Perfect Rouge-like game
Played this game for years, in prison, lol. This is one of the few games you can get in prison for the tablets. Wasnt cheap either lol. Great game tho, Love OrangePixel, their games kept me busy thru covid in there. Dont listen to anyone this is a fire ass game and hella fun.
The pretentious trailer doesn't live up to its promise. As far as I figured out, the gameplay loop is more or less the following:
(1) Pray for good items/ammo
(2) Learn the minimum number of hits needed to kill enemies with each weapon so that you don't waste ammo
(3) Move back and forth until the enemy makes a stupid decision and walks into your line of fire, otherwise you walk into theirs and take extra damage
(4) Pray that plants heal you to max instead of dealing insane damage
(5) Die because there's an arrow above a console in a room full of fire traps that, for some reason, you walk inside when you click on it
(6) Restart from the very beginning because for some reason this game is a roguelike
(7) Die again because you need to wait one turn for fire to stop shooting out of the ground, but you're surrounded and there's no way to skip your turn--you are forced to walk into the fire, which does more than 50% of your max HP as damage over time.
(8) Write a bad review and ask Steam for a refund
I will say, the idea of no waiting in between turns is really cool, but I think this causes the gameplay to be too simple for its own good. You're controlling one guy, and the decision making is literally just hoping enemies walk stupidly.
I hate this genre and I hate this game, but I can see it being fun for anyone who doesn't feel the same way. You move on a grid, and enemy's move when you do. You have to plan it out so that they move into your range of fire. Good luck deciphering which ones also have ranged weapons, but that's what trial and error is for, right?
Wrong! Cuz it's a permadeath game, so you start at the beginning each death, and try again, and as developers for these games would have you believe-because the stages are randomly generated-I'm not going to get instantly bored with it because "ooh, its different every time!"
As far as I know, there aren't any upgrades to help you through each run like in every roguelike, so I'm guessing its a matter of learning all the mechanics and strategizing, utilizing your collection of weapons to get you through, which is a big yawn for me. And I'm not certain the game can be beat. Might just be a see how far you can get kind of thing.
But it is fun and people who like strategy and roguelikes should find some enjoyment in this.

This is a great little game with a surprising amount of depth. I can pick it up and play it for an hour or so and drop out when I get busy.

Il n'est pas facile, mais vraiment amusant et peut se montrer addictif.
Il rappelle un peu Crypt of the Necrodancer dans son mode déplacement par case, mais ça s'arrête là, pas de rythme à suivre.
Du coup, c'est plus tranquille, on a le temps de réfléchir à nos mouvements, les adversaires se déplaçant à chacune de nos actions.
Une bonne variété d'armes et d'upgrades pour appréhender au mieux les ennemis.
La mort est permanente, ce qui constitue un certain challenge.

Good roguelite fun although I dislike how I can no longer see my top runs unless I manage to make it onto the top 15 of the global leaderboard (very unlikely).
A very good idea, with medicore execution.
When you play this game, you basically do this:
move left - move right - move left - move right - hope an enemy jumped in front your barrel - shot - shot - shot - rinse and repeat.
Very monotone.
Basically, imagine a turn-based Nuclear Throne (literally, exactly that).
- But with only 3 characters (a reskin with stat adjustments)
- 3 types of weapons only (they upgrade though, but this only gives them more AoE or Damage)
- A ton of imbalances
- "features" in regards to gameplay / combat that you cant play around.
As a small example:
All monsters do their action after you do. This means you will regulary open up a door in a corridor, which will reveal a monster. Since your turn is done, the monster gets its turn and shots you for 1-3 damage (which is 5 to 15 % of your health). And there is no way at all to avoid this.
Also, teleporting monsters, which again, teleport after your action. So even if take cover, the monster may just beam to a random spot that is not covered and damage you.
Also, level generation is pretty wonky, the rooms are usually cluttered with boxes and enemies and there is really very little to move or manover. Considering its a turn-based game, but you cant really move well.....you get the idea.
The only upside in this game is that you can pick up various "items" that wil give you a one-time boost, for example some more max health or a temporary boost to firepower. This is a nice spin, but again with inconsequential execution as the items are basically almost always tempoary powerup and they dont really make the game more interesting in regards to your choices (which usually boil down to this: move left - move right - left - right - unil the enemy is aligned with your gun - shot shot shot - left - right - left right)
All in all, i rate this a generous 5/10. In my mind, not even close to being worth the asking price of 12 bucks.
Considering its a mobile port, this should be like 3.99 ? maybe.

