is infuriatingly random, doesn't feel good to execute, and the reward for the last 40 minutes have been the game going "you're slowly making process towards something, maybe, who knows, there might be something there if you keep going".
No. This game has failed to provide me with a reason to play it at all after a full hour of playtime. I'm not going to keep going on a lofty "there might be something to discover".

This feels like a game jam game, as such probably around 500% overpriced. Like, I had to change the volume of the game in windows mixer settings o.0.
I personal expect more polish from a game that is being sold.
Do the game. The game does you. Pretension is cool. Actually, this is quite a neat little puzzle game which figuring out the mechanics for is a lot of fun. Very colourful, and good sound too. Can get quite addictive as you begin to figure out what you're doing.
Too much randomness, not enough variety in the seeds. The sound (though simple) is cool, and the lack of explanation does make for an interesting first few minutes. But ultimately it doesn't ever really lead anywhere.

There is no need for explicit narrative when you have gameplay this well crafted. From four buttons (left, right, jump, plant) blossoms a universe: the joy of planting a seed and watching it bloom, a race against blackness, a primal desire to reach the stars. Hidden in these mechanics a journey of discovery, a slow progression through layers of mystery, a brutal endgame I barely even touched. This is the kind of narrative only games can tell, a pure promise: Here’s a world, figure it out. Dark Souls eat your heart out.

I liked it.
The puzzles are OK, but the controls are painful and cannot be remapped. It doesn't support WASD - only the arrow keys, so if you have a keyboard layout without them best of luck. The other keys for action (H, space, etc.) also can't be rebound, so if you have a keyboard layout where those are painful or inconvenient, too bad.
I've played this game over a few years, and have come to love it.
Thinking back now, it feels very delicately designed- like a whole idea or dream. Nothing feels out of place.
My attention never felt exploited or tricked; in a way, the game seemed impersonal to whether I fully 'completed' it or not.
I instead felt genuine curiosity to keep on. This may cause players to bounce off of it however (as I had for some time).
I find this to be a very frustrating and slow experience. it starts of kinda interesting but even at the first stage i was lost. You can grow a few seeds and have to try to build yourself to another "point of interest". you never know how these seeds will grow though and will have to try and try and try and try again until you either get lucky or understand how they work.
For me personally the game didn't have enough reason to trial-and-error my way through tbh.
This game is beyond incredible. Inscrutable at first, intractable in the middle, impossible at the end, and yet, you find yourself doing it. Somehow.

Starseed Pilgrim is hands-down the most amazing puzzle-platformer ever (IMO), and *incredibly* different in type from every other game in that genre.
It's also notable in that it's one of the very few special games which expect the player to actively try to learn the rules of the game while they're playing it, which I find really fun. (Cinco Paus does this slightly better, but only because it's turn-based thus much easier to follow -- Starseed Pilgrim can be so hectic that it's easy to miss some stuff, for me anyway).
However: if you hate the start of the game, I recommend googling around to spoil it (there are some great blogs which detail all of the rules and behaviours you need to understand), because beyond the initial mystery/learning phase, there is an entire procgen action/puzzle game of sublime beauty where players are forced to improvise using an incredibly fun and streamlined construction mechanic... it's just brilliant!
Also the way the stages and hub/meta-progression (I don't want to spoil too much) overlap is just so great... it's a really, really fun experience to explore. Highest possible recommendation! :)
(I recommend using joy2key since the arcade-action core shines a bit more on gamepad IMO)

