Good isometric turn based rogue-like game that properly takes advantage of the mechanical and mathematical potential of a spellcasting theme. Defeat normally frustrates me- this game almost makes it welcome to start again.

I played this a while ago, recently came back after seeing several updates had happened. I can't recommend it. It's slow, overly difficult, totally RNG. Meta-knowledge barely helps you over playthroughs because of how quickly the number and power of enemies scale. Find a build you like? Good luck getting it in your next 20 playthroughs because of weird modifier spell cards that fill your choices every time you level up. There's an interesting game in here crushed by unplayability.

Spellmasons had a genuinely fun idea: chaotic spell combinations, co-op tactics, and a roguelike structure where experimenting with magic was the whole point. The early versions felt like a sandbox where you could get creative and laugh at the absurd chain reactions.

Now it feels like a spreadsheet.

Somewhere along the line the design pivoted from fun wizard chaos to tedious optimization grind. Progression drags, encounters feel padded, and instead of experimenting with spells you end up repeating the same efficient combinations just to keep up with scaling enemies. The game technically still has the same mechanics, but the pacing and balance have sucked the joy out of them.

Spellmasons is supposed to be about combining spells in clever ways while fighting through procedural encounters and building your spellbook as you progress. Unfortunately the current balance turns that creativity into homework.

The result is a game that demands time instead of rewarding it.

Instead of “what ridiculous combo can we try next?” the experience becomes
“how many more fights do we have to grind before this build works?”

There’s still a good concept buried in here somewhere. But right now the game feels like a chore disguised as a roguelike.

Fun idea.
Bad pacing.
Way too grindy.

SpellMassons is a pretty interesting game! The randomness in every run creates unexpected builds that keep things fresh and exciting. Sometimes you get such wild card combos that you'll be pondering every single move for up to 10 minutes, which adds real depth to the strategy.
The only small downside right now is that there aren't a ton of builds available yet, but this game has HUGE potential if the developer keeps updating and expanding it. Definitely recommend!

Has potential but for some reason the game just keeps wanting to give me b.s. cards... constantly. Maybe like 1 in 20 games have been enjoyable, where I'm not just getting completely demolished.

Areas that could use improvement:
1) Better card selection and then a way to discard the garbage ones or refund for currency
2) Less enemies or much slower escalation each level
3) Get rid of that level where everything is bright white... hurts my eyes and sucks at night brah

Great tRPG - lots of great customization options and each class feels unique. Targeting spells make the end game hilariously fun and really give you the feeling of being an Archmage.

Хорошая небольшая пошаговая Noitaс отлично проработанной механикой конструирования заклинаний.

Игру также можно сломать собрав страшно сильные комбинации карт (Так ты получаешь заклинания). Есть возможность повеселится в кооп режиме, а также попробовать разных "Магов" (Механики маны)

На пару тройку вечеров или на фон зайдет на ура. Также хочу отметить возможность поставить моды не выходя из игры и увеличить небольшой набор контента

I really wanted to like this game. I'm a fan of a lot of different notoriously difficult games, and this unfortunately just isn't fun even through the difficulty. I haven't had a run where I felt like I was achieving anything, and even when I did there were moments when I was one-shot by a boss I didn't know the mechanics of. And by the nature of the game's general slowness and difficulty, that meant I'd need at least a couple hours worth of runs to even get back to that point. Roguelikes exist in a space that says "Information is the meta-progression" but this game has so much excessive RNG when it comes to enemies, spell selection, and perks that information in most runs means absolutely nothing in the face of enemy super-scaling damage.

Hope this game gets some updates that help alleviate some of these frustrations.

This is legit one of the coolest games I've played on Steam. Crafting your own spells on the fly by combining your components, triggering different effects at different times of the spell depending on the order/placement, effects that synergize and combo, and then eventually building into a mage that can level the entire map in a single spell.

Extremely fun. And Co-op! The co-op made it an instant buy for me, but I'm surprisingly going at it solo pretty often.

No idea what happened. Game was a massive power fantasy. Now its not. It a chore and a slog to even get through the first 2 levels with a group of friends.

Loved this game when we first got it. 30 hours of fun. Last session coming back from taking a break, everyone has decided to drop the game. Its not a power fantasy, or fun anymore. 8 copies of the game going to the shelf to collect dust.

I hope in the future patches it becomes fun again, living the power fantasy, turning the game into a power point with all the spells being tossed around. Not sure if dev listened to some hardcore community of people saying the game was too easy but its a shame to lose this one in the list of games we play.

Spellmasons is an excellent roguelike game, the spells that you collect over the course of the game are fun and easy to grasp, while the spell combinations have an incredible skill ceiling, are weird and will always push you into trying out new combos and approaches. The game can start off as challenging, especially if the RNG is unkind to you and doesn't bless you with the best spells right away or gives you spells with limited interaction, but since this is a roguelike, there is no shame in dying and playing again. Every run is different, the enemies are pleasently logical and mechanical, while still having some mystique about specific features. The character options - spellmason, deathmason and goru all present fundamentally different methods of playing while keeping the same basics of collecting spells and upgrading/obtaining randomized features.
This game has been so much fun. Like, I cannot stress enough how fun it is to be given a limited but growing arsenal of funky spells, and then be able to find out for myself what the best course of action with them is, how useful they are for what and what hidden mechanics they offer.
I played this game with my brothers, I played it with my best friend and I will play it with anyone willing to give it a try. Certainly well worth the money. And I think I will keep coming back to spellmasons for as long as it is functioning.
Probably my favourite Indie game right now:)
