Space exploration and shooter game that is rather addictive. You are thrown into a distant galaxy, and have to build your ship up by finding raw materials and new technologies. You do this by finding aliens, befriending aliens, shooting aliens and scanning many, many planets.
The flying is... fine. The shooting is fun. The scanning of planets will often trigger a "choose your own adventure" type of selection process that is very interesting. There are a variety of quests, which generally require some sort of deduction or lateral thinking to solve - you're not given quest markers for many of the things you are trying to solve.
It's a focussed experience, and mostly you can play on the controller although it forces you to use the mouse and the keyboard some times - mainly for menu work.
All told, though, quite addictive and a fun experience.

Starcom: Nexus is the Unity reboot of an old flash game named Starcom. The gameplay is almost entirely going around in space in your vessel and constantly blowing things up so you live our your fantasy of being captain of your very own Star-Trek crew.
I don't want to harp too much on this indie dev but this is yet another unfinished abandonware. The dev abruptly ended Early Access just to say the game was complete so they could move on to redeveloping the exact same game again (Starpoint: Unknown Space). Game is now fossilized as an embryo with bugs intact. No seriously, the dev even wrote a post-mortem in the steam channel and practically told everyone to go to Unknown Space instead. I do recommend reading the post-mortem to understand the dev's dream but there is no reason for anyone to buy this game since it's officially a dead game.
I played this game after Unknown Space. My first playthrough took me about 10 hours less than US did, but I think that's at least partially down to being more familiar with ship design and game mechanics. There is still plenty to explore and do in Nexus. I did notice the little qualify of life improvements that US made (autopilot, multiple tiers of ship components, ability to individually keymap secondary weapons). I felt the lack of those things in Nexus early on, but by the end I had adjusted. I will probably play both games again on higher difficulty. On 'normal,' I frankly felt overpowered by the endgame. Plus there is a key choice that obviously leads to a different ending which I would like to see. Overall, I recommend both Starcom games. If you like one, you are virtually guaranteed to like the other.
Bought this and Unknown Space after watching some vids by Jingles, decent game with no obvious bugs, well worth the money

I enjoyed this game a lot. I played the sequel first before I played this game, and it was interested seeing how far the second game went compared to this game in terms of gameplay enhancements.
The primary draw of this game for me is the exploration and story. I liked the story in this game better than in the sequel. There is a huge mystery to unravel in this game, and it is very fun to unravel. There is also a big galaxy to explore, with lots of interested things to find around the galaxy, and interesting aliens to meet. The exploration is not as good as the sequel (as you would hope), it's generally both more linear and also more obtuse. For 90% of the game you just follow the jump points between star systems and systematically scan every planet while fending off hostile aliens, which is its own kind of fun. But some of the quests require some complex solutions to solve. For the most part, for the more obscure stuff, especially towards the end of the game, you are probably going to need a guide. Especially since plenty of those puzzles are required to beat the game. Still, it's a lot of fun just roaming around the galaxy and finding stuff, watching your map fill in over time as you explore. Thank goodness you can leave notes for yourself on the map, it's easy enough to forget where stuff is otherwise. You do have some choices to make with the alien races, and a big decision at the end of the game, but otherwise, it's pretty straightforward. But that doesn't mean it's not a good time.
The ship design and space combat in this game is a little basic compared to the sequel, but that's okay, it's still fun. You spend most of the game getting research data to unlock upgrades to ship systems, and you spend resources that you gather to build your ship. Most components take exactly one space in the hex grid. The resource economy is slow in the early game, but by the end game you have more resources than you'll ever need, and it's not too hard to grind resources by farming enemy ships or asteroid belts.
In summary, this game is a good linear space exploration game. This is not the ultimate space playground sandbox, but it is still a fun game to play with a satisfying story and exploration (at least in my opinion).

I really enjoyed this game, lots of space exploration, ship customization, a compelling enough story with enjoyable gameplay. Generally relaxing but some space battles are tough enough to offer some challenge. Has kind of a classic PC gaming feel.