The Short of it: A quick to pick up rogue-lite that puts you in control of various classes of Space Grunts (think Aliens and the Colonial Marines), and utilizes energy weapons, projectiles, and rocket launchers. Fun =)
Casual fun, with a slight learning curve that sorts itself out with some experience.
Fun pick up and play roguelite that emphasizes fast, turn based action. For lesser skilled players the overall challenge curve can get pretty steep later in the game, but it never really feels overly unfair if you're being mindful.
Thumbs down only because I feel ten dollars is quite a lot to ask for this game

but it follows the trend of many other rogue-likes available on Steam which have no progression system

A very lo-fi tactical shooter which is sometimes fun, but due to the unfair mechanics, poor UI and permanent death, is very frustrating. The simple mechanics and gameplay make it playable and the randomized levels and variety of enemies add to replay-ability, but it’s far too basic and ugly to recommend. There’s no story, there’s little variety in the gameplay, and there are games out there that do more than this much better and actually look decent. Some neat ideas, but most of them are unoriginal and I was bored after an hour’s play.
Meh, its okay for a buck or in a bundle. As others have pointed out, it's basically a turn-based Nuclear Throne.
Pros: easy to pick up, has gamepad support (unlike many rogue-likes), pixel graphics make it very easy to see what is going on, easy to get on daily leaderboards due to low player-base.
Cons: no progress, lacks the constant terror of immanent death that compensates for permadeath in Nuclear Throne.
Fyi: stylistically similar to Orange Pixel's real-time Heroes of Loot.
You are often hurt with each move, yet no way to know how to prevent it. ??
Game is a tad more difficult than it looks like at first, but once you get into it it's a lot of fun! Itemization is great, plenty of consumable and weapons too. I find most rogue like games to be somewhat overwhelming at times, learning curve and all, but Space Grunts is a great balance for a casual strategy pew pew fun.

Enjoyable. It could be better with deeper story, loot explanations, and perhaps some mechanics tutorials. Good fun, and pretty game.
I've really enjoyed this rougelike. Most of my playtime is on the Android version, but the Steam version (I played on Linux) is just as good. (I had a couple of issues with sound on 1.6.0, but that's all.)
There's an extra element of resource management (with weapon ammunition at least) compared to what I'm used to with my limited rougelike experience, and it works pretty well; it encourages you to be consious about what you're using according to the situation. I have moments where I just run around blasting enemies, and moments where I have to stop and think my way out of a tight spot. It's pretty rewarding, and it keeps me coming back (even though I've yet to beat the game).
If you're on the fence, maybe wait for a sale, but otherwise I think this is worth the $10 asking price.

Really fun little roguelike. I enjoyed it so much I bought it on Android to play on the move, which is actually where I've spent most of my time playing. It's just the right level of 'deep' to be fun without being overwhelming.
It's an enjoyable sci-fi roguelite which is well-made and fun!
Doesn't feel like it has a lot to offer in terms of replayability ... after one or two failed attempts I felt like I'd seen everything the game had to offer, and it wasn't very intriguing.
There just doesn't feel like there's a lot of depth to the game... having only one character to control instead of a whole squad makes things proceed in a fairly simple matter: walk up to dude, empty your clip, hope you don't die in the process. Repeat. Repeat. Sometimes you pick up things to help.
How you manuever your character relative to enemies has very, very little effect on gameplay... if any. If you sneak up on a character who is facing away from you and fire your gun, well ... in that same instant, the enemy manages to spin a full 180 degrees and land a bullet in your chest armor, so positioning and manuevering in this game means nothing.
Kudos for trying a simultaneous move/turn system, but the end result is that you have all the enemies moving the same speed as you, and most of them have the same range as you. The end result ends up being that once you're engaged in a fight, there is little-to-no hope of disengaging from the fight to set up a defensive position or do a tricky manuever on the enemy, or whatever ... you just both continually fire on each other, hoping that the enemy dies first.

The final verdict concerning Orangepixel’s game is that, the PC port of Space Grunts is a good one and it basically brings the same concept the mobile game has for both old and new players. Even in small duration, it brings a lot of action and challenges for all the players.

