Played in the early/mid 2000's and had a blast, especially being part of a team.. theres a learning curve to the game but not horrible if you seek out a good team. Just recently came back and there wasn't a big issue somewhat catching up to others and being able to take part in various group runs, not top tier by any means or where people are that have played longer, but there's fun in seeking out new gear, working on your build, swapping augs, trying different classes.. Game is old but provides plenty of content and things to do that can cater to a large spectrum of gamers.. Give it a try.
I'm a long time player of Star Sonata and the time I have spent playing the game was very fun but sadly with all long running games there is always the long term players that rule the game, they have items/skills/ships that you can no longer get and I understand, they worked hard for them, to take them away would be cruel and make them want to quit.
Anyways, this game is what I've always wanted in a space game, it has combat, trade, mining and base building and its all in a simple yet rewarding way, you can even have fleets and such in the forum of slaved AIs, I enjoy everything about this game but I'd love to see a offline version of the game, I think it would sell very well.
As it stands now I have stopped playing but when last I did, the game was still very populated, older players are helpful and willing to part knowledge to the newer players unlike some games out there where players are way to competitive.
If you are looking for a simple yet involved space game with multiplayer, this one is for you.
This game is a continual state of live-server beta testing of features that the dev team seems unable to agree about. Everything is in continual flux, and currently, most of the game is horribly broken and unbalanced.
The dev team does not care to accept any real criticism of their flawed approach, and will instead supress negative feedback. They care more about preserving their bubble of positivity than actually stamping out rampant racism in the game discord chats.
Not worth your time. Avoid at all costs.

After spending 15 years playing, here I am to tell you what to expect.
The game is wonderful. You get into a whole universe teeming with life. You see other players and the fun begins. You level up. You get new ships, skills, and that grin on your face reaches your ears. It is one of the best feelings you will feel in Star Sonata. You form a team together with the ones you met during your journey and one day you'll decide to take a bite out of that vast ownable territory. You build bases, populate planets, extract resources, solve logistics problems, set up defenses and get armed. To the teeth. You prosper. Slowly, the team becomes able to do harder runs, get supreme gear, insanely powerful ships and the process speeds up with every invested month. Diplomatic relations with nearby teams are established, trade routes are created and treaties ensure the development of every team in the neighbourhood. After a long and tiring cooperated run against the deadliest bosses of the game, you lie down in bed, statisfied and fulfilled.
The next day you log in, you see something strange. It's not war. Nothing is devastated. It's just your bases aren't there anymore. Your teammates are reporting the same thing, it's all gone. Overwhelmed by adrenaline, you ask your neighbouring teams if they know what happened. They say someone came and took them. They didn't stand a chance either. How could they take it if you got offenses and defenses there set up properly, you ask? It's simple: the attacker had 10 years of advantage.
You lost to a single player having more characters than there are in your team. Why does someone do this? Easy. He already has everything he might possibly need. He does all the hard bosses alone. There's, however, something that you have and he wants that. He isn't going for your star systems, neither your base gear: he is going for your hopes. He feeds on your despair. A lot of players quit and you're left in the game, unable to do runs, defend your territory or improve.
Searching for answers, you bump into a strange world behind the game, where most of the resources, territory is focused in the hands of a few really bored people, and the game is rather about being an interactive punching bag for their statisfaction.
The game is designed to get your hopes up, and they are prepared to feed on them.
It's all but a clever use of game mechanic.
Been playing SS for awhile i think its a amazing game. I have been a player since C1 and it was one of my most played game when i was younger. I took a break later on when C2 was announced and eventually got back into it couple of years later. Things changed but i eventually got back into SS. One it was a lot easier to get credits and to level. Two it was really easy to get back into the swing of things. I know SS doesn't feel like the greatest game but once you find that pace it can be a pretty great game. 10/10
There's currently a massive rework of the entire game in progress. This rework will render the game absolutely unfun to play and the devs are resisting any and all critiques about the rework from its playerbase. The owner of the game forces whatever he wants into the game without any QA or supervision. Any investments into your characters are being dashed as over 40% of all items in the game are being changed to suit the owner's vision.