Scratches an itch that I've had since I've played Unknown Space for the nth time. Not nearly as good as its sequel, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't call it good.
Honestly I'd be super interested in the campaign being ported over to Unknown Space just so it can be played with all the nice QoL things.

In the beginning the game was very enjoyable for me, but after 5 hours it started to get annoying and tedious.
You have to backtrack a lot and once I had an alien race as my enemy, they started to swarm me everywhere.
Not that the combat is not fun because it is fun, but I could not get anywhere without getting non stop attacked.
That's when I dropped out. Bummer because I was actually enjoying it.

Simple but thematically well done Space Exploration game with some fighting but a lot more reading involved. It reminds me of Star Trek in a good way. People who are looking for an open world game like Star Sector, with lots of action, should not buy this. The game awards carefull reading and at times marking down notes. You can do this inside the game via the log and mark things on the map for easy reference. You come here for the story and Star Trek feeling. If you don't enjoy slow games, avoid.
Gameplay:
You fly a 2d star map. You enter each sector through a wormhole, then scan the nearby planets. Sometimes you can survey them and a small story with choices is presented. There is not really a possibility to do something incredibly wrong here. In case you do, you can loose some crew but you can fly back to the base and get new crew members. Usually carefull reading and having a look at what is presented and what you already know, is enough to make a good choice. By doing so, you earn science points, which you can spent to upgrade your ship.
There are either presets for ships or your can easily build your own layouts. However this is not something you have to invest time in, for the prebuild layouts are already good enough.
Bascially you fly from a to b, collect data, learn new informaion and once you feel like hitting a spot that becomes to hard, you fly back to base and upgrade your ship, share your information with the station chef and move on. I won't say anything about the story, as to not spoil you. From what I can tell after 1,8 hours, it is engaging enough to keep you going. This is a relaxing game for slow gamers.
I do love me some top down looter space shooters. The combat in this game feels great, the exploration is very well done, there's plenty to discover and not all encounters can be resolved on first visit. Alot of earlier missions will not be resolved until well into the mid to late game. Away missions are discribed in text form but are well written and engaging. The blend of discovery, upgrading of your ships ability, diplomacy with alien races and an engaging main story makes for a very addictive gaming environment. Cannot wait to play the next title.

A fun playthrough. I did almost everything in one playthrough in 25 hours. If you've played Escape Velocity or another similar game, start with Hard or another difficulty; once you hit the big bads at endgame, consider reducing difficulty to reduce the bag of hitpoints to go through.

I am not usually a fan of these types of games, but with it's cool sfx, spfx and general love that went into making it, I enjoyed it from beginning to end.
The story guidance was enough to keep you engaged, however the map is an absolute mess and begins to be difficult to navigate.
Apart from that, perfectly entertaining and a few hours worth of floating about.
Weapons do get a bit irritating as not a great deal of thought went into them,
side stories were an entertaining read.
The text should of been proof read as multiple spelling errors start to be a bit irritating.
Give it a go, but get it cheap.

Сначала поиграл в следующую часть и по ней видно, как автор вырос. Но здесь тоже приятно исследовать, интересно находить планеты. Приятно превращать кораблик из малюсенького шаттла в гигантский корабль с 16ю плазменными орудием 4я щитами и главной пушкой. К минусам отнес бы затянутый финал, где противники уже не представляют сложности и просто рыщешь по космосу в поисках чего-то, что зачастую без гугления и не найти.