Quite a damn fine master piece gem of a game its like playing chess with aliens, and im not talking about xcom...
This game came recommended by a friend who may or may not know the developer. I am a big fan of roguelikes, especially stuff like Nethack...but im also into space games so this one really hit the nail on the head, as they say. Its a very easy quick game to dive into, with some interesting mysterious objects and encounters. At one point I found an object that opened up some sort of hole in the floor and it went to a cutscene between my char and some of the other npcs you can play. Really cool little touches like that are fun!
Disappointing. Too many "quality of Life" features missing. Too many odd/frustrating design choices.
Missed Opportunity.
This is probably the best game developed by Orangepixel. A really fun experience that's approachable but at the same time has enough depth to keep us playing and wanting more. An important thing missing is sync with the iOS version as other games have implemented, making gamers focus just on one platform and having no incentive to purchase the game on computer and mobile. That would make it just great and I hope the developer considers it for future games -- maybe Space Grunts 2?

游戏的目标很简单，在每一关里存活的同时，找到通往下一关的传送器终端，而在当前的这一关中，有着数量庞大的房间，里面可能是弹药与医疗资源，也可能是一堆想要你性命的怪物，但在开启这些关闭着的房间前，这一切都是未知的。游戏开始前有三种人物可选，他们之间并没有优劣之分，在攻击力、道具熟练度和运气值上的数值都各有优势，这决定了在以后探险的过程中不同人物有着不同的打法。游戏采取了回合制，但是过程却很流畅，全程都让人神经紧绷不已。
所有人物的武器都是三种，最常用的小手枪，高威力的榴弹炮，远距离穿透低伤害的狙击枪，针对不同情况使用可以有着事半功倍的效果。怪物们的血量一开始也不高，即使面对较强的敌人，保持距离并尽量先手攻击对方，自己一般都不会损失太多血量，而且游戏里的血包掉落率比较高，只要行动谨慎基本可以保持满血。还有散落一地的箱子，在前面的关卡里都只会打出弹药、医疗包或者道具，让我对箱子有着不离不弃的爱情，结果在后面的关卡里我在打开一个箱子，直接爆出了一只Boss级别的怪物，我还没回过神来时主角就死掉了......
在其他的细节上，游戏的内容也很丰富，在房间里一般都有着一些爆炸性的辐射物，击中时即可在周围造成爆炸，合理利用可以安全打怪且节省大量子弹，有些爆炸物也可以直接炸开一块周围的墙壁从而发现隐藏的房间。不同主题的关卡也有对应的元素，比如荒漠中有仙人掌，实验室中有着各种机关和操作终端。关卡里偶尔也会有存储着神秘元素的水晶，击碎后随机生成致命的辐射或是治疗玩家的治愈孢子，我一开始运气好，遇到的都是生成治疗孢子的水晶，让我以为这个水晶纯粹是个治疗道具，结果到了后面关卡再遇到这个水晶时，恰好放出的是辐射，直接就让我挂掉了
探索过程有时也会掉落道具，一些能够快速对敌人造成大量伤害，一些能够辅助主角防守回血（或者逃命）等等，关键时刻（比如上面我说的开箱子开出强敌的时候）能够化险为夷。即使一些道具目前没多大用处也没关系，有着道具回收机可以分解它们变成弹药，实现了一个比较好的平衡。

一些实用的建议：
1.后期能不打箱子就尽量不打箱子，除非实在没子弹了，要是刷出只异形肯定是亏本的买卖；蜘蛛和异形都有特殊的攻击方式，当它就在你旁边时，移动一个回合它也还会攻击你一下，所以近身时不用想了，快点用火力把它干掉吧
2.如果在大房间里遇到异形，可以绕墙走一个大圆圈甩掉，不过基本没什么可能
3.有以物换物的旅行者在油桶旁边时，千万不要好奇心过重来射油桶把他炸死！！！否则你也会死得很惨（我就不剧透了）
4.一些传送门道具可以跳过前面正常一关关的过法，直接进入后面的关卡，道具血量子弹充足了就用了吧
5.血量在后期永远不够用，优先持有与血量有关的道具，输出道具也就有效那么一小会，后面大把怪物等着你呢
5.如果一些有特殊效果（比如防辐射、关电闸什么的）的的道具掉的比较多，那说明这个道具在后面应该可以发挥作用，虽然现在没什么用也还是留一个为好
6.说了这么多后期注意事项，究竟什么是后期？当你觉得走错一步就会死掉的时候，那就是后期了