An old humble bundle feature, languishing in the backlog for so long. I don't think i will beat it. It's a game with simple mechanics that it explains only through poetry. The trouble is that it's very difficult and based in randomness, and the road to the alignment of the RNG is rocky, not necessarily fun packed. It's a neat experience, but it gets in its own way in terms of fun.
A strange and interesting game, although the game has little replay value.
I find myself returning to this world frequently, and travel through it with a learned fluency of that which seemed, through sheer simplicity, impossible to explain. I suppose it still is, that's why I keep coming back. I rarely find works that risk alienation by imposing the responsibility that comes with the respect of trust. To learn how to play is to play, and doing so has lasted well after any supposed completion. I have spent many hours in curious frustration, and consider none of them wasted.
When writing this I have yet to complete the game, far from by the looks of things. I would recommend you avoid spoilers at all costs as I have and to read the text file in the game files. This game is cheap and simplistic, and while the lack of a proper settings menu and the overall bare-bones to the point of near unusablility of the application itself is very frustrating, it's enough to put up with. Running on a standard 1080p monitor I found 2x scaling at fullscreen to provide the best experience. The game itself can be quite daunting and frustrating early on. The utter lack of guidance can be a major turn-off for most. The poetry throughout is pleasant though somewhat prose-y. What has made this game one of my favourite experiences in gaming however is, thanks to its simplicity in mechanics and context clues, and the serenity of the environment, the exploration is beyond anything I've enjoyed. It will take at least an hour (in my case about 2 and a half) before you get the basics down. But walking into a void, using mechanics not explained but learned through intuition and trail-and-error, the sparsity becomes ever smaller. The first few discoveries set up patterns and from those they will deviate ever so slightly, all whilst developing your own strategies trying to achieve the more obvious goals. While it's not for everyone, the open-ended style is hard to pull off, if you stick it through and trust yourself, it's an experience that's worth far more than the meagre price asked for this older title.
The slowest most obtuse game you ever played.
It seems to be built around some sort of idle mechanic I cannot understand with the speed at which your seeds grow, But the strange part is that you are also in a time crunch with the encroaching void. Even stranger, whenever you screw up and make a mistake the game locks you a 1x1 box for like a couple hundred key presses, or a game restart.
The only thing I can think of is that SP is trying to invert general best practises or something.
Is the player exploring the world -> make sure to punish him
Is the player doing stuff and potentially having fun -> make sure he is unable to do anything other than passively watch a box grow for the next 2 minutes.
Here I was thinking that The Witness had it's head up it's own butt, what the hell is this supposed to be... besides a fantastic teaching tool on how -not- to design a game?
Sound effects were nice. That's my only positive feedback.

I feel that when the game came out it was different in style, both are and game play, but now it is just a bit meh. I tried so much to like and enjoy this game but it just bored the life out of me.
This game, to me, is the visceral enjoyment of exploration and mastery. In fact, I'd say it's just about the pure extract of these things, with more depth than one would imagine. This is actually my second time playing, I got it off of itch.io a while back but I enjoy it enough that extending my steam collection with it was a simple decision. Its minimalistic veneer belies the depth and emergent complexity of the world and mechanics. This, of course, means that to speak with much specificity would be to rend the concept asunder. For a fair few people, this is one of the highest complements that can be paid.
All this from a game about growing a garden.

This game was made in an era where elegance and idiosyncrasy in game design can survive, if not exactly thrive, and Starseed Pilgrim delivers both of these with astounding polish--delivers them with perfection, I dare say.
That being said, the average attention span of the modern video game consumer is such that this game can only be experienced as an art piece rather than a proper rogue-like with a lateral metagame progression and campaign finale.
I wonder if the best aspects of Starseed Pilgrim can be recreated in modern games, or whether its minimalist perfection is forever a thing of the past...
Quite a fun little game! Not necessarily something that lasts, however.
It is certainly a unique platforming game, I just wish they explained the mechanics a bit more. If you're a particularly cerebral person who enjoys puzzles you'll probably get a lot out of it.

this game is excellent for killing time, especially as a switch-back-and-forth experience for when you've got other things going on. serene, minimalist, challenging. You can never truly be stuck but you might find yourself preferring certain characters over one another (something I consider a flaw; all characters should be equally playable but this is simply not the case with a few) and subsequently finding it difficult to make your way to the next location.
very clever mechanics, sound design and aesthetic leave this game beautiful and relaxing, but don't let your guard down.

The lack of answers and the ease and fun of being able to probe for answers still pops into my mind years after playing.
Cryptic and melancholy, this game has been on my radar for a long time. But age hasn't been kind to it. Starseed Pilgrim is too much of a proof-of-concept and frequently frustrates.

The idea of discovering things organically is exciting, but Starseed Pilgrim commits a few sins.