Played eleven hours and enjoyed all of it, but left to play other games, but now after watching The Might Jingles give the sequal a go, I remembered how much fun I had playing this. So let's give it a go again, and may be this time finish it.
What a wonderful single player game! Reminded me of Elite, asteroids, and the old star trek games.
I'm off to play unknown space now. This is one of the most enjoyable games I've played for a while, thank you.
I loved PC games like Starflight, Star Control, and Sentinel Worlds I: Future Magic. So this game scratches that itch. You travel a universe trying to figure out how you got there which leads you to brokering peace with different alien races and solving puzzles all while upgrading your ship. Shipyard mechanics were fun and I appreciated that I didn't need a dreadnought class ship until the end when you're going to want a bigger boat.
Excited to play Unknown Space next!
Scratches many unserved itches, with an exploration game loop reminiscient of Space Rangers 2 and Star Control 2 (two of my personal favourites, so i may be biased). With multiple SSDs full of the latest and greatest, this is the game that currently keeps me locked in and thinking about it when away from my desk. The sequel will be a no-brainer once i finish Nexus.
Great story and gameplay but lacking quality of life things like quest tracking, especially towards the end game, which can make things incredibly frustrating and off putting for working gamers.
A lot of times you won't know where you need to go and I kinda was like no time for this and just googled the coordinates since I didn't want to waste time trying to figure out what to do next.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if your a more casual gamer I can see how this can be an annoyance.
If your the kind if person who prefers to be told go here and do this then I don't think this game is for you.
For me, I wish the dev had included an option to turn this off since that's basically what I did by googling :D
I like it, but I can see how it might not be the game for everyone. It's a game for dreamers, not so much those that want a visceral experience. It's relaxing, contemplative. ethereal. More of a throwback to older-style space exploration games. If that sounds like your thing, then yes, check it out.
I wanted to experience a space opera on my Steam Deck, in 2D. Initially I enjoyed this game a lot. Combat was okay, exploration is nice and the story not bad at all.
But then more and more major annoyances appeared. Like the controls not working on the Deck. Even remapping the buttons didn't fix it, which results in secondary weapons becoming useless. You can only trigger them if you don't use either the sticks or any other button. So you have to pause movement and shooting in the middle of the battle to fire your missiles. Lasers, which seem to be the best weapons in this game, don't work at all.
But even if you don't intend to play it on a Steam Deck or with a controller, the game itself still has more issues and weaknesses. The "quests" are mostly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boring. Fetch items, bring them there. Often not telling you where you can get them. The result is that you are a delivery boy, jumping from one wormhole to another.
The mission log is a mess too, soon enough you'll wonder what happened where and why.
And last but not least, the game is incredibly repetitive. In every matter.

It's a cool space shooter with a lot of charm. It gives you a reason to explore its galaxy by making sure you never know what you'll find. It's been awhile since I've been so pleasantly surprised by a game. It gives you clues you have to piece together to find important items and advance the story, which ends up much more rewarding than only using waypoints. Plus, I liked how the points you use to upgrade your ship (and certain upgrades themselves) come from discoveries you make while playing the game. Building ships is both straightforward and logical, creating a satisfying system of choices and trade-offs, and combat feels weighty and visceral since enemy ships can be destroyed piece by piece. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes both twin-stick shooters and sci-fi writing.