I'm not so into randomly generated games, but I love this one very much.
Even if turn based it is dynamic. Even if permadeath there is not much loss feeling. Very nice balanced weapons and foes. Some neat upgrades, but still without the super power godly hero mode.
Even if most of time I die at 5th level, it ist constant fun and no rage.
It wasn't my style of game i thought it was more dungeon crawler than doing the same thing over and over just slightly differently
A fun roguelike game, I find it rather hard. The preview pictures gave me an impression of a rush game, but you got to play rather carefully and lure enemies in favorable positions. You can use props and environment to your advantage, and there is a reasonable number of item drops and upgrades to help you going.
The music is pretty bearable and not at all what you would expect with such graphics.
It is rather shallow but that is to be expected and though the graphics are meant this way, they could be a tad more advanced. Still I found this rather entertaining so far (5 hours), fresh and soothing in it's simplicity.
Great if you have little time, are tired, and want mindless fun.
Had been so intrigued by this little game after seeing it back in 2015 and it looked like an adictive little shooter\action\rpg\strategy game. i eventualy picked it up and must say im not disapointed. it plays exactly as i imagined and i love the graphics and art style.

Yeah, great game lots of fun, like to play the daily and get as far as possible, played the game for hours now and still I haven't seen or found everything.
Space Grunts is a fun little rogueLITE (I'll explain later on why I won't dub it as a roguelike) with charming and unique pixel art and fast turn-based gameplay. It's a fun and addictive time killer and you can find yourself saying "one more run" very often. It's learning curve is very low, meaning anyone can jump in and have a good time, not having to worry too much if the item they are about to use will just straight up kill them.

Space Grunts is fun and it does what it does pretty well, but I can't call it a roguelike. There's not enough nuance. There are no player levels and no character skills (outside of base stats per different character that can't be changed). This means that your gameplay is pretty much completely defined by the drops you get or don't get throughout a given run. Games like The Binding of Isaac do that same thing, but Isaac lets your own skill overcome adversity because of the real-time combat. Turn-based means you can plan your actions, but I don't think it's feasible to avoid damage entirely.
You characters have 3 (4 if you pick up a crowbar) weapons with limited ammo and different uses. You can also find various single-use tech (items) in your travels that heal you, create traps for your enemies, augment your firepower or give you a damage buffer (almost like temporary HP). The limited ammo and single-use items puts a lot of emphasis on strategy and luck, hoping that you get the right ammo or right weapon upgrades or right tech at the right time.
Unfortunately, this game isn't for me, as I felt gameplay felt relatively shallow. However, some of my complaints are the very reason it is so easy for people new to the genre to pick up and play it. I can see this very much being a soft introduction to the much more complex genre of REAL roguelike games (think stuff like Tales of Maj'Eyal, for example). It's obviously crafted with care and in the image of the creator, who seems to be very active on these forums. I love seeing that!
Space Grunts is like nothing out there in the world today. Sure it borrows concepts from numerous popular franchises and yes it's another roguelike but in actually, it isn't. Where other roguelike games on the market today delight in throwing insurmountable challenges at you in quick succession, inviting your demise to an ever closer outpost on your lifespan, Space Grunts challenges your mind by building unpredictable challenges as walls in your way. These walls can only be traversed through the application of logic and forward thinking.