[*] It robs you of control by preventing you from choosing the order of your next three seeds, by making [spoiler]two of the blocks almost critical for[/spoiler] getting through levels consistently, and by making [spoiler]a common block spread everywhere like a cancer but prevent you from jumping even a single block high when on it[/spoiler].
[*] The game is slow and punishes small mistakes heavily. Because of the terrible combination of several frustrating mechanics, like [spoiler] the only three-seed long preview of equipped seeds, the lack of ability to jump higher than (usually) three blocks, the lack of ability to dig sideways while in the air or upwards while standing, the fact that you can't count on blue blocks being next, the fact that hearts take so long to grow and sand can't be jumped on, the fact that star seeds can be destroyed by some blocks, and the fact that blocks need to touch star seeds to connect them on the 'other side'[/spoiler], you frequently end up idling, waiting things to happen, just to discover that your plans are irrecoverably broken and will result in absolutely nothing. This punishment + idling combo takes the game's short runs and makes them feel like they're eons long.
[*] The game's variety is limited which makes rewards for the above punishment a slog of a drip-feed -- several hours in and I have only managed so far to discover [spoiler]two new islands whose rules are almost identical to the original island's rules[/spoiler], which was not satisfying. I've been accused of being patient to a fault and this was still underwhelming.

All-in-all, I think this game was a great idea but it's definitely a product of its time as an early indie-wave game and lacks refinement, depth, content, or even any kind of a real hook. I think if someone told me that a "Starseed Pilgrim 2", or a spiritual successor was coming out, I'd be excited. But this is really more of an interesting experiment in mechanics for designers to ponder, and a quick Google search shows at least one blog post describing simple things that would drastically improve this game.

It's a good game
abstract, ambient, opaque, beautiful. I enjoy exploring this game and figuring out how to play and then getting better at it.
Starseed Pilgrim (2013)
So its basically running around trying to solve puzzles and riddles by going from room to room, meaning you will probably encounter the same room over and over a few times, There is also a different dimension to add some extra fun. If you can solve the journey in front of you, its a great experience to have. I for one am not too keen running into the same area over and over but its still a great game to enjoy.

Tried to get into this after years on the back list, no idea why I ever bought it, there is no "hook" to get into the game, nothing I can really see that would drive me to keep playing (maybe in 2013, in 2021 there are hundreds of games in this genre more compelling to play).
A trip and a half. Dripping style from its bum. Can't for the life of me remember any thematic through-line; I think it might be sort of dumped at the end.
I found this game was really well developed. It's rare to find a game that is simultaneously very fun to play, and is considered beautiful in an artistic way.
This isn't a video game, this is abstract art.
I got Starseed Pilgrim with the Humble bundle back in 2013 or something. I didn't know anything about it it was a part of the bundle. I don't think I've played it more than 10 mins to be honest, just that opening it and its just all in your face, no options no settings. There is no meaningful tutorial. No goals? Just some weird blocks you plant?!? and the void that consumes?!? Wha? Well that was too complicated for me back then and I didn't even gave a second thought back then.
But now in 2020 where we are enclosed in a world that has little to no stimuli this game finally made sense. I've decided to download it again, opened it and actually tried to play logically. Well I failed anddddd IIII loooked upppp someee guides.... Well that was it, I have realized that this game is not just an unasnwerable engima, but still in its core a VIDEO GAME. I wouldn't call this a video game though, it is as fun as solving a sudoku with just empty space, no numbers to guide you. It does have its rules but its just blank.
Alright cutting the fuss, the game is about making trying to reach places and then dealing the platformer game you have made without realizing it. Or you do realize it. It is an sudoku puzzle but with no numbers. It is in its core, 2d antichamber.
it's okay i guess, pretty shallow, you just need to build up before the black inversion material gets to you and then you're in this inverse world. there are a few different ways to build blocks up, you need to race to get them out before it eats them all, there isn't much to it, i'm having trouble explaining how this even works, watch a let's play if you're interested probably. i would pay fifty cents to a dollar for this game at most. (i think i got it from a humble bundle or something though so i haven't the slightest idea how much actually paid)

You don't need this game.
I just don't enjoy this. I understood what I had to do, but I don't have the motivation for the level of abstraction required to enjoy this while enjoying solving some pretty difficult puzzles. The game just feels empty and every trailer and gameplay vid I saw was actually truthful: you will not get a better feeling at the game by getting to know better its controls nor by reading the poetry spread around. This just felt like grabbing someone else's highschool or college notes and trying to make sense of those things that are written when bored. Yes, if you're extremely bored then this game is good. But there are so many games out there... I'm saying good bye right now and uninstalling this forever.
I've played this game a lot, and I've either beaten it multiple times or I can't get past the first level, I'm not quite sure...