I will give this game an upvote, but if you're thinking of playing a Starcom game, buy Unknown Space, not this one. While this game is still reasonably fun, Unknown Space is a masterpiece which improves on Nexus in every conceivable way, especially in regards to world and story. The writing gets the job done in Nexus, but the writing in Unknown Space elevates that game from good to incredible. Only get this game if you have finished Unkown Space and are desperate for more, because if you only have time to play one of these games, it should be Unkown Space, so pay the extra money for that game because it's worth it.
Edit:
Changing my review to a thumbs down. The more I played this game, the less I liked it. For one, the steamdeck controls don't work well. I had to rebind them on steam to make them functional, and even then, the buttons didn't work if I moved the control sticks or pressed any other button, and sometimes they just stop working temporarily for no reason.
Next is the exploration. Other reviews made it out as if the exploration was like a puzzle, where you had to refer to your logs to figure out what to do. This was not the case. You just go to planets marked as unexplored or marked as having more to investigate. The "more to investigate" part is what I hated, because it simply means that you will have to backtrack when you have found something somewhere. A good 1/3 of this game was just backtracking to previously explored planets which had "more to investigate", which is tedious and not fun.
Last and worst of all is the writing. It's bad. Which is shock because of how amazingly well written the sequel was. Unlike the sequel, the planets felt completely disconnected from the alien factions and world. They all boil down to, "you find some resources", "you find a mcguffin", "you lose some resources", "you lose some crew". In the sequel, the planet exploration told you a lot about the alien factions who inhabited a sector, but here, the planets tell you almost nothing about the world.
Also, the alien factions were extremely uninteresting. Everyone was too friendly and trusting. I was so disappointed when I did something bad (unintentionally) which should have been unforgivable to a certain faction, and that faction just forgave me. The only interesting faction was the bird people, but you need more than one decent faction to carry the game
There is just such a vast chasm in quality between this game and its sequel. Don’t get this game. Get Unknown Space. That game is a masterpiece. This feels more like a prototype.
Simple, but well designed. Hopefully the second one expands on the potential in the first.

I was having a great time, until I needing a certain condition to advance the game, and it did not activate or present itself when I had met the prerequisites. Unfortunately, it seems that this game is no longer actively Supported, and though I sent Reports and Requests, the issue has never been fixed and I cannot advance further.
Great game for fans of Star Trek. Heavy on exploration.
Warning choices really matter for the achievements
This game is a top down sci-fi love letter to every ship nerds grew up adoring, there’s the element of Star Trek Voyager and being separated by an anomaly, forced to survive in a new circumstance while holding on to an identity which is both physically and metaphorically very far away. The ship combat takes inspiration from The Expanse while borrowing elements of Battlestsr Galactica.
The result is a two stick top down sci-fi epic that delivers on all of the above and more. The gameplay loop of exploration, resource discovery, and ship research/development is very satisfying, sprinkling in some story driven crew management elements as well.
We will make it back to Starcom, but the question is, will home and Starcom have made it back with us.

the second game in the series I had a blast with, so I bought this earlier game. fun to upgrade ship and read the clever text of explorations etc. but midgame ran out of things to do, quests to vague to continue, got bored after hours of searching nebulae having my ship struck by nebulae lightning . And I mean hours of searching for a way to continue quests. It became boring at that point. Had made friends with all the aliens except the always hostile bugs that are trivial quickly to battle. Shame, I love the concept and the second game in the series improved on this to make it just right, and I do look forward to a third installment of the Starcom games much after the fun of Starcom: Unknown Space. Starcom: Nexus just was not as polished. Someone with more patience with puzzling out where to go and what to do after getting their ship upgraded with not much else to do may like this, is is a solid game as far as fighting mechanics and good writing, a lot of love was put into it obviously, I wish I could give a thumbs sideways. Maybe I should not write this while frustrated and quitting the game after spinning wheels trying to find a planet in the cursewordhere nebulae for real life hours, even with Grok's attempts to help.

Квесты ближе к концу чуть хуже проработаны, поэтому после 30 часов игры пришлось пару раз заглянуть в гайды, так как было совершенно непонятно что делать, и не было желания тратить ещё 10 часов чтобы облететь 300 планет по второму кругу.
I played this game immediately after playing Starcom: Unknown Space, which I also liked. Although I mistakenly played the second game first and the first game second, it didn't really matter all too much.
Many aspects of the original Starcom game were really great. I felt the storytelling was better in Nexus, the landing on planets had more varied responses, and the combat was less punishing.
A lot of the quality of life improvements in Unknown Space are missing, such as autopilot, or other small things, but nothing that is a dealbreaker.
One small criticism is that the main story becomes a bit hard to follow at certain points and I had to rely on Google and YouTube videos to get back on track. That could just be a me thing but it was a bit frustrating. You really have to pay attention to everything that's said and read all the dialogue or you could end up a bit lost.
Literally can't end the game because of a bug on the script, and the devs act like its a feature. Get away
Сначала думал: "Сборка корабля по клеточкам... Фу...". Но вселенная с ее загадками, технологии, другие цивилизации, исследовательский дух! Сам не заметил как на семь часов залип. Прервал сеанс игры с большим трудом.
Спасибо всем причастным к созданию и выпуску этой игры. Очень зашло.
This game reminds me of a game I played on DOS back in the 90s called Solar Winds Been waiting for a game like this , Very slow paced exploration and some combat with RPG elements,.