You play one, out of a team, of Space Grunts, and your mission is simple: find your way into the moon-base, and figure out what has happened. You'll have to fight your way through aliens, robots, security drones and base-systems. Find the lower levels of the moon-base, and get to the core of the problems.
Consumables - A large collection of consumables can be found all over the moon base from weapon enhancers, to destructive toys, armor, explosives, system-hacks, and more. Use the items wisely to advance deeper into the moon-base.
Weapons - Starting with three standard Grunt weapons, you will be able to enhance them for more fire-power and range. On your way you'll also find alternate weapons, and melee weapons. - Highly Recommended!
Love the idea of this game since it reminds me of DoomRL, one of my favorite roguelikes. Could this be its better-looking cousin?
Unfortunately my initial impression wasn't very good:
- I find controls awkward. Initially I thought you could move with the arrow keys and shoot with the mouse, but you have to use either one or the other.
- When playing with keyboard you have to change your facing before moving in that direction. This has no gameplay purpose since turning on yourself is doesn't cout as a turn. This makes moving around artificially slow, I'd much prefer "twin-stick" style controls, think Binding of Isaac. It could work very well on a gamepad, on keyboard (two sets of directional keys, one to move one to shoot, or with the keyboard to move and the mouse to shoot,
- Using the mouse is error-prone because clicking an enemy will shoot at it (if you have line of sight) or run towards it and your doom if you don't. Basically if you're a fast player like me or misinterpret the visual cues you're in big trouble. Clicking an enemy you can't shoot should do nothing.
- Keyboard keys are rebindable - good - but the keyboard controls occasionally interprets me pressing the key once as two moves - very bad. WASD doesn't work by default and you can't use Enter to choose things in the main menu which gives the initial impression that keyboard doesn't fully work (two bindings for each commands would be nice).
- You can't wait a turn to wait for enemies to move (a staple of turn-based roguelikes), so you're occasionally forced to move into enemy line of fire, which I really hate.
- Initial 2-3 levels have very little challenge, I was getting seriously bored.
- So far level design is completely linear with only one path to traverse the whole level, which means that if an explosion leaves some permanent toxic stuff on the floor you can be forced to walk through it, no alternate path for you.
- Drop rate from crates is low but they occasionally give very good loot so you feel forced to burst them all. You spend a lot of ammo that way; there's a crowbar but it has limited uses and switching to the crowbar everytime to clean up a room is tedious. I think you should just be able to melee the crates for free.
- You have to use all consumables from the inventory screen, being able assign a few into quickslots with their own keys would've made the gameplay more fluid.
- Cheap deaths (in a permadeath game!): some enemies don't follow the same rules as you and can fire at you directly and through obstacles while you have to shoot in straight lines. Also, when you open doors enemies can sometimes get a first shot at you. In both cases if you're low on health you're doomed to die without being able to do anything about it, a big design sin for a roguelike.
- Explosions graphics are cool but they don't accurately convey the squares that were affected, and for explosive enemies you can't quite see if you were damaged by the explosion.
- Enemies seem to vary in health (your damage with weapons is constant) which makes the tactical game of positioning with the enemies unreliable, i.e. you can't plan out how much damage you'll receive by tackling a specific enemy. I think enemies should have fixed health (but you can have different colored ones for variations of the same enemy).
Still there are some things I liked:
- Thank gods, it avoided the balance-breaking mistake of having power/health upgrades that stick between runs
- Nice pixel art, very well animated with nice explosions
- Explosive barrels (muhahahaha!!!) and destructible walls
- Only three weapons (so far at least) but they each have their purpose, and you have to carefully choose which one to use, and conserve your ammo.
- You can select weapons with number keys.
- Getting weapon upgrades doesn't happen too often but is very satisfying because you can really feel the difference visually and in terms of damage. Other upgrades (inventory, skills) are even rarer but I think it's well-dosed.
- Secret rooms
- Some explosions don't expand in a single turn, so you can run away from them, pretty cool
- Some interesting inventory items, mostly consumables but some with permanent effect
- Traps can be used against enemies
Overall some good elements, but some very annoying flaws and some bad design points. I didn't find the overall gameplay as exciting as in DoomRL, in particular due to a lack of early challenge and controls I dislike. I'm on the edge on whether I should recommend it or not, but I'm going with negative since I won't be coming back to it. Let's see what can of improvements can be brought to the game during early access...
Yeah, its true, this is essentially a turn-based version of [i]Nuclear Throne[/i].[b] But wait, before you dismiss it, understand that it is [i]really[/i] well done, and definately has earned its place in competing with [i]NT[/i].[/b] While I [i]love Nuclear Throne[/i], this title may actually get more of my time because IMhumbleO anytime you add turn-based mechanics, things get better.

+Unlockables such as a bestiary and new playable characters that have different stats (not just skins).
+Daily runs.
+Learning curve is not as steep as many other roguelikes.
+No cheap deaths.