figuring this game out is fun. It's a little mystery. I'm enjoying it so far. The game itself is incredibly vague, you have to spend some time trying to decipher it in order to play it. That's a lot of the appeal. If that doesn't sound fun, you won't like it.
The negative reviews of this game are soooooo funny to me. People are really big mad at this teeny tiny game.

A beautiful puzzle platformer that's all about experimentation, planning, and slow progress. I played for 2 hours and really enjoyed every minute.
This is one of the most interesting games I've ever played. A lot of people I think will overlook it do to the very basic art-style and the depth of the puzzle mechanics that take a while to really appreciate, but this is one of my favorite puzzle games of all time
Feel joy in the discovery, learning, and mastery of the mechanics of the game. It's not an "art game", but a puzzle game masquerading as art game. Strip away any pretentiousness and you are left with mechanics which are as solid as Tetris. This game will appeal to the type of gamer who enjoys mastering a game. Not a lot changes in the game as you progress through it. What changes is your skill. The difficulty of the game is perfect for me where I feel tension when faced with a tricky situation and victory is earned, not given away just for sitting in front of the controls. At the same time, the goal never feels out of reach.
The difference between this and Tetris is that you do get to a point where you can beat all the challenges and finish the game. It would be cool to have some kind of endless mode, with accelerating darkness, just to see how far you can get.
I don't know man. It tries something new and doesn't explain much. But that's the point.
If you are okay with waiting for blocks growing and building/exploring a world that doesn't talk much. This is for you.
Sadly, that's not me. I do sometimes wait in games. But normally I do that because I'm also thinking about solutions. Or if I have to wait for something I kinda want to do something else at the same time. Maybe I don't understand the game, but it didn't really catch me. Sorry!
Easily in my top 5 games of all time. A big part of the game is figuring it out as you go so don't get frustrated if you don't get it at first. It relies heavily on experimentation, trial and error. Great stuff.

Very meditative, deeper than it looks at first. I had a good time, but it may not be to everyone's tastes.
At first it's a puzzle game with no clear goals; then, as you start figuring out the goals, it becomes a puzzle-strategy game. Once you get some of the strategies down, it also becomes a zen garden. Try it, it's unique.
Johnathan Blow tends to like Zen type games. This not that though, while presentation and music might suggest so in the beginning the game play becomes a endurance test of frustration.
First the game doesn't tutorialize anything. You get the basic controls arrow keys and planting seeds with space. The game doesn't tell you anything else. Some might argue that the discovery of what the f*** you are actually supposed to do is the game. But I say f*** that.
I played the witness. The witness has that joy of discovery and seeing what you can do. But that game actually tells you what to do. In abstract ways perhaps and not in the same place where you first encouner the puzzles but it does eventually.
I don't need to open a guide after 5 min just to progress.
So this game is pretentious BS.
Perhaps the most unique, least traditional platformer I've played. It's a bit more difficult than I would like, but in a way where I need to get smarter about the game, not better at jumping across gaps.
The best part of the game is how many little details there are to learn about the mechanics.
Starseed Pilgrim is an esoteric retro 2D pixel platformer/puzzle/art-instead-of-game game. Control a "spaceman" and dig through blocks and plant colourful flowers to achieve something, I'm not sure what.
While games can sometimes be considered art, this doesn't mean if you slap "art" onto Steam that you get good art, or a good game. More often than not, the result is neither, and that's definitely true here. This must first and foremost be judged on the merits of a video game. No fullscreen, fixed resolution and lazy pixel graphics (I know that is the point of the game but that doesn't mean it's a good point!). Gameplay itself is equally disappointing and it's not even clear what your objectives are, if there's any at all.
I'm not going to go to an art gallery and recommend video games to art buffs. I'm certainly not recommending this to any gamers. Especially not for the eye watering $8.50 price tag. There's free art online and in art galleries. Why pay money for a game trying to be both game and art and succeeding at neither?