This is a nice space exploration game with a good mix of combat and things to discover.
The game can get somewhat frustrating at points as it's not always clear where you should go or what you should do. The alternatives you get when surveying can also be frustrating in the same way as results sometimes just seem random.
Combat is nice, as is the research and ship building.
Over all I'd say the good outweighs the frustrations in this game

I never got the chance to play Star Control but if it's anything like this, then it's great. Lots of exploration to do, it can be played chill or get quite hectic during battles.

Fun game. It's a mix of puzzles and shooting, and I found it very enjoyable.
Caveat: Most of the puzzles are robust and/or easy to finish, but one or two aren't, and the uneven difficulty will throw many off. I had to google how to continue in the endgame. I had already exhausted an avenue of options once, and no new options had opened for a VERY LONG time. It wasn't very obvious that I should go back to the where the options had been exhausted for so long, to get a hint to another set of options that ALSO had been finished a long time ago, to open up an option in one of the few quests that remained.
That said, I enjoyed it, and look forward to playing 'Unknown Space'.

les traductions en francais ont du mal par moment vu le model chat GPT et sa traduction literale des expressions, il faut deviner parfois, mais mon anglais est bon donc ca ne me pose pas de problème, je repère vite d'ou vient le soucis. ceci dit, cest mineur comme problème, ca n'empêche pas de jouer et de comprendre l'histoire... je conseille vivement, même en 2026 ! :)
Great exploring game. The Mighty Jingles is creating Youtube content on the new one. But alas I dont have a machine to run it. But it will run Nexus which I am have a great time exploring and going down the ship and research tech trees.

There's no way I played for 45 hours, was there?
I got it over the weekend in the Starcom bundle and figured I'd play this one first.
I had some days off and.. 45 hours? Wow. I guess it was pretty fun!
I absolutely love this game. It's everything I want in a 2D space sim. Deep exploration, cool story, satisfying combat, fun asteroid shooting to mine materials, weird aliens doing weird alien stuff, and the ship customization is insane. So many ways to build out ships. 10/10.
Weird game, if im being honest. On one hand it tries to make you pay attention to every event, but a lot of them are just repeating themselves... And if that was not enough, you also need to really keep an eye for objectives, you done something you needed for quest? Better remember it, you might not even get notice you finished the quest. And yet... despite all of it, its quite... addictive...

Первая половина игры отличная! Сражения, улучшение корабля, исследование планет, начальные квесты — отменно. А вот дальше... Непонятно, или рожу бить, или ж... лицо мыть. Чем ближе развязка, тем больше курения гайдов. Это очень плохо, когда сюжетная линия требует чтения прохождений. Заметки - дичь, аж злит. Причем про заметку вспоминаешь, когда уже улетел и забыл, где ее нужно было ставить.
Игра хороша, но каждый камень придется подписывать, скорее всего потом придется вернуться...
Что делать?! Куда лететь?! — постоянные вопросы, аж голова болит. Но пукан не горит, поэтому рекомендую.

Wonderful game. Fun gameplay loop, surprisingly deep without ever getting cluttered. Just a marvelous game. Can't believe I've had this in my library for so long without playing.

there is a lot I love, but the game does not respect your time. It expects some sort of pixel hunt, but with planets and a very empty galaxy. You spend hours finding items that you dont know what for, for the game to explain 8 hours in.