Super addicting and Fun, you can play it fast paced or slow and steady. One of those one more run type games and you can see your progress get better and better i love it !
Cant wait to play more and cant wait for it to hit IOS as well, it will have a permanent spot on my download list!
I'm a newcomer to rogue-likes/rogue-lites, introduced through The Binding of Isaac and Rogue Legacy. Both are really fun and I enjoy them immensely. However, they feature real-time combat. I prefer turn-based strategy. I'm also partial to sci-fi themed games. Space Grunts ticks all the right boxes: turn-based combat but still fast paced; well balanced; sci-fi theme; cool music, and last but not least, gorgeous colourful pixel art. For an early access game, it seems incredibly polished. Additionally, unlike many rogue-likes, the diffuculty curve is fairly gradual, there isn't a giant spike. Everything seems very balanced. This is my kind of game. If any of that sounds good to you, it might be your's as well.

I'm very fond of the feeling and style of all OrangePixel games, and follow the developer's doings since I discovered Heroes of Loot. Unfortunately for me, his recent games tend to become a tad too difficult for me old cheezer.
Space Grunts is a game changer. While it stays true to the OrangePixel look & feel, it empowers the player to dictate the pacing. You can play it as fast as a shooter. You can advance more carefully, "one step at a time", considering the options.
Now even I am able to compete for the daily challenges. I'm happily spending about twice the playtime as my competitors, but oh boy the feeling of topping the leaderboard for the first time! ;)
On the technical side, the early access version is exemplary. It's been very stable and well playable from the very first day.

I absolutely recommend this game to other players, I'm not even a big fan of rogue-likes, but after seeing the game-play trailer for this, I had to try it.
So I've played 74 frustratingly fun minutes!
I guess this is my early, early access review.
I love the difficulty level, the balance is spot on. The randomly generated levels work perfectly, it's nice to see different layouts each time I play and the area sizes feel just right. Not too big or small.
The turn based game-play adds even more value for me, I love being able to plan. It's so much better than just running around in a big mess of explosions and bullets like a lot of traditional rogue-likes.
The variety of weapon upgrades, items, power ups and enemies that I've encountered are interesting and the addition of data cards makes it all that more interesting. My personal favourite item so far is the mine, I enjoy pacing about at distance and letting the enemy come to me, only to walk straight into my mine!
The data cards seem to be rare, unless I've just been really unlucky. But this is the way it should stay I think, if they drop too often, it would feel like less of a reward when players find them.
The pixel art is nice and bold, the music works for the settings, creates some nice atmosphere, coupled with really nice weapon sound effects.
It's not very often that a rogue-like pulls me away from my work, which happens to be making games too. So from one developer to another, you've done an excellent job with the balance in Space Grunts.
I'm looking forward to playing more!

Space Grunts is a very interesting roguelite with beautiful art and a lot of potential. Some unusual directions have been taken with the gameplay, and while some aspects still seem roughed out, the quality of the art, sound, and interface design already feels like a finished game.
The decision to give the player a set of three upgradeable weapons is something rarely seen in a roguelike, and it plays out well in Space Grunts. While the progression for each weapon is fairly linear, having three weapon choices at all times does make the game feel more like an action game, as you quickly swap weapons between kills. I also appreciate the wide variety of items, but I never feel the need to use them early game, while in the late game I find myself running low.
I'm very impressed with the art for the game, the level design, weapon sounds, music and effects all reek of charm. The simple iconic images do a great job at making the game easier to read, which makes it faster to play, which makes it more like an action game. The explosions, flying shells and dirt, and screen shake add a satisfuying visceral quality. While it's already been mentioned, it bears repeating: the gun sound effects are very entertaining.
Despite the polish of the art, there are still some rough edges to the gameplay.Mainly there is not enough variety in completing the series of rooms that make up a level. The flame trap rooms are an interesting, and boss rooms are great, but the vast majority of rooms in the game involve tackling a few opponents that you are well equipped to defeat. Difficulty feels patchy at the moment, with early levels too easy, and later levels leading too often to a sudden, unexpected death. There are three classes to pick from, but their primary status feel unequal. Strength (HP) can be upgraded by Bionics items, and is generally unexciting, while Tech (Starting weapons) and Luck (Item Find) are both very important. If this was a completed game I would feel more uncomfortable about these elements, but given that the game is super fun while it is still incomplete, I'm fantasizing that it will be amazing when it's finished.
Space Grunts does still feel a bit incomplete, but given the quality of the existing work plus the frequent and meaty updates I believe we can expect great things.

After waiting and watching the progress on twitter I'm happy to finally have had a moment to sit down and enjoy this game. It's great! No troubles using my PS4 gamepad over bluetooth either!
The mechanics are straight forward and it's just the right kind of replayable for me. I was already a fan of the Orangepixel style and it's amazing how it came together so well in a turn-based game format. Still juicy, love the action, love the ability to plan out your attack on a room.
The balance of ammo and health drops feel pretty good to me so far (only played a little bit at the time of writing so who knows what the future holds); the levels and setting are just a nice change of pace over the typical high-fantasy of similar titles. I only bring that up to say that I appreciate variety, and not to suggest one setting is superior to another.
It doesn't appear that you're going to find the seriously in-depth story-telling and lore like you might find in games like Caves of Qud (or insert another previously released rogue-ish-turn-based-action-adventure game that you might love); for me this is perfect. They can't *all* be about huge tomes of lore and storytelling.
Sometimes you just want to get out there, rock that moon base, and tell your own story. Space Grunts delivers!

This is a great roguelite game which somehow feels like an action game. There's so much "juice" here (explosions, screenshake, flying gibs, light flashes) that I'm still thinking I'm playing a high-octane shooter and not a turn-based game.
You choose one of 3 characters and shoot aliens.
Yet there's much depth here: you have 3 different weapons which work better or worse depending on your situation. There's a lot of items which can help you overcome the obstacles or just to survive. Every enemy type acts differently and you have to adapt your tactics. There are some enviromental hazards which can be used to hurt enemies... or yourself.
Every session feels different, because all of these little design blocks produce interesting new situations.
Also, Space Grunts is pretty much complete, more than many other Steam titles which aren't even in Early Access.

Forgettable name aside, Space Grunts is actually a pretty interesting game. It plays like a hybrid of a turn based roguelike/roguelite with the pace of an arcade game. The gameplay itself is pretty simple. When you move or shoot, enemies can do the same. There's no skip turn button, so you need to think a bit about how you're going to position your marine to deal with enemies. The gameplay loop is that you spawn into a level and you move room to room clearing out baddies. You start with three weapons: A shotgun, a railgun, and a frag grenade. As you progress through the levels, you'll find more items that mix things up. It's simple and fun. If you're a fan of roguelikes/roguelites, give this a try. For $10, it's a good deal.
Pros:
- Easy to pick up.
- Polished for an Early Access title.
- Decent aesthetic and sounds.
- Fast paced and fun gameplay.
Cons:
- Visually simple.
- Not as deep or complex as the genres it draws from.

I just like rogue-likes (or -lites, or likelikes or whatever floats your boat), and this one is plain fun to play.
Visually it reminds me of Nuclear Throne, only with turn-based movement and combat.
You can move and shoot in the 4 cardinal directions, aiming costs nothing but as soon as you take a step everything else does as well. Deliberately without a skip turn function, it changes smoothly between just going for it and taking another second to ponder about what to do next.
Ammunition for your 3 weapons has to be found (only very late into the game I actually ran out of ammo for 1 of my guns for a while), and encourages you to swap between them to get the most out of it.
The late game can get quite tense, but you can take your time to think about your next move.
- 3 weapons which upgrade over the course of the game (short range gun, AoE grenade launcher, long range and piercing plasma rifle)
- 3 characters with different starting stats
- procedural level generation with secret rooms and randomly spawned entrances to special levels
- good amount of loot, most pickups have limited durations (like x turns of invisibility - these have to be consumed in your 10-slot inventory, so you can decide when to use them)
- 1 life per run, no carry-over progression besides some sort of enemy codex (using found data cards on terminals)
- nice, consistent pixel art
- sound works... could be a bit meatier but doesn't get in the way
- controls work fine, keyboard only, mouse only or controller just do their things, use whatever you prefer.
- NO crashes
For me it hits the sweet spot in between hectic shooters like nuclear throne or dungeon souls and micro-management heavy turn based games that drag on forever. A successful run takes me about 90 minutes which feels just right.
From what I can see, the (core of the) game is finished and a lot of fun to play, the developer is relaxed and responsive; no reason to believe that this one will be one of those broken early access turds that gets abandoned once it's cashed in.
Thumbs up.
